The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes
RING: Eric King x fem!reader
Tumblr media
Summary: The Colonel isn't wearing his ring anymore - she wants to know why.
Notes: English isn't my first language. I apologize for any mistake I made while I wrote this short story.
This story has been in my drafts since December, because for some reason I couldn't find the motivation to finish it. Now it's finally done, and it's my gift to all the people out there who still think about Eric King and House of Ashes - like I do.
Warnings: nothing, just pure fluff
•••
She didn't know when the sudden change happened - not for sure. The only thing she noticed was that last week Eric King was still wearing his wedding ring on a necklace around his neck, but this week it wasn't there. It was missing. No necklace, no ring.
If she wanted to be honest curiousity was slowly eating her away, but she didn't dare to ask the reason for this change. She wanted to and she knew she could calmly ask, because Eric wasn't a man driven by anger. It was just the timing... There wasn't a single moment this week when she could make some small talk with the man and then ask the reason for the missing jewellery.
After Caelus' success came the fuss around the briefing what was about to take place in Camp Slayer a former palace in Iraq. And of course the success made the man happier than ever - and he deserved to be happy, because he was working on the software for years. Therefore it really wasn't the right moment to go and snoop around. The briefing on the other hand made him nervous, but after he made sure she'll be the one to accompany him to Iraq, he seemed to calm down a bit.
Her relationship with the Colonel was not the kind others would expect from the two of them. Their friendship was too close and unprofessional from time to time to be fully accepted - and the military men and women seemed to think she was just trying to climb up higher through the Colonel. So because of that they were professional whenever others were around, but when they were able to get a few minutes for themselves they were happy to call the other by their first name and talk about whatever they wanted to.
When the day to go to Camp Slayer came, they were alone in Eric's office to get everything they'll need. There was still half an hour left until departure so they were looking around the room calmly, not wanting to leave anything important behind.
Now that she was alone with the man she couldn't keep her curiousity to herself. Her palm was itching to know the truth and her throat felt dry as she kept herself back from talking.
"You don't wear your ring anymore." the sentence came out of her mouth before she could stop herself.
"I'm sorry?" Eric asked as he turned around to look at her.
"I'm sorry if it's too personal, but- I noticed that you don't wear the necklace with the- you know, ring on it." she tried to avoid his gaze, but he made sure she looked at him as he walked towards her.
"Yes, I thought it was time to get rid of it."
She looked him in the eye with confusion on her face. "But why?"
"You know about my relationship with Rachel. You know how it is and how rocky it has become." he explained. "I thought it was about time to really put an end to it."
She looked up at him to examine his features, but the attempt was unsuccessful. She completely froze and her mind was trying to answer the question why - why now? -, so she was unable to process what she was seeing.
Did they talk about it? Did he find someone else?
Her heart slightly ached at the thought. He didn't say anything about meeting someone or getting close to someone. They were friends, weren't they? He would have told her, right?
"I see." she said after a while not daring to ask around more, afraid that she'll get an answer what will hurt her deeply.
"I didn't think you'd notice."
"Why wouldn't I?" she asked with a confused expression. "I know you well."
"Yeah, you do."
The silence sat in again and she put a few important documents in Eric's briefcase. As she rearranged the remaining papers on his desk, she noticed that he didn't get back to work.
"Are we ready to go?" she asked and looked up at him again.
"I think we'll get a divorce. Rachel and I." he started, finding his strength to get everything he wanted to say off of his chest.
"Right, that explains the ring I guess."
"Not exactly. I think I found someone who helped me get through Rachel and the accident and-"
"Oh." she looked away from him, doing her best to process what he was saying.
He found someone else. Someone he didn't tell her about. Someone she didn't know. For a moment she had to think about what hurt more: that he found a love interest or that he didn't tell her about it?
Eric has always been her anchor and she was sure he felt the same about her. Even when things got hard to get through, they still had the other to lighten the mood or to say something funny (or in his case - nerdy) what made the sadness in the air disappear. They were great together - great friends, great soldiers... So why can't he be honest with her?
"Well, I'm happy you found someone Colonel."
"- and I was wondering if you'd like to go on a date with me after we come back from the briefing and after we solve everything with Rachel."
Now that was something new and unexpected.
She blinked a few times, trying to process what he just said. Dating? They'll go on a date? They think about the other as something more?
She thought about all the times they spent together, about all the times her friends teased her about the Colonel - maybe they do have something more than pure friendship.
"A date?" she asked and a smiled formed on her face.
She was about to continue, but there was a knock on the door.
"Colonel? Are you ready to go? The chopper is here."
"I'll be out in a moment. Thank you."
Getting back to reality was harsh. She didn't want to go, she wanted to continue this conversation, she wanted to quickly finish the briefing so they can finally go out on that date.
"We should go." Eric said, his voice full of disappointment.
She didn't like how he sounded. She didn't like how his smile disappeared and how his shoulders seemed tense.
"I'd love to." she said quickly. "I'd love to go out on that date- if it's okay..."
"After the briefing?" he asked, not letting her finish what her inner insecurities wanted her to say.
"Sure, after the briefing. And after you and Rachel sorted things out."
Before leaving the room, Eric gently put his hands on her shoulders and pressed a kiss to her forehead. It was careful and unsure, but it was a great promise.
A promise she hoped he won't break.

༝ ˚ ༝ My Lady is the Sea 。 ˚ ༝ - Prince Eric x Fem!Reader | NSFW
Tumblr media
𖠳 ᐝ warnings: brief smut, 18+ (minors dni), unprotected sex & cursing
Sea salt tickles your nostrils as you step out onto the wooden dock. Nose twitching like a bunny to rid the salty air from your sensitive nerves. You glide forward only a few feet, and your left shin knocks into a wooden pole. A barricade lined the perimeter of the landing. Fencing that stops you from falling into the unknown below. An oil lantern illuminates a portion of the dock and the gradually darkening surface of the deep. The expansive waters lurk just beyond the fading arc of light. Your body gently sways with the sounds of the waves stirring.
Instinctively, you flex your hold on a roped handle. A heavy, disgusting mixture of beer and spit sloshes in the bucket that you have been entrusted to dump out. Polluting the ocean, you think. An unfortunately common attribute of living in a coastal town. It's second nature to dump and forget. Water appears to be along every horizon you look to. It surrounds you, yet it's ever-moving. Continuous. Traveling away.
How you wish you could be out there now. Just like your father had moons ago. Oh, the precious things he gifted you with when he returned to the marina! The carefully selected treasures. He always seemed to know which new object would earn an excited squeal from you because of its sparkles or funky shape. Whispers at bedtime of now fictitious-sounding tales on how he acquired them. To you, his trips were like storybooks. Too embarrassing to admit, you used to go to sleep late into your teens with visions of exploration dancing in your head. Dreaming of the uncharted waters and cloudy faces of the friends you'd make. He'd promise to you, that you would soon be old enough to explore the world with him.
But you couldn't truly treasure the last retelling of his adventures because no one foresaw he would leave it on a cliffhanger. He never came back. Your mother forbade you from speaking of his expeditions as time passed. "Don't go towards the beyond." "This is your home." "You're safe here." she chided. Here, on land. The hope soon ended with the stories. You grew accustomed to the familiar. You were raised here. It's all you have known. Is it worth it to leave at this point?
However, there are instances when you fall back into childlike wonder. In the quiet lulls, similar to the brink of falling asleep, you can't help but contemplate what else the waters hold past their horizons.
༝ ˚ 。⋆ 𓇼 ⋆。 ˚ ༝
A faint, muffled tune begins inside and wafts out into the silence. The merry-sounding song envelops you. You blink out of the reverie to adjust your vision in the darkness.
You can hear the pub's piano, in desperate need of a tuning, as you push open the door. A gaggle of men are singing a sea shanty in the dining space. They look disheveled but have dancing smiles. You can't help grinning as you watch these men celebrate life.
“Just docked," Gwen, your co-worker, calls from over her shoulder. She fills up two cups and then slides them over the bar top towards one of the waiting men. He slaps a few coins down and moves back to the crowd, like rejoining a school of fish.
Gwen wipes up the liquid he left, “I heard one of them holler that they came in from the Carribean.”
“I feel like that's only the third ship from around there this season."
"How do you manage to even keep track? There have to have been hundreds of vessels that have passed through here."
You blushingly shrug at her knowing smirk. Teasingly, her fingers reach out to flick at your slightly tarnished necklace. A chain made from Spanish silver with a locket bearing some type of ruby gem.
Leonardo was the one who had graced you with this last year. He was a buccaneer. He and his crew docked in town for a fortnight. He was charming and proud. In the tavern, he was always drunkenly boasting about the treasures he had found. The people he'd fought. The Lords he'd impressed. The people he'd fucked. He was so fun.
When your birthday happened around the time he was in town, he came stumbling into the bar with this necklace. He said it was nothing and that he had dozens of more valuable findings in a chest on board his ship. But he never showed you to prove that to be true. However, you did thank him ever so graciously that night.
He sailed out a day later. No harbor was his home. You're used to this life working as a bartender in a popular trading port. You see hundreds of thousands of faces. All of these handsome men ranged from sailors to buccaneers. They all share with you the amazing stories of their lives. They fascinated you. Inspired you. Seduced you. - You can't help but be attracted to the rugged, good-looking, and ambitious type.
A man unexpectedly calls out from the crowd towards the pair of you. His voice grabs your attention like a Siren's song. There were too many bodies to place where it was coming from in the mass of people, but you swear you briefly saw a hand in the air on the left side of the room.
“My lovely bar maidens, a round of your finest ale, please, yeah?"
“Right away, sir,” you nod curtly while pivoting obediently to fill the dregs.
༝ ˚ 。⋆ 𓇼 ⋆。 ˚ ༝
The rosy-cheeked, rowdy men cheer even louder as you approach with their fifth round of booze. Their attention has been won, not by the promise of refreshments, but by the beer sloshing over the rims and onto the pair of bouncing breasts carrying it all.
Low whistles scatter around the table at your cleavage while you lean over to set down the ale. Mucky hands grabbing for the foaming tankards. You catch a handsome man staring through the limbs. He gives you a dimpled smirk. His eyes betray him as they glimpse down to what you can assume is your chest. Well, he's no better than any man.
Your retreating form hears the same voice from before exclaim, “Here is to another voyage through uncharted waters! I am grateful for all your hard work, boys. And thanks to Grimsby for laying off the scolding because we're three days past schedule."
You're back at the bar. A crewmate, with a red kerchief pushing back his straw-yellow hair, heaves an overfilled mug in the air toward the handsome man,
"And a special thanks to our Captain, whose mother would keel over from learning the adventures her dear boy has taken us on. Prince Eric!"
"Prince Eric," they unanimously cheer!
Together, as they collide their drinks, fat drops of the golden liquid splash onto Prince Eric's tunic and wet his chest. The strings of his shirt are untied. Making the neck loosely hang open with his chest hair on full display. Your eyes are drawn to it. Tracing the outline of his defined pecs through the thin fabric. You're no better than a man. Worst yet, he notices you staring. His stare seems to darken, and he motions his mug towards you as a 'cheers' gesture before returning focus to his companions.
Clearing your throat and dirty mind, you turn back to tend to one of your regulars, a local fisherman slumped over on a stool at the end of the bar.
༝ ˚ 。⋆ 𓇼 ⋆。 ˚ ༝
Eric strides over as you scrub up the beer rings on the bar, left by the patrons who previously occupied the empty stools. He fluidly pulls one out to sit and drums his fingers along the wood. Blue eyes staring you down for a third time tonight,
"Can I get you anything?”
“I think I should take a breather. My crew is too enthusiastic to get me drunk.”
“Sounds like you're having a bad night." He threw back his head and let out a loud laugh. Admittedly, it was too big of a reaction to that poor joke attempt. You wring out your rag into a nearby bucket to hide your smile.
You wait for a beat before sparing him another glimpse. He’s staring at your chest again. You feel the exposed skin warm under his look. You’re tempted to peek down to see how much this corset is causing you to spill out.
“Did you get it locally?
“Sorry?”
"The necklace," he half-gestures towards you.
You clasp at the pendant, "Oh, this."
He nods with his eyes fixed on your chest a moment longer before moving up to your face. His cheeks are flushed and eyes hooded, assumedly, from the pints he and his crew have slung back. You're moving toward him, holding out the chain to let him get a closer look.
“I think it’s from the Spanish Islands. A pirate passing through last season gave it to me.”
His large hand reaches out to replace yours. “It’s beautiful. I have an eye for treasures like this.”
He's so close like this. You watch his eyes flick around the locket, his fingers tracing over the gems, and the way his dark curls fall as he tilts his head to examine.
“Silly me to think anything else. Here I thought you were just checking out my chest.”
“Well, you do have wonderful tits," he absentmindedly states. He leaves you gaping as he pulls back.
"Thank you for letting me have a look. I'd be rather fond of that if I were you. That's a special gift."
"Y-yeah, but given to me by a not-so-special guy," you shrug.
You sense an awkward pause, but he watches you with a soft, dimpled smile. You motion towards the window out to the harbor, “Which one is yours?”
“The biggest one. Naturally.”
