Hello! May I ask your advice on a crafting project? I have a neon sign that I love but it is way too bright. I'm thinking of painting over the neon tubes or putting translucent paper over them or something to dim the light. Do you have any suggestions?
If it's true neon, I'd be hesitant to put anything on it. While well-made glass tube neon shouldn't get hot, it's not impossible for that to happen. There are some heat-rated materials you could look into--lighting gels*, like those made by Rosco, for example, are intended to be used safely with potentially high-temp theatrical/film lights. They can be a little hard to get your hands on though, and I'd still hesitate to apply them directly to the neon; better safe than sorry. They're heat resistant, not heat proof.
If it's LED "neon"--plastic, not glass--you can pretty much use whatever. Alcohol inks are interesting with light coming through them; you can get color-tinted transparent vinyl, even mod-podge'ed tissue paper would be fine to glue over the 'tubes', because LEDs don't heat up. Might be worth testing some stuff--you can try materials on plastic wrap and cover the tubes to see how it effects the light.
*Lighting gels are transparent sheets of plastic that tint light to specific colors. You can layer sheets for custom colors but they manufacture them in a huge range of hues and sizes.

You can be cheap without being a scumbag. Buy used things. Repair them when they wear out. Check every vending machine you pass for forgotten change in the coin return. Get rid of all that excess blood plasma you don’t need for your non-intensive office job. If you want to be a scumbag, though, you have to be constantly looking for new angles.
Around my part of the world, the government has been telling restaurants to cut it out with the plastic shit. Every meal you order, even if it comes to your house, comes complete with half a dozen plastic utensils that just end up in the dump and – more likely than not – choke a dolphin to death. Yeah. A dolphin. Flipper’s dead because McDonalds won’t stop giving you free forks. What do you think about that, reactionaries?
I digress. One of the things that they’ve been getting rid of as a result of this new regulation is plastic straws. So now the straws are made out of paper, which is not a problem with me, but they include those straws even when you buy a bottle of water. Bottles are for chugging, folks. Which means I have tons of leftover straws kicking around my house, and it bothered my scumbag nature to no extent not to have a creative use for them.
Sure, I tried the basics. Arts and crafts. Scale-model fabrication. Drain tubes. Using them as blowguns to knock out the mailman with a powerful paralytic agent so I could interrogate him at my leisure about why my packages take two weeks to clear customs. Nothing really worked, or at least didn’t use up the straws faster than more arrived with my weekly order (usually placed when I needed another water bottle with which to catch a newly-sprouted leak.) That is, until I figured it all out.
Way back in the 1970s, when the world was going to hell because gasoline became not as expensive as it is now, the brave Swedes had a solution. They figured out that they could burn useless trees as fuel, and so developed wood-gas reactors that they strapped to the back of their Volvos. Run out of gas? Chop down a nearby tree and cram that shit into the tank, you’re good to go. All I had to do was make a trip to Swedish eBay and order a several-hundred-pound woodgas conversion kit using someone else’s credit card. Don’t worry, environmentalists, I picked the slower shipping option. Now, I could chuck these paper straws right in there and get like half a block of gas – for free!
The project has been so successful, in fact, that I now find myself visiting fast-food restaurants just to help myself to several boxes of straws. They give me weird looks, sure, but there’s just something about a half-feral scruffy dude burrowing into your restaurant, stealing several hundred paper straws, and then running out the nearest exit that shouts “don’t call the cops yet.” Even though it probably wouldn’t be hard for them to find me in this plume of noxious waxed-paper smoke.

PAPER AIRPLANES
i suggest listening to paper airplanes by ruth b while reading this:)
Tumblr media
[2:45 am]
“hey, it’s me. i hope i didn’t wake you up.”
you hummed in response, taking a glimpse of midnight blues and deep black, a still background for the moon that shone brightly, accompanied by stars that scattered across the lonely sky. you lay down on a pile of pillows you’ve haphazardly strewn across your balcony floor, propping yourself up as you gather some paper and a pair of scissors to work on your craft as you listen to your lover in adoration.
“well, i think you’d be able to hear this anyway when you wake up—and thank god i am the first thing i’d hear when i wake up, i would never forgive myself if i’d be second to the old couple next door yelling at their son to wake up—wait, you know what, never mind. i’d be second to your alarm clock anyway,” your lover huffs over the speaker.
you let out a laugh as you imagine him crossing his arms indignantly, petty over his loss to an inanimate object.
