It’s really nice how every time Beverly shows up and is like “Something weird is happening” everyone just defaultly believes her. There have been multiple episodes where she tells them something is up with barely any, sometimes no, proof, and every time they just go with it, and every time she’s right! Very refreshing take.

When all hope begins to shatter//Know that I won't be afraid – Ro Laren/Laris, Beverly Crusher/Deanna Troi
A/N: Last fic for tonight’s section of @amonthofwhump ‘s March Challenge. Team Dynamics.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“It was… definitely daring.” Deanna would murmur later, when Beverly tells her just how Laris snuck past the sensors, using all the tech she had to hand, her Romulan abilities far beyond what anyone knew.  She had worried, hoped, prayed, that somehow, someway, the pain she feels isn’t real. Beverly’s grip tightens as she continues. Ro Laren is dead. Starfleet thinks as much anyway, that’s why Deanna is hiding them all, it’s why Jack has stayed with his father, she’s dead. She has to stay that way, to keep her safe. Anyone could be a changeling, anyone could be dangerous. “Is she alright?” Beverly merely sighs and Deanna’s eyes soften. Laris, the whole time, has been tending to Ro, the woman she stole, the woman who is meant to be dead. There’s a darkness to her eyes that makes Laris’ heart ache even as she smooths soft fingers through tangled hair, even as she murmurs soft reassurances, a mix of Romulan prayer and Bajoran words, picked up through work with intelligence since leaving Jean-Luc’s side. Ro refuses to move, to believe she’s safe, believe she’s alive. Then her eyes open and rough, weak, husky words come. “Why me?” “You matter.” Two short words, but Laris knows now is not the time to explore her feelings, to explore the strand of fate that had tugged her to Ro, that had made her steal the woman and run as the shuttle explodes. For now it’s enough truth. For now, they have time. “We shouldn’t…” Laris hushes her then, a rough laugh. “I don’t care. Bajor should have been helped, Romulus should have been helped. Let old wounds heal.” “I tried to…” “I know. You tried. The maquis… tried.” Laris sighs, smooths hair from Ro’s eyes again and barely hides her tremble when Ro’s own hand cups her cheek, a thumb brushing just close enough to her lips to be tempting. Then soft fingers find sensitive ear and she shudders, her breath hitching even as Ro curses under her breath. “Destiny is such a… bitch.” Laris laughs then, smiling slightly. “Perhaps… but we found each other in the end.”

can i hear the whole rant about remember me because HARD agree. especially because it’s literally 2 episodes after family…. like. come on.
god ok ok so. like i said in the tags i do think remember me is a good episode in a lot of ways, and is probably my favorite beverly one (bc she’s one of the ones who usually gets shitty focus episodes, but that’s not the point). that said, it absolutely does not do what it should logically do. losing wesley is the fear that kicks off this whole specific alternate reality, and yet somehow this episode is not about their relationship. and if you look at the show…nothing ever really is?
(this got long hold on lmao)
like what kicked this train of thought off off is the point in this first duty recap about the fact that they almost never let dr crusher be the central parental figure to her own son, and I’m inclined to feel like they were right about that. like yeah clearly some of it happened before the show or happens offscreen or whatever, but I feel like they almost never really have like….meaningful conversations in the course of the show. I don’t really feel like there’s anything Wrong with the interactions they do have but they’re almost always short, often surface level, and somehow every episode that should be about the two of them ends up being about picard’s dynamic with one of them.
with remember me specifically, it ends up being about picard to the point where most of her conversations are with him. her big fear at the end is picard disappearing. she already encountered wesley and now he’s gone. rip i guess. forget about the aforementioned fact that the fear of losing her only child and the last living piece of the husband she already lost was the reason this specific reality was created when the warp bubble hit. forget about the fact that, from a narrative perspective, this episode is set up to be About That. and then when she gets back she spends like 30 seconds hugging picard first (and then talking to the traveler lmao) before finally checking on her son that’s collapsed on a table. it feels like they went out of their way to not address the fact that wesley is in theory the most important person in her life.
idk man this episode drives me insane because it could have been a STELLAR opportunity to explore this mother and son relationship and delve into the complexities of it that we never really get to see, and then they just don’t do it because picard is more important (and because, with the exception of the trois, they don’t seem to think mother/child relationships can be as interesting and complex as father/child ones. and also because they never knew what to do with wesley). we could have had wesley as the last other person remaining! we could’ve had them working together on this, which is something we never really get because their knowledge is in different fields! we could have explored the degree to which theyre willing to trust each other! we could see how she feels about the ways in which wesley has matured over time and the ways in which he hasn’t, because he’s a genius who has dealt with a lot of things, but he’s also still a teenager with a lot of vulnerability who needs support from his mother! we could have ultimately seen her reaction to her darkest fear coming true! this could have been so good!!!! the version that I am imagining in my head rn is personal top 5 episodes material. god.
in general, wesley’s consistently defined by the parent he doesn’t have, and understandably so. it’s central to his narrative, and it makes for a compelling story. it just feels like he’s so rarely defined by the parent he does have, at least in any truly meaningful way, and if they’d taken this episode in the direction it should have gone, it could’ve done so much to fill in that gap.

