Sophia Loren and Jayne Mansfield

The story goes that actress Sophia Loren was being welcomed to Hollywood by Paramount Pictures at a dinner party at Romanoff’s restaurant in Beverly Hills. Jayne Mansfield was the last person to arrive and was seated between Loren and her dinner companion Clifton Webb.

Overall, Loren was captured in several images staring at Mansfield’s exposed breasts. More than one photographer captured the moment; both Delmar Watson and Joe Shere caught Loren casting a glance from the corners of her eyes at Mansfield’s bust.

In November 2015, Loren described the dinner and incident in an interview with Entertainment Weekly: “Paramount had organized a party for me. All of the cinema was there, it was incredible. And then comes in Jayne Mansfield, the last one to come. For me, that was when it got amazing… She came right for my table. She knew everyone was watching. She sat down. And now, she was barely… Listen. Look at the picture. Where are my eyes? I’m staring at her nipples because I am afraid they are about to come onto my plate. In my face, you can see the fear. I’m so frightened that everything in her dress is going to blow—BOOM!—and spill all over the table.”

Cameos from the Spider-Verse

There are so many characters in the Spider-Man comics that I thought it'd be fun to just pick and choose from the whole crop of them for the fic's minor characters.

(Chapter numbers indicate their first mention/appearance.)

(1) Edward "Ned" Leeds, who runs the vegetable stand on 93rd This guy has had many iterations: Peter's co-worker at the Daily Bugle, the villain Hobgoblin, and more recently Peter's best friend in the MCU. In Gwen's dimension in Spider-Verse, he is a classmate who bullies Peter.

(1) Elizabeth "Betty" Brant, from across the road She is J. Jonah Jameson's secretary at the Daily Bugle. Throughout her comics history, she has been a love interest to Peter, Ned, and Flash Thompson. In Gwen's dimension, she is a member of her band ("I play drums.").

(1) Doris Urich, from Unit 22 The wife of Daily Bugle journalist Ben Urich, she is likely most familiar to audiences for her appearance in the Daredevil series on Netflix. I had to include the Urichs in the fic because I loved them on that show.

(1) Mary Jane Watson / Gloriana "Glory" Grant / Felicia Hardy, Gwen's band "The Mary Janes" Everybody knows MJ, of course. Glory, on the other hand, is one of comics!Peter's neighbors and later Betty Brant's replacement at the Daily Bugle. Felicia is the superhero known as Black Cat, who has been a nemesis as well as a love interest to Peter. In the Spider-Gwen comics, they are all members of the band. However, Felicia does not appear in the film.

(2) Julia Cornwall, the ballet teacher Cornwall was the maiden name of Julia Carpenter, the second Spider-Woman (after Jessica Drew) as well as the second Madame Web (after Cassandra Webb). I felt it was apt for a Spider-Woman to train two young Spider-People (in ballet!).

(5) Gilberto "Gil" Corazón, who owns the meat shop The single father of Anya Corazón (a.k.a. Araña / Spider-Girl), he is an investigative journalist.

(7) Yuriko Watanabe, the police officer Originally a member of the NYPD in the comics, she eventually becomes the vigilante superhero Wraith. In the film, she is George Stacy's field partner and appears in the Guggenheim sequence.

(8) Maya and Bhim Prabhakar, who own Prabhakar Tailors Pavitr Prabhakar's aunt and uncle, and the counterparts of May and Ben Parker in Spider-Man: India. Maya briefly appears in the Mumbattan sequence in the film.

(8) Delmar, who owns the candy shop An original character from the MCU, Delmar shows up in Spider-Man: Homecoming as the owner of Peter's favorite bodega.

(9) Margo Kess / Max Borne, Gwen and Miles' ballet classmates Just like in ATSV, comics!Margo (a.k.a. Spider-Byte) is also a VR superhero. Meanwhile, Max (a.k.a. Spider-Man 2211) is introduced in the comics as one of Miguel O'Hara's allies. He's the guy in the film who asks if there's web on his face.

(9) Anya Corazón, Gil's daughter Originally going by Araña, she later becomes known as Spider-Girl. One of her variants makes a cameo in the film, as the Spider who puts on the blue exoskeleton at the start of the chase scene.

At first glance it seems like something of an atypical choice of #Project for Clarke but then you realise that he isn't focused on the love affair alone at all; he keeps the camera at some length to take #In the whole scene and to study the subtextual issues; the way society cares for its elderly. Not everyone at the state run sheltered #Accommodation is as happy as our leads; not everyone has someone else (or family to visit them or even their full senses). The staff try #Their best headed by the excellent June Watson but there's only so much they can offer these people. And then... The end. I won't spoil it

I’ve been seeing fan theories that Mr. Delmar could be Mary Jane’s father in Spider-man: Far from Home. I’d like for them to still keep MJ’s backstory as an abuse survivor though, so what if Delmar is actually her uncle instead and she lives with him and his wife, Anna, away from her abusive father?

Over three months into 2021 and we are still living with so many of the challenges that carried over from 2020. Yes, even with a light gradually glowing more visible from the end of the tunnel, COVID still looms large over all of our lives, and many of the broader issues facing our world (racism, violence, sexism) will likely remain glaring problems that impact our days for the foreseeable future.

The owners of this Bondi terrace have lived in Sydney over a decade, but wanted the design of their home to reflect their Melbourne origins.

Full Of Grace Interiors was tasked with updating the home aesthetically, while also reconfiguring the ground floor to better utilise available space.

‘The original ground floor comprised numerous dead spaces, so the layout was reconfigured to introduce both informal and formal living and dining areas, with the addition of a rumpus room, a new bathroom, laundry, and guest bedroom,’ explains Therese Carrodus, interior designer and owner of Full Of Grace Interiors. 

The interiors draw on Melbourne design sensibilities both in their look and feel, allowing the clients to recreate cosy dinners previously spent in Melbourne, around an open fire. The dining room with its original Victorian fireplace captures this intent with its sumptuous built-in banquette seating, black timber detailing, fluted glass and subdued blue palette reminiscent of a Melbourne restaurant aesthetic.

Other spaces are light-filled and more relaxed, indicative of the home’s beachside setting. For example, the open-plan kitchen and living area is a refreshingly bright haven introducing natural light from the rear garden, while the bathroom and rumpus room showcases playful yet sophisticated blush hues (Dulux Basic Coral among them). There’s also dramatic moments facilitated in the ice green kitchen marble, and deep red deep-crimson velvet curtains in the guest bedroom.

‘I also wanted to reference the Bondi locale and climate by drawing in the natural light from the sun drenched rear garden and by selecting a palette that is relaxed and unpretentious,’ says Therese. ‘I like that each of the rooms has its own flavour.’ 

Executing this vision had its challenges, given the narrow site with no side or rear access, but has ultimately resulted in a home the clients adore. Therese describes the completed project as an ‘observation in colour, texture and light’ creating contrasting moods within zoned areas, while reflecting this family’s past and present.

Miss Gish believes that “an actress shouldn’t ruin a good man’s life by marrying him,” so she never married anybody.
