Headmate Verbality Coining Post
[pt: Headmate Verbality Coining Post /end pt]
Bodily nonverbal systems have stated that nonverbal is a term exclusive to those who are bodily unable to speak at all times. As such, these exist now.
Nonvocal - a headmate who is never able to speak regardless of the body's verbality
Semivocal - a headmate who is only able to speak a little regardless of the body's verbality
Demivocal - a headmate who is only able to speak some regardless of the body's verbality
Vocal - a headmate who is able to speak a "normal amount" regardless of the body's verbality
Hypervocal - a headmate who speaks more than most people regardless of the body's verbality
Vocalflux - a headmate whose ability to speak changes regardless of the body's verbality
I don't care who uses these, just know they were made by a pro-endo! :D

So this is kinda random but I haven't seen a definition for "choice verbal" in an autistic context ANYWHERE, nor have I seen a list of all of the verbal labels for autistic people, so here's a list in order (imo) of least-most verbal. Also, this is speaking in general terms, so don't come at me saying "well in this context this verbal label can also mean..." because likely I know that already and I'm just trying to keep the definitions as all-encompassing as possible.
(Also a quick disclaimer: most autistic people can temporarily lose speech occasionally due to shutdowns or other reasons, regardless of their usual verbal status.)
Nonverbal- unable to speak at all, ever, or having extreme difficulties in doing so, therefore making AAC a more comfortable option in most cases.
Limited-verbal- using spoken language in limited settings and purposes
Semi-verbal- only being able to speak in specific circumstances OR showing moderate difficulty speaking most of the time; some use AAC & some don't.
Verbalflux- people who fluctuate between full-verbal, semi-verbal, & limited-verbal
Demiverbal-
- Can reliably speak most of the day for most days of the week
- Verbal shutdowns happen anywhere from a few times a week to a few times a month, possibly for no apparent reason
- May experience some level of difficulty with mouth words, anywhere between slight difficulty only a little of the time to half the time
Choice verbal- Having the full ablility to speak (with the exception of autistic shutdowns and the like), but choosing not to speak in uncomfortable and/or overwhelming situations due to significant overwhelm, lack of understanding social cues, or other reasons.
Full-verbal- Having the full ablility to speak (with the exception of autistic shutdowns and the like), and choosing to do so as much as they are comfortable. (The same as most neurotypical/allistic people.)
Hyperverbal- Having the full ability to speak (with the exception of autistic shutdowns and the like), and (wether by choice or on accident) speaking more often than verbal autistics/allistic people.
Feel free to tell me if I got anything wrong or if I missed anything! (Pls no hate, though, and use tone tags!)

So, I don’t really fit the term semiverbal, but I definitely don’t fit as a fully verbal autistic either. Because of this, I’ve been thinking of what a good term would be for sorta verbal (aka can reliably talk a decent amount of the time, but also has plenty of verbal shutdowns, and a little trouble speaking in a way that’s usually not all that hindering when able to speak) autistic. I decided on demi-verbal and think this sums up my experiences pretty well. I’ve never seen demi-verbal anywhere and searching for it brought up nothing.
Demi-verbal:
Can reliably speak most of the day for most days of the week
Verbal shutdowns happen anywhere from a few times a week to a few times a month, possibly for no apparent reason
May experience some level of difficulty with mouth words, anywhere between slight difficulty only a little of the time to half the time
Please respect nonverbal/non-speaking and semiverbal/semi-speaking autistics and listen when they tell you not to use (and thus misuse) a word/words that was coined specifically for nonverbal/non-speaking and/or semiverbal/semi-speaking autistics. Those words/terms were coined for a reason.

About your latest post on AAC, i was just wondering what demiverbal means. I'm not disagreeing with your opinions, i am just very curious.
I'm a completely nonverbal autistic person who uses AAC, and i still agree that everyone can use AAC if they really need to or heck, if they really want to.
Hey anon! You know, I can’t find a consistant definition of demiverbal. I’ve heard it around and the one definition that really suck was “not quite verbal, not quite semiverbal” just somewhere in the middle.
Apparently it was a term coined for people who didn’t quite feel like they were semiverbal. That’s the definition I’ve heard and someone can correct me if I’m wrong!
If I have any demiverbal followers then input what it means to you!

Hey can semi verbal beings — especially ones who can get more 'talkative' — help me out with something? I've been struggling with verbal labels, as I don't know where I lay. The best way I can describe my ability to speak is being 'set off' which can either be positive or negative, and I'll speak a lot (or at least it feels like a lot for me. It feels like a warm up where I'll notice my vocal cords burning after a bit like an overheated engine). Otherwise I'm mostly a listener and will answer in short sentences. I also experience verbal shutdowns, where I can push through if I really have to (I've gotten better at this over the years). I've always been like this the more I think about it; I've had someone say that I 'never felt the need to fill the silence' and I was always predisposed to just... not speaking in class but I don't know if that's because I was pushed away by my peers often and just gave up lol.
I've considered demiverbal and even verbal flux, but that doesn't quite feel right either. I'm like a blend of demi and semi verbal and I've been calling myself semiverbal for a bit, but I keep feeling like I don't struggle enough to fit that label. So yeah, that's my situation lol, I would like some help with this and even consolation.

Hi momo! So, I have a question on what are good terms to refer to someone who is regularly speaking but it's exhausting, sometimes cannot speak, and has a disconnect between their brain and mouth. I'm autistic, low-mid support needs, and I just had someone yell at me on tiktok for using nonverbal to describe those situations. I will say I did not take it well after they went from the comment section of a video to harassing me on my videos, just bc I've had people not take my disability seriously and I'm not in autistic spaces bc online communities stress me out most of the time. So, after reading through articles and posts on tumblr (which I feel more safe on), what do you think describes my experience? Bc I don't identify with selective mutism
Hello friend! First how is you? Hope is well ^_^
Ok so, first momo understand feel and think know what mean! Basically nonverbal people prefer we (semiverbal, full verbal, etc) use terms like "verbal shutdown" or "speechless episode"!
"Mouth and brain dissconnect" this sound lot like apraxia but apraxia is constant state as far as momo know! Could also be just shutdown/post-meltdown speech loss.
To describe verbality as whole momo would advice search up "demiverbal" or "verbalflux"! There some other verbal terms that momo not can recall right now tho, that may even apply :D
Momo not judge use nonverbal term in past specially if want learn because momo was like that too! Momo used be very stubborn about it actually :0 was tumblr friends who educate momo :)
Remember momo not professional or inside you head tho! So please reseach before :)
Hope is help, friend !
