How Can He Know If You Won’t Tell Him?
Rated: Teen &+ | Words: 2.1k | Read on ao3
Eddie didn't know how he got here.
Well, that's not entirely true. He was the one who asked Buck to go on a hike. It had been a long week and an even longer shift and Eddie was aware of the distance that had been growing between him and his best friend. It had been slowly suffocating him; the chasm of silence was overwhelming. He could feel it every time Buck begged off, every time they went home to separate houses, every time Chris asked where he was. It wasn’t what they did, it wasn’t how they worked, it wasn’t Buck and Eddie. He felt as if he’d gone mad.
So he invited Buck to their favorite trail hoping that some time away from siblings and friends and distractions could give them the space they need to actually talk. Talk about Connor and Kameron, talk about what Buck was truly feeling about the situation, talk about anything important, anything that would prove they were still best friends.
But here, now, the anger that thrummed through his veins, the exasperation that pooled in his belly, the frustration that curled his fingers-how did he get here? Truthfully, he could have probably connected all the dots that lead to this feeling. The unspoken words, the charged glances, the way his heart had been yearning for something he refused to name for so long, for too long.
“I mean,” said Buck, running his hand over the back of his head. “It’s not like I’m gonna have my own kids. No one wants me enough to be stuck with me for that long.”
A surge of irritation coursed through his veins. Buck continued his melancholic rant but Eddie wasn’t hearing him any more.
It’s just - Buck just - how could he not know?! How could Buck not see? Not see how much he gave away, how much he helped, how much he was wanted. Wanted by his family, wanted by his friends, wanted by Chris- Chris who looked to Buck almost more than he looked to Eddie, Chris who just asked for Buck to chaperone a field trip, Chris who missed Buck just as much as Eddie did.
God, Eddie missed Buck. Missed his best friend, missed his support, missed his laugh, his real, genuine laugh, not the self deprecating one that Buck had been favoring. He wanted their banter back, wanted their dynamic back, wanted Buck to come back to him… Eddie just wanted Buck. He knew that, he did. He wanted Buck in a way that was astronomically different from the way you were supposed to want a best friend. He wanted Buck in his house every day, wanted Buck to make their kid breakfast on Saturdays, wanted Buck to feel safe, and loved, and happy, and with him. It was there at the back of his mind everyday, but he never let himself think about it. Because Buck never seemed to want the same things. Because Eddie didn’t know how to voice his feelings. Because he was scared that this secret would ruin his friendship with the most important person in his life.
‘How could he know, if you won’t tell him?’
The voice sounded like Linda’s - one of the few people Eddie had voiced any of these thoughts and feelings too. Linda quickly became a friend while he was working at dispatch. She was there when he started seeing Frank again, and she was there when Eddie admitted to himself what these feelings added up to. At the time, he had felt like an outsider. Donato had taken his spot at the 118, Taylor was in the picture, and Eddie felt like he couldn't talk to anyone in the firehouse. So he talked to Linda. Linda was his lifeline at the time, his North Star guiding him home in a time when he was untethered, floating around in his misery. Linda had repeatedly advocated for Buck- how can he know Eddie was an option, if Eddie never told him?
She wasn’t wrong, Eddie knew, but.. That’s just it. But, but, but.. But what if Buck doesn’t reciprocate, but what if he’d be disgusted, but what if he hates Eddie for the feelings he couldn’t control.
“I think I’m just going to accept that I’ll be alone forever.” Eddie tuned back to the soft timber of Buck’s voice. The blond walked next to him with eyes trained on the trail ahead of them, fingers that drummed out a staccato beat on his thigh. The self pity poured off of him in waves and Eddie saw a frown on his mouth, small and almost not there, but still it pulled down those plump lips. That small down curve of  Buck’s lips, lips that should have been smiling, lips that should have been laughing, lips that should have been carefree opened up something inside him. Something crawling and clawing and howling its way up his chest.. He suddenly couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think, couldn’t feel anything at all.
‘He has to know.’

