I like to re post this every now and again because it's good advice I frequently forget.
Also I post it in part because I'm laying in bed with Covid (for the first time) at the moment and eating as much fruit as I can to expedite recovery. I grabbed a banana and orange, ate the banana and asked myself if this was a good combo or not. Glad I checked, because it was not. The last thing I need is indigestion.
But because it's me, my main focus has been doubling down on nutrition and observing my own results. I was eating plant based before, but sometimes I went a little too hard on the peanut butter trail mix, breads, or other sweet treats.
My doctor said rest and hydrate, but I took it a step further and since testing positive have cut out wheat, sugar, and any kind of dairy or processed foods. I figure nothing that could make inflammation worse. I've been consuming tons of herbs like cinnamon, ginger, echinacea, and turmeric while eating fresh citrus fruits like lemon, orange, strawberry, and pineapple daily.
Now I did a bit of tooling about the internet to see if any studies had been done over the last four years regarding a plant based diet and it's effects on Covid. The results were hopeful.
I found one study that said,
"Merino et al revealed that healthy plant-based foods could decrease the risk and severity of COVID-19.21 In this large survey, it was shown that as the quality of the diet rises, the risk of disease COVID-19 (HR 0.91) and severe COVID-19 (HR 0.59) diminishes.
Which gave me hope so I kept digging.
Another one stated, "Compared with an omnivorous Western diet, plant-based diets containing mostly fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, with restricted amounts of foods of animal origin, are associated with reduced risk and severity of COVID-19. "
And I can tell you that has been my experience thus far. I developed a fever that went away after 24 hours and didn't go over 100.4. My only other symptom has been a stuffy nose with sinus pressure. Im definitely tired and need to limit activity but I can still taste and smell, breathe through my nose a decent amount of the time, and I'm not coughing. I'm lucky in that I have time off from work and for that I am grateful, as rest is another key component.
And why would a plant based diet be so beneficial for mitigating Covid symptoms? Because, "plant-based dietary patterns are rich in antioxidants, phytosterols and polyphenols which positively affect several cell types implicated in immune function and exhibit direct antiviral properties."
The full study can be found if you pop this into Google::
Acosta-Navarro JC, Dias, LF, de Gouveia LAG et al. Vegetarian and plant based diets associated with lower incidence of COVID-19. BMJ Nutr Prev Health 2024:e000629. doi:10.1136/bmjnph-2023-000629
I was really scared at first and this information helped me feel more empowered in my health and recovery. It's not a substitute for any medical attention or prevention like vaccines, hand washing, and mask wearing- all things I was doing regularly prior to getting sick which may have also been variables in keeping my symptoms down. A little help goes a long way.
Has any other plant based person had a similar experience? Let me know.

On the one hand, I’ve gone up a size this year and I need new clothes so I don’t waste time every day trying to fit into the size I think I am in my mind. On the other, I’ve been in denial about bumping up a size bracket and I don’t want to spend too much money updating my wardrobe cause I **think** this new weight is temporary. Hot desert weather dressing is easier (dresses and skorts!) but now that it’s butt cold I have to deal with jeans and zippers and leggings and tights under dresses and layers again and I was not ready for that. Everything fits clingy and the few new long sleeved tops I bought in a larger size last week feel a little sloppy to me. They’re just for WFH at my computer but it’s throwing me into a fashion identity crisis. Now that the semester is over I have two weeks to update my spring academic work wardrobe and that is a very important aesthetic to me. If I don’t have a serious femme librarian outfit on I cannot think. I’ll be on campus 2-3 times a week. Where do I even begin? PS I finished grading!

Tip: Coffee Crêpes is a delightful creperie near the Seine. They have clearly labeled vegan menu sections for savory and sweet galettes, and have a range of interesting vegan ingredients like pesto, mozzarella, and hazelnut spread. Don't be fooled though: their vegan "crepes" are in fact just galettes. Four tables available for outdoor seating!

