~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He had never meant to like her, to actually like the girl. Sure, he had occasionally thought she was rather pretty, even for a Mud- No, no... Draco quickly shook his head, suddenly finding that he couldn't quite finish the thought, a rare occurrence for someone like him. Gritting his teeth, one of his hands clenched into a tight fist atop the table, as he snuck another glance over at Granger.
She was sitting at one of the far tables in the school library, poring over a massive text in front of her, her attention totally occupied. Her lips were parted slightly, occasionally forming the words of whatever it was she was reading. Draco found himself quite unable to look away from those perfect little rosebud lips...
An intrusive thought suddenly snuck its way into Draco's head: "What would it feel like to touch those lips with his own, to be able to kiss Granger...?" Draco shook his head again, though his eyes remained focused on the Gryffindor girl. She was rather attractive, if Draco honestly had to admit it to himself.
A few stray remnants of a memory flitted through Draco's mind, images of Granger in that frilly pink dress at the Yule Ball during fourth year. He hadn't wanted to admit it out loud then, (nor would he have ever actually done so back then), but she had looked... Radiant. Not like her usual bookish self.
Draco ran his fingers through his hair with a sigh, which abruptly caught Granger's attention, much to his dismay. The two stared at each other for a few seconds, until Draco impulsively made a face at the girl. She merely rolled her eyes at him, her attention once more returning to the thick tome in front of her. Ugh, why had he done that??
Draco quietly groaned, running a hand over his face. Of course this wouldn't be easy, not by any means! With another soft grumble to himself, Draco slid his chair back, rising from his seat and striding over to Granger's table, trying his hardest to be as casual about it as possible.
Upon his arrival, the Gryffindor girl looked up, a wary sigh slipping from between those perfect lips of hers, her eyes holding a rather tired expression in them. As Draco stood there, he suddenly realized that he had never actually bothered to notice just how... Pretty? Yes, pretty... Granger's eyes were. They were a warm, soft brown, deeply inviting and kind at the best of times.
Draco was so busy staring at Granger like an idiot that he didn't even realize she had spoken to him until a few moments later, when she arched one dark brow at him. "Er... What?" he asked, a bit of color appearing in his cheeks. "I said, what do you want, Draco?" she repeated slowly, as if speaking to a toddler who didn't quite understand.
Any other time, this would have earned Granger one of Draco's infamous sneers, followed by a few hurtful words and a parting threat. But this time, there was something different about the way she spoke to him, about the way she said his name, that really stuck with him. And to his slight horror, Draco found himself wanting to hear his name coming out of Granger's mouth again, even if just once more.
Swallowing hard, he adopted a casual expression, one of his shoulders lifting in a shrug. "What are we reading?" he asked, nodding down at the thick book on the table. She rolled her eyes at him, tugging the book closer to her, though he could swear he saw one corner of her mouth twitch up in a brief smile.
"We are not reading anything. I, however, am just catching up on a bit of light reading for Charms Class this year." she answered. Draco tried not to smirk as he eyed the huge book now clutched in Granger's hands. "That's light?" he thought, but instead, he blurted out the only other thing that came to mind. "If you need help, maybe we can work something out."
He knew even as he said the words that it would be pointless; practically everyone in the entire school knew just how smart Granger really was, and just how little help she actually required with her studies. Still, the words left Draco's mouth before he could stop them. And as he stood there watching, the Gryffindor girl's lips parted slightly, her eyes widening a little in what could only be surprise.
"You... You're being nice to me." she said slowly. "Way to state the obvious!" Draco's inner thoughts retorted, but he shut them down as quickly as they'd appeared, instead continuing to stand there and stare at her expectantly. "Why?" she added, half a minute later. His expression turned to one of slight confusion, though a faint ghost of a smile crept across his face.
"Does there always need to be an ulterior motive, Granger?" he asked, amused. That eyebrow arched up again, as she leaned forward in her seat, closing the book rather loudly and staring up at Draco with her hands folded neatly in front of her. "I don't know. You tell me, Malfoy." she shot back, imitating his use of her last name.
There it was again, that little thrill that ran down Draco's spine, made him feel... Alive. Why was he reacting so strangely like this?? It's not like he and Granger would ever be friends... Right? "You could be, if you let her in..." his thoughts unhelpfully chimed in again. "No, we couldn't." Draco mumbled, before he could stop himself.
"I'm sorry?" Granger asked, that eyebrow still raised. Merlin, she must think he was an absolute idiot, standing here talking to himself! With an irritated sigh, Draco shook his head. "Nothing. Don't worry about it. I just... Yeah." he finished lamely, his cheeks reddening in embarrassment.
With that, he abruptly turned and made a hasty exit out of the library. Too eager to escape his own discomfort, Draco wasn't paying enough attention to notice how Granger's eyes followed him as he left the library, one corner of her mouth turning up in an amused little grin...
"I'm telling you, it was... Odd. I've never seen him look so bothered before!" Hermione recalled with a slight grin, later that night in the Gryffindor Common Room. "Maybe he's officially gone round the twist." her friend, Ron Weasley, piped up from one of the armchairs by the fireplace.
Hermione couldn't help the small laugh that escaped her at that moment, though she soon found herself feeling a little guilty afterwards. "Oh, I shouldn't laugh, really. He did seem like he was genuinely trying to be nice." she sighed. Her other friend, the infamous Harry Potter, spoke up from one of the other armchairs. "Maybe. I still don't trust him, though. He's one of them." he said.
Hermione couldn't help the small, irritated noise she made. "Oh, not this again, honestly!" she groaned. "What?" Ron asked. With another sigh, the Gryffindor girl turned to face her friend. "Harry keeps insisting that Draco Malfoy is now a Death Eater." she said with a roll of her eyes. "You saw it too." Harry pointed out, for what felt like the millionth time since the start of the school year.
"Like I've told you, I don't know what I saw. Besides, is Draco kind of a bully? Yes. But would he honestly murder someone in cold blood, like the rest of their lot? No." Hermione said. But even as she spoke the words aloud, a feeling of uncertainty settled within her. How could she be one hundred percent sure that Draco wouldn't actually kill anyone?
Almost as if voicing the girl's concerns, Harry scoffed. "Hermione, please! Don't tell me you're actually defending the git??" he said, exasperated. For once, Hermione found that she didn't have the usual smart comeback, the usual logical answer to this. But deep down, she already knew the answer, even if she wasn't entirely willing to voice it aloud.
"I'm off to bed. You two should do the same. Goodnight." she said curtly, getting up from the couch and heading towards the stairs leading to the girls' dormitories. Behind her, as she climbed the first few steps, she could hear Harry mutter to Ron, "You don't think she's gone round the twist, has she?"
A lone spark of irritation suddenly ignited deep within Hermione; these two didn't even know what they were talking about. They hadn't been there in the library today; they hadn't seen Draco practically stumble over his words trying to talk to her. They hadn't seen what she had seen: someone who very desperately needed a friend, someone to talk to, anyone to talk to.... Someone who, given the chance, could even perhaps be worthy of love, real love...
Tumblr media
There she was again, this time sitting on one of the benches in the Northwest courtyard, near the huge willow tree he used to sit in during fourth year. Ah, fourth year... Those same images of a strikingly pretty witch in pink dress robes once again replayed themselves in Draco's head, and before he could stop himself, a lazy sort of smile had crossed over his face.
But his good mood was short-lived. Right as he had taken a step towards Granger, he heard a voice behind him, one he absolutely loathed with every fibre of his being. "Don't even think about it, Malfoy. You stay away from her." Potter said. A muscle in Draco's jaw twitched as he turned around, the smile dropping from his face.
"What's it to you, Potter?" he spat, suddenly irritated. Who did this absolute prat think he was, telling him who he could and couldn't speak to?? Potter's green eyes narrowed as they shifted behind Draco to glance for a second at Granger, before returning to meet his own cold gaze. "I mean it. Leave her alone. She doesn't need to be seen with somebody like you." Potter continued.
