Another year, another war, another bastion of humanity holding the world together by pride and stubbornness alone. 

Or, well, maybe not alone, given his presence among them, watching mortals flit about their work and patrols as the sun dipped over the range. It’d only been a few days since he’d arrived, name breathed in doubt and incense- honestly one of the least eventful Callings he’d ever been pulled by. Something about tipping the war further to win the favor of a loved one- whatever it was, he was there, and he was stuck until they perished or persevered. 

So far none of the mortals had enough sight to pay him any mind. Some of the sorcerers quirked a brow at his footfalls, but they all saw right through him

“You’re a funky little mage, aren’t you?” He called once he noticed her staring. “Come on then- what are you going to do? Stranger in camp. Armed, but no one’s screamed yet, eh? Funny, isn’t it?”

scars and burns: It’s never mentioned in the fic, but she does have a bullet wound scar from Elysium. What does get featured in the fic is the terrible injury she suffers at Noveria.  She’s very lucky to be alive (thank you Dr. Chakwas, for being indomitable).

Summary: Penny Parker is sick, and when she is sick, she needs cuddles

Notes:  I have fallen in LOVE with Penny Parker, especially her as Peter’s twin. I always wanted a twin, so I definitely live vicariously through fanfics. Drop some Peter&Penny twin recs for me. I will love you forever if you do!

It was a bad day.

It had technically been a bad week, but Penny had been trying so hard to ignore it. It was her last group of exams before finals next month, and she couldn’t afford to get sick. She had an exam in Calculus, AP US History, and AP Lit, plus a huge project due in Chemistry, and two essays.

Her teachers were trying to kill her, obviously, and the worst part? It was working. Penny woke up that morning feeling like she was dying. 

At least I got through this week from hell. Only one day left. She thought, and rolled out of bed, nearly crying as her feet hit the cold floor. Literally everything hurt, and she just wanted to get back in bed with her aunt to be snuggled and coddled by her until she fell asleep.

Penny was especially clingy when she was sick. Even without the spider powers, her ability to stick to anybody who was willing to cuddle could rival Peter’s. They’d definitely overwhelmed their aunt one winter after both getting sick. May hadn’t been able to leave the apartment for three days.

But, alas, the snuggling would have to wait. May had to work early that morning and would be back late, and Penny had one last test to take. Stupid AP Lit.

Penny forced her aching arms into her comfiest, warmest shirt, and headed to the kitchen to force some breakfast down her burning throat. Peter looked up from his bowl of cereal and concern immediately washed over his face.

“You’re wearing your ‘sick shirt,’” he said, and Penny looked down at the oversized, light pink shirt she was wearing. “You always wear that one when you’re not feeling good,” Peter explained. He abandoned his Lucky Charms to feel Penny’s forehead. “You’re definitely a little warm, Pen. You should stay home.”

Penny was shaking her head before he finished. “No. I’m fine. I have one last exam in AP Lit, and you know Mr. Gardner doesn’t do make ups.” Peter made a face. He did know. They both despised the man’s rigidity and often talked about it at length. “It’s Friday, anyway. I’ll take a nap after school.”

He looked at her skeptically before sighing. “Okay. But we’re coming right back home and watching a movie. No homework, no Spider-Man. Just cuddles and tv.”

“That sounds perfect.” It took all of Penny’s self control not to whimper. She wanted to ask him to snuggle with her right then, forget school. But she took a breath, forced back the tears threatening to fall (she was also very emotional when she was sick), and went to grab the instant oatmeal. 

After breakfast, the twins made their way to school. Peter chatted the whole way, obviously trying to distract his miserable sister, and silently cheered when he was able to earn a few small smiles. 

The promise of cuddles and an evening being taken care of by her brother carried Penny through the day. She nearly lost control of the dam holding her tears when Flash, who always extended his taunting to both Parkers, made some stupid comment. 

But MJ came back with a snappy response and took Penny’s hand. Penny shot her a grateful smile, so glad that her brother’s girlfriend liked her so well, and was able to make it through the day. She was even fairly confident about the test, though she honestly didn’t care all that much about what she got on it at this point. She was just happy to be done.

Finally, finally the last bell rang, and Penny had to restrain herself from cheering. She and Peter walked home, and as soon as they opened the door, Penny was in her room, changing into her comfiest pajamas. Trailing a blanket behind her, she made her way to the couch, where Peter was already set up, his arm extended out for her to snuggle under.

The relief was instantaneous. She burrowed into his side, shivering in delight. Peter chuckled.

“What movie would you like, honorary spider?”

Penny giggled. The last time Peter and Penny had hung out with Black Widow, Nat had insisted they be the spider trio. When Penny had pointed out that she had no Spider qualities, the other two had brushed it off, saying she was an honorary spider. Very prestigious, indeed.

“Uh, I think I’m in the mood for Episode IV. I need a comfort movie.”

Peter pulled up A New Hope, and ran his hand through his sister’s hair, gently raking out each curl. Soon, Penny’s head was feeling exceptionally heavy, and she laid it down onto Peter’s shoulder. Her breathing evened out, and then she was blissfully asleep.

When Penny woke up, the first thing she was conscious of was the darkness. She’d obviously been asleep for a number of hours. The second thing was pain. Her head, her throat, her eyes. Everything was on fire. The last thing she realized was that she was alone.

“Peter,” she croaked out, her throat chafing. She tried again, putting some more volume into the word. “Peter!”

She was about to panic, but then she saw the note. 

Penny,

You were completely out, and I got a S-M emergency alert. I’ll be back in just a few hours. If you wake up before I get home, I’m sorry. I’ll get back as soon as I can. There’s some Motrin and water on the table for you.

Suddenly, Penny was crying. She couldn’t help it. She was sick, she was hurting, and she was alone. She didn’t blame Peter for leaving, but she just wanted him back. Needed him back. The tears wouldn’t stop, which just made her headache worse, which just made her cry more. It was a ridiculous, vicious cycle. 

Her fevered, mushy brain tried to grasp hold of someone, anyone, who might be able to fulfill the need to be snuggled, cause her blanket and pillow weren’t cutting it. She grabbed her phone and clicked on the first number that came to mind. It rang twice before-

“Hey, sweetheart! How’re you doing?” Tony's voice rang out from the other end of the phone. Penny opened her mouth, but only a sob came out. “Penny. What’s wrong?” He asked sharply, and she heard him suiting up already.

