@hprecfest Day 2 - A Comfort fic
Regretfully Yours by @maria-de-salinas
Severus/ Petunia. Explicit.
The unexpectedly tender and intimate romance between Severus and Petunia - post the events of First War- tops this list. Maria has a way of writing care, intimacy with such loving attention to detail, it blows me away in all of her work. This also has a sequel!
Summary:
1981 was not Petunia's year. The day before New Year's Eve, determined to make a fresh start of it, she straps Harry and Dudley into the car and flees north--only to hit into the biggest snowstorm she's ever seen in her life. Grief-stricken and dazed by his pivot from Death Eater to teacher, Severus Snape spends his holiday far from everyone, wandering aimlessly through the snow. The last thing either of them wanted was their paths to collide, but when Petunia gets stuck in the snow, they'll get stuck with each other.
2. Not bright or noble, but almost sublime by @yletylyf
Severus/Sirius raising Harry. Explicit.
I remember talking to Lety when we connected in Snirius fandom: "Where are the fluffy fics? Where are the raising Harry fics?" Of course, Snirius fandom as a whole is interested in the tension and delicious angst of Sirius and Severus together, often veering to darker territories - so it was a relief when Lety started writing this! A very fun Snirius raising Harry story.
Summary:
On that fateful Halloween night in Godric's Hollow, Severus Snape and Sirius Black unite in a common cause: find the Secret-Keeper who betrayed their best friend. Or: A temporary truce turns into something much more.
3. The Dog and Deer Detective Agency by @artemisia-black
Sirius/OFC.
If you ever wanted to see Sirius Black in a noir-esque mystery, this is your fic. Not only is Artemisia good at building the luxuriant atmosphere for the foreboding story, this is a good exploration of Sirius in an alternate universe without threat of Voldemort. He is a freer version of the man you might see in canon, but still has that family baggage. There is also tons of baby Harry and Sirius cuteness (yes, that is my catnip- Harry and Sirius are my favourite dynamic in canon)
Summary:
Set in an AU where Voldemort is never born. James and Sirius are both the best of friends and brilliant wizards, and not wanting to be tied down to a 9-to-5, they founded a detective agency. A year in, they have had a steady business from scorned spouses until one day a woman arrives and draws them into a sinister plot in the Scottish Highlands.
sore subject by @incalculablepower
Lavendar Brown/Parvati Patil & Demelza Robbins/Parvati Patil
No one gets the romantic comedy #vibe of Half Blood Prince quite like Incalculable Power. This fic is special among her work because she captures an experience lot of queer women go through - an intense codependent friendship that is just waiting to edge into romance.
Summary:
The High Priestess, reversed. Trust your intuition. Your true self is waiting; she refuses to be contained for much longer.
Orchards by @whinlatter
Harry/Ginny.
Whinlatter dropped into the fandom with a 17k fic written about the summer Harry and Ginny fell in love, and it was utterly beautiful tribute to first loves, Harry, Ginny and also, the third character: the orchard. Even when the fic weaved in the grief Harry is still dealing with and references the war years, it is infused with hope for the future.
Summary:
The orchard is a wild, thousand-flower, crumpled-gate, fall-down-fence sort of place, where things grow that you’ve never asked for, that you’d never expect. The summer of ’96, the story of something flowery he thought he might have smelled at the Burrow.

Cheer
written for @hinnymicrofic
"Madam! Madam Robins!"
Sir Cadogan clanked into the painting above, doubled over and wheezing for breath.
"My- My lady," he addressed Demelza with a bow. "He is just passed the second floor landing!"
A little swoop of exhilaration backflipped through Ginny's stomach and she whirled around to stare at the portrait hole.
"Oi! He's almost here!" Demelza shouted above the crowd. "Cheer loud, okay? I want the bloody Slytherins in the dungeon to hear you!"
