Dancing has always been a passion of yours. For as long as you can remember, you have been dancing. Your parents enrolled you in dance classes at age two, and you have not stopped since. You started competing at age six, and you even won national titles throughout your years.
Despite your major success in dancing, you always tried your best to maintain relationships with your friends. Dancing was your passion, and it was incredibly time-consuming. You ended up moving to Bologna, Italy when you were about 10 years old, and you met your neighbor, Kimi, who happened to be in a similarly demanding sport.
Anytime that he was home for the weekend, you made sure that you did not have a competition. Since you chose which competitions you competed in and he could not choose his karting races, it just made sense to maintain the friendship.
Well, the friendship eventually blossomed into a relationship, and that relationship, ultimately, played a role in you leaving competitions. Kimi’s karting was ramping up rather quickly, and you were happy with where you were at in your dance career and all of the awards you won. You were more than happy to take a step back if that meant others could also succeed. You have also made the step into the professional world. You were modeling for different dancewear companies, being asked to be on Dancing With The Stars, and you had been in a few auditions where you got the role you wanted. Plus, you started mentoring the minis. Your schedule was jampacked, but it’s not like you were ready to leave the dance community entirely. You just stopped competing every weekend. You also wanted to start supporting Kimi during some weekends, and this step back allowed for that.
This week, though, Kimi had an F2 race, or training with Mercedes, you’re not entirely sure. You were too excited because your dance company director said they were hosting a showcase, and you were chosen to have a senior solo. When your dance company director pulled you aside to tell you this, you were ecstatic. You already had the song and some of it choreographed since you hoped to at least compete one last time before you graduated out of your age category.
You could not wait to finish it, so you pulled your friend, Peaches, in to help you choreograph the last few counts.
“What if you did a jump or turn here? Like use the space,” Peaches chuckled as they paused the music. You two were locked up in the main studio since it was roughly the same size as the stage, and all of the other classes had ended for the day.
“For the instrumental part, I could do a giant circle and have pirouettes and chaines and run through the center at the end for the last couple of 8 counts. Like this,” You responded as she rewinded the song to the climax of the song, and let you test out the moves. You ran up to the mirror as the music slowed back down and you paused for a second, staring into your eyes. “Can I have the room? I want to try something, but I don’t know if it will work and the last thing I need is for you to hold this over my head.”
“Yeah, I’ll be in the hall. I’ll go get us waters first,” Peaches laughed, knowing immediately where you were coming from, so you got up and left you to your devices. Unbeknownst to you, not only was the entire dance company standing outside the room, looking through a couple of small windows, but Kimi was also there, watching in admiration. Peaches looked around at everyone as most of the dance company dispersed to look like they were doing something else, but Kimi stood still. He was mesmerized, so Peaches walked to stand beside him, gently bumping into him before whispering, “Is this what we’re doing? Creepily staring at your girlfriend? I’m in.”
“I am not creepily staring at her,” Kimi tsked in defense, but as the silence grew, he started thinking about it. “Okay, maybe I was, but she’s so captivating. I can see why she’s won so many times.”
“At least you’ve got eyes,” Peaches joked with a small laugh, “Anyway, I’m going to get us water. Don’t make it obvious you’re staring.”
Peaches took off down the hall to one of the storage rooms where they stored water bottles while Kimi sat in silence as he watched you move throughout the room. When it came to the part you were previously working on with Peaches, you kept going on for the last 8 counts. This was the part that you wanted to try alone because if it worked, in theory, it would look beautiful, but if it didn’t, it could look sloppy.
You ran up to the mirror before pausing, taking a couple of exaggerated breaths. You slid down to the floor and did a few slow and sharp floor tricks before getting up, and doing one of your signature moves. Then, for the last few beats, you held yourself together with one arm crossed over your chest, holding your shoulder, and the other across your stomach as you swayed as the song faded out.
As soon as it ended, you squealed, running over to where your phone was propped up, recording the entire dance. You rewatched it and immediately knew that this was the dance you wanted to be your senior solo. You ran out of the room to show your company director, but you found Kimi standing in the hall, staring blankly into the studio with tears in his eyes.
“Kimi? Mio amore (My love)?” You said softly as you walked up to stand beside him. “Did you like it?”
That snapped him out of his trance as he turned to you and immediately pulled you into his arms. He hid his face in your neck as a few tears slipped from his eyes as he whispered praises about the dance. When he finally pulled away, he moved his hands to your face as he gave you a passionate kiss. He pulled away but did not let you go as he leaned his forehead against yours.
“Ti amo (I love you),” he whispered as he gazed into your eyes.
“You’ve never said that to me before,” You replied in awe as you looked up at him. “I love you too, but this is the first time you said it.”
“What can I say? Seeing you in your element makes me fall harder for you,” He answered with a joking eye-roll. “You’re beautiful, inside and out, and your dance is perfect. The emotion you show when dancing is insane. How do you do that?”
“Do you want to see the dance with the music?” You offered as you pulled back, running your hands from his sides to hold his hands as you pulled him into the studio when he nodded. “Shoes off, and maybe this will help answer your questions.”
He took his shoes off as he took Peaches’s original seat by the computer, and that’s when he was able to see the song choice. You Are The Reason by Calum Scott. It was a song you referenced a lot when talking about Kimi, and he immediately knew he was the inspiration behind the dance.
“Would you mind playing it from the beginning?” You asked as you finished setting up your phone to record and got into your starting position.
You ran through the dance with more emotion than the last time, thanks to Kimi being in the room this time, and Kimi did not think he could have loved the dance any more than he previously did. Every part of the dance fit with the music, and he could not find it within himself to even blink, not wanting to miss even a millisecond of your performance. By the end, he was overwhelmed with love. He ran up behind you and held you against his chest as he looked at you through the mirror.
“If I were a competition judge, I’d say that was a perfect score,” He praised as he left a kiss on your temple before leaning against your shoulder and swaying with you.

If our love is wrong - jimin and jungkook (jikook - kookmin)" on YouTube
Before you roll your eyes and say "oh another Jikook edit" hear me out. I am sharing it because of the song choice ( and it's a lovely edit).
Callum Scott via Billboard had this to say about the song in 2018
“If Our Love Is Wrong” is, quite simply, my coming out song. As I was trying to wrap my head around my sexuality and was starting to learn about songwriting, and that my honesty and my authenticity came from my personal experiences and writing about stuff that genuinely bugged me or upset me. At the time I was going through a lot of anxiety, I still hadn’t told my dad [I was gay] and the press was asking me about my personal life a lot. At this point I was getting quite anxious and I was panicking thinking that my dad was gonna find out in the wrong way – and I still didn’t feel, at that point, that I was ready to talk about my sexuality.
Also when he was asked why this song was his lead song on the album he replied
It’s positioned that way at the top of the album because, at the end of the day, this is something I’ve lost so much time on. This is how I’ve been feeling for so many years, and as an introduction to my album, you’re going to get a really deep, really personal song, because I need my listeners to know that that’s me, that I’m sensitive, that the album is personal, that I really wanna try and inspire. It’s such a personal message to be confident, because it hurts me to know that other kids might go through what I went through and lose all that time to fear.
Artists will always use their music to say something. So when JK or Jimin recommend songs by queer artists maybe that is their way of saying what they want to say but can't.
It will be interesting to see if their solo work will be enlightening 🏳️‍🌈

please do share unpopular opinions (or just opinions in general) about CALM ty in advance 💕💕🥺
Okay, I'm not sure if my opinions are unpopular but let's go.
We start this off so fucking strong, Red Desert is hands down their best album opener, i love how this has Ashton written all over, the drums in it make me feel like I'm riding a horse while running away through the desert, the harmonies, the buildup, everything about it, amazing. Then we move on to no shame and the "fuck the industry but god i love it here", the lyrics in this paint such an entertainer, I live for the applause thing, buried in some of their cooler melodies to date in my opinion. Old me is the ultimate "everything i did and everything that happened to me made me who i am and i have to live with that whether i like it or not" and i love it so much "had to fuck it up before i really got to know me" that turns into a "had to fuck it up before i let you get to know me" that's life for you right there, some of their most meaningful lyrics. And we get to easier. I have a complicated relationship with studio easier, I think sonically the vault version fits 5sos so much better than the studio version, but I got to admit, current me eats the studio version of this song up, the drums that sound like they're being played with a pipe, the high notes thrown flawlessly all around, the synth layer in the guitar, the vocals, the bass you can feel in your soul, the catch lyrics, honestly, very nice song. Also, again, who told Luke he would never change?? And then we get to teeth, "we're toxic but i love every second of it", the bass alone in this song is enough to drive me feral, but everything around it builds up beautifully, the lyrics, the guitars, the drums, the high notes, great song all around, "late night devil put your hands on me and never never never ever let go", amazing, blew me away from the first time i heard it, i remember saying i wanted that tattooed on me the day it dropped. Then we move on the mandatory song about sex, wildflower. "the song is about abundance" sure Calum, sure. One word for you, HARMONIES. Also love me the mandatory Calum solo song we get every album. It just makes me happy. And now we're done with side A. I feel like this album has a very clear division, and I don't know if its because by the time it came out we had heard the first 6 songs or if its because the division is actually there.
Side B begins with Best Years, look, I think its a cute song, i like the vibes, i like the guitars, but it just doesn't stand out to me, its not bad, its not good, its just there, but i gotta give it to it "I wanna hold your hand while we're growing up" is exactly what I want out of love. Then we move on to not in the same way yet another "we're toxic but I'm loving every second", this song has THE best bridge 5sos has ever written, I don't care, I'm right, also "we fuck and we fight and you call me a psycho", the pre-chorus, chefs kiss, the way it just perfectly describes the being trapped in a cycle, and the way that's exaggerated because the guitar in this is the exact same the whole song, you're just cycling through two notes over and over and over, but we are still getting an insane buildup around the bass and the drums, ugh, talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same. Then we move on the song that made me wonder if I can make a song my whole personality, everything about lover of mine is perfect, the only bad thing about it is that it ends, the piano in the beginning, the acoustic guitar riff all around, the electric guitar riffs sprinkled in, Luke's voice, the harmonies in the back, the way we just have the strings until the drop of the drums for the second verse and the way the drums complement the melody, also, when Calum comes in, I get that he likes his high notes, i get it, but his lower harmonies always drive me crazy, and in this song in particular when he comes in I just lose it, the second pre-chorus and chorus of this are everything to me and then the outro when we get the piano back, ugh, i wish i could listen to this song for the first time again, cuz it changed me as a person.
Then we go to thin white lies, love me a good song that's completely built around the bass, the instrumentation in this song is insane, honestly, the bass, the guitars, the beat, mindblowing, and the lyrics "I don't feel your love and i don't ask too many questions" "these empty sounds and endless stories so tell me what i wanna hear" the way its just "this relationship is slowly killing me but i need to pretend a little longer so keep lying to me". Lonely Heart, this song, the way its just the guitar riff and Luke's voice, and then it just drops for the chorus, the harmonies, the little ohs and ahs in the back, the drums only bridge, that leads to a just one guitar and a high note and the drums kicking in again, ugh, gets me every time, and don't get me started on the lyrics, "I'm bad for you and we both know it, but stay with me anyway," excuse me???????? "Can i have a second chance can i have another dance can i start another life with you" excuse me????????????????? And we go from this to high, like way to kick me when I'm down. The play with words on this song fascinates me. "I think that my heart was built to last more than a night" "I know I'll never meet your expectations, but the picture that you paint of me looks better in your mind" excuse me did they really need to write this???? And the melody is pretty much just the guitar riff and harmonies and that makes such an interesting sound. And it makes the album end in such a contrasting note to red desert, since red desert revolves around the drums, honestly, amazing closer.
And now we get to the bonus song, my little love, kill my time. I strongly believe there are like, 5 different romance movie plots hidden in this song, one of their biggest strikes of genius in storytelling, it just paints a picture, honestly, if I'm really into it llwhen I'm listening, I can see the movie playing in my head, and the 80s pop feel???? AMAZING. The guitars, the synth, the beat, the song not really ending, just fading out, ooof, one of their best songs in my humble opinion, "stained hearts trying to find a home looking for something real" yeah.
Solid album all around, a bit chaotic and not at all cohesive, but it works.

Imagine having fun being out at a party with the boys and Wildflower coming on and you getting so hyped and dancing and singing all of the words to calum and maybe he records it but overall he’s just so happy he found someone so undeniably supportive of him and his boys 😭
i hope you know you inspired me to go out for a drive and blast wildflower, anon, it was truly magical 😊
wildflower - i hear you calling out my name
Calum glanced over at her, a smile on his lips as he saw her in the middle of the crowd. She was singing along to whatever song was playing, her hips swaying along to the music as the people around her joined in. Her hair was falling onto her face, her smile illuminating the room as the lyrics fell from her lips. They'd only been at the party that the band had decided to throw for an hour or so, but the dance floor had been calling her name as soon as they walked into the venue that had been rented out. After she had greeted everyone, she had disappeared from Calum's side and found her way over to the dance floor with a drink in her hand. Not that Calum had minded, he enjoyed watching her dance much more than he enjoyed dancing himself. He loved seeing her get lost in the music, looking as carefree as ever while she spun around to the beat.
The music was loud, thumping through the floor of the venue, the smell of perfume mixing with sweat and alcohol. Calum was leaning against the bar, trying to listen to Ashton talk about the newest single and something about fulfillment and being the best person you could become to some friends. He couldn't hold back the chuckle that fell from his lips when he heard the beginning of Wildflower playing over the speakers, his own voice blasting out through the venue as people around them cheered. The rest of the guys grinned and made their way over to the dance floor to celebrate the success of the song, Calum joining them as he scanned the crowd for her. His eyes landed on hers, the grin on her face matching his as she sang along to the song. She made her way over to him, taking both of his hands in hers as she danced. She was addicting to watch, her hips swaying along to the beat of the song, the way her hands forced Calum to dance along with her. The smile never leaving his face, not even when she let go of his hands and spun around to dance along with everyone else.