“Don’t feel good,” she managed to get out, her chest continuing to heave. “P-Peter’s on patrol and May’s w-working.”

“Oh, piccina,” he said, sympathy replacing the panic in his voice. “You at home?”

“Yeah. It’s d-dark.”

“I’m on my way. I’ll stay on the line.”

Tony’s voice held the dark at bay until he was knocking on the door. Penny forced herself up to let him in, and Tony was out of his suit and hugging her to his chest as soon as the door was open. He scooped her up, brought her back to the couch, and held her as her sobs and shivers slowly subsided.

“Sorry. I just, I fell asleep snuggling with Peter and when I woke up he was, he was gone.”

“And let me guess. You’re just as clingy as he is when you’re sick?” Tony asked, chuckling slightly. Penny nodded, then smiled as he wrapped the blanket around her and pulled her into his side. “Well, I’m not going anywhere. I’m glad you called me, sweetheart.”

“Thanks,” Penny whispered, her body aching but the need for comfort and contact had finally subsided, making it manageable. 

After a little while, Tony started to move, making Penny whine.

“You need food, piccina. I’m just going to go get you some toast and cocoa.” Penny pouted, but let go of the arm she’d held hostage to keep him there. 

Tony returned shortly with the promised food and some medicine, and Penny gratefully took it all. Once her belly was slightly filled and the medicine took the edge off the ache in her body, she started dozing off again, snuggled tight into Tony’s side.

Penny was just starting to dream about swinging through New York when a noise jolted her awake and made both her and Tony jump three feet into the air.

“Peter,” she gasped, a hand tight to her chest.

“You nearly gave us a heart attack, kid,” Tony complained.

“Sorry,” Peter said, but his grin negated the apology and Penny rolled her eyes at him. “What are you doing here, Mr. Stark?” 

“Well, Ms. Spider here woke up and you were gone, and apparently she’s just as sticky as you are when she’s sick. So I came to fill in.” 

Peter tapped the spider emblem and his suit fell away. He threw it over a chair, and then squished himself onto the couch on the other side of Tony.

“I gotta get in on the cuddle action!” 

“Geez, you two are a pair,” Tony griped playfully, and then yelped as Peter dug an elbow into his side in retaliation. “Watch it, underoos.”

“Oh, you love me,” Peter giggled, and Tony simply wrapped his arms around his kids in response, pulling them closer.

Eventually, they decided to order soup and watch Episode V, and soon Tony was trapped between two sleeping, snoring spider babies. (He’ll never admit that he took about 27 photos and texted both Pepper and Rhodey to gush about their cuteness.)

May came home just as the movie was ending, and he looked up, hopeful that she would help him get out of his predicament. As much as he loved being snuggled up with the Parker twins (gosh, he really was going soft) he couldn’t feel his arm and really needed to stretch his leg. But May took one look, snapped a picture, and laughed.

“Nope. Sorry. You won’t be leaving for another two days. Get comfortable,” she said, heading into the kitchen.

“That’s not funny, May,” he called. “MAY!”

All he got in response was a laugh.

"White-red-white flag": who fought under it in the Great Patriotic war The modern Belarusian opposition actively uses the white-red-white flag, or, as they themselves call it,"Bela-chyrvona-Bely scyag". It turns out that during the great Patriotic war, this symbol did not earn a good reputation at all. "Independent" flag according to Leonid Spatkai, author of the publication "coats of Arms and flags of the world", the white-red-white flag was legally fixed by the decree of the Secretariat of the Belarusian people's Republic of August 5, 1918, that is, during the German occupation after the First world war. In the first half of the 1920s, after the Red army cleared Belarus of the invaders, the flag remained white-red-white for some time, but the Central stripe got a wide border of dark color. According to one version, the border was black as a sign of mourning in connection with the coming to power of the Bolsheviks. However, the mentioned flag was not banned by the Bolsheviks because of the mourning border. It was actively used during the anti-Bolshevik Slutsk uprising, the main goal of which was declared to protect the independence of Belarus. In addition, as indicated in the collection of articles by V. A. In the 1920s-1930s, the white-red-white flag was used by Belarusian military formations as part of the armies of Poland and Lithuania. Therefore, it is not surprising that the Bolsheviks did not like this symbol. However, the history of the "banner" during the Civil war pales before the events that took place under it during the great Patriotic war. Then the desire of certain layers of Belarusians to get independence played a cruel joke on them. As Alexander Sever writes in his book "Lavrenty Beria. The BKO mobilized the entire male population of military age, as well as officers up to 55-57 years old. Not everyone joined the BKO on a voluntary basis. According to the North, the Germans organized a real capture of future fighters. Family members of evaders who acted as hostages were sent to camps. However, there were also those who were willing to cooperate with the Nazis. According to Alexander Nosovich, author of the publication "Why Belarus is not the Baltic States", these were Belarusian nationalists — supporters of the so-called"litvinism". During the war, many leaders of the nationalist movement who had been in exile returned to Belarus. They tried to use the current situation to revive the ideas of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Kryvia, the nobility and litvinism on the territory of the Reichskommissariat Ostland. With the permission of the Nazi leadership, the Pogonya newspaper was published, filled with anti-Soviet and anti-Semitic propaganda, and the white-red-white flag was adopted. As Alexander Nosovich notes, the torture and execution of partisans, the murder of Jews, the burning of villages and other atrocities were committed under the white-red-white flag, which is now used by the opposition. It is worth noting that a special Commission even approved a draft uniform for Belarusian formations, but, according to the author of the book "Belarusian collaborators", Oleg Romanko, it remained on paper. However, collaborators of Belarus still can be distinguished from others wearing the same German form of "Eastern" parts: white-red-white flag and emblem "Pahonia" and "Arlovski" the cross was used in different modifications as badges, arm shields, stripes and buttonholes. Members of another unit, the “Belarusian self — defense corps”, created to fight the partisan movement, which was supervised by the occupation police of the BNS (Belarusian people's self-help), also performed under this flag. This organization was headed by Ivan yermachenko, who, according to Vseslav Zinkevich, author of the publication "non-Venerable history of White Russia", was an active figure of the BNR and had a long experience as a Hitler servant: he had been working with the Germans since the 1930s. It is noteworthy that Zinkevich's book contains a photo of Belarusian children depicting the Nazi salute against the background of the white-red-white flag.

