Wonder Woman (2009) remains the only adaptation to accurately get across the fact that the Amazons ended up on Themiscyra because of the trauma and horrors they faced in Man's World and I desperately need future Wonder Woman media to talk about that more

Heehoo, Pandemonic Paradise doodles.

Doodle jabbers:
Been in my head for a while; just him. Pulling on a glove. Looking uhhhh less than happy.
The goodest Doom Chandelier! She, uh. First time, eh?
From the next chapter! Ingo meeting three good little Rotoms! I am very happy with the profile.
I gave him a steel chair. Finally.
Steel chair saga continues with violent intent.
4 and 5 aren't in the actual fic. They're just there for sillies.
I can't believe that my first time drawing Volo was for this.
(Program used: Krita)
(Time taken: approximately 2 hours 15 minutes) (that's a lot don't look at me that's a lot)

One of the interesting things about The Good Place is that the show ends up being, effectively, a demonstration of why utilitarianism and especially consequentialism are garbage moral systems, but... the characters themselves never seem to notice that. Somehow.
Chidi gives us brief introductions to both of these moral theories (utilitarianism = the right action is the one that causes happiness for the most people, consequentialism = actions should be judged by their effects), they are discussed briefly, and then barely brought up again by name. But that’s what their afterlife runs on! The points system judges actions purely by consequences, and the good of bad of those consequences seems to be judged by their cumulative effects on, well, the entire universe, balanced out like a math problem. The points system IS utilitarianist and consequentialist.
(Sidebar: it’s true that it’s said a couple times that motivations also matter in that they also have to be correct, which... if true, would be a really infuriating twist. However! I don’t actually think this is true—Doug Forcett, for instance, is being “good” for purely self-interested reasons, and still has a very high point total. The cases in which motives seem to matter are Eleanor’s S1 actions in the Neighborhood—in which case she was playing in a very rigged game—and the Soul Squad’s “oh no, we know about the point system so we’re automatically damned” arc, which IIRC they didn’t actually get confirmation of.
I think it makes the most sense to theorize that Michael just assumed they were doomed, and was Right For The Wrong Reasons, because Michael canonically doesn’t understand the system that well.)
Anyway! We see the logical outcome of the points system in Doug Forcett, who has become a “happiness pump” in his attempt to live a utilitarianistically perfect life. His life is degrading, miserable, cut off from humanity, and also 100% selfish—he’s unhappy and an awful person! And that’s what the point system comes closest to rewarding. The points system doesn’t actually care if you’re a good person, or tried your best to help other people, or did what you thought was right. And that’s very obviously garbage.
But what the characters actually discuss is not “this system is unjust because it judges people by their unknowing cumulative effect on the world,” but “this system is unjust because there’s no ethical consumption in the modern world.” Which... also a decent point, but weird that they skated around the more fundamental problem.
What the show shows us—through the protagonists’ arcs in becoming loving, altruistic, honorable people, and again through the revised system which teaches people to be more virtuous—is that motivations and choices are the measure of morality. What it TELLS us, through the points system being left unquestioned as the Incontestable Standard of Goodness which people now just have to satisfy after dying instead of before (they’re playing by the same rules in the afterlife, just on Easy Mode), is that consequences are the measure of morality.
I mean, the show as a whole DOES leave me with the message of “consequentialism is garbage and here’s why.” But... that’s still a weird disconnect, and it makes me wonder if that’s actually a message they meant to write or not.

honestly im still not wrong about terastalling being/causing a manifestation of dreams and desires but it sure is also timey wimey i guess
#coatlythoughts#didnt expect the seeing the dead at the crystal pool to come around in that way tbh#it is strange though.. why did terapagos do that..#and it like. i think implies that you gave an alternate dimension arven his parent back? since they say theyll go home and read briars book#and you have the book arven has throughout the sv main story..#but that also happened?? in our universe?? thats the hint for that cutscene??#like you could say maybe prof had multiple copies but idk the scribbled name implies its The Copy from their childhood no?#tbh i dont really like it having actual spacetime powers so im going to pretend thats also a dream/desire#the player wishes for their friend arven to have had a better life somehow#and terapagos manifests a token that may or may not indicate that you influenced that in another timeline#just like the paradox pokemon are a token that may or may not indicate that the prof's 'paradise' is real#though i guess the scarlet/violet books being real throws a wrinkle into it since they also saw the paradox mons#BUT THAT WAS ALREADY A WRINKLE CAUSE PROF DIDNT SEE THEM UNTIL THEY MADE THE TIME MACHINE!!!! AUGH!!!!!!!#terapagos itself might also be a manifested token of briar's desires for heath to be right if we wanna keep spiralling about it#not only wanting terapagos to be real for vindication reasons but also her desires to control and understand terastalling further#what better way to fufill that than a pokemon you can catch that has. immense control of that energy#basically what im saying is its all a dream but like in a fucked up way thats also real#paradox mons is tulpas i think