You stifle your giggle and notice a boat at the end of the port. Beautiful and massive.
“Wow, you weren't kidding. What's it like up there?"
"On the boat? You work in a marina. Have you ever been on one?”
“Oddly, no.”
He didn't hide his shock.
“I'm sorry. Are you telling me that summer lover could give you a necklace but decided not to show you his deck?”
“Something like that," you lean onto the bar, "How unfortunate for me, right?"
His hand strikes the top of the bar as he rises from the stool, causing you to flinch.
“Well, that simply just won't do! Do you want to come see mine?"
The lamplight and mischievousness dance in his eyes, "I can give you the grand tour.”
“Will you let me spin the wheel?”
"Only the most skilled helmsmen are allowed to touch," he pouts, then that damned smile graces his lips again, "but I think I may be able to bend the rules for you."
“I’m going on break,” you call to Gwen before following the handsome voyager outside.
༝ ˚ 。⋆ 𓇼 ⋆。 ˚ ༝
"And, this would be the Captain's quarters."
"Oh, Captain Eric?"
He sheepishly rubs at the back of his neck, "I don't particularly like going by titles. Makes me feel like I'm trying to say I'm more important than others. I swear by my men. We venture out for fun, but I'd be stuck at port without them."
"That is a very noble thing to say, Prince Eric."
"Come off it," he laughs while moving over to a table against one of the walls. Eric picks up what appears to be a rock. He turns the object in his hands before showing you.
"Fossilized sea stone. Found it off the coast of my home island."
He places the textured stone in your open palms. The unexpected weight of it doubles you over, but Eric catches you. His hand lingers on your hip.
He proceeds to tell you about the rest of his findings laid out on the surface. You love the way his face lit up. Making himself exhilarated with his own stories. You listen intently and let yourself live vicariously through his retellings.
༝ ˚ 。⋆ 𓇼 ⋆。 ˚ ༝
Eric locks an ornate chest up as you watch. Sitting on the table now cleared of his glories. “So, are you considered a sailor, explorer, or just a guy with a boat and a lot of time on his hands?”
Eric laughs, "The last one, for sure. Once I turned nineteen, my mother allowed me to venture out and sail with the crew. I've always loved the idea of discovering something new on my voyages. Whether it be places, possessions, or people."
He's moving into your space, "I am happy to have met you, Y/N."
"And I, you, Prince Eric."
"No titles here." He leans in with a hint of a grin in his whisper, "I forbid it."
"Oh, that sounds like a command, and I shall obey, Your Majesty."
He chuffs as you see his eyes drop to your necklace again. His fingers dance along the silver chain before exploring further and grazing over the top of your chest. He makes sure to peek up at you for some sort of permission. Silently, you put your hand over his own to guide him to grab a handful of your breast. Eric takes the cue and squeezes while closing the gap between you with a kiss that immediately heats up. Hands knead your breasts over your camisole-corset top.
"And here I thought you've been admiring my necklace all night. I feel scandalized," you tease while he kisses your neck.
"No, no, it is beautiful! But, these," His calloused hands give a reassuring squeeze, "are really lovely."
Hands quickly work to pull down your blouse to expose your tits. Eric rolls a nipple between his forefinger and thumb. Gasping, you arch up into his touch. Legs instinctively spread wider to allow him in. You feel his dick twitch the moment he presses closer.
A moan growls in the back of his throat as he rolls his hips. Grinding his hard-on into your wetting core while you kiss. Your skin grows hot, his breaths come heavy, and the heat is building between your legs.
Eric put his mouth to your breast, sucking at your skin in obscene, open-mouthed kisses. Eliciting a low keening sound from you. He withdrew just enough to lave at your nipple, back and forth, over and over, until your pussy thrummed to the same beat.
"Is it very unprincely of me to tell you that I would very much like to fuck you right here, now, in my chambers?"
"You are but a man, my Prince."
༝ ˚ 。⋆ 𓇼 ⋆。 ˚ ༝
Your body was thrown across the desk. You don’t know where to put your hands, so they grip and scrape at the wooden surface while Eric fucks into you.
He has a firm hold on your naked waist. Keeping your long skirt hiked up to your stomach so he could watch himself penetrate you. He has a brutally harsh pace going. The delicious feel of the drag and pull of his cock.
Eric braces himself on the desk. A toned arm flexes next to your head. His face is now closer to yours as he changes the angle of his hips. With the newfound support, you feel him speed up his thrusting. He groans into your chest. Playfully biting a nipple before kissing up to your neck. His movements were enough to bring you dangerously close to reaching your high in only a few minutes.
"Oh, Prince Eric," you whine.
"Fuck." His hips stutter. "What's my name?"
"Captain Eric. Eric. Eric. "
A wave of bliss hits you and you screw your eyes shut. It doesn’t take long before both of you reach your orgasms. You hold onto Eric's biceps with all your might, as you scream his name. No doubt loud enough for everyone in the tavern to hear.
༝ ˚ 。⋆ 𓇼 ⋆。 ˚ ༝
At dawn, you're re-dressed and carefully creeping over the creaky floorboards. Trying not to wake any of the still-drunk crewmates who had found their way back onto the ship.
Catching your eye, the silver locket, sat on the once-empty desk, glints in the daybreak. Eric's back rises and falls. The rest of his bare body is covered by the messy bedsheets. Blissfully oblivious of your exit.
You let that sleeping form be your final image of the handsome Prince and disembark the Royal ship.

A/n: There is a trigger warning for this chapter. The reader talks about a call she worked. It sucks but this is actually based on a true story. A previous coworker of mine was an EMT and responded to a call like this. EMTs are heroes guys! ❤️

Groaning and throwing your head back in frustration, you felt tears prick your eyes. You were ready to leave. You didn't want to wait. Ariel grimaced, but stayed quiet. She seemed at a loss for words. You weren't directing your anger at her. You knew it wasn't her fault. You'd just had a hell of a day, and your bed was practically calling your name.
You stood there, leaning against the counter with your arms crossed, observing cars exiting the parking lot. You wished you could be doing the same. You huffed a breath.
"Everything alright, (Y/N)?"
Jonah's voice snapped you out of your daze. You turned to see him in a black hoodie and grey sweatpants with his gym bag over his shoulder. You gulped and nodded. You were able to grab your envelope from Ariel now, and Jonah followed you out the double doors.
He got right to the point.
"Whose blood is that?"
You looked down at your shirt.
"Don't worry, it's not mine. We had a bad call today. It was a kid," you cleared your throat as tears welled up.
"Are you okay, (Y/N)?"
You started to nod your head, staring at the ground, but you shook it instead.
"No. It was hard. The kid hit his head. There was so much blood. He was pronounced dead at the scene," you choked out before the tears spilled over.
You halted your steps and brought your hands to your eyes. You didn't want Jonah to see you cry. The immense stress and pressure from the last week at work, topped off with the events of today, was enough to break the dam.
You sobbed for a moment before you felt strong arms encapsulate you. Jonah pulled you into his chest, settling his chin on your head. He let you sob for a few minutes while he stayed silent. When you started to quiet down, he began gently rubbing your back.
"I know that it's easy for me to say that it's okay, (Y/N), even though you know it's not. Unfortunately, there are things we just can't control. You did your best, and that's what matters. You've had a rough week. I mean, you were just assaulted yourself last weekend. I know it's hard, but you're incredible. You're great at your job, and you better other people's lives. It's okay to sulk and let your feelings out, but when you're done with that, remember to focus on all the good that you do."
Sniffling and leaning into Jonah's chest, you listened to his kind words. You didn't want to leave his embrace. It felt so comfortable, and almost familiar. Reluctantly pushing yourself back, you pulled some tissue out of your bag to wipe your nose. Great, you were a blubbering mess in front of one of the hottest guys you'd ever seen. Jonah let you clean yourself up, using your arm to guide you the few feet ahead to your car. He ducked his head down to level his eyes with yours.
"Do you feel a little better?"
You nodded.
"Yes. Thank you for saying that Jonah. It means a lot. I love what I do, but it takes a toll. Kind of like what you do, I guess," you laughed.
Jonah shrugged.
"Getting pummeled is easier than that any day," he admitted.
"At least your work actually means something."
You looked up at his kind blue eyes.
"You inspire people. That means something."
Jonah chuckled.
"Yeah, well, I don't know about all that."
"Then why do you do it?"
Jonah looked from side to side at your question, like he was seeing who all was around.
"I don't usually tell people up here," he scrubbed the back of his neck.
"Why not?"
"Because," he sighed.
"I don't want them to pity me or look at me like I'm some charity case," he shoved his hands into his hoodie.
You took a step toward him, delicately placing your hand on his jacket sleeve.
"It's okay, you can tell me," you whispered.
Jonah huffed a breath and crossed his arms over his chest. The move almost looked defensive to you as you withdrew your hand.
"My mom's sick. Her treatments and medication are very expensive. Her health insurance recently dropped her because of it. So I do fights here on the weekends, and overtime at my regular job to scrounge up some extra money."
You nodded, holding his gaze.
"I'm sorry. I know that must be hard."
Jonah shook his head and looked down.
"Don't do that. Don't pity me."
Your hand found his arm again and you urged him to look at you. His blue orbs reluctantly pulled back up to yours.
"I don't pity you. I'm showing you the same kindness you showed me. I lost my father when I was young. It's not easy, and some people don't understand that kind of pain, but death is a natural part of life. As much as we hate it, and as unfair as it can be. You're putting in the effort while your mom's still here, and that means more to her than you know. Most people don't care until it's too late."
Jonah loosened his arms, and let his mouth fall open. He approached you, stepping you back until you were against your car.
"God. There's something about you, (Y/N)," he reached his hand up to tuck a strand of your hair behind your ear.
"I can't put my finger on it. You're just different."
His eyes landed on your lips, and you licked them nervously.
"So are you. I don't think you fit into the stereotypical cage fighter persona."
Jonah smiled, the motion drawing your gaze. He paused for a moment, like he was making a decision. Reaching past you, he opened up your car door.
"Go home and get some rest, (Y/N). You've earned it."
You blinked back up at Jonah, and smiled back at him.
"Thanks. I'll see you next weekend," you said as you swooped under Jonah's arm to throw your bag in your car, and climb in.
⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘
For the next month, you were a little too excited to return to the arena every weekend. You told yourself that it was because you were becoming more familiar with the place and making friends; but in the back of your mind, you knew that was bullshit.
Every Saturday night, you waited at the front desk for Jonah to walk you to your car. You learned that his regular job was at a fitness center where he was an Exercise Physiologist. Jonah grew up watching fighting on tv with his father, before he up and left Jonah and his mother. He didn't seem too beat up about that. Jonah naturally gravitated towards fighting as a form of stress relief in high school, and eventually got to the level he's at now.
Jonah asked about your hobbies and interests. You told him that you liked art, movies, and concerts, but that you rarely had the time or energy for any of those anymore. Jonah said you should still try to make time for them.
Each Saturday night, you wanted to kiss Jonah. You thought that maybe he wanted to kiss you, too. But each Saturday night, he pulled away. He hadn't initiated anymore physical touch like he did the night you broke down. Perhaps he just knew you really needed it then. You could understand that, but you were still left disappointed all the same.
Was Jonah seeing someone that he wasn't telling you about?
Were you not his type?
Had you misinterpreted his kindness?
Did he think you were too emotional?
All of these questions bounced around in your head when he turned away from you every Saturday night. Driving home to quickly shower, and laying down in your bed, you stared at your ceiling. What was it about this guy? You hadn't been this hung up on a man since you finished college. You'd been too busy focusing on your career. Why, all of a sudden, did you want to make sure to look pretty on Saturdays? Groaning and throwing your arm over your eyes, you willed yourself to sleep.
⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘
The next Saturday night, you stood at the desk waiting for Jonah to come to walk you out. Tapping your fingers in no particular pattern, you were visibly nervous.
"Hey (Y/N), you ready?"
You turned to face Jonah.
"Oh, it's okay. You don't have to walk me every time. I know you probably want to get home, so I asked Seb to tonight."
You reached into your bag, and pulled out a pamphlet.
"Here, I got this from my hospital to give to you. You should look into it," you pressed your lips into a thin line, and avoided eye contact.
You saw Seb at that exact moment, so you slid past Jonah to join him at his side.
"Bye Ariel, see you next weekend," you waved before exiting with Seb.
The walk to your car was quiet. When you reached it, you turned to thank Seb, and climbed in. You had just started your car when a rap on your window almost gave you a heart attack. Pressing your hand to your chest, you rolled it down, and turned to see who the hell startled you. You were met with Jonah's serious expression.
"What was that?"
You pinched your brow.
"What was what?"
Jonah sighed.
"Why did you want Seb to walk you instead of me?"
Your grip on your steering wheel loosened, and you started to fidget, getting nervous.
"I didn't want him to. I just don't want you to feel obligated to do it every time," you shrugged.
"Is that it?"
You hesitated.
"What do you mean?"
"Is that the only reason?"
You nodded.
"Yes. Well, I mean, yes."
Jonah didn't look convinced.
"Did I do something wrong?"
Your eyes widened.
"No," you waved your hands.
