Rolan Headcanons: deciding to start a family, and conceiving

pairing: Rolan x afab!reader (use of she/her pronouns)

01. Deciding to start a family

OKAY SO let's talk about Rolan's thoughts on having children

throughout his life, he never really thought about having kids

he never thought he'd get the opportunity

his dreams of becoming a wizard were always the most important thing to him - not having a relationship, and certainly not having kids

so when you came into his life and he realized his feelings for you, he started having to think about things like marriage and settling down and the possibility of starting a family

he was always so torn on having kids with you, especially if it was something you wanted

his hesitation towards fatherhood fully comes from the things that he experienced as a child, and his poor self-image as a result

I personally subscribe to the community headcanon that Rolan's parents were two humans who abandoned him once they saw he was a tiefling

he grew up with a horrible self-image because of it - every day he'd curse his red skin, his black horns, his sharp nails and teeth, his long, pointed ears, and his spear-tipped tail, blaming every part of his body for being the reason his parents abandoned

Cal and Lia's mother took him in when he was a bit older (maybe ~12 y/o), their dad not being in the picture - so he never had a father figure

he took care of Cal and Lia the majority of the time as their mother worked every day to provide for all of them

he was barely an adult when she died and he became their sole caregiver

She had taught him to mend clothing, provide first aid, and cook when she was still alive - skills he used almost every day to care for them once she was gone

his siblings helped his self-image as much as they could, but some insecurities persisted, and by the time you meet him he still methodically conceals his ears with his hair

he was never able to escape the scrutiny of others about his lineage, though - from his peers when he was a child to the people of Elturel after the descent

As much as he loved you and wanted to give you what you desired, a massive part of him didn't want to bring a child into the world knowing the harassment they'd very likely have to face

and he also didn't want to put you through the pain of seeing your child scrutinized just for existing

Rolan also didn't believe he'd be a good father - having no example to go off of, for one,

and he was deathly afraid of not being able to bond with his baby - thus subjecting them to a life of insecurity like he had been

This would be his state of mind for a while, especially at the beginning of your marriage

You'd be the one to bring up having kids - if you never did, he likely wouldn't either, or if you expressed not wanting kids, he'd agree and that would be that

but if you do want kids....

The first time you brought it up, he'd be nervous to tell you he didn't think he wanted kids - and he wouldn't offer much of an explanation

But the more you found out about him and his childhood, the dots would connect themselves for you

The conversation would come up again one night once you're married (maybe about a year and a half after the events of the epilogue party) when you ask him what his thoughts on starting a family were now that you were married - more out of curiosity rather than as an implication

He wouldn't answer the question at first, instead, he'd inquire why you were asking

you'd clarify you "didn't mean right now", since everything in your lives was still so new, but that you had been thinking about it and wanted to know where his head was now that all of the chaos was over

"Is that something you want?", he'd ask with wide, almost nervous eyes, to which you'd tell him how much you'd love to have his children one day, reminding him how much you love him

He'd be honest with you, returning your expression of love before saying he really didn't know and he'd need more time to think about it

He'd apologize several times with pain and conflict in his eyes - convinced that he was letting you down

you'd just hold him and reassure him that there was nothing to be sorry about; that he didn't have to explain himself, that you'd always love him

Rolan would come to you of his own volition around 6 months later, asking if you remembered that conversation and revealing that he had been thinking about it a lot

He'd express how much he loved you, and how incredible of a mother you'd be - acknowledging that he knew how badly you wanted to start a family with him

Then he'd open up and tell you everything, trying extremely hard not to break down in the process

He'd end by saying that he had realized how much he did, in fact, want to have a baby with you, but that he was beyond scared - and he still needed more time

a couple years later, he coordinates a particularly romantic date night for you - beginning with a candle-lit dinner of your favorite childhood meal and ending in a warm bath surrounded by flowers and more candlelight

Then, as you sat on his lap facing him, his arms wrapped securely around you holding you close against him, he'd tell you he was ready

In a low whisper, he'd reveal that he was ready to start a family with you, to give you a baby

He was still scared, but your love provided him enough strength and security to push through the remaining veils of fear

02. Conceiving:

God I was born to write Rolan trying to get you pregnant headcanons

I suggest reading my tiefling headcanons post, otherwise, some of the things you're about to read will feel like they come out of nowhere

You had been regularly taking Nararoot for the duration of your relationship - Rolan often brewing a cup of it for you once every tenday, adding in honey and cinnamon for taste

(Nararoot is my favorite birth control method in Faerun, it's a canon/lore-accurate common root plant - the skin renders its consumer infertile for a tenday. you can either eat it or steep tea out of it. it only works for afab folks. it does not disturb the menstrual cycle like most forms of IRL birth control)

it would've been time for your next dose of nararoot about 7 days after the night he told you he was ready

but instead of a nararoot tea at breakfast that morning, he made green tea for you - saying that he felt weird not preparing some kind of tea once he realized he wouldn't be serving you nararoot anymore

and if it wasn't already, your last dose would be 100% out of your system a few days after that - restoring your fertility for the first time in years

the first time you two try, Rolan tells you beforehand it's likely not going to work as he could sense your period was going to start soon

and, as always, he was right; your period came 2 days later

once you guys continued trying, he'd occasionally smell the top of your head with the intent to clue himself in on your hormone levels

one day when you went to see him in his office, he'd greet you with a hug - only for you to see an anxious, sorrowful expression on his face when you pulled away

Once you ask him what's the matter, he'd tell you it didn't work, probably feeling a little guilty

"It seems you'll start your period soon, my love. It didn't work, I'm sorry..."