Congee!
Tumblr media
This is real good for sick people, as it's got lots of liquids and is easy to digest. Lots of Asian countries have variations on this idea, and my version is not attempting "authenticity" of any kind. It's just soothing and good.
"The English word congee is derived from the Tamil word kanji (கஞ்சி, kañci, IPA: [ˈkaɲdʑiː])." (from the wikipedia entry)
It's also easy to make, depending on what you add!
In its basic form it's just rice, overcooked, in a lot of water/stock/broth.
I only know how to make it in an instant pot, but there's lots of recipes online for stove-top.
When I'm already sick and low on energy, I use dried onion and powdered garlic and canned carrots (add canned carrots at the end, add fresh at the beginning). When I'm feeling a little better or making it for someone else I make it fancier, like I did here.
Fancy version, pictured above:
Roughly chop and an onion and a shit-ton of garlic. Saute in oil in the IP, with a dash of turmeric if you want. When the onion is soft add one cup rinsed white rice and six or seven cups of water. (Above is 7 cups, 6 cups makes it thicker.) Add broth paste/bullion/whatever seasonings you like and taste to check. Close lid and set to 30 minutes on manual. I always let it come to natural release.
Meanwhile, soak soy curls, then drain and season. Fry in oil. Also chop some green onions. (Obviously if you eat meat, you can add meat--I bet rotisserie chicken would be good.)
Serve soup topped with soy curls and green onions.
"I'm sick af" version:
Throw one cup rice, 6 or 7 cups of water, broth paste or whatever, and as many whole cloves of garlic as you feel like peeling, into the IP (it'll soften completely, I promise). Set for 30 minutes. Go upstairs and lie down. An hour or so later you can come downstairs, and add a drained can of carrots if you want, stir, then eat as much as you want. Make sure someone puts the leftovers away, though. They do reheat very nicely. You might want to add the full 7 cups of water if you're going to be reheating it, as it thickens even more when it gets cold.

There are many things you should absolutely never compare to the Holocaust:
Being forced to wear masks and get vaccinated.
Eating meat.
Abortion.
Being forced to take measures to save your life and others is not the same as the dehumanization of millions of people and genocide.
Animal life is precious...but not as precious as the lives of human beings.
A fetus is not the same as a person. It is unsentient. It can only survive through being in another's body. And it does not have the same capacity for feeling as someone who has already been born.

i hung out with both of them again over the weekend and it's going really well* and this is still wild to me. it's been exactly what i needed- just easy and good, and good in different ways bc they're so different from each other! but i don't think i've fully described either here
Bookstore: very tall. verrry sexy voice. nb and bi. does not do small talk.** similar taste in media to my own, esp movies, book genres, and spooky podcasts; every time we hang out is like (sexually charged) book club. big nose. always looks exhausted (hot). younger than me but an oldest sibling and lowkey has oldest sister syndrome, but not in a bad way.
Tech Guy: medium height. v round. v much a standard normal straight guy*** but sweet? adventurous- seems kinda boring and normcore, but the lore keeps getting wilder. he's iranian (initiated his citizenship process immediately after the 2016 election (can successfully navigate bureaucracy (hot))) and has offered to take me on a date to his favorite little middle eastern grocery.**** maintains the exact level of beard scruff that makes me craaaazy. the EYEBROWS on this bitch!! older than me but a youngest sibling (with sisters, so like. he seems to understand that women are human beings).
Both: soft hands.***** lots of friends, including platonic female friends. dislike going out and doing things alone, except for going to the movies, which they do often. when asked what dnd class would you be, personally, like you as the person you are now, both said... bard.****** idk how to feel ab that one.
so i like them both and i'm also glad i started seeing them at the same time, bc i think if it was just one or the other, things would have gotten too intense too fast (bc they both like me A LOT and i'mmmmm enjoying that more than i would have expected, i am tempted to overindulge in such adoration). as-is, i've made a list of guidelines for myself that's helping me to maintain boundaries and keep things as tidy as i can. it helps that they're both good at communicating and planning!
anyway next weekend i'm hanging out with the two friends who set me up with these ppl and i need to think of something very good and special to bring them to say thanks!!!
#*i baked for them both which is like. when i baked on days i hung out with messy guy i was like lemme not tell him. that's not what this is.#i dated my ex for MONTHS before i made anything for him. but idk this is different i'm different now!#(i made an incredible aromatic apple galette based on a scent blend i made for reading a biography of cleopatra for Bookstore#bc they mentioned that they finally felt like they got their sense of smell back after having covid months ago#and i made huge gloriously sticky sweet iced cinnamon rolls (vegan!) for Tech Guy bc i was gonna pick some up from a bakery by his apt#but then i realized. i could just make them (better!) myself)#** every other text from this mf is a grammatically correct paragraph that conveys Specific Information or asks a Clear Question#they were like Idk why i always have so many autistic people in my social orbit. and i said girl i'll tell you exactly why lmao#*** he said he's 'like 70% sure [he's] not bi.' that is not 100% and this bitch LOVES professional wrestling aka homoerotic gymnastics so..#(aj styles is his fave which does seem like a v heterosexual choice. but. also he's seen ricochet perform live!!!)#**** i love grocery stores i LOVE grocery stores.#***** lissen my ex was basically a farmer which was nice for some reasons but that mf had calluses on calluses and didn't moisturize.#hand stuff could not be a key part of our repertoire SADLY.#****** Bookstore used to do some serious Performance Art (see: very tall good voice) and Tech Guy is a musician#and they have both made comments about how much they enjoy supporting their friends (within and outside of the context of id-ing as bards)#lizzo_boys.mp3#bonus way they are similar: they are very verbal about how attractive they find me and how lucky they feel to be with me and#they have each explicitly stated that their primary objective during sex is to please me#(my ex said the same but these two are taking it to a new level)#man i didn't realize how much i needed an ego boost after everything with messy guy. they are certainly giving me that!#and i also feel lucky to have found each of them. they're great :)