"No, you definitely didn't do anything wrong. It's just that, when you walk me to my car, I like talking to you. I like being around you. I know that you're doing it to be nice, and that it doesn't mean anything. I just don't want to let myself get the wrong idea, if that makes sense," you grimaced, darting your eyes away from his piercing ones.
"Like what?"
Your eyes involuntarily snapped back to him at that.
He reiterated his question.
"You don't want to let yourself get the wrong idea, like what?"
You gulped.
"Like the idea that you might like being around me, too, I guess."

𓆩♡𓆪 CHARACTER - Tobias Eaton (Four) x Fem! Dauntless Born! Reader
𓆩♡𓆪 TYPE - smut, fluff
𓆩♡𓆪 WORD COUNT - 2K
𓆩♡𓆪 SUMMARY - You and Four had been together since he chose Dauntless, especially because you were one of the Dauntless born pulled into training. You both had never put a label on your relationship because it never seemed right, but everyone knew that you both were a couple, except the newest tributes you both were training, no matter how obvious you both made it. It seems you both have to make it a little more obvious.
𓆩♡𓆪 STORY WARNINGS - so sorry I was writing this during a final and it might suck I’m sorry 😭 || cursing || unprotected sex || creampie || oral || fingering
Tumblr media
You were used to wandering eyes, you really were, your partner was literally the hottest man in Dauntless. It didn’t really matter about wandering eyes though when they knew you both were together, label or not, but it seemed to be difficult to get through the mind of one of the new initiates.
You weren’t born Abnegation like either of them, you were a bitch and you made sure everyone knew it. You were a lovable bitch though, that’s why you were being fucked every night by the hottest man in all of the factions.
It passed through your mind to just show her, get Four to tell her something is going on in a certain area just to pull him there to fuck you. You passed it through Tori just to make sure, and she said no though, so you decided not to go through with it.
Maybe that’s why you were watching Four fix Tris’ position because she wouldn’t stick with it when Eric did it. It made your skin crawl, staring at the two of them. Maybe it did feel right that he was with someone from his home faction, didn’t he like selfless people? You were selfless in your own way, right? He knew that.
“Hey, you okay?” Uriah asks you, a smile quickly making its way to your face.
“Oh, yeah. Yeah, I’m okay, thank you. I’m going to go see how some of the kids are doing, you mind telling Four?” You start collecting your stuff, inhaling deeply as Uriah follows you.
“He’s coming over here.”
You shoot up as Four stands in front of you, his brow raised. “Where are you going?”
“I’m going to go do my time at the school,” you say, smiling slightly. “I just… haven’t seen King in a while.”
Four sighs. “Well… I can go with you in a minute, okay? King likes me, right?”
You laugh, slowly lifting your arms to wrap your arms around his neck before pausing. Public displays of affection were never really your thing, but you really wanted to.
Four saw you pause, leaning down to wrap his arms around your waist as you smiled and wrapped yours around his neck. “Everyone likes you, Four,” you teased, giggling. “But I love you.”
He smiles back, leaning down for a soft kiss as you tugged on his hair. “I love you too.”
You pulled his hands closer to your form, pulling his face into your neck as you looked over his shoulder just enough to wink at Tris before pulling away. “Let’s go see King.”
He nods, letting you lead him out of the training area and to the school. Dauntless didn’t teach like Erudite did, but they made sure that the children of the faction learned things needed to survive in the faction. King was a child of two Dauntless soldiers who had died exploring beyond the wall, and as a result, you both took him in sort of like your own.
Seeing you with a child really made Four want to give you a child, especially with how good you were with kids, but it never really seemed to be the right time.
That was until he saw you twirling another boy in your eyes, King cleaning one of Four’s guns while the older man oiled up one of the other ones. The younger boy was named Chris, someone whose parents got caught up in a mission and you both took him home just for a while.
“She looks good with a baby, right?” King asks, smiling. “Y/N was always good with kids. She was good with me,” he mumbles now, smiling. “I’m doing well in my training. She said that.”
“You are,” Four said with a smile. “You’re doing really well. Ranked third, kid, you’re doing good,” he leaned forward and ruffled his hair with a laugh. “Want you to get that first spot, though.”
King grins. “I will.”
Someone knocks making you fix Chris on your hip, quickly walking toward the door as Four stands. “Stay there,” he orders to King as you open the door, raising a brow when you see Tris. “Who is it?”
“Uhm… can I help you?”
She inhaled. “I just… I’m here to see Four.”
“Four, honey!” You yell out, the tall man coming behind you and settling a hand on your hip. “One of the trainees wants to speak with you.”
Four raised a brow. “Everything alright?”
Oh, the Abnegation was coming out.
“Y-Yeah, everything’s fine-”
“Perfect,” Four smiles, taking Chris from your arms and setting him on the ground. “King, come here!”
The older boy quickly walks over, standing just like Four. “Yeah?”
“Why don’t you take Chris down to eat? Tris will join you both,” Four says making King’s nose scrunch. “What?”
“Don’t forget I sleep here too.” King takes Chris’ hand, looking back just a bit. “Don’t forget I have a bed! That’s my bed!”
“Bye, King!” You laughed as Four grinned, closing the door as his other hand held your waist.
You couldn’t stop smiling, giggling as you stared up at him. “You did that, didn’t you?”
His smile grows, just a bit. “Yeah, I did. Uriah kind of… hinted it to me.”
You hummed. “Good, because I would've done something worse,” you said, slowly stepping back and pushing your hands into his tight black shirt. “I was this close.”
“Oh yeah? What did you have in mind?” He asked, smiling as the back of your knees bumps against the bed. His rough hands slip under your shirt, rubbing against your back as though he could feel the black ink you had gotten tattooed.
“Was gonna make her catch us fucking in the corridor,” you giggled as Four slipped off your shirt, humming as he leaned down. “Who said we always have to fuck on the bed? You like that idea?”
He nodded into your shoulder, lips pressing soft kisses to your skin as you started to lean back, his hands securely catching you before you could fall back fully. Carefully, he sets you down, his mouth pressing hot kisses to your neck down your chest. “I fucking love that idea,” he mumbled, his hand slowly rubbing circles against your thigh. “You want to go do that now?”
It was a tempting offer, but you shake your head. “No,” you say, tugging on the hem of his shirt. “You already got me here. Why move?”
He smiled even wider, leaning down as his hands moved to your hips to slowly tug at the tactile pants you wore. “I was thinking,” he whispers as you pull him down to press kisses to his neck. You could see the black peeking out from his shirt, pulling it off of him easily as he pulled away just to slip it off before pulling off your own. “You looked good with Chris on your hip.”
You paused, looking up at him. “You think so?”
He nodded, his hands tugging at your sports bra as your hands dragged down his back. He kneels over your body, pressing kisses down your neck to your chest. “I know so. You’re a natural with kids, angel, you’re fucking perfect.”
The slight husk in his voice made a shiver run up your back, your stomach twisting and heat flooding into your underwear as he lets his hot mouth suck at your lower stomach. “D-Does that mean something?”
He smiled, looking up at you. “Did I just get a Dauntless-born to stutter?”
You blushed madly, looking away. “Don’t let it get to your head, Four.”
He laughs, pressing a kiss to your pelvic bone before he slowly starts to pull your underwear off, his fingers dancing along your thighs as you squirmed, gasping as he pressed a firm kiss to your clit. It makes you squirm, his fingers replacing his lips as he kisses lower and lower.
“F-Fuck,” you whimper as the tip of his fingers slowly prod against your cunt, his mouth sucking and licking around his fingers as your hands push into his hair. “F-Four, you’re being too nice.”
He laughs, pulling away just for a minute as he slowly pushes a thick finger into you, watching as your hips buck into the air and your back arches. “Maybe it’s the Abnegation?”
You shook your head, reaching a hand down to push his fingers deeper into your pussy. It makes you whine, a gasp coming from your lips as he pulls them out just for a second to add another finger. “Abnegation is selfless, my darling, maybe it’s the Amity? J-Just, don’t stop.”
He laughs, popping a kiss to your cunt before pushing his fingers deeper into you, watching as you squirmed. Moans fall from your lips as he pressed firm circles against your clit, the sensitive bud making you whine loudly, hips bucking.
His fingers curl inside of you, pushing his tongue into you with his fingers as you tug on his hair and your other hand finds his cheek.
You felt your stomach twisting, hips bucking uncontrollably as you attempted to ride his fingers. You gasped as his fingers curled inside of you, attempting to find that one soft spot inside of you that made your eyes roll back. It didn’t take him long to find, especially because he’s memorized your body over the years and he groaned as you clenched around him.
“Come on honey, cum for me. Want to watch you cum.”
Your eyes rolled back, whimpering as he pushed his fingers knuckle deep into you to watch your pussy flutter. Your stomach twists, loud groaning falling from your lips as your stomach twists. Your hips buck, eyes rolling back as he sucked on your cunt, swallowing loudly as he pulled out his fingers.
He pulled away, sitting up as he pulled down his pants just enough to pull out his cock, hissing as you raised your legs to wrap around his waist. He grunts as he slowly pushes into you, eyes rolling back as he leaned down to hold himself up with his elbows, pulling you in for a kiss. “Fucking hell, I want to see you with my kids so bad,” he groaned, gasping as you pulled him down for a kiss. “Want to see you pregnant over and over again.”
You whined, his hips moving quickly as the bed pounded into the wall, your nails dragging down his back. His cock rammed into your pussy, strong thrusts making your eyes roll back as he pressed his lips to your neck. “You want that honey? Want to be fucked, round and full with my kids?”
You nodded, whining loudly. “Yes! Yes, I do!”
He grunts loudly, slamming into you just to feel your pussy clench along his entire shaft, a broken moan leaving his lips as you cum again around him. “Fuck.”
“Fuck, fuck! Four!” You yelled out as he reaches down to rub firm circles into your clit, rutting his hips just a few more times as he came inside you for the first time without protection.
It was an odd feeling, but filling as he groaned loudly, your cunt continued to clench around him to milk him of everything he had. It was warm, and if you could feel sticky-ness inside of you, it would be this. You whimper as he starts to pull out, trying to reach forward to pull him back in before he grabs your legs, pushing them back so your knees were on your shoulders.
“You don’t think we’re done yet, do you? Gotta make sure this sticks.”

Poor Unfortunate Souls {Part 1/3 -> Part Of Your World}
Tumblr media
*All images found on Pinterest. Moodboard made by yours truly*
Dark! Ursula! Aemond x Fem! Eric! Reader x Ariel! Jacaerys
Warnings: Nothing in this chapter.. reader almost drowns but is saved. Daemon’s an asshole. *Divider from Firefly Graphics*
Synopsis: Jacaerys Velaryon, the reluctant heir to Atlantica. The moment he saw you, he knew he would never see someone who could capture him with their beauty again. You would haunt him eternally. In a desperate attempt to meet you, he turns to Aemond Targaryen, an outcast from the merfolk, to help him walk amongst the land dwellers. But when Aemond lays his eyes on you, he knows he has to have you. By any means necessary.
Part Two Jace's Ending Aemond's Ending
Tumblr media
Jacaerys Velaryon. The son of Queen Rhaenyra and the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantica, the home of the merfolk. An adventurous young merman, he was often found exploring sunken shipwrecks or the deepest sea caverns in search of treasures and trinkets…
Even when he was supposed to be attending his royal duties.
He couldn’t help it. He knew his mother wanted him to step up as her heir and become the prince he needed to be for his people, but he knew he wasn’t the prince they wanted. He wasn’t the prince they needed. He lacked the drive and ambition for ruling as king. He wasn’t interested in politics, or ruling over the merfolk.
In fact, he often felt conflicted between two worlds.
His home, the ocean, was where his family and his people were. And even though his four younger brothers and two sisters often drove him insane, he loved them dearly. And he loved his mother… his stepfather, Daemon, on the other hand, he barely even tolerated. He disliked how much of an influence he had over his mother, and how much power he held in the kingdom.
The other half of him, however, wished to be above the surface of the waves, where he could feel the full warmth of the sun, the softness of the sand on the shore and the cooling sea breeze…
He wanted to be where the people were.
Out of the water and living among them.
He knew it was outlawed to travel to the surface after his father, Harwin, was murdered by humans. He was incredibly young, barely over five years old, and his brothers Lucerys and Joffrey were too young to even remember, but that didn’t stop him from sneaking off to watch them from a distance. And besides, he was certain the kingdom was so against humans because Daemon seemed to loathe them, often spreading his rather false horror stories over humans and their prejudices against merfolk. There were even whispers of him trying to convince Rhaenyra to go to war with the surface world. Jacaerys disapproved of this, but knew his mother was wiser than that.
And while Jace certainly resented the humans who murdered his father, he knew not all humans were that cruel, just as not all merfolk were like Daemon. He still found himself greatly intrigued by the surface dwellers. Whether they were sailing on their great ships, or frolicking on the beach, or dancing… he wanted to try dancing…
But he knew he could never trade his tail for legs.
And so he spent his days exploring with his companion since birth, a fish with glittering olive green scales and bright orange fins called Vermax, eagerly taking any trinket or human object he could find at the bottom of the seabed or in a long abandoned shipwreck. He would take it to the surface to have it inspected by a seagull, Cannibal, before taking it to his secret grotto, a deep sea cavern where he stored his treasures.
