This laminated post card offers a glimpse across the river. A little more than a decade after the war, the eastern bank is already fully renovated. The hillsides are lush with gardens and residences, someone's parked a small beige airship by the fountain. This postcard will sell for a pretty penny.
Grand Couron '37
This postcard depicts an ill-advised residential area overlooking the Jamrock Quarter. 13-story buildings line the hillside like sarcophagi, an ominous fog already rising from behind. These are the last boom years -- in '39 the project fails catastrophically, leaving behind an opiate and hepatitis B infested slum.
Martinaise '98
A faded picture postcard from the end of the last century shows Martinaise as was before the Revolution. It's the height of summer, Rue de Saint-Ghislaine is teeming with parasol-wielding bourgeoisie and Wild Pines flags buttress the walkway. Nothing is written on the back.
Couron '33
This one has 'HELL' written on its back. It could not be further from the truth. It's the boom years, and Couron, the nicest district in Revachol West, is enjoying a sun drenched day. Tall and handsome buildings rise from the riverside: steel, iron and yellow limestone, with cloud shadows sliding on the facades.
Boogie Street '46
This crumpled up postcard depicts an open air market in Boogie Street ~5 years ago. A vendor smiles as dead roosters line his stalls -- hung by their feet from canopy. Red blood flows onto the muddy street, blurry shadows of people pass

Song Review(s): Phil Lesh Quintet - “Night of a Thousand Stars,” “New Speedway Boogie,” “Dear Mr. Fantasy” and “Shakedown Street” (Live, March 6, 2024)
A bunch of “Wheel” teases - that’s who the Phil Lesh Quintet are.
Taking the stage March 6 in New York, the band sung an a cappella section of the Grateful Dead number before rolling into “Night of a Thousand Stars” an original from its 2002 album, There and Back Again. A bit rushed, it was nevertheless a fine performance and a real treat to hear this long-neglected gem from Lesh’s small stable of self-penned material.
The same preference for sprightly tempos marked the version of “New Speedway Boogie” that followed on the band’s generous livestream sampler from the gig. Keyboardist Rob Barraco sung this one and the mid-song jam found the musicians slowly tearing the music apart, eventually devolving to the threads of formless, but not uninteresting, improvisation, before they pieced it back together for the final verse and a cappella conclusion.
A prime example of how post-Grateful, Dead music should be explored.

Warren Haynes was back on the mic for “Dear Mr. Fantasy,” another quickly paced number that found the singer engaging with fellow axeman Jimmy Herring in a thrilling inter-verse duel that continued until bassist Lesh and drummer John Molo nudged the Traffic song toward Jamaica and a reggae jam that eventually led to more vocals and the outro.
Haynes kept on singing when an atypically slow “Shakedown Street” emerged from the post-“Fantasy” silence. The song’s essential backgrounds were rough and the livestream faded before the track ended. Seemingly no great loss, given this “Shakedown” didn’t seem destined to seriously poke around, though Sound Bites’ll never know for sure.
No matter. In the nearly 55 minutes of music that the band gave away, it reinforced why its now-periodic reunions are so highly anticipated and why - when it was a going concern during the aughts - the PLQ was such a beloved institution.
Grade card: Phil Lesh Quintet - “Night of a Thousand Stars,” “New Speedway Boogie,” “Dear Mr. Fantasy” and “Shakedown Street” (Live - 3/6/24) - B/B+/A-/I
Courtyards = the abandoned housing and the fishing village?
Le Domaine Eminent
in North Jamrock, past the motorway
Main and Perdition appears to be the rough address for the Precinct
HEADING "HOME"
Past the 41st [heading east/west]
through the market
Boogie Street Spearhead
I think this means the north end since it stretches all the way to Faubourg in the south
Around meteor lake
turn on Voyager road past the video rental
PROBLEM
Let’s rewind. Let’s trace your drunken steps back home. Jump across the raised channel bridge south-west of here. Fall over. Get up. Get off the asphalt in 20 minutes, shuffle your feet through courtyards, scaring little children. Go under the great raised motor-tract, the 8/81, until you reach le domaine éminent in North Jamrock. The streets are frozen this time of year, caked with ice. Walk down Main, to Perdition -- there’s a side alley there and your footprints in the mud...
SOLUTION
...here we go. Home awaits. Walk past Station 41 and through the market. Past the Boogie Street spearhead to the other side of the lake -- the frozen eye at the center of the district. Then past the video rental store on the corner. There, at the end of a street lined with pine trees: a small house, no larger than a matchbox. 11 Voyager Road. You no longer live there. Those times are gone, and so are those people. Why did you come here? Why are you still here? And where’s the dealer? You have to get back to work. That’s all you have now.
Freestyle is a terrific reissue label, and like me, they know 1983 was a stellar year for popular music. Here are some of the more recent reissues put out by Freestyle originally released in 1983, I think they're all UK acts, they certainly illustrate the unique mix of talent we're luck to have here. Another great thing about Freestyle is they include notes, check out the bandcamp https://freestylerecords.bandcamp.com or the descriptions on the YouTube videos