At the end of most years I can usually pick at least one game that I truly enjoy and would recommend to anyone, but this year, for various reasons, no such game really appeared. I can think of no game I could really put on a pedestal and praise unconditionally.

If I look at the games I put the most time into that came out this year, I’m left cold. The Outer Worlds ended up being lukewarm at best despite having all circumstances in its favour, I didn’t even see one of Fire Emblem Three Houses’ endings, Pokémon Sword and Shield was passable but continued a depressing trend of non-improvement for the franchise, I haven’t touched Borderlands 3 since finishing the story, the Crash Team Racing remake came out and was great but was marred by micro-transactions so effectively that even I can’t bring myself to push it, and Luigi’s Mansion 3, while certainly good, did not feel like 60 dollars’ worth of game.

If I have to praise anything, it’s the amazing continued support that Monster Hunter World and Final Fantasy XIV have gotten in 2019, including an incredible expansion for each and some of the best quality of life enhancements I’ve seen, but it’s a bit weird for post-launch patches and expansions to be the thing you most enjoy in a whole year.

Then again, maybe a game I would have loved simply flew under the radar for me. The “official” pick for best game of the year seems to be Sekiro, but I’ve been burned out on Soulsborne games since I finished Dark Souls 3. I wasn’t interested. Then there’s Resident Evil 2, which, I don’t play horror games. Death Stranding looked too divisive for me to dare spend my hard-won money on it. I don’t know anything about Devil May Cry but there’s always a chance I might have liked 5... or V.

I dunno. Games. Maybe 2020 will blow my socks off.

███ Short Introduction

Akahiko Yureimoto is a young mercenary currently in the service of the Police Force. He doesn't seem particularly thrilled about his employers.

███ History

Akahiko was born the only child of poor parents. However, he had no idea that they were poor when he was little, as his parents amassed lots of debt trying to live beyond their means. His father, afraid of some of the people he owed money to, faked his death when Akahiko was 7 and fled the country. This sent his mother spiraling into a depression, and she was often emotionally vacant during Akahiko's childhood and teenage years. Because of his unfortunate parental circumstances, Akahiko learned how to fend for himself at a young age, though the legality of some of his actions is questionable.

At age 12, while on his way home with leftovers from a particularly high quality restaurant, Akahiko was mugged by a local gang. The gang took everything that Akahiko had on him, including his food and clothes. When he tried to fight back, he was held down and the gang's leader slashed his face with a knife, leaving two large wounds stretching from the corners of his mouth and across his cheeks. Humiliated, mostly naked, and injured, Akahiko stayed in an alleyway overnight, too dazed to go back home. He was eventually found by a kind old woman, who helped him recover without asking questions. However, she wanted to report the incident to the police, which Akahiko didn't want, so he ran away, leaving a note thanking the old woman for her generousness.

For the next few years, Akahiko laid low and worked to grow stronger. Eventually, money became particularly tight. At 15, and under the alias "Roku", he began to sell his services to whomever would pay, be it criminals or minor Pro Heroes. At first, he acted as mere extra muscle for small periods of time, but as his notoriety grew, his clientele expanded, and by 18 his contracts would last for a few weeks or longer. His willingness to work for either side of the law was often met with uncertainty or displeasure, and so he developed a strict loyalty code, promising employers that he would not turn on them while a contract was in effect, or else he would forfeit the money earned.

At 19, Akahiko was apprehended by the Police Force and held in custody. Honoring his contract, he refused to say who his employer was while being interrogated. He remained in custody, and tried to figure out how to escape. Unable to think of anything else, he begged to be released under any conditions the police set. After much deliberation, and with much persuasion, he was released under police supervision. Akahiko found the supervision annoying, as he still needed contract money, and so formulated a plan. He approached the police with a bold proposition; since he had numerous underground contacts, he could act as a double agent, reporting any findings back to the police--for a fee, of course. To his surprise, his offer was accepted, though it didn't get rid of his "policeman babysitter" situation.

At some point more recently, with police permission, he joined the League of Villains as a double agent.

◣ A p p e a r a n c e ◥

███ Appearance

Akahiko is tall with a slender build and moderately muscular chest and arms. He has dark auburn hair, blue eyes, and pale skin. He has one piercing on his left ear. He has large scars on his cheeks due to his childhood attackers. Akahiko maintains an surprisingly classy casual style, which consists of short sleeved shirts, leather or dark denim jackets, tight pants, and boots, often with heels. He also often wears scarves or neckerchiefs, alongside face masks which hide his scars. Akahiko's mercenary costume is a light grey sleeveless hoodie, matching basketball shorts, grey socks, kimono sandals, and a tan face mask, along with whatever earring he happens to be wearing that day. This costume does not change in the winter, often to his detriment.

███ Personality

Akahiko maintains a rough and often aloof exterior. He doesn't seem particularly invested in any current events, and as a general rule doesn't get emotionally attached to employers or invested in anything he's hired to do. He doesn't show much emotion around people he doesn't trust. He's trained himself to keep an extremely level head to avoid being taken advantage of. Akahiko is of a pragmatic and tactical mind, carefully planning how to go about anything he sets his mind to. However, he isn't the best at thinking on the spot, and often needs a little time to regroup if what he's doing gets derailed. He's also particularly manipulative, putting on a charming nature to get his way. He's gotten very good at flattery. Although he is currently employed by the police, he despises law enforcement organizations, blaming them for his difficult childhood. Though he is willing to work with them in exchange for payment, he does not trust them whatsoever. Oddly enough, he does not harbor quite the same feelings for Pro Heroes, though he doesn't like how they seem to capitalize on people's suffering. Despite his apparent emotional distance, Akahiko is surprisingly caring and kind, as evidenced by his continued efforts to support his mother. He also helps to support young children who are involved in the underground, giving them money or food when he can. This unexpected side of him was brought on by kindness showed to him when he was young, and a desire to pay it forward, as well as the morals his mother taught him when he was little. Though Akahiko has many crimes to his name, he considers himself honorable, if not entirely moral. Shantae: 1/2 Genie Hero

From the 16th of this month, March 2020, to the 15th of next month, April 2020, Games with Gold has the excellent platformer – Shantae: ½ Genie Hero. As long as you have an active Xbox Live or Xbox Gamepass Ultimate subscription

It's “FREE” to download during that period but even after April 15th, you can keep playing it, it won't leave your library and if you let your subscription expire it will still remain, you just can't play it.