He was often scolded by his mother for forgetting his duties, often arriving late or failing to show up at all sometimes, just like earlier in the week, when he failed to show up to a royal concert when he and Vermax had an unfortunate encounter with a shark while exploring a shipwreck. He had completely forgotten about the concert, going to Cannibal about the two interesting objects he’d found to add to his collection. When he had returned to rather sheepishly apologise to his mother, he had both her and Daemon lecturing him over duty and his careless and reckless behaviour whenever he opened his mouth to try.
It had even gotten to the point where Rhaenyra was now sending Syrax, her golden crab companion, to watch him and make sure he wasn’t getting into trouble, reporting back to her over whether he’d been to the surface. Jace had visited the surface world far less frequently as a result, only managing to do so when he out swam the crustacean. It wouldn’t surprise him if she sent his younger brother Lucerys or his uncle Aegon after him next. Or, heaven forbid, one of his sisters.
It was after one such scolding that Jacaerys found himself at his grotto, admiring his growing collection and daydreaming about being among the people on land. Being where he could walk, run, dance… where he could ask them the thousands of burning questions he had… where he could stay all day in the sun.
Where he could be part of their world.
He smiled to himself at the thought of walking on two legs, but found that fading into a disappointing frown as he looked down to see his tale, scales glittering scarlet and ebony in the fading sunlight.
Everyone assumed he had everything anyone could ever need in life. But he didn’t. He felt torn, ad though he didn’t belong under the ocean, but above the surface.
He wanted more than this.
He let out a soft exhale of disappointment, allowing himself to float down to the bottom of the cavern and landing on a slab of rock jutting out from the stone floor.
“I just wish to be part of that world, Vermax. Up there. All these treasures I have… they’re neat. And it seems as though I have everything… but it’s not enough. I want to live among them. I have everything I could ever need, and yet I want more…” He murmured, too caught up in his own thoughts to notice the stone entrance to his grotto sliding open.
A low whistle of mild impressment did, however, catch his attention, followed by a amused voice.
“Mother’s going to kill you.”
Lucerys was leaning against the closed entrance to the grotto, his arms crossed. Both Velaryon boys were rather similar, with dark curls and deep brown eyes. But Lucerys’ hair was shorter, and a slightly darker brown, and he had more black scales than Jacaerys, whose tail was mostly red, like their mother.
Jacaerys shot up, his cheeks slightly flushed. “Luke-“
“What is all of this stuff?” Luke asked, looking around the grotto rather amusedly.
“It’s… it’s just my… collection…”
“Impressive. I always wondered what you were doing when you constantly snuck away,” He mused. “But like I said, if mother finds out about this, you’re dead. She’s worried about you, always obsessing over the surface world and neglecting your duties...”
Jace rolled his eyes at his younger brother. Above him he heard a distant booming noise. Glancing up through the hole in the cavern roof where the surface of the water was visible, he saw a thousand colours light up the sky in a flurry of sparks and fizzing. He ignored his brother’s continued chattering, transfixed on whatever was happening in the world above.
“I told her that you were either crazy, or this is a just phase…”
“What do you suppose…?” Jacaerys muttered to himself, ignoring his brother’s teasing antics and swimming up to where the noise and bright flashing colours were coming from.
“But I didn’t realise you were this obsessed- where are you going? Jace! You can’t go up there! Humans are trouble! Mother said so!” Luke called after his brother, but he was already gone, Vermax hurrying after him. Luke glanced over at where Syrax was perched on a nearby ledge.
“So… should you follow him or should I?” He asked.
Syrax, realising Luke didn’t want to be the one to do so, hopped off the ledge and hurried after the older prince, who had now reached the water’s surface.
Jace gazed up in sheer awe at the great ship sailing towards him, the illuminating the night sky in a flurry of sparks in the most vibrant shades of scarlet, blue, emerald and gold. The sails billowed in the ocean winds, the largest of which was imprinted with what Jace could only assume was a royal sigil.
As Jace moved to get closer to the ship, he let out a yelp, feeling a sharp a pinch on his arm, Looking down to the culprit, he flicked Syrax off him and rubbed his arm, the skin slightly reddened from where the crab pinched him.
Diving back beneath the waves to move closer to the ship, Vermax hot on his tail. When he reached the great vessel, Jacaerys hoisted himself up and managed to climb up the side of the ship. He knew it was a risky move. If he was caught by the sailors, he would be captured or even killed. If was caught by his mother or Daemon… it might be even worse. But his curiosity had gotten the better of him.
He kept hidden in the shadows, peering through a gap on the side of the boat. There was cheering, dancing, drinking and singing, a celebration of sorts, and it somewhat relieved Jace that the sailors were probably too occupied with the festivities to notice him.
A sweet melody filled Jace’s ears as the sailors danced. A flute, he believed, was playing. He remembered reading about them in an old book he’d recovered from a shipwreck. He’d always imagined how their tune sounded, and he wasn’t disappointed.
He wasn’t sure what was being celebrated, but it seemed to be a most joyous occasion. Everyone seemed in the highest of moods and the most joyful of spirits. It was wonderful to see this side of the surface dwellers, and he couldn’t look away.
In fact, he was so entranced by the humans that he found himself jumping back in shock as a rather strange and hairy creature, a dog he believed came bounding over to him. He had read about them but had never seen them in person before, but it seemed friendly enough, sniffing him with interest and wagging its tail.
Jace smiled, rather tentatively reaching out to the animal, only to shrink back into the shadows as a female voice called out to the creature.
“Max! Here boy!”
Jace cautiously peered back around, his eyes widening as he laid eyes on who might possibly be the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen.
You.
He watched as Max eagerly bounded over to you, jumping up to lick your face in greeting. You laughed, gently pushing the dog away from you slightly and patting his head.
“Down boy. Good boy. C’mon what’s got you so excited?” You smiled, looking over in Jace’s direction and causing him to duck back into the darkness again. His cheeks were flushed pink, his mouth slightly agape. He knew if Luke were here, he would never hear the end of it. But after having seen numerous paintings and drawings of human women in books he’d found, as well as meeting with countless potential matches organised by his mother, be found that none of them, even the most notoriously beautiful mermaids, compared to you.
He found himself peering back around to admire you once again as you sat down with Max, rubbing the dog’s stomach and watching the ongoing celebrations. You were dressed rather simply in a white linen shirt with the top two buttons undone and a pair of blue breeches, a pair of black knee high leather boots on your feet. Your hair was down and loose, fluttering in the nightly see breeze.
You were absolutely beautiful.
A sudden loud screech to Jace’s side caused him to reluctantly tear his gaze away from you, sending the culprit a nasty glare.
“Quiet, Cannibal.” He hissed, not wanting to draw attention to his hiding place. Cannibal edged closer to Jace, seemingly wanting to see what- or who- had caught the young prince’s attention. When the bird laid eyes on you, he let out an even louder screech that sounded a little like a squawk of amusement, only to have Jace grab him by the beak to shut him up.
“I said quiet.” He shot the gull another glare before returning his focus to you. “I’ve never seen a human up this close before.” He breathed as he watched you play a small, cheerful melody on a flute, the flute he must have been hearing earlier, Max running around in circles around you as you twirled around, the both of you almost dancing together to the tune.
“She… she’s very beautiful…” He murmured, shooting yet another glare to the bird as he let out a slight muffled wheeze through his closed beak. Jace followed Cannibal’s gaze to where Max continued to dance around you. “No, not that thing.” He muttered, using the hand wrapped around Cannibal’s beak to move the bird’s head upwards to look at you. “The human.”
“Silence! Silence!” A man suddenly announced, his arms outstretched as he stood in the centre of the deck. “It is now my deepest honour and privilege to present our esteemed Princess Y/N with her birthday gift.”
“Y/N…” Jacaerys murmured dreamily, watching you step forward with a chorus of cheers from the crowd onboard. “Princess Y/N…”
The man stepped to the side to present a large object concealed by sapphire blue cloth and tied with a scarlet ribbon. “Happy birthday, Y/N.” He smiled, and with one tug on the ribbon, the cloth fell to reveal… a statue of you.
You were dressed in an extravagant gown, your arm raised in the air, your gleaming sword pointed towards the sky. Your expression was not warm as it was in reality, but one of hardened steel.
It was a warrior’s statue.
Jace tilted his head, his brows furrowing. The statue captured your beauty, that much was certain, but there was something missing from it. Maybe it was lacking your smile that sent a swarm of butterflies to erupt in his stomach, or the sparkle in your eyes. Whatever it was… it made the statue seem… unlike you.
“Wow… Grimsby you shouldn’t have.” Your voice sounded rather exasperated. “It’s… truly something to behold.”
Jace smiled. He could tell you were struggling to muster a compliment, but didn’t want to seem ungrateful.
“You like it?”
“It’s… really something…” You muttered, staring up at the statue, your lips pressed into a thin line and your eyes crinkled at the edges as you winced slightly, looking physically in pain at the sight of the gift. “Although it seems rather-“
“I commissioned it myself,” Grimsby declared rather proudly, his hand placed over his heart and making you immediately close your mouth. “Although… I had hoped it would be a wedding gift…”
“Oh don’t start, Grimsby,” You groaned, turning away from him and leaning on the side of the boat, just above where Jacaerys was hiding. “Are you really still sore that I rejected the proposal from that Dornish prince?”
“It isn’t just me, Y/N,” Grimsby sighed, stepping forward. “Your parents, the entire kingdom wishes for you to happily settle down with the right man-“
“Exactly, Grimsby! I need to find the right man,” You argued, sitting down on the side of the ship with one hand holding the rigging of the boat to prevent yourself from falling. “I know he’s out there somewhere. But I don’t want to marry for duty. I’ve always devoted myself to that. I want to marry for love. I want to find someone who… who has the same ambitions as me. Who… wants to see the world and sees past the fact I’m a princess. Someone who understands what it’s like to yearn to be out there exploring the world. Someone who understands freedom, and who wants to break free… and who understands that a part of me belongs out there in that world. Out there in the seas.”
Jace’s expression brightened at your words, his heart fluttering in his chest at you possibly sharing similar struggles to him.
It was like you were too good to be true.
That could be him… he could be that man for you…
“I’ll find him one day. He’s out there somewhere I… I just haven’t found him yet.”
“Well, perhaps you haven’t been looking hard enough.”
“Not helpful, Grimsby.” You grumbled, rising to your feet and looking out at the ocean, as black as the clouds brewing overhead. “Believe me, when I find him, I’ll know. Without a doubt.” Your words were firm, your expression one of clear resolve. “When I see him, it’ll… it’ll just hit me like… like lightning!”
No sooner did those words leave your mouth, you and Jace looked up as the deep growl of thunder rumbled overhead, a flash of lightning lighting up the sky.
“Hurricane!” A sailor yelled. “Stand fast! Secure the rigging!”
You immediately sprung into action, leaning forward to pull on the ropes as the waves lapped against the ship more aggressively than before, the wind whipping through your hair and rain beginning to pelt down from the sky as though the heavens themself were opening.
Jace grabbed ahold of the ship, failing to grab Cannibal as the gull was blown away by the wind torrents with a loud screech of protest. While the others focused on untying the lifeboats, Jace watched as you leaped up the stairs two at a time to reach the steering wheel of the ship that was spinning out of control, trying to stop the ship from capsizing into the water. A large surge of water passed over the ship, drenching you completely and those onboard.
Despite gripping onto the ship as tightly as he could, Jace soon found himself falling back into the water, barrels, crates and even the sailors following him beneath the surface. He swam upwards as quick as his tail could move, breaking through the surface to see a jagged flash of lightning hit the main sail of the ship.
Flames blazed through your royal seal emblazoned on the sail, burning through the cloth and spreading to the mast of the ship.
Jace gasped as he saw the ship uncontrollably heading towards a cluster of jagged rocks jutting out from the sea, you still at the wheel struggling to gain control of the ship. He wanted to scream at you, to climb onto the boat and help you steer the ship to safety, or to just grab you and get you off the ship, but he knew he couldn’t. He watched with a horrified expression as the ship rammed against the rocks, throwing more sailors and cargo, including you and the statue, overboard and into the depths below. The mast snapped, falling forwards and spreading the fire to the rest of the ship.
Jacaerys swam forward to see you help Grimsby onto the lifeboat to join several other of your crew mates. He felt a small sigh of relief to see you safe as you hauled yourself into the small boat, but it the feeling was short lived as you frantically looked around the small cluster of life boats, your gaze ultimately returning to the raging inferno consuming the ship.
“Max!”
No, no, no, no.
You couldn’t go back.
Jace couldn’t watch you do that.
To risk your life and possibly lose it.
He followed you as you swam back to the burning ship, hauling yourself back onboard to save your beloved dog.
“Jump, Max! Come on, you can do it. Come on, boy, just jump!” You desperately cried out to the animal, unable to move further forward thanks to the flames and the collapsed mast.
Jace squinted, trying to see you through the billowing smoke, his breath caught in his throat. As he saw your silhouette emerge through the smoke, he released the breath he was holding, but it got caught in his throat as your foot suddenly fell through the deck and out of his sight.
