Sweet Grass!!! My botw/ totk oc :D
She’s a Bokoblin ‘chicken’ farmer who lives in Keelay Plain, West Necluda. She’s a proud mother of three who spends most of her time caring for her livestock, harvesting their eggs, and distributing them to the other Bokoblins in her settlement. Sweet Grass’s actual name sounds quite different, but the meaning is Sweet Grass, so that’s what I’m going with.
Bokoblin headcannons below the cut!
In my personal little headcannon I believe that the Bokoblins existed before Ganon took over Hyrule a hundred years ago, and they had a pretty tumultuous relationship with Hylians in particular. When Ganon’s corrupting influence swept across the land the Bokoblins and other ‘monsters’ were influenced by his evil, losing their senses whenever they saw the other intelligent races of Hyrule. In the time between the end of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom I believe Bokoblins were returned to their right minds, able to chose against violence. However, any chance for peace of communication was shattered when Ganon’s power rose again.

One feature of Tears of the Kingdom that I really love is the Boss Bokoblin enemy. Sometimes, I’m wandering and in the distance, I see a Boss Bokoblin leading his little bokos around and I just like to watch them because it’s like I’ve encountered a mother duck and her ducklings, but they’re giant pig-faced monsters who want to kill me.

Something I don't understand.
So, bokos were in Skyward Sword, right? Timeline-wise, they don't appear again until after OOT, and not in any Defeated Hero games (assuming BOTW isn't in the Defeated Hero timeline).
Where on earth did they go for all of those centuries?
My theory is that bokoblins are resurrected whenever moblins and other larger monsters just aren't enough.
Okay, look- the bigger the monster, the more room it needs to live, right? It needs a larger territory to hunt for food. Moblins are quite large, and purely carnivores. Lizals/dinolfos are also carnivorous, as well as amphibious, and they don't sleep. So even though lizals are smaller than moblins, they still eat a lot. Octoroks are small and can live anywhere and probably eat anything, but they need a lot of room to move around. Keese are small, but too easily defeated. Lynels are quite big and powerful- I imagine they eat anything that moves, and they don't appear to sleep. And while Hinoxes sleep all the time unless disturbed, I would imagine they have to eat a literal ton to stay alive.
Ganon's an evil pig, and I don't imagine he gives a flip for the well-being of any of his minions. But he's not stupid. If you put too many carnivores, especially big ones or ones that never sleep, into an area, they'll wipe out all the wildlife, and then eventually the predators will starve to death.
Bokos are the obvious solution, especially for something long-term, like the century that Calamity Ganon spent with Zelda holding him at bay. They're small, they sleep at night, and they're omnivorous, so they can survive on fruits as well as meat.
In older games, we had Gohma larvae and whatever you call those flying pineapples from Hyrule Field in OOT. But for whatever reason, it seems that Ganon decided that bokos would be more efficient to deal with the Hero of the Wild, probably because bokos don't seem to mind living and working with other monsters, especially moblins and lizals.

It occurs to me that Boss Bokoblins are basically just oldschool Moblins.
Well, a giant pig monster by any other name will smell as rank, I guess.

AU where the bokoblins still can't swim, but if they're nearby a river or lake, they sometimes go to the shore and blow bubbles underwater when no one's looking