Buck/Eddie, Buck/Tommy, Eddie/Buck/Tommy | 28K | rated: Explicit | complete! | ao3
“You can come home with us," Buck blurts out. "Or we can take you home. But— but you should. You should come home with us.”
For that, Eddie does look up at him. But only for half a second. “I,” Eddie starts slowly. “I wouldn’t want to. Interrupt. Or be in the way. You’re on a date. I’m fine. You don’t have to worry. I don’t care about her or the break up. I’m over it. So over it.”
Eddie wants to be with them. Eddie wants to be with Tommy. Of course he wants to be with Tommy. Tommy is amazing. Buck’s stomach twists and he doesn’t know how to breathe or what to say. Or why he’s not panicking about his best friend being into his boyfriend, and his boyfriend clearly being open to having sex with his best friend. He should be panicking.
What if Eddie is into men? What if Tommy could awaken that in Eddie just like he did with Buck? What if that could happen?
“You wouldn’t be in the way,” Tommy says as he finds Buck’s hand under the table and holds it tightly.
“Right,” Buck adds. “You wouldn’t be. You could,” Oh god. What does he say. How does he say. “You could be— with us.”
~
In which Buck wants his boyfriend to give his best friend a queer awakening like he had. For no particular reason at all. While also having the most inopportune "Oh" moment ever.

Albert: Hey Buckaroo, what’s the colour of Eddie’s hair?
Buck: Oh, inky black like the darkest night, and has a slight sheen that reminds me of a raven’s obsidian feathers, and when the sun bounces off—
Albert: Mm-hmm. What’s the colour of Maddie’s hair?
Buck: Brown.

Me thinking of all the jealous, pining, petty, Eddie Diaz content we could end up with after he finds out about Buck, and Buck & Tommy:
Tumblr media
The potential of it all and not to mention Buck x Tommy. IT'S GONNA BE GREAT!!!!

every part of you (simple as that) | 2.8k
"Do you ever think about having kids?" The words fall from Buck's lips the moment Tommy returns from the bar with their beers. He flounders a little, mouth opening and closing like he can suck the words back in. To his credit, Tommy only blinks in surprise and takes a second too long to unwrap his fingers from the neck of the bottle when Buck reaches for it.
"Uh, no, not really," he says carefully, evenly. And Buck's only the tiniest bit disappointed that it doesn't fluster the man more. Tommy just joins him in leaning against the railing of the gazebo, hip and shoulder solid points of contact that Buck relishes in. The warm, strong weight of Tommy against him soothing the pacing dog in his chest. "I mean, I used to. When I still thought I was straight." He huffs a little laugh at himself, and Buck shares in it. A new feeling, wistful amusement. The years lost to a question you never thought to ask, or one you couldn't find the courage to answer. "It's what you do, you know? You find a nice woman, you get married, you have kids."
"Mm," Buck hums ins agreement, taking a sip of his own beer. It's a thought he's had countless times, a thought he continues to have, but now it's not always a woman standing up there at the altar with him. "You don't think about it now?"
"I never really considered it. Not with the job and everything." Tommy sighs, deep and heavy, before turning to face Buck head on. Something raw and vulnerable creeps into his eyes, and Buck finds himself standing a little steadier ready to catch whatever fragile thing Tommy is about to hand him. "The army, firefighting, Harbour. My mortality has never been a sticking point for me. I was always thinking: well, if I die, I die."
Buck sucks in a sharp breath, the words slicing through his skin like shards of a mirror long since shattered, settling in his gut like a stone of dread. How many times had he thought the exact same? How many times will he have to pay for his own carelessness by caring for someone he could lose so easily?
"I've made sure to live a life that would leave very little behind," Tommy continues. "Or I had. Until recently."
"Oh, yeah?" Buck raises an eyebrow, heart skipping once then twice. "What changed?"
"I think..." Tommy's voice is low as he sways into Buck's space. "I think I found something to stick around for."