Max fell off the boat and into the sea where he was pulled onto the lifeboat by the surviving sailors, who cried out to you as you desperately tried to free yourself from where your foot was stuck, the flames flickering higher and higher around you, the smoke filling your lungs and choking you from any oxygen.
You managed to loosen your foot enough to pull it out of your boot as the inferno raged on, but it proved feeble as a barrel of gunpowder rolled past you and into the flames. As soon as the ship exploded, Jacaerys surged forward to where the ship wreckage was sinking beneath the waves, frantically looking around for any sight of you, the flames providing enough light for him to see clearly. Upon seeing no sight of you, he rose back to the surface. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw you, unconscious, balanced on a plank of wood from the deck. No sooner did he see you, the violent waves caused you to slip from the plank and under the water.
As you sank deeper and deeper, Jacaerys swam after you, managing to grab ahold of you and heading in the direction of the shore. He made sure to keep your head above the water so you could hopefully breathe, not even caring whether you were dead or alive at that moment. He just needed to get you to safety.
His arms ache as he finally reached the shallows, struggling to drag both you and himself onto the beach. He cradled you in his arms, his chestnut eyes scanning your form for any sign of life. For any slight twitch, any movement, any breath. Yet your eyes remained closed, your skin pale and your mouth slightly agape.
“Is she… dead?” The word almost got caught in Jacaerys’ throat as he turned to where Cannibal landed beside them on rather shaky legs.
Please don’t be dead… please don’t be dead…
“She… she can’t be dead…” Jace murmured, a finger gently opening one of your eyes. Upon seeing them up close, he realised how beautiful your eyes were. Cannibal hopped between you and Jace, pressing his head against your foot, letting out a small, sorrowful caw.
“Wait… wait look! She’s breathing!” Jace exclaimed as you let out a small exhale, your chest beginning to gently rose and fell. He sent a small disapproving look to Cannibal. “You know that’s not where they breathe, right?” He muttered as Cannibal leaped the air and landed on a nearby rock.
Jace rolled his eyes, looking back to where your breaths were becoming less shallow and more even. “She’s so beautiful…” He whispered as he looked down at you. Your clothes were torn, and one of your boots was gone, your dripping wet hair plastered over your forehead. Jace reached over to gently brush it away from your face.
As his hand moved to gently caress your cheek, he found himself humming a small tune his mother used to sing to him at night. It was an old tune from generations long since passed, sung in an ancient language that was no longer spoken by merfolk other than the royal family, although Jace’s was a little rusty at best after missing so many lessons. It was a lullaby that always soothed him after a night terror when he was young.
His humming soon evolved into him softly singing the song, and a smile spread onto his face as he saw your eyelids flutter and open ever so slightly, your soft, small hand reaching up to place over his. When your hand made contact with his, Jace felt his heartbeat quicken, his skin feeling as though it were on fire from your touch.
A loud bark made him flinch back away from you, spotting Grimsby and Max on the horizon. He dived into the water as the dog bounded over to you, eagerly greeting you by slobbering on your face as you slowly sat up, one hand- the hand that touched Jace’s- resting on the side of your head as you groggily looked around.
“Y/N! Oh thank goodness,” Grimsby breathed in relief, his hand reaching into his pocket and taking out his slightly damp handkerchief, which he used to dab his clammy forehead. “You really delight in these sadistic strains on my blood pressure, don’t you?” He muttered, leaning down to help the princess to her feet. “Are you alright, my dear?”
“I… I saw… a boy. He… he rescued me…” You muttered, one hand still clutching your head as you regained your balance. “He was singing to me. He had the most beautiful voice…” You trailed off, swaying slightly.
”Oh, Y/N,” Grimsby sighed. “I think you’ve swallowed a bit too much seawater.”
“No, I saw him.” She protested, looking out at the shore. “I heard him.”
“Of course you did, my dear,” Grimsby sighed, wrapping an arm over the girl’s shoulders. “Come on. Off we go. Come along, Max- Max! What is that dog barking at now?”
“Max!” You called out, followed by a sharp whistle that got the dog’s attention from where he was barking in Jace’s direction, the prince hiding behind a rock.
As you, Grimsby and Max left the small beach and headed towards your castle, Jace watched you go, Cannibal perched on the rock in front him.
“I don’t know when, I don’t know how… but watch and you’ll see, someday I’ll be part of that world. I know I will be!” He declared to his feathered companion, a steely determination set in those deep brown eyes of his. “No matter what it takes.”
A short distance away, Jacaerys was being watched by an ancient beast. A large, bronze eel, one eye a glittering green and the other glowing a vibrant sapphire blue. She watched him silently for a moment before dipping beneath the surface to return to her master.
It was only a matter of time before the young prince sought him out.

“You summoned me, mother?”
Queen Rhaenyra smiled fondly at her second born son as perched regally on her throne, her golden trident, the source of her power passed down from her father, resting beside her.
“Yes, Lucerys. I wished to ask you about your brother.”
“J-Jacaerys?” Luke stammered.
“Yes. I tasked you with watching over him but you have yet to report back to me. Your sisters have noticed certain things…”
“O-oh?”
“Apparently he’s to himself, daydreaming even more than usual, not swimming to sunken shipwrecks looking for trouble… it’s almost as though something has consumed his mind completely.”
“Well… he seems normal to me mother.” Lucerys chuckled nervously, making Rhaenyra raise an eyebrow.
“Rhaena and Baela said he swam past them in very high spirits this morning, putting flowers in their hair and singing to himself.”
“Well… well I-“
“Lucerys, I know you’re keeping something from me, sweet one.”
“Ke-keeping something, mother? I would never.”
“Really? Because Rhaena and Baela told me something else rather interesting.”
“They… they did?”
“About Jacaerys… his mood. His high spirits and his daydreaming. It’s as though he’s come alive. I’ve seen the signs before, both in myself and others.”
“You… have seen what?” Luke visibly gulped as Rhaenyra beckoned him closer.
“Isn’t it obvious? Jacaerys is in love, is he not? Or at least infatuated?”
“I… I don’t know mother-“
“Come now, Luke. I understand that you and Jace are at that age where you don’t feel the need to tell me everything, but this is important…”
Luke felt face flush slightly. If Rhaenyra found out, she’d be furious. But what would be worse is if Jace got captured, or killed.
“Mother… I do not know-“
“I only wish to know who the lucky mermaid is…”
“Mother-“
“Or merman perhaps? He is rather good friends with Cregan of the Arctic waters, is he not?”
“I- I wouldn’t know, I-“
“Unless you simply do not wish to fulfil the task I have given you and have been neglecting your duty-“
“I tried to stop him mother!” Lucerys suddenly exclaimed, making Rhaenyra raise her eyebrows in slight surprise at her son’s outburst.
“Stop him? From what?” Rhaenyra’s expression changed from one of mild amusement to immediate concern.
“I tried to stop him from doing it but he never listens to me. Just because he’s older, he thinks he can swim to the surface even though I warned him about the humans-“
“Humans? What about humans?” Rhaenyra demanded, gripping her trident harshly and making Luke stop in his tracks.
“Hu-humans? Why mother, who said anything about humans?” He chuckled, glancing away from his mother.
“Luke…” Rhaenyra warned, rising from her throne. “What has your brother been doing? Tell me. Now.”
“I… I don’t know what happened mother. He saw these flames in the sky and he followed them to the surface. I tried to stop him, I promise I did. When he returned the next morning he was a completely different person. Happier. And yet somehow more annoying-“
“Luke…”
“Anyway,” Lucerys cleared his throat. “I asked him what happened and… and…”
“And what? And what, Luke?”
“He said he’d saved… a human…” Lucerys muttered. “A princess.”
“He saved a human? Those murderous savages.” A voice spoke from the shadows.
Lucerys felt his heart sink as he realised he’d failed to notice Daemon’s presence, too focused on trying to protect his brother’s secret from their mother.
“I…” For once, Lucerys had found himself at a loss for words.
“I think that’s everything we need Lucerys… you may leave.” Daemon ordered, but Lucerys stood his ground.
“No. I want to know what you’ll do-“
“Luke, go to your chambers.”
“But, mother-“
“Lucerys. Go.” The sternness of Rhaenyra’s words and the fire within her eyes made Lucerys reluctantly comply, swimming off with his heart sinking at what he’d done.
“Humans? Love? He’s going to get himself killed.” Rhaenyra sighed, looking over at her husband. “What do you suggest I do?”
“The only way we can save Jacaerys is if we rid him of these absurd thoughts. We need to act quickly.”
“I do not want to push him away more than I already have.” Rhaenyra said as Daemon swam over to her, resting a hand on her shoulder.
“If we don’t act now, you’ll lose him to the surface. You of all people know what they do to our kind. He’s your heir, Rhaenyra. Your first born son. To protect him, we may need to hurt him.”
“But, Daemon-“
“Do you want him to resort to extreme solutions like your brother did? Do you want him to suffer that same fate as Aemond? Or turn to him for a solution?”
“Jacaerys isn’t like Aemond in any way. He is not cruel, or cunning like him. He would never seek him out. He knows better.”
“For now.” Daemon replied. “But love can cloud and deceive the mind in ways that can make the greatest of men fall.”

“Vermax, what’s going on?” Jace asked as the small fish attempted to herd him in the direction of the grotto. Jace rolled the stone away, moving forward to enter, but his companion stopped him in his tracks, swimming right up go his face and turning, flicking his tail into Jace’s eyes.
“Ouch! Vermax,” Jace rubbed his eyes, wincing slightly at the small sting. “Okay, it’s that important of a surprise.” He sighed, complying with Vermax’s wishes. “If you wanted me to close my eyes you could just ask nicely.” He muttered, feeling himself being gently nudged slowly into the grotto, his arms held out in front of him in case Vermax decided to steer him into a wall. Again.
Jace had been in his grotto so many times he knew where he was when Vermax moved in front of him again, this time flicking him on the hand to stop him in his tracks.
“Really? Again?” Jace sighed. “At least it was more gentle that time.” He muttered. Vermax nudged his hand, and Jace opened his eyes, letting out a small gasp at the sight in front of him.
There, placed in the centre of his grotto, the new centrepiece of his treasure collection… was your statue. He turned to the small fish, a wide smile growing on his face.
“You’re the best, Vermax,” He grinned, swimming over to the statue. “It’s perfect. How… how did you find this- how did you get this in here?” He asked. “Nevermind, I know I’ll never find out. Oh gods, it’s perfect- she’s perfect. It looks just like her- well, her eyes have more sparkle in real life, and they’re kinder too…”
He swam circles around the statue, analysing every angle. “It really is a work of art,” He murmured, a hand reaching up again to rest on the statue’s stone cold cheek. “If only it were real. Then we could run away from all our troubles… and find a place where we can belong. Don’t you think that would be the best thing, Verm-“ As he turned to address his closest friend, he was instead greeted by the face of his mother. A face that was half concealed by shadows and that was twisted in both sorrow and fury.
“M-mother. I can explain-“
“I think everything is quite clear to me, Jacaerys,” Rhaenyra interrupted, swimming out of the shadows, golden trident glinting in the fading light. Jace felt himself wince at the harshness of her tone when she spoke his full name.
“I consider myself a reasonable mermaid. A reasonable queen. And a reasonable mother,” She continued, her voice although soft in volume, was also cold in time. “I set certain rules to protect my people. To protect you. And I expect those rules to be followed.”
”But, mother, it’s not what you thi-“
“Is it true you rescued a human from drowning?” She demanded. Jace felt his mouth dry up. She knew? Luke… or Syrax, somehow?
“I… I had to. She… she would have died…”
“Contact between the human and mer worlds is strictly forbidden. You know this, everyone knows this. And I thought you of all people should understand this.”
“She would have died mother!”
“And that would only be one less human to worry about,” Daemon spoke up, emerging from the shadows behind Rhaenyra.
“You don’t even know her!” Jace protested, placing himself in front of your statue, as though he was protecting you.
“Know her?” Daemon let out a mocking laugh. “We don’t need to know her.” He snarled. “Humans, they’re all the same. Spineless, savage, harpoon, fish- eaters who are incapable of any feeling-”
“I love her.” Jacaerys blurted out, stopping Daemon in his tracks and making Rhaenyra’s expression morph into one of horror.
“No…” She breathed. “No, Jacaerys it… it cannot be true… have… have you lost your senses completely? You haven’t even met her! She’s human.”
“And you’re a merman.” Daemon sneered.
“I don’t care.” Jace retorted defiantly. “I’ll find a way.”
“Jacaerys, so help me, please do not escalate this.” Rhaenyra warned.
“Escalate it? What can you do mother? I’m not a child anymore!”
“We clearly aren’t getting through to him,” Daemon said. “You know what you have to do, Rhaenyra.”
“W-what’s he talking about, mother?” Jace asked, backing up so he was blocking the statue completely, a weary edge to his tone.
“I need to get through to you Jace,” Rhaenyra’s voice was solemn. “And if this is the only way…” She looked away from her son, raising her arm so the trident was pointing to an upper shelf of the grotto. “…So be it.”
“Mother, don’t!” Jace exclaimed, the realisation finally dawning on him. But it was too late. The trident was now glowing with lightning and flames, casting the grotto in a harsh orange light. Beams shot from the trident, perfectly landing on their targets.