I have had Gamepass for about a year now, I wanted to kind of document my journey and time with games on Gamepass and one of the first that I played when I got the service last year was Shantae: ½ Genie Hero.  Unfortunately, this game is no longer available on the service and I thought back in September of 2019 that I had lost my chance to talk about it in a relevant sense, but lo and behold its back now – kind of, in a zombie-esque way.

The game expiring from Gamepass was actually the launching point for me to a Switch.  It was my birthday in September and Shantae was just about to be removed from the service, great present Microsoft.  I was kind of depressed that in this moment in my life that I had spent about a quarter of a year playing the game that was just going to up and leave.  Now I could have bought it and at a discount but if I did that I would be getting just the base game that I was practically done with.  I also had all this extra money from my birthday burning a hole in my pocket and instead doing something smart like putting towards my mortgage – I ended up buying a Switch to cheer me up.  And what does the Switch have but the physical version of Shantae: ½ Genie Hero that includes all the DLC.  

THAT – and the fact that one of my favorite games of all time was just remade – Link's Awakening. 

So I got those two games to cope with the fact that I wouldn't be able to play Shantae on Gamepass anymore in a few days ...but I had also gotten my wife a Switch Lite for our anniversary so I kind of wanted a reason to give it to them early and we had a Switcheversay on September 28th.

On a side note of this tangent – I feel like I'm always a little behind with Nintendo, with my earliest exposure to Nintendo being no different.  Way back in the dark ages of the early 1990s I was a Genesis Lad.  After school I was in a program where I first got to play a Nintendo game, there were NES consoles, games and Ataris as well.  While kids at school were telling me, “YA GOTTA PLAY Donkey Kong Country 2 and Mega Man X!” The cutting edge stuff of the time, I would root around and find other games like Donkey Kong Jr. and Mega Man 2 on NES.  Now don't get me wrong, those were great games I loved then and still love now but I was behind the times. I just didn't have a Super Nintendo, like most of my peers that I went to school with.  I just had the Sega. So when most were playing Super Mario World, Chrono Trigger and A Link to Past – I was playing Sonic... Sonic (Sonic 2)... and Sonic... (Sonic 3 but not & knuckles)

BUT Sonic is great!

When my friends had a Gameboy Advance, I still had a Gameboy Color.  When the DS was the hot handheld, I got a Gameboy Advance, I got a 3DS around the time Fire Emblem Fates came out when it seemed like everyone was clamoring for a new portable technology and I got a Wii U when it was all but dead.  As previous stated, I only got a Switch last September.  Heck, I haven't even played the new Mary-o yet

Pushing forwarding in the way back machine to the time when I was a still a young teen, at the age of 14, I remember a Gameboy Color game came out that I really wanted to get – Shantae.  I don't even know why I really wanted it other than it was a new Gameboy Color game when new Gameboy Color games weren't coming out.  Like, I remember the Gameboy Advance came out about a year ago but  I didn't need one according to my parents-

Me: Mom, can I get a Gameboy Advanced? Mom: You have Gameboy Advance at Home ::At home::

So the impact of a new Gameboy Color game coming out - blew … me … away.  

Of course - I didn't get that game either.

Now don't get me wrong, I still got games as a kid on birthdays and Christmas but I feel like the games I didn't get are the ones I look back at and think – If only...

Tangents aside – why do I think I like this game?

Why is it when I played Half Genie Hero in June of 2019 did I really got hooked on it well until the end of summer? I play, play, played it – all the modes, collect the endings, the tedious achievements like Queen of the Seven Cheese where you have to beat Risky Boots by just chomping at her as a mouse doing 1 damage at at a time.... ugh!  For achievements I even … gasp (teeth noise) … speed ran it.  And successfully, not on my first attempt though!  Or … at least successfully enough to get the endings and achievements.  I've never speed ran a game before, at least on purpose.  I drew bad fan art!

For the first time in my life I even looked into Fan Fiction.  

Which, on a side note, I don't recommend you look at most of the fan fiction that I’ve seen if you are at work.

The game really got its hooks into me and I'm not exactly sure why but I think I might know.

Well, it feels like a SEGA Genesis game – long story short.

Short story long - I think the best way to classify what kind of game this is, is Metroidvania.  You have a mini map and you unlock powers that later allow you to explore the rest of the levels you had previous been to and there are collectibles and upgrades you can buy in game.  As you play you can upgrade how Shantae attacks by purchasing upgrades for her hair whip attack or armor but the big mechanic is the transformations – you can turn into animals with varied attacks and abilities as well as some other inanimate objects and living things like this tree 

- to help you better get across the stages and discover the secrets of Sequin Land.

I've also read its kind of Mega Man– ish which I had never really thought about before but yeah, because I do love some Mega Man.  It has a lot of obstacles/the levels are kinds of obstacle courses like the early NES Mega Man games and there are two areas particularly in my mind – The factory in Mermaid Falls and the Hypno Baron's Castle part of the … Hypno Baron's Castle stage.  Well most of it is actually like an obstacle course now that I think about it

The score is by Jake Kauffman and man, AND if I ever make a game I want that guy doing my music.  I mentioned the factory part of Mermaid Falls before – the best track in the game and maybe even in any game I've ever heard is Counterfeit Mermaids,  its such an earworm,

You are going to be in the camp that one is better than the other (though Counterfeit Mermaids is clearly the superior track, ahem)

Its a great soundtrack, I find myself tuning into it during my commute to work and sometime even turning off my podcast or audio books to listen to this soundtrack (yes Even Neo Town Burning too).  The game's lead voice actress according IMDB is Cristina Valenzuela (sometimes credited as Cristina Vee) who sings the games title theme that also appears in the first level, Scuttle Town the first time you play the level and also when you first boot up the game its there too. POW! Give it a listen – sample plays and fades.  Its great.  This soundtrack is really memorable and still in my rotation almost a year after I played it for the first time.