A riot of whoops and hollers met this announcement, the entire common room grinning and laughing in anticipation of Harry's arrival. Meanwhile, the rest of the team seemed to take it as a sort of directive. Peakes finished off his butterbeer and reached for two more. Katie had her scarf of paper chains at the ready. Ron grabbed the Quidditch Cup from the table and hoisted it in the air.
Ginny, however, found she had no preparation she needed to accomplish. Mostly, because she couldn't think past the pounding heartbeat in her ears.
She only knew that when the Fat Lady swung open and Harry appeared framed in the entrance, she pushed through the people closest to her and took off running...

Robin Ellis (Ross Poldark) has shared on his Facebook page that the original Poldark aired for the first time on October 5th, 1975.
He writes:
"...We had no idea that it would catch on as it did...With fond memories of a wonderful cast who were like a great, extended family. Thinking especially of those no longer with us: Angharad Rees, Ralph Bates, Richard Morant, Paul Curran, Mary Wimbush, Frank Middlemass, Forbes Collins - and of course, Winston Graham himself, and his wife Jean..."
Poldark ran for 29 episodes over two series on the BBC. Its audience peaked at 15 million, was sold to over forty countries, and it became the biggest selling costume drama on video until Pride and Prejudice (1995).

Brumous Sneak Peek!!
This sneak peek is unedited.
Chapter Thirty-Eight: A Serpent’s Gifts
It was the second dueling club meeting of the year. Harry was still trying to find his footing and not muck everything up. Staring at Ginny Weasley really wasn’t the most professional thing to do, considering he was in charge of the event. Tearing his gaze away from Ginny, he saw Marlene standing off to the side with Professor McGonagall. They were chatting and just observing, allowing the student leaders to do their own thing. Harry tapped his wand against his thigh, wondering just how much practice time he should give them before they switched to the next spell.
“Fuck me, I need to switch groups,” Ron grumbled, suddenly at his side. “The Ravenclaws are telling me I’m holding my bloody wand wrong! Even after I showed them the bloody picture in the textbook, they tried to tell me it was an outdated edition. Those smug little fuckers. They were third years!”
Harry squinted up at Ron, sucking in a breath. “Yeah, why don’t you team up with the Hufflepuffs. They’re nonconfrontational, so they shouldn’t make you angry.”
Ron leaned down, his lips close to Harry’s ear. “You know, the hat told me I would do well in Hufflepuff and I told it to fuck the right off. Then it told me I was clearly a Weasley and put me in Gryffindor.”
Harry laughed, his face splitting into a wide grin. “Are you serious, right now?”
Ron merely shrugged before he dashed off to the group of third or fourth year Hufflepuffs in the corner of the room. Sucking in a breath, he turned towards the Ravenclaws that Ron had been helping. He supposed it was his duty to go help them if Ron wouldn’t.
Harry made it halfway across the room when a scream sounded. Harry whipped around to see a tiny Hufflepuff on the floor, sobbing her little heart out. Crimson poured between her fingertips, her palm pressed tightly against her arm. Harry swallowed, dashing off towards her at full speed.
“Oops,” a cocky voice said.
Harry ignored the voice as he bent down in front of the girl. She must have been a first year because she looked so small. He placed a hand on her shoulder, something Sirius always did when he was upset, and leaned in close to her.
“What happened?” he asked.
“You motherfucker!” Demelza roared.
Harry’s head snapped to see Demelza pushing a rather burly Slytherin that he didn’t recognize. The boy barely moved, a cruel laugh escaping his lips. Harry was about ready to give him a piece of his mind when Ron stepped up to the kid, towering over him with his wand out.
“Mr Weasley!” Professor McGonagall shouted as she bustled over to the group. “Miss Robins! Mr Bulstrode!”
Harry turned his attention back to the small girl, forcing a smile on his lips. She was still sobbing, large tears pouring down her face.
“It hurts,” she said in a miserable tone.
Harry nodded. “Can I see?”
She shook her head, her wide and watery eyes staring up at him as though he had grown a second head.
“It was an accident!” a boy shouted angrily, whom Harry assumed was Bulstrode.
