Vent ; reasons why my grandmother will never be alone with my baby

- Constantly disrespects me as a person and mother, even in my own home

- tried to give Maggie water, we told her not to because her Dr said no water before 6 months. After that she threw a tantrum and kept trying to give her it just to spite us.

- told us our “rules” don’t apply at her house and that she’ll do whatever she wants with HER baby. All because we told her we weren’t allowing bedsharing before a year old. 

-implied I was a bad mother because I watch horror movies with Maggie in the room. It’s literally only when she’s not pay attention to the TV or is taking her nap. 

- Told me “Kids don’t get hit enough now a days, that’s what wrong with this new generation. We hit you guys and you all turned out fine.” I have TRAMUA and can’t look at wooden spoons, and two of my siblings are felons 🙃 yes, we turned out fine. 

- “You’re babying her too much, she’s going to end up a spoiled brat.” After she rolled over and knocked her head on the bar of her playpen and started crying, so I picked her up to make sure she was okay. 

- “Shell learn to keep that tongue in her mouth if I have a say.” you wont. I promise. Also, she’s a baby, a teething baby at that! They stick their tongues out. 

- “If it weren’t for me giving birth to your mother, you wouldn’t be here. So I should have a say in how she’s raised.” Because I told her she wasn’t Maggie’s doctor after she berated me for not giving her solids before 6 months. 

- Spanked my nephew because “I’ll give you something to cry about.” He was tired and fussy because he missed his nap, which was 100% her fault. He’s also a little under 3 yrs old. ALSO HITTING A CHILD IS NEVER OKAY. 

- Got upset with Maggie and me because she cried every time she held her. 

- Told me I was being a bad sister and mother for keeping Maggie from seeing my siblings. We were very clear with everyone that we would not be taking Maggie to see them until they came to see her first, especially because my brother hasn’t even come to visit me once in 6 yrs and wasn’t even at my wedding. They keep flaking out on visiting. It’s not my responsibility to make sure they have a relationship with her. 

These were just from her last two visits.

I'm starting to get comfortable at my new job which is nice. There isn't a lot of wet lab work to do rn but I feel like I've put myself thru enough of an immuno-crash course to be able to participate in discussions and it does truly seem like they want to mentor me! One of my bosses presented some data today that was rlly interesting too. I'm feeling more competent in the subject matter and starting to feel like I could do well in med school, not just phd grad studies. I feel a lot happier here vs my last job even tho it's been haphazard w my boss out of town for the past month. I am so bright eyed and bushy tailed!!!! I want to go to conferences and learn MORE and I'm really excited for when my work on various projects actually gets rolling. The commute also isnt that bad and it's crazy nice being on a university campus again. It's HUGE and theres so much good food close by. Im also very comforted by the fact that a lot of the surgeons are like. Introverted and not crazy about socializing (I knew that lab people were like that but not doctors). Im awkward but so are lots of cool people!

Also next time i get to have my actual first one on one meeting w my boss im gonna see if there's more stuff I can do/if I can observe some of the surgeries....

Saw a post talking about this and didn't want to derail it, but like, honestly, at this point, I'm becoming less and less tolerant of people acting like straight/cis passing privilege is a real, very serious thing that needs to be taken into consideration every time someone speaks on queer issues bcs I swear to god the only time I ever see it actually brought up is when someone is trying to deny someone else a seat at the table. Like first it was used against bi+ people to explain why we're not queer unless we're in a same gender relationship, and then it was used to shit all over ace and aro people for not being "visibly queer", then they turned on nonbinary people who "look cis", and now I see people throwing it at trans men for some reason like???? This is legit becoming an exclusionist dogwhistle to me. Any merit to this concept is completely obliterated by assholes who are so addicted to playing oppression olympics they're meticulously crafting pokemon type advantage charts to categorize all the gays based on who actually has "real" problems and who doesn't, it's agonizing.

Like putting "straight/cis passing privilege" up on the shelf next to "comphet" until people can learn how to use it in a way that doesn't invalidate someone else's queerness.