The characters themselves too are varied in personality and the styles are now toted as being“in high definition”.  

Shantae is my least favorite but I think that works well in the sense of self insert. And that's not to say Shantae doesn't have a personality, she is kind of bubbly and she cares a lot about her ties such as to her family - such her uncle Mimic and her late mother - and to her friends.  The three main friends that back Shantae during her journey (that also get their own adventure in the DLC)

Sky - a somewhat more responsible friend of your that is out to give you some counsel and a ride to each stage on her cool bird

Bolo – who offers a bit of comic relief

Rotty Tops the zombie that is a true friend that shows up to support you and cheer you on, in one time literally too.  

By the way there is also Risky Boots (the best character, IMO) who is the larger than life antagonist to akin to a comic book villain.

But even with the “HD” graphics, and incredible score everything about just feels like … a Sega game.  I can't really put it to words to do it justice, like, it has the essence of games I grew up with.  I know a lot of people already had that nostalgia rush with Freedom Planet or Sonic Mania but I only just got Freedom Planet on Switch

so for me – Shantae was it.  

I felt that joy like I was 5 years old playing Sonic 2 for the first time.  I took me something embarrassing like 8 hours to beat the first time.  But after I beat it, I immediately wanted to play it again.  I almost NEVER want to replay a game after I beat it – Best case is I take a break and play it again in a year. While it took me a laughable amount of hours to beat the game the first time but by the time I was really invested and on the 3rd or 4th time replaying it, I was completing it in under 2 hours.  I was looking up speed running strats and Youtube videos of people speed running the game to compare and contrast how I played the game.  I never, ever thought that I would speed run a game. Super Metroid still takes me an embarrassing number of hours to play and I've beat that almost as many times as Shantae now.

Having played both the Xbox One and Switch versions they look pretty similar and seem to play about the same.  I noticed that the game seems to run a bit better on the Xbox One and the load times aren't as long

So I really recommend you get this game.  I'm super jealous if you've never played it, you get to experience it for the first time!  If you don't have an Xbox One but have a Switch you can get the physical version for pretty cheap, used I got this copy for about $20 and it has all the game content.  And with the DLC you can finally play as Risky Boots!

It goes without saying that the game I am most excited for this year, 2020 is going to be Shantae and the Seven Sirens.

If you don't have an Xbox or a Switch, the game is also on PC too. Steam has sales, last time the Ultimate Edition was on sale it was only about $21 (show pic) and with a plug and play controls great.  

And just as I was checking before posting this, it is on sale for $20.99 until March 30th, 2020

Its also on PS4, I guess if you don’t have any other options

but as for like a date i havent done? i think just like. being surprised with a small gift/flowers because i love gifts/flowers and then going for a nice walk somewhere pretty and then doing some activity like pottery or shopping or like.. just an activity that’s a good time!!! and then having a nice dinner or lunch (no ideal date of mine starts early bc that’s cuddling time) and then going home and watching a movie and hangin out!

Jurassic Emblem-Chapter 5

Kyaaah~!! The first boss fight in this fanfiction! Aren’t you guys excited! For a particularly special treat, listen to this while reading this chapter! (>w <)

 “What are you two dragonskin doing here at this hour?” The velociraptor named Lucina questioned. She and her bretheren weren’t pleased to see these intruders stepping out the cryogenics lab.

Teba sighed. “If you would like us to spill the honest cake with tea, we are employed by Dr.Henry-”

Warbler grabbed the wine bottle from her partner’s garments and presented it to the raptors. “We’re taking these babies with us! Pull anything outta your asses and I’ll happily dice you all up! Kehahahahaha!”

Suddenly a wave of epiphany flooded over the Exalted princess.”When I consoled that poor, unfortunate mother whose child was eaten,”Lucina said. “Was a purple-white saurian responsible for the incident?”

“So what if I was? You and me are exactly alike! After all, we both prevented great catastrophes. You killed the wo-man-man who jizzed all over your daddy’s carcass while I saved that baby’s descendant from being hung on Valm’s gates-”

“Don’t you DARE compare me to the likes of you!” Lucina was about to dive-bomb Warbler, but her amber-eyed self caught her in her arms. “Stop Future Witness. We can eviscerate these bitches AFTER we find out more about them.”

“I agree with Blue,” the green-blue raptor named Delta said. “We may be dinosaurs, but we mustn’t be so hasty.”

“I don’t know who you two bitches are, but you smell like a certain goddamn geneticist,” the brown raptor Echo growled.

“Hey Red-Blue Fish! Can I piggyback on you?” The young jungle-green dromaeosaur Charlie chippered. Despite the tense situation she was very enthusiastic.

 Teba took back the wine bottle from Warbler’s hands and placed it back in his garments. “t’would appear that no matter what era they’re in, children are very rash and impulsive.” He unfastened the pair of katana blades hung on his waist and striked them at the raptors.

Well, almost anyway. Lucina blocked the katanas with her Falchion sword with a klink! “I guess words just won’t cut it,” she muttered. “Whoever said that the pen is mightier than the sword is a giant, obese, liar.”

“Good, because I’m starting to feel a tad-little blood-thirsty,” Blue said. She and her sisters held up aqua-blue pebbles with ouroboro-fossils on them and they immediately morphed into their six-foot tall lizard forms.

Likewise, Warbler took out a similar stone, and she too transformed. But she didn’t turn into a Velociraptor nublarensis, oh no. Rather, Warbler morphed into an eight-foot all dinosaur, white and purple. She had purple V-shaped crests on her beak-like snout and similarly hued quills and spots on her tail and neck.

And indeed, Warbler puffed out her neck revealing an expansive frill ornated with purple and blood-warning patterns. Patterns that Lucina knew all two well since she was sixty days old.

“You....GGGGGRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIMMMMMMAAA~!!!!” The blue raptor(not Sole-Survivor, mind you.) had totally lost her head. “I’m going to send you back to the Permo-Triassic Extinction Event 3.5 billion times if necessary!”