“Oh, yeah?” Demelza roared. “She’s bleeding you fucking prick!”
“Miss Robins!” McGonagall exclaimed.
A swoosh of red caught Harry’s attention as Ginny crouched on the other side of the small girl. Ginny knew exactly how to comfort the girl because she eased onto the floor next to her and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. Harry dropped his hand, watching the two of them intently.
“Hi, I’m Ginny,” she greeted before she gestured to Harry with her free hand. “That’s Harry. What’s your name?”
The girl sniffed. “Lucy.”
Ginny beamed. “Hi, Lucy. Professor McKinnon asked me to take you to the infirmary to get your arm looked at. She’ll be down in a few minutes after Bulstrode is dealt with. Is that okay? Harry can come too, if you want.”

since feeling is first who pays any attention — chapter two
Summary: Ginny has done her fair share of watching Harry over the years.
AO3 | FF.net
Note: Thank you all for the wonderful birthday wishes last time! Hope you enjoy a glimpse of Ginny during Prisoner of Azkaban!
ii.
Ginny leans out of the train window, the cold metal and glass pressing against her stomach, waving to Mum and Dad as the train speeds away. The wind whips strands of her hair into her face, but that has nothing to do with the tears that well in her throat. She swallows them down, waving harder until the train turns a corner and blocks her parents from view.
She tries hard to not feel like a cloud has blocked the sun.
Ron stops waving beside her and turns his head toward Harry and Hermione.
“Go away, Ginny,” says Ron suddenly. His voice isn’t unkind, but the words sting.
“Oh, that’s nice,” Ginny huffs.
Her eyes flicker to Hermione’s apologetic smile and then to Harry’s green eyes for just an unbearable second before she automatically looks away. She holds her breath, but neither says anything.
Right then. Ginny lifts her chin and stalks off, anger and sadness churning inside her.
You would think saving someone’s life might bring you closer to them. Form a bond, perhaps. But as always, that would be asking for too much, wouldn’t it? Instead, her embarrassment around Harry Potter has only worsened over time.
All summer, she bottled up the scorching Egyptian sunlight, letting it spread through her body to dispel a haunting coldness that resided in the darker corners under her skin. It was easy to block out what happened when she was surrounded by family; Dad’s warm hand on her head, Mum’s soft hugs, and even her brothers’ annoying hovering were a comfort.
Each day, blinding gratitude pulsed through her. Apparently nearly dying does that to you. Puts things in perspective; makes you hyper aware of all the things often taken for granted.
This summer was ablaze with life and love, each new breath a fresh flame.
But here, on the train clanging its way back to Hogwarts, a chill starts to seep back in. She puts one foot in front of another, away from Ron, Hermione, and Harry Potter.
The compartments are filled with happy students reuniting with their friends after a long summer. There are also the eager first years, bright eyed and flushed with excitement. Her heart sinks as she makes her way down the corridor. None of the compartments seems any more inviting than the last.
The sight of Fred and George’s hair sends a shot of hope through her, but they’re fully immersed with other members of the Gryffindor Quidditch team. Everyone is laughing, probably at something the twins said. They might be telling them about Egypt and how they tried to lock Percy in a tomb. She could join in, maybe do that impression of Percy that had them in stitches. She hesitates in front of the compartment window, wondering if they will notice her.
Go away, Ginny.
Stomach clenching, she goes on.
With dread, she nears the end of the train. That’s when she sees a few of her fellow second-year girls in a compartment, a mix of Gryffindor and Hufflepuff that she recognizes from Charms. She searches her mind for their names: Demelza, Robin, and…maybe Lucy? The empty spot next to Demelza signals that there’s enough space for her.
All Ginny needs to do is open the door and ask. It’s easy, she tells herself, even as her heart starts to pound. It’s easy.
But she can’t move.
What if they ask about the things she doesn’t remember? The memories she longs to forget? The nightmares she can’t escape?
One of the girls throws her head back in silent laughter, the sound swallowed up by the train’s engine and metal sliding over metal.
