Procopius of Caesarea, c. 500?-c. 560?, the last major Classical Roman Historian (not "Byzantine" in the narrow sense) .Our major source on the reign of Justinian (apart from his laws of course).

Circa 540-550, Procopius was furiously scribbling something, the only thing he could do after retiring from his position as "legal counselor". In his hand is an ancient Greek comic mask for his favorite author, Aristophanes. He was extremely fond of quoting his Cloud, especially in the Secret History.

Photios, the 9th-century Patriarch of Constantinople, believed that Procopius was actually a greater author of (Greek) history than Thucydides, or in his words, the most brilliant "rhetor" in the field of historical writing. He was unaware of the existence of Secret History. The appearance (in the 17th century) and utterly confirmation (in the late 19th-early 20th centuries) of Secret History would revolutionize the perception of Byzantine and Roman history.

Procopius' perception of himself as a rhetor and a jurist is also unified. In fact he considered rhetoric to be a necessary condition of jurisprudence. And historical writing, likewise, is a necessary extension of rhetoric. This also explains why he took up historical writing after his “compulsory retirement” from his post as "legal adviser" to Belisarius, the two "disciplines" being completely separate in modern scholarship. But at that time they were united by "rhetoric".

In any case, Procopius's rhetorical achievements make the reign of Justinian and the Mediterranean world of the early 6th century one of the most richly depicted periods of Roman history. But such a detailed picture is highly problematic. For Procopius presents three very different works: one seemingly objective and even somewhat propagandistic Wars, one very erotic and violent Secret History that is entirely abusive of the emperor and his regime, and one Buildings that glorifies the emperor, who had previously been criticized to the point of inhumanity.

Behind Wars, Secret History, and Buildings are there three Procopiuses, or is it the metamorphosis of one Procopius? If the former, why does he present himself as three very different persons? If the latter, how does this one man reveal his true self under three very different faces? This is in fact the central topic of the study of Procopius. And one simply cannot begin to study the period in which he was writing without first realizing this question. And this question is the mystery that Procopius' masterful rhetoric has left for future generations.

💭 What inspires/motivates you and your writing?

Honestly it's feedback, comments, fanart, questions, engagement, etc. I love storytelling, but I can tell myself cool stories in my brain for much less effort. So knowing that people are enjoying and looking forward to future chapters are what help me keep my motivation to commit plot to page.

📗 Do you want to write something outside of fanfiction? If so, what about?

Yeah! A deep desire I've always had for a while is to write a story that resonated with folks enough to make fanart and fanfic about. To inspire in others what drove me to become a writer (A feeling that I have experienced with awiw and am grateful to the folks who drew fanart for it.)

I've had various stories I've tinkered with over the years. My first was a zombie novel I wrote a long time ago. It was pretty basic overall, but still one I am fond of.

Then there was a gearpunk setting I had developed whose central conceit was a secondary world with a lot of mixed cultures (Korean/Norse, Greek City States/Byzantine) that I got way too deep in the weeds worldbuilding and had trouble actually producing a story from.

I had a fun magic system/lore for a setting in which every time some wizard achieved immortality, the god of death would rip out bits of the magic system that allowed it, so where once great magic was possible, now people had to make do with what was left. Aesthetically, it was heavily inspired by the Indian ocean trade culture of the pre-colonial era.

Then there was the Onyx Crown, one of my last really serious attempts that had a setting and story that I do still really like. The central premise is a twist on the protagonist being the lost heir of a fallen kingdom, in that they are the heir to a dark lord figure, and she has to try and survive once the place his loyal general stashed and raised her is found out.

Now, in the last few months, I'm just starting to tinker with a setting in which its focused on borrowers (The small folk who live in your walls, borrowing what you wont miss, think Ariety if your familiar with that Ghibli movie.) but the setting is a Dark Souls-Esc fallen magical kingdom where the hubris of mankind has led the folk they used to live alongside to suffer a horrific fate. The story takes place on an old flying city that to the borrowers might as well be a continent. I might reuse Tali, the protagonist of the Onyx Crown, for that story. Not sure though.

