Regarding Tommy (AKA Stop hating him for the “Begins” episodes)

So I’ve been seeing a TON of hate for Tommy specifically because of his behaviour in the ‘Begins’ episodes and how he “shouldn’t be forgiven” so I’m getting fed up and decided to to a TIMELINE of Tommy & why we don’t need to be spoon fed his ‘redemption’ because we saw it across 10-ish years of flashbacks in the Begins episodes and can learn to understand that some stuff can just be implied with storytelling rather than treating the audience like babies and spelling it out for them. I will be starting with his first chronological appearance NOT his first on-screen appearance.

Starting Approx. 2005-2006 2x12 “Chimney Begins” now I’m not sure exactly what dates the episode here but google tells me it’s set around here, If I’m wrong let me know.

This was the big episode of Tommy being an asshole, I will not deny he was an asshole. He was one of the primary assholes of this episode along with the old captain. Let’s look at this episode with what we know about Tommy now, not what we knew then.

Tommy was a closeted gay man in a male-led, white-led field (presumably gay, we haven’t had his label yet) working under a captain we know is Homophobic, Sexist, and Racist. He also was a white man in a white male field back in 2005, prejudice was still a huge thing in 2005 (and still is but we’re not here to talk about that) and this episode shows this well, because it had to fit with the ‘times’. Tommy was an aggressor to begin with Im not going to deny this, but do you know who was also there, standing by and watching the rest of the 118 treat Chimney like shit for MONTHS? Eli! Yes lovey Eli who eventually helped get Chim into the field and let him stay with him in Boston. Yes he ended up being a good guy, but that doesn’t excuse the months he spent staying quiet watching the 118 mistreat Chim. You’ll see this theme pop up again later, funnily enough. Eventually we see Tommy and Chim become civil, after Chimney saves his life. He goes on to befriend Chimney, telling him his favourite movie is Love Actually (that’s fruity) amongst other things.

Fast forward to somewhere between 2009-2010 2x09 “Hen Begins” aka the next time we see Tommy chronologically and the first time we meet him in the show. We know a rough timeline as Sal says his girlfriend took him to see the new Twilight movie, and they reference the Edward vs Jacob, which means it’s most likely New Moon or Eclipse as that was more heavily a marketing thing for those two than the first one. This is also the first time Tommy is implied to be gay (He doesn’t deny the accusation and instead jokes about kissing Sal/Chimney) Now at this point in time I know this probably was not planned, but is something to look back at.

Tommy is this episode steps back from being an aggressor, he is still working under Gerrard and still closeted. He is still a part of the problem, but other than being present in the episode and in the scenes where Sal and Gerrard acted as aggressors, he didn’t actually contribute verbally to the mistreatment of Hen. The primary aggressor for Hen was Gerrard and remained to be Gerrard throughout the episode even when her co-workers saw her doing good things. And going back to Eli in Chimneys episode, guess who was also a bystander to Hens mistreatment, filling a similar role to Hen that Eli filled? CHIMNEY. He stood back for also presumably months, didn’t defend Hen against their co-workers, and just let what happened to him happen to her. Then, at the end of the episode it’s revealed multiple members of her team submitted complaints against their captain for the mistreatment of Hen, I’m willing to bet that he was one of those people, him, Chim, and even potentially Sal as he was less of an ass by the end. By the end of her episode we know they are now friendly at work and he thinks she’s a good firefighter.

Skip forward to 2014-ish, 2x16 “Bobby Begins Again.” We immediately see the team meshing, Chim, Hen, Tommy, and even Sal. 9 Years have passed since he met Chimney, and 4-ish since Hen and it’s implied they’re a friendly unit, Tommy is still closeted, and has been working under a rotating number of captains (six to be exact), but has clearly become a better, and more accepting person, the world is changing and he isn’t being held back with the times. He goes out for drinks with Hen & Chimney, laughs with them, has an overall good time being their friend and seeming enjoying working under Bobby for another 4 years, we even see them smash his face into a cake at a surprise leaving party they’ve thrown him. We know Buck took his place at the 118 which was not long before S1 began, so we’re assuming he left the 118 2017/2018.

This is the last time we see Tommy until 7x03, presumably set in 2023/2024 “Capsized”, a whole canonical 16-18 years after we first meet him, and 6 years since he left the 118. In those 6 years we know he:

A) is still friendly with Chimney, we know from 2x14 when he phones him to drop the fire retardant on the house. He is also mentioned to still be in contact in 3x16

B) Has come out/discovered his sexuality.

C) Is obviously not bigoted, or at least as much as he was back in 2005-ish.

In terms of Hen we can assume they haven’t really stayed “friends” since Tommy left, as she states in Capsized that she forgot he worked there. She worked with him for 8-ish years, I’ve worked with people for that length of time and don’t talk to them now, doesn’t mean I hate them, we just don’t really have reason to talk anymore. I just think their friendship was more a “we’re work friends” kind of relationship rather than a “we’re in each other’s lives” one, which is a completely normal and valid relationship. Whereas with Chim we know they’ve remained at least acquaintances to chat, and friends enough that Tommy would risk both his life and job to save Bobby.

At this point in the timeline it’s been approximately CANONICALLY 16-18 years since we met Tommy, and the fandom is still asking for his character to be held accountable for things he said all those years ago, when clearly in the canon of the show has been forgiven. At this point in the show I really don’t think we need to be spoonfed this narrative, it would feel clunky and weird to see an apology on screen for something that’s clearly been addressed off screen. It would frankly be a waste of the limited airtime we have this season.