One thing that was very interesting to me in this episode is the way Eddie was just... not joking about Buck's love interests.
That stuck out.
Usually when Eddie talks to Buck about his love interests, it's with an edge of fond exasperation, teasing laced around his gently delivered truths, but there was none of that this episode. Buck told Eddie he went to see Natalia and it was like something switched. Eddie's entire affect changed when Buck started talking about Natalia. He went from being loose and easy (as loose and easy as one can get when standing at a grave) to being... not combative, necessarily, but visibly actively not wanting to engage in conversation about her either, and it's not...
It's not even jealousy!! We joke a lot about Eddie and jealousy, but it wasn't that at all. It was a fatigue that comes with silence, that comes with holding your tongue, that comes with keeping secrets. Especially when Buck said that he feels like Natalia sees him. That look Eddie gave him immediately after? That was pure hurt. That was him saying I see you too, I've always seen you. But he can't say that. He can't say that, because to say that would be to say so many other things about the way he sees Buck, and to say so many other things would mean to have to unstick his tongue from the roof of his mouth about the ONE thing he's been holding onto ever since he was shot.
I don't know. I don't know, but I think Eddie taking Buck on a date and I think about how Eddie left his son—his heart—in Buck's care so they could bake cookies together (which becomes profoundly more significant in an episode where Christopher was talking about baking smores with his mom), and I think about Kenny saying Ryan has been doing some very nuanced work in the back half of this season, I'm like
Oh. Oh. I see it, thank you. Loud and clear.
#Before 5B I was like 'Eddie's pining era Eddie's pining era WHEN?'#but babes we are right in the thick of it. It's in his eyes. It's in his smile. It's in the way he looks Buck#in the way he treats him. In the way he creates space for his confusion for his fatigue for his grief.#In the way he shows quiet support and a stern shoulder to lean upon#In the way he doesn't burden Buck with his own feelings (even though that's mostly selfish on his part because#no part of Eddie will ever be a burden on Buck but Eddie doesn't know that yet)#It's just. Eddie's feelings for Buck are literally in *everything* he says and everything he does#It bleeds from him just like his blood did on that street.#If everything about Buck/Eddie's lives have been shrouded by the shooting since it happened#everything about their lives has *also* been shrouded by Eddie's enormous and unflinching love for him#and he keeps holding his breath and swallowing it down and putting off the moment where he pulls back the lid#and it all spills out and before he knows it... before he knows it#it's going to be too late. And instead of his blood staining the street it's going to be Buck's and he's going to tell him#but he won't hear him because Eddie was too slow too fucking slow#(did we all peep the watch on his wrist? Yeah. Time is running out Eddie. Time is running out and it is not going to#wait for fear to release its hold on you. Buck's not going to cheat death again. Don't waste time babe)#Anyways. Yeah. YEAH. Yeah....... whew. This episode was a Lot#jack.txt#tv: 911#911: 06 x 15#911 spoilers

just a tiny lil snippet of the bucktommy fic before I post it probably later tonight (it's basically almost done, and then I just need a title) ngl this whole fic turned out hornier than I expected but buck is just a baby bi who has his first boyfriend, and I am not immune to how hot tommy is okay 🙈 (buck and I have literally the exact same taste in men and women istg 🤣) i kinda wanted to turn it into smut but I want it posted before the episode and it turned out too long already haha
prev snippet

“When you’re ready.” Tommy says, his thumb tenderly brushing against where Buck’s birthmark is.
“Yeah.” Buck nods. “And when I am, I- Well, I bet you can teach me more stuff than just flying or Muay Thai.” he says half-jokingly, referencing the conversation right before their first kiss, when Buck didn’t even realize he was flirting until he thought back on it – which freaked him out, too, because how often did this happen before? Tommy just grins, all confident and charming, and leans in to press a soft but hungry kiss to Buck’s lips. Buck’s insides swirl and dance and make him feel all giddy and floaty.
“Oh, I can teach you. I’m gonna.” he whispers, lightly pulling at Buck’s lip. Buck almost asks him to stay. Almost tries to bring Tommy closer, and thrust his hips up to make their clothed dicks collide again, wanting to feel that pressure again. He doesn’t, though. Which requires an impressive amount of self-control, if he says so himself.

Fuck-Friday Coda
Tagged by the always lovely @theotherbuckley @perfectlysunny02 @cal-daisies-and-briars @aroeddiediaz @exhuastedpigeon @hippolotamus @loserdiaz @wikiangela @daffi-990 @tizniz and @diazsdimples Thank you all so much for all the tags throughout the week and today! I have eased back on working NFL Buck because I am absolutely swamped with school. I have started clinic rounds and somehow the classwork has doubled for the next set of courses. Which holy crap. So a lot of my days are for studying, homework, and quizzes. Add on being a mom/house wife and yea, not a ton of time to work on my favorite WIP. But I am making time on Thursday to watch the newest 9-1-1 episodes and write codas, because I started them in the final episodes of season 6 and really enjoyed it! So I made a goal to make a coda for most if not all of season 7 episodes! 2/2! I will try my absolute damnest to get some work into NFL Buck because it is my baby and I know how much it is beloved. Until then, enjoy the season 7 codas. Posted to ao3.