“but that’s besides the point. point is, your alarm clock is not the one greeting you first for our anniversary...i am!” he boasts.
“so happy, happy anniversary, dear. well, i’ve prepared a speech for you so you best be ready for me when i get home...and before you tease me for being cheesy, i’d have to remind you that i’m only like this for you. you make me feel so full of happiness and i am just reminded of that each day when i get to go home to our shared home—oh it’s three already quick! write three wishes and send them off to the moon! “
it was your little tradition. you both decided that since your sleeping schedules were fucked anyway, might as well make the most of it before slipping off to slumber. so at three am, both of you would have to write down your wishes and send them off to the ‘moon’, which is essentially just each other, and it never fails to send you both preening over the romantic wishes you’d both have for one another.
as you scrawl down your message on a piece of paper, you hear a yawn from your speaker.
“i’m kind of sleepy now, dear. but before i go, let me list down my three wishes for tonight. hmm....since it’s our anniversary, my first wish would be to be able to cuddle with you when i get home. it’s really lonely here in my room so you have to promise to shower me with hugs when i get home ‘mkay?”
another yawn and you feel him hesitate on the other side of the line.
“my second wish....is to be able to grow old with you. children or none, pets or none, i don’t care. as long as i have you, i could never be a happier man. man, i know this sounds awfully cheesy, but i am so grateful to have you in my life. every time i see you, i wonder what i did so right in my life to have such an amazing partner like you. since this is a wish, you have no choice but to grow wrinkles with me now. who knows, maybe i’ll lend you my denture cream when you run out of them in the future...never mind. that’s kinda gross. i’ll just buy you a new tube of denture cream.”
you hear him yawn again and shuffle over, as though he’s getting comfortable to sleep soon.
“last wish....oh i think you’ll like this one. i know it’s been years since we’ve been dating and this is something i’ve always dreamed of. i hope you’ll be able to make this dream come true when i come home tonight—no one else could seal the deal other than you. this time, we can finally have actual anniversaries like marr- i mean, you’ll see. i hope you can wait for me, darling. i love you.”
[3:00 am]
the recording ends as you let go of your paper airplane, longingly staring at the full moon that shone alone amidst the clouds. a tear falls down your face as you remember that his third wish could never happen. you sniffle as you shifted your gaze to the ring snug in the center of the box he was supposed to bring home that night.
he didn’t come home.
so now, all you could do is send your wishes to the moon, hoping that he’d still be there, watching over you. perhaps one day you both could meet again—perhaps not here, not now, but in another life, where fate will be kinder to you both.
you slowly hold the ring with shaking hands, the words engraved onto them held the single wish you have been writing every night.
“my only wish was you.”

Donnie and Mikey are streaming together today. Their models are wearing shirts reading 'Smarts and Crafts Team', blue jeans, lab coats, safety glasses, gloves, and boots. They're messing with some science based crafts on the AR set. Shelldon and River sitting on the a box that has the chat box overplayed on it.
"So we got some resin to try out some crafts we found online." Mikey announced while they put some drop cloths on the floor around the table. "But we don't trust something not spilling, and this stuff can get tricky to clean if things go wrong."
"Which is part of why we're using UV resin, that we can just pop in the basking room for a bit to let set." Donnie says, in flat tone that sounds a bit sarcastic, "We're going to start simple, then work up to complicated, though that may go in reverse with us."
Mikey goes off screen to grab some supplies. While Donnie puts the big bottles of resin on the counter.
A cartoony turtle shell slides across the screen to have cartoon Mikey pop out with fan fare, coins tossed around, and Miss. PaintSlatter Donated $30!
Mikey jogs back in to check the notification. "Thank You, Miss. PaintSplatter for the $30. Oh 'Do Shelldon and River have access to mobile games? Hey Dee?"
"Shelldon doesn't play mobile games, but River plays Animal Crossing Pocket Camp. Partially for the app exclusive items you send to New Horizons, partially to befriend Villagers she wants, but can't find in NH." Donnie answers while he sets up some small molds. Then picks up and tests a heat gun.
"Well, we got the resin, pigments, molds, mold release, heat gun, little charms we plan to put into the resin. Are we missing anything?" Mikey askes.
"Spare gloves, paper towels, and the tall trashcan!" River answers back, then smacks the chatbots out of the chat box!
"And proper ventilation, or maskes." Shelldon says with a bit of snark.
"Right, I'll go get the portable ventilation, and trashcan and Mikey, please grab our ventilator masks from the art closet, a box of gloves, and the paper towels." Donnie instructs while they go grab said items.