I also think it’s super important to remember that Tommy wasn’t planned that far in advance, we know he was bought back by Minear because he wanted the person who was part of Bucks coming out to be someone the audience had already met before & Lou was both available and willing to do it. If they had been planning this exact storyline since season 2, maybe Tommy would have been portrayed differently, who knows.

I get we love Buddie and we want Buddie so much, I am not and never will jump ship from Buddie, I love that Tommy is Bucks first boyfriend, I just hope Eddie gets to be his last.

I’m also super glad we’re getting Bucks coming out separately from Eddies potential future coming out, I am on the (seemingly) small majority that thinks that would have been way too much to happen all at once, and also the characters deserve to have their own coming out stories not to be lumped together.

so yeah. TLDR; Tommy has evolved over 16-18 years, 10 years of which we saw across the Begins episodes, and if we want to be spoonfed his accountability for his behaviour in the begins episode, we should also be asking the same from Eli and Chim.

- okay this scene between maddie and buck afterwards is actually so important to me, i love their ability to communicate, and how buck openly admits that he doesn’t know if he meant to hurt eddie or not, and that he was angry and lashed out, and maddie’s reaction to it :( “that’s not how you get someone’s attention”

- “i guess i was trying to get his attention” buck is the representative of the “i don’t know why i do the things i do until tons of self reflection after the fact” club, same im the president actually

- i do love that we get to watch him try and figure out why he acts and feels the way he does in real time! even at the end he still doesn’t entirely know until tommy is in his face staring at his lips

- the stutter is back 🫶

- “evan…” STOP THE WAY HE SAYS IT THAT TIME MAKES ME GIGGLE I CANT

- this entire scene drives me crazy btw i can literally pick it apart piece by piece… but the way he smiles throughout it makes my heart go akrjeidjdjsjd

- the chemistry is fucking IMMACULATE btw!! the flirting is so natural and it shows through buck being oblivious about it!! like brother no one stands that close to each other

- buck figuring out how he feels AS he speaks!!! poor boy is trying to catch up as fast as he can

- everything about the “okay” after tommy says “i can teach you”… the smile, the eye squint, the head tilt, like oh my GOD

- the way the tone changes when buck says “good” my GOD, the way his face drops as he comes to the realization that maybe it was about tommy the whole time

- the “cause trying to get your attention has been kinda exhausting” punches me in the gut EVERY TIME I WATCH THIS LIKE FUCK OH MY GOD BUCK LIKES MEN FR? and the way he says it GOD, like i said, he’s literally figuring this out as the words come out of his mouth (“i guess so”)

- okay my ONE nitpick about the kiss scene is that tommy grabs his chin, and then when it cuts it’s the two fingers under the chin, it’s inconsistent and i think i like the chin grab better

- the absolute STUNNED look in bucks eyes after the kiss!!! as the perfect oliver stark put it: he’s found something he’s been missing for a long time

- tommy is so worried in the split second before buck tells him that it was okay

- the wordless nod after tommy asks if it was okay THIS MEANS SO MYCH TO ME

- you can FEEL the sense of relief and wholeness radiating off of buck

- “better than fake mouth static” AKSHSISHS

- his eyes following tommy’s lips as he laughs, and then the brief look down like his whole WORLD has just been turned upside down before tommy speaks again

- i am so fucking here for buck being asked out and being stunned by it

- the stutter again 🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶

- tommy’s smile as he leaves like tee hee ur kinda cute

- the entire of his expressions at the end. there’s panic, there’s confusion, there’s happiness OLIVER STARK THE MAN THAT YOU ARE !!!!

in conclusion: this is everything i wanted and more, the brain rot is everywhere, i cannot escape this episode

I'm rewatching Hen Begins for research purposes (fic writing) and I can say that we can date this by the conversation about the one firefighter getting dragged to see a Vampire movie by his GF.

More interestingly, Tommy expresses that he doesn't see the appeal in Kristen Stewart (Hen however does appreciate KS)...and then there's a joke about Tommy being "Team Jacob".

And like I don't expect an adult male to know Twilight even when it was popular, but it's just funny that it's either he doesn't get the reference/joke and the implication or that he's pretending he doesn't get it. And then when Chim explains it, he just makes a kissy face at them.

Obviously they didn't know Tommy was queer when they wrote this script/shot this but it's just interesting to look back at it and think about a Tommy who was maybe somewhat aware of his interest in guys...and just a Tommy who was still figuring himself out sort of like Buck is in present day.

I needed a couple of hours to sort through my thoughts about 7x04 - because I was busy screaming, crying, kicking my feet giggling - but now I just gotta say, before I dive into any details: I AM SO INCREDIBLY HAPPY.

As a bisexual myself who realized she‘s always been bi at the ripe age of 30 and after already being very married to the very male love of her life (which wasn’t at all changed by the realization), seeing bi characters having their ‚oh‘ moment later in life than in their teens is SO VALIDATING.

I love how yes, there have always been hints and it makes sense for the character but they actually gave Buck the space to find out this new thing about himself. They showed an adult man figuring this important part of his identity out when he was ready for it. Without it being induced by trauma or relationship troubles. That is so so so meaningful and so so so beautiful at the same time. I legit CRIED LIKE A BABY watching Buck‘s face go ‚oh I see‘ after the kiss. He just landed in his body as the penny of truth dropped and he seemed so content it made me squeek. I love seeing our golden retriever carving his place out in the world and discovering how to fully embrace all of himself.