@dannsa-dotair inquires:  [ DISCUSS ]
’ THINGS DONE WHILE DANCING. ‘ always accepting.
Tumblr media
He’s never liked Starfleet functions. He can put up with them for a short while-- a polite smile, a friendly nod here and there, attempting to drone out the idle chatter of the day-- but when it was a days-long event such as this, he often wishes for anything to take him back to the quietude and relative safety of the Enterprise and let him escape his torment.
At least he’s not alone this time. Beverly is here, suffering in this heretofore undiscovered circle of hell with him, and while he always is appreciative of her companionship, he feels all the more thankful for her presence when she grasps him gently by the hand, pulling him upright and toward the dance floor, away from the admirals and their petty gossip. His heart lightens with every step they take.
Dancing doctor she may be, he finds himself falling comfortably into the rhythm of the steps and the music, one of his hands clasped in hers and the other hand resting on her hip.
Tumblr media
“I’m very grateful for your rescue,” Jean-Luc begins, “though, do I take it you’re just as bored by this as I am?” he inquires, eyebrow raised and a teasing smile playing across his features.

Look I don't know why there is still Dr. Crusher hate in the TNG fandom.
Yes, she's a bit of an awkward nerd. But that's who she is. And you are too, so shut up.
"PULASKI WAS BETTER!"
That was a single season thing that was never going to be more than that. And she was just Lady McCoy. Which was great, for that season. But it was a 60s relic thing that was never sustainable. Kirk and Bones played off each-other. Picard isn't Kirk. He can't handle a Bones. He needs a Crusher. They have a good dynamic.
And as to people saying Gates McFadden is just a choreographer who got nepo'd into this:
Season 4, Episode 17 of TNG, "Night Terrors".
Crusher is explaining to Picard how everyone on the ship (besides Data and Troi) is going insane because something is preventing them from getting REM sleep. But she ALSO is suffering from it, and starts breaking down from it while she's explaining it.
Tumblr media
This is a triple-A performance. This is fantastic. And just one example of many from her in this show.
I admit that the writers rarely gave her quality material to work with.
...Like that time in the Robin Hood Q episode, where they made her and Marina Sirtis bash pots on heads during the sword fight, when in reality they were the ONLY members of the cast who had previous experience with staged sword fights...!
...A complaint for a later post. It wasn't Gates McFadden's fault they rarely gave Crusher good material. She's a good actress, and is good on this show.
These people are family, because I am mentally healthy. Stop talking shit about my Aunt Beverly.

please forgive my terrible pictures but I’m watching The High Ground and the dynamic between Picard and Dr Crusher is glorious.

When she calls him a good role model for Wesley.

Picard: “I should’ve beamed you up.”
Beverly: “You wouldn’t dare.”
Picard: “Oh yes I would, and should!”
Beverly: “Without my permission?”
Picard: “If you don’t follow orders!”
Beverly: “If you’d give reasonable orders, I’d obey!”
Picard: “Doctor, I will be the judge of what is reasonable!”
Then ten seconds of tense silence, and they change the subject.
They’re so repressed, and so in love, these two fools. And I relate to Dr Crusher so hard.