The nerve of this... This utter child...! "I think that's for Granger to decide, thanks." Draco retorted, turning around and taking another step towards the Gryffindor girl in the distance. Before he could get too far, however, he felt something hit him in the back. Turning around and looking down at the ground, he saw... A rock. Really?? A smirk settled on Draco's face, but there was no genuine humor in it.
"Throwing rocks at me? What are you, Potty, five? Pathetic." Draco sneered. "Leave her alone." the dark-haired boy said again. And then to Draco's complete amusement, Potter held up both of his fists, taking a warning stance. A short laugh rose up from Draco's throat as he took a step towards the boy.
"Really, Potty? You want to settle this like a fucking Muggle?? Fine by me. Maybe you'll fight better than your parents did." Draco laughed. He knew even as he said the words that they would hit deep, they would hurt... But Draco didn't care. How dare Potter speak on Granger's behalf, like she didn't have a perfectly lovely mind of her own??
The smile dropped from his face again as he closed the distance between him and Potter, his right hand curling into a fist. The next few minutes went by in a blur, an absolutely chaotic whirlwind of punches being thrown, voices loudly cheering on the fight, and more than a little blood being spilled.
By the time Weaselbee and a few other Gryffindors had managed to pry Potter away from Draco, the damage had already been done. Draco was now sporting a few deep cuts on his face, as well as a black eye and a split lip. But at least he didn't look as bad as the other boy did.
Potter's face was a mural of cuts and bruises and blood, all the handiwork of one pissed off Draco Malfoy. The boy in question couldn't help the smirk that appeared on his face, though he winced when it pulled at the edges of his busted bottom lip. He took a step towards Potter, spitting out some blood on the ground in front of him.
"Don't you ever make decisions for Granger without her permission again! She can think for herself, you prat!" Draco hissed, before turning and storming off towards one of the covered archways leading back towards the school. As he passed by Granger's bench, he saw her get up, out of the corner of his eye.
Great, now she was going to see him at his worst, if she hadn't already. She caught up with him fairly quickly, somewhat pointedly ignoring the protests of Potter and Weaselbee in the distance behind her. The two of them turned down a hallway, neither of them saying anything, until finally Draco couldn't take it anymore.
"Go on, then. Say it. I know you're going to." he muttered. Granger was quiet beside him for a moment, until he finally heard her voice, speaking softly. "You don't know, actually. But enlighten me, anyway." she murmured. "Say it." Draco repeated, a little more insistent. "Tell me that I'm an absolute idiot, and that Potter had every right to hit me." he continued.
Another moment of silence passed, before she spoke up. "Alright, fine, if that's what you want to hear. Draco Malfoy, you are an absolute idiot." Granger announced. "But," she continued a second later, her voice a little quieter, "you're also wrong. He had no right to do what he did. You were only defending me."
Draco stopped dead in his tracks, his heart skipping a few beats. Very slowly, he turned to face Granger, his eyes widening. "You... Y-you heard? You knew?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper. She shrugged, one corner of her mouth lifting in a wry sort of smile. "He's not exactly subtle. Besides, I could sort of tell what happened, based on what I saw." she answered.
Draco didn't know how to process this. He had just beaten Potter to a near bloody mess, and yet... Granger was seemingly unbothered by it?? What the ever loving fuck was going on, here?? Swallowing hard, Draco tried to put on his usual cocky demeanor, but of course, Granger saw right through him. "You're still an idiot." she pointed out, as the two of them started walking again.
Draco's mouth twitched up in a smirk, some of his former bravado returning. "Yeah? Suppose it's lucky for me then, that you're as smart as you are." he retorted with a wink. "Otherwise we'd both be fucked." he added in a loud whisper. At that moment, Draco could swear he heard Granger laugh, before the girl quickly disguised it as a cough.
"Pity for you, I suppose." she shot back, fighting to keep the smile from her face. Draco let out a low whistle, glancing sideways at the Gryffindor girl. "Why, Granger, how touching. And here I didn't think you cared." he said, smirking again. She rolled her eyes at this, though that smile still tugged at the corners of her mouth as she tried to keep a straight face.
"I have no idea what you're talking about, Draco." she said. There it was again, his name coming out of her mouth. If he let down all of his walls he had built up over the years, it didn't sound so bad, hearing her talk so easily with him like this. It was even... Pleasant.
"You know, you really should have Madam Pomfrey fix that for you." Granger suddenly added, gesturing up at his face with one dainty little hand. Draco fought back against the overwhelming urge to take that hand in his, to hold it within his own. Instead, he swallowed hard before shrugging, trying to hold onto some of his former cockiness.
"Nah, too far of a walk. Why don't you do it?" he drawled lazily. At this, Granger abruptly stopped walking, and it was a few moments before Draco had realized this. Turning back around, he stared at the place where she still stood, her dark brows furrowed and a frown marring her pretty face.
"Granger, what's the holdup? Let's go." he said, but she didn't move, instead continuing to stand there, an expression of pure confusion on her face. "I don't understand." she whispered. Heaving a sigh, Draco walked back over to where she stood, stopping in front of her. He was only vaguely aware that he and Granger were the only two people in this corridor at the moment, but he didn't care.
"What don't you understand?" he asked slowly. She looked up at him then, big brown eyes full of confusion and innocence and even a shred of wariness. "You. I don't understand it. Why are you being so nice to me, it's not like you..." she whispered. Her words were an echo of yesterday's, in the library: "You're being nice to me. Why?"
Draco sighed, before running a hand through his hair. "Like I told you yesterday, does there always need to be an ulterior motive?" he asked. The girl's frown deepened, her brows knitting together and the expression in her eyes growing a little pained at his words.
"But that's just it. It's always a game with you, only the rules seem to change all the time. I don't know where I stand with you, Draco." she whispered. Draco's heart nearly stopped in his chest; did she really not get it? Did she really not understand? "But what if it's not? What if I'm tired of the game, of... This?" he asked, gesturing down at himself.
Granger still looked confused; heaving a sigh, Draco hesitantly reached out with one hand, tucking a loose lock of hair behind the girl's ear. "Read between the fucking lines, Granger. Maybe I'm tired of it, all of it. Being the school bully, having people fear me when they look at me... Maybe it's time for a change." he sighed.
"And maybe," he added in a softer tone, gently walking forward until Granger's back was against the wall, "just maybe... I actually don't think you're all that bad... Hermione." He could hear her breath hitch in her throat at the sound of her first name coming out of his mouth, he could see the miniscule movement as she stood there staring up at him with those wide, warm brown eyes.
He could feel it radiating off her, all of it: the longing, the warring confusion, even the sweet tang of curiosity. He recognized it, welcomed it, even. Because it was all the same things he was feeling, in that moment. Once again, that intrusive thought from yesterday crept back into his head, as he stared down at Granger, his hands pressed against the wall on either side of her, effectively trapping her. "What would it feel like to kiss Granger?"
And then it happened. Before Draco even knew what the hell he was doing, he had leaned down, closing the distance between himself and the petite Gryffindor girl, his mouth on hers in an instant. He was kissing her like nobody else had likely ever done, like he was drowning and she was the one thing that could save him, the one single breath of air soothing the burning ache in his lungs, in his heart, in every part of himself.
He knew it would only be a matter of time before she pushed him away, demanding to know just what the hell he had been thinking, how could he, how dare he... But no. Heavens, no. Instead, to his complete surprise, she kissed him back, seemingly with a passion and fire to rival that of his own.
Her mouth worked insistently, almost desperately, against his own, and was that her teeth tugging his bottom lip...? Holy Salazar, she was good...! Draco groaned, pressing himself closer against Granger... No, against Hermione...
He closed the final bit of distance between the two of them, one of his hands moving down to lightly grip at the small of her back, his other hand winding its way through the hair at the back of her head, holding her closer to him. He could have sworn he heard the tiniest of moans slip unbidden from her throat, but it was quickly swallowed up as Draco continued to kiss her like his life depended upon it.
Only when the pair pulled apart to catch their breath did he hear her breathlessly whisper to him, "You do realize anyone could turn the corner and see us like this? What would they say?"