And I love he gets to do it with Tommy.

Yes, I am a buddie shipper and that hasn‘t changed. However, whichever way the show moves now, bi Buck means the world to me. And the way they are telling the story with Tommy in a gentle, realistic way, I hope we get more of that. Hell I even really like their vibe together. Tommy seems like he‘ll be okay holding the hand of a baby queer and help him dip his toe into the water. Wherever that leads, it was a genius decision to introduce him to Buck‘s story.

Now for the details:

This episode wasn‘t only beautiful, it was also hilarious. THE TOP GUN REFERENCE HAD ME HOLLERING. At that point I knew some queerness was gonna happen because you don’t make the queerest reference in movie history without reason. Also absolutely loved the sewer conversation (hooray for Ravi by the way, I missed that little dude) and the emotions Buck goes through during the conversation.

Buck‘s jealousy is as stupid as it is adorable and I have to say I did find Eddie the slightest bit unfair. He knows Buck has abandonment issues and still doesn‘t register that he might need some reassurance. Yes okay, I get he wanted a little payback for the Nathalia ‚she sees me‘ bs, but come on, Eds, cut the poor man some slack.

The acting in the episode? Chef‘s kiss. Oliver was amazing, but I don‘t see Lou getting enough credit. He already planted his visible interest in Buck in 7x03 nicely in that one tiny interaction at the end and he really delivered on the flirty banter in this episode. Oliver, meanwhile, has done such a great job at showing the gradual change in Buck and the nervousness and the curiosity and hopefulness it tugged on all of my heartstrings. Deserving of an Emmy-nom. Great Job, loved every second.

Maddy and Chim very also amazing in the ep, especially Chim clocking immediately why Buck really brought him to basketball. It‘s gonna be interesting to see their reaction to Buck‘s truth - if he‘s ready to share it yet.

The only thing that bugged me was that Athena‘s storyline felt very rushed. I liked the theme and I think it hinted at important conversations, but it resolved the conflict too fast and too easy - making said issues seem smaller than they are. I struggle to believe that they would let a POC kid off the hook that easily. I wish this was realistic, but I doubt it is.

Bachelor call was great, loved gossipy Josh (by god, I want more Josh, I love that goofball) and Chim going full fanboy.

Can‘t wait for next week and hope we get more Hen and Bobby there! I missed them this ep.

I am so excited to see where Buck‘s story arch will go next. I‘ll explode with happiness if it slowly drifts towards buddie, but I won’t be mad if it doesn‘t happen or if it does happen and the show takes its time to get there. A slow buildup for this would be chef‘s kiss and I have a lot of trust in ABC and the writers that this is how they will do it, if Buddie happens.

All in all: Favorite episode of all the series for me, worthy 100th episode, will watch a billion times, made me all warm and fuzzy and giggly.

ok. i'm rewatching 911 and am in season 2 currently SO for reasons (aka i'm writing and why would i actually write the story when i can do weird research stuff instead). tommy timeline thoughts.

lou was 33-34 in 2018 when season 2 was being filmed/aired, portraying tommy in 2010 (hen begins) and 2005 (chimney begins). assuming the show is mostly present day at this point (lol) that would put tommy (if he was lou's age at the start) between 47-52 now. i guess with some fudging he could be like anywhere in the 42-50 range but any younger than that and his backstory wouldn't really make sense if he was in the 118 by 2005, had presumably gone through training, been at the firehouse for a while, and been in the army prior to all that. i think. i don't know how long "being in the army" takes.

ALSO facts i've picked back up on so far that i will probably want to reference at some point

chimney begins (2005) they reference tommy having a girlfriend (gerrard going "so when's your girlfriend coming to make us dinner" or something similar). also his favourite movie is love actually which i have never seen but it's adorable that he likes romcoms

hen begins (2010) they have the conversation about twilight and that other guy makes the joke about tommy being "team jacob" and he reacts with the jokey kiss instead of being weird about it. i am trying SO HARD not to read into the way he pauses for a second before reacting because there's no way they had this planned back then 😂

i haven't gotten back up to bobby begins again but that's when he leaves the 118, will add to this when i get there

broken (2019) he's with the 217 and chim calls him to bring the water plane to the cul de sac that exploded

some time in the middle here he's moving to lafd air ops

2024 he comes to help with the hurricane

this is still very much still in development in my brain, and i hesitate to go too hard with direct comparisons because, aside from the whole thing where chim and stiles are two unique characters in two very different shows, they're ALSO at totally different life stages. but. because i cannot help myself. i made a list. it's very incomplete and ranges from similar traumas to silly, superficial things.

consider this:

quippy guys with trauma who use sarcasm/wit/humor to deflect, hide their feelings, and/or diffuse situations

shared pain of watching their mothers die slowly when they were young (yeah this one hurt sorry)

subjected to a brother figure being absolutely sickeningly stupidly in love (scott/allison, scott/isaac, scott/kira; buck/eddie)

run around playing detective (see: stiles + all of teen wolf; chim + jonah arc; chim + treasure hunting episode)

nabbed by bad guys (gerard argent; jonah greenway)

make movie references that they think should be common knowledge and are continually exasperated upon discovering the people around them don’t know what they’re talking about (for stiles, it’s scott and star wars; for chim, it’s buck and like everything other than backdraft).