When the chorus hit, he couldn't help but laugh as he saw her recreating the tik tok dance that had been going around ever since the song was released. Calum shook his head, his laughs being heard in the video he was recording of her and Michael who were attempting to do the dance, both of them off beat and out of sync with each other. Calum couldn’t help but record them, his heart swelling as he saw how well she got along with his best friends. Her face was flushed, leaning against Michael as she realized that Calum had been recording them, both of them out of breath from trying their best to dance and sing at the top of their lungs.
And watching her, Calum finally understood what Ashton meant when he talked about how he wanted everyone in the band to be fulfilled when they went to bed at night. Standing in the crowd of their release party, he was in awe of her and her love. He knew that being with her, having her support the band in every way she could, being able to show her everything that was him, that's all Calum could wish for himself. He blossomed with her, he felt like he had found a piece of him that he didn't know was missing. She was his wildflower and there wasn't anything better that he could ask for.

Callin’ Out My Name
AN: Thank you to @nowherebound and @wastelandcth for giving me and hyping me up for this. Ily both.
Reminder this is NOT part of the quarantine AU, this is before Cal and Claudia dated :)
Requested: Kinda by Gemma and Candy 💕💕💕
Warnings: smut 😏😏😏 brief awkward Cal and Claudia over cuties that are dumb and don't become official
Word Count: 3.5k words
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Their Target outing wasn’t planned. Calum had seen on Claudia’s snapchat that she was still in town and that she didn’t go to Rosarito with her friends for spring break. So he worked up the courage to ask her what fabric softener she used. A phone call later, consisting mostly of her laughing at how he pronounced ‘Suavitel’, they jokingly agreed to meet in an hour at the Target that’s half way between his house and her place in Long Beach.
Calum smiled to himself seeing her emerge out of her car in his grey Santa Cruz hoodie. He had let her borrow it when they went to Roscoe’s and she got cold. She joked about how it was now hers and that he's never going to get it back. He didn't mind that. For all he cared she could take all his clothes. He also didn't mind that she sent him a few pictures in just his clothes.
Claudia grabbed a shopping cart and followed Calum around. They stopped by the grocery aisle first and filled up on some snacks the guys needed for tomorrow. They were going to reshoot the music video for their song ‘Who Do You Love.’since the editor lost the original video.
The song received mixed reviews. Some people praised The Chainsmokers for working with 5SOS because they’re pretty much an unproblematic group. But people wondered why 5SOS would work with The Chainsmokers since they don’t have the best track record. Even Claudia was surprised the guys worked with them, but she did like the song, especially Calum’s solo.
After getting Michael’s vegan cheese crackers, they went to the cleaning aisle. Calum grabbed some puppy trash bags for Duke. They went a little further down and reached the detergent and fabric softener. Claudia posed like Will Smith showing off Jada in front of the Suavitel.
“Tada!” She said happily.
“You’re such a dork.” Calum teased. He grabbed his phone out of his pocket and snapped a picture of her.
Claudia smiled at him and flipped her hair over her shoulder. She got down to the bottom shelf and dove inside the shelf. The vanilla scented fabric softener was all the way inside the shelf. She used to use the blue one, but recently in the past year it got super waterdown so she just switched to the vanilla one. Her mom uses the yellow one, but she never got the vibe for it.
Calum was answering a message and when he looked down to Claudia, all he saw was her ass. Her leggings were thin around her ass, making her cheeky panties visible through them. He cleared his throat and tried looking away, but he couldn’t. Him and his left hand were going to have fun when he goes to bed tonight.
She set the gallon-sized bottle in the cart. “Where to next?” She asked him.
“Office supplies?”
“Oh my god, yes. I need pens.” She nodded enthusiastically.
She stood on the railing of the bottom basket as Calum pulled the cart. She squealed when he would do a sharp turn, almost knocking her out of the cart.
Calum went to where the journals were while Claudia was getting her pens. When she went back to find him, she saw the good paper she used in stock. She grabbed three packs and followed Calum to the line.
While she waited in line, she realized that she only had a ten dollar bill. She had left her card and other cash in her purse at him.
“I’ll be right back. I’m gonna put these back.” Claudia told Calum.
“Why?” He asked, confused. He saw how her face lit up when she was holding her school supplies.
“I only have ten bucks. The pens themselves cost fifteen.” She explained.
“I can buy them for you.”
“Oh my god, no. I can get them later.”
“It’s fine,” he said, taking her pants and paper. He placed them on the conveyor belt with his groceries.
“Okay let me just venmo you then.” She said, pulling out her phone from her hoodie.
“Claudia, they’re just pens and paper.”
“No, they're the uni-ball 207 Retractable Gel Pen 8-pack and 5-Star college ruled binder paper, Cal.” She explained to him as if that was going to make a difference to him.
“Don’t worry about it.” He said, taking her phone and putting it back in her pocket.
He paid and they were on their way back to their cars. He noticed how she smiled to herself. He placed the things in the back of his car and went back to his side. They both stood awkwardly not wanting their outing to end.
Claudia stood on her tippy toes and kissed Calum. It took him a second to realize what she was doing, but when he did. He deepened the kiss. He pushed her back against her car and held on to her waist. She moaned into his mouth wanting more of him.
A siren blared behind them, making them jump.
“Take it home kids.” the security guard said before rolling away in their gold cart.
Calum and Claudia giggled.
“I’ll see you tomorrow?” Calum asked.
“Yeah, I may or may not have made a chocoflan.” Claudia said, wrapping her arms around him.
“You’re the best, you know that right?”
“I’ve been told.”
She got on her tippy toes once more to kiss him, but this time it was a quick peck. After agreeing that he was going to pick her up at seven, she got in her car and drove home.
It felt weird that she was the only one home. Her housemates had gone back home to see their families. Claudia was going to go to Rosarito with her brother and their friend group, but at the last minute she cancelled. Paco was going to go, and she wanted to avoid drama. She knew that after a few cantaritos she was going to say something that she wouldn’t say if she were sober.
She knew she wasn’t going to miss much. Since they were high school seniors they would go down to Rosarito to party and hang out. One of her friend’s parents owned a beach house so they didn’t worry about going to bars or clubs. They would all just drink there or hang out at the beach.
She was kinda happy to be home. It gave her a chance to hang out with Calum before he left for New York.
She still couldn’t believe he bought her pens and paper. And the good brands at that. She didn’t even use them when she was on campus because she knew if she let someone borrow her pens, she’s not going to get them back. So she always carries the BIC ones in her backpack.
When she got to her room she took off his hoodie and her bralette. She opened up the pen back and sat on her desk chair. She fixed the lighting around her desk, making sure it got her good side. She pulled out her phone and angled herself so Calum got a good shot of her breasts. She used one of the pens to hide her nipple, since the other was covered by her hair. She took a few with other pens and sent them to him, thanking him for the pens and paper.
She threw her phone and herself into her bed and squealed into her pillow. She knew she was being bold, but she didn’t care. She was just giving him a taste of what he'd be getting if they were an official couple.
Claudia propped herself against her pillows and let her mind wonder. She played with her breasts a little, squeezing them, gently pulling her nipples. After she teased herself a bit, her hands wandered down her body until they reached her panties. She slipped them off and rubbed herself.
She imagined Calum was the one touching her. Her mind went back to Valentine’s Day when Calum spent the night. Her fingers imitated the way Calum took her. It felt good, but her fingers couldn’t compare to his.
She immediately moaned out for him as she got closer to climax. She pulled her fingers out and reached for her vibrator. She set it to the lowest setting and slid her fingers inside once more. She whimpered and cried his name when she came. She increased the speed and rubbed it all over her. her moans and whimpers got louder.
Once her high faded, she turned off her vibrator and went to sleep.
***
Calum's leg bounced and the tea he drank was not calming him down. He was in the middle of getting himself off when he got Claudia's messages and accidental phone call. The only thing on his mind were her moans and whimpers. That was a lie, he ended up writing a few lines for a song that has been in his mind. So along with her moans and whimpers, the words 'I hear you callin' out my name, I love the sound, I love the taste,' were stuck in his head.
Nonetheless, he couldn't look her in the eye when he picked her up. Nor engage in the small talk. It also didn't help that she wore a sundress with a slit, giving him a good view of her new tattoo. Well he couldn't really decipher it, but he knew she got a new tattoo. The few times he was lucky enough to be in between her thighs, he never saw a tattoo in that area.
"Is this for me?" She asked, breaking the silence. She pointed at the matcha latte he had also bought.
"Yeah,"  he nodded.
"Thanks." she smiled at him.
Claudia took the drink and sipped it. She sighed and pulled out her phone. She played Tetris, annoyed with Calum. She didn't get it. Yesterday was great and now he was avoiding her. He didn't even mention her pictures. It made her feel slightly embarrassed. Did she cross the line? Did she seem desperate to him? Was she doing too much? Those were questions she needed to be answered, or she was going to go into a downward spiral where she would end up embarrassing herself.
Calum parked next to Michael's car and got out. He opened the back and grabbed the bags from yesterday. Claudia followed him with a box of White Claws. Everyone shared a look seeing the couple that's not a couple but is a couple showing up together. More because they didn't know Calum was bringing Claudia.
KayKay pulled Claudia into a hug and guided her to the couch. They made small talk while the guys got ready.
Claudia watched as the makeup artist flirted with Calum. She felt slightly uncomfortable so she walked out to the bathroom.
Calum followed her through the mirror and frowned.
"I'm gonna need you to take off your shirt so I can get your neck and chest." the make-up artist told him.
He knew that tone and it took everything in him not to roll his eyes. One thing he hated was when people acted unprofessional. It's like they all thought that all bands hooked up with everyone with legs.
He huffed and took off his t-shirt.
"Fuck, Claudia got you good." KayKay teased.
Calum flipped her off, making her laugh. He knew she wasn't wrong. Their little makeout session last night got hot and heavy. He did even notice until he woke up. Luckily with seeing all of his hickies, the makeup artist stopped their flirting and did their job.
Calum got out to use the bathroom. Outside the bathroom he heard Alex and Drew talking.
"If she showed up with him then maybe they are a thing." Alex reasoned.
"I asked Luke and he said they're not dating." Drew argued back.
"But they can still be a thing."
"Whatever."
Calum heard their steps fade away. He got out of the stall and washed his hands. He went back to the dressing room and frowned when he found Drew talking to Claudia. He walked over to them and pushed himself in between them.
"Hi," Claudia smiled at him. She pushed herself onto him and intertwined their fingers together. "Can we go to your car? I think I left my portable charger there."
"Yeah." He nodded.
He patted Drew's shoulder as they walked past him. He whispered into Ashton's ear that they'll be back in time for him to record. It earned them a chuckle and condom from Ashton.
Calum watched Claudia climb in the backseat, making him confused. She didn't put anything in the backseat. So he followed suit.
"Thanks for butting in back there." Claudia said quietly.
"You're welcome. I overheard him and Alex talk while I was taking a piss. I had to."
"You'd think he'd remember his ex's little cousin."
"What?"
"Yeah. He briefly dated my cousin Vanessa back in 2016. She was going to be in the Closer music video and everything. But she dumped him."
"Shit."
"I know. It's also one of the reasons why I don't like them." She giggled.
Claudia felt Calum's eyes on her so she not so subtly stretched her legs, showing off her tattoo and the lack of panties.
"When did you get your tattoo?" He asked.
"Oh, this?" She answered, feigning innocence. She opened the slit more and jutted her hips to him, so she basically straddled his leg. "A few days after Valentine's Day."
"May I?"
"Go for it."
Calum traced her tattoo with his index finger. It was a simple tattoo of the sun and moon with arrows and stars vertically aligned. But on her it was breathtaking.
Claudia sat on his thigh and wrapped her arms around him. She pulled him into a kiss. They kissed slowly as if Calum wasn't supposed to be out on set in twenty minutes. She pushed him back into the door and motioned him to take off his shirt.
Calum hesitated. This not where he wanted them to have sex for the first time. It was going to be her first time and he didn't want her to think back to this time and cringe.
"We're not having sex." He said, gently pushing her away.
"Okay." Claudia scoffed.
She laughed nervously. She adjusted the strap of her dress. She climbed off his lap, frustrated. She felt rejected. She wasn't planning on having sex with him and the fact that he thought of it and pushed her away, made her feel embarrassed.
"I'm going back to the dressing room." she said. She got out of the car and slammed the door shut.
"Wait, Claudia." Calum called after her, but the director called him and the rest.
He just hoped that he didn't fuck up his chance with her.
***
"We're going." Ashton yelled to Calum.
After filming the music video, the guys, KayKay and Claudia all went back to Calum's house for a barbecue. Calum knew he fucked up when Claudia asked Ashton to ride with him while she went with KayKay. The whole time they avoided each other until now where it was just the two of them and Duke.
When Calum came back he found Claudia in the kitchen washing dishes.
"I can wash them." He said getting her attention.
"It's fine, I just have a few left." She said, not turning back to him.
Calum grabbed a towel and dried the dishes. Five minutes later they finished.
"I'm going to order an Uber." She said softly.
"I can give you a ride home."
"Why did you say that we weren't going to have sex?" She asked him, ignoring his offer. "I felt so humiliated."
"I didn't want your first time in the back seat of my car."
"Well it's not your place to decide. It's mine. For the record I was just gonna give you a blowjob." Claudia stomped away to the living room to get her portable charger.
Calum followed her, frowning. "I kinda have a say where I have sex too. You're not fucking yourself. Well last night you were, but in the car—"
"How did you know what I was doing last night?"
"You buttdailed me."
"Oh god,"
Claudia squatted down, embarrassed, and covered her face. She cried. She couldn't do anything right with Calum. For once she wants her almost sex encounters with him not end with her crying. He sat down next to her and wrapped his arm around her. She buried her face into his chest as she cried.