Shelldon and River are left to entertain chat.
"What did I find that scared Dee? Sorry, we have been sworn to secrecy under threat of having our game libraries memory reset to no save files." River says.
Shelldon nods with his eyes closed. "And I don't have access to the file that was sent because Dee blocked me from getting it."
"FOR GOOD REASON!" Donnie tells from across the room, as he brings in what looked like an air purifier with a long tube sticking out of the back. "And for those who are confused, yes this is the portable ventilation system. Yes, it's a air purifier that I found in the dump, and heavily modified it." He announces with a bit of pride, "While I'm sure I could find something like this on the market, I wanted to build one myself."
Mikey also returns with his stuff, and organized the counter a bit so there's less of a chance of something getting knocked over.
They proceeded to finish set up, and get started on some simple resin experiments. And at least one small spillover and frantic clean up, before shouting 'You saw nothing!' And a 'Clip Recorded and Saved' from both Shelldon and River, who don't mention it right away.
Chat was still begging for the info of what Scared Dee, but after some were knocked out it calmed down, people started giving suggestions on what the guys could do with the resin.

Masterpost
My actual favorite nickname for Donnie is Tello, and I want to have River call him 'Tello Tello', but that can't really happen with most of my story. Unless I can think of another behind the scenes post.

Hello! I love your Loth cat designs! And wanted to make my own since Disney hasn’t renewed its loth/Tooka cat products and are sold out (Plus I like your designs waaaay better). My biggest issue is figuring out how to made the head of your cute Loth cats 😅 I’m not on and unable to get onto Instagram could you post the story on how you designed it on here or give me some tips on how to make one? -thank you so much :)
Also, I’m designing the pattern of this one after a cheetah, I also love how you did the striped tail so I’m going to do that with black and white longer fur at the end. (I’ll need to trim it some though.) but any tips you could give would be much appreciated! 😄
Tumblr media
Hi there! Thank you for reaching out, I will post roughly how I made the heads. However it's all the same techniques of making an art doll. There are great youtube tutorials out there which I watched to learn how to make my loth cats.
Long Post! Also heads up, they look really creepy until you put fur on them!
I used a styrofoam base for the head to keep it really light, loth cats have huge heads so it's important to keep the head light on the doll so it doesn't fall on it's face right away. Craft stores usually sell half spheres that I carved down to more of an oval shape to start.
I bought resin eyes on etsy and glued them on with hot glue. There are so many color options so have fun with them! I then used foam clay to add more shape to the face and make the eyes more natural looking. You can also probably use paper mache or another light air drying clay. But again keep the weight in mind.
I never worry about adding too many details as it will all be covered by faux fur, but having those shapes helps it look more realistic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next you enter what I call the creepy monkey phase. I usually paint the face a natural skin tone or the color of the fur so you can't see any gray.
I then attach the head to the body fur using glue. Next I cover the face in masking tape and draw the fur patterns I want onto it. This is a common fursuit head making technique. I recommend looking that up for more details on how to do that, but the photo below shows the steps I did.
*Note! Pay attention to the fur direction, on my tape pattern you can see the arrows showing which way the fur lays, use real animals as reference.
I then glued it on the face using fabric glue or hot glue. The more you cover at this point the less you have to flock later.
Tumblr media
Once you have most of the face covered, you can cover any little gaps using a flocking technique. Basically laying down a layer of glue and then taking very short hairs of faux fur and pressing it into the glue. Again there are some great youtube tutorials on how to do it if you google "flocking art doll".
Below is my first loth cat showing how weird it looks. Trust the process! It will look silly and kinda bad right until the end.
Tumblr media
Trim up any extra hairs that get in the way of the face, and next comes my favorite part, making them look like loth cats and not nightmare creatures!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I use sharpie fabric markers for the blacks and go around the eyes and mouth. This give them instant personality. You can also use some paints to add extra markings and color.
For the tail. I don't have any photos of the tail specifically, but here is the pieces of the pattern for the blue cat. The tail is basically just a rounded tube!
Tumblr media
Good luck with your build! I would love to see the final project!

And so Kader rushed off to gather the materials needed for his gift. His sister smiled. Seeing Kader be this excited about something made her happy. Considering all that had happened recently, she knew Kader needed something like this to keep him distracted. Clover headed back towards her room, humming the soft tune her mother used to sing to the both of them.