Once I read a comic strip from the amazing Sunsetagain (thanks a lot to her for everything). You know, I have a habit – I can't get into bad finals. I just don't want to believe in them. I do not believe. And then I began to play in the text according to the post-canon regarding the Generals.

On the left is the RK800 chimer according to the original design of Byzantine Generals. On the right is my Connor, partially restored and received some “native” trim parts. As for me, this is a little more than a picture.

so i've seen quite a few artists who only draw certain characters. most often its literally a couple of characters present in almost all of their works as if they gave their lives to these characters.

and my question is - why them? why you are drawing transformers? maybe you can relate yourself with some of them? all of your art (its fricking incredible) that i've seen is TF fanart, but for me it looks like you're telling some kind of personal story through these characters. something like connecting different parts of your personality to different robots. or..... i dont know!

if you are confused what do i mean: do you draw transformers because you just like them or is there something more mportant than just a beautiful frame?..

I'm more confused regarding initial statement. If it suggests that "a lot of people draw certain characters as fan art, so why you, as a part of that mass, draw them, by considering, you might just draw originals" would lead to my answer where why pople draw fan art as a phenomenon. But if it suggests "oftenly people constantly draw certain characters, which is close to them, in a namber of 2-3, so why you draw existing random characters, by considering, you might just draw originals" would lead to my subjective attitudes to Tf and drawing.

Well, Idk why, but people in classical academies of arts took particular stories: biblical stories, greek, folklore, historical etc. and drew them for graduate thesis. Previously was allowed to take only biblical stories, then slowly started to allow greek, egypt theme. In Russia, it was generally strict and iconography was the main type of painting somewhere right up to the 18th century. Prior founding of the first academy there was foreign masters but it rather an isolated cases. Byzantine icons consists of canons. Drawing icons is also a separate discipline in universities nowadays. It's of course not exectly the same thing as drawing modern "fandom fan arts" but spiritually ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Like how much world of warcraft is a fan art on Tolkien?

This is generally a specific question where fan art starts and where the original. In iconography, signing works and following the canons used to cause a theological controversy, canons and representatives of the god will or your inner understandance of god, eh, I don't really remember in particular. Long time ago I read a good long post of some orthodox priest, but that was a long time ago.

I draw out of need, like taking a shit. I wouldn't say I have principles regarding art and transformers. And I wouldn't say I have principles of not having principles when there is a need in them. It's just not a constant thing. Sometimes I sit and look at my pictures within music. Like if a result makes me feel something then I did it well. Maybe that's why it comes out so personal. And even if I draw TF as a manifestation or something like that, would be kind of odd if I just wouldn't like transformers. Just in case, people are different. This text is not intended to be a guide. But I'm glad if it will help in something.

Close-up of Sansa Stark from my Six Fanarts meme! Hence all the unfinished edges from coloring beyond the frame. I rather like the look of it this way, though, and I wanted to share Sansa at full size because she’s the one I had the most leeway with and the one that ended up being the most fun. It’s been a long time since I drew her, and I wanted to come up with my own design not based on the show. Tbh, though, I never had a super definitive design for her, even pre-GoT, and looking at my old drawings, I think my past takes on her were kinda generic: just another blue-eyed girl in a ren-fest dress with red hair. 

So although I didn’t want to spend a ton of time or research on this little sketch, I did try to branch out a bit by playing around with some influences from different cultures and time periods. Sansa is older than current canon here -- post-ADoS, perhaps -- and styled in Northern fashions, as she’s happily returned home. She’s wearing a looped torc inspired by Iron Age Brittonic jewelry and an ancient Latgalian-esque bronze circlet, in keeping with the bronze crowns worn by Robb and the Kings of Winter of old. Her direwolf pin is not terribly specific to any source but mainly echoes Celtic penannular brooches. Her dress I obviously didn’t bother figuring out much past the neckline, but I was thinking something luxurious but loose fitting, rich in adornment but simple in cut, with fur trim and heavy brocade; similar in shape to an earlier medieval kirtle or houppelande, perhaps, or those ornate robe-like gowns that I think might be Byzantine or Kievan Rus’. (I’m afraid I clearly don’t know how to properly name or describe them.) Something with long, split sleeves over a chemise, at any rate, and without a structured bodice or waist. And with a fur cloak over it all, of course, and lots of grays, blues, and reds for both her Stark and Tully roots. :)

- anaire!!! her hair is inspired by merida’s mom from brave and i feel like they might have similar vibes in general... i drew her in fancy clothes for some reason?? really most of them are in fancy clothes but her specifically is fancy. there should be like three different fabrics in just the tiny bit i drew. idk what their names are (rip my fashion knowledge) but they’re there!