KLINK! Teba had blocked Lucina’s sword attacks again but this time he wasn’t holding his weapons in his hands. They were spinning in a shield-like circle, held in place by special electro-magnetic fields produced by the samurai.

“Listen,” Teba calmly reprimanded Lucina. “I don’t particularly like hurting children; in fact, I am one to protect children. And out of all these raptors I’m facing off against, you are the most youngest and the most rash.”

“Yeah, Luci-Loosey,” Warbler taunted in a harsh sing-song tone. “You got to loose up! Kehahah! Get it, loose up? Because no matter how many times you try, your stupid family always die! KAHAHAHAHAAH!!”

More sword-on sword fighting. The other raptors were watching closely, but they would’t dare get any closer to Teba’s shīrudo-gatana lest they got blended up up like a fruit smoothie.

“This is for Chrom and Emmeryn, bastard!” Lucina eventually smashed through Teba’s defense-move and was about to chop him up into sashimi and something wet and hot smacked against her eyes, and before she knew it, an immense burning pain had coursed through her central nervous system and Lucina collasped on the floor, Falchion and all, wriggling in screaming agony from what feels like searing knives slicing her brain and eyes.

“KEHAHAHAAHAHAHAH~!! What’s wrong, Future Witness? I thought you said you were going to kill me!?” The raptors wasted no time rushing to their comrade’s aide. "Oh yes, of course! I’m a dilophosaur, and dilos puke out a painful neurotoxin that blinds the eye and numbs the muscle! Don’t worry, I’ll end you and your bloodline’s pain!”

Dismayed that his swords were shattered by the couch-shredder that was Luci’s Falchion, Teba took out an aqua-blue stone from his kimono. Shaking and holding the stone, he had morphed into what appeared to be a deep-red salamander the size of an alligator, the snout black with an iridescent-blue chin. His dorsal fin was not unlike that of a lionfish, and the limbs were not-quite legs but not traditional fins either(think of the limbs of a Queensland Lungfish). They were a marvelous light-blue color and so was his caudal fin, embellished even further with red outlines and an eye-spot. As lavish his form was, Teba reluctantly transformed into this state due to the fact that though he can breathe atmospheric air, terrestrial locomotion was a massive pain in the ass, slithering deliberately and dragging the belly with stubby limbs that didn’t had fingers. 

At least I’m quipped with sharp piercing spines and predatory teeth, Teba thought to himself as the reptilian birds of prey leaped on to him and Warber. Echo just narrowly missed the dorsal spines and bit down unto the amphibian’s flanks, which as starting to tear, albeit with great tediousness from the ganoid scales enveloping Teba’s body. Delta had landed to the opposite side and attempted to rip off Teba’s right forelimb. The salamnder tried to turn his head to bite unto Delta, but the light-green raptor quickly jabbed her claws into the tetrapod’s gills, a waterfall of dark blood pouring out like some dead Kool-Aid Man. Teba had gagged and sputtered and soon, he passed out.

Blue and Charlie faced Warbler. The purple-white dilophosaur had tried spitting her venom at the two raptors, but they were too quick and the dark goo simply flew straight out the window(and unto Byleth’s eyes below) or smacked right into a portrait of the late King Gustav. Blue landed just beneath Warbler’s neck, grabbed her frill, and started to pull. Charlie landed on the dilo’s back, and sank her sickle-talons and teeth into her flesh, the entire sensation of ripping flesh too much for Warbler to bear. 

And things just keep getting better. Noticing the Midnight Merlot bottle containing the embryos on its side next to Teba’s unconscious body, Delta picked the bottle up and thrust it into Warbler’s mouth.

“-!AHP-AH uh ooi-!?” Warbler gibbered. And with Charlie noticing the grand opportunity-

KLINSHHH~!!! 

She closed Warbler’s beak onto the glass, the bottle shattering apart alongside the embryos and coolant gas seeped out in a thick, ghostly smoke as Warbler’s beak started to frostbite.

“B-Bitches...” The dilophosaur glared at the raptors now menacingly, “bitches like you deserve to have their stomachs pumped full of  Duma’s semen! You just murdered 12 babies of 12 Heroes!”

“That’s the worse joke I’ve ever heard in my life,” Blue said, tightly pulling at Warbler’s frill now. “Isn’t that coming from a someone who just ate a newborn like BBQ bacon-burger dipped in wine?”

With that line, there was loud SHHRRRIIIP! as the non-Lucina raptor tore off Warbler’s frill and thick gushes of dark crimson had flowed out, Warbler collapsed on the ground, and much like her fell comrade Teba, sputtered and gagged before spewing out a sweet-smelling pool of digested meat, cartilage, and oozy organs from her stomach. 

Blue walked over to a heavily panting Lucina. “C’mon, Future Witness, let’s patch you up and flush that disgustingly foul-venom from your eyes.” She picked her up bridal-style and that’s when she and her sisters noticed that they were surrounded by Heroes who were groggy and stirred from the boss fight earlier.

Horn Skuld and Chrom were one of them.

Charlie tried to ease the situation.” Umm, what’s up, fellow mammals? Any of you fellows want some Reese’s Banana sliders?”

for context, I'm from Scotland :))

1. favourite place in your country?

Lower Largo because its beautiful and I have so many memories of holidays there, or Edinburgh because I love how it goes from modern to ancient in the span of a few yards.

2. do you prefer spending your holidays in your country or travel abroad?

Scotland! I've never left the UK (and even then I've only left Scotland twice) so I definitely prefer spending my holidays here.

3. does your country have access to sea?

I live in the UK. yes. yes we do.

specifically I live on the east coast of Scotland and its pretty much beaches galore.

4. favourite dish specific for your country?

if you'd asked me this before January I'd have said mince and tatties, (haggis, minced meat and mashed potatoes) but I've been a veggie since January so my favourite native dish is probably either vegetarian haggis (which is pretty much oats and spices) or scotch broth (a soup that usually has lamb or beef in it but my family has always made it with only veg)

5. favourite song in your native language?

Maraiche by Nitework!! such a bop (I don't speak much Gaelic but scotland's only native languages are Scottish Gaelic and English so I figured I'd pick my favourite specifically Scottish song)

6. most hated song in your native language?

anything in gaelic?? but if I had to narrow it down, it'd be "machair" (field), "jings" (not necessarily gaelic but it's a Scots word used to express surprise) or "seadh" (pronounced "sh-ugh" and means "yes").