Draco discovered with a sudden burst of realization that he didn't actually care anymore. Had this little encounter happened three years ago, maybe four, it would have been possibly different. He more than likely would have feared what people would say about him, what his father would think... But now, things were different. He was different.
"Let them see, let them all talk. I don't give a fuck." Draco growled, ignoring the admonishing look Hermione gave him at his choice of words. Leaning forward again, he pulled her closer to him, kissing her once more. This time, it was his teeth tugging on her bottom lip, it was her groans that he heard. Her name slipped from his mouth, muttered like a swear word, earning another soft groan from her.
The hand on the small of her back slid down towards her outer thigh, hitching it up to rest against his thigh, his fingers splayed out across the soft, smooth skin. "They... They could see us... Draco!" she protested again, in another breathless little gasp. "Darling... It's so... Cute... That you think I care." Draco whispered back, in between much softer, gentler kisses.
Breaking away to look down at her, Draco offered her a light smile. "They have something to say, they can say it to my face." he murmured, reaching out with his free hand to tuck a stray lock of hair behind Hermione's ear.
His other hand still rested against her outer thigh; giving it a soft squeeze, he released her, but not before leaning down and giving her one last, light kiss on the mouth. "Mm... Speaking of your face...?" Hermione said, a rueful sort of look starting to form in her eyes. Draco smirked, shrugging. "I hear you're good with spells, have at it." he drawled.
She made a face at him before taking out her wand, pointing it delicately at his still-injured face. "Episkey..." she murmured softly, followed a second later by "Tergeo" to get rid of any remaining blood. Draco reached up with one hand to lightly touch his left cheek; there were no longer any deep cuts in the skin, it was as smooth as it had been before his and Potter's brawl in the courtyard.
"Back to normal, eh?" he said with a smirk. She arched a brow at him, a sly look in her warm brown eyes. "Define normal." she retorted, trying not to grin. "Ouch! Vicious for a Gryffindor, aren't you, darling?" he said with a grin of his own. She blushed, suddenly avoiding his gaze and focusing instead on the wall behind him. "That's going to take a bit of getting used to, I suppose." she said softly.
This confused Draco a little. Had nobody ever called her that before, had nobody really ever given her any terms of endearment, in the six years that they had attended school together?? "Er... Would you prefer I go back to calling you Granger?" he asked, frowning slightly. "No!" she blurted out a little too quickly in response.
"Ahem. No. No, I... I wouldn't. I actually don't mind your pet name, it's just... Different." she added, a little more refined this time. Her eyes met his in that instant, and she offered him a tentative smile, one that made him weak in the knees and faint in the heart. "Merlin, you pretty girl, what the devil are you doing to me...?" Draco breathed, shaking his head.
With a soft answering smile of his own, he held out his hand towards the girl, feeling more than a little pleased with himself when she placed her hand in his. How perfectly they fit together, the two of them. "Almost like we were made for each other..." the errant thought ran through Draco's mind. For once, he didn't try to quell those kinds of thoughts, instead simply letting them in.
A small sigh of content left Draco's mouth, as he began walking down the hall, Hermione at his side. "Where are we going, by the way?" her voice was a soft lilt, music to his ears. He shrugged in response, a rather carefree step in his walk. "Anywhere and everywhere, darling." came his simple reply.
As the two of them strolled through the hallways, Draco was fully aware of at least more than one passersby staring at the pair of them, but he chose to ignore them all, his hand still clasped firmly around Hermione's. His earlier words came back to him as he walked. "Let them see..."
Yes, indeed, let them all see. Let them all see how much he, Draco Malfoy, had changed. Let them all see that he had managed to win over what was quite possibly the prettiest (and smartest) girl in school, let them all see how deeply his heart lay with her.
For once in his life, Draco felt like he could finally breathe, like he could finally live, maybe even love. Sure, it was a pity that it had taken him this long to figure it out, but better late than never, right? He figured as long as he had Hermione by his side, things could only get better from here on out... Maybe that was what he had needed, all along.
NEW TALE!!
Tumblr media
Obliviate - A Dramione Tale, Chapter One
The end of the war is nearing, and its not clear which side will win. The hunt for Muggle-borns is intensifying and Harry knows he needs to hide her. Save her. With no family, Hermione starts a new life in America, unaware that the man she meets at the library one day used to be a schoolmate. A wizard.
Narcissa Malfoy is desperate. The Dark Lord has ruined everything now with his sights firmly set on her son once more, she does the only thing she can think of that might keep his safe. She obliviates him, sending into the Muggle world where he stands a chance at a safer life, even if it's without her in it.
Hello friends!!!
Welcome to my new fic! A late-night brain child fueled by too much coffee and a desperate need to indulge in soft Dramione. In typical fashion, I have ignored the epilogue and given myself a squish more of an artistic license than is probably advisable for one's first dalliance with a new fandom, but whatevs.
A thank you to @donteattheappleshook for making this presentable!
I do hope you like it!!
♥️♥️♥️
Wednesday, February 9, 2001
The snow swirled in lazy patterns across the deserted street, the tires of the cab which had delivered him to the small bookshop at the centre of Muggle London twirled a flurry of flakes from the street as it pulled away from the curb.
She was here.
Just inside the small bookshop she worked at on Wednesdays.
He had been scouring the country for weeks, having followed one dead lead after the next, his window of opportunity quickly closing around him. He had started in San Diego, having placed thoughts of sunshine and living near the sea into her mind before he saved her- banished her!- he could hear Molly’s voice shirking at him from the small apartment everyone had huddled together inside of after the fall of Hogwarts.
582 days.
It felt like a lifetime.
Nineteen months to defeat Voldemort and his army of Death Eaters. Nineteen months to find her again and bring her back to who she was.
He knew the math was good, it was hers after all, and he knew the wand work to free her from the false life she had been confined to.
It had felt like the only choice.
Dramione Fic Rec No. 75
Crumple: Aftermath by MissiAmphetamine (Kaleidoscope): What happens in the aftermath? The need to see him itches beneath her skin. Hermione is no longer capable of judging whether that's normal or not. She loves him, so she thinks it's probably normal to hate the idea of him locked in a cell, with them separated from each other. On the other hand, she thinks it might not be normal to feel a constant clawing anxiety that hovers on the edge of full-blown blind panic, over that separation. That part of it might be trauma related, Hermione suspects. But what does she know? She's probably half mental at this point. She's not even sure she should love him, after – everything. She clasps her hands together, digging her nails into her own flesh.
Bad Kids by sodamnrad: She presses her hands on my chest and pushes. “We’re going too fast.” My hands fall away. The words are devastating. She’s got my fucking libido in her fist and she’s crushing it. It hurts. It’s annoying. “Didn’t you want to come here?” She shrugs. “I thought I did, but now…” Her eyes move nervously to the bed. “I’m a virgin.”
Dramione Fic Rec No. 73
A Season For Setting Fires by mightbewriting: Torture smells like spring. Like daffodils and tulips and snowdrops. Like the bouquets brought inside from the manor gardens to lend their life to cold stone walls that house criminals. Easter mixed with madness makes sense in this twisted landscape; Draco’s only chance at survival is to endure it. He knows this. But that doesn’t quell the twitching in his calves, the flexing in his fingers. Granger lifts her hand off the floor and Draco nearly loses his lunch, stomach churning as he watches her extend her arm, reaching through the translucent cord, reaching towards him. He tries to blink it away, blink blink blink, but both she and the cord are stubborn, persistent things. [In which a soulmate bond appears while Hermione is tortured at Malfoy Manor. Canon divergent from that moment onward.]
Dramione Fic Rec No. 71
A Darker Blue by skitter: “Aren’t you tired of pretending?” Now I’m just being reckless. My desire for interaction has outweighed my cautious nature and yet, when he stiffens and glares at me from over his shoulder, I can't find it within myself to care. “Aren’t you?” His words are sea salt in an old wound and I flinch. There is no cold satisfaction in his eyes though, and as the door slams shut behind him, I wonder at the things we've been and the things we will yet be. In the distance, the ocean breaks and I am washed away in the tide of my own making. -- The War rages and leaves a trail of broken things in its wake. Swept out with the raging sea, Hermione and Draco must learn to live with themselves and each other. Violence begets violence in an endless loop that they will either break from or beneath. Survival is the goal but not necessarily the destination and regardless of private desires, they'll have no choice but to weather the storm together.