- fingon!!! fingon is my absolute favorite character to draw because 1. he’s my second favorite character in the silmarillion 2. i feel compelled to make my favorite character very Pretty and while i still feel the need to do that it doesn’t trigger crippling anxiety in me. anyway out of everyone here he’s closest to how i actually imagine he looks like. like all of these except argon are pretty close to how i imagine them but fingon specifically. am i the only one who feels like he very often has a smile just three degrees shy of being a challenging smirk?

-  turgon is actually based on a rejected design for caranthir lmao. i gave him this cool hat thing based on a crown before i decided i would only give the ‘high princes(s)’ crowns for some arbitrary reason... anyway when i actually linearted the thing it looked kinda terrible so i scraped it and his circlet is all that remains

- i gave aredhel robin hood’s hat because no one is here to stop my impulses. i made the feather red for some bizarre reason... not sure how much i like it now... her outfit was 100% inspired by this fanart from azaisya... .tis a great hunting outfit me feels... also it fits the robin hood vibe lmao

(am i saying aredhel steals from the rich to give to the poor? no cuz she’s royalty she is the rich. also, it’s valinor. depending on your headcanon no one is poor)

- argon i have no idea what happened and im still baffled by his design. clearly he’s at some party...??? i have no mental image for him so i googled his name and squinted at designs until i came up with something and in hindsight maybe i should just go back to my pinterest board full of byzantine clothing. anyway he has braids ala fingon, a feather ala aredhel, and... ....... turgon’s.... internal attitude?

1. Anakin’s hair is dark blond, not brown, and not appreciably darker than Luke’s (at comparable ages/lighting).

2. Just say no to cinnabuns. Leia wears them all of once; there’s no reason child!Leia or AU!Leia should have them, and canon Leia almost always wears braids anyway.

3. WE HATE POINTED EARS FOREVER, PRECIOUS

4. Korra is not thin and has blue-green eyes, not bright blue or dark blue. 

5. Jyn’s/Felicity Jones’ eyes are hazel-green, not clear green. Rey’s are hazel.

It doesn’t hurt that so many are gold and greens worn by blondes. Plus the amount of gold chains and rings and necklaces fits with a king who brought enough jewelry to actually finance his kingdom and war effort and would commission and wear the Nauglamir. Though, yeah, that was a piece that was like the Egyptian pectoral breastplate that wrapped around the neck and shoulders and down the chest, not just a chain of office seen in Tudor portraiture. But here’s another reason for Tudor!elves.

Heyyy team Tudor Noldor 2k17!! I go for a way more subdued look than you describe here, but who wants to just stick every elf in a generic tunic? boring.

For some of them it’s a mocking out of love (they just get the short end of my love because everyone else so many neglected groups needing attention). And it’s a spectrum- some like tastefully refined palettes. They aren’t all Egalmoth. (let’s face it, he’s actually Exhibit A for excesses in Noldor taste). But yes, my biggest complaint was that the same tunic or tunic variation is so boring- boring to look at, boring to describe. A doublet and multi-patterned hose- that sounds more interesting to read, let alone see.

I feel hypocritical bitching about fanart, but there you go. Plus, the LotR movies put Arwen and Galadriel in the same scoop neck no belt bell-sleeved gown and I got sick of it with Silm fanart copying it.