there's also the way i can picture stiles in Chim Situations and chim in Stiles Situations. like:

remember in 6x06 when chim TOLD KAREN THAT HEN HAD DIED?? look me straight in the fucking face and tell me stiles wouldn't pull some hilarious off-the-fucking-wall bullshit like that to get two of his besties back together. (we're gonna ignore the part where allison actually did die. sorry. that's. god. sorry.)

you know how stiles is, like, delighted, actually, to find out scott is a werewolf? he researches, he Knows Things, etc etc. tell me that wouldn't be chim? chim would have a fucking FIELD DAY!

if the love of stiles's life disappeared on him, he would absolutely drop everything and pull a months-long roadtrip to find them and convince them that they are loved and not a danger to their child. their uh. hypothetical child. no, i'm not thinking of eli hale why would you even insinuate such a thing i would never—

alternatively, i could totally see chim showing up to, i don't know, hen's house in the middle of the night and being all like, "the cops found half of a body in the woods, let's go and see if we can find the other half!!" (in this situation karen is melissa. not in a weird way, just in the way that i can picture chim slipping in through a window and karen startled and swinging a baseball bat like CHIM what are you DOING here why'd you come in through a window? and chim's like you locked the front door! and karen's like YEAH EXACTLY.)

(my life and all my earthly possessions for a treasure hunt episode but with teen wolf characters)

hmm. something something kevin following chim into firefighting only to end up dying on the job / scott following stiles into the woods only to end up being bitten by a werewolf. (not that either of them are to blame for it, but like. you know. i imagine they might have some guilt complexes going on.)

something about the way season 1 chim wants so badly to be seen a certain way by tatiana...the way he shows people what he thinks they want to see vs who he actually is because he thinks they won't want who he actually is...something about that feels so true to stiles's character in a way i can't totally put into words.

on a slightly more serious note, i just wanted to say that one of my favorite activities for enrichment in the enclosure (tm) is blorbo overlaying, wherein i take characters from one obsession and think about how i can categorize them based on characters from another obsession (*taylor swift voice* i have this thing, it's autism)(anyway). as a result, i've spent a lot of time thinking how the 9-1-1 characters could be smushed into teen wolf characters.

my knee-jerk urge was to see how much stiles and buck matched; yeah, they're both part of the most popular ship in their respective fandoms, but there's also the adhd thing, the knowledge of lots of different facts thing, the jeep thing, the whole "my worth lies in what i can do for others" thing...i can make a case. but for me, this ultimately breaks down when i think about how buck is just so...genuine and kind? he’s earnest. he’s gentle. the man's a himbo (affectionate). stiles is...very much Not. stiles is ALSO (when he hasn’t been, as one might say, sandpapered by the fandom) prickly. he’s got an inner circle that he’ll protect with his life. if you’re not in that circle, you’re just not really on his radar, unless you’re trying to join that circle, and then he’s suspicious until he’s sorta like vetted you.

(this is totally an aside, but it's the same reason why i've never really thought grumpy/sunshine works for sterek. derek is grumpy, sure, but stiles sure as fuck isn't sunshine.)

ANYWAY. i don’t think that’s chimney, exactly (i think he's probably a little sillier and friendlier), but i do think he and stiles both have a similar edge to them. like: see me. no wait. don't look. i'll make you see me. i'll make a snarky comment and draw attention to myself. but don't look directly at me. i'll talk and talk but i won't say anything real. they had to be the grown up in their home too young. they're terrified of losing their people, because their people are so fucking important to them, and because they know what it feels like, to lose someone, and if it happens again, it'll wreck them. they've got anxiety buried under three movie references and a wry side-eye and an exasperated, flailing hand gesture. they're fiercely loyal and protective.

uh. well. i guess that's all (lying LYING but i'm cutting myself off here). also, i feel like i didn't quite do chim justice so. sorry for that. and here's hoping for a chim-centric storyline (breakdown era?!) in our near future. <3

Hen gives him a hand, and Eddie nods his thanks without missing a beat of his tirade. “Nope, nope, nope, you are not getting away with this, we all said we'd dress up—”

“You’re in jeans, and a letterman jacket!”

“And what about these?" Eddie asks, insulted, as he wriggles his fingers and waves his hands in front of Buck's face. Showcasing the costume-gloves he’s wearing that have elongated claws and are covered in fake brown hair.

“Oh my mistake, Mr Hairy-Hands-Basketball Player, but what are you gonna do about it, exactly?” Buck asks, punctuating his fake apology with a challenging grin as he crosses his arms and cocks his head to the side.

“Okay, first of all, I’m the original 1985 Michael J Fox 'Teen Wolf'—”

“Classic movie,” Chimney interjects only for Buck to shrug and say, “I haven’t seen it.”

(and regardless of his lack of exposure to cult classics, Buck’s still highly amused at the way Eddie had skipped shaving this morning, and had purposefully mussed up his hair to complete the look. Although it's giving off less of an Eighties-Teenage-Werewolf-vibe and more of a just-got-laid-in-the-bathroom- kind of vibe…

....not that, ahem, Buck's thinking about that kind of thing…)

“—And second of all," Eddie says with conviction, followed by a thinly veiled threat; “You’ll see.”

And with that Eddie heads away from the group and over to the bar where he starts an animated conversation with the bartender. He occasionally points back over his shoulder to the group—Buck specifically—and at one point there’s even money changing hands. What the hell…?

