Billy is driving down the PCH with the windows down of his new Chevy Malibu. The closest thing he could get to his beloved Camaro in looks, except the color. It's jet Black. It's the summer of 1993, and his radio is blasting music, he has a couple beers sitting on the passanger seat with groceries to take home and cook dinner for Steve when he gets home from work at his local preschool.

He's been teaching there and working with kids since they came to California and he got his license and teaching credentials. He always comes home either fresh with optimism or tired from chasing and teaching a haggle of energetic toddlers.

"Hey all you lovely listeners, Patrick here wishing you a great rest of your evening. I'm signing off and leaving you with this new tune by The Cranberries. Here is "Linger", for your listening pleasure", the man on the radio says. The sun is setting and the first couple notes of the song start to tinkle in through his speakers.

It's nice, not his usual ear drum rattling music but it's calming. The melody take him away and he starts thinking about Steve. His Steve. Tall and pretty, with moles decorating his face and arms and neck. 10 watt smile and sleepy almond eyes that light up when he sees Billy. The way he dances or wiggles to his favorite songs when they come up on the radio. He's sings beautifully, the boy has a set of pipes. He tells him this all the time.

"But I'm in too deep...you know I'm such a fool for you. You've got me wrapped around your finger".

He listens to the whole ballad, his arm rested on the window, as he feels the nice pacific salty breeze waft in. He gets home with a new pep on his step.

He hears it again that evening. He's stiring a pot with of chopped vegetables and melting butter. Watching them sizzle into a nice golden color. Steve is chopping up basil leaves and cherry tomatoes for their pasta. Billy always loves this, quality time they have. Cooking in comfortable silence. Sometimes Steve will talk about his day.

"Little Amy told me I'm her favorite teacher today, almost broke me down to tears". Or "Joshua called me Dad today, poor thing was beat red. I told him it was okay to make little mistakes like that".

Steve loves his kids, and Billy loves him for being there for them. He loves that Steve is giving these kids what he didn't have. A good supportive foundation. Lucky for him he still got it, even if I took some time. He's grateful to whatever higher power took mercy on him and sent him Steve.

"You've got me wrapped around your finger. Do you have to let it linger?"

Billy let's the music wash over him again. He turns the fire low so the vegetables don't burn. He takes the rag off his shoulder and sets it on the counter. He turns to face Steve's back and he hears him humming along. He must have already heard it before.

Billy holds his waist and turns him around so that their facing each other, "Billy?" And Billy takes the knife from Steve's hand and places it by the cutting board. "Whaaaats going on?" And Billy shrugs as he takes Steve's arms and places them over his shoulders. "Just wanted to dance with my favorite partner" he finishes that sentence into Steve's necks nuzzling his nose there to inhale Steve's scent. Shampoo and lavender body soap. "This song reminded me of you earlier".

Steve's laughs, "have you actually heard what she's singing! It's about a heartbreak, why would this remind you of me". Billy stops swaying for a bit and looks at Steve. "Weellll, there is one sentiment the song is right about though. I'm in too deep and you've got me stupid in love with you soo it still works right".

Steve throws his bead back in a laugh. "God and you say I'm a sap. I guess it's still kind of works." He captures Billy’s lips with his and he starts swaying them again and Billy’s follows the little circle motion. "I love you too you oaf". Billy smiles against his lips. Dinner is forgotten, until the smell of over cooked vegetables hits their noses, "shit Billy the veggies!!".