Cold slips down Ginny’s back like a shard of ice, even though her skin feels unbearably hot. The overwhelming juxtaposition of hot and cold makes her sick.
She stumbles forward, unseeing, bashing her elbow against the food trolley as it pushes past. The glimpse of the trolley witch’s wide-eyed gaze that only makes her chest seize with more panic. Her breathing sounds labored and harsh to her ears, like the air can’t get through her tightened throat. She slides open the door to the loo and shoves herself inside, her numb fingers fumbling against the lock until it takes.
She leans over the small sink, feeling the blood pumping through her veins. She wants to scream, she wants to cry. Fighting back the urge, she bites her quivering lip, refusing to give in. Not now, not here, not again.
Focus, Ginny.
Her eyes cast about, trying to find an anchor, but when they land on her reflection, she knows it was a mistake as she grazes against an unwanted memory—hollow eyes staring back, bright blood on her hands that won’t come off. She slams her eyes shut. Flashes of icy fear and hot shame flare through her aching chest.
She focuses on the memory of Bill in Egypt, the way the sun glinted on his fang earring, the soft warmth in his eyes behind his familiar smile.
Focus, he said, leading her through a dark tomb. His steady hands guided hers through the motion of new spells. Ginny was never afraid of the dark, but that was before nightmares that had her waking to strangled screams, sounds of hisses and laughter ringing in her ears. Trust yourself; you’ll find the way out.
That sunlight in the darkness.
Her breath finally evens out. Her legs are shaky, and she slumps back on the closed toilet lid. She feels drained, weak.
The sweat on her brow begins to cool her overheated skin. How long has she been here?
It dawns on her where she is. A short laugh escapes her lips, echoing in the loo.
A flicker of anger stirs her blood. She has spent enough of her time alone in girls’ loos, a shell of the person she used to be.
Ginny spent a year under the thumb of the darkest wizard in the world, fading with each day.
Nothing else will ever compare.
She won’t let Tom take more from her. He has already taken too much. Steeling herself, she stands and opens the door.
Before she can head back toward Demelza’s compartment, the train jolts to a hard stop. The momentum topples her over. Her hands feel tender and raw against the train floor. Sounds of students yelping and thuds of luggage falling in disarray fill the air.
Without warning, the lanterns go out, throwing the entire train into darkness. Everything goes quiet.
That momentary strength inside Ginny flickers.
The inky blackness sends her heart racing. For all the sunlight she has tried to trap inside her, the fear creeps back in whenever the sun dips beyond the horizon. Stupid little girl. She hates proving Tom right, but she hasn’t been able to sleep alone since the Chamber. The only thing that has helped is sneaking into Ron’s room. He always opens the door without a word, his face drawn. He doesn’t tease her, even if she cries. Even if she screams in her sleep. Aside from Harry Potter, Ron is the closest one who knows the pipes, the freefall, the plunging darkness.
Ginny gags. It’s almost as if she’s choking on the rotting stench of Basilisk skin.
Ron.
Through the eerie silence, a compartment door opens and—is that Harry’s voice?
Ginny blindly hurries toward the voices, her screaming instincts guiding her. Her fingers pull a door open, but then someone slams right into her, and they let out two squeals of pain.
“Who’s that?”
“Who’s that?” she returns.
“Ginny?”
Relief makes Ginny weak. “Hermione?”
“What are you doing?”
“I was looking for Ron—”
“Come in and sit down—”
Ginny rushes into the pitch-black compartment, her knees buckling under her. She immediately sits, but the seat is surprisingly bony and warm.
“Not here! I’m here!” says Harry, his voice squeaky.
Her system overloads with embarrassment. Did she just sit on Harry bloody Potter?
She leaps up and trips over a pair of legs.
“Ouch!” says a boy she doesn’t recognize.
She finally falls into a miraculously empty seat when a wizard shouts, “Quiet!”
Her heart pounds in her throat. What is an older wizard doing here?