Okay, so like. I've recently gotten into Star Trek TNG and am on season 3. Return of Beverly Crusher and all that. Then I realize a few episodes in that we haven't seen Katherine Pulaski, the doctor in season 2, at all.
And so I looked it up and the show like. Doesn't even really address it? Crusher leaves (due to contract dispute irl apparently) and now comes back and Pulaski is just completely forgotten because Crusher is back.
The most baffling thing to me tho is how divisive she apparently was to the 80's fandom? And like, for what?? Simply because she wasn't Crusher?? Like, a lot of those historical criticisms seem to be that she didn't "fit in" with the crew but what?? How did she not???
She was fucking awesome. She had a completely different dynamic than Crusher that worked to make a quickly more complicated character.
Crusher has a sort of sex appeal. Humanistic compassion. Intelligence and empathy.
Pulaski felt pragmatic but highly moral. Daring and authoritative. She matched Picard's ego and intelligence, often creating conflicts due to their different approaches to moral problems. She was flawed and headstrong but genuinely trying to do the right thing, which is how most compelling characters in TNG feel.
It's just so crazy to me that she wasn't popular and the show didn't even write her character an "out."

only the option with the LEAST votes will be eliminated. propaganda under the cut (and more always welcome!):
jean-luc picard and beverly crusher:
They have a number of romantic moments throughout the TNG series from arguably the first but DEFINITELY the second episode. but they only get together (briefly before divorcing) in an alternate timeline episode which is also the season finale. Also they have a kid together in Picard but are still not allowed to be together She was married to his best friend and he was in love with her but wouldn’t say anything because he wouldn’t want to damage his bestie’s marriage and then his friend died and they met again years later and shared a lot of romantic and sexual tension for years. He openly admitted (under mind reading) that he had loved her since his bestie was alive but felt he couldn’t act on it. In an alternate future they got married. In the canon future they got together and broke up repeatedly because trauma makes relationships hard sometimes and they have a kid together who is named after the aforementioned bestie. An episode forcing them to share thoughts makes him openly admit that he loves her and has loved her for years even when she was married to his best friend.
kit herondale and livvy blackthorn:
They were literally straight bait. So Kit, Livvy and Livvy’s twin brother Ty were a trio with their own side plots in TDA. And well. We literally meet Kit when Ty breaks into his house and puts a knife to his throat and Kit gets distracted by Ty’s eyes. Then later Kit and Livvy have a few moments and kiss once. Then Livvy dies. There are some necromancy shenanigans. Kit confesses his love to Ty then immediately flees the country. Like Kit/Ty was clearly endgame from the start but Livvy and Kit just made out once.
galo and aina (submitted as lio and galo):
Iirc, the whole time the audience was set up to believe that Galo will get together with a teammate named Aina (i might be completely wrong but i think she showed romantic interest in him). That's what usually happens, anyways. However, studio trigger turned that premise on its head with Galo's budding relationship with Lio. In order to save Lio, Galo kissed him. They kissed.
jeff winger and britta perry:
the show starts off with jeff creating the study group so that he can get with britta, they serve essentially as narrative foils, with jeff not caring about people and britta caring too much about people, they nearly get married on THREE (3) separate occasions, they're secret friends with benefits for an entire season but break up when the group finds out, they're the only two people from the core group left in greendale when the show ends; but in the end they make jeff's "true love interest" the girl who was half his age when the show started (36/18)...
angel and cordelia chase:
They met as characters on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but their dynamic doesn't take off until the Angel spinoff Because the showrunners of Angel didn't go in with the idea of putting these two together, the characters' friendship was allowed to develop organically without the assumption of romance, which then made the realization of their feelings for each other more satisfying. Unfortunately the shadow of Bangel (Buffy x Angel) still held over Angel's character, so I think it was a hard sell at the time and didn't gain a lot of popularity in the years since. Both these two characters grew alongside each other, supported each other, and despite knowing that they loved each other, let each other go to pursue their destinies. A really underrated het pairing!
matthew and mary crawley:
They spend multiple seasons full of tension to get their happy ever after. There are so many tropes used between these two. They finally get their shit together and get married, and then have a beautiful child together. Matthew is so happy about his child being born that he doesn't pay attention to the road and fucking DIES IN A CAR CRASH. And that's how their story ends. It makes me so livid every time I think about it lol they really killed him off like that right after and I mean RIGHT AFTER his child is born. It's so foul and every man that they set Mary up with after that doesn't feel nearly the same
keiichi maebara and rena ryugu:
Fluffy harem romcom twists into yandere horror, but then twists again into a story of friendship triumphing over everything. Really holds for any pairing with Keiichi, but the rooftop battle in part 6 is just too good. A recent manga spinoff has them married to total randos, so their respective sons can have the same kind of relationship.
raleigh beckett and mako mori:
Literally everything about the writing of Pacific Rim make it seem like they're setting up for a romance between these two and then they just. Don't. Despite this, "drift compatable" was one of the most popular AUs for couples after the film came out for a hot minute because of how romantic they made the concept seem. *gestures to the entire movie* seriously (note: "drift compatible" essentially describes an in-universe quality of the relationship between raleigh and mako, meaning this quality was so romantic that it would be implemented for other ships in au fanfics)
kagome higurashi and inuyasha from inuyasha:
Long time until they get together, with teasing moments
bow and glimmer:
They didn’t get together until the VERY END of the whole show and even then it was a little ambiguous (was it a BFF “I love you?” 🤷🏼‍♀️)
good luck everybody! now go vote!