Haven’t read much in the last year and haven’t recommended a fic in almost a year here, but can’t get over how little love (proportionately to its fabulousness) this story gets. It’s magnificent: gritty, angsty, and dangerously gripping. With the most stunning portrayals of Draco and Hermione.
Everyone, go read A Darker Blue by skitter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
📚 Study... Date? 📚
🐍DRACO MALFOY X HERMIONE GRANGER ONESHOT🐍
Sixth year has come around, and a few of the professors have encouraged the idea of study groups among the students. A great idea, really... Until Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger get paired together in Charms Class. Will the two of them be able to spend more than ten minutes in a room together, or will it all be for naught...?
• fluff; angst; language
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Miss Granger, you are to work with... Mr Malfoy."
Oh, she could have died, right then and there. Not him, anyone but him. He was such an insufferable, arrogant, underhanded little... Well, there were a number of choice words Hermione could have used to describe Draco Malfoy, but none of them were very becoming of someone like herself.
As if they were in agreement with her thoughts, Hermione suddenly heard someone let out a sharp exhale, and she snuck a glance across the room to see Malfoy staring- well, glaring, really- at her. His mouth was set in a poorly concealed scowl, and his oceanic eyes almost seemed to flash in anger- or perhaps irritation was the better word.
As she watched, one of his hands subtly clenched into a fist atop the table, his silver signet ring glinting in the light flooding in through the windowpanes of the classroom. His jaw tensed, and he shot her a dirty look before quickly averting his gaze. "Well, glad to see nothing has changed in the last five years." Hermione thought to herself, heaving a rather dismayed sigh.
She found herself growing just a tad bit irritated with Professor Flitwick that day. See, a few of the teachers at Hogwarts had decided that it would be a good idea for some of the students to form little study groups, in order to, as Professor McGonagall had so tactfully put it, "further any and all academic achievement".
And sure, it had seemed like it was in fact a good idea, even though Hermione knew she required no help with any of her schoolwork. It wasn't an entirely unpleasant concept... At least not until this moment. With another soft sigh, Hermione busied herself with organizing and then reorganizing the loose bits of parchment on her desk, anything to keep her thoughts from drifting back to him again.
Much to her relief, the time passed by fairly quickly, and class was dismissed. And then, much to her dismay, as the students began leaving, a shadow loomed over her desk, accompanied by the faint scents of cedarwood and sage, and green apples. She didn't even have to look up to know who it was.
Without a word from Malfoy, one lone pale hand slid a folded bit of parchment onto Hermione's desk, that silver ring coming into view for a brief moment. Just as silently as he had approached, Draco retreated, though the faintest traces of his cologne lingered for a bit afterwards.
Once he was out of sight, Hermione snatched up the bit of parchment, unfolding it and reading the words written there in Draco's elegant handwriting:
Tumblr media
"Well. Not one for poetics, is he?" Hermione muttered to herself, gathering up her things and stowing them away in her school bag, along with Malfoy's note. It struck her as a bit odd that he would want her to come alone, but that was probably to be expected. He most likely didn't want the entire school knowing that he had gotten paired up with her, that had to be it...
Tumblr media
"I cannot believe this, can you?? I mean, Granger, of all people?? Really??" Draco growled, beyond irritated as he paced back and forth in front of the Slytherin Common Room's fireplace. Blaise let out a snicker from where he was sitting in one of the armchairs. "Oh, poor you, mate." he laughed.
"But I don't see why you're whinging about it. It's not as if you'd have to do much work, she's incredibly smart, from what I hear." he added a second later, seeing the scowl starting to form on Draco's face. The blonde Slytherin stopped his pacing to glare at the boy, one corner of his mouth lifting in a sneer.
"You're joking, right? How is that even remotely helpful, Zabini? We're getting evaluated on this, you idiot! Besides, I highly doubt Granger is going to just sit there and let me do fuck all. Ugh, why her, I mean seriously?? Anyone else would've been fine!" Draco snapped. Blaise raised an eyebrow at this, a smirk already forming on his lips.
"Even Potter?" he pointed out. A noise similar to a hiss left Draco's mouth, as his gaze met Blaise's sharply. "Merlin, no! Okay, fine, I take it back. I suppose Granger is at least better than Potter or Weaselbee..." the blonde boy grumbled, running one hand through his hair in mild irritation.
He didn't like the idea of working in close quarters with Granger, but it was still better than having to possibly work alongside Potter, whom he loathed even more than the bookish little Gryffindor.
A sudden scuffle from the entryway to the Common Room caused both boys to quickly fall silent, their gazes turned towards whatever commotion had caught their attention. Draco stood there, his eyes fixed on the shadows behind the two biggest pillars up by the steps of the Common Room, his hand itching to reach for the wand tucked inside the front pocket of his blazer.
But out from within the shadows stumbled Crabbe, half keeled over and out of breath, like he had just finished some strenuous exercise. However, knowing the boy as well as he did, Draco found this to be an unlikely possibility. Still, anything was possible, he supposed.
Indeed, not a minute later, the one and only Hermione Granger stepped out from behind one of the pillars, a rather annoyed look on her face, her schoolbooks tucked behind one arm.
"M-malfoy... Sorry... I tried... To stop her... From coming in!" Crabbe panted, clutching onto a pillar and trying to catch his breath. Granger shot him another annoyed look, rolling her eyes as she descended the steps. "Like I told you, you idiot, he asked for me!" she snapped, waving a piece of parchment at him. Draco recognized the note he had slipped her earlier that day, in their Charms Class.
Mirroring Granger's eye roll, Draco made a dismissive motion towards Crabbe with one hand. "Out. Now." he said flatly. "You too, Zabini." he added, not even bothering to look over his shoulder at the other boy. "Nah, mate, I was here first. You two are just going to have to deal." Blaise answered, his tone suddenly cold, all traces of his earlier good humor now gone.
With a scoff, Draco shot an irritated look over his shoulder at the boy, before beckoning for Granger to follow him. "Whatever. You, come with me." he muttered, heading for the stairs leading up to his private dorm room. He didn't want her up here, he hardly ever let anyone up here, not since last year, when he and Parkinson had their little fling together.
But that was last year... Now things had changed. With a scowl, Draco held the door open for Granger, avoiding meeting her gaze. As she passed by him, Draco caught the faint scent of something warm and welcoming... Spiced apple and strawberries, with a few lingering notes of... Was that coconut? The overall effect was... Not entirely unpleasant, really.
Wait, wait, why was he letting himself act even the least bit interested?? Mentally scolding himself, Draco pushed the door shut behind himself, his jaw tensing as he turned around to see Granger making herself right at home- on his bedroom floor. Fucking Merlin, this girl, honestly!
As if sensing his thoughts, she looked up then, one brow raised expectantly. "Well?" she asked, that one word coming out more than a little haughtily. Draco bit back the urge to swear at her as he went and retrieved his spellbooks from his bag, before sitting down on the floor a few feet away from her. Best to get this over with sooner rather than later...
Tumblr media
"No, for the last time, look. You're doing it wrong. That one is supposed to be non-verbal. You're not supposed to let them know you have the upper hand, or it defeats the whole purpose of the damn spell." Draco sighed, stabbing one lone, pale finger down on the page of Granger's book.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw one of her hands clench into a loose fist, and when he lifted his gaze to meet hers, he wasn't the least bit surprised to see that familiar stubborn look on her face, her mouth set in a firm line. "I still don't see why this is necessary, we haven't even covered that yet." she grumbled, shoving a loose tendril of hair behind her ear with an irritated huff.
Draco couldn't help but be the tiniest bit amused. He didn't think he had ever seen Granger look this frustrated, this angry, at least not with her schoolwork. Oh sure, she had been angry with him on numerous occasions. If he thought really hard about it, he could still feel the faint bruising along the ridge of his nose, where she had assaulted him with a near perfect right hook in his third year.