His entire book collection? Gone.
His paintings, his jewellery collection, his candlesticks and compass? Reduced to dust.
Everything, from his gadgets and gizmos to his whozits and whatzits, were completely destroyed.
“Mother, mother please stop,” Jacaerys pleaded, desperately grabbing onto Rhaenyra’s arm, his eyes glassed over with tears threatening to spill at any moment.
But he wasn’t going to give Daemon the satisfaction of letting them fall.
“Mother- mother no, please no!” He yelled, following her gaze to where she aimed the trident at your statue, reducing it to rubble mere seconds later.
Jace let go of his mother, letting himself float to the grotto floor in front of where your statue was standing so proudly moments ago.
Rhaenyra, tore her gaze away from her eldest son, quickly swimming away from the irreparable damage she’d caused, both to herself and Jace. She too didn’t want to let the cracks show. Daemon stayed where he was, admiring the destruction of the treasures created by the beings he despised so.
“If you truly loved the humans, Jacaerys, if you truly wanted to be where you belong, you should go to them,” He said coldly, cruelly. “Because you certainly don’t belong here.”
As Daemon swam from the grotto, followed by his companion, a blood red moray eel called Caraxes, Jace finally let the tears spill, his chest heaving with the sobs that racked through his body.
“Jace…”
“Go away.”
“Jace, I’m sorry-“
“Sorry? Sorry that she destroyed everything?” Jace exclaimed, turning to glare at his younger brother. “Look what she did Luke. Look what Daemon made her do.” He turned away again as his voice cracked, another wave of realisation hitting him that his pride and joy, his wonderful collection that had taken him years to put together, was gone.
And your statue along with it.
“Jace, I didn’t know this was going to happen. I thought you might get in trouble and-“
“Just go away,” He whispered.
Luke hung his head low, reluctantly leaving his brother alone and joining Syrax, Vermax and Arrax, an infant ray who shimmered a pearl white, with the exception of his golden underside and eyes to match. Like Vermax, he was not yet fully grown.
“I don’t know what I’m going to do. I can’t leave him, and… I hate seeing him like this, annoying as he is. It’s all Daemon’s fault, that son of a-“ Lucerys’ ranting was cut off as Syrax pinched his lips between her claw. Before he could prize her off him, a large shadow loomed over the group, and the three sea creatures ushered the younger prince behind a rock, hiding him from sight.
It was an eel, but it was considerably larger than Caraxes, by two times at least. She looked more like some ancient sea serpent, for she was an ancient creature. Her bronze scales that once gleaned brightly had dulled with age, but her eyes still gleamed just as bright, as did the small clusters of blue and green streaked along the top and underside of her body. One eye was a vibrant green, like grass in the height of springtime. The other was an unnaturally vibrant blue, glowing brightly in the night like a sapphire.
Vhagar was surely an fearsome sight to behold.
Lucerys watched the beast slither into the grotto. He went to follow her, but Syrax stopped him by pinching his side.
“I can’t let him be eaten, can I?” He hissed, rubbing the reddened skin. “I have to do something!” He protested, but Syrax and Arrax blocked his path adamantly. Even Vermax was more focused on keeping the younger prince hidden than going to Jace, grabbing long stems of kelp and dropping them over Luke, who brushed them off him immediately.
“You have to let me help him? It’s just some old eel, right?”
Tumblr media
Jacaerys had wiped his eyes, but was still staring down at the rubble, not wanting to lift his head to be greeted with the sight of his former grotto, once a proud collection, now reduced to nothing. He didn’t want to cry again.
He let out a deep, shaking breath, trying to slow his hammering heart and calm the tremble in his hands. And yet every time he closed his eyes, all he saw was the princess he saved.
“Mijegindita riña… Mijegindita dōna riña…”[Poor child… poor sweet child…]
Jace’s head shot up to be greeted with the sight of Vhagar circling him like a constrictor about to suffocate it’s prey, her blue eye glowing violently in the darkness. He recognised the language as High Valyrian, the ancient language of merfolk. But he was far from a fluent speaker. In fact, he was rather terrible.
“I-I’m sorry I… I don’t fully understand…”
“It seems as though you have a very serious problem… if only there was something that could be done…”
The beast continued, this time in a modern tongue. Her voice was more of a deep, ancient rumble, coming from within. She didn’t move her mouth when she spoke, but Jace saw the glinting of those dagger like teeth. It was as though she were a vessel for someone else to speak to him. As though someone was speaking through her.
“Perhaps there is something that could be done for you…” Vhagar continued, circling closer and closer around Jace, turning her head towards him so he could clearly see her in the silvery glow of the moon above.
“I… I know you…” Jace breathed, and she retreated back into the inky murkiness of the shadows. “But that’s impossible… you… you and him… you were both banished… after what happened with- with Luke…”
He was only young when his uncle Aemond was banished, and Lucerys was too young to properly remember everything, but the memories still stuck with the elder prince vividly. He remembered the glint of the blade in the torchlight, he remembered Lucerys lunging at Aemond, and the young man’s screams wailing through the kingdom.
That was many years ago. Over a decade.
“Don’t be scared…” The voice spoke. “I represent the person who can help you. Someone who can make all your dreams come true…”
“I don’t think-“
“Just imagine-“ The voice cut him off, Vhagar’s head slithered past him, that piercing blue eye focused entirely on the prince. “You and your princess. Together, forever.” There was a slight mocking edge to the voice as it spoke, making Jace frown.
“No… no I can’t.” Jace faltered, knowing the offer, although tempting, was surely tainted with something far more sinister in return.
“Aemond has become incredibly powerful. He can use his power to help you...”
That stopped Jace in his tracks. He’d heard the rumours of his depraved uncle turning to dark magic in his exile. Some said he’d saught out the sea witch, Alys Rivers, who had mysteriously vanished months after his banishment.
“No I... I couldn’t possibly go to him. No. Get out of here! Leave me alone!” He exclaimed, lunging forwards and out of Vhagar’s reach to sit on one of his now empty ledges and facing away from the beast.
”Suit yourself,” The voice said as Vhagar retreated. “It was only a suggestion.” As she left, her tail flicked upwards, causing your statue’s face, still somehow intact unlike the rest of the statue, to land beside Jace. He reached over and picked it up, cradling it in his arms, Daemon’s words echoing over and over again in his mind.
“If you truly loved the humans, Jacaerys, if you truly wanted to be where you belong, you should go to them…”
“…Because you certainly don’t belong here.”
And for once, Jacaerys agreed with Daemon.
He was his mother’s heir, and yet he had no qualities of being a king. He wasn’t studious, or particularly charismatic in the eyes of the people. He did his royal duties when he remembered, but he had never aspired to be a king.
He remembered every little slip up, every time he’d been late to an event, every time he’d disappointed his mother and his siblings. Even little Viserys and Aegon could do a better job that he could. Even Luke with his mischievous ways, and young Joffrey, carried out their tasks to perfection. And his sisters, Baela and Rhaena were born to lead.
He wasn’t born for that.
He didn’t belong.
When he watched you on that ship, when he watched the people celebrate your birthday, and dance and sing and tell stories, he felt more at home. Like he could belong.
Daemon was right.
His mind was made up.
He was going to see Aemond.
“Wait!” He called out, and Vhagar’s face loomed into view once again.
“Take me to him.”
A/N: I know, I know, and I’m sorry to the Aemond girlies who are disappointed he didn’t show up. But I can promise you that he will be centre stage throughout most of Part Two

The whale stopped right outside where you’d met Hyunjin that morning, and you lamented leaving him. You knew you’d see him again, but leaving him this moment left you empty inside. People told you sirens give that effect, so you tried not thinking too much as you swam away from him. You forced yourself to focus on whether Minho and Han had any luck with their part of the investigation.
“More than enough luck!”
Han called as you and Chan arrived back at the station. He sat at his desk, leaning back with his feet on the top and a satisfied grin on his face. You gaped at his broken lip, and the black and yellow bruise on his temple. On his left hand, you saw a bandage wrapped around his palm, bloody in the middle.
“Jisung!” Chan gasped, moving over to check his bruises. “What the hell happened?”
“Got into a bar fight,” he shrugged, playing it cool. “It’s no big deal.”
Chan gingerly lifted his bandaged hand, “What happened to your hand?”
“Park Jinyoung, that’s what,” he grimaced when Chan turned his hand palm upwards. “He put a knife to me, and I had to get him off somehow.”
“With your hand?”
“It worked! I put a bullet in his leg, but it wasn’t enough to stop him. He still got away.”
That was when you saw them. A young man and woman sat in one of the holding cells, the enchanted purple bars keeping the woman from teleporting out. The young man had the wide, long ears and black eyes of a goblin, while the woman appeared human. The goblin noticed you first, his reaction not much different from other criminals who see you. He backed up into the wall attached to the bench, pushing back as if he might melt into the stone. His sudden jolt startled his companion, and she turned to see you as well. She didn’t back away, but her eyes did widen.
“Jennie and Eric, right?” you asked, walking past Han and Chan to the cell. Eric crouched into the corner, but Jennie kept her gaze on yours. “The mage and the accomplice.”
“So the squirrel wasn’t lying when he said they knew a demon bounty hunter,” Jennie drawled, seeing your exposed markings. “Plan on roasting us, demon?”
“Not right away,” you leaned against the side of the door, arms crossed. “I’m going to take a stab and guess the deputies already questioned you?”
“They tried,” she sniffed.
“We don’t know anything about Alcina!” Eric squeaked, eyes squeezed shut. “I swear, we don’t know anything about her! Not at all!”
“Eric!” Jennie hissed, kicking at him.
“Alcina, huh?” you let the name rest out in the air, “Where did you meet her?”
“I’m not talking, demon,” Jennie spat, arms crossed. “Save your breath. You’re going to need it when Jinyoung comes for me.”
“What makes you think he’s coming?”
“We’re his crewmates,” she shot at you. “He needs us. We need him.”
“Does he?” you raised an eyebrow, “He can pick up any pair of misfits off Cortuga and sail off without a second thought about either of you.”
“He’d never do that!” she said angrily, frustration bubbling inside her. “He…He isn’t that kind of captain…” she looked away from you, biting her trembling lower lip.
“Alright, sure. I honestly can’t wait for him to get here,” you then bent and whispered to her, “Then I can cook him alive myself.”
“Demon filth…” she grumbled through her teeth. “You’ll see soon enough. You’ll all see!”
“And I’m terrified,” you seethed.
You turned to see Minho back at his desk. He did not leave the fight unscathed. You caught the busted blood vessel in his right eye. It was most likely caused by whatever object left a cut underneath the eyelid and purple and black around his eye. Another cut on his left cheek told you his attacker got in close before he blasted them away. He placed a large book on his desk, and opened it.
“Alcina?” you walked over to him, grabbing a chair to sit on the other side. “Does that name ring a bell for you?”
“No, but I’m assuming its the person they’re working for,” Minho said, “Unless you two find something to contradict her?”
You told Minho everything you learned while Chan rewrapped Han’s injured hand. He froze up when you detailed Tytos’s condition, and mentioned The Creator.
“That’s not Brain Fog,” Minho said when you finished. “Brain Fog might make you forgetful and dazed, but it doesn’t debilitate you at the same time. You say he looked thin and frail. In what way?”
You thought about it, “In a deathly way. It was as if the curse was slowly killing him at the same time. He looked like he hadn’t eaten in days, his hair was brittle and thinning and his dry lips were cracked. Yet, when I mentioned his eldest son died, he seemed to break out of his delusion for a second before Mizu put him back under somehow.”
“How? Did you see what he did?”
“He touched the middle of his forehead,” you showed him the thumb motion Mizu had done, “And left behind some kind of black powder. Does that sound like any spell or curse you know? None of the ones I remember require that sort of touch.”
“There are a few,” he rolled his chair to the bookshelf a few feet from his desk and scanned the shelves, “Brain Fog doesn’t require any sort of physical touch. You said you’d seen this in the war?”
“Yes,” you watched him pick out one of the black leather books and came to the desk, “The mage who removed it used a stone. Yejin thinks it might’ve been a black tourmaline.”
“Yes!” he cheered reading the cover of the book, “Demonic Curses of the Dark Age! I knew I had it somewhere. I bought it at a sale in Newport. The warlock selling it says it was written by a real demon who was put to death for writing down their secrets!” He brought the book back to the desk, and opened it. “There’s a chapter in here somewhere,” he scanned the first page, “About manipulation curses. It has everything from elemental manipulation to molecular manipulation to zoological manipulation! I devoured this book in days! There’s so much!”
“Okay, Minho, that’s great,” you said, amused by his eagerness, “But does it have anything about mind manipulation?”
“It might…” he then asked, “You said the mage used a stone?”
“He did,” you nodded, “He said some sort of incantation while he did it, and the curse was gone.”
“Hmm…” he flipped another page, “Black tourmaline is a good stone for battling negative energy and psychic attacks. It’s regularly used for sapping out a curse.”
“What do you do after you have it in there?” asked Han, who winced when Chan closed the bandage.