All the staff in the Whimsain Castle could see was the young prince moving with pace around the grounds. Nobody wished to question what he was doing but could see that whatever it was, it brought him joy. It was a nice sight to see. He'd been incredibly distraught after what had happened so this was the first they had seen him smile in a while.
First, Kader gathered some oak wood, taken from one of the trees in the nearby forest. He frequented the forest when he was young, going with his father on long walks. Next, he collected some of the metal scraps the Terrestrians traded to his kingdom. This trade involved an exchange of rare candies for metal parts. His kingdom was well known for baking the levelling up treats.
He asked two of his staff members, Ted the carpenter and Josey the blacksmith, to assist him in making the parts. There was some parts where he was unsure where to start but he knew he would be given help. Ted, the oranguru, laughed when the young prince decided to use the wrong type of saw for what he wanted to do and decided to take over for a bit. Embarrassed, Kader sat patiently and watched the oranguru work, marvelling at his skill. Ted had been in his family's service for years, crafting gorgeous furniture which were spread throughout the castle. The box had such a brilliant finish to it and Kader was given the opportunity to create some engravings on it. Working with care and precision, he finished after a good few hours. He pulled inspiration from the designs scattered around his kingdom. The tiny stars and swirls were a common pattern found engraved on many of the stone worked buildings. He was impressed. It wasn't as good as his sewing work but he was satisfied with the outcome.
Next came the metal pieces to be placed inside. Josey, an armarouge who had recently come over from Terrestria, had a knack for making delicate and intricate metallic structures and was able to shape the parts needed easily. It was lucky she also had some expertise in music and this definitely helped with getting the pieces to make the right notes. Kader wasn't a big fan of the heat needed for this work but appreciated the time it took her to make what he needed. She smiled at him as she pulled out the cooled tiny metallic tube and comb-like piece from the moulds. They looked perfect and had such a lovely shine to them.
Finally, with some assistance, he was able to piece everything together. It looked fantastic. He was so proud of what had been created. Testing it out by rotating the tiny handle, it sounded amazing. Each note reminded him of both of his parents. He practice singing with it a couple of times, though he soon realised he wasn't the greatest at singing. Regardless, he kept at it until he was able to get the song almost perfect. After carefully selecting some wrapping paper and ribbon to go around it, he wrapped the small box up, quite excited to see the reaction of the Pokémon he was giving it to. He sent a message to the star sending Pokémon, informing them of where to bring the recipient of his gift and what time. Everything was sorted. Now time to get himself ready.
------------------------------------------------------------------
This Pokémon really was something. A Pokémon that could create portals to different places. Kader wondered if he would be able to learn of this power someday. He pushed that thought to the back of his mind and stepped through the golden ring. He arrived in the Golden Oak Forest, the same location where he got the wood for his gift from. He just hoped the other Pokémon was able to make it in time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sitting on the bench was a Pokémon he has never seen before. She looked a bit like a gardevoir and so figured that she may be a regional variant of one. He had heard about regional variants from the stories told by the guardian. He approached the Pokémon, a slight nervous tremble in his step.
"Excuse me," began Kader, looking down at the Pokémon, "Are you by any chance the one known as Magpie?" She indicated that she indeed was, which allowed Kader to breathe a small sigh of relief. "It is a pleasure to meet you. I am Prince Kader of the Kingdom of Whimsain, located in Arkaedia. I am glad you were transported to this place without getting lost. Seems the star sending spirit did its job well. I must admit, I don't believe we have your species of Pokémon in our or any of the other kingdoms. I would love to ask you some questions but that's not the reason why I'm hear."
Kader carefully handed the box to Magpie. He waited in anticipation, hoping the gift would suffice. When the wrapping had been removed, Magpie held up a small music box, with small engraved patterns on. Looking inside, the carvings continued and tiny, intricate metal part stood still, eagerly awaiting the twist of the handle to sing its simple song.
Tumblr media
"So, I saw that on your list, you wanted something related to music. I am going to be honest, I'm not the most musical Pokémon. However, my mother was. She was a wonderful, kind Pokémon who used to sing many beautiful tunes to my sister and I. I figured that I could share one of those songs as my gift to you. The music box was made with the wood from one of the trees in this forest. I helped with the engravings but my carpenter shaped the box. The metal parts inside were made by one of my blacksmiths. I'm not the best when it comes to work like that so I decided to leave it for her to do. I, with the instruction and guidance of my carpenter and blacksmith, constructed the box together. I hope you like it."