She had been so mad, that day. How quickly she had reached for her wand, how bright had been that gleam of fury in her normally calm brown eyes... Her cheeks had been flushed a very noticeable shade of pink, as she had stood there holding him at wand-point, a scowl on her face.
One corner of Draco's mouth twitched up in a brief smirk as he recalled the way she had looked at him that day, at the way she herself had looked. And with a start, that smirk soon faded, as Draco realized the direction in which his thoughts were slowly taking him. No, no way... There was no way in hell that he could possibly feel that way about her... Could he?
She was bookish, far too intelligent for her own good, stubborn and opinionated... Everything Draco despised. Or was it everything Draco admired? Her traits weren't so entirely different from his own, after all. Could the reason he disliked her perhaps be that she reminded him far too much of himself, or at the very least, of what he could be, if he only tried?
"Malfoy. Hey! Draco."
At the sound of Granger's voice, Draco was abruptly and quite rudely brought back to the present. His cheeks flushing a faint pink, he pointedly avoided her gaze, choosing instead to look down at his spellbook, though he could still feel her watching him. The minutes dragged on, until he couldn't take it anymore.
He lifted his gaze sharply to meet hers, noting how quickly and very nondiscreetly she tried to appear busy, her eyes focusing instead on the floor, her book, anywhere but on him. Was it just him, or were her cheeks that same shade of pink as his? At that exact moment, as if by mistake, her eyes met his again, and he heard her breath hitch in her throat a little.
"Um... This spell..." she started, clearing her throat nervously, "You said it's non-verbal?" Draco couldn't bring himself to answer at first, too busy replaying the noise she had made, in his mind. It took him at least a full minute before he finally nodded, pointing down at Granger's spellbook again.
"Er, yes. It works better when it's kept silent. It's more... Effective.... Why are you looking at me like that?" Draco said slowly, his words trailing off in a sharp exhale. Granger was staring at him with an almost faraway look in her eyes, the faintest of smiles turning up one corner of her mouth as she gazed at him in... Was that awe?? Admiration??
With a start, she shook her head, regaining her composure at once. "Like what? Don't be ridiculous." she muttered. The smile on her face wavered a little, the beginnings of a scowl taking its place. Once again, Draco found himself more than a little amused, and also... Perplexed. What on earth was going on here?? What was with him tonight??
Why in Merlin's name was he letting her affect him so easily like this?? And what was more, why did he find himself actually enjoying it?? "Would it be so bad to like her? To maybe even love her?" his thoughts suddenly whispered in his head. Draco's eyes widened imperceptibly; to even try and entertain the mere thought, to go through with it...!
But indeed, would it be so bad? Maybe the root of it all was that he didn't actually hate her as much as he thought he did. Maybe, in fact, it was quite the opposite. Could he, by some unknown, godforsaken reason, maybe even a miracle, actually secretly love the bookish little Gryffindor??
Was that it, was that why he had always let himself be so affected by her, why he always had to spout off some snarky comment or another to her? Was it because deep down, in the darkest recesses of his heart, he loved her... He wanted to love her??
Swallowing hard, Draco forced himself to meet her gaze once more, noticing for the first time in a long time, just how pretty Granger's eyes were up close like this. The way the candlelight in the oil lamps on the wall made her irises flicker and sparkle like this, it was... Different. With another nervous swallow, Draco slowly gestured down at the page in Granger's spellbook.
"H-here. I want you t-to give it another go." he said softly, internally hating how he stumbled over his words. But she didn't seem to notice; instead she nodded, though her cheeks flushed pink again. "I'll probably foul this up, I'm not very good at Legilimency." she whispered. With a sharp pang, Draco found himself suddenly hating it, the way she sold herself short like that.
She did it a lot, he noticed. Ever so confident on the outside, but when it really mattered, she was quick to second guess herself sometimes. Before he could stop the words from leaving his mouth, Draco found himself offering up an off-handed, albeit reassuring, "I highly doubt that, there's not a damn spell you have yet to fuck up..."
There it was again, that blush coloring her cheeks the loveliest shade of pink. Taking a deep breath, she aimed her wand at him, and opened her mouth. Immediately, Draco shook his head, holding up one hand. "Granger, stop. What did I tell you earlier? I don't want to hear it." he said quietly, but firmly. Her cheeks reddening further, a slight pout forming on her lips, she nodded.
With that, she took another steadying breath, aiming her wand at him again and focusing intently. The space of a few minutes passed, before Draco felt that familiar prodding sensation at the forefront of his mind, like something was trying to get free. Or like someone was trying to get in. But that was it.
Frustrated, Granger let out a huff, her brows furrowing in irritation. Fighting the urge to smirk, Draco reached for his wand, his eyes never leaving hers. "Here. Let me." he whispered. In an instant, she was narrowing her eyes at him, a warning look in them. "You try and get inside my head, and I'll hex you." she threatened him.
But he could see by the look on her face that she perhaps didn't really mean the words, even as she said them. And this only roused Draco's curiosity. What was it exactly that the overconfident little Gryffindor was wanting to keep hidden from him?? "Maybe she fancies you too. You know, like you fancy her." his thoughts unhelpfully remarked.
A muscle in Draco's jaw twitched, as he stared across the space at Granger. Finally, he heaved a sigh, setting his wand aside. "Alright, fine. But I want you to try again." he said. Did he really, though? Did he honestly want her knowing his every thought, did he really want her seeing what he actually thought of her? With an almost terrifying revelation, Draco found that yes, he did, in fact, want her to know.
"Y-you have to mean it, though. Or it won't work." he added in a strained whisper, stumbling over his words again. She nodded, taking one last deep, calming breath, before making another attempt at the spell. This time, there was a much larger flickering of that familiar, uncomfortable intruding sensation, like Granger had succeeded, and was, in fact, seeing his every thought.
But it disappeared in a flash, as she grew too excited and lost control of the spell, that internal wall going back up to protect his thoughts once more. Immediately, she began to apologize, so very typical of Hermione Granger. "Oh, I'm sorry, I just-" she started, but Draco held up a hand to silence her.
"Don't. You did better that time around. Not bad, Granger. Not bad at all." he praised her, secretly growing more than a little smug at the way her cheeks flushed pink at his words. Biting her lip to contain her smirk, she took aim at him and tried the spell again... And again. And again.
Each time was better than the last, but as the hours ticked by, Draco took notice of the way Granger would try (unsuccessfully) to hide her yawns. And before he knew it, he had glanced over at the timepiece on his bedside table. Fucking Salazar, it was already well after midnight! He cast a fleeting glance over at Granger, only to freeze up.
She had... Oh, for the love of-! She had fallen asleep, her head tilted back and resting against the footboard of his bed, her lips parted slightly and her wand resting loose between her fingers. Draco sat there for more than a minute or two, silently watching her as she slept. She was more docile, more at peace, when she was like this, with her guard completely down.
It was- she was- rather... Beautiful.
But he couldn't just leave her there on the floor like that, it wouldn't feel right. As silently as he could, Draco gathered up his things and stowed them away inside his school bag, before doing the same with Granger's, setting them aside in a neat little pile on the floor at the foot of his bed.
With a nervous glance at her, Draco carefully extracted Granger's wand from between her fingers, setting it aside next to her things, before taking her into his arms. She stirred in her sleep a little, and Draco swore under his breath. He didn't want her to wake up, not yet. They had been at this for hours, she needed her sleep.
He carried her over to his bed, gently placing her down on it and reaching down to remove her shoes. Again, she stirred in her sleep, and Draco froze for a second. Once her breathing had slowed back to its normal pace, he worked on loosening the tie from around Granger's neck, setting it aside on the bedside table, leaving her in just her white button-down shirt, her skirt, and her socks.
He felt like it would somehow be an invasion of her privacy to attempt to undress her any further, so Draco carefully pulled back the covers, tucking her in and making sure she'd be comfortable. As silently as he could, he got himself undressed and ready for bed. Speaking of... Where did this leave him, now? He couldn't exactly sleep in the same bed, not now.