Read More: Good News From Israel
Tumblr media
This week's newsletter takes you inside many of Israel's achievements. Israeli medical successes include the world's smallest heart pump; a mother and daughter heart transplant; removal of painful internal human tissue by freezing; and how to live longer by maintaining a healthy inside.  Israelis went inside the United Nations to show how Israel benefits the world; Israeli apartments are being strengthened inside to protect them against earthquakes; and Israeli children receive education even while inside hospitals. You can read the inside story of Israel's Iron Beam laser defense project; the inside-out process of an Israeli startup that turns any plastic waste back into petrochemicals; an Israeli sunscreen with minerals that go inside coral reefs to promote growth; and an Israeli airport scanning system that can check inside passenger baggage 10 times faster than any human-operated X-ray device. So many Israeli companies are working inside US States to benefit their economies; and inside companies such as Volvo and thousands of cities worldwide to make transportation safer and more efficient.
Finally, the atmosphere inside Israel has been uplifted by the story of Lucy Dee's husband and remaining children coming to the hospital to listen to Lucy's heart which is now beating inside an overjoyed Israeli woman.
The photo is of the inside of Israel's Knesset - Parliament, the decision-making institution of the most democratic country in the Middle East. The photo was taken during the announcement that the President of Israel would travel to London and walk on Shabbat to Westminster Abbey to attend the coronation of King Charles III of the United Kingdom.

Southern USDA dried fruit pie
Tumblr media
Ha! My homemade crust really falls apart.
I've found myself with a copious supply of dried fruits, berries and raisins from the USDA. Based off of this recipe for southern fried pies, traditional pie is less of a challenge than flipping and trying to keep the fried pies in one piece.
There has been a supply chain shortage of sugar recently, so I've opted for maple (flavored corn) syrup, otherwise known as pancake syrup, which has added tremendously to the flavor. Plus some of my favorite spices thrown in the mix to really complete the flavor profile.
You will need: glass jar(/s) (I used pasta sauce jars)
4 cups dried fruit and berries/raisins
1 1/3 cup maple/pancake syrup
3/4 cup chopped walnuts
1/4 cups corn starch
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp ground rosemary
A dash of salt
Dough pie crust (thawed, not frozen)
Fill up the jars(/s) with the mixed dried fruit and berries of your choice. Fill up the jars with filtered water, swirling to make sure most of the air bubbles escape. Soak the mixed dried fruit in the jar(/s) overnight.
Pour all of the ingredients (except for the pie crust, of course) into a pot on the stovetop. Do not drain the fruit.
Simmer and stir the fruit on stovetop until enough water is evaporated that it becomes thick and chunky.
When cooled, preheat the oven at 400°F.
Fill the pie crust with the filling and cover with a layer of dough. Poke ventilation holes into the dough.
Reduce oven heat to 350° and bake for 40-50 minutes or until golden brown.
Tips:
If you only have corn syrup, you could try flavoring it with an appropriate amount of maple extract at your discretion.
I tend to have corn muffin mix on hand more often than corn starch, but it works fine as a substitution for this purpose.
The most common premade pie crust, at least in the US, seems to be Pillsbury brand. This contains lard. I highly for recommend this recipe for pie crust if you would like to make your own. This uses vegetable oil instead of shortening. I usually have veggie oil on hand and not shortening.

Sat 9th July
I was supposed to be hiking up Ben Nevis today with my sister and niece but obviously I'm not well enough. I feel so guilty because I've felt mostly fine today but then I remember how little physical activity I've done and that I'm still very tired and also coughing and definitely infectious so it would have been dumb to go. So not beating myself up over it.
Had a pretty productive morning doing housework after Matthew left, then spent my afternoon working outside. Read my book and lay in the warm air to relax and it was so lovely. Did Yoga For When You're Sick (yoga with Adriene) and that felt lovely to move a little bit and breathe deeply. Slowly getting back to normal I think!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Made pasta bake rammed with veggies and chickpeas when I came inside, it turned out delicious and I have 2 big dishes of it so will be living off that for the next few days to try to actually get some nutrients into me bc I've been eating so badly while I've been ill, all I wanted was chocolate and bread and that's mostly what I ate 😬 but tonight I ate my veggies out on the deck in the evening sun and listened to the birds and it was lovely.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Had a lovely soak in the bath and finally washed my hair, and am now snuggled up with the sofas pushed together in my blanket, about to have a little vegan cheesecake and watch Emma.