“You usually melt or break the crystal,” Minho said. “A lot of fairies study alchemy so they can dispose of dark matter easier.”
“And I’m going to guess you’re one of those fairies?” he grinned humorously.
“I am,” he nodded. “We only need to find the right incantation.”
You shut your eyes as the day slowly broke down on you. “As fun as reading books late at night can be,” you yawned, slumping against the chair, “I think my brain is ready to shut off.”
“Not surprised,” he said, “Swimming around Hydrus will do that to you. You two get some rest. We won’t be finding our answer tonight.”
“You sure you want to walk to The Pearl like that?” asked Han when he saw you stand from your chair.
“Yes, why?” You then realized why Minho tried so hard not to look at you and why Han could not stop looking at you.
You’d gone into Hydrus in just your bra and pants.
“Oh, so Chan can walk around shirtless and nobody cares, but if I walk around with a bra on, it’s suddenly a problem?”
“Nobody said Chan can walk around shirtless,” Minho said, still focused on his book, “He just does it and we accept it.”
“You’ll get no complaints from me,” Han said breathlessly.
“Jisung,” Minho snapped, something similar to jealousy in his voice.
“Oh Minnie, you know I only have eyes for you,” he batted his lashes and blew a kiss.
“Ugh,” you groaned and made for the door, “It’s not a big deal. Wearing my shirt and jacket would have weighed me down. It’s not much different from swimming suits.”
Han stifled a laugh, “Which can be just as deadly on a woman like you.”
“Oh hush.”
“Men are the worst,” Jennie said from her cell.
“They are!”
You left the station without another word, walking out into town. Yes, you did get a lot of stares as you walked up to the White Pearl. Though, something told you it was your markings and not the lack of a shirt that caught stares. Honestly, you felt too tired to really care. Muscles aching from the constant swimming around in the ocean, you thought only about peeling off your damp clothes and crashing onto your bed. Moving through the crowded inn, you saw Felix singing up on stage. The pretty blond winked at you when you met his eyes, and you’ll admit you found him charming.
Not as charming as the bed waiting upstairs.

“I believe they are unto us, Creator. The mainlander lover and the old fool were alone with him.”
“Have they undone our work?”
“Of course not, but…one of my guards said his shark sensed somebody else in the room with us. I believe it was her half-breed son hiding in plain sight.”
“Then you must get rid of him. Our spell is almost complete. In a few days, King Tytos will die and the Seven Seas will be ours.”
“Of course, Creator. I will have my best men on it. We will kill that mainlander and whoever else stands in our way.”
The Creator remained silent in her orb, and Mizu sensed she was searching in “the beyond”. He noticed her gasp, and hesitated. “No…this cannot be. It must not be true.”
“Creator?”
“I see eternal fire within the waves,” she said. “I see…Oh, I can feel her powers now.”
“Whose powers, Creator?”
“The Vanquisher…The demon who slayed The Dark Lord…She is here…” her voice suddenly sharpened, “You must stop her! She cannot succeed!”
“The Vanquisher?”
“The Vanquisher!” she hissed. “The fire demon named Multak, who slew our master in Incheon and sent him into The Abyss! Our mortal enemy! She will foil our plans if we do not stop her!”
“What would you have me do?”
“Distract her. Keep her busy with your pirate friends while I work my magic. It appears we will have to speed up the process.”
“As you command, Creator.”

“How was your adventure under the sea?”
Changbin passed your breakfast plate to you on the bartop, and refilled your milk cup. You licked your lips at the steaming eggs, bacon, grits and biscuit on your plate.
“Great,” you answered, digging into the eggs right away. You hadn’t noticed your hunger until you’d woken up this morning with your stomach growling. The fluffy eggs melted in your mouth and you thought you’d melt with them, “Met a pretty siren, saw some fish, and got to ride a whale. Very eventful.”
“A siren, huh?” he asked with an impressed grin. “Did you get lucky?”
“Unfortunately not,” you frowned, thinking of handsome Hyunjin’s pretty mouth. “I was there on business, so there wasn’t much room for pleasure.”
“Shame,” he said. “When you came in here without a shirt, I was hoping to hear a wilder story than that.”
“Well, I did get to sneak into a palace, so it wasn’t totally uneventful.”
Changbin chortled, and you started telling him about your journey when a high cry broke through the morning crowd outside. You chased your food with the milk as you peered into the windows. People rushed down the dirt road, fear in their eyes and adrenaline pushing them forward. They ran into nearby buildings, calling to those inside, and shutting doors and windows tightly. Dread filled your bones, and you suddenly didn’t feel hungry. Changbin, however, knew exactly what was happening.
“Wooyoung!” he called into the kitchen, “Pirates!” He then reached under from the bar and retrieved a double sided axe. From the notches on the wooden handle, it’d been used plenty of times. “YN, either get your steel or go upstairs.”
“Pirates?”
You slowly stood from your stool, and went to the window. A group of children ran into the inn, going right behind the bar. You heard Changbin direct them into the kitchen, while he whistled for Honey. Their calls came from far away, but their taunts and laughter stuck in your ears. He sent them. Whether to scare you or kill you, Mizu sent these pirates to you. While a twinge of fear did hit you, Zunar’s words whispered in your ear.
“That’s the only time we can be brave, little flame.”
You went to grab your sword.
When you returned, Changbin and Wooyoung already ran outside. While most of the citizens of Levanter Bay hid, a select few met the invaders: Fred Pebbles with a large club and his men shooting from behind wagons and crates; Han and Minho standing atop a nearby building, taking shots with bullets and magic arrows; Changbin with his ax and bear companion: Wooyoung with twin daggers and swift kicks, and even Mayor Wallace with a heavy hammer. The smell of blood and battle hit your senses, fueling you for the fight as you went up to the porch railing.
One of Pebbles’s farmhands stood fighting a particularly nasty looking pirate goblin, so you jumped behind the goblin with a swift kick. Once on the ground, the farmhand slammed her hammer into their skull. Your eyes scanned the invading pirates, daring one of them to come at you. One of them finally did. A bearded man with gunpowder smeared over his eyes came at you with a hatchet raised in the air, and you moved to block it easily. Your hand burning bright, you shot a fireball right into his abdomen. He cried in pain, and you kicked him away to fend off another pirate who ran up to your side. A slash up their middle had them crashing to the floor, while you shot another fireball at the bearded pirate.
Effectively being burned alive sent the bearded back stumbling and running into a group of pirates, who moved out of his way. A woman’s cry caught you through the commotion, and you saw two men break into a boutique and start ransacking the place. You narrowed your eyes and rushed at them from behind. Levitating one into the ceiling and then slamming him to the floor, you swing your sword at his companion right as he reached for a small girl. He turned around, pain shooting up his back, to swipe a knife at you, which you returned with another fireball to his face. Your demon fire seared his skin, making him scream with pain.
“Get somewhere safe,” you told the women inside, “And barricade the door.” When they froze with fear, you said more firmly, “Go! Now!”
You stuck the screaming pirate with your blade, then kicked him off. When you stepped out the door, you waved your hand over the doorway where black clouds of smoke started embedding into the wood. The protection spell would keep any other pirates from breaking in. You’d stopped a pirate from attacking an elderly woman inside her stall when you saw him.
Chan’s merfolk genes appeared to make him faster and tougher than a normal human. You watched him throw punches, dodge kicks and hands with precision and speed. You saw the weapon in his hand: a long dagger with a bone handle. Fearless, daring, and strong, you couldn’t help admiring him as you easily cut down a reptilian pirate. It’d been when he cut through another pirate that a voice rang out through the fray.
“Where’s the demon called Multak?!”
A tall, tanned man with a small face and a square jaw came through the crowd. People around you gasped when they realized he held Mayor Wallace at gunpoint. You could tell the mayor put on a brave face even with a gun barrel in his stomach. A woman with copper skin and braided coarse hair ran out of a nearby shop, tears in her dark eyes.
“Gerald!” Mrs. Wallace, the school teacher, cried out. She tried going to him, but Fred kept her at a distance.
“I’m alright, Barbara,” he called out, not daring to look at her.
“Let him go, Park,” Chan said, the fight having stopped with the captain walking onto the scene. “He’s not a part of this.”
“He is,” the captain cackled, “He is until you hand me back my first mate and bring me the demon.”
“I can’t do that, Park,” Chan replied, “She’s headed for the capital. It’d be awkward if they came for her and she wasn’t here, you know?”
“Stop playing games, and give me Jennie, you half-breed.”
“Call me that again, pirate,” Chan let the last word hiss like a curse, “And you’ll get your first mate alright.”
You knew exactly how this would go if you didn’t step up. “You want me, pirate?” you stepped out from the crowd, putting yourself between Chan and Jinyoung. Removing your jacket, your markings began faintly glowing their red-orange colors. “Here I am.”
“You’re the demon?” he huffed. “I thought you’d be taller and more…manly.”
“I thought you’d be manlier too,” you shot back. “Mizu sent you for me, and here I am. Let the mayor go.”
“Bring me Jennie,” he demanded, “Then I’ll think about giving your wimpy mayor back.”
“Don’t make this harder than it needs to be, Park,” you said. “I’m already going to have a big day ahead of me, and I’d like to go back inside this inn and finish my breakfast at least. Wooyoung puts cream in the eggs? It makes them melt in your mouth.”
“Then you’ll have no problem handing over my Jennie.”
His Jennie? “I’m sorry, that’s not possible. You see, your first mate and her little goblin friend have information we need and, well, she just hasn’t given us what we want. We can give her back to you in between 365 to 730 business days.”
“I’m done fucking around, demon!” he shouted angrily. “Give me my Jennie!”
“Your Jennie, huh? Alright, I’ll go get her right now.”
You turned around, eyes following you as you marched into the station behind you. He wanted to play this game? Then you’d play it too. Walking over to the enchanted holding cell, Jennie stood confidently and smiling smugly.
“I told you he’d come for me, didn’t I?” she taunted, not scared by the anger flaring in your eyes. “He’s come for me and he’s going to burn your-Hey! Let go of me!”
Grabbing a fistful of her hair, you dragged the mage out of the cell, across the station, and outside. “You want her, huh?” you asked Jinyoung, keeping a firm grip on Jennie. “Here she is! Come and get her.”
“No, bring her here!”
You sneered, “Alright.”
“YN, what are you doing?” Chan whispered at you, but you ignored him.
Jennie’s feet stumbled as you guided her over to her lover. You spotted the satisfaction in Jinyoung’s eyes, and it enraged you further. You threw Jennie onto the ground beside him, then spoke.
“There she is,” you said, a growl in the back of your throat. “Let the mayor go.”
Jinyoung gave you a wicked grin. You had mere seconds. Reaching out to the gun on Mayor Wallace’s side, the heat from your hand immediately shocked Jinyoung’s body. A handprint similar to a branding covered his gun hand, which opened and dropped the gun to the floor. The mayor rushed to his wife nearby, but you kept your eyes on the pirate.
“Damnit!” he seethed, holding his shaking hand. The mark you left started steaming, burning the skin there further. “Damnit, damnit, dammit! You damn dirty demon!”
“Stop your howling,” you said. You grabbed him by a tuft of hair and growled, “I could’ve sent you to demons who’d do way worse than that.” You then asked, “Who is Alcina?”
“Who-o?”
“Alcina, the witch who cursed the king. Who is she?”
“Who?”
“‘Who, who, who’, are you a fucking owl?” You placed your hand on his shoulder, burning him once more. “Who is she? Tell me who she is or I’ll roast you alive!”
“I won’t tell you shit, demon!”
You touched him one more time, and you saw tears in his eyes. Jennie, who’d boasted about his love for her, did not move to protect or save her “lover”.
‘They know nothing of loyalty. They turn on each other the moment the world starts crumbling.’
Nor’goth may have a point there.
A gentle hand touched your arm, and Chan’s voice drowned out Nor’goth’s. “YN, don’t do this here. Everyone is watching.”
You suddenly became aware of everyone still in the square. He was right. Not here where children and soft-hearted folks could see. A flush of embarrassment and worry came over you when your fires faded.
“Let’s take them into the station, and question them there,” he said, slowly soothing the fires blazing inside your chest. “Not torture them. Question them.”
His soft hand touched the one holding Jinyoung up, and you released him. Han and Minho quickly collected both Jennie and Jinyoung. You turned to see the townspeople looking at you, fearful and shocked. They saw your glowing marks, your fiery hands, and saw the demon. A monster. At the end of the day, you are the monster they fear.
“Come on,” Chan said gently.
You swiped your jacket from the dirt and threw it over your shoulders. They’ll want you to leave after this. Nobody wants a demon in their town. It’s why you never stay. A lump formed in your throat, and you kept your head down as you followed Han and Minho into the station. You didn’t stop Han and Minho from putting Jinyoung and Jennie in another enchanted cell. Minho went to grab ointments from his desk while Han locked them up. You didn’t bother with the other two. They won’t tell you anything, but the goblin will.
“Nam!”
“Woah, woah, woah! Wait, wait-” Eric Nam ducked into the corner of the cell.
You lifted him by his shirt collar. His fear dripped out of every pore becoming a fuel for the fire in you. “Who is Alcina and where is she?”
“YN!” Chan called behind you. You ignored him.