"If it makes you feel better, it was pretty hot. Especially after seeing those pictures." he said, not sure how to stop her from crying.
Claudia stopped crying. She pulled away and looked at him. "Really?"
"Honest. That's why I was so nervous when I picked you up."
"That's nice to hear." She said quietly, earning a chuckle from him.
Calum laid down and pulled Claudia next to him. They laid together in silence, enjoying each other's presence. She wedged her leg between his and draped her arm over his tummy. He gently rubbed her thigh, slowly inching his hand to where she wanted him. He slid his hand back to her knee. He did it once more, but this time she pushed his hand higher up.
"Please," Claudia begged. She opened up legs, giving him enough room to do what he wanted.
Calum picked her up and carried her to the couch. He sat down and pulled her to his lap. He spread their legs so his hand could have better access to her. He groaned, feeling how ready she was for him.
"Forgot you weren't wearing panties." he said.
"I was going to wear a lace teddy, but this dress was backless." she explained.
"I'm not complaining."
Calum kissed her shoulder, pushing down the thin straps down her shoulders. He did the same to the other and toyed with her breasts through her dress. His pants tightened, hearing her moan. He continued touching her, making her whine whenever he briefly touched her core.
"All day, I thought about slipping my fingers in you whilst you sat on my lap." Calum whispered. His hand once more made its way up to her core. "No one would notice my fingers—"
Claudia gasped feeling his ring and middle finger inside of her.
"Inside of you."
She clung to the blue and gold sleeve of his jacket. After they filmed the music video, they left in their clothes. Claudia didn't mind. To her he looked like a prince.
Calum pressed his thumb to her clit and sped up his fingers. Claudia whined and placed her head on his shoulder. But he gently held her up by her neck.
"Eyes on me, pretty girl." He said.
“Shit—Calum!” She whimpered.
She gripped his hand as she came. Once her high faded, Calum let go and let her lean into him. He slipped his fingers out of her and licked them clean, moaning at how delicious she tasted.
After a few minutes, Claudia got off his lap and got down on the floor to her knees. She took advantage that Calum was spread out and situated herself in between his legs. She tied her hair into a bun and leaned forward. She tugged his shirt, so he could take a hint.
He shedded off his jacket and shirt. "You don't have to do this, you know."
"I know."
Claudia pushed down the top part of her dress, exposing her breasts to him. She leaned forward and tugged his belt open. She popped the buttons of his pants, pulling them down along with his boxers. She licked her hand before slowly jerking him off. She kissed his tip and slipped him as far she could take him.
Her eyes never left Calum’s as she took him deeper in her mouth. He cursed loudly, encouraging her to keep going. His stomach began to contract, letting Claudia know that he was close. Slowly, she pulled him out of her mouth until only his tip rested on her tongue. She widened her eyes, making her look more innocent as she stroked him. She took him back in her mouth, bobbing her head, just as he began to come. When finished, she sat back on her knees and closed her eyes. She felt Calum’s hand on her cheek. His thumb slowly ran over her bottom lip.
"You know, you're the only one who makes me cum. Especially when you use that ungodly mouth of yours." He panted.
His eyes widened, he had come to a realization. He pulled up his pants and quickly went to his piano. He opened his journal and jotted down 'you're the only one who makes me, every time we' on the page where he wrote a few lines yesterday. At the top of the page he wrote 'WILDFLOWER' in capital letters and underlined the word three times as a way for him to remember that's the title.
He looked back at Claudia and found her sleeping covered in his jacket. He smiled to himself. People find their muses, but he found his wildflower.

Mornings with you - Calum Hood
Request: no Pairing:  Calum Hood x reader Summary:  You’re tired of having to hide your love for Calum whenever there’s a camera around. Warnings: none Word count:  1.4K A/N: did I make a playlist with 5sos songs that include my favourite solos by calum? yes I did and I do not regret it. enjoy reading! :)
Waking up next to Calum is the best feeling in the world. It beats coming home after months of touring, it beats being on stage, it beats everything. Waking up next to him makes you feel safe, and you forget about your chaotic life for an hour or two.
With both you and Calum having a busy life that involves touring, music promo, and writing songs, it could be hard to find relaxation. Even if you were both home, and not hopping from city to city, the superstar life didn’t end.
Which is why you never take waking up next to him for granted. You’ve come a long way, and you’re so glad you and Calum found each other. You truly didn’t know what you’d do without him.
You’re currently laying in the king sized bed of the Calum’s place. It’s a nice house in a quiet neighbourhood in LA. It’s not too big, and cozy but not too small. It’s exactly right. And his bandmates are just a few minutes away.
Calum is not next to you. He woke up an hour ago, pressed kisses to your cheek and mumbled he’d take Duke on a walk, and that he’d be back to cuddle up next to you. After all, it’s Sunday. And Sunday is your cheat day. You can stay in bed for just a little longer than usual.
You’re drifting off to sleep every now and then, waking up due to not being fully asleep. You’re merely waiting for Calum to come home. After months of being together, morning cuddles are still your favourite activity.
When you live on a screen, everyone’s always up in your business. It’s one of the reasons you prefer to put your phone away and always try to live in the moment. It’s also the reason why you and Calum decided to keep your relationship a secret for as long as you could.
You didn’t need all the drama people would start. You didn’t need all the celebrity news platforms writing countless of articles about you while they didn’t even know you, or Calum. And you certainly didn’t need everyone to know everything about your private life.
So far, you’ve managed to keep your love for Calum away from the flashing camera’s and screaming fans, and it’s nice. It’s nice to be able to just be yourself within the walls of Calum’s place, your place, or one of your friends’ houses.
Of course, your friends and family knew about you and Calum. You wanted to keep it all a secret from the media, but not from the people that mean the most to you. The privacy you have feels good, and it makes you feel like you’ve got things under control. You decide what the world gets to know and what not.
It can also be suffocating. Every time you go outside, you’ve got to make sure no one can trace you back to Calum, and vice versa. Every single time you go out for grocery shopping or to have lunch with a friend, you’ve got to check all the details. Not wearing any piece of clothing that’s Calum’s, no pda when the two of you are outside together, and many more.
The sound of a door opening in the distance followed by the sound of Duke’s paws on the floor indicates Calum’s back from his walk. And indeed, a few moments later Calum enters the bedroom and smiles when he sees you. He takes off his shoes and because he didn’t change out of his sweatpants and shirt he slept in, he immediately crawls into the bed next to you.
You shiver a bit when his cold hands wrap around your waist to pull your body against his. Calum nuzzles his face in your neck and presses kisses against the soft skin. The two of you lay in silence for a while, enjoying each other’s company.
‘I love waking up next to you.’ you say softly, your voice barely audible. You feel Calum’s lips against your skin as he smiles at your words. ‘It’s a good thing I love it as well.’ he says, kissing your neck again.
You move so you can wrap your arms around Calum. You’re mindlessly scratching the back of his neck while thinking about your relationship. Ever since finding Calum, your mental health has improved a lot, and you’re happier than you’ve ever been. The only downside to it is the secrecy, and not being able to do all the little things. Holding his hand while walking the street, going on tour with him as his girlfriend and not just the support act.
‘Cal?’ you say and he hums in response. ‘Do you think we should go public?’ Calum removes his face from your neck, leans his elbow on the pillow and his head on the palm of his hand so he can look at you.
‘What makes you say that?’ he asks you.  ‘Well, to be honest I’m getting a bit tired of all the secrecy and sneaking around. I know why we chose to keep it private, but we can still keep a lot of our relationship to ourselves should we go public. They don’t have to know everything. I would just like to be able to join you when you go for a walk with Duke and hold your hand. I don’t want to stop myself when I go out so I can check if I’m wearing one of your shirts.’ you tell him.
Calum nods as he’s listening to you. ‘I get it.’ he says. ‘I know the feeling. We both know what could happen if we go public. All the made up stories, drama, and all that stuff. But it’s been months and I’m getting a bit tired of it as well.’ he says.
‘It’s just.’ you start but you stop as you’re trying to find the right words. You reach out and cup Calum’s cheek with one of your hands. ‘I love you, Calum, with my entire heart. And I love being with you, it makes me feel safe and I feel at home whenever I’m with you.’ you start to ramble but Calum doesn’t stop you, so you carry on.
‘Mornings with you are my favourite. I love being backstage when I’m on tour with you and the guys, and it’s just them and their girlfriends and we don’t have to worry about any camera’s or people that might tell the media about us. We can just be ourselves without limitations. And I love you so much and I just want to spend the rest of my life with you and I can’t do that when we can’t let the world know we love each other.’ you say.
When you look at Calum again, he’s got the softest look ever on his face. He’s smiling like an idiot and reaches out to pull you closer. He’s not saying anything, though.
‘What?’ you say, already starting to panic a bit. ‘Something I said? What did I do?’ Calum puts his hand on the back of your neck and pulls you in for a kiss. When he pulls away, he’s still smiling like an idiot.  ‘You said you want to spend the rest of your life with me.’ he says.
‘Oh.’ you say. ‘Well, it’s true. I love you. I don’t want to be with anyone else ever again.’
‘Then let’s do it.’ says Calum. ‘Let’s go public. We don’t have to make a whole big thing out of it. We just don’t take all of those precautions. You can go out wearing my shirt, we can walk hand in hand. And if someone addresses it, we can confirm it, but we don’t have to go into detail. We’ll just tell them we’ve been together for months, and that we’d like to keep our relationship as private as possible.’
This time, you lean in to kiss him. ‘That sounds good.’ you say when you pull away. Calum smiles and pulls your body against his again. You sigh approvingly as you curl up to his side.
You couldn’t wait for you and Calum to finally be yourselves outside the comfort of the privacy of your homes. People would finally know how much you love him. You could wake up next to him for many more mornings.
A/N: If you want to request something, make sure to read my house rules Here’s the list of characters I write for. Everything that I have written can be found on my masterlist. Please don’t repost my work, as I spend much time and effort on it!! Thank you for reading! Much love, Jo

Thank you, Ashton. Thank you for everything.
5SOS and 5SOSfam: I wouldn’t have survived the year without you and without this community. Yes, it was a hard year to become a fan. But I’m so glad I did and that I went through all of that, it just showed me how powerful the power of music is and how strong as a community we can be. We survived the year despite all of it and we’ll keep on doing that for years to come. Thank you for the music that guided me through it all. Thank you for showing me who I want to be. Thank you for giving us the world. Thank you for everything you’ve done. Thank you for each album. For each video and bts. For each silly moment. For each keek. Thank you for each prank. What’s the most exciting thing about 5sos5 to you? Mines getting to witness a full music era with them cause i came in at the very end of calm
First off, welcome!!! 5sos is such an awesome band to be a fan of, their love for the art of making music and their love and respect for their fans is a real gift to be apart of. You can tell they absolutely cherish the every single opportunity they achieve to be doing what they're doing. They love being in this band, and that joy and love really shows in their art. I found them in 2014 and they've been my favorite band for almost 8 years now. My taste in music has evolved with them, and I feel like they've been with me through all of the big parts of my life, and I feel a huge connection with them and their work. Also, if you can, get tickets to see them live... it's unreal. They are a band that you absolutely must see live if possible.
As for what I'm most excited about... is it lame to say content? Live shows again? Literally just... new music? I don't really engage much with fandom space for real people (it's not my thing, to each their own!) so my engagement with them is very much limited to their work and whatever content they share with us. I love watching live performances they do and seeing how they've grown as musicians, that's always exciting. If you haven't watched them at Global Citizens Live, I'd absolutely recommend it. Like, they've always been fantastic live but you can tell they've put in some WORK in the last two years and holy crap they sound amazing. Same with the live performances on on The 5SOS Show, INSANE. Teeth acoustic? Literally shut up I'll never be over it.
But my favorite thing is getting to hear them actually talk about their work! I love real interviews, where they're asked about their process, about the way the new music came together, their inspirations for their new music and how it sounds. I LOVE listening to them talk about music and how they go about creating it. Its SO interesting, and they're so incredibly smart and full of insane knowledge about music, its amazing. You can really tell that they love it and they do it because the love making music, which just makes any listening experience that much better.
A really great interview I heard a little while ago was this episode of Switched on Pop. Luke and Calum talk about Tame Impala, and then they talk about Wildflower, and its just like half an hour of them pulling out the craziest references and talking about how a Wildflower came together. Wildflower is my fave song off CALM, and it was so interesting to learn about it in a more in depth way! I had a blast listening!
Some other great ones are the Zach Sang interviews! They've done four (i think?) for Want You Back, Easier, Teeth, and they did one with the Chainsmokers for Who Do You Love. Awesome interviews!! Zach Sang is an incredible interviewer honestly, he is so respectful, and he asks them real questions about their work that give them a ton of space to really share, it's fantastic! But there are tons more great interviews, especially from like 2018 on!
I also LOVED their 5sos Talks 10 Years podcast, where they talked about the 10 years they've spent as a band. They talked about how they got where they are, their achievements and the difficulties they faced, and they talk about what it means to them to get to be in this band, with each other. It's really incredible to get even a small sense of how they see their journey as 5SOS, and as individuals. If you haven't watched, you absolutely must, its amazing.
Lately, I've also really enjoyed watching Steven In Stereo and Beveraggi on YouTube do reactions to 5sos stuff. They both came into it with absolutely no knowledge of the band and now they both LOVE them. You get to see their journey through all their music, they've done their full discography, plus Luke and Ashton's solo projects. It's really cool to see someone fall in love with something you love, especially because a lot of people have a preconceived idea of what 5sos are going to be and people are almost always surprised, in a good way. I also have a hearing disability, so I don't always catch little nuances in music when I listen to it on my own, so I love hearing musical people talk about their music, I've discovered so much more about their songs this way!