Buck gets distracted when Hen shows him a picture of Denny and Chris in their costumes that Karen had sent but Eddie's intentions are made clear a few moments later when he sneaks back over to the table, and throws a white sheet over Buck’s head. He must have commandeered it from the bar's back room and he’s even take the time to cut out two holes for eyes to complete the look.

"There!" Eddie proclaims, with all the pomp and circumstance of a tipsy man who’s just gotten one over on his best friend. “I give you; Buck the friendly ghost!”

Hen and Bobby cheer, while Chimney drums his hand on the table in a one-handed applause as he takes a swig of his beer.

"No way," Buck says, letting out a surprised splutter, already moving to discard the material, only for Eddie and Chimney to pull it back down again. "This thing stinks!" He whines. “Cap—Bobby, c’mon, help me out here!”

"Sorry kid, but you should have thought of that before you turned up to the Halloween Costume night without a costume." Bobby says with a playful shrug.

Buck opens his mouth to comment on Bobby’s own contribution to the theme—his bright Hawaiian shirt and the name tag that says “My name is… Best Buddy Bobby!” scribbled in sharpie—but as though the older man can sense it, he raises his eyebrow in Buck’s direction. It’s a challenge, a dare.

Buck thinks better of it and instead, says, “boOOoOoOo,” in his best impression of a ghost, sealing his fate as he rolls his eyes and accepts the beer that Eddie had also kindly grabbed for him at the bar.

“That’s the spirit!” Chimney says, before his eyes light up at his own words, and Hen starts to knowingly shake her head. “Get it? The spirit! Ha! Get it?!”

The rest of the 118 groan.

“Yes, Chimney, we get it.”

anon i am so glad you asked, i have many

i think buck likes social media. in his 1.0 days, he was definitely the kind of guy who posted thirst traps and gym selfies and it’s okay because we love him anyway. i like to think he’s grown and developed and now his Instagram feed is lots of pictures of food and sunsets and friends and family and eddie and the back of christophers head, because if i believe anything about these two it’s that neither buck or eddie is down to post pictures of kids on social media (me, projecting my own beliefs? maybe) and christopher can decide that when he’s older. buck loves an insta story. it definitely used to be for the validation but now it’s because he’s got a life he really loves and theres no harm in sharing some of that joy, is there? he also definitely likes an arty coffee pic, or a cheesy selfie. and thirst traps do still make a regular appearance. have you seen him? it would be a crime not to.

eddie doesn’t really use instagram. he’s got about fifteen pictures, total - one of afghanistan, a few good texas sunsets, a few of LA, and okay, sure, some of buck - because sometimes eddie likes to remind his meagre following he’s got a hot boyfriend. sue him. he doesn’t write captions and if he does they’re what buck refers to as dad captions - a corny joke or a jumble of nonsensical emojis. eddie has a facebook account but it’s mostly to keep in touch with his army buddies, like their wedding photos, you know how it goes (it’s also because his high school years and his shannon years are up there and deleting it feels like wiping her from the universe)

buck definitely likes tiktok. he saves the recipe videos he finds to send to bobby, and the dumb jokes to chim. there’s usually a link to a tiktok in their work group chat at least once a day and they pretend otherwise but it does cheer them up

buck is def also someone who goes down youtube rabbit holes. eddie like, watches movie reviews or diy videos but buck always starts with like watching a recipe and a few hours later he’s watching a conspiracy theory video about the moon or one of those ‘entire history of’ videos. it’s cute

(eddie mostly thinks social media is silly, frankly, but when he and buck start dating he definitely posts a photo of buck on his insta- no caption, of course. buck keeps his life a lot more private, these days, but he did the worlds most long awaited boyfriend soft launch on his stories. everyone was pleased)

Day 3 of Prompt List: Sweater

Note: I honestly have no idea where this would be placed, probably around season 3 somewhere. The sweater that I'm referring to in the story is going to be at the end because it's a photo so yeah lol here you go

“Buck and Eddie are on their way,” Chimney states, putting away his phone. They had texted the group chat to let the entire team know because they all were hanging out at a bar. Bobby, Chimney, Hen, Buck, and Eddie had the day off, it so happened to be the same day Athena and Maddie got the day off as well.

“Wait, so they’re arriving together?” Hen asks, setting her drink down on the table and giving Chimney—what Maddie likes to call—the Look. She’s seen it a lot whenever Buck and Eddie hang out, it’s the look that Chim and Hen give to one another because those oblivious fools haven’t noticed yet. Maddie hopes that they figure it out soon, so the bet of “when Buck and Eddie get together” the entire fire house put together can end, and so Buck can stop whining to Maddie about it.

Of course, Buck has a crush on his best friend, except instead of coming forth with it he hides it, even though they all know Eddie feels the same way.

“I wonder what’s taking them so long. We all got here 30 minutes ago,” Athena comments, sitting down and handing Bobby the water he asked her to grab for him from the bar.

“Who knows,” Hen takes a sip of her drink, “I’m surprised they’re still coming; I was sure they just would have decided to hang out with one another instead of all of us.”

“What’s surprising is that Eddie’s late, usually he’s the one early or at the least on time to things,” Bobby adds.

“Oh, that’s definitely Buck’s doing, he’s never early to things,” Maddie remarks, drinking her water—she didn’t want to drink, she was going to be the designated driver—and looking over at the entrance.