Roman!elves was actually my original (waaay back) headcanon for valinor hahaha though at some point i had no idea what i was doing anymore

I have sunk too much time and effort into tudor!elves, but if I didn’t, the early Chinese hanfu or Roman tunica are my alternatives. When I remember the equatorial location for the Valinorean locales or when I think of what ‘simpler Vanayr fashion is what again’

Ancient Roman + Bynzantine + Folklorico. Ribboned updos, fresh flowers or fake flowers in hair, but also hats. Hats and hats and straw hats and keeping out of the sun and Ancalimë with a big shepherdess hat. The status-thing again of having a hairdresser to sew you hair into a mess of artificially curled and oiled and perfumed hair. Oh- makeup to hide any sign of aging. Well, this pretty lame attempt of “Byzantine”-like “fan artwork” is something I started doing in April-May of 2013 inspired by some lore and lore-related speculations I had  but never finished it abandoning it around the same period ( since as you can see by the guy’s face I really can’t draw lol), but I really regret not finishing it.  Basically it was supposed to be an ancient looking, damaged, Byzantine-style mosaic depicting Gwyn’s Firstborn (in the middle, his face was supposed to be damaged,erased as he got expunged from history, pretty much like his statues were ruined) along with his Warriors of Sunlight/Dragon Slayers (he actually holds a dragon-head, and a host of Sunlight Warriors was supposed to be depicted  beside him holding Dragonslayer Spears). Just once again returning to the lore video about Archdragon Peak, possible Byzantine parallels about Way of White and Gods and some dragon-worship stuff I made some time ago https://youtu.be/m-7ui2ie23k   which was a really difficult video to make (possibly even most difficult I’ve made so far) Basically this topic was one of my very first ideas when I started making DaS3 videos and I did some drafts for this video, but since I wasn’t really sure about the architectural things (I mean I had this impression, but one thing is that “well it’s kinda obvious” and another is actually checking everything and proving to be certain enough to make a video about) I had to wait for several months and ask for help from guys who actually studied architecture, to finally be certain about architecture-related theories.   And in the end, when I finally made that video, I even had to draw charts for myself to order the different parts of video so they would make the most sense (as initially I had an old draft) But why is that “fanart” in the post related is that I started making it back in 2013 and it was inspired by some guesses regarding the Way of White and Gwyn’s firstborn I had then.    As for the characters on this “fanart”, from the ruined statue of Sunlight Altar, where Gwyn’s Firstborn was depicted with Dragonslayer Spear (only back then it was just a spear, not the Spear/Sword hybrid Nameless King actually wields), so I wanted to draw him with dragon-head as a trophy (however, this is rather a blue drake, likely bred by Anor Londo to hunt and use them as guards of New Londo ruins, but that’s a speculation), as for other guys, I only drew 1 and a half, but Firstborn was supposed to be depicted with a host of his Sunlight Warriors who were meant to bear Dragonslayer Spears.   And regarding the style, I really can’t draw, but I wanted to make it a Byzantine-like mosaic because back in 2013 I had this idea that there possibly were some Byzantine inspirations for the Way of White (like Byzantine-like cleric armor, East-West Shield, Greek names, stuff that I also discussed in the lore video).  But I saw that I can’t draw a normal face for another guy so I abandoned this artwork eventually and kinda regret it now lol  Because really I was very excited when in Dark Souls 3 I first found the Leo Ring that all the more proved the relation between Sun’s Firstborn and Dragonslayers, but then I visited Archdragon Peak (with its “Hagia Sophia” and Byzantine-inspired architecture in general) and Firstborn himself XD  Now, of course as it was a blind guess really and “fanart” (if this pathetic copying of real life mosaic can be called and “art”) so lots of things are also wrong.  First of all, I thought that Firstborn would have a different crown and simply drew it after real-life mosaic depicting Emperor Justinian I.  Also (and I actually forgot about it, as what I remembered about this picture was the main idea about Byzantine-like mosaic, Sunlight Warriors/Dragonslayers) there I also drew a blade which is now somewhat reminiscent of the Morion Blade, but it was actually inspired by Korean/Japanese    七支刀 Shichishito Seven-Branched Sword (and possibly Morion Blade could be inspired by it too) and it was supposed to be just a ceremonial thing, not an actual weapon.   Now, the “fanart” was failed, but I still wanted to write down this story to emphasize how important was the “Archdragon Peak” video to me

I'd love something exploring why the city has decided on calling Eslingen Rathe's "black dog", or maybe a scenario where Caiazzo uses Eslingen's relationship with Rathe as a distraction leading to much angst (but pls don't end on a unhappy resolution) Rescuing each other from uncomfortable situations/criminals/too much work?