But yeah, that is definitely what I'm most excited for. I love hearing their new music, obviously, and I love new music videos and all that, but I'm always most excited to hear them talk about how their new music. What their process was like to get where they are, where the inspiration for the new stuff comes from, where they see their music going and how it fits into the greater pop space they find themselves in, and all that. They're incredible musicians, and they really know their stuff, and hearing them talk about their process and where their music came from makes the experience of listening to their work even that much more special, for me at least, because it helps me see their work in a different way.
That, and also... is Calum gonna keep wearing skirts? Cause oh my god, I'm so into that. Skirts and a mullet, this era will truly be the death of me.

Stuck | Michael Clifford
Summary: The boys try to do something special for the reader’s birthday while on tour but it might take a quick turn into something more.
Warnings: No just the friends to lovers prompt and rusher!reader because I love BTR (me? including Big Time Rush in yet another one of my works? I bet no one saw it coming).
Requested: No
Word Count: Around 1500
A/N: IT’S MY BIRTHDAY TODAY! so this kind of a request I did for myself, the original idea for this was to write 5sos x platonic!reader but it became friends to lovers with Michael. The BTR songs I mention can be found here, here, here, here and here
MASTERLIST HERE
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY” four voices exclaimed waking you up in a quite abruptly way making you forget you were in a bunk in a tour bus hitting yourself with the bunk above yours.
“Ouch sorry” Ashton said “anyways happy birthday to the best tour mom ever”
“Yeah and don’t tell my mom Ash said that” Luke chirped in making you smile.
Even though every time your four best friends had to go on tour begged you to come with them sometimes it just wasn’t possible for you but this time you managed to make time for this tour and whenever it was possible for you to join them you looked after them, stopping them from getting too drunk after a show in case they had to do interviews or something important the next morning or making sure their show outfits were ready before or during soundcheck. You loved and cared for them and they loved and cared for you it was the most beautiful friendship you could ever have.
“Thanks guys” you smiled again with a sleepy voice “how come you woke up before I did?”
“Well we wanted to do something special and surprise you” Michael explained “we can stop near a bakery and buy you a proper cake but for now you’ll have to settle for the last package of Oreo we have”
Calum handed you the package it had a piece of paper pasted to the envelope it said “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” with markers of different colors and their signatures it was the sweetest thing they could’ve done for you.
“You don’t have to buy me anything seriously this is enough” you replied opening the package.
“But we want to” Michael spoke again “You do so much for us”
For a second you lost yourself in his eyes, you had fallen for one of your best friends and after months of denial, thinking it was a stupid crush and it would fade, two weeks ago you finally admitted that you had fallen for him and how could you not? He was sweet and dorky and everything you’ve ever wanted.
“Uh you know what I’m going to get ready for today” you put your Oreos on your bunk “you can eat some if you want”
You left them and went to the back of the bus you closed the door the sound of Big Time Rush began to come from where you were now. Michael smiled of course you were listening to BTR when getting ready he thought it was sweet.
“I think the best birthday present you could give to her is telling her how you feel” Ashton suggested taking a cookie and putting it in his mouth.
“I-what?” Michael gasped “how do you guys know?”
“Mate you’re not very good at hiding your feelings we all noticed” Calum chuckled “don’t worry she’s just as oblivious as you are”
“Can you guys speak lower?” Michael whispered “I can’t have her hearing this”
“She has Big Time Rush sounding as loud as possible from the bluetooth speakers” Ashton laughed “she must be too busy enjoying herself dancing like crazy right now. She’s not going to listen to any of this”
Michael nodded he had a point the song playing was If I Ruled The World and it was your favorite BTR song and by now they had it memorized too “Do you really think I should do something about it?”
“Yep” Luke quickly answered “I can’t stand another conversation with her and about you”
“She told you?” Michael questioned again eyes wide open.
“Dude you know we are close” Luke shrugged “remember that I introduce you guys to her. Of course, she told me!”
Luke was the only one who knew about your crush on him you begged him not to tell the other boys but of course they found out by themselves and nobody had to tell them everybody around you knew but Michael. Maybe they were right it was time to do something about it.
“I’ve been thinking about this for quite a while now” Michael said “maybe we could add a song to the setlist tonight just for her birthday”
They didn’t allow you in the soundcheck which was weird they always wanted you there to be their number one during every rehearsal you immediately brushed it off “Maybe they are planning something silly for my birthday” you thought and kept playing with your phone and listening to music in the tour bus.
By the time of the concert the boys surprised with a cake singing happy birthday to you as funny and as out of tune as they possibly could making you laugh and smile.
“We told you we’d get you a proper cake” Michael smiled “now blow your candles and make a wish”
“Thank you, guys, so much” you said before blowing the candles.
“What did you wish for?” Michael asked.
“Not telling” you smirked “not going to come true if I tell”
“Well let’s eat some cake we have to get to the stage in around half an hour” Luke said.
After your small, improvised party the guys rushed to the stage you of course stood by the side of the stage watching your best friends having the time of their life.
“Cause I’m really not fine at all” they finished amnesia it was followed by the deafening sound of the fans screaming.
“Hey guys” Michael spoke “so tonight it’s a pretty special night because Y/N’s here and it’s her birthday today” and the fans screamed even more. They loved you and even considered you the fifth member of the band because of how pretty your friendship with the boys was.
“She’s a big fan of a band called Big Time Rush and she’s been begging us to do a BTR cover for a long time now” you rolled your eyes at Mike’s comment you weren’t begging you just told them it’d be pretty cool if they did just one song “and since today’s her birthday we are going to surprise her by finally singing one of their songs”
That’s why you weren’t allowed in the soundcheck “Put your lights in the air and please sing this if you know it this is Stuck”
“But I just keep getting…” Mike sang looking at you.
“Stuck, stuck” the boys joined him with harmonies his eyes never leaving yours.
“But I’m never giving…” Michael face went back to the crowd this was the first time in the whole song that he took his eyes off you.
“Up, up” the boys joined him again for the last part of the song “Thank you guys!”
Again, the fans were screaming a lot of them may not know the song, but the song was basically a Michael solo with beautiful harmonies, and it was something they couldn’t experience live every day.
“The next song it’s from our new album CALM” Luke said to the microphone as Michael changed guitars and the iconic sound of Easier filled up the place.
“Can’t sleep?” You asked Michael he was sitting on one of the sofas at the back of the tour bus.
“What are you doing up?” he questioned.
“I can’t sleep either” you sat next to him “great show tonight by the way I really enjoyed the cover section today…thank you”
“Well the four of us wanted to do something special for you…”
“I knew it was your idea” you interrupted him “I could tell it was your idea. It just screamed Michael to me”
“Yes, it was my idea” he said smiling at you “it was nothing I know how much you love those guys I just had to do it and I know someday they’ll get back together and we will collab with them and you can finally meet them then”
“What choice of song” you changed the subject “when I ‘begged’ you to cover a song I told you guys would do a great version of Shot In The Dark or Til’ I Forget About You not Stuck”
“I know that Stuck is one of your favorite songs and I know that you think it’s underrated because a big part of the fandom only recognize Boyfriend as a love song” he explained finally looking at you, you could’ve sworn you saw his eyes shine in the darkness “I know because I listen to you complain about it and this song had a message I really wanted to give to you that’s why I chose it”
“Michael, do you really feel that way about me?” you asked looking down.
“Yeah I do for quite a while now” he answered with a breathless laugh “and I-I think you feel the same?”
“Did Luke tell you?”
“No, he didn’t” he said “actually Ashton told me to do something about it”
“Ashton knows!?” you screamed whispered.
“Apparently everyone knows” he chuckled “but us”
You thought you had been careful and not too obvious about it and of course Luke hadn’t told, you could trust him with your life.
“Can I kiss you?” Michael questioned after a moment of silence.
You just nodded and when his lips touched yours it felt like a thousands fireworks in your stomach it was magical, it was perfect and even though you birthday ended about 3 hours ago it was the best present ever.
“Sorry it took so long” Michael breathlessly said once you pulled apart.
“It was worth it” you smiled leaning to kiss him again.
Guess your wish came true

“Y/N!”
Jojo’s voice echoed through the room, all eyes turning to you as the choreographer lifted a finger and gestured for you to come over.
Once you were close enough, the winning smile on Jojo’s face was full of mischief. “You got this choreo down?” When you nodded she started to move, scooting past you towards the phone connected to the speaker system. “Then it’s your turn. Solo.”
You chuckled, getting into the starting position as Tim’s camera focused on you. A hush fell over the room as the air settled, giving Jojo a nod right before the music started.
And suddenly, you were transformed, the movements you had been practicing all day coming to life as the music swirled around you. You weren’t in LA anymore; you weren’t even sure if you were yourself. All you knew was the tempo and dynamics of the lyrics, the emotions of the song becoming your own as a story was told with each movement.
From a young age, it had been clear to your family that you were passionate about dancing. After expressing your disinterest in sports and academics, your parents were dumbstruck; they had genuinely thought you would like at least one of those things, considering your mother was the brains and your father was the stay-at-home-brauns. However, after one particular year of taking you to see a ballet, they quickly noticed the shine in your eyes as the dancers floated across the stage, beaming grins on their faces as they signed you up for dance classes the very next day.
Over the years, you learned everything you could from different genres of dance, your body becoming fluent in the languages as you grew up. You walked in eight counts, elegance trailing just behind you everywhere you went as you moved. It took everything within you to not dance down the hallways at school, practicing whatever routine was giving you a hard time as you went from class to class.
After graduating high school, your family moved to LA for better work opportunities; you quickly found a community of dancers you loved and fell in with them, moving into a house with some of them and attending all the workshops they did. When they all started getting big name jobs it didn’t bother you, instead pushing you forward until you were just as talented as they were.
Now, you were well known with the community. Choreographers like Jojo Gomez and Kyle Hanagami sought you out for their workshops, sometimes even asking you to learn choreo ahead of time to demonstrate to everyone at the shops. Tim Milligram quickly became a friend of yours as well, as he was almost always at the workshops, sparkling lenses capturing everything before he posted the edited videos on YouTube.
Where you were now was where you had dreamed of being as a child. It wasn’t worldwide fame like some people wanted, but it was more than enough for you. To some, you were a nobody, but to the ones that mattered, you were equivalent to the Queen of England, and that was everything for you.
As you finished the routine applause broke out around you, your friends all throwing hair ties and shoes at you to celebrate how well you had done. As you came down from the performance high, Jojo almost tackled you in a tight hug, laughter escaping both of you as you caught yourself before you stumbled back.
“Jesus,” Jojo breathed, pulling back and cupping your face in her hands. “How have you not started teaching these things yourself?”
You beamed, Jojo’s arm moving around your shoulder as she guided you away. She called the next dancer up and grabbed her phone again as you sat down with your friends, eyes trained on the dancer as you took in every move.
At the end of the workshop you gathered up all your things and walked out with your friends, the nearest diner calling your names as you all laughed and joked around. Your usual routine for this eventually brought you all back to your home, each of you taking turns showering and settling in for the rest of the night.

The tour bus bumped over another pothole, the uneven cement rattling Calum awake for the upteenth time that evening. He sighed and dragged his hand down his face, officially giving up on any amount of sleep as he turned to his back.
His hand landed on his phone and lifted it to his face.
1:47 a.m.
He held in a groan as he grabbed his AirPods, slipping them into his ears and drowning out the sounds of the bus as it moved. He left his phone plugged in and opened his YouTube app, hoping that maybe some of the channels he was subscribed to had uploaded new videos he could binge until they reached their destination. However, in his sleepy state, he tapped the wrong video, a beat starting over his headphones as his brow furrowed in confusion.
Calum was about to exit the video when he saw the dancers, eyes captivated by their movements as the first group faded in. His mouth dropped open at some of the talent he was seeing, eyes locked on one dancer in particular during a solo performance.
It was obvious to Calum this dancer had invested in the music, the way they moved bringing emotions out of the man as he focused intently on their body. Now invested in watching more of these videos, he let this one play out, letting YouTube autoplay to the next one as he kept his phone close to his face.
Hours passed with Calum trying to find more videos with this dancer in it, finally finding one that he watched a second time. This time, they were in heels, the sweet sounds of Niall Horan’s Slow Hands playing against his eardrums as they moved so elegantly.
Lucky for him, his video finally had the Instagram handle for this dancer he was now obsessed with, the man immediately switching apps and bringing up their profile.
They were genuinely stunning in the photos they would post, his thumbs slowly scrolling through most of the photos on their profile before he finally gave them a follow. He knew some fans would see that and make assumptions, but he didn’t care; he wanted to see more of this person and their talents, wanted to consume all forms of media they were on just to see them move.
“Calum.”
The man jumped at the sound of Luke’s voice, pulling out an AirPod as he tugged the curtain to his bunk aside. The tall blonde was leaning over and yawning, running a hand through his hair.
“We’re stopping, mate,” he said, Calum now hearing the sounds of Michael and Ashton shifting in their beds. “Need anything, better get it now.”
Cal nodded, climbing out of his bunk and giving a big stretch before pulling on some sweatpants. He climbed out of the bus and found Michael waiting for him, the usual routine whenever they made a stop.
“Hey, Mike,” Cal said, nudging his best friend as he unlocked his phone and showed him the Instagram page he still had open.
His best friend took his phone and raised an eyebrow as he scrolled down the page, opening some of the photos and giving them a look before he handed the device back. “They’re cute. You followed them?”
Calum nodded as Michael grinned, giving him a nudge with his elbow. “Trying to make a move, pal? Get yourself a little someone?”
Calum chuckled, shaking his head as he nudged Michael back. “I don’t think so, Mike, just think they’re talented. Wanna keep up with that.”
Michael nodded and wiggled his eyebrows, making Calum shove him playfully as he broke into a laugh.
“What’s goin’ on up there?” Ashton called from behind them as Luke trailed behind him. Michael turned around, walking backwards as he spoke.