Irish. unfortunately we don't get taught much about the complicated history Ireland has, so we don't learn about the troubles. I find myself struggling to remember that Northern Ireland is a part of the UK while the Republic isn't, etc.

bampot! it pretty much means "prick" and it's so fun to say. try it!

I feel like people expect me to say rabbie (Robert) burns but honestly, iain crichton smith or norman maccaig are my favourite scottish poets. I don't really have a fav Scottish writer (but I do recommend Ian Rankin's "a question of blood"!)

oh my GOD if I see another English translations of Scots poems (like Rabbie Burns poems) I will combust. they're written in Scots/Gaelic for a reason! please don't put them into English because they completely lose their meaning!!

hogmanay (new years eve celebrations) or the highland games are weird concepts to people who aren't Scottish. my cousins are English and celebrate hogmanay with us even if they don't understand it, and they love the Highland games, but in England they have nothing like that.

TV? not really. River city is probably the most famous example and I don't enjoy it. but still game and chewin' the fat are iconic and I fucking love them. film? sign me the fuck up, I love a good Scottish film. sunshine on leith? trainspotting? highlander? the angels share? brilliant! poetic cinema!

I hate the stereotype that we're all ginger and love booze. that's not always the case. e.g. I've got light brown/dark blonde (???) hair and so does my sister (but my mum has ginger hair so that kind of defeats my argument)

I agree with the one that football fans are angry. have you ever seen a celtic and a rangers fan get along? nope.

yes!! unfortunately if its not a war you don't get taught about it in school so there's a lot of things I don't know. what I do know is that the town I used to live in was the old capital of my county (my county is Fife and the old capital was a place called Dalgynch at the time, but now Markinch. the capital of Fife now is dunfermline.)

18. do you speak with a dialect of your native language?

i speak in a fife/Scots dialect depending on who I'm with. if I'm with family it's very fifer/Scots with a wee bit of glaswegian/doric (aberdonian) slang chucked in there, but if I'm with my friends it's toned down scots because a lot of them come from what I call 'posh' backgrounds and don't really understand slang all that well.

fuckin love it!!!!! the saltire fills me with so much pride and the lion rampant (the yellow and red one, not the white and green one) is beautiful. I love 'o flow'r of scotland' as well!!! a beautiful song that makes me very nostalgic for absolutely no reason.

either rugby, football or golf. all fairly popular.

haggis and buckfast! gies me the boak (makes me feel sick). the world would be a better place without them tbh

the people make me proud and ashamed. proud because we're mostly lovely. ashamed because of the football fans who hurl sectarian abuse at each other at the old firm (rangers vs celtic) games. (sectarianism in scotland is Catholic v protestant pretty much but its not a big thing unless you're a football fan, unlike me)

loads of people love buckfast (it's like a tonic wine) but I cannot get behind it. desgustang. loads of people like proper Scottish whiskey as well, distilled in the Highlands. can't say I do as I've never tried it, but it smells nice and I can certainly see the appeal.

England! Scotland and England have a very... complicated rivalry.

I'd have loved to have been born in the outer hebrides (said "heh-bri-dees") because the islands up north are fucking stunning. especially north uist.

     After GOD completes HIS prophecy about Abram's      descendants, HE returns to the covenant ritual that      began with Abram dividing & arranging the halves      of the animals GOD had instructed him to bring      [Genesis 15:9].

     Now the sun goes down, & GOD completes the ritual.

     Whether Abram is now awake & sees it with his own      physical eyes, or sees this event in his vision or      dream, we don't know for sure.

     Either way, what Abram sees is remarkable.

     In the dark, two items move between the halves of      the animals. One is a smoking fire pot, something      that served as an oven in Abram's day.

     The other is a flaming torch.

     In the narrative itself, we're not told what these two      items represent.

     However, fire is often associated with both GOD's      judgment & HIS holiness.

     In addition, these elements of smoke, fire, & the      various kinds of animals later used for sacrifice      under the Law point to GOD's future relationship      with Israel.

     Finally, in moving between the two halves of the      animals, GOD is apparently finalizing the      agreement between HIMSELF & HIS people      through Abram.

     This aspect, in particular, is important for its symbolism.

     Scholars suggest that this ritual—passing between      the halves of sacrificed animals—was meant to      imply a binding oath on those who participated.

     By walking between the animals, the person was      accepting that same destruction if they broke      their end of the bargain.

     Pointedly, note that Abram does not pass between      the halves—only GOD does, via the symbolism      of the pot & flame.

     The promise GOD has made here is      entirely dependent on      HIS will & HIS work.

     Abram had begun this part of the conversation by      asking the LORD how he would know if GOD      would keep HIS promise to give Abram & his      descendants the land of Canaan.

     Abram's dramatic experience of GOD's answer in      performing this covenant ritual would surely have      made a lifelong impression on him.

Context Summary

     Genesis 15:1–21 falls between Abram's heroic rescue of      Lot in Genesis 14 & his less-than-heroic choice to have      a child with his wife's servant in chapter 16.

     Chapter 15 features Abram's hard questions to the LORD      about how the lofty promises of uncountable descendants      & possession of the land will be kept.

     GOD responds, in part, by formalizing HIS covenant      promises to Abram with an elaborate ritual.

           HE also reveals to Abram details            about the difficult circumstances            his descendants will face            before they come back to            take possession of the land            ''in the fourth generation.''

Chapter Context

     Genesis 15 consists entirely of a long encounter      between the LORD & Abram.

     When the ''WORD of the LORD'' comes to Abram in a      vision to bring reassurance of GOD's support for him,      Abram takes the opportunity to press GOD with questions.

     Abram asks both about his childlessness & how he can      know he will one day possess the land of Canaan.

     GOD responds, & Abram believes.

     GOD's response includes leading Abram through a      covenant ritual involving slaughtered animals, as well      as a prophecy about the future of Abram's descendants      before the time will come to occupy the Promised Land.

     So it intimates that GOD's covenants with man are      made by sacrifice, [Psalm 50:5].

     The bounds of the land granted are stated.