Right as she does Buck and Eddie walk in and slowly scan around. Buck makes eye contact with Maddie who waves, and he grabs Eddie’s arm to bring him along. She looks at her brother, who looks cheerful as his hand goes from Eddie’s arm to his hand, and after a few seconds he lets go.

“Hey guys,” Buck smiles at everyone before taking a seat across from Maddie. Eddie waves and smiles as well before taking his seat next to Buck.

“Glad you boys can finally join us,” Athena says, drinking from her glass.

“What took so long anyway?” Hen asks while she looks between the two of them. Buck’s face flushes and he looks over to Eddie, who’s just smirking at the table.

He looks back over at Hen, “Oh we uh, just got caught up in watching a movie.”

“Right, a movie,” Chimney comments as he takes a swig of his beer, giving Hen the Look a second time that night.

Maddie wasn’t paying attention too much to what was being said because the moment Eddie had gotten closer, she had seen the sweater he was wearing. It looks oddly familiar to her, but she doesn’t think she’s ever seen him wear it. The sweater is an orangish brown color with small stripes through the fabric. She looks over and sees Bobby staring at it too, clearly, she wasn’t the only one that questioned it.

“Hey Eddie,” Bobby asks, “have you worn that sweater before?” Eddie looks down at it with a puzzled expression.

“I don’t know, it was just in my closet, so I grabbed it.” He responds, looking over at Buck who is trying very hard to stifle a laugh behind his hand.

“Are you doing okay there Buck?” Chimney raises his eyebrow at him, which makes him laugh a little more.

Then Maddie recognizes the sweater, and so does Bobby.

“Oh my god you’re wearing Buck’s sweater!” Maddie exclaims, a big smile on her face. Eddie quickly looks at her before looking down again, the realization rushing over him. Buck does finally laugh, and Eddie smacks him.

“Why didn’t you tell me I was wearing your sweater?”

“Because I thought you knew!” Buck laughs a little more, and Eddie starts to smile.

After a second goes by, “So, you don’t think it’s weird that he’s wearing your sweater, Buck?” Chimney comments, hoping that they would finally realize that bros don’t wear each other’s clothing.

“Uh, no why would that be weird, I thought that’s what boyfriends do?” Buck asks. Both him and Eddie sit there in silence waiting for the shock to wear off and for one of them to react negatively.

But it never comes. Instead, they all start cheering for them (Hen, Chimney, and Maddie sighing, “finally”).

“So, who asked who?” Maddie questions, looking directly at her brother.

“Eddie did, actually,” Buck responds.

“Was it romantic?” Athena asks, and Buck and Eddie glance at one another.

Buck flushes once more, “Yeah, uh, something like that,” he mumbles.

(Extra) Later: “So, who won the bet?” Chimney asks Hen while Eddie is standing close by. They originally were playing darts but as the night went on and more got drunk, they realized pool was probably the safest option.

“What bet?” Eddie asks, watching Buck as he takes his turn.

“Shush, I wasn’t talking to you,” He turns slightly more to Hen, “Who won?”

“Which one are you referring to Chim?” A slightly more sober Hen asks.

“You know, the one of Buck and Eddie.”

“The what?” Eddie questions, but they ignore him.

“Oh yeah, I believe I did,” Hen responds.

“We’ll just have to check our next shift.” Chimney says, walking to the table to take his turn, and Buck walks over to Eddie.

“Did you know they had a bet on us?” Eddie asks.

“Yeah, Maddie mentioned it once or twice,” Buck comments, watching a very drunk Chimney stumble over to Maddie who has a fond expression on her face. Eddie stands there shocked for a second before accepting the fact that his friends made a bet for when they were going to get together. They have bets on everything else, so it kind of made since.

Hey, guys! I promised to be here at least once this weekend and answer some asks. As I’ve been terribly busy with work, a lot has built up in the in box. With over 200 asks to get to, I decided it would be better to take an idea from romanticdrift and do an ask roundup and sort of answer what I have so far. No, I won’t answer all 200 in this post because a lot are very similar. But I’ll be summarizing asks and clearing out my inbox. Many of these are paraphrased, but keeping the original context. Part of me wishes that vmin was real. Another part of me doesn’t want them to be. Don’t get me wrong, I ship them and don’t have a problem with the idea of them being gay and in love. But somehow I really like the idea of them being best friends who just really care deeply about each other. Does that make sense?

That makes perfect sense to me, honestly. I often talk about the value of friendship on this blog and how friendships are just as important as romantic relationships. If vmin have the close bond they do with each other, and it’s totally platonic, it sort of proves that there are friendships out there that have connections just as deep as romantic love.

This is one of the reasons I don’t push the “romantic vmin” agenda too hard. Because their friendship is perfect and ideal if that’s all it is. It really puts the statement “something deeper than friendship” to shame. Because what’s deeper than friendship? In fact, a romance with someone you can’t also consider your best friend doesn’t seem deep at all. It’s almost like “friendship” is what make romantic relationships deep. You know what I mean? You just won’t have the same connection with a romantic partner if you’re not also friends with them. So it’s silly to me how friendships are often devalued.

Regardless of what type of relationship vmin have, I think it’s okay for them to be the model of the type of relationship someone else would want to have. Whether it be with a friend or an s/o. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to have a romantic relationship that matches someone else’s friendship. And, if you don’t think vmin is real but still relate to them as “couple goals” because that’s the kind of relationship you want, then that’s fine. That’s actually sort of the kind of shipper that I am.