Character Spotlight: Wesley Crusher
By Ames
Tumblr media
Grab your favorite hideous sweater! It’s time to talk about Wesley Crusher. He’s one of the most polarizing characters on TNG, with a lot of hate directed his way, but he also has a number of great Trek moments which we on A Star to Steer Her By are going to sort through today!
We can probably blame Gene Roddenberry for making this character so insufferable, especially in the first season when he seemed to have the easy solution for the engineering problem of any given episode. Gene designed him to characterize a person’s infinite potential and then slapdashedly shoehorned him into every place he could, and you’ll notice that right after the big writers room turnover, the child prodigy started feeling more like a character and less like a cheat code. Scroll on for the list below and listen to our chatter on this week’s podcast episode (warp over to timestamp 57:36) for all the dirt. Just unplug your nanite experiment first.

Best moments
Tumblr media
Don’t shut up, Wesley While I’ll give Wesley the deserved scrutiny in a moment for the absurd number of times in season one of TNG that he saved the day, we do have to give him some credit for figuring out that Lore was impersonating Data in “Datalore.” Even while pretty much everyone on the crew was telling him to shut up, Wes had it all figured out and topped it off by beaming Lore into space.
Tumblr media
Double dumbass on you! Wesley actually does get to shine during “Coming of Age,” an episode that really uses his youth to its advantage by having him take the Starfleet Academy entrance exam. And he gets pretty far! He even figures out that Rondon is a Zaldan, so Wesley realizes that apologizing for getting run into himself is the wrong reaction for that culture and comes away looking like a badass.
Tumblr media
Teamwork makes the dream work Speaking of “Coming of Age,” Wesley is also this close to solving the dynamics relationships test first when he helps Mordock figure it out too. Wesley’s natural affinity for helping his crewmates is more important to him than getting the top score, which TAC Officer Chang takes into consideration in the final results. I’m not sure it helped much, but it’s a good character moment.
Tumblr media
You never forget your first “I'm never going to feel this way about anyone else,” Wesley says to Guinan after watching his first crush leave in “The Dauphin.” Strangely, it’s a very mature little conversation considering Wesley was ready to write Salia off as some kind of alien monster earlier in the episode. But he learns to accept her differences, score some relationship experience points, and get his first smooch.
Tumblr media
The minute you walk through that door they’re your team Slowly, the show starts putting Wesley in more age-appropriate situations in which he isn’t just saving the day, so it’s fitting for him to be overwhelmed when leading his first committee in “Pen Pals.” His team member Davies effectively takes over because Wes initially lacks confidence, but he soon takes charge and they work together to save Drema IV. Go team!
Tumblr media
You told me to improvise During the war games in “Peak Performance,” Wesley thinks outside the box and retrieves one of his many, many experiments from the Enterprise to use on the less advantaged Hathaway. While Riker initially accuses young Crusher of cheating, no one said he couldn’t sneak tools off the other ship, and it’s that kind of ingenuity that could be useful in a fight.
Tumblr media
Begin by letting go of your guilt, Wesley His mother Beverly may be on full display in “Remember Me” as we discussed last week, but Wesley also gets some interesting development. Back in “Where No One Has Gone Before” the Traveler saw potential in the child prodigy, and when the two of them use their special powers here to open the door for Dr. Crusher to return from the warp bubble, we witness some of that weird potential get unlocked.
Tumblr media
I’ve done it all because I want you to be proud of me We joke a lot on the podcast that Picard is secretly Wesley’s father, and it’s mostly for laughs. But when we get touching scenes between the two of them like the one in “Final Mission,” we think we may be onto something. Stranded on a planet without water, Wesley keeps an injured Picard alive (can’t say the same for Dirgo, but whatever), fueling paternity theories for years to come.
Tumblr media
I just lost the game After Wesley leaves the crew after “Final Mission,” his appearances are more methodical, and thus his character feels more and more appropriate each time. In “The Game,” he’s just visiting but his tendency to see how things work helps him and Lefler to discover that the video game everyone’s playing is actually harmful before the whole crew turns on them.
Tumblr media
I would like to add something to my testimony We get even more glimpses of how far Wesley has come when he’s attending Starfleet Academy in “The First Duty.” All of Nova Squadron has lied about the circumstances of Josh Albert’s flight accident, and it’s Wesley who comes clean in the end because he can’t bear the guilt and the dishonesty of covering up their nefarious actions. Take that, Locarno!
Tumblr media
These people deserve better than to be removed from their homes We found Picard’s actions inexcusable and entirely out of character in “Journey’s End” but you know who was actually on point? Wesley freakin’ Crusher. How on earth the boy was the only Starfleet-adjacent person to actually try to defend the colonists on Dorvan V is beyond us. It strikes us as opposing Federation ideals to force the colonists to move, and Wes knows that.
Tumblr media
I had to find my own path Finally, it is a fabulous resolution to the Wesley Crusher character for him to decide on his own to leave Starfleet and go with the Traveler to discover his true potential in “Journey’s End.” For too many kids, it’s the parents who put pressure on them to walk certain paths, and we celebrate Wes for finding his own. Ya know, until he’s randomly back in Starfleet for that cut scene from Nemesis for some reason.