It wasn't that he had any remaining prejudice towards Granger.... Er, Hermione, he forcefully corrected himself. No, his innermost feelings tonight had disproven and dispelled any former irritation or hate towards the girl. And it was for that very reason, those very feelings, that Draco now made his decision.
Grabbing a few extra blankets from the closet, along with the only remaining pillow off the bed, Draco settled himself down on the floor for the night. Comfort be damned, for once. If he was really going to do this, he was going to do it right. He would be nothing short of a gentleman from here on out. At least, he would try...
Tumblr media
Hermione opened her eyes with a yawn, stretching her limbs out and staring with half-lidded eyes at the emerald green canopy above her. Wait- green?? Her dorm wasn't decorated in green, which meant this most definitely was not her bed she was sleeping in. Eyes flying open, Hermione sat up sharply, taking in her surroundings.
To her left, sitting neatly on the bedside table, was her necktie, the crimson and gold of her House colors clearly visible, even in the dim light filtering in through the waters of the Black Lake outside the bedroom window. Hermione cast a brief look down at herself, making a face at the slightly rumpled clothing.
This would be an awkward conversation starter, if she happened to run into anybody on her way back to the Gryffindor Common Room later. Letting out a yawn, Hermione continued to look around the room, but she froze when her gaze landed on a figure lying sprawled out on the floor.
Draco Malfoy was still asleep, his mouth hanging open a little. What few blankets he had were haphazardly strewn over his lower waist, exposing just a sliver of his pale, smooth skin beneath the simple shirt he wore. One of his arms was up by his head, the backs of his fingers just barely grazing the wooden floorboards. His other hand rested on his chest, that silver ring glinting in the dim lighting.
Even from here, Hermione could see the black ink of the Dark Mark on Draco's left arm, but it didn't faze her in the slightest. She supposed she had known all along that this is what he had been hiding from everyone, ever since she had secretly spied on him back in Knockturn Alley, before the start of the school year.
No, what really struck Hermione as rather odd was the fact that Draco Malfoy, the boy who clearly preferred the finer things in life and wasn't afraid to let everyone and anyone know this, was lying on the floor. This was rather odd, indeed. He very easily could have spent the night in his own bed, next to her. In fact, he very easily could have... But no.
Hermione shuddered, not wanting to go down that road. Besides, it didn't seem a likely possibility, anyway. Draco Malfoy may have been, among other things, a bully and overtly snarky and mean, but he was most definitely not capable of that dark act. He wouldn't dare, she didn't think he had it in him.
As Hermione sat there watching him, Draco suddenly groaned in his sleep, mumbling something unintelligible. One of his fingers twitched, and his brows furrowed in what looked like an expression of worry for a second, before he relaxed again, falling back into a deep sleep.
She had never seen him like this before: so vulnerable, peaceful, content. Every other time she had seen him, he had either looked strained and tense, or weary and depressed. Here, lying carelessly upon the floor, Draco Malfoy looked at ease, and above all else, human.
Anyone poking their head in to sneak a glance at him would never have known that life was secretly taking a toll on the boy, that he was slowly coming to the end of his rope. They would only have seen what Hermione saw now: a boy at peace with the world.
Very slowly, the corners of Hermione's mouth turned up in the faintest of smiles, her cheeks growing rather warm as she continued to watch Draco sleep, his prone form the very picture of serenity. And then it all abruptly came to an end, like someone poking at a soap bubble, shattering the iridescent illusion of magic and calm.
Draco groaned in his sleep again, but this time, both of his eyes slowly opened, and he let out a yawn, stretching out on the floor for a moment before rolling over onto his side. His eyes started to close once more, like he was going to drift back off to sleep, but then they suddenly widened. Almost as if remembering something, his gaze flew up without warning to meet Hermione's.
She started a little, her cheeks flushing warm as she stared back at him. He rubbed at his eyes with one hand, yawning again, before regarding her with a look of tired contemplation. "Morning." he mumbled, his voice still raspy from sleep. Hermione had to clear her throat before she could manage to get her reply out. "Er, morning."
Draco sat up then, running one hand lazily through his slightly messy white-blonde locks. Pulling one knee up to his chest, he rested his elbow against it, propping his face up against one fist. "How did you sleep?" he asked quietly, nodding towards the bed.
Hermione swallowed hard, casting a grateful look down at the emerald green satin sheets beneath her, and the warm, heavy duvet still covering her lower half. "Um. Rather well, actually. Though I'm finding myself a bit confused this morning." she answered, meeting Draco's eyes again.
He made a funny little noise at the back of his throat, but nevertheless waited for her to continue. "You could have taken the bed. But instead, you slept on the floor." she began. Draco nodded, raising one eyebrow at her blatant observation of the obvious. "You could have taken advantage of me." she continued.
Seeing the wary look starting to form on Draco's face, she steadily continued. "And yet, you didn't. Why?" she pressed. There was a long moment of silence between the two, and for a fleeting second, Hermione worried that he would never answer her question. But when he finally did, Draco's voice was soft, quiet... Calm.
"Because... Well, because despite what you and your little friends think, I'm actually not that inherently evil." he murmured. His brows suddenly furrowed in frustration, and she knew he had more to say. "And... Because you deserve so much better than that, Hermione." he finished, with a shake of his head and a pointed look at her.
There was almost an expression of remorse on his face now, a different kind of pain in his eyes than the one Hermione was used to seeing glimpses of in the corridors. Her throat suddenly felt dry, her eyes heavy and holding back tears, as she stared back at him. And then his words finally, truly registered with her.
"Y-you... You called me Hermione...?" she whispered. One of Draco's brows shot up, the boy momentarily caught off guard. "Well, yeah, that's your name, isn't it? Unless you'd prefer I keep calling you Granger?" he answered. Hermione slowly shook her head at him, the heavy feeling in her eyes growing ever stronger, until finally a lone tear rolled out, unbidden and unwanted.
Immediately, Draco sat up a little straighter, his expression pained again. Hermione hastily reached up to swipe at her eyes, her gaze dropping to rest once more on the bedsheets. She heard him get up off the floor, before she felt the mattress suddenly dip as he sat down on the bed in front of her. "Hey. Look at me." he said softly.
She didn't. She couldn't. And then she felt his fingers, a featherlight touch beneath her chin, tilting her face up so she had to look at him. "Talk to me, darling. Tell me what's wrong." he whispered. That word, "darling", spoken so softly and gently, directed at her... Oh, it nearly broke her. "Don't understand." the words left her in a strained whisper, her voice cracking on the last syllable.
Draco was silent for a moment, as he sat there staring at the girl in front of him. He himself didn't quite understand; surely she didn't think he was merely having a go at her, all at the expense of her emotions, her heart? The very idea made his own heart ache terribly within his chest, made any and all words dry up in the back of his throat.
It was a long while before he could finally speak, and when he did, it was like everything he had kept bottled up for so long just spilled out, no floodgates to stop the words from leaving his mouth.
"I meant it, every word of it. You deserve so much better than just being someone's quick shag, their easy failsafe to passing their classes, you deserve better than being the butt of someone's jokes, you deserve so much better than all of it. You... You deserve better than me, than what I've given you, how I've treated you.
"You deserve someone who will sit there and thank every fucking star in the sky that they even get to breathe the same air as you, that they even get to so much as look at you. Someone who will most likely spend every waking minute of their life wondering how and why the hell they earned even a speck of your attention, someone who, quite honestly, would be extremely lucky to get even so much as a glimpse of you.
"And... It kills me that I'm not that person. That I can never be that person, because of what I've done, the hell I've put you through all these years. I'll never be able to know how it feels to make you laugh, to see you smile, to hold you when you cry, to... To... T-to kiss you. Hold your hand in the hallways. Talk shit about anyone who's dared to make you upset. All of it.
"You don't know how badly I want to be that person, and yet... I can't be. I'm not. Because you deserve better." he finished. There it was, the whole truth, every damn thing he had ever shoved down and kept bottled up inside of him, kept under heavy lock and key. Every fucking word of it.