These asks were from an anonymous person, but they were two separate asks. So I wanted to specify them as two separate asks in this post, but answer them together.

First things first. Let’s get a few links in here that you can reference to understand my answer a little better if you don’t know the whole story.

Okay. Let’s talk about Tae crying during the performance. I can’t actually say that he really cried, but he did seem to get emotional at the end. It’s a song that’s about a fight that is a big staple in their friendship. I think it’s pretty obvious that there’s more to the dumpling incident that they’re not telling us. I don’t think that’s the first time they would have had such an argument. They probably argue about whether to eat pizza or burgers all the time, and whether they should have dinner first and then watch a movie or watch a movie and then eat dinner.

Just the fact that Chim stated that he had to go and have a drink with Syub after the fight tells us that there was more to the incident than they are telling us. You don’t go and drink yourself drunk because you and your best friend can’t agree on whether to eat dumplings before or after practice.

I think that incident is one of the building blocks of their friendship. I think that it happened at a time they were going through a lot of changes. We know that Chim tends to be pretty possessive, and this was at a time that Tae started having his own schedule because of Hwarang. I think there were a lot of sudden changes to things, and that stressed them out and put some strain on their friendship. And it’s possible that’s entirely wrong.

Either way. It’s pretty clear there’s more to it than dumplings. But we can’t begin to analyze and figure out what it is and expect to be remotely accurate. And quite frankly, no matter how curious any of us may be, it’s none of our business. If they wanted us to know the “obviously more to the story” part of the story, they’d tell us.

And now. I guess I could have handles the two asks separately. But anyway. I’ve already talked about how I think Chim did already know that 4 o’clock was about that incident. So check the interview analysis I linked above for my discussion on that topic. I’m going to be going through my analyses soon and updating them, but that answer will do for now.

You talked about Tae calling Chim on his live but what your thoughts about Tae caling during Ji / kook live. Chim was so unprepared and Kook was laughing about Tae calling and I guess Chim’s reaction to it. Chim didn’t seem to be in the flirting mood. I just wanted to know your thoughts on it.

I believe I have talked about this before somewhere, but I’m not entirely sure. So the live you are referring to is the kimbap making one (x). So, I’m going to reference the Mandago Incident in this answer, and I did an analysis on this live before. I’m going to link to the analysis I made. A link to the last mandago live can be found in that analysis. (x)

During the last mandago that we got, I really got the feeling that Chim wanted to do a live with Tae, but Tae didn’t want to join him. We have Chim being all sour and pouty and even down right petty in that last live, and I sort of got the same vibes from his behavior when Tae called during the kimbap live.

We know that Chim keeps saying he want to do a vlive with Tae, but it never happens. What the real story behind their lack of a live together is, we may never know.

I have a theory about this one, but it is just a theory. It’s probably not even remotely true, and there are thousands of other possibilities than what I’m about to say in regards to this live.

I think that it’s possible that the Ji / kook kimbap making live was supposed to be a vmin kimbap making live. Or vmin / kook, but I’m leaning further away from that option for this analysis to make a little more sense in relation to the mandago one (which I compare it to).

This analysis is assuming (1) that the kimbap making was supposed to be Chim’s live originally (2) he originally invited Tae to do the live with him (3) Tae refused (4) Chim wanted to do the live, but not alone (5) He asked Kook (6) Kook accepted, and they did the live together.

That’s a lot of assumptions to make for a logical analysis, but it’s seriously the vibe I got from Tae’s phone call.

Let’s look at the key points from the mandago live:

(1) Chim wanted to do Mandago (2) He wanted to do with Tae because it’s their thing (3) Tae didn’t want to come (4) Chim invited Kook instead (5) Kook came

After Kook joined the Mandago live, it didn’t take long before Tae joined as well. As stated in my analysis, you could make the argument that he wanted to eat as well (because they had food), but he ended up bringing his own food. He didn’t have to join the live to eat if he already had food on his own. I think he was upset because Chim was doing “mandago” without him. Even thought it ended up not really being a mandago live and more of Eat Jin.

Chim’s behavior in both lives really seems similar to me. So I sort of got the feeling that Tae was originally supposed to be part of the live but refused. Then when he saw that Chim was with Kook instead, he got upset. He called Chim, and Chim got upset. A “if you wanted to be in the live, why didn’t you just do it” sort of upset. Like, if Tae didn’t want to do the live with him, why is he calling during the live? Knowing they’re live? You get what I’m saying.

And, no. I’m not saying this is a Ji / kook vs vmin thing. And I’m not even trying to imply any sort of unhealthy level of jealousy here. I just think (if this theory is remotely correct) it shows how Chim is being real with us. He’s not just pulling our leg and saying that he wants to do a live with Tae but he really doesn’t and it’ll never happen. I think, again - if my theory is remotely correct, this shows how Tae doesn’t want to do a solo vmin live with Chim. Even if this theory is correct, it’s possible that Tae would have called regardless if Kook was there or not. Because, based on the theory, he was initially invited, but he didn’t want to be there in person. Alone. With Chim. For whatever reason.

Again, relating it to my theory, I think Tae either called because (1) If Kook was going to be there, he would have joined. Because that would have been a third person, keeping it from being him and Chim alone. So when he saw Kook there, he wanted to make himself part of it somehow. Or (2) He would have called even if it was just Chim because he’s more okay with talking on the phone than being there in person.