Worst moments
Tumblr media
Wesley Saves the Day! Okay, I’m gonna lump all the obnoxious “Wesley Saves the Day!” instances into one blurb because it’s so damn repetitive. Every single time, Wesley – a child amidst some of Starfleet’s best of the best – figures out some impossible engineering problem before any of the adults in the room can, and we got so tired of it.
Whether it’s by getting drunk and taking over engineering only to use his reverse tractor beam in “The Naked Now,” or saving the day with the Traveler in “Where No One Has Gone Before,” or spotting Picard’s brain scan from across the room and deducing there are Ferengi shenanigans afoot in “The Battle,” or cracking the lock on the holodeck door while La Forge had already admitted defeat in “The Big Goodbye,” or seeing through Lore’s disguise as we mentioned above while all the adults in the room tell him to shut up in “Datalore,” or probably a ton of others all from the first season, it was clear no one knew how to write him except as some kind of magical prodigy. Alakazam!
Tumblr media
Keep off the grass It’s all the more clear that having a child character on the crew is just a cringey idea in “Justice.” Sure, it could have been anyone who broke the stringent rules of the Edo, but just the fact that it’s Wesley gallumphing through a flower bed like an uncoordinated doofus, destroying it utterly, makes us roll our eyes and seriously wish they’d let them execute the brat.
Tumblr media
Frosty the no-no man Let us not forget that it was Wesley who hit the captain with a snowball in “Angel One,” an immature and obnoxious little scene that seems to prove Picard’s point that letting children run roughshod all over the ship is an inconvenience at best and a liability at worst. And it happens to be the latter in this episode, because he ends up getting the whole ship sick with some disease!
Tumblr media
Drug Abuse Resistance Education is futile! While we can go on about Wesley’s whole exchange with Tasha about drug addiction in “Symbiosis,” what’s most egregious is how sheltered and clueless Wesley (normally some kind of child genius) has to be to not understand how narcotics work in the first place. It’s such a forced scene that we can just feel the Reagan Era war on drugs sentimentality written all over.
Tumblr media
I guess leaving’s gotten easy for you It’s easy to find fault with “The Outrageous Okona” – it is my least favorite TNG episode, after all. Literally everyone in this episode is annoying, and as usual, that includes Wesley who first idolizes the charming rogue, then seems really judgey of his independent and carefree lifestyle, and finally he sasses the guy into making him conclude the soap opera plot of the episode.
Tumblr media
How do you tell each other apart? It’s a pretty cheap joke when Wesley meets Mendon in “A Matter of Honor” and mistakes him for Mordock, whom we met in “Coming of Age.” I can’t tell if the writers were trying to make a racist “you people all look alike” kind of gag, but regardless, it makes Wesley look like an idiot for not knowing anything about Benzites and Benzite culture.
Tumblr media
Klingons hate surprise parties Everything Wesley does in “The Icarus Factor” is annoying. He blathers like a maniac at the impatient Klingon, but then takes that impatience to assume something greater is going on than just being fed up with an obnoxious tween like anyone else would be. But to make things more exasperating, the little twerp is right, as he always is, and throws Worf an Age of Ascension party. Ugh.
Tumblr media
I think that everything that’s been going wrong might be my fault It’s not until season three that, instead of saving the day as he did so many times already, Wesley actually screws up big by releasing the nanites in “Evolution.” While it’s refreshing to see Wes finally admit to some kind of flaw, his escaped nanites end up taking over the ship and start attacking people. And what’s worse is that he tries to lie about it until Guinan catches him!
Tumblr media
Broccoli on the side You’ll remember this from La Forge’s spotlight as well, but Geordi reveals in “Hollow Pursuits” that it was Wesley who initiated the cruel nickname “Broccoli” for Lt. Barclay. Wes, you might still be a child, but you’re in a room with adults so stop acting like one! I don’t know what’s worse: being such a dick to one of your coworkers, or all the adults in the room condoning it.
Tumblr media
I’m the one trapped in the bubble As if his misadventure in “Evolution” weren’t enough, Wesley botches another science experiment in “Remember Me” and nearly gets his mother killed in a pocket dimension! I know we just gave him some credit for bringing her back (though I mostly give that credit to the Traveler), someone’s got to stop letting Wes hook shit up to the warp core just because he’s the CMO’s kid! Nepotism much?
Tumblr media
The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth Here’s another Wesley moment that ended up on both lists because as much as we can see the character growth and lesson learned when he comes clean in “The First Duty,” it also needs to be said that he is fully prepared to follow Nick Locarno like a little sheep. Wesley almost certainly wouldn’t have done the right thing in the end if Picard hadn’t basically threatened him first!
Tumblr media
You are out! Auf wiedersehen! Finally, we would be remiss if we didn’t poopoo Wesley’s fashion choices. Again. It’s a trainwreck of a fashion show. Sweater after sweater – all oversized, hideously patterned, and monstrously ugly. Ames has the full write up in an early blogpost: Wesley's Sweaters: An Unfashionable Collection, but this coral nightmare from “Where No One Has Gone Before” might take the cake.
Well, we’re off to go exploring with the Traveler, so that’s gonna wrap things up for this one. We’re back next week with more characters to spotlight and also more Enterprise to watch over on the podcast, which you can find on SoundCloud or wherever you listen. You can also get our help on your Academy entrance exams over on Facebook and Twitter, and watch out for those flowers!