There is a soft click and light floods their surroundings, revealing a ragged, tired-looking wizard holding a handful of flames.
“Stay where you are,” he orders, as if Ginny came here only to leave. But before he can move, the door slowly slides open again, and she can’t help but think surely this compartment can’t fit yet another.
She smells something putrid before she sees anything. But as a darkly hooded figure appears at the door, the smell of decay intensifies. It draws a long, slow, and rattling breath, as if to suck in more than air from the environment.
An intense cold overtakes her. It penetrates deeper than her skin, straight to her core. It’s so cold, it radiates from within her. To her horror, she recognizes this feeling.
It’s the painful drawing of a soul from her body.
Ginny gasps. It sounds like a wet sob, but the air is so cold it hurts to breathe. That lack of air makes her body shake.
It’s like she’s back in the Chamber, helplessly sobbing and pleading. Tom leers down at her, turning more solid the colder she becomes. Panic surges through her, amplifying her tremors.
Destroy the diary, her mind screams, but her hand refuses to move no matter how she tries.
In the weak light, Harry falls from his compartment seat, and her heart seizes up in despair.
Her vision blurs. Everything is a wash of fluid dark watercolors. Harry, lying on the Chamber floor, unmoving, blood pooling around him.
“Never trust anything that can think for itself if you can't see where it keeps its brain,” Dad said, but what does where it keeps its brain have to do with anything? A person turned monster created that diary.
Is there anything she can trust?
A thick white fog swirls inside, dragging her down. Her body descends to the damp floor, the cold seeping into the back of her robes feels warmer than her own skin—
The intense cold starts to recede, and noises return to her muffled ears. The horrific thing has drifted away, the wizard standing guard at the door, his wand still raised and ready. The lanterns flicker back on, and the floor begins to shake underneath them once again.
Slowly, Ginny begins to register activity. Almost from afar, she watches as Ron slaps a ghastly pale Harry, trying to wake him. How is it that everyone else can move?
Colin Creevey, Mrs. Norris, Nearly Headless Nick, Justin Finch-Fletchley, Penelope Clearwater, Hermione Granger, and now—Harry Potter is dead.
He’s dead and it’s all my fault.
But then Harry stirs. His green eyes blink open, and thick tears blur her vision once more.
“What happened?” he asks, voice small.
Ginny makes a strangled noise, her freezing hand covering her mouth. He’s alive. She doesn’t know what happened to the hooded figure, but Harry Potter is alive, they aren’t in the Chamber, and Tom is gone.
These realizations don’t seem to be enough to stop the tremors still shaking through her. Her body doesn’t seem prepared to recover yet.
She huddles her knees closer as she chokes back a sob. She hears someone coming over and then feels someone’s—Hermione’s—arm around her. She needs to get a hold of herself; later, she will feel hot shame over falling apart in front of Ron’s friends, yet again proving she doesn’t belong. But right now she feels raw and hollowed out, and she can’t help but lean into the warm touch and comfort.
Eventually, she pulls herself together enough to force down some chocolate. It helps, but she can’t shake the lingering chill.
She glances through her lashes, guiltily, at Harry. He was the only one affected worse than her, and she wonders if he thought of anything or anyone, Tom’s laugh, Basilisk blood. She wants to ask, but he doesn’t look her way. He stares out the window as rain runs past the pane, a haunted look in his eyes.
Ginny bites her tongue and looks away.

I’ve decided that I should not be completely sober while watching Robin of Sherwood. I’ve also decided that part of the reason I find it so odd is that it features historically grounded specifics while being the most unhinged adaptation I have ever seen.
On the one hand, we have:
monks collecting rents
poll tax jokes
legal system jokes!
functional village economies
grain distribution drama
English Jews who exist
On the other hand, there’s conflation of secular and ecclesiastical law (NOPE), monks who hate medicine rather than practicing it (whyyyy), and outlaws who have apparently all just converted to the worship of Herne the Hunter (this is never discussed.) Also the entire plot of episode 3 is... there’s an accused witch.