“Cal’s got a crush on a dancer!” he yelled back, making Calum groan.
“It’s not a crush!”
“Whatever you say, mate!”
***
“Jade,” you called, your phone shifting slightly in its place. “What do you want for dinner?”
Your Instagram live audience immediately started to chime in with suggestions as you picked up your phone, holding it out in front of you as you read the suggestions.
Your best friend came out of her room and followed you, half of her now in view of the audience as you moved into the kitchen. “Someone’s suggested we order out instead of making something, but where’s the fun in that?”
Jade chuckled as she started rummaging through the cabinets, taking in everything they had before she turned around and looked at you. “That might be a good idea,” she said, gesturing to the nearly empty cabinets.
“Oh shit,” you sighed, putting a hand on your hip. “You’re right. Take out it is!”
Jade chuckled as she picked up her phone, already dialing your favorite place and putting in an order for the two of you as you made faces at your audience.
It was a quiet night and you had been bored, the Instagram live feature staring you in the eyes as you finally decided to just do it. You had taken the time beforehand to look cute but comfy, hoping the cute man that had followed you a few months ago now would join.
The notification had confused you. You weren’t sure who Calum Hood was at first, noticing the blue check next to his name as you did your investigation into his Instagram profile. After a quick Google search, however, you quickly learned everything you needed to know about him; his band had written one of your favorite dance songs and a few others you had put on your driving playlist that you vibed with the most.
So, that mixed with how attractive you found him to be, you obviously had to follow him back.
He didn’t post much and you were fine with that, always knowing when he was online by the comments he would leave when you posted a new photo or video. It was normally a cheeky comment followed by a set of emojis, something that always brought a light blush to your cheeks and giggles from your friends.
Whenever he posted, you always did the same, both of you liking and commenting on photos relentlessly. You kept up with his band through his stories, even popping in on the livestream on release day just to see him dancing with his dog.
He was absolutely adorable, and while you wanted to reach out and say hi in private, you knew he probably wouldn’t even see it; besides, he’s a rockstar and you’re a dancer. Talk about being worlds away, right?
Right?
Suddenly, you snapped back to reality, a name appearing in the stream of comments that made your heart skip. You quickly grabbed a piece of paper and wrote down the news, being careful to hide it from the camera as you slid it across the counter to Jade.
He’s in the live, and said I look cute.
She picked up the note and raised an eyebrow out of view of the camera, a devilish grin on her lips as she immediately opened her phone.
“What are you doing?” You asked her, standing up straight as soft music started playing over the speakers in your living area.
Jade grabbed your hand and your livestream, dragging you both into the room. “I want to teach you and your livestream a new choreo I’m working on. Maybe you can even help me make it better.”
You scoffed at that, knowing her undeniable talent as she set everything up. The song was Youngblood, the smooth notes practically fogging up the windows on their own as you started to learn.
With a quick break for food once it arrived, you and Jade taught your livestream how to dance, laughter and music taking over both of you until you finally ended your live.
You were covered in sweat, the soft sheen of it against the lights in your home obviously as your chest heaved.
“Did you really need help with that choreo?” You asked Jade, your friend sprawled out in a starfish against the floors.
She flashed you a smile. “Absolutely not,” she stated, sitting up. “But lover boy was watching, and he needs to know you have sex appeal.”
You coughed, choking on a bit of spit at her words. “Jade!” You said, your best friend cackling as she scrambled up to her feet.
“Love you!” She said as you chased her away, the woman dipping into her room and locking the door behind her.
You groaned, blushing deeply as you hid yourself away in your room.
***
Tour life had become routine for Calum, as it always does, but the nights off always left him a bit bored. Being in strange cities left him without much to do this close to the end of tour, but he thoroughly enjoyed opening your livestream and watching you laugh.
Michael must have been a psychic, cause what started as an appreciation for your talents has become much more than that. When you laughed he felt himself smiling, his eyes crinkling as they do whenever he got to hear you speak. He was crushing hard, his post notifications on for the dancer he had fallen for over the months as he kept himself busy with his passion and job.
When he saw the notification of your livestream he immediately jumped in, joining and smiling immediately as he saw your face fill his phone screen.
You were smiling at your friend, resting your cheek against your hand as you leaned on what looked like a kitchen counter. You were looking absolutely adorable, the smile on Calum’s face hardly fading as he gained the confidence to send a comment.
He saw your eyes light up as you looked at your screen, the expression on your face making his heart skip while his own eyes traced the shape of your face. You scribbled something down and passed it to your friend, the two of you then shifting to the living area where the phone was set up to expose the extra space around you.
His eyes stayed locked on your body as you moved, fluidity and grace in each step as you were taught a new dance. The tones of the music brought out in your dancing brought a slight blush to his cheeks as you put the whole thing together. The dance itself was sultry, but when you moved to it, the tempo took on a whole new heartbeat, and suddenly the song was so much better in Calum’s mind.
It felt like it was too soon when you finished, bowing to your friend as she grinned wildly. Calum’s palms were a little bit sweaty as he watched you move closer to the camera, the live ending soon after as you moved on with your life.
The images of you moving still floated through Calum’s mind, his memory fixated on it as he finally opened up his Instagram DM’s.
Your username popped up immediately when he started a new conversation, his first message being typed out effortlessly by his thumbs.
Saw your live tonight, he typed. Thanks for dancing to our song.
It was simple enough, he thought, but hoped you wouldn’t think it was too simple; nerves danced along his muscles as he pressed send, his words to you now being sent through a series of ones and zeros as he quickly locked his phone and pushed it away. Now that he had made the move he was terrified of your response, the man trying to distract himself as he climbed out of his bunk and hunted down Michael.
His best friend was sitting on the bus couch, scrolling through whatever social media platform as Cal plopped down beside him.
“You talk to that dancer yet?” Michael asked immediately, hardly glancing up from his phone as Calum chuckled.
“You need to stop reading my mind,” he scolded gently. “Yeah, I, uh, just messaged them actually. They danced to Youngblood on a livestream.”
Michael looked at Calum and wiggled his eyebrows. “And judging by the blush on your face I’d say it was a good performance.”
Calum’s blush only deepened as Michael laughed, a light ping of Cal’s phone interrupting their conversation.
Michael stood and grabbed the phone as Calum froze in place, placing it on the couch beside his best friend before he sat down again.
“Answer it.”
“But-”
“Calum Thomas, you answer that lovely person right this second or I’ll do it for you.”
The magic words made Calum open his phone, knowing if Michael had to answer the message he would never be able to show his face around you. Nervous butterflies exploded in his stomach as he opened your response, Michael reading over his shoulder.
Well hello, handsome. Thanks for writing such a good song, hahaha. It’s one of my favorites!
“Well, mate,” Michael said, grinning as he slapped Calum on the back. “Looks like you can handle it.”
***
Your new video was incredible, how long did that take? You’re amazing!
Calum’s newest message to you made you smile, sweat making your hair cling to your forehead as you typed out a quick response.
Thanks, I had quite a good muse for that one ;)
Oh really? Must be a lucky muse if they inspire something so beautiful.
A heavy blush landed on your cheeks as you typed back a response, the click of someone’s fingers gaining your attention as you hit send.
“I know that’s not a phone out,” Kyle scolded gently, a sheepish smile pulling on your lips.
“Sorry Kyle, I’m putting it away now,” you promised, thumbs typing a quick message to Calum before burying the device deep within your bag.
It’s been about a month or two since Calum first messaged you, the banter and flirting starting immediately as you both finally got to have the private conversations you had been dreaming of. At times it would inch away from the innocent compliments and small talk to something sexier, but you both kept yourselves as appropriate as possible - sometimes.
Now, as Kyle reeled you back in to finish teaching the new choreo he had worked on, your mind wandered to Calum’s real thoughts about your IGTV video you had posted hours before.
Hearing Wildflower for the first time had sent you directly to the empty dance studio your parents had built you at their place, your feet and body taking almost no time to settle in as you started hammering out a choreo to Calum’s melody. You had been up all night doing it, barely making it to Kyle’s class on time as notifications from Instagram started pouring in, praises about your technique and song choice washing over you.
However, something tugged within you when you saw Calum’s message. It was different coming from him for some reason, and it filled you with a mix of excitement and pleasure; it was a weird mix for you, something you hadn’t ever truly felt before, but you hesitantly welcomed it with open arms.
The class passed by slower than you wanted, each time you ran through the choreography only taking up the smallest bit of time as you anxiously waited for the clock to strike 4 so you can open your messages again and talk to him.
Finally, your magical moment arrived when you could pack up and leave, Kyle giving you a big hug and saying his thanks before you started to hurry out the door.
“Hey!” Kyle called after you, making you pause in the doorway and spin around. He had a grin on his face. “Hope this guy is a good one.”
You beamed and laughed. “I think he is. Thanks, Kyle.”
He smiled and waved as you turned around again and bolted to your car, locking the doors as soon as they had shut as you opened up your messages from Calum.
He had sent a cheeky reply to your message earlier, followed by a video sent to you. With captured breath you tapped on the message, the video unfolding before you.
It was focused on his feet as he walked over shiny white tile, the camera panning up to expose the interior of LAX - or that’s what the location filter said, at least. You felt a grin crack open your face as you quickly realized what this meant.
Calum was home from tour.
Your thumbs started to type faster than you thought they could.
You’re home!
Almost immediately, the little bubble appeared.
Home, and ready to see you if you’re up for it.
Butterflies exploded in your stomach as you typed an affirmative message, both of you quickly setting up a time and place before you drove back to your home.
“Jade!” You yelled as you stepped inside, dropping your bag at the door while you quickly slipped off your shoes.
Your friend's head poked out from around a corner as you started shedding clothes, her hand immediately flying to cover her eyes as she yelped. “Whoa, where’s the fire?! Why are you undressing in the middle of the house?”
“I have a date.” You stated, stopping just outside of your door as you turned to face her. “With Calum. And I need you to pick my outfit while I shower!”
Jade uncovered her eyes and beamed, immediately following you into your room while you ducked into your private bathroom. While you had your shower, Jade was yelling questions to you, the two of you plotting and planning until you finally stepped out and pulled on the clothes she had decided on.
Your light blue jeans and white crop top were the perfect amount of casual, a light sprinkle of shiny jewelry being thrown in until Jade gave you the approval. When you checked the time on your phone, you nodded, standing and thanking her profusely as you finally went out the door and into your car again.
By now, the sunshine of LA was changing colors, shedding the harsh tone of the day for the warmth of dusk that was soon to come. The coffee shop Calum had chosen was perfect, too, the dwindling sunlight being perfect as you sat in a chair just outside the shop.
You anxiously looked around while you waited, playing with some of the rings around your fingers as you waited patiently for your date to arrive. Is this really even a date? You thought, suddenly panicking about how you looked. What if this is just a casual-
“This seat taken?”
His voice took you by surprise, your eyes trailing upwards to meet the warm, smiling brown ones of Calum Hood.
You smiled a little bit, leaning your elbows on the table. “Well I was saving it for a cute boy,” you teased. “But I guess you can sit as well.”
Calum gave you a look of mock hurt. “Ouch, right in the ego,” he teased back, slowly reaching across the table to take your hand. “Nice to finally meet you in person.”
He spoke as he lifted your hand to his lips, pressing a sweet and seductive kiss to your knuckles as his gaze held you captive. You blushed deeply, smiling in an attempt to cover it.
“And the same for you,” you said softly, smiling as he held on to your hand.
The two of you sat there and chatted as the sun set around you, the cool of the evening wrapping around you as you got lost in Calum’s words. Conversation came easily with him, both of you feeling like you had already known each other for so much longer than reality; something with the two of you just worked, and you loved being able to lose track of time with him.
Honestly, it was far too easy for you to lose yourself in his very being, but you decided not to focus entirely on that.
When the quiet and kind barista came out to put up the tables and chairs, you apologized profusely, Calum chuckling as he stood up. You quickly followed after him, the two of you apologizing again before starting to walk away, Calum’s hand slipping easily around your own while you blushed.
The two of you slowly walked back to your cars together, a comfortable silence settling in as you made your way to your cars. He walked you right up to your drivers side door, the man smiling sheepishly as he looked at you.
“Thanks for being willing to meet with me,” he said sweetly, bringing your joined hands up to his chest. He held them there, right next to his heart, which you could feel beating against your knuckles. “I’m glad you didn’t think I was a serial killer or something.”
You laughed, shaking your head. “And I’m glad you didn’t think I was a catfish,” you joked, Calum smiling and laughing.
When you both settled down again your gazes met, another blush coating your cheeks as he leaned down. His lips connected with your cheek quickly, the man standing up straight again as he released your hand.
While you were sad that he let you go, you knew it was time for you to go home; it was getting late, and you had a workshop to be at in the morning, your mind still racing as you dug out your keys and unlocked your car.
Calum pulled the door open for you, letting you slide in as he leaned against the top of the door.
“Will we be able to see each other again?” He asked softly, his chin resting on his arm as he draped it over the door.
You thought for a second, making a bit of a face. “I guess so, but I’ll have to have my people call your people.”
Calum grinned, chuckling at your teasing. “Well my people will be anxiously awaiting your people.” He took a second after he finished speaking, getting a serious look on his face as he looked at you. “I’d like to see you again, though. Maybe for dinner?”
You smiled, reaching up to take his hand. “I would love that,” you said, giving his fingers a squeeze as he brought them to his lips again.
He smiled and let you settle in, carefully closing the door for you before he stepped back a bit. He watched you go, making sure you were able to pull onto the roads okay before he got into his own vehicle.
Once Calum’s driver seat door had closed, he pulled out his phone, immediately pulling up the group text with his bandmates.
Guys, he typed. I’m so fucked.

Wish I Was Better-- (c.h)
Tumblr media
Based off the song ‘Wish I Was Better’ by Kina and yaeow. It’s amazing. It put me in my feels and this was born. It’s hella angsty.