the thing is you could have such an interesting dynamic going on beteen Beverly, Wesley, Jack and Picard but nooooo. The fact that Jack has an older half brother and his dad is the man who acted as Wesley's sort of surrogate father for a few years doesn't matter at all. The fact that Wesley spent so long training to be in Star Fleet but it ended up crushing him and he left to follow his own destiny whereas Jack was raised as far away from Star Fleet as possible but is getting sucked into it anyway. The fact that JACK IS LITERALLY NAMED AFTER WESLEY'S DEAD DAD. Theres this whole thing about the Picard/Crusher family but you're missing someone! Theres this whole thing about the kids of the old guys carrying on their legacies or whatever but you're missing someone!

Pizza Night – Will Riker/Deanna Troi/Beverly Crusher
A/N: Written for the picture prompt for April on @fluffbruary .
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beverly can’t help smiling as she watches Will at the high-tech kitchen counter. It’s covered in flour and he’s making pizza bases, stretching them out ready to decorate and cook. Deanna’s curled into her side, half-asleep and clearly comfortable. She moves when he burns himself, again, and cleans his hand before using her dermal regenerator to fix the mild burns, noting the way he flinches and laughing softly. She may have wondered how to fit into the family dynamic Will and Deanna have, but here, like this, it all feels right. “Maybe we should just use the replicators next time?”

