Okay Rohan-centric fandom, talk to me about Éothain.
I want your headcanons, your metas, your hot-takes, your weird "I read this fic once and haven't been able to get this idea out of my head since even though it has no basis in canon at all" ideas.
I've seen folks muse on the fact that he might be related to the House of Eorl himself given how he acts towards/around Éomer in his one scene, or perhaps is second-in-command of the éored; I've seen takes where he was one of the folks most taken-in by Wormtongue; I've seen others where he's super-loyal to Rohan and Éomer both and is trying real hard to keep Éomer from getting into trouble by helping the Three Hunters in violation to Théoden's commands and in fact his main role in life is "try (and fail) to keep Éomer out of trouble"...
But I haven't quite decided what direction to run with him in the Celebrimbor Fellowship AU I'm writing. So if anyone has thoughts on the lad they want to share in order to influence said depiction (or just because they have some passionate thoughts about this dude who shoes up once in the story, disses our heroes, and then vanishes, and they relish any excuse to scream about him), please do so now!

Elfwine Chronicles (new LoTR stories, Envy posted, 1-27-24)
Eothain offers his view of his relationship with the royal pair (Envy, Romance)
(September, 12 IV)
In times of war, there are usually three types of men with regard to women. Some will seek casual pleasure with any woman who will welcome them into their bed, preferring to keep the encounter brief and largely anonymous. The second group will marry in haste, wanting something more than mere pleasure-seeking, but they do not generally have the time needed to truly get to know the woman before they make her their bride. They enjoy a few moments comfort and then they ride back to battle, not knowing if they will ever see her again.
The last group are those who want a family, but who do not wish to subject any woman to the vagaries of their life – not knowing when they will be able to come home for a visit, not knowing if they even will return or how wounded they might be if they do, not knowing if they are leaving the woman with child and destined to be a widow.
While I do not fit in either of the first two groups, I am not sure that I entirely fit in the latter either. War has been my occupation since I was old enough to join an eored. There were women who would provide bodily comfort, in the various towns where we sometimes stopped for a night, but casual liaisons had never appealed to me. And, in truth, my mind was too focused on the enemy and our dire circumstances to allow myself such distraction. Eomer likely had his own reasons for similarly forgoing such company, though we never discussed what they might be. As a result, long, lonely, cold nights were generally spent in companionable silence or infrequent conversation between the two of us.
We both missed our homes, and were sorry that we got to spend so little time there. We both longed to one day have a family and hearth to welcome us back from patrol. But life in the Third Age was too uncertain for us to have much expectation that we would ever see that day.

‘A Stormcrow arrived late last night,’ Jorunn explains. ‘Otherwise, I would have let you sleep but I thought it might be wise you attend to the matter.’ ‘Greyhame,’ Gríma spits. She shrugs. Jorunn, to Gríma’s annoyance, seems fond of the cagey nuisance of a wizard. Like a mushroom, Gríma sneered to her once, he returns again and again bringing always with him omens of death. Of and for the dead is Gandalf. She had replied, Hardly. Though he is mercurial at times and delves into worldly affairs which often deal in death. Not unlike you. ‘Stormcrow is a neat name for him,’ Gríma continues. ‘I like it. Lathspell would be mine.’ ‘Of course it would, little dragon. Granted, some would say the same for you.’
Jorunn: Grima, have you considered the fact that you and Gandalf are two signs of the Odinnic coin possibly the reason you both hate each other vehemently?
Grima: Absolutely not. I am nothing like him.
Gandalf: Seconded, except in reverse.
Jorunn: mk.

Éomer’s uncle’s advisor, Wormtongue, wrongfully imprisons him for treason. Princess Lothíriel of Gondor agrees to represent him in court. True Love has never been more unprofessional. Cue RomCom shenanigans. (also that's Eothain who smacks Eomer lol)
A redraw of an old comic!! I was never satisfied with how the old one was (mainly my horrendous handwriting for the dialogue lol) and so I thought I'd redo it :) It's for a fun Modern au i came up with a few years ago that i kinda want to get back to sometime

✨ First drawing of your OC vs. Your recent one! ✨ And yeah, Eothaine was “Gael” when ai conceptualized him for an animation and storyboarding class. It was only during the pandemic when we played Dungeons and Dragons that I brought him back to life and revamped him so he could fit in the DnD campaign that I run. ✌️