I might do an actual analysis of the kimbap live, but we’ll see. It’s easier to talk about a theory here than to actually analyze because there’s not a lot to go off of without making assumptions.

Why do you think vmin won’t do a vlive together?

With some other saying that them not doing so makes it hard for us to see that they are really friends.

So, my idea on why they won’t do a vlive together is a little different than what I’ve read around. I think the reason it doesn’t happen is simply because they don’t want to, but not for any particular reason other than taking the time to do it. I’m going to explain.

We can make the argument that they are comfortable with each other and don’t want to have to be too careful. But I think that’s a copout for thinking a little deeper about it and making it more realistic. Yeah, it’s possible that they’ll have to watch themselves while they’re live, but what makes that different than any of the other members?

Ji / kook can have a live together, look into each other’s eyes, tease each other, and all kinds of things during vlive, so...why is the case different for them than with vmin? I don’t really think that them having to “watch it” has anything to do with them not doing a live together. It’s not like they’re really going to “forget about the camera” and accidentally make out or something. Even if they are in a relationship. They wouldn’t do that.

My honest belief, until I’m given reason to believe otherwise, is because they simply don’t want to. Vlives are often done from the studio or some other place where they work (if not hotel rooms). We don’t get random vlives of them living day-to-day life or going to Lotte World. So this means that most vlives we get are planned for work, or done during down time from work. But it’s always related to work somehow.

I really think that Tae and Chim are best friends and enjoy spending time with each other the same way any other friends do. When they are together, that’s their time, and they probably don’t want to share it with us. Because they share a lot of things with us, and I’m sure they have things (like their friendship or time together) that they want to keep for themselves. Despite Chim acting like the more private one, yet wanting to do a vlive with Tae, I think this is why Tae refuses. Because, although he doesn’t seem to be shy about expressing his love for Chim, he wants to keep their private time private as well.

And that’s all I think it is. And, honestly, if that’s the case, we can relish in the fact that we don’t get vmin lives. Even if getting one would be nice. It’s nicer to know that they want to keep their private time private because their friendship is important to them and they don’t want to make it about us. And. Who knows? Maybe the mandago thing and the dumpling incident all have a part to play in this. Because maybe the publicity put on their friendship at the time is what caused those kinds of strains to happen. And to avoid something like that again, maybe that’s why they won’t go live.

But. I think it’s possible we’ll get one eventually. I haven’t given up yet.

I don’t know why people keep saying Tae is sad or that vmin are fighting. They are fine. Nothing’s wrong.

I don’t know what’s more harmful. Assuming someone is sad all the time. Or assuming they’re fine all the time.

There are times when Tae is obviously down, and he shows it. I think he doesn’t try so hard to put on a fake happy face for us, and I think that’s wonderful. It’s okay not to be okay, and we really don’t have a lot of icons out there that let us know that. They may tweet and talk about mental health and the importance of it. But celebrities that actually show their mental status or even talk about their own level of happiness is far and few between. People think they’re happy all the time, and those that do say they’re not often get attacked because “why wouldn’t they be happy? They have fame, money, and everything?”

If you don’t see that Tae might be sad at a particular moment, or don’t think that vmin has a moment of tension, I guess that’s fine. But to say that it never happens is obviously false. Everyone gets sad sometimes, and everyone has tension with their closest friends.

That being said, those who go overboard and act like Tae is never happy or that vmin hate each other...yeah. That’s a bit much and needs to stop. Tae’s emotions are dynamic, and vmin love each other.

Regardless of what Tae and Chim are together, they are still best friends. The one thing that we confirm about their relationship is indeed that.

I really don’t think they ever say “he’s my best friend” in a “no-homo” kind of way, and that’s sort of what both scenarios presume. Two men can call each other “best friends” without having an implied “no-homo” label onto it.

And let me talk about this “no-homo” thing, okay? I’m not sure how many lgbt people are asking this question, but from my own lgbt perspective “no-homo” was always a little offensive to me. Like, why can’t you just give your bro a hug? Or why can’t you just say “I love you” to a friend? Are we really to the point where people have to say “no-homo” because they don’t want to give someone the wrong idea?

Honestly, my best straight male friend hugs me and tells me he loves me all the time, and he sometimes says “no-hetero” when he does it. And I love him to bits and pieces in a completely no-hetero kind of way because he started the joke because he realized how offensive the other statement was. At least, how much it bothered me regardless of how any other lgbt people felt about it.

Anyway. My point is, regardless of what kind of relationship vmin have together, I’m sure they say “he’s my best friend” because they are best friends. Regardless of any other labels they could have, they are best friends, and that’s what they want to let us know. I don’t think it has anything to do with dumbass “friendzoning” or “no-homo” shit. I don’t think they have some ulterior motive by simply stating that they are best friends.

And. Honestly. I if I asked my sister who her best friend is? She’d say her husband (or me lmao). If I asked my best friend who her best friend is? She’d say her husband (or me lmao). If I asked my straight male best friend? He’d say his wife (or me lmao). So. Again. My point is. Your significant other can be your best friend, and referring to them as such doesn’t mean you are friendzoning them.

It doesn’t mean that vmin is a real couple. It doesn’t mean that they’re not a real couple. It just means that, if they are, they’re obviously not going around introducing each other or talking about each other as boyfriends.
