The evolution of Grandma Addams (2)

When the television series adapted the character of the Grandma, they actually did not keep the idea of her being called “Grandma Frump”. They had coined the “Addams Family” term, and decided that the Grandma would be “Grandma Addams”. They actually considered calling her “Granny”, but then realized it might confuse her with the character of “Granny” from another popular sitcom, “The Beverly Hillbillies”. So they rather settled on “Grandmama”.

Grandmama Addams is played by Blossom Rock. The television series kept most of her design and general characterization from Chas Addams’ drawing. We still have the shawls and the mane of untamed white hair ; she still has a great love of cooking (be it toadstool soufflé, porcupine toffee or yack stew - she kills the yacks herself!)... She also keeps other grandmotherly activities: for example she likes to mend or create clothes, but through sewing or the use of an old-fashioned spinster wheel (unlike Morticia’s knitting). She is still Gomez’s mother, and thus Morticia’s mother-in-law, and she is still a “witchy” woman...

Though on the topic, the television series insists also on her “witchy” nature. She the keeper of various old-fashioned borderline superstitious traditions (her “love dust” she throws at people), and has all sorts of old-fashioned remedies to offer (though they tend to be quite harsh - ranging from sticking pins into people from breaking a vase over their head). And more importantly, she becomes here a fortune-teller. She has a crystal ball in which she sometimes look to try to guess the future or find the truth about people ; and she even got arrested once for trying to make these predictions into a business.

A difference with Chas Addams original drawings, however, is that this Grandmama is not at all the passive old woman stuck in a perpetual half-asleep smile. Far from it: Grandmama Addams is a very active and energetic old woman. She frequently wrestles with alligators for fun (be it in the basement, in the moat or in the quicksands) ; she enjoys being put on a rack ; and whenever there is trouble or someone needs to get rid off, she always has her trusty beheading axe by her side - she can even be seen sharpening it in the living room! In fact, Grandmama is usually quite prompt at disliking people or situations, she can become quite a grumpy old woman - though she also is quite childish, and loves being at the center of the attention. But despite all that, she is still someone you can count on: if you are in prison, she’ll send you a hacksaw in a cake for sure.

Interestingly, the sitcom decided to make her a sort of duo with the other elder of the family, Uncle Fester. They are often both seen together. Sometimes they bicker with each other or torture each other, but they also often side together, usually against Morticia and Gomez’s decisions: once they both shared an intense distrust of their new neighbors despite Gomez and Morticia’s desire to make them feel welcome ; while in another episode they both objected intensely to the way they raised their kids, feeling that they “spoiled” them. Fester and Grandmama are also often seen playing together at the Addams equivalent of darts: throwing knives. Grandmama is a true talent with a blade in her hand.

We know that Grandmama Addams is well over her sixties: she first voted in the United-States in 1906. And yes, female vote wasn’t possible back then, but as Grandmama says, it didn’t stop her. She is one determined and stubborn woman.