“We-I…” Buck tries to find the right words again, but he has no idea what they should be.  He doesn’t know if he should be defending himself along with Eddie and Chimney, proclaim that they were just being honest with internal affairs. Or if he should defend Hen and the betrayal she felt when they couldn’t back her up.
Rock and a hard place, with Buck being squeezed tightly in between.
Chimney left the locker-room soon after Hen, with the passing false hope comment, “She’ll come around.”  His phone was half-way to his ear before disappearing around the ladder truck, most likely spilling the entire ordeal to Maddie.
Buck slumps back down on the bench and leans his head against the lockers, closing his eyes with a defeated sigh. Still standing close by, Buck hears Eddie hum in agreement. Yea, tonight was very much a downer.
“We should have had her back.” Buck finally says.
He feels additional weight added to bench and pressing warmth along his arm and thigh when Eddie sits beside him. “We did. We just all put our foots in our mouths trying to show her.” He assured.  He gives Buck knee a gentle squeeze, “You more than me with that whole ‘right call’ comment and wanting to give Captain Collier’s a hard time.”
Buck groans in embarrassment, “I was trying and horribly failing to lighten the mood.”
“The mood was dead on arrival; you had no chance.” Eddie chuckles.
They both go silent, stewing in the hurt emotions left behind by Hen and Chimney, mixing with their own anxiety and worry. It kind of reminds Buck of the last time Hen was captain and that man died at the happiness convention. God that felt like so long ago, when really is less than a year.  Yet here they all are, questioning themselves on the job after losing a patient and without Bobby’s steady leadership to help guide them through it.
Buck could only hope this didn’t send him or anyone else on the team into a spiral of questioning their purpose in life. And he really hoped it didn’t lead to another brush with death, for anyone of them.
The hand on Buck’s knee never left and gave another squeeze, pulling him from his past wallows and has his eyes fluttering open. He looks over at Eddie and sees an understanding smile gracing his lips. “That man’s death isn’t on us. We we’re working on the worst of the crash, and we saved that girl and her mother.  Hen made the right call, the same one Bobby would have made and when those lab results concur with her story, she’ll be back, and we’ll find a way to make it up to her.”
Buck takes a moment to let Eddie’s words sink it and pull him from the beginnings of a self-deprecating spiral. He did his job, he gave his facts of the event truthfully, and Hen would come around. In all regards, Buck just needed to learn how not to put his foot in his mouth, because at the moment it really was a nasty taste.
Slowly most of the tension that had built up during Hen’s confrontation eases away and Eddie felt it through the press of his shoulder into Buck’s, “That has to be a record.” He comments before getting to his feet and reaching a hand out.
Buck doesn’t even hesitate and tries his damnest not to flush too red as Eddie hauls him to his feet with little to no effort. The man has a girlfriend and Buck was done chasing. “Uh yea. Turns out when you stop trying to search for the life’s great moments and instead live in them, internal spiraling is easier to pull out of.” He explains. Eddie also is a big contributor, but Buck isn’t going to admit that to said man.
“Well… At least those self-help books will make good kindling for the next campfire.” Eddie cackles and Buck swats at his shoulder which only makes him laugh harder.
Eventually Buck joins in and the pit of dread dwindles further. He embraces this moment and knows eventually everything is going to be okay.

summary:
Why the hell was Buck calling him so late?
“Buck?”
There was some static and shuffling on the other end, Eddie wondering if Buck had butt dialed him or something.
“Buck?” Eddie tried again, the man’s voice finally greeting him.
“EDDIE!”
It was way too loud and excitable for the time of the night, but Eddie found himself smiling for it all the same.
“How much have you had to drink?”
“Where are you?” was the excited response he got, Eddie’s heart aching a little for it.
“I’m at home, in bed, where you should probably be.”
“I’d like to be in your bed.”
Eddie swallowed thickly. Buck sounded cocky, flirty.
Thankfully Buck spoke again, Eddie unable to come up with anything coherent.
“S’no-no fun w’out you.”
Buck sounded pouty, Eddie all but seeing his lower lip stuck out over the phone.
“No fun without me, huh? What ah, what would we be doing if I was there?”
—or—
Drunk Buck calls Eddie, Eddie picks him up. There's pining, with a hint of angst, and soft slutty shenanigans