How Rathe deals with Eslingen's coming promotion to the City Guard would also be great! Or even an AU, where they meet later--do they still find each other? (Other very intriguing AU ideas: integrating soulmates into the already pretty wacky magic system of Astreiant, an arranged marriage AU because Caiazzo and the surintendant want to unite Astreiant's lawful element with it's unlawful element...)

The whole mysterious past these two have going on with each other is very intriguing to me, and while I'm much more of a fan of enemies to lovers, the other way around is also good. Was Julia just a beard? Did Vicious resent their relationship? How did they come to feel so violently about each other? did Vicious keep Spike as a pet, that also happens to be really good at murder?

Or maybe, their relationship had always been violent, and the whole killing thing was just a courtship gone horribly wrong?

or maybe Spike meets Vicious during on of their bounty hunts, and distracts him from following the crew with sex? maybe they get locked into a treasure vault together, and need to wait for rescue, and things happen?

or maybe, possibly, despite being riddled with gunshots, Spike survives his last stand, and Vicious regrets his hasty decision of killing him, and (okay, this maybe slightly ooc) nurses him back to health?

- John is a member of the Justice League, and so he had to have met Batman. How does that go? Bonus point if it ends with Constantine in Bruce Wayne's life and bed! - Or maybe Constantine meets the Bruce Wayne persona on one of his adventures, and expresses his utter bewilderment at posh people, as he does, and somehow they end up having sex to resolve their issues? - or perhaps, Batman needs a ritual done, and so he turns to Constantine, who convinces him that nothing can be done without a sex magic ritual?

Orion Black/Abraxas Malfoy

--you know what would be really cool? If they had a livelong relationship with each other, and only reluctantly married to get kids (also the reason Orion Black married his cousin, perhaps? yes please. Fred can be alive (I prefer that, actually), and I prefer if Ginny wasn't fridged, but I'd really like this way of connecting Harry to the Weasley family. does it start when they are still in school? George really wants to repay Harry for the Triwizard money, and manages to con Harry into some sort of relationship because he feels like that's the only thing he's really good for?

Or, they get together after war is over, and Harry/Ginny stops working out--maybe they fall into bed with each other after a boring Ministry event, and drunkenly decide they need some excitement in their life? Or perhaps, a prank gone wrong looks them into a broom cupboard with or without sex pollen?

The love potions they sell in store are accidentally keyed to George, and Harry manages to get dosed, and somehow it works out great?

Severus Snape/Charlie Weasley

Snape needs to lay low and comes to Romania? Somehow, Snape survives Nagini and brews the best burn healing paste, of which Charlie is always in need?

Charlie comes back as Professor for Care of Magical Creatures, and manages to seduce Snape? I'd prefer if Charlie was at least 17 if they start boning while he's still in school. does it complicate Snape's spying duties? does Charlie dress up in lingerie?

Bungou Stray Dogs (fanfic+fanart)

Akutagawa Ryuunosuke/Dazai Osamu/Nakajima Atsushi 

- pls give me violent relationships based on mutual assured destruction

- i’d love a relationship based on one-upmanship, on a general push-and-pull, even all the way at the beginning in chapter 9 of the manga, where Dazai is like "My new subordinate is so much better than you ever were."—and they have such a great chemistry between all of them. I’d like it even if you split up the pairings! Each one you could do is very intriguing!

- Dazai is always so hyper-focused on pretty women, and yet, for some reason, most of the people he surrounds himself with are pretty boys, and he’s such a mastermind with all other things, it would be super intriguing to see him have this epic blindspot of how attracted he is to Atsuchi and Akutagawa— Atsuchi and Akutagawa make such great foils too, they’re such great rivals (for Dazai’s affections?)

- does someone finally look them in a room together, to make them work out their tension?