He wasn't sure if she would ever fully understand, or even forgive him for what he had done, and to his complete surprise, he found that that was alright. Her forgiving him would be more than even he deserved. As he sat there watching her, a lone tear rolled down her cheek, followed by another. And another. And another, more, still more, until she was full-on crying in front of him.
He had never seen her cry like this, not in front of him, never in front of him. He had seen her get angry, he had seen her act disinterested, he had even seen her laughing with Potter and Weaselbee on more than one occasion... But he had never seen her cry until now.
A part of him, the part he had worked so hard to keep on display for everyone else, wanted to scoff, wanted to roll its eyes and dismiss her from his room. But the other part of himself, perhaps the better part of him, won out instead. Almost as if on instinct, he reached forward, pulling her into his arms, into his lap.
And she let him.
So this is what it felt like, to hold her while she cried. Draco found that he didn't actually like this as much as he thought he would, not because of the fact that she was who she was, no.
He found that it was because for every sob that wrenched itself past those pretty rosebud lips, for every teardrop that rolled down the apples of her cheeks, a new fissure ripped itself open deep within Draco's heart, tearing and clawing it asunder, until it felt like he couldn't breathe for trying.
Her pain made his own suffering multiply tenfold. He couldn't bear to see her like this, so vulnerable and hurt and fragile. It wasn't like her, it wasn't like the tough, confident little Gryffindor he had grown up and exchanged heated words with over the years. This was a whole new Hermione, and oh, how it hurt him to witness this.
He held her close to him, letting her fall apart in his arms, trying his best not to break down and fall apart with her. And eventually, when her sobs had finally quieted, when it seemed like there were no more tears to be shed, Hermione slowly lifted her head and stared up into his eyes, her own brown ones rimmed with red and filled with an unspeakable, unfathomable amount of pain.
"Y-you're s-such an idiot." she whispered, the words coming out as a broken, stuttering, gasping little sigh. Draco knew that. He knew. But nevertheless, he waited patiently for her to continue. "All these y-years, and y-you... You n-never told me. N-not once." she gasped, taking a deep, shuddering breath. Draco patted her gently on the back, swallowing hard past the heavy feeling in his throat.
"I know. I was stupid. Like you said, an idiot." he said lamely. And then a sudden idea occurred to him, memories of the previous night returning to the forefront of his mind. "But now you know. If you don't believe me, see it for yourself. You know what to do." he added quietly, giving her a pointed look.
She stared up at him with tearstained cheeks, a newfound realization forming in those warm brown eyes. And as Draco sat there staring back down at her, he saw the resolve strengthen itself from within her. He knew it, he felt it, he saw it by the next look she gave him.
Her gaze was steady, unwavering, as she did it, finally did it, broke through all the defenses, all the walls and cages and warning signs deep within Draco's mind. He knew by the sudden glazed look in her eyes, by the fresh wave of tears welling up at the corners, that she was seeing everything.
Everything he had worked so carefully to hide from her and everyone else, every fleeting glimpse of herself, everything he had ever felt and thought and hated and loved about her... She saw all of it.
And when it was finally over, when she finally blinked the tears out of her eyes and looked up at him with that broken little expression on her face, he knew. They were, without a shred of doubt, on the same page for once, she finally understood what he meant, how he felt.
"Now you know." Draco repeated, his own eyes feeling a bit watery and heavy. To his surprise, and quite possibly his relief, Hermione slowly nodded. Another shuddering breath left her trembling in his arms, and he wordlessly pulled her ever closer to him. And just like before, she let him.
Her head went down to rest against the crook of his neck and shoulder, her breathing quick and shallow. They sat there like that, in complete silence for several minutes, until she finally spoke. "Why?" she asked. That one word hung there in the air between the two of them, heavy and dangerous and fragile, as fragile as Hermione had been, still was.
But Draco somehow understood. He knew what she was asking him, without even having to utter a single word. And when he answered her, his voice was steadier than it had ever been. "I didn't want you getting involved. I didn't want you to see the ugliness and the darkness for what it was, to see me for what I was. It would never have been fair to you." he said quietly.
She made a noise quite like that of a mix between a scoff and a laugh, but it didn't sound right coming out of her mouth. And then she lifted her head to look him in the eyes, her mouth turned up in the saddest, the tiniest, of smiles. "You not telling me, wasn't fair to me." she pointed out.
"I could have grown to love you, if you had told me sooner. It wouldn't have mattered, if I knew you meant it." she added, swallowing thickly. Draco felt both relief and that former pain echo within himself; she could have, she would have... All past tense. None of it mattered now, not really. He had fucked up, he was sure he had...
And then she continued in a small, quiet, barely audible whisper, "I still could. If you would let me in. If I was good enough."
His heart nearly shattered into pieces at her words. "If I was good enough", like she was unworthy of him. As if she could ever be-! He shook his head at her, his brows furrowing as he gazed down at her.
"No, Hermione, darling, no. I... Please, don't. If anything, I'm the one who isn't good enough for you. I really never have been. You, you're... Anyone else would be lucky to have you. Even Weaselbee, I've seen the way he looks at you." he said firmly.
At this, Hermione suddenly got that familiar, stubborn look in her eyes, and she was shaking her head at him. "But... What if things have changed? What if I don't want anyone else?" she asked softly. Draco's eyes widened; she couldn't possibly-! "What are you saying?" he whispered.
"What if I want you?"
The way she said it, practically breathing the words, Draco's heart nearly stopped dead in his chest. "I mean, call me daft, call me absolutely mad, but-" she started. Draco didn't even let her finish. He leaned down, his mouth on hers in an instant. "You're absolutely mad." he gasped, before kissing her like his life depended on it, like he was never going to get this chance again, never going to see her again.
He knew there was a chance she'd pull away, she'd look at him like he used to look at all the little first years so many moons ago, with disgust and contempt written all over her face, but no, gods no-
She kissed him back with a fervor to match his own, her mouth moving perfectly against his, all tongue and teeth and unspoken promises, apologies, and above all, love. That much was clear, as she kissed him, one of her hands clutching at the front of his shirt, her fingers closing tightly around the soft fabric.
Her other hand found his, her fingers winding through his own, holding firm like she was afraid to let go, afraid of falling. But she wanted to fall, he could tell by the way she kissed him, by the soft murmur of his name on her lips, by the way she couldn't quite seem to stop, didn't want to stop.
He didn't want to stop, either. But he had to. He had to treat her with care, he had to let her catch her breath, he had to see her. Breaking the kiss, he stared down at her in sheer amazement, his own breathing ragged and quick, each breath being dragged up and out from his lungs, past his racing heart, out through his parted lips.
Hermione's cheeks were flushed pink, her perfect little rosebud mouth a shade darker, slightly swollen from his kiss, his touch. Her eyes were bright as she stared up at him, the most tender expression hidden within those brown irises. "You-" she started, but he cut her off with a nod.
"I know." he breathed, his arms still around her, holding her close to him, like she might disappear at any moment. Slowly, almost shyly, she dropped her gaze to look down at her hand in his, before looking back up at him through her lashes. "Where do we go from here?" she whispered. Where, indeed...
Draco thought for only a split second, before giving Hermione a rather earnest look. "Forward, I hope. It... It won't be easy." he said slowly. "Nothing ever is." she quickly pointed out, trying not to smile. Draco couldn't quite stop the smirk from tugging at one corner, both corners, of his mouth.
"Suppose we'll just have to practice, then? Until we get it just right?" he asked in a whisper. She nodded, giving his hand a light squeeze. "This seems to be a fairly good start." she murmured, smiling up at him then. He really couldn't help it; he grinned as he hugged her close to him again, before letting her go. "You should, uh... Well, that is, we should-" he began, a bit awkwardly.
Thankfully, she got the hint. Blushing again, she nodded, letting go of him and hastily climbing out of bed to redress herself. But as she was about to leave his room, Draco couldn't help himself. "Hey. Hermione. You forgot something." he said, stopping her in her tracks. She turned around, and in one quick stride, Draco was in front of her, leaning down and kissing her softly, gently, on the mouth.