Audiobook Review: “The Departure of Boromir” and “The Riders of Rohan”
Didn’t have enough to say about these two chapters individually to make separate posts, so I’ll just stick ‘em together.
The way Mr. Dragash does the Aragorn Yell is very funny to me and I’m not sure why. Something about that high, rasping yell just gets me every time.
On a much less funny note, Aragorn really does sound frustrated and grieved and close to tears at many points here, especially right after Boromir’s death. Makes the heart hurt.
Obviously the star of the sound design here is the noise of footsteps, which I can only assume was achieved by somebody (maybe Mr. Dragash himself??) taking a pair of boots and going clop clop clop on some gravel or rocks or a wooden table for several minutes, and that mental image just cracks me up 🤣
“The brooch of an elven cloak!” Haha they sound like they’re tripping over each other LOL
“Legolas took a deep breath, like one that drinks a great draught after long thirst in barren places.” [Deep breath through the nose… “AAAUGH, the green smell!”] ROFL DRAGASH WHAT THE HECK 🤣🤣
“The thought of those merry young folk driven like cattle burns my heart!” I love the passion with which this is spoken. I don’t think Legolas in the films ever even got close to that, save perhaps raising his voice in Helm’s Deep. It’s nice to know that he really did care deeply for the hobbits, and to hear it in his voice.
And now, Arguments in Real Time.
Hahaha Eothain sounds like such a young hotshot, it’s perfect 🤣
Once again, listening to the appearance of the old man by the fire makes it so much more creepy and suspenseful than reading it. Hair-raising and troubling, that.

Éothain's Hankie
read it on the AO3 at https://ift.tt/vQEUDZq
by AnnaFan
A spin-off from the “Twelve Days of Yuletide.”
During their madcap chase across Anorien in pursuit of an absconding Eowyn, Eothain and Elfhelm stopped off at a manor in the north of the province, where Eothain got on rather good terms with the daughter of the household, so much so that she offered him her hankie. Eothain did not realise that this was tantamount to a contract of marriage.
The action picks up on the return journey from the “Twelve Days of Yuletide.”

men of middle-earth ❅ northmen ❅ headcanon disclaimer
The Riders of Rohan were the horse-mounted warriors of the Rohirrim, divided into several éoryd led by the Marshals of the Riddermark. At the time of the War of the Ring, many riders did noble deeds and many others perished in battle. Among the éored of Éomer who overran the Uruk-hai of Uglúk were his squire Éothain, who doubted the tale of holbytlan captured by orcs, and the warriors Gárulf, Adwig, and Ethelred, who lost their lives in the fight. The Three Hunters were given horses by Éomer, Aragorn riding Hasufel, once the steed of Gárulf, while Legolas and Gimli together rode Arod, once the steed of Adwig. Ethelred’s horse, Brego, fled the battle and ran wild, until eventually he was recovered and returned to Edoras, where Aragorn soothed him into a steed worthy of riding into battle once more. Two valiant captains of the Riders were Grimbold of Grimslade, descendant of Grim, and Gamling the Old. Grimbold served under Théodred, Second Marshal of the Mark, and took command of the Fords of Isen after his prince fell, holding it until reinforcements arrived. Gamling, known in his youth as Baldwig, was an old man at the Battle of the Hornburg, but he was still a commanding presence and was the first to realize that orcs had penetrated the Deep through its culvert, and led the counter-attack himself. Dúnhere, Lord of Harrowdale and nephew of Erkenbrand, served under Grimbold in the Battle of the Fords of Isen, and later rode the muster of the Rohirrim at his homeland of Harrowdale, answering the call of the King for soldiers to fight in the War. Many riders answered and all were welcomed, including Wídfara of the Wold, Herubrand and his son Herefara, the ceorl Fastwine who had served as a messenger and won the King’s favor, and many others. Wídfara joined the éored of Elfhelm, while Herubrand, Herefara, and Fastwine were invited to Théoden’s personal éored, the King’s Riders, to replace three soldiers who had fallen at Helm’s Deep. The only warrior whose service was refused was the Lady Éowyn, the King’s sister-son, who was commanded to remain in Rohan to lead in his stead. But Éowyn would not be denied, and she disguised herself as the warrior Dernhelm and rode with the Riders to Gondor against her uncle’s orders. On the journey, she befriended Meriadoc Brandybuck, who was likewise defying Théoden’s word, and together they rode the horse Windfola into battle. In the end, the combined attack of Dernhelm and Merry were enough to slay the unkillable Witch-king of Angmar, though not in time to save the life of Théoden King. Many men fell in the Battle of Pelennor Fields, including six of the King’s Riders: Harding and Horn, valiant men both; Herefara and his father Herubrand; the ceorl Fastred, akin to Fastwine, and Guthláf the banner-bearer. So also fell Dúnhere and Déorwine and Grimbold, mighty commanders. All were remembered in the Song of the Mounds of Mundburg, a grand poem honoring those who gave their lives fighting against the Shadow, their names going down in history alongside those of Gondor’s Captains of the Outlands who also perished on that fateful day.