- there’s this new ability user called EL James, and their ability is sex pollen, and it surprises the three of them on a mission? alternatively, I'll take other authors with wacky powers :P

- I’d even love an AU where, say, Dazai is some rich mogul who likes to keep pets, or anything really, as long as you preserve their character dynamics. Or soulmate AUs!

- Dazai manipulates them into sleeping with each other for the greater good, and only then does he notice that he kinda likes them too, and feels much angst about it, or maybe Atsuchi can’t take Akutagawa’s pining, except accidentally he sleeps with him, and then they seduce Dazai together?

- I’d also be very interested in encounters with literary figures that haven’t been seen yet

Sesshoumaru/Inuyasha

am here for all the contrived reasons to get them together. Hate!sex? Yes! Sex Pollen? You got me! Arranged marriage by their dad to keep dog demons with dog demons? I am here!

What I like is their contemptuous relationship with each other, that nevertheless evolves – I like that they claim to not spit on the other if they were on fire, but when push comes to shove, they do help each other, and defend the other from their enemies. I like that they are halfbrothers, that they clearly recognise the power in each other, the underlying class issues, and all.

How about a small snippet of them teaming up together? Surprised by sex pollen, or a gender-changing well? time loops would be awesome! as would Inuyasha and Sesshomaru meeting again in the future, with Inuyasha time-travelling and Sesshomaru getting there the conventional way. Would also read soulmates!fic, or a sleeping beauty AU

I see both Inuyasha and Sesshomaru as fairly aggressive and forthright, and would prefer you not to characterise either of them as submissive (outside the bedroom).

Would love this at any point during canon, but please don't change the setting! Adding additional worlbuilding is really awesome, though.

- do they sleep together during their days on the run, to keep themselves warm and then it turns into more? do they get caught in an old sex pollen trap somewhere?

- Saphira and Thorn go into heat and it transfers over to their riders?

- would also love post-canon things, where Eragon goes to look for wild dragons, and finds where Murtagh went instead, or something

- AU, in which Galbatorix makes them marry while Eragon is captive, and because they said their vows in Elvish, it's still valid after they kill him, and they have to deal with hearing each others thoughts and being connected until death do them part?

The Three Musketeers - Dumas (fanfic+fanart)

d’Artagnan/Jussac

- Then, there’s also Jussac–and their rivalry is set up so well! The longstanding Cardinal’s Guard against the new impulsive Musketeer? Perfection. And then Jussac disappears, and it made me so sad. - So, rival hate!sex? Are they assigned to protect someone and have to arrange themselves with each other? Are they banding together for a greater enemy? - Is one of them blackmailed for their sexuality, and they can only go to the other for help, because nobody is going to believe the gossip they have about the other? I’d prefer if the blackmail doesn’t put emphasis on homophobia, just that the sexual behaviour was not socially acceptable. - They are wooing the same mistress. Because of reasons, they have to hide in her closet together, and the only reasonable recourse of action is banging each other. - Foiling an assassination attempt? getting imprisoned together, because they duelled in public? - I’d also be game for a total AU! But please preserve the general fucked up character dynamics, because they are what I like about this canon.

d’Artagnan/Athos

- d'Artagnan pays so much attention to Athos, and his many swings of temperament, and he has such a crush on him! It’s hard to tell if he wants to be him, or bang him, and I really really want the latter. When Athos says, he has sworn off of women, what he means is that he’s only interested in men, right? right? that is to say, I’d love canon divergence, where they end up together (and please, with the possibility of longterm happiness) - If you want to set this before Milady’s appearance, sure! If you want to set this after Milady’s appearance, I would love to see the dramatic fallout of Milady flirting with d'Artagnan, or hurt/comfort after Athos kills his wife the second time. - Treville makes them root out the Cardinal’s spies out of his ranks! They have to spend a lot of time close together; or Treville makes them go on duty together, because Athos is very experienced, and that’s not the only thing he’s experienced with ;) - d’Artagnan needs help managing the estate the King grants him, and Athos lends a helping hand I like a good helping about catholic guilt, but not just specifically about homosexuality.