When he finally released her, a warm feeling settled over him, and he reached up to tuck a loose tendril of hair behind her ear. "See you at breakfast, darling. Save me a seat. My table." he told her with a light wink. He felt a bit smug seeing the blush reddening her cheeks, as she bit back a grin and tugged open the door to his bedroom.
Once she was gone, Draco let out a breathless laugh, running one hand through his hair. He had done it, he had really done it. He hadn't thought it would be possible; the idea, the very notion, of earning not only Hermione's forgiveness, but her heart as well... It had seemed like a faraway concept, a pipe dream.
But he did it. And as he got dressed for the day, he couldn't help but suddenly notice the wand lying on the floor by the foot of his bed. That wasn't his, that was... That was hers-! Draco felt his face grow warm, as he retrieved the wand from the floor, tucking it inside the pocket of his blazer, next to his own wand. Maybe she had done it on purpose, Draco thought, on his way down the stairs.
Either way, it meant being able to see her again, being able to touch her again. And this time, things would be better. He wouldn't have to wait for a study date to get close to her, to let her know how he felt. Because now she knew... She knew, and she still wanted him, still loved him. That's all he had ever really wanted, all he needed.

After Gerhard Freidl and Clark Bockelman, it’s time for one of the most popular Draco fancasts: Jeremy Dufour. He’s bloody gorgeous, one of the most beautiful men I’ve seen in my life (I look at his face and see nothing that could be improved), so definitely no canon Draco material, but who cares? A girl can dream, right? Let her have her fantasies.

Do you ever get into plotting your non-existent fic or novel so much you can’t fall asleep? Thinking about my (probably) never-to-be-written stories before sleep is my daily routine, and more often than not, I get so invested into replaying my favourite scenes in my head and adding new details (angsty details, I must add) to my ideas that I just lie awake for hours even though I have to get up early in the morning.

Commonalities of the Coldest Kind by ChaosAndCrumpets: When Draco Malfoy is infected with a terrible Muggle plague*, the only person brave enough to risk death to care for him is his colleague Hermione Granger.*DISCLAIMER: Draco has a cold. M, 5 Chapters, 12,087 Words
Compassion for the Condemned by Ghastly_lemons: The Ministry holding cells were, Draco supposed, like the Cloudhopper training broom he’d had as a child to the Nimbus 2001 of the Azkaban cells. They were clammy and cold, but not glacial. Dingy, but not filthy. Stifling, but not suffocating. Meagre, but not barren. Callous, but not cruel. Depressing, but not nightmarish. - Draco Malfoy has resigned himself to his inevitable fate in the wake of the war; a cell in Azkaban, likely for the remainder of his life. He sees no point in fighting it, but an unlikely someone has decided for fight for him. M, WIP
Contradictions by ambpersand: When Hermione Granger is presented with a problem, she turns to research. Information, hypotheses, and experiments... These are all things she knows and loves, so it should come as no surprise that when she finds herself with a problem in the bedroom, she knows exactly how to find a solution. And it just so happens that the solution is in the arms of a strong and confident stranger, with hands and lips that know just how to drive her body wild. The only problem? They belong to Draco Malfoy, the one person she should never trust. E, WIP
Damn Your Love, Damn Your Lies by AdAsttra: Draco's a Veela, Hermione is his mate. The only problem is that he hates her. E, WIP
Different People by nevertoosweets: Draco had gotten it wrong. He’d thought that they had been working towards something new. He’d hoped, for a brief moment, that there’d be something worth coming back to England for, but they weren’t different people, after all, no matter how changed he felt.Some things aren’t able to be glossed over or set aside. Scars, for example. Hadn’t scars been the thing that started it all? And now it’s ended with two different scars on opposite arms of two very different people and he didn’t know why he'd thought that’d be something either of them could ever ignore.Both scars had only ever caused her pain. Obliviate - A Dramione Tale
The end of the war is nearing, and its not clear which side will win. The hunt for Muggle-borns is intensifying and Harry knows he needs to hide her. Save her. With no family, Hermione starts a new life in America, unaware that the man she meets at the library one day used to be a schoolmate. A wizard.
Narcissa Malfoy is desperate. The Dark Lord has ruined everything now with his sights firmly set on her son once more, she does the only thing she can think of that might keep his safe. She obliviates him, sending into the Muggle world where he stands a chance at a safer life, even if it’s without her in it.
♥️♥️♥️
Draco Malfoy is dead.
Hermione had sat quietly, hands holding the Daily Prophet as her eyes stared at the grimacing face of the boy who had tormented her as soon as she had stepped foot into the magic of her new world, Skeeter’s theatrically recounting of Narcissa’s soft weeping as the body of her son was sealed into the family’s mausoleum, Voldemort front and centre hailing Draco a hero while a broken Lucius Malfoy stood a half-step behind his wife.
Heir to the Malfoy line, a Pure-Blood Prince, a great loss.
The words blurred together as she read them, his haunted, half smiling eyes staring back at her, jaw sharper than she remembered, shoulders wider than they had been the last time she had seen him, their eyes meeting for a split moment before she apparated to Southern Ireland.
“Good riddance,” Ron muttered, a drip of raspberry jam- don't eat it all Ronald!- spattering across the photo.
Hermione said nothing, eyes flickering from the headline to the story to the picture and back again.
“Mione?”
“Hmm?”
“You coming?” Molly Weasley held out a sweater, freshly washed.
She nodded, setting the paper down on the table, a flick of her wand to banish the red smear of fruit preserve from Draco’s gaunt face- I’m sorry- her whisper lost against the clatter of chair legs as what was left of the Order moved around the crowded cottage in the outer Hebrides they had found deserted days before.
“It’s his birthday today,” she said, voice like gravel against the shore, the gulls above their heads sketching and cawing over the roll and crash of the waves.
“Who?” Harry asked, backpack slung over one shoulder.
“Draco.”

Chapter Three - Samhain {coming soon}

“I have had an idea,” his suite door flew open, revealing a wind-mussed Granger, her hair curling around her head as she unwound the red and yellow scarf, coiled around her like a sleeping cat.
He had given her a keycard- mind you don’t lose it, please- the week prior, after having been alerted by the front desk staff that a friend was waiting for him in the lobby and while they did wish to provide him with the privacy he deserved as their Most Distinguished Guest, would he perhaps be amenable to meeting his friends outside the hotel and escorting them himself? He had laughed, finding Hermione red-faced and brimming with self righteous indignation, her harsh whispers- I’m not God damn Julia Roberts- accompanying her stomping, angry footsteps as he ushered her into the lift. He had promised to clear it up with the front desk immediately, and had placated her by pressing a spare card into her hand.
Since then, she’d become unpredictable- get yourself a cell phone and I’ll call you ahead of time, how ‘bout that?- in her visiting hours and he was both delighted and confused to find more and more of her belongings making his set of rooms their permanent home.
Draco looked up from his tea, the sitting room, in perfect order from housekeeping hours before, once again looked like a discount clothing store, Hermione’s belongings being flung around the space like confetti. He swallowed a grimace and raised an eyebrow instead. She plowed on, her coat joining the heap of outerwear on the cream coloured armchair before flopping down beside him and stealing a biscuit from his tray- I swear to God, woman, you were raised by wolves, do use a saucer this time, I shall beg if I need to- her pale pink scrubs smelling faintly of antiseptic and what Draco had privately referred to as Eau D’Old Person.
“Since I am the only one out of the two of us who is clever enough to have a drivers,” she stopped to pick up her tea mug, sans saucer, and take a careful sip of the Earl Gray he had ordered- pleb- ignoring his barb, “I think we should rent a car and go to Salem for the day tomorrow.”
“What’s Salem?”
“A town,” she said through a mouthful of chocolate-covered digestive. “I saw it on a pamphlet at the front desk. It’s only an hour away.”
He raised an eyebrow again.
“They had witch trials there, it’s quite famous.”
“Witches?”
“Yup.”
“Real ones?”
“Obviously not,” she rolled her eyes, snatching another biscuit before he could bat her fingers away- use your saucer- and popping the whole thing in her mouth, “witches aren’t real.”