Everything is gonna be all fun and games at the wedding until the reception, where Buck and Eddie are talking at the bar and Tommy pulls Buck away for a dance. And as they're on the dance floor, Eddie is looking at Buck and how happy he is with Tommy before deciding to turn away to ask for a drink and possibly chat with another guest.
And all the while he's looking elsewhere, Buck is looking at him from over Tommy's shoulder, longing and not even realizing.

Buck slid into Eddie’s bed, his limbs loose and warm from alcohol and the feeling of home. He stifled a yawn as he curled up under the blankets, watching Eddie with bleary eyes. Eddie was quiet as he turned off the light and slid under the covers, settling on his side so he was facing Buck.
“Are you sure you want to talk tomorrow?” Buck asked, his voice so quiet it was practically a whisper.
“Yeah, I think so,” Eddie murmured back. “I want to hear it when you’re sober.”
“Makes sense,” Buck got out before interrupting himself with a yawn. “I might be hungover, though. I can’t drink like I used to.”
“I’ll wait however long you need me to, Buck,” Eddie said softly, but Buck was already asleep. Eddie grinned, awash with love for his best friend, his partner in everything. “Goodnight, Buck.”
And with that, Eddie let his eyes flutter shut and fell asleep, happily curled up beside the love of his life.

Several Sentence Sunday
Hi, I'm back with a (large) snippet of Frostpunk AU, this one set before the last one because I cannot write chronologically it seems. Also I've had beans for the smut at the end of this so who knows, the next snip might be some seggs!
The coals lying in the firepit in the middle of the cabin are still warm, indicating another scouting team had been here not too long ago. Tommy starts up the fire as Eli gives Edmundo a once over, and then helps Buck to release Christopher from his burrow in Buck’s clothes. Both Edmundo and Christopher’s temperatures are up a couple of degrees, giving Buck hope that they might make it back in time. Edmundo’s heart is still racing, and his breathing is still shallow. Buck watches as Eli’s face goes tight when he reads the amount of oxygen in Edmundo’s blood, and he pulls Bobby aside for a hushed conversation. “10 bucks says the kid makes it, but the dad doesn’t,” Sal says as he settles himself between Buck and Tommy on the floor. Immediately, Buck’s blood boils. That’s someone’s life Sal’s talking about, betting on an outcome that would make Christopher an orphan (Buck assumes, he has no idea what happened to the boy’s mother) and would turn the kid’s life upside down. Sal’s usually a decent enough guy but sometimes, he can be a total prick. “Twenty says they make it back to the city and both survive,” Buck replies fiercely. “They’re going to make it. They’ve got to.” “Buck, man, don’t get too attached,” Tommy says placatingly, resting his hand on Buck’s shoulder. “We can’t save everyone.” Buck shrugs it off, annoyed. “I’m not getting attached,” he insists, though as the words leave his mouth, he knows they’re not entirely true. He’s spent four hours holding this kid close to him, sharing his warmth and energy so the boy might survive. It’s hard not to feel some kind of responsibility towards him. Not helped by the fact that as he walked behind Tommy, Eli, and the stretcher, he couldn’t help but catalogue Edmundo’s features, too. The way his eyelashes stood out against his cheeks, long and brown against the olive of his skin. The way his lips were slightly parted as he breathed, full and pink and just a little bit chapped from the wind. The way the wind would rustle through his hair, making it fluffy and pillow-like, with the occasional wavy strand falling over his forehead. Buck’s not blind, he can appreciate beauty when he sees it, but there’s something more to Edmundo. Something in the way he waited to know his son was safe before he let himself succumb to the exhaustion, as though he valued his son’s life more than his own. Or perhaps the way he’d sought out Buck’s hand, clinging to him the way a small child clings to their father in the face of fear. Edmundo may seem like a tough, no-nonsense man on paper, with his credentials from the military, but Buck can tell that deep down, he’s a lost boy, trying to find his way home. It makes Buck want to protect him and Christopher all the more.