           In this CH we perceive            in Abram faith struggling            against, & triumphing            over, unbelief.

     Wonder not, believers, if you meet with seasons      of darkness& distress. But it is not the will of GOD      that you should be cast down:

           fear not; for all that HE was            to Abram HE will be to you.

     And the sun went down—The light of day is gone. The      covenant is now formally concluded.

           Abram had risen to the height of            faith in the GOD of promise.

           He is come into the position of the            father of the faithful.

     It refers to a patriarch & HIS seed chosen out of a      coexisting race.

My goal for 2017 was to beat 50 games. Unless I finish anything else over the next couple of days (doubtful), my actual number is 46, which I’m still quite happy with.

Some of these were games I’d already started before 2017 (e.g. Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, which I played most of throughout 2016 and finished in January). Many were small indie games, some only a few minutes long (e.g. Secrets Agent, which is maybe ten minutes). Some were more middling offerings (e.g. Aerannis, which I clocked 8 hours in), and some were the big, exciting games that 2017 is coming to be known for. There are also many games I played significant amounts of this year that do not count towards the above number because I haven’t finished them (like World of Final Fantasy, which I got for Christmas last year but still haven’t finished despite returning to it every couple of months).

DLC also makes calculating that number a little more difficult, especially the way DLC is more frequently being handled. Final Fantasy XV was released towards the end of 2016, and I ‘finished’ it, at the latest, in early 2017. But that was only the main story. There are a few DLC episodes out now (I’ve played two of them) as well as story improvements and a bigger DLC campaign. I could finish those, but the developers have stated that there’s going to be even more DLC in 2018, which is bizarre for a game that’s a year old, but less bizarre now than it used to be. Breath of the Wild’s DLC took a while to be released (also not part of the above number for that reason), and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 looks to be releasing DLC until at least autumn 2018. For a person who likes his games to be one and done, this trend is frustrating. Companies want their games to last longer, to remain fresh in our minds so we can give them more money. This is largely antithetical to the pursuit of games as an art form, and it’s also annoying. I like finishing things. Not knowing when the DLC is gonna stop robs me of the satisfaction of saying a game is complete, of adding it to my end of year count.

The best game I played that came out this year is almost certainly Persona 5. For all its failings, it is a solid, polished RPG that at least tries to tackle social inequality. Most of the games I really loved that I played this year are actually from years prior, however. I’m glad I finished Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne this year, because it made me appreciate Persona 5 even more.

I dove into two older series I’ve always loved this year. One is Breath of Fire. The only BoF game I’d completed before was IV, but I’d played a lot of III as well. I went through I, II, and III in 2017, finishing the entire main series (Dragon Quarter notwithstanding). IV remains my favourite in the series, but all the games are oozing with charm and personality. Very few games manage to feel as original as BoF, even though they are, at the series’ core, standard JRPGs.

The other series I dove into is Xenosaga. Last year I replayed Xenosaga Episode I. This year I replayed Episode II and then finally, finally finished Episode III. I’ve long considered I to be one of my favourite games of all time, but III is a masterpiece that manages to surpass it. Its only faults are in the spaces where you can tell the series was supposed to have more titles in it before it was cancelled prematurely, and maybe one annoying sidequest. And the fanservice. Otherwise it is nearly perfect, and ends the series beautifully. The KOS-MOS showdown near the end has got to be one of my favourite gaming moments ever.

On the indie side of things I loved Read Only Memories, the queer sci-fi I’ve always wanted; Curtain, an artful representation of abusive relationships; Even the Ocean, a mindful environmental fable with impeccable mechanics; We Know the Devil, one of the most poetically written visual novels I’ve ever played; Lieve Oma, a touching tribute to memory; and Strange Flesh, a bizarre gay sex beat-em-up. I also loved Longest Night and Longest Night: Lost Constellation, two free side games for Night in the Woods, which is definitely on my list of games to play for 2018. If you were curious but not sold on NitW, play those two games and they will sell you on it.

Which brings me to the games I’m looking forward to playing (and/or beating) in 2018. Night in the Woods is up there, and they just released a fancy new expanded edition, so it seems like the perfect time to finally jump in. The new Steven Universe game, Save the Light, is out now as well, and given how good Attack the Light is, I would be a fool not to play this one. Blue Reflection also has me curious, as a Persona-lite game with magical girls, even though it’s gotta be a fanservicey mess. And I can’t forget about Tacoma for more queer sci-fi.

I plan on doing a deeper dive into the Shin Megami Tensei series as well. I’m already playing Persona Q and Tokyo Mirage Sessions, and 2018 is the year I finish both of them. Once those are off my plate, I can jump into Digital Devil Saga, which was gifted to me this year, and then more of the core series, maybe starting with the first Shin Megami Tensei on iOS. Who knows when SMT V on the Switch will be out, but I want to burn through more of the series before it gets here.

I’m also playing and plan on finishing Atelier Sophie (might check out more Atelier after), Beat Sneak Bandit (and I still have Bumpy Road to play to finish my Simogo backlog before they announce their new game), Bravely Second (the devs keep hinting at a Bravely Third), Fire Emblem Fates (it’s just Revelations left, and I wanna beat it before getting to Echoes which was a Christmas gift), Valkyria Chronicles II (stoked for VC 4!), and as I’ve already mentioned, World of FF and Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

In my backlog to be hopefully played this year are Horizon Zero Dawn (I’ve been wanting to play this since it was announced!), I Am Setsuna, Kentucky Route Zero, Lost Dimension, Mass Effect 3, Muramasa, Nights of Azure, Owlboy, and lots, lots more.

Some games coming out in 2018 I’m looking forward to are Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Hacker’s Memory, Radiant Historia Perfect Chronology, Alliance Alive, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, Ooblets, Heart Forth Alicia, The Last of Us 2, and Kingdom Hearts III (not sure about 2018 for those last two though).

Shout-out to Splatoon 2, the only multiplayer game to keep me playing even though it doesn’t satisfy my craving for endings because it never fucking ends. It’s just that good.

I hope 2018 is relatively slow for new game releases, so I can do some much needed catch-up. 2018 also looks like it could be a good year for my writing career, as long as I focus enough, so I’m only planning on beating a modest 40 games.