Kader sat down on the bench next to Magpie, shuffling to get himself comfortable."
"Before you take the music box away, I wish to share one of my mother's songs with you. It is a tune she used to sing whenever my sister and I were feeling blue. It used to cheer us up and I hope it will bring you cheer too in dark times."
He was incredibly nervous about this. His mother always made this tune sound wonderful and he knew he wasn't as good as her. However, he knew he needed to try. He cleared his throat and levitated the music box with his psychic abilities.
His voice was soft as he sung. He tried to copy how his mother would have approached the song. The music box sang its melody and Kader felt a sense of joy from it. Finishing the tune, Kader took a deep breath in. He was worried he may have been slightly out of tune but he enjoyed singing it.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Mod note:
So, this is my star sending for @idolmelodies ! I was so excited to get you! As soon as I saw your character wanted something related to music, I knew I needed to make a song. Gonna be honest, I have no musical knowledge so it was a challenge creating a tune but I enjoy figuring out the notes anyway! It was fun considering what Kader would do. Of course, having a mother who loved music certainly helped and when you're royalty you have access to a lot of resources. I hope you have a happy holidays!

I don’t think hbomberguy managed to make this point in his video, but there are valid/ethical ways of making “video essays” that only use your own knowledge and opinions. Yeah, they’re more like personal essays and you’ll have to know how to communicate your own ideas in a way that’s interesting and engaging on their own merits, but there’s nothing wrong with writing about a piece of media with only your own ideas & thoughts.
When I was working on my own video about the game Superliminal, I had the idea to email the developers to see if they had done any research into therapy (specifically CBT), so that I could get a handle on the same information they used to craft the experience of the game. So I emailed them, and got a reply.
I can’t find the email itself anymore, but it basically said “I think it’d be more interesting for the video if you wrote more on your own experience of the game rather than whatever we put into it.” So that’s what I did, and while the video isn’t perfect, I’m really proud of the fact that I made a whole argument solely based on my experience of the art.
And you can do that too! If you want to just give your own personal thoughts and put a lot of effort into communicating them clearly, do that! That’s still an essay! Maybe not one with a lot of “academic” foundation to it, but putting something into the world that’s imperfect but entirely yours is so much better than something that’s refined and high-budget only because you bypassed the writing step by stealing other people’s work.
WITH ALL THAT SAID. It does help to look up things if you feel like you’re making an unfounded statement that should probably be supported by another source, and in that case you do need to make sure you do your due diligence to avoid the “mistakes” of the people hbomberguy has called out. But as someone who watches a lot of very research-heavy channels like Philosophy Tube, hbomberguy, FD Signifier and others, it’s really easy to get bogged down and discouraged by that step in the process. So it’s totally okay to get your practice in by making videos that are more opinion-saturated, and steadily figure out how you can ethically work outside sources into your essays. If I learned anything from my university English paper-writing days, it’s that it’s far more important for you to bring your own original thoughts to the table and argue their own merits than it is to show how other academics might agree with you.

I was wondering, what did you use to make the helmet/visor for you Gabbro cosplay? It looks fantastic and I'm figuring out making one sometime next year. (Thanks in advance!)
Hey, thank you! So the materials that I used were:
- 10mm EVA foam for the helmet
-Helmet painted with FX flexible acrylic paint
- galvanized 14 gauge wire (from home Depot) for the antennae (and I 3d printed the antenna teaspoons from an online template). I made the antennae thicker and cartoonier by doubling them up and keeping them in place with a thinner silver crafting wire.
-to keep the antennae in place, I used mixture of hot glue and thermoplastic pellets stuffed into some thin PVC tubes I cut short and covered in thin EVA foam (for strength- those antennae can be heavy and I was afraid it would cut the EVA foam alone).
- A transparent protective document sleeve for the visor- you know those flexible but tough types you buy to protect art prints. I cut it with an x-acto until it matched the window shape in the helmet.
- For the reflective effect, I used one-way mirror window film, specifically this one, and squeegeed it onto the document sleeve. To get it glued into the helmet, I had to really carefully use a balance of hot glue to get it to stay and E6000 to get it to stay permanently. Be VERY careful about bubbles because this stuff loves to delaminate on curved surfaces.
To form the helmet shape, I basically made the shape I wanted using crumpled paper, cardboard, and tape, and then I made a template using cling wrap and duct tape on the model. There's quite a few tutorials for making EVA foam helmets online.
Let me know if you need any more details!