20 questions for fic writers
shamelessly stolen from @sapphicsandscience <3 questions and rambly answers beneath the read more!
How many works do you have on AO3?
63.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
451,140.
I’m kind of impressed that it’s almost half a million, but also just how much I wrote in the last two years after not writing/publishing anything at all in 2021.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Currently, Star Trek: TNG and PIC. Before that, the fandom I wrote the most for was Once Upon a Time. Everything else was just two or three fics, at least on AO3. I’ve been writing fic for decades so there are A LOT of fics and fandoms that have been lost to time. (Random shout out to Battlestar Galactica, which I wrote for back in my LiveJournal days!)
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
I’m going to do two sets here, because my All Years one are all OUAT fics no one cares about anymore, and I have enough fics published from this year to have a top five of 2023 so my current fandom has something to read that will make sense to them lol.
All Years
The Fire’s Found a Home in Me - my Dragon Outlaw Queen magnum opus, the one shot collection that makes up the bulk of my Flicker Beat universe that divulges in season four. Technically “unfinished” but complete since it was never intended to have a true ending.
It Happened Once… - a Evil Captain Charming crackfic that honestly has way more kudos than I expected. This one for some reason sees a lot of traction still. It was originally supposed to have a just-as-cracky sequel, but I never finished it.
A Loaded God Complex - ah, Golden Queen, my guilty pleasure OUAT ship. Set in s6, this was the start of a set of one-shots that took the romantic Golden Queen that finally blossomed in that season and ran with it. Mostly involves a lot of dark power struggles masking as sex. Aptly all titled after Fall Out Boy lyrics, if I say so myself.
Put Your Venom in Me - another Golden Queen fic, see above.
The Computation - a little Dragon Queen one-shot I did, short and sweet. Honestly surprised it’s on here, because it’s not my best work by any means.
2023
peace - my Picard/Crusher fic set directly after the epilogue in the PIC s3 finale. I was pleasantly surprised by how much attention this fic has gotten. I had suspected I would end up writing a prequel, but I never thought it’d turn into the four part series that it has. I hope everyone still enjoys it.
Mastermind - the first Star Trek: TNG fic I wrote since I was a teenager watching TNG for the first time! This was entirely thanks to my friend Jess, if I’m remembering correctly? She prompted me to rewrite the season 2 episode “Manhunt” with Beverly in it instead of Pulaski, because my favorite toxic trait of Beverly’s is her jealousy.
what could’ve been, should’ve been (you) - my PIC s3 Picard/Crusher masterpiece. I got the idea for this by the end of episode two, struggled with it as the season went on, and then finally wrangled it into something that I truly love.
in the business of misery - jealous!Beverly makes a reappearance in this s4 TNG fic that fixes QPid. Because fuck Vash, okay.
trustfall - dlfshfsl this fic. If what could’ve been, should’ve been (you) is my PIC masterpiece, I think trustfall is my TNG one. I disparage it a bit by talking as if it’s shameless smut, but honestly I’m quite proud of it as a character piece as Picard and Beverly navigate a new relationship and new dynamics across 11k of words. Set in TNG s3, post-Sarek.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try to! I genuinely appreciate comments, because I find it quite difficult to give them myself, so as a part of trying to be better I also try to respond to comments. I’m an awkward turtle, though, so I feel like I usually end up babbling about things people probably did not care about. If I don’t babble, I usually just leave a short and sweet “thanks for reading” that I hope doesn’t come across as insincere.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Probably Winter Song, a OUAT fic I actually wrote for a holiday fandom advent calendar we did back in the OQ fandom. It’s a wedding fic, and smutty as is my usual, but it’s got a heavy dose of sadness. I sort of tried to make it hopeful in the end, because ending a Christmas fic with no hope felt like I was killing Christmas.
Another OUAT fic I wrote, A Spark to Ignite, was also really angsty, now that I think about it and doesn’t involve any character death (canon or otherwise). It was supposed to have a part two that fixed it but I never wrote it.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Oooh. I’ll be polite and not take “happiest ending” to be dirty, even though I could list SO MANY fics for that.
bound to break, my Greatest Showman AU that I wrote for Outlaw Queen (OUAT fandom, again) ends pretty cleancut happily after having some angst in the middle. And it’s technically a multi chapter fic, though it’s short lol.
I Know, I Know, I Know (I Feel the Same as You) as my Outlaw Queen college AU always makes me happy when I think about the ending.
8. Do you get hate on fic?
Not really. I’ve gotten some comments that were definitely unnecessary and mean-spirited, but nothing major. Truthfully, I’m not nearly a big enough deal to get hate.
9. Do you write smut?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Sorry, nothing against anyone who doesn’t, but writing smut is basically all I do. It’s what I was known for in my previous fandom. It’s the thing I find the easiest to write, and secretly I suffer from a lot of insecurity because I feel like it’s the only thing I actually write very well. For a bit, in the OUAT fandom, I felt a little like a smut jukebox and it was entirely my own fault. But I wrote a lot of fun things and ultimately I enjoy writing smut.
10. Do you write crossovers?