Elfwine Chronicles (new LoTR stories, Treason, ch. 2 posted, 12-9-23)
All evidence suggests Eothain has betrayed his king. (Action, Drama, Family, Kidnapping)
Chapter 2
“Did your council object to your releasing Eothain?” Eomer drew on his gloves as he and Elessar walked to the stables.
“They could not object since I did not seek their permission. It would only have delayed us longer, and changed nothing about my decision. As your wife noted, Eothain has broken no laws of Gondor. If his king requests his release, we have no reason to hold him.”
Eothain was waiting beside Kialmar at the stable, swordless and appearing to be a prisoner. Until they knew precisely what they were dealing with, both kings had thought it wise to pretend as though they considered Eothain culpable.
At Eomer's request, the same men who had met the king's guard that night were brought along this time. He felt certain one or more of them was behind this; he could not believe any of his own men would harm his heir or betray him so. Each man had been stringently chosen for his guard, and more than one person indicated their character was above reproach. The same could not be said of the men of Gondor. While Elessar did have a special guard for himself and his family, the bulk of Gondor's forces were enlistees, and this group of men fell into that class. Any manner of man could join the army, and their character was not too closely examined.
As they rode down through the city streets, Elessar finally broke the silence. Quietly to Eomer, he admitted, “Though I do not like to think any of my men are guilty of this heinous crime, I fear my suspicions align with yours. If the fault lies in our own ranks, mine are the more likely.”
Eomer nodded. “I do not want to judge in haste, and if the men were in your household guard, I would be more inclined to look for outside culprits. But we both know that common soldiers have not needed to prove their integrity to either of us.”
“How does Eothain fare?”
Eomer sighed. “Even if we prove his innocence, yet he will suffer the punishment of guilt that he failed to prevent it. There is little I can say to change that. Elfwine’s safe recovery will help somewhat, but not completely.”
Their respective troops met them outside the gates and the journey began.
Three men had been left at the site where they had camped, to ensure that no one came and tried to eliminate any tracks or evidence that might remain there. They reached the location by early afternoon, and after a hasty meal, the rangers and Elessar spread out to comb the area for anything that would give a clue about where Elfwine had been taken. Meanwhile, Eothain and Kialmar sketched the layout of the camp as best they remembered it, including the location of those who had been on guard through the night and where the Gondorians had been situated.
Judging Elessar and the rangers' tracking skills to be far greater than his own, Eomer remained in camp, interviewing his guards about what they remembered of that night. He did it in small groups so that anything one said might jar the memory of someone else. In the end, though, all the reports were essentially the same – nothing remarkable had taken place.

There is a story about four daughters seeking the love of their father the king. It does not end well for them. One banished, two dead, one mad. There is a story about a king demanding the love of his four daughters. It dos not end well for him. Tolerated, secretly resented, he dies without them at his bedside. Only the one son. And he there for the crown and a father’s blessing, a father’s ring.
‘Reads like a legend,’ Éomer remarks to Éothain. They have returned to Edoras and Éomer is still waiting for Théodred to make good on all those promises for men that never seem to materialize. He wonders if Gríma has something to do with it. Whenever he questions Wyrmtunga he gets dithering or denial or confusion.
‘Dangerous path, that.’
‘What?’
‘Mapping legends too closely to our own lives. Families can be vicious to each other,’ Éothain replies. ‘Who knows best how to rip one another to shreds than mothers and fathers? Sisters and brother?’
‘Cousins,’ Éomer mutters. Leofstan has trotted out of Meduseld looking bright eyed and bushy tailed.
‘Cousins,’ Éothain agrees. ‘But don’t go and do something stupid like think you’re fated or in a myth or legend. Also don’t go and do something stupid like alienate your cousin. Either of them. Also don’t go and do something stupid like get Gríma’s back up about things so he starts pestering your more than he pesters Théodred.’
‘I would never do any of that.’
Éothain lifts an eyebrow, drinks his ale. They’re watching people corral into one of the large fields outside Meduseld that is lying dormant this season and it is where the midsummer fire and festivities are to be held. A few goats penned in for the later sacrifices to the landwights and dísir. Gríma said to Éomer that morning, I think the little one with the twisty horns will do well for us all. And Éomer replied, Small, ornery, and dressed in blacks? We should chuck you in, too. See if the gods like that. Gríma had replied with silence and a withering expression of: really Éomer? that is the best you can do? Éomer, chuffed, laughed at him.
Eomer and Grima, no matter the iteration of the universe or story they are in, are just Like That all the time.

Lothiriel Queen and Eothain’s wife
2020, digital art
redbubble: https://www.redbubble.com/shop/ap/60311400
I’m still accepting requests and suggestions, and I’ve been getting a few requests for Lothiriel with friends, so I’ve done a quick illustration of Lothiriel with one of the women of her household.
I am working on another piece and should have it up soon. I’ve been working a bit slower today, as the season change is kicking me a bit.
As always this illustration is up on my redbubble page, so you can buy prints and merchandise. If there is any piece you like that I’ve forgotten to put up, please let me know and I’ll update it. Every little bit really helps right now.