Word count: 1130
• • • •
He’s not sure exactly what made him do it. After seeing you in a tagged photo on his social media feed, Calum had no control over his fingers as they clicked on your name. He scrolled and scrolled just to see what you’ve been up to over the last two years.
You travelled to Disney World and took tons of photos at Harry Potter World. An endeavor you both wanted to do together.
You went to the beach a lot and posed confidently in front of the camera, a large smile on your face that still jumped started his heart. You went out drinking with some girlfriends, in an array of photos it showed you getting more drunk-happy.
A feat he knew didn’t take too long, after two drinks and a shot you would already be pretty drunk. Memories race in his mind at the many drunken nights you had spent together. He always loved the way you needed to be hanging off him, touching him in any way that you could.
A special moment in particular flashed across his mind’s eye when you somehow got separated in the limo Ashton insisted on taking for a night out in Vegas. You were three people away and even when you tried to get closer to him, he told you to stay seated so you wouldn’t hurt yourself. So what did you do?
Reached as far as you could go just so you could grab hold of his boot and hold it in your hand. That was when Calum realized he was in love with you.
As he continues to scroll, he finds pictures of you and him that are in their own album on his phone. Pictures he couldn’t erase because of the happy memories and the beautiful girl who made them that way.
Pictures of the two of you celebrating New Year’s, him in a shiny gold top hat and you in your springy headband. It consisted of two pictures, the first was a normal pose with drunken smiles and when he swiped left it was of a drunken kiss. He remembers you tasted of sweet lemons because of all the lemon drop shots you took.
The pictures of you and him blur together in one big collage of distant memories and thousands of moments of happiness. When he got to the post you made for his birthday, that’s what made his heart drop to his stomach.
You used the full 10 photo limit that Instagram allowed. The first few were of him onstage, neon lights behind him or one solo light as he sang a verse. The next few were of him and Duke cuddling or sleeping, ones you took that he had no idea about until you made this post. The next pair was of him hiking on the dusty rocks of LA, your hand in the shot as he led you up a steep terrain.
The last two were of you and him. The first was actually the first picture you took together. It was at Ashton’s house, you were sitting close on the couch, he remembers you were touching from the tops of your shoulders all the way down to your calves. He still remembers the fruity smell of your perfume. The last one was in Australia, his arms wrapped tightly around his waist as he was kissing your cheek and you smiled brilliantly at the camera.
It was hard for him to swallow, a lump appeared in his throat as he gazed at the photo. He was so happy to have you with him back in his home country, the Australian heat had you in loose dresses and loose tops, the sun kissed your skin perfectly.
In your caption you dedicated the whole day to him, since it was his birthday after all, praising him on living his dream and showing his love for the fans every time he went on stage. You mentioned how good of a dog dad he was, how you couldn’t believe the perfect human as him turned into someone special from one conversation on a couch and that love transcended all the way to Australia.
On the opposite end of the coin of happiness, he remembers the fight that tore you two apart. Calum’s always been a private person, he doesn’t want fans knowing what goes on in his personal life. And part of his personal life was you. Your social media handles were all private anyway so he was fine with you posting photos of you together because he trusted your friends and family.
He loved just having one good thing to himself, with just his most trusted friends and family knowing of your relationship. After the trip to Australia that’s when the fissure cracked the solid foundation of your relationship. You didn’t want to be kept in the dark anymore. You understood the reasoning but hiding out in the open started to strain you.
The crack only cracked more, pushing you and him further and further apart until you both went your separate ways. It was a mutual ending but that didn’t mean it didn’t hurt any less. Two years has gone by and he wishes that he’d run into you. Every day.
When he looks back at his phone there’s a ‘new post’ at the top and he taps it. You made a post just now and he clicks on the image so it fills his whole screen. It’s of you in his green empathy hoodie, the one you absolutely loved and the one he’d thought he lost. Of course you had it along with a piece of his heart.
Your caption was of a quote from both of your favorite poet, Michael Faudet.
“I could taste/ the sting of whisky/ on your lips/ a final kiss/ before we said/ our last goodbye/ without a word/ being said/”
And that absolutely broke him. He took that as a sign and went to your name that was still saved at the top of his favorites.
You answer on the fourth ring.
“Calum?”
“I’m calling you up cause I’m missing you, I don’t even know what I’m gonna do. And I know all your friends, they hate me too and I wish I was better at the things I do. I say I don’t care but that’s not the truth, I’m still not over you. I’m still in love with you,” he rambles quickly, his words tumbling through his emotions.
You’re silent for the longest moment of his life and he thinks you’re going to hang up and he’d never hear your voice again.
“Where are you? Do you want to come over and talk?”
His heart lifts within him, and he swears he’ll do things different this time.

flowers, maybe daisies, might relieve the gloom. - an a.i blurb
Tumblr media
a/n: i lowkey blame @sexgodashton for starting this whole mini series of boomer!ash things, but i also adore this because boomer!ash is soft as hell.  and also a lil d*ddy but we don’t need to talk about that.  title is from wait by sweeney todd bc i love it.  alternative title was gonna be from L.G. FUAD by motion city soundtrack
word count:
warnings: ashton irwin being a thirst trapping, lemon stealing whore. i’m kidding it’s just a solo ash fic w no smut but some mild ash thirst trapping.
-----
‘ashtonirwin started a live video.’
Ashton didn’t often go live on Instagram, but this shelter in place order had left him ultimately bored - writing a song every day before noon, sure, but anything after that was a blur.  Occasionally he would have interviews or live-streams with the band, but on days without that he was left alone with his thoughts, and his thoughts weren’t always the safest place to be; so talking to fans it was.
It was going well so far, simply asking fans how their quarantine was going - bringing some of them into the livestream so he could talk to some face to face.  One girl in particular had caught his attention when they began to discuss hobbies she had picked up during the time she’d spent at home.
“Yeah, I’m learning to garden.  I have a tomato plant that is just starting to sprout actual tomatoes, so that’s kind of exciting,” She had said, a nervous laugh escaping.
“Well, I would hope that your tomato plant is sprouting tomatoes, it would be a little concerning if it was growing something else,” Ashton replied with a chuckle, the girl giving a small shrug but still laughing along with him.
“You should look into it if you’ve got the room at your house, I bet it would feel rather rewarding to be able to cook something with your own fresh vegetables.”
“Would save me quite a bit of money too.  Can I grow yeast? I’d like to learn how to make my own bread but here in L.A. you can’t find yeast anywhere.”
The conversation continued like that for a few minutes more, Ashton taking only a couple more fans into the livestream after that to talk to before he decided he should probably do something else productive with his day.  Something like learning to garden.
It surprised Ashton the things you were able to order online during this time - soil being the main thing.  He also read that saving coffee grounds would help, and he was excited at the idea of his insane coffee habit wouldn’t be completely useless.  He ended up buying seeds for tomatoes, mint, sunflowers, lemongrass, and zucchini.  The lemongrass and mint was specifically for Calum, realizing he would be able to dry the plants out once he had harvested them so he could make the man his very own tea.
When his package finally arrived, Ashton spread the packages out, sliding them across the table as though he was some card dealer in Las Vegas.  Thinking the fans would find it amusing, he took a picture of the spread and added it to his story with the caption of ‘pick a card, any card…’.  Maybe it would only be funny to him, but it did prompt a fire reaction from Michael.
It seemed as though the reaction from fans were positive though, them taking to Twitter to let him know their excitement about his new endeavour.  That’s where his weekly livestreams began.  He would show everyone the progress he was making with his plants, and just in general him chatting with fans.  Ashton never really thought of how refreshing it could be to just talk to the fans, without the worry of time restrictions or anyone’s personal safety in the way; in fact, it left him rather inspired, loving their fans even more if it were at all possible.
A particularly warm day in L.A. left Ashton wondering if he should go out to the garden that day - but it was the day he would normally livestream, and he was excited to show what he was up to that day.  Ashton wanted to plant another tomato plant, and also the lemons on his infamous tree had enough for him to make some lemonade so he was going to go through that as well.
Clad in some cut off jeans, or as Calum so affectionately called them his jorts, and a white tank top, he pulled up the live option on Instagram and waited for the people to begin to filter in before he started to speak.
“Hey guys! Just gonna wait for more of you to filter in before I actually head outside, but I thought that since you guys love my lemon tree so much, I’d make some lemonade.  Fuck, I sound like a YouTuber.  Is that gonna be my next career, is just YouTube tutorials on how to make shitty lemonade?” Ashton laughed to himself, slicing the lemon so he could juice it, ignoring the comments he saw about murdering his lemon children.
It didn’t take him long to make the lemonade, making mild conversation with the fans while he stirred in a little bit of sugar and some cheat mint he had ordered while waiting for his own to grow.
“Alright, now that I’m waiting for that to cool, probably best we go outside and check on those tomatoes, hm?”
It had been weird at first, talking to himself; but he quickly realized that he talked to himself anyways, even without the phone in front of him, so it couldn’t have been too weird for anyone who could overhear him.
“So I wanted to plant another tomato plant today, because everyone can use a friend right now, you know?” He looked into the camera, a smile spreading across his face when he saw the flood of cute little emojis that followed.  “M’gonna be like the Bob Ross of gardening. No mistakes, only happy accidents or whatever it was he said.”
Ashton began to work away at his garden, building up a sweat in the process.  It wasn’t until he leaned back, glancing at his phone did he see a text from Michael flash across the top.
‘Mate, Crystal said stop thirst trapping the fans.’
Ashton’s brow furrowed, unsure of what the text was saying, “Okay so I just got a text from Michael - what’s thirst trapping? And am I currently doing it?”
Of all the comments that followed, he noticed one that said ‘I mean… I’m not gonna say either way but take a look at yourself and get back to us’.  Another one told him that it was when someone wears something in order to provoke risque texts, or gain attention from someone.
Ashton pouted, looking down at his appearance.  He was kind of sweaty, but he didn’t think that the fans would mind him being covered in dirt and sweat, it’s not as though they had to smell him.  Though, he would admit that he needed a shower.
“Well, since my tomato plant has been… planted next to its’ friend, and I’m apparently thirst trapping you all, I should probably go shower and clean up.  Is me mentioning a shower thirst trapping as well?” Ashton rubbed his face over his hands, a small huff leaving his lips, “I don’t know… Fellow youths, tweet me and lemme know.  Also, may hold a poll later on what to name these guys.” He flipped the camera around, struggling for a moment, to show the sunflowers that were starting to sprout, “M’thinking of naming one Denise.  Just seems like a Denise.”
After his small speech was over, he ended the stream, grinning to himself.  He hadn’t meant to show off his body in such a way, but it was funny to know that even with him hardly doing anything but be himself they still lost their shit.
Glancing around at his garden, he felt himself swell with a mild sense of pride.  He was still a ways off from seeing any fruits of his labour (literally), but it made him feel good knowing he did something with his time at home, instead of slipping further into his mind which wasn’t always the kindest to him.
Ashton realized that when he was gardening, it was similar to songwriting in a way where all of his self doubts and fears went away and he could just pour himself into it - the reward being well worth the risk in the end.
Once his shower was done, he sat outside in his backyard, sipping his lemonade and enjoying the sunshine - realizing that having to stay home wasn’t all too bad, if it meant he could reset his mind, and do some small part to help how he could during that time.

could you maybe write about the first time cal plays her a song a wrote for her :) i love your writing thank you sweets
thank you so much for enjoying everything! it means so much! 🥰
omg he's super nervous because yeah he's written songs about people before but he's never been there the first time that person listened to it. he kinda makes a big deal about it??? soft calum wanting to make the moment special makes me soft. -he'd probably want to play it in the car for the first time because you've always said the best place to listen to music is in the car. he doesn't tell you what he's planned but you know something's up when you drive up to your favorite spot to watch the city lights after you both went out for dinner. it was probably pizza because calum loves pizza and he asked for extra pineapple. you look over at him once he parked and you can tell he's nervous because he keeps tapping his fingers against the steering wheel. He gets really quiet as a random song plays out, finally looking over at you as it ends and the beginning notes of the new song start playing. you're confused because you've never heard the song before so you ask him who sings it, your eyes widening as you realize it's him. It's probably a solo song because let's be honest, he wrote the damn thing with you in mind and he didn't want luke or the other boys singing about you and your relationship. you can't help the smile as you listen to the song, laughing quietly as he managed to slip in a reference to the time you fell on your first date and he had to put a bandage on your knee, which led to people thinking you'd gone down on him, that day. he's so nervous when the song fades out, he can't meet your gaze and even when you tell him how much you love the song he can't stop blushing. he basically poured his heart out to you and the world to know and now he can't take it back but the way you pulled his face close to yours and kissed him makes him not regret it one bit.

without further ado, please enjoy the fic I wrote mostly all last night while looping drag me down for thirteen hours straight :))
Calum doesn’t know what fuckhead came up with the idea of having a joint Halloween party for Sigma Nu and Sigma Pi this year, but he really wants to fight them. He thinks he’d probably have a lot of people on his side, considering how much Sig Nu and and Sig Pi hate each other, so he tucks the idea of interfraternity war away in his head as a contingency plan in case the party goes to shit, as joint parties with any other frat always seem to. And it’s not like it’s a one night thing, because all three days of the “Halloweekend,” as Michael refuses to stop calling it, are supposedly going to be spent with Sig Nu, one party at their own house, and two at the shithole that he assumes is the Sig Nu house, in some deranged attempt at bonding. He’ll be lucky to make it out alive, probably.
Before college, he really never did anything of his own for Halloween, mainly used to being used as a prop or side character for his sister Mali-Koa’s elaborate costumes, or, after she’d moved out, sticking a pair of fake fangs in his mouth to hand out candy to the few kids who rang the doorbell despite his efforts to keep all the lights in the house off. Last year, as a freshman, he’d gotten roped into a group costume with some of the other Sig Pi pledges, and while his memories are...hazy at best, he vaguely remembers falling asleep in a Teletubbies onesie at the end of the night.