I definitely have in my distant fic writing past, but nothing recently. OUAT almost counts as a canon crossover, given the story of it.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not to my knowledge.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No, not really. My great network of fic writing friends have definitely provided excellent guidance and suggestions that have been enormously helpful, and that’s the closest I’ve gotten.
14. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
Lol I feel like this is impossible to answer? My current hyperfixation is Picard/Crusher, and that’s a ship I’ve loved for a very, very long time. So maybe it’s that. But I’ll always hold a place in my heart for Outlaw Queen and Dragon Outlaw Queen (especially for the latter, since I wrote SO MUCH of it). Adama/Roslin is my OTP from back in my LiveJournal days that will also be special to me.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t?
Funnily enough, it’s not a Star Trek one, even though that’s my current fandom. The WIP I really, really wish I had finished is Where the Burn Marks Form. I had SUCH PLANS for Dragon Outlaw Queen and Calida and got too intimidated by what I wanted to do to actually write it. Sometimes I think it’s for the best though, because I think any remaining DOQ fans might have been sad about what all was supposed to happen (though it was always supposed to have a happy ending).
16. What are your writing strengths?
Smut. Once upon a time (lol), threesomes in particular. Ironically I used to struggle a bit with writing just two people having sex after writing so much Dragon Outlaw Queen, but I find it not as difficult anymore.
Character voices. Not to brag, but something I pride myself on is getting a character’s voice right. It’s something I work very hard at, and stress a lot over, but generally feel like I succeed.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Literally anything else? You want long, detailed plotty fic? Sorry, can I interest you in a smutty one shot instead. You want something angsty? Not really my style. You want a well-plotted completely alternate universe fic? LOL please, I write fic so I don’t have to world build. Canon compliant or canon divergence or bust, baby.
I write on vibes, and I’m sure sometimes that is blatantly obvious. I have the vaguest of plans whenever I sit down to write something, and I go from there. Probably someday I should try to have actual concrete plans and not just “hmm what if i do this” vibes.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Lol okay let me piss off the entire Picard/Crusher fandom real quick: IN MY OPINION, it is annoying to write dialogue in another language unless it’s like… blatantly obvious what you’re saying. Very rarely is there a point to it, and it can be easily sidestepped by “blah blah blah,” he said in French. Basic phrases, sure. Pet names, have at it! Several sentences in another language?
Look I don’t speak French. If you put French in your fic, I’m having to pull out Google translate and heaven help me if it’s dirty talk, because now Google is translating “I want to fuck you,” to English from different languages (French, it’s French, I didn’t have this problem in my other fandoms). I wish if people were going to do that, they’d at least make a footnote (I would 100% be willing to find out how to format it) and!!! I think you can still use html to set it up so that when you hover over text, it gives you a little mouseover text where you can have the translation!!! That way I don’t have to one: try and scroll down to the end notes hoping for a translation and thus breaking my immersion as I scroll back up, or at least if it’s a footnote it’ll have an anchor taking me back to the sentence in question.
Sorry rant over, everyone please continue writing however you wish, I will deal. And honestly if you use the same French phrases enough I’ll learn them anyway, so it won’t matter in the long run. This absolutely is not a deal breaker for me when it comes to reading a fic, it’s just a pet peeve.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Um, probably Harry Potter but that is my long-forgotten days.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
trustfall as mentioned above for Star Trek: TNG. With trustfall, it was maybe the second or third fic I wrote for Star Trek (I mean, at least not counting back when I was in my early teens writing for it) and I really think it's just some of my best work? It's a smut fic, but I think there's really, really good character exploration in it. It easily could have just been a fic where Beverly soft dommes Jean-Luc and all you get is that final scene, but I think the build up really makes it worth it. idk idk I have a lot of feels for this fic lolol.
Wishes in the Dark for OUAT. My key party in Storybrooke fic!! aka my Awkward David fic. I think this is one of the best fics I've written, period, for a lot of the same reasons as above. It's 30k, it's got Dragon Outlaw Queen, but more importantly it's got David lusting after Regina and Mal and getting the chance to sleep with them with Snow's permission... and then also Robin joins in and David realizes some things about himself. There's a whoooole side quest of things that was supposed to happen after this story that I never wrote. It's also got some really tender Evil Charming, because I couldn't resist.
And that's all folks! Thanks for reading if you made it this far, I know I really rambled. <3

this week's episode was just really beautiful??
the flashbacks dispersed throughout the story really helped carry the emotional tone, from how to survive helpless scenarios, to teamwork, to family. (oh picard, you really really failed there)
the deep conversations all the characters had. riker and picard. picard and jack. shaw and picard. (ouch) riker and troi.
the picard-crusher-riker dynamic (+ special mention to crusher jr.) and how they guide all the crew out of there.
the nebula being some form of alien life and beverly being the one to figure all of this out. also the colours at the end were just magnificent.
also so so many gorgeous shots from director jonhatan frakes.
this may be my favourite one yet...