Tumblr media
To the credit of the “witch” (played by Demelza from Original Poldark) her reaction is basically “I’m not a witch, I’m not a witch!” Spoiler alert: she’s not a witch.
Meanwhile, Marian is complaining that she had more freedom in Kirklees Abbey than in the greenwood, and... of course she did! Why is she surprised? Also I find it more hilarious than I should that we actually get a plot arc about Marian and Robin meeting, becoming lovers, and then getting to know each other. I find it even more hilarious that Little John is firmly #TeamMarian in this situation.

Written in Stone
Written in Stone https://ift.tt/gLe4hNc by Samheliad Hermione tucked her chin further into the scarf around her neck, feeling the wool against her cheeks and lips, wishing it had been plush enough to bury her nose into as well. The air in the Forbidden Forest this evening was cold, in that sour, damp sort of way that clings to your pores. “We should be coming up on it in just a moment”, she whispered softly over her shoulder to the sleek blonde wizard who followed. She shivered. Cold had always been the most intolerable sensation she couldn’t stand. It felt like all of her nerves were screaming at once. She’d been crucio’d during the war a handful of times and she wasn’t sure if her memory had muted the pain from it, or if she actually might have preferred that over the frigid air. Draco’s footsteps behind her were slow, precise, and deliberate if not simultaneously fluid that sent its own chill up her spine. He was practically prowling like he was the deadliest thing in these woods tonight. .............. Words: 3667, Chapters: 2/?, Language: English Fandoms: Harry Potter - J. K. ASC Sneak Peek!
Chapter 338 -- The One Where Ron Wants A Massage
Ron nodded.  “Good.  You two want to come back to the Head dorm?”
Harry licked his bottom lip.  “Erm…”
Ron rolled his eyes.  “Seriously?  You two were late for practice because you were bloody shagging.”
“Well…”
“Bloody randy sots,” Ron mumbled under his breath.
Harry grinned.  “Gotta help my star Chaser keep her muscles relaxed for her tryout.  Massages are great for that.”
“Where’s my massage, Captain?”  Ron said, lifting an eyebrow.  “I’ve got this kink just here in my shoulder blade.”
Harry turned to look at where Ron was pointing and kneaded his hand over it.  “Here?”
“Ooh, fuck yeah.  Ugh… yeah, that feels great.  I think I moved wrong on the last goal and just felt it pinch up.”
Harry applied a bit more pressure, massaging his friend’s shoulder with his fingers.  “Good?”
“Mmm,” Ron said.  “Can you rub me down a bit lower, mate?”
Harry’s hand lowered just under his shoulder blade, kneading.  “Good?”
“Mmm, yeah, that’s good.  Rub it just there… ah, yeah, just like that…”
Demelza stopped in front of them, her eyes wide.  “What did I walk into?”
Harry dropped his hand from Ron’s shoulder and back and Ron scowled.
“Not that,” Ron said.  “Get your mind out of the gutter, Robins!  We were talking about massages.”
“On each other?”  Demelza asked.  “I could be interested in helping with that.  Is there oil?  Will you both be naked?”
“Why are Harry and Ron naked?”  Ginny asked, slipping her arm around her boyfriend’s waist.
“They want to massage each other and I volunteered to help as long as they were both naked.”
“We didn’t,” Harry began, his cheeks heating.  “I was telling Ron that I wanted to give you a massage.”
“Didn’t sound like that to me,” Demelza said.  “Honestly, Ginny, it sounded like they were making plans to rub one out on each other.”
“How come every time Harry and I make plans, you somehow make it sound dirty, Robins?”  Ron demanded.
“It’s a gift.”
“Well, I could use a massage,” Ron insisted.  “I’m quite stiff.”
Demelza raised an eyebrow.  “Well, I think that you better ask your girlfriend for help with that, Weasley.  Though I would definitely be interested in watching our captain rub out your stiff one.”
Ron shot up two fingers in response.  “Massage, not a bloody handjob!”
She winked at him.  “Too bad.”