This year, though, no one has tried to tell him what to dress up as, so it’s now a few hours before the first of the three parties, and Calum still has no ideas for what he should dress up as. A quick Google search for “cheap easy costumes” hadn’t really been all that helpful, so he decides to ignore the problem and take a nap until he actually has to leave.
A few hours later, Michael barges into the room to drag him out of bed, and looks around for a few seconds before asking, “You don’t have a costume, do you?”
Calum groans, pulling himself out of bed and wracking his brain for an idea that he can plausibly bullshit in the next few seconds, because he can’t let Michael be right and have something to tease him about, so he blurts, “I’m going to be a salt shaker.”
Michael gapes at him a bit for a few seconds before asking, “What the fuck? What kind of costume is that? What are you even going to wear for that?”
Calum mentally kicks himself in the shin, as hard as possible, because he really hasn’t thought this through. Why couldn’t he have just said cat or cowboy or something even slightly in the realm of normal Halloween costumes?
“Uhhh.. y’know that baseball tee I have? The one with the black sleeves and white middle?”
“I’m pretty sure that’s in my closet, but continue.”
“What the fuck, dude? Give it back!”
“You haven’t noticed that it’s missing for like three weeks, I just assumed it was mine now. Tell me what the rest of the costume is,” Michael demands.
“I’ll just tape a piece of paper with a big ‘S’ on it to the front of my shirt, and then put one of those pots with the holes on my head. Bam! Salt shaker!” Calum says, moderately impressed with his ability to pull stuff out of his ass this quickly.
“What makes you think we even have a colander?” Michael asks, crossing his arms.
Calum gives him a blank stare. “A what?”
“That’s what the pots with the holes are called, you idiot.”
“You think Harry would live anywhere that didn’t have a fully-stocked kitchen? There’s bound to be one in one of the cabinets or something.”
“Fine. I’ll go get the shirt while you look for the colander.” Before Calum can object, suggest that he look through Michael’s closet himself and steal back any of his other clothes that have somehow wound up there, Michael’s already halfway down the hallway.
Sighing, he trudges down the stairs towards the kitchen, where one of the seniors, Niall, is sitting with his head in his hands, dressed as a pirate.
“Hey, dude, nice costume,” Calum offers as a greeting. “You wouldn’t happen to know where I can find a colander, would you? I know Harry—”
“Do not talk to me about Harry right now,” Niall says, and Calum stops his search for a moment to send him a concerned look.
“What happ—”
“That needy-ass motherfucker thinks that just because I didn’t want to do a couples’ costume with him, it means I don’t love him anymore! Never mind the fact that he literally mentioned this idea to me yesterday, well past the point where everyone finalizes their costumes.”
Calum offers him a sympathetic look and offers, “Couples’ costumes are boring and cheesy anyways. Neither of you are missing out on anything, at least in my opinion.”
Niall lifts his head up from where he’d been repeatedly hitting it on the table to smirk at Calum and ask, “Have a lot of experience with couples’ costumes, do you?”
Luckily, Calum has finally found the colander, so he opts to ignore the question and just leave the kitchen entirely.
When he gets back upstairs, Michael’s in his room, unabashedly checking himself out in the mirror that’s on the back of the closet door. “Yeah, yeah, your anime character of the year looks great, now get out and let me get ready.”
Michael scoffs, “Get ready, as if you’re even doing anything,” but moves towards the door anyway.
Michael’s right, the costume is ridiculously easy to throw together, and two minutes later, they’re both out the door, walking across Fraternity Row to get to the Sig Nu house, where the music is already blaring and strobe lights throw red, then green, then blue shadows across everyone’s faces. On his way to the kitchen to grab a drink, he sees Niall and Harry walk into the house, holding hands and laughing together, so he assumes that their fight has blown over as quickly as all of their other fights always seem to.
He sees a few different trays of shots and decides he might as well take one to get the night started off right. After, he realizes that he probably shouldn’t grab a beer now, Mali’s rule about sticking to one color of booze for the night ringing in his head, so he settles for filling up a Solo cup with whatever glow in the dark gin concoction is in all the punch bowls. He wouldn’t put it past the Sig Nus to poison the drink on purpose, but it tastes relatively normal, so he grabs another cup for Michael and attempts to leave the kitchen, steering around the couple sloppily making out in the doorway.
It’s harder to spot Michael than it usually is, considering that at least half the people at the party are wearing some type of wig, but Calum eventually makes his way back over to him. He’s talking to Niall and Harry, and they both offer him a smile before continuing on with the conversation. Once that reaches a lull, Niall leans closer to Calum and says, “Mate, you didn’t need to lie to me about couples’ costumes.”
Calum has no idea what Niall is talking about, so he shakes his head and asks, “What are you talking about?”
Niall cackles, and Harry turns to look at him adoringly before going back to talking to Michael, and Calum is more confused than ever. Niall grabs his shoulder and spins him around and points in the direction of a clump of people. “You’re salt and he’s pepper, right? That’s such an obvious couples’ costume, although you two do seem to have a bit of a disconnect on how much effort you put in. That guy really went all out. And dude, why haven’t you told us that you have a boyfriend? You know we’d want to know about that, give him the Sig Pi seal of approval and all that. Wait. Unless he’s a Sig Nu, in which case, I don’t want to know because I’d probably have to kick you out. That’s a joke, by the way.”
Calum barely has the presence of mind to mumble, “He’s not my boyfriend,” before crossing the room to get to the guy in the hyper-realistic pepper grinder costume.
The guy smiles as Calum approaches, and despite the costume covering most of his body, Calum can tell that he’s cute. “Why so salty?” Pepper Guy greets, the sunshiney smile still on his face.
Calum smirks and replies, “Maybe I just need some more spice in my life.” Pepper Guy laughs, and just like everything else about him, it’s cute, and Calum wants to hear it again. “I’m Calum, by the way.”
“Ashton. Nice to meet you, man.”
Calum leans a little closer so that it’s easier to hold a conversation over the loud music and asks, “What’s the deal with the super realistic pepper grinder costume?”
Ashton makes a strange noise, somewhere between a laugh and a groan, and says, “I got it off some random sketchy website, but it was supposed to be a chess piece. Something clearly went wrong somewhere in production, and my friend Luke said that I might as well sharpie a “P” onto it and just go with it.”
Calum makes a noise of agreement, mind stuck on a dumb idea. Before he can reconsider, he sends Michael a quick text that says if u’ve already taken over as dj, can u play that come grind w me song? and a few seconds later, he hears the opening notes and grins.
“Hey, Ashton?”
“Yeah?” Ashton replies, as realization slips across his face.
Right in time with the singer’s voice, Calum says, “Come grind with me,” and he laughingly pulls Ashton towards the makeshift dance floor. Neither of them can really dance, so it’s a mess of laughter and limbs flopping around, but Calum feels an unmistakable electricity between them too, and once the song is over, they stay for the next few, enraptured by each other. When they finally exhaust themselves with all the laughing and mock-twerking, Ashton asks Calum if he wants a refill, and when Calum nods, he grabs his hand and starts pulling him towards the kitchen.
Once they’re there, Calum goes for another serving of the glow in the dark punch, which is steadily dimming as the glow sticks run out of light. Since that’s really the only light source in the kitchen, Calum doesn’t see Ashton until he’s turning around and Ashton is right in front of him, reaching around him for a cup. Calum’s kind of trapped with his back against the counter, Ashton’s pepper grinder costume tall enough to really block out the view of the rest of the party, and the world narrows, all of it contained in where their eyes connect, and then, after Calum has safely set his drink back on the counter, that narrow point expands just a bit to where their mouths land on each other’s. The colander gets knocked off Calum’s head as he lifts himself up to sit on the counter, wrapping his legs around Ashton’s waist to pull him closer, as close as he can possibly get him.
Ashton’s sucking a mark into Calum’s neck when Calum has his first coherent thought of the past few minutes and pulls back, breathlessly asking “Wait, wait, you’re not a Sig Nu, are you?” fully expecting the answer to be no.
Ashton steps back a little too, and it takes him a second to register the question before he groans, “Of course you’re a fucking Sig Pi, that’s the only explanation that makes sense for me never seeing you anywhere before. You’re too hot for me to not notice otherwise.”
Calum flushes and mentally curses out whatever idiots had started the rivalry between Sig Nu and Sig Pi before he grabs his stupid colander off the ground and gives Ashton an awkward wave goodbye.
Once he’s out of the kitchen, he quickly glances around in search of Michael, and when he can’t immediately find him, he just gives up and leaves entirely. Fuck Sig Nu.
He spends most of the next day bitching about his hangover, and then, a few hours later, bitching about his hangover while helping to set up the house for that night’s party.
He doesn’t really have much more of a costume for tonight, throwing on a gray shirt and sharpie-ing some whiskers on his face. Michael takes pity on him and makes him a headband with an approximation of what they both think mouse ears are, and Calum is mildly entertained by going up to everyone and saying, “I’m a mouse, duh.”
His heart’s really not in the right place to party tonight, which is probably breaking the cardinal rule of being in a frat, so he sticks close to Michael, who has taken over the role of DJ, once again. Zayn from Alpha Sig strolls over after about half an hour, devil horns askew, and quietly says to Calum, “Cat and mouse, huh? Didn’t think you had it in you, Hood, that’s proper cute. Not as cute as me and Lou, mind you, but still, I respect the effort.”
Calum is reluctant to look up and see who he’s accidentally matching with today, because, with his luck, it’s probably another guy from Sig Nu. When he does eventually look up, he immediately makes eye contact with Ashton, who happens to be walking by, dressed in all black and with whiskers sharpie’d onto his face too. Calum wants to bang his head into a wall because the universe clearly hates him if it’s having him match with Ashton again. Even beyond that, Ashton looks so good out of the stupid pepper grinder and in all black that Calum wants to make out with him again.
Ashton is clearly having similar thoughts when he gestures Calum over and leads them towards a little pocket of quiet space in one of the lesser used hallways.
Calum really wants to hook his thumb into one of Ashton’s belt loops, so he does, as Ashton looks him up and down a few times. “Is the mouse costume your way of telling me you want me to chase you?”
Calum murmurs, “Shut up,” before leaning in to kiss him, frat rivalry be damned. It’s just as good as it was the night before, maybe even more so, now that the pepper costume isn’t in their way. At this point, there’s no denying the chemistry. It can’t be blamed on being drunk since Calum’s been nursing the same beer all night, and the part of his brain that’s protesting against being this close to a Sig Nu is getting smaller and smaller as he and Ashton continue to kiss.
They stay in that hallway for the rest of the night, eventually sliding down to sit on the ground, legs pressed together, sharing stupid stories about their respective frats. Calum’s surprised when the music shuts off because it feels like it’s only been an hour at most, that’s how easy it is to talk to Ashton. Ashton heaves himself up and reaches both hands down to help Calum up, too.
“I don’t think there’s any way you can match your costume to mine tomorrow, but I’ll come find you anyways,” Ashton says, as he leaves Calum with a kiss on the cheek.
Calum’s too wired to sleep much, so he opts to help clean up the house instead, and that takes up enough of his day that when nighttime rolls around, he’s stood staring at his closet without a costume idea for the third time in as many days. After ten minutes of consideration, he digs through one of his drawers to pull out the fake vampire fangs that he had somehow remembered to bring with him, and he goes down the hall to ask Jack to put some fake blood on his mouth and neck. Jack always goes all out for Halloween.
Once he’s at the party, he doesn’t have to wait long to find Ashton, who looks incredibly good in his werewolf costume. There’s fake blood on him too, which is really the only way their costumes could be understood to be matching, or so Calum thinks. Tonight, Jack and Alex are the ones to tease him, “You know what, I agree. Jacob and Edward should have ended up together, Bella was boring as shit.”
Calum’s really not bothered by the comments at all, so much so that he’s already thinking of couples’ costumes ideas for next year when he finds his way over to Ashton and whispers, “Let’s get out of here.”
“Are you trying to make a move on me? I’m a respectable Sigma Nu, I don’t know if I can allow that.”
Calum laughs and tugs him out the door, “Told you I wanted some more spice in my life.”

everybody's got their demons, even wide awake or dreaming | part two
Tumblr media
Hello friends! Hope you’re having a lovely day. It’s time for part two of this series! Lizzie takes her opportunity to interview Calum one-on-one in this part. If you need to catch up on Part One, you can do that here. Onwards!
(This is a fem!OC story)
Word count: 3.2k
Warnings: none? i don’t think?
More writing here | send thoughts/feedback/suggestions here | if you’d like to be on my taglist go here
The day or so leading up to Lizzie’s one on one interview with Calum was a blur, as Lizzie tried to fix her body clock and orientate herself with how to get around LA. Her boss had offered her the opportunity to hire a rental car, but the idea of driving on the wrong side of the road was too much for Lizzie to stomach, so Ubers were the go.
Her body sometimes overslept, sometimes woke her up at 4am, so Lizzie had downloaded a yoga and meditation app to try and sort herself out. She might’ve almost given herself a concussion after toppling over while trying to do a particularly tricky pose, but no one needed to hear about that. The bruises on her elbow were embarrassing enough.
Danielle had sent Lizzie a text the morning of her lunchtime interview with Calum, confirming the time and place as they’d discussed. Lizzie had handwritten some notes for her questions, trying to contemplate what she could ask Calum that would differ to the others. Or maybe she should ask them all the same questions, and then in the piece she could compare and contrast responses? It was so hard to know what would make the best piece, especially with interviewing Calum in particular. Lizzie knew from watching other interviews, and in her group interview with all of the band the other day (and from back in their school days) that Calum was a man of few words. When he did speak, it was usually with purpose and thought, and made for some great content, but he wasn’t always particularly forthcoming. Which is why it had surprised Lizzie that Calum had volunteered for the first solo interview, but given Michael’s behaviour, she was glad to be continuing with the profile piece at all.