Despite how nervous he had been before each time you had sex during that first cycle, he was still a little upset when he realized you weren't pregnant

And of course, you'd comfort him, telling him it was unlikely you'd get pregnant right away, but that it would happen eventually - and he'd feel a bit better knowing that you weren't torn over it

after your second period, he stops being nervous before sex, and he'd be interested in trying to conceive with you more often

Rolan thought he loved cumming inside you before, but it was completely different now that he was actively trying to get you pregnant

I'm not sure how to get it into people's heads that Arya is a female character. She's not a boy, not nonbinary, trans, agender, or genderless. I don't intend this in a way to be negative or wanky, but her girlhood is imbedded within her character. The problem isn't that Arya stans are missing the point by overemphasizing her femininity and wanting her to be a barefoot tradwife baby making machine, but that we're stating it exists when the majority of fandom and the show itself have gone out of the way to minimize the relevancy of her gender. I'm fully convinced there are a lot of people who think Arya would be the exact same character had GRRM created her as a male character named Arry instead, perhaps they'd do a better job at acknowledging her importance.

What's most ironic to me is how these same fans will gush and coo over the sisters being more alike than we think, but only if it involves giving Arya's characteristics to Sansa. Well acktually, Sansa likes to ride horses just as much as Arya does! They're so alike uwu! But dare acknowledge that Arya has traits and aspects commonly associated to Sansa then not only does that get accusations of wanting Arya to become Sansa, but that it's solely about showing Sansa up and wanting her to grovel in Arya's shadow and superiority 🙄 Hypocrisy and projection showing itself.

Somewhat of an aside, but I recently saw a post on reddit complaining about the fact that all four of Daemon's children survived the Dance specifically focused on the fact that both Rhaena and Baela lived. According to the OP, one of them should've died and their post-war roles in the story should've been given to only one of them. Which at its core is really the main conflict between Sansa and Arya stans, no matter how much the Stansas want to cover their ears and play dumb. It's not about Arya stans projecting their sibling squabbles onto the two of them but simply the fact that it's not possible for two characters to fulfill the same role in the story, specifically when it involves two female characters. The existence of two Stark sisters is an inconvenience for the people who want the story to revolve around Sansa.

I have to believe there's some bubbles that they don't want to admit will burst if TWOW will ever be released and that's why they cling to the idea that Arya stans are the delusional ones. They have to believe that the parts of Sansa's seasons 5-8 storyline they like came from GRRM instead of D&D or else their Jonsa and QITN fantasies will fall apart. I have no idea how someone can watch the scene where Sansa tells Arya she couldn't survive what she had while Arya can only sputter out that she was training and believe 1) it makes sense for their book characters and 2) D&D didn't blatantly favor Sansa and Sophie over Arya and Maisie.

This ask came literally seconds after I drafted a post talking about this exact topic and it's so wild to me that we were both up thinking about Arya + her girlhood and wanting to discuss it 🥹

As for this ask, you really hit the nail on the head. Arya's gender is an essential aspect of her journey but fandom ignores that because they've decided that there's only one "right" way to exist as a female character. Arya's self-esteem issues stem from her being a non-conforming Lady in a misogynistic society, she has to disguise herself as a boy in part because of the threat of sexual violence, in Harrenhal she is assigned gender-specific tasks/labor, political matches are made without her knowledge/consent, she is threatened with sexual violence multiple times, and even her role within the FM is influenced by her gender. Her being non-conforming doesn't mean she's the complete antithesis of everything feminine. The obsession with propping up Sansa has ruined people's ability to perceive complex female characters, ironically including Sansa herself. They genuinely would've respected Arya more if she had died passively rather than fight for her life and you can't tell me that isn't misogyny.

That Reddit post is a great example of how people genuinely can't (or refuse to) comprehend the idea of two female characters occupying the same space. Cause you're right, that is the root of the issue. I think the only reason they bother with the fake "Stark sisters uwu" crap is because they've backed themselves into a faux-feminist corner and they don't want to look hypocritical for disliking Arya. So instead, they pretend to care all while rewriting her to serve as Sansa's prop. This is also why so many Queen!Sansa truthers are also anti-Dany + think that Sansa becoming Queen depends on Dany's downfall. They desperately cling to the show as canon, when D&D have openly admitted they changed the story because they favored Sansa/Sophie. They're fine with how show!Arya is written because to them, that's exactly how she should be; a subservient lapdog for Sansa. TWOW is definitely going to ruin that illusion, and one of the reasons I'm optimistic about it being released is getting to see fandom's reaction.