It was a really warm day, so Lizzie had to forego her usual blazer and jeans in favour of a long green dress with blue and white flowers on it. Her hands were sweaty as the Uber pulled up to the café Calum had suggested, and something in the back of Lizzie’s mind suggested it wasn’t just from the weather. She’d always been an anxious person, but she’d gotten a handle on it recently; this whole LA debacle had brought it back with a vengeance.
Calum was waiting for her just in front of the café, dark wayfarer sunglasses covering his eyes and his phone in his hand as he leant up against the brick wall beside the café door. He was wearing a grey hoodie and jeans, and nobody coming in or out of the café seemed to pay him any attention; but then again maybe people of Calum’s level of fame were just part of the furniture around here. It was near to Hollywood, after all.
“Hey, thanks for agreeing to meet me.” Lizzie’s voice wasn’t overly loud, but it still made Calum jump as he looked up from his phone at her.
“Of course, of course. I know I sound like a broken record, but we really are excited for you to do this piece. The new album era is something I’ve been looking forward to for a while, and - “ Calum began, smiling warmly at Lizzie, who cut him off by pulling open the café door.
“Before you start getting all meaningful and quotable on me, shall we get a coffee and take a seat?”
“A woman after my own heart. Let’s do it. Pro-tip, the brownies here are to die for.”
The café was bustling, but most of the patrons seemed to be lining up for takeaway orders. Calum stepped ahead of Lizzie and slipped into a booth towards the back, near a frosted window, greeting the wait staff by name as he went. Lizzie scurried after him, apologising as she accidentally bumped into a tall man with her shoulder bag in her haste and he glared at her. Guess not everyone was as friendly as Calum, then. She slid into the booth opposite Calum, pulling out her notebook and phone as she went.
“Is it okay if I record this? I’m not very good at taking notes.”
“Straight into it, LL? At least let a man have his coffee first.” Calum deadpanned, and Lizzie felt her face fall before she realised he was joking with her.
“Of course, sorry. Let’s order. The brownies, you said? How big are they?” Lizzie pasted a smile onto her face, grabbing for the menu on the table in front of her.
“I have it on good authority that they’re perfectly Lizzie-sized. Calum-sized, too - a real multipurpose snack.” Calum was teasing her now, but also being completely serious, as he got the attention of a waitperson who came over to welcome them and take their orders. A skinny latté for Lizzie, an iced coffee for Calum, and a warmed up chocolate brownie with a side of coconut yogurt for them each. They fell into easy conversation, about the weather, and Calum’s neighbourhood, and the other pieces Lizzie had written, almost forgetting why they were there in the first place. When their order of coffees and brownies arrived, Lizzie suddenly snapped out of her feeling of ease when she had to push her notebook and phone over on the table and remember that she was supposed to be interviewing Calum Hood, 5SOS bassist, not catching up with Calum Hood, her Year 9 science lab partner.
“Now that you’ve got your coffee, can I start recording?” Lizzie asked timidly, as she took a bite out of her brownie and audibly groaned at how heavenly it tasted.
“Depends. Will your brownie orgasm be mentioned in the article?” Could Calum say anything that wasn’t teasing her? Damn it.
“Maybe. Perhaps I’ll do a twitter thread of my trip food highlights, given that the profile piece will be under embargo until the album comes out.” Lizzie deadpanned right back, earning a smile and a small chuckle from Calum.
Lizzie hit record on her phone’s voicenote app, sliding the phone into the centre of the table. She flipped open her notebook to the page marked “Calum”, and she could see Calum trying to read her writing upside down.
“No spoilers, mate. I’ve got a strategy here.” Lizzie mused, angling her notebook so it was harder for Calum to see as he raised his hands in mock surrender.
“Well then, Ms Lawson from Junkee Australia, do your worst.” He flashed her a grin, before taking a sip of his coffee followed by a bite of his brownie (sans any groaning… that must only be a first-time brownie thing).
“So, in our chat yesterday, it was mentioned that this next album is, in some ways, a letter to your homeland, and a reflection on your journeys so far as individual artists as well as being 5SOS collectively. For you, as Calum Hood, what’s the main contribution or perspective that you feel you’ve brought to this album, and the band?” Lizzie saw a flicker of something in Calum’s eyes as she shifted into journalist mode easily, but he only paused for another sip of coffee before answering.
“I think at this point, my main contribution is balancing the collective contributions in the room. I have a lot to say, and I do a lot of songwriting, but I also think the others would agree that I’m also quite observant, so I can read a lot into things they’re saying, or not saying, and bring it out of them into the music. We’ve known each other for almost half our lives at this point, so we know each other better than anyone else, but when we work with other co writers and things like that it can be hard to feel entirely comfortable with the vulnerability you need to bring into writing a song or telling a particular story that day. I’ve got the rep as the strong, silent, shy type, I know - “ Calum paused and returned the soft smile Lizzie was giving him, as she nodded encouragingly.
“But in interviews, when I’m being asked to explain myself and validate my artistic choices, I’m immediately more defensive and protective of it, because there’s something magical about the writing room, and the vulnerability that can only exist in that context when we’re songwriting, and creating that art. The end product, which is the song or the album or whatever, conveys the emotions in a way that I could never say them with words, and the beautiful thing is that so many people can listen to it and relate to it in ways that I’d never considered before. But that’s the power of it, you know? We make these songs to express ourselves, and fulfil our creative outlets, but it extends beyond that, and that’s the part that gets me.” Calum finished speaking and reached for another sip of his coffee.
“Right. The magic exists in the studio, and on the stage, and in individual people’s lives when they listen to the music wherever they are in the world, and it’s the connecting thread that brings you together with your fans, a moment that you can share even if you never meet.”
“Exactly, it’s the universal experience, and everyone has their own interpretation of what it means to them. Pisses me off when people try and dig to find out who we wrote a certain song about, or whatever. Sometimes it is a specific person or a moment, other times I make shit up to suit the vibe of a chord progression or a concept someone’s brought to the table. It’s a juicier headline if we name and shame, but it’s not fair to the person I’m writing about, especially if they don’t have a similar outlet for a right of reply, and it’s also irrelevant, because my meaning behind a song could be completely different to yours, but that doesn’t make it less valid.” Calum shrugs as he speaks, his tone calm and nonchalant.
“Makes sense. The music can exist as art, and be open to interpretation, like everything in life. And with this album, and reflecting on your homeland… what does that mean, for you? Because 5SOS have lived almost their entire adult lives overseas, so I know it must be hard to self-determine a cultural identity that’s so strongly linked to somewhere you haven’t lived for so long.” Lizzie asks, munching down another bite of brownie.
Calum cocks his head to the side and rolls his bottom lip into his mouth, and Lizzie feels a lump rise in her throat. Had she phrased the question wrong? Was he mad? Had she struck a nerve? Fuck.
“Sorry, we don’t have to - I mean, we can keep discussing the album in a different way if you’d prefer -” Lizzie started babbling, and she froze when Calum reached across the table and rested on hers reassuringly.
“Breathe, Lawson. I just need a minute to think about a deep and meaningful response to your question. You’re fine.” Calum was speaking softly, and there was an apology of sorts in his eyes when Lizzie glanced over at him. She was about to ask him something else, when a waitress came over to check on how everything was going with their orders and offered a second round of coffees and Calum withdrew his hand from the table as he ordered another iced coffee to go, times two.
“If you could have it ready to go in about an hour, that’d be great.” Calum flashed the waitress a smile, and she shot him a wink as she headed back to the counter to update his order.
“A whole ‘nother hour? You spoil me, Mr Hood.” Lizzie joked, downing the last of her coffee and desperately hoping to avoid any awkwardness in her remaining interview time with Calum.
“Anything for a fellow Australian, mate. To answer your question, it’s strange, because yes I’ve never lived there full time as an adult, but there’s something about your home country and your hometown that stays with you, no matter where you go or how long you’re gone. Obviously, for me, my sister lives overseas, and neither of my parents were raised in Australia, but it still means a lot to me, because it’s home, you know? The industry there is… interesting, but I still think that if we didn’t have the background we all have as individuals and the band, there’s certainly a lot of decisions we’ve made and ways we’ve gone about things in our careers that are heavily influenced by our upbringings and the mindsets we all have from that experience.”
“Home is where the heart is, right?” Lizzie offers, thumbing her notebook absently.
“It’s true. But it’s also refreshing to go back and escape it all a bit, you know? None of my friends at home really give a shit about Calum from 5SOS. They just like hanging out with Cal, which is nice.” Calum shrugs, clasping his hands together on the table in front of him.
“Just Cal? Not cool guy Cal? C Dizzle Swizzle?” Lizzie bit back a grin, remembering the multitude of nicknames Cal had garnered over the years.
“Look, cool guy Cal is just my constant state of being. C Dizzle might make an appearance if I’ve had one too many, but either way, they’re just happy to see me. Or happy to tell me some home truths that I haven’t heard, or wanted to hear, so that’s important too. You can’t live in LA for as long as we have without having a good support crew to keep us grounded, you know? Even if some of the ones who mean the most to us are on the other side of the planet.” There was something in Calum’s eyes again as Lizzie looked at him, and she could tell it was more than what he was trying to say for the sake of the profile interview.
She swallowed down one final bite of the heavenly brownie, and turned the page to find her next question. Lizzie couldn’t entertain the idea of asking Calum why Michael was mad at her, because it would break the air of professionalism she was desperate to maintain; also, she wasn’t entirely sure he’d even tell her. Calum and Michael had been inseparable in their school days, and Lizzie knew that their bond and sense of loyalty no doubt ran even deeper now than then, given all of their shared experiences, trials and tribulations to date. But Calum had always been so kind and patient with her, whether she’d accidentally ruined their Year 9 science experiment, or she’d nearly thrown up on his shoes at the Year 11 formal after party, or when Michael had stormed out of the studio a few days ago and he offered her his time for the first solo interview. Lizzie brushed off the train of thought, and continued with her interview questions for Calum.
The conversation flowed easily, and Lizzie could already feel the profile starting to come together in her mind. She jotted down a handful of notes on how to adapt her questions for Luke and Ashton based on Calum’s responses, and before they realised how long they’d been chatting, the waitress returned with Calum’s two takeaway iced coffees.
Lizzie asked the waitress for the bill, but Calum waved her off.
“I’ve got it, Lizzie. Don’t stress.”
“But I can expense it! I have a receipts app, and everything!” Calum laughed at how excited Lizzie seemed at the concept of submitting a work expense claim.
“Okay, fine. You win this round.”
Lizzie pressed stop on her phone recording, and reached for her bag to slide her notebook in. The waitress returned with the bill, and Lizzie handed her travel bank card over, drumming her hands absentmindedly on the table while she waited for the waitress to come back with her card and the receipt.
“Lizzie?” Her head snapped up as Calum spoke.
“He’s not… I know it seems like he’s really mad at you, but he’s not.” It took a moment for Lizzie to register what Calum was saying.
“He’s not mad at me? He refused to speak to me and stormed out of the room the first chance he got, but he’s not mad? Right.” Lizzie couldn’t help but sound bitter as she spoke.
“I can’t speak for him, but I know him. He’s not mad, he’s just hurt about everything.” Lizzie could tell Calum was being very careful with his choice of words, and she eyed him curiously across the table.
“What does he possibly have to be hurt about? He’s the one that -” Lizzie catches herself halfway through her sentence, and squeezes her eyes shut as she inhales deeply.
“Here’s your receipt and your card back, miss. Thanks so much for visiting us today, have a lovely day!” Lizzie blinks and squints up at the waitress, who hands back her card and a paper receipt. Lizzie mumbles her thanks, and goes to stand up and slide out of the booth, and Calum follows her out of the café.
“Lizzie, I didn’t mean to upset you -” Calum’s apologetic tone had Lizzie spinning on her heel to face him once they’re through the doors of the café.
“You didn’t, Calum. It’s fine. I’m here to do a job, and I appreciate your time today, I really do. Michael and I… I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it, okay? I know it won’t be easy, but for now, I just want to focus on getting the best interview content I can from you all. That’s why I’m here.” Lizzie wrings her hands nervously, and she can feel how sweaty her palms are.
“Is that the only reason you’re here?” Calum’s tone isn’t teasing, or harsh. It’s genuine, curious, soft. He’s not moving as he stands in front of Lizzie and gazes down at her from his full height.
Before Lizzie can answer, Calum’s phone starts to ring, and he casts her another glance before stepping away to answer it. While he’s chatting to whoever’s on the other end of the line, Lizzie decides to order herself an Uber and make her way back to the hotel so she can make a start on transcribing the interview with Calum. Because that was why she was here, Lizzie told herself in her head, stubbornly. Didn’t matter about the feelings in her stomach, and the tightness of her chest. She was there to write a profile about a band, nothing more, nothing less.
“I’ve got to go and meet Ash at the studio, are you all good from here?” Calum’s question broke Lizzie out of her internal dialogue.
“Yep, all good. Thanks again for your time, Cal. I really appreciate it. I think it’s going to be a great piece, and I’m intrigued to see what comes out of the other interviews. All of them.” Lizzie’s pointed tone isn’t lost on Calum, and he grimaces slightly at the fire he seems to have ignited. Ah well. Lizzie and Michael had to sort their shit out sooner or later, right?
Right?
Calum was trying to convince himself as he strolled down the street towards his car, pondering if he’d made things better or worse between Michael, his best mate through almost his entire life, and Lizzie, the girl that he’d been sure Michael would love forever, but had walked away from in a shadow of hurt, betrayal, and disbelief. The girl that apparently had no idea Michael felt that way, or that if he did, it wasn’t justified. Someone’s side of the story just wasn’t adding up, but Calum wasn’t sure whose it was. Not anymore.