“Who is she?!”
“She’s a witch we met in Cortuga!” he cried out, eyes shut tightly. “She said she’d make us rich if we helped her! She said all we had to do was kill a few mermaids and Jennie had to rile up some of the sea predators, and we’d be rich! I swear, that’s all I know! That’s all I know, please don’t burn me alive! Please!”
“I ain’t making promises,” you growled “Where is she?”
“I don’t know!” his voice cracked when you pushed him into a wall, “I swear, I don’t know! I don’t! We only met her once! That merman is who we communicated with!”
“Eric, you absolute coward!” Jennie called, brave now that she’s safe in another cell.
“Merman? You mean Mizu?” Chan asked from the cell door.
“Yes! Him!”
“Did he ever say where he meets Alcina?” he came up beside you. “Let him go, YN,” he said, hand on your wrist.
You hated how easily you let go of Eric. On the ground, Eric took a few shaky breaths before he spoke, “He never told us, but I followed him one time. He gave us the ability to breathe underwater, and after one of our meetings, Jinyoung asked me to tail him. Jinyoung never works with anyone without knowing things about them. We thought he might be going to meet someone to do a double cross, but then I…I saw her.”
“Alcina?”
“In a cave outside of Hydrus,” he said, “In a leviathan’s lair. I can conceal myself, so none of them noticed me.”
“What did you hear?”
“Them talking about cursing the king.”
“With what?”
“They said something about mind consumption? I don’t know what that means.”
You turned to Minho, who sat nearby listening as he treated a hand-cuffed Jinyoung. He nodded, “Yes, I’ve heard of it. It’s a mental curse that slowly consumes the mind until the afflicted body deteriorates. It explains why Tytos’s body is slowly shutting down. The brain is having trouble sending signals to the rest of him.”
“Would a stone treat that?”
“It would,” he said, wrapping the pirate’s burnt hand. “I know someone who could help us.”
“Who?”
“Our resident doctor and garden fairy, Yang Jeongin,” he said with a satisfied grin. “If anyone knows about healing crystals, it will be him.”
“You and YN can go talk to him,” Chan directed, “Han and I will watch over these three while we wait on the marshal.”
You hesitated to join Minho. Outside the windows, you saw the remaining pirates turning tail and running out of town by the docks. People coming out of the buildings convened together in the middle of the square, where they embraced loved ones. You then saw them start whispering. It might be about the pirates or about the demon who tortured one in front of them. Regardless, Minho guided you to the door.
“You won't get the reaction you're expecting,” he assured you.
You realized that once you stepped back outside. At first, people looked apprehensive until you heard a steady clap from nearby. This clap then started a wave, and you saw bright, proud faces.
“Thank you,” the boutique shopkeeper smiled, “Thank you for saving us! Those pirates were going to kidnap my little girl, but you showed them.”
“That goblin would've had my head if you didn't have my back!” Fred's farm hand clapped your shoulder, a toothy grin on her face, “Thank you!”
“Can you really set people on fire?!” Eunwoo, the moon elf boy from the inn, asked excitedly.
“Those pirates will think twice before messing with us again!” His friend said, swishing his stick like a sword.
“Boys, that's enough.” Barbara Wallace came up next, clutching her pearl necklace. She hesitated a moment, then said, “Thank you, YN, for saving my husband. Knowing him, he would've gotten himself killed if you didn’t step in.”
“How is he?”
“Just got a nasty bump from the fight. He's had worse injuries,” she sighed. “But, Eunwoo is right. Word will spread with time that Levanter Bay isn't as defenseless as it seems. It truly was a blessed day when you came into our town.”
“The sheriff, Han and myself were there too,” Minho pointed out, hands on hips.
“And you handled it gallantly as always,” she patted his shoulder as she walked past him to the children nearby.
Their collective reaction silenced you. “They aren't…scared?” you looked at Minho as you continued through the square.
“Did you want them to be?” asked Minho, amused.
“No, but that's usually the reaction I get whenever people see, you know, me.”
“The people around here aren't like that,”  Minho said. “It’s not as if you tortured an innocent person. He was a scumbag pirate who tried to tear down the town. You did us a favor by arresting him.”
“Most people tend to think that I take it too far…the intimidation part, I mean.”
“The people who think that are idiots,” Minho scoffed. “You’re a demon, YN. Demons swear oaths to protect innocent souls and punish wicked ones, don’t they?”
“We do.”
“And that’s what you were doing: protecting innocent people and punishing the wicked ones.” He then said, “Look, if it makes you feel better, I would’ve made him think he was covered in snakes or spiders or something awful to get him to talk.”
“Psh, mind games,” you snorted, “They’re worse than physical ones, if you ask me.”
“Chan isn’t a fan of them, but it gets the job done and that’s what matters to me.” He said, “The people here aren’t like the people in the cities. They’re wholesome and quaint. They’re…accepting and open. It has to be for so many different people to coexist in the same town.”
He wasn’t wrong. Levanter Bay, despite not having any real sun, definitely carried one of its own in the townspeople. More people thanked you and Minho as you walked down to the doctor’s office right beside the postman’s station. Above the door, someone wrote in black cursive letters: ‘Dr. Yang Jeongin, M.D.’ with a pair of fairy wings with a staff in between underneath. However, you didn’t stop at his office. Jeongin happened to already be outside, tending to a young man with a ghastly cut up his arm.
You briefly remembered Jeongin from your last case, the handsome garden fairy who wore a gray and white hanbok, the traditional attire of his people. His long, bright green wings looked so thin they could be glass. As you drew closer, you saw the white blossoms woven into his black hair like a crown. He’d been in the process of finishing a stitch when you and Minho approached.
“Hello, Minho,” Jeongin said without looking at him. “I’ll be with you in just a moment.”
Minho drew closer, crouching to survey the stitches on the man’s bloody arm. “Your stitching has gotten better.”
“My stitches were always fine. It was yours,” he cut the thread and tied it down, “That were crooked and too tight. Pass the gauze, please.” Minho handed him a roll of white gauze, and Jeongin began wrapping it. “What is this about, Deputy? I have a lot of people who need me.”
“We have someone who may need you more.”
“Who?”
“King Tytos.”
Jeongin stopped wrapping when he heard the name. He looked over his shoulder at Minho, “The Sea King? What’s happened to him?”
“He has mind consumption, Jeongin,” Minho said seriously. “It’s slowly killing him . The mermaid corpses on the beach, the predator attacks along the coast, and the pirates today? They all have to do with Tytos being ill. My friend and I discovered that a way we can combat it is by-”
“-Sapping it out of him,” Jeongin finished, taping off the gauze swiftly. “Mr. Song,” he went into his medical kit beside him, “Take two of these tonight, and swing by in the morning.”
He gave the injured man a packet, then stood up with his bag. “You need black tourmaline,” Jeongin said, turning back to his office, “Which is not easy to find in these parts.”
“Please tell us you happen to have one?” you asked hopefully.
“It just so happens I do. Come with me.”
He led you and Minho into his office across the road. Two young garden fairies stood inside, gathering supplies from shelves and putting them into baskets. “Kira, Koya,” Jeongin called to them, “See to the wounded outside. I have some business with Deputy Lee.”
“Yes, sir,” the twin fairies said together, bowing before leaving the room by their wings.
Jeongin put down his kit and walked to a workbench behind a curtain. “I’m sure you know by now that black tourmaline is used to defend against negative energy, correct?”
“Yes, we do.”
“And Minho should know that certain crystals,” you heard bottles clinking behind the curtain, “Can be used in rituals to remove said negative energies.”
“Obviously,” Minho said defensively. “I only need the incantation used to remove the consumption.”
You heard Jeongin rifle through his stores before coming back from behind the curtain. He held out a black pouch to Minho, “I really should go with you to assess his condition. We don't know how deep and how long the consumption has festered.”
“I estimate about a few weeks now?” You threw out there, “The corpses showed up two days ago, but a friend of ours says his illness has carried on long before that. He shows signs of severe dehydration, malnutrition, delusion, and memory loss.”
Jeongin listened intently, nodding and thinking to himself. “What color was his skin? His eyes?”
“Pale and paler.”
“Hair?”
“He had lots of patches and sores forming where his head rests. He doesn’t have much of it left either.”
“He shows all signs of severe consumption,” Minho told him. “I need the incantation, Jeongin.”
Jeongin walked over to a bookshelf, scanning the spines until he pulled one out. It appeared much older than some on the shelf, with flesh colored leather wrapped around it. Minho gasped upon seeing the strange book.
“What is a garden fairy doing with a dark remedy book?” Minho asked, touching the stitches keeping the cover together.
“It was a gift, if you must know,” he said airily. “I am a doctor, Minho, and doctors need to learn all kinds of arts if they're to treat anyone. Dark magic, as much as it pains me to say, has plenty of full proof remedies.” He smirked at Minho, “What? You don't have one?”
Minho glared, “I do happen to have one. All shadow fae have one. I'm only surprised a bubbly, goody-two-shoes like you would have one as well.”
“I'm not always good. You know that.”
He turned a few pages in the book until he came across a section for curses of the mind.
“Ah, here it is,” he said, putting glasses on the bridge of his nose. “‘Combined with a crystal of light energy or protection, hold it up to the area of first contact and repeat the mantra: ‘Replenish thy mind and embrace the light’ .”
“That's it?” Minho asked, unimpressed. “Just that?”
“Sometimes the treatment is simpler than you think.” He closed the book, “Find the infection site and hold it to him while you say the words. If the king is not as far gone as you believe, then he should be fine.”
“What if he is far gone?” You asked.
Jeongin thought for a moment, then said, “Help him remember things. Anything he may have an emotional attachment to, like a happy moment or a particular event in his life.”
You thought about the king’s reaction to you when you’d spoken as his daughter. Speaking about his dead son, hearing another acknowledge his death, broke the spell for a few seconds.
“Thank you, Jeongin,” Minho said, peeking into the pouch to see the black stones inside, “I'll bring these back so they can be disposed of properly. We don't want anyone using them.”
“I hope it works,” Jeongin said, replacing medical supplies in his bag, “Tytos is a good man, and his people will need him. I pray the Light is kind to him.”
You waited until you left the office to tell Minho, “We need to go now. If we keep putting it off, Tytos will slip too far for us to heal him.”
“Agreed. I'll tell Chan we're going ahead of him,” he dug into the dust pocket on his belt. “You've had a siren’s kiss, right?”
“I have,” you said, remembering Hyunjin’s soft lips.
“Good to know.” He tossed some dust into the air, and spoke into the floating particles. “Chan, we have the cure. We're going to Hydrus right away.” He blew into the dust, and it zoomed away through the crowds. “There's no time to waste. Come on.”

The ambience is omnious . .
Each step taken reverberates through the imperial walls of the castle, your home. The air is filled with the scent of candles, oak wood and old leather bound books, herbs and lavish silken fabrics. Ornamented in bronze and golden flowering, pillars reach up high, standing tall in the castle's halls. Every now and then, the sunlight gets caught in the shimmering metal, reflecting directly towards you, blinding and restricting your vision to the slightest.
Down the corridor, leading to the throne hall, you hear a man announcing the arrival of a person unbeknownst to you. "My king, Lord Trafalgar, the knight of heart seeks your presence!", the voice raspy and old, calls out to your father, Eric VanDoth the third, ruler of the Red line empires, who gleefully receives the arriving: "Ah, Trafalgar old friend! I am glad to see your safe return. How are matters in the north?"
Leaning against the massive door, opened to free the way to the throne, you listen to the familiar tone, chills running down your spine - how you despise him. "Your highness, I am inconsolable, the north is at it's worst state - I wasn't able to fullfil your bidding, for that I must humbly apologize."
The north - a place as cold as it's former king, so you were told. It was supposed to be ruled by this very man, kneeling before your father, lowering his head in reverance. Trafalgar Law, rightful heir of the now shattered kingdom of Flevance. To this day, he is nothing more than a wandering knight, known for his cunning and controlled fighting strategies.
"Tis a shame indeed. Do not fret, I am fully aware of your homeland's situation, so please, quiet down your concerns. Were your followers successful to cognise the countries suffering?", the king straightens, lifting himself off the throne and approaches Law, him still remained on one knee.
Nodding his head, he confirms and raises from the ground, properly facing his highness. "My scouts managed to discern my land's circumstances. It is a matter of a forced overtake from my father's bloodline.", he explains, low and audibly torn.
"My Lady?", a feeble voice tears you out of focus, an indication for you to stop your eavesdropping immedatiely. In a quick spin you turn around and your gaze falls upon a young woman, it is your chamber maid, bowing courteously. "Apologies my Lady, I do not mean to pry, but isn't it unheard of listening to the unknowing people's conversations?" - "Valeria, you scared me. But yes, it isn't exactly a very profound manner. I'll see to my father and the knight this instant."
Before you make your way to the halls, you glance over your shoulder with a soft smile: "Oh please, would you be so kind and prepare my outdoor garments and parasol? It is a beautiful day outside." Your chamber maid bows once more, her head low in respect: "Of course, Princess." - "Thank you, Valeria."
Thus you tread nearer to the two men speaking of reports and strategies to win over the north - it is then where you take a closer look at Trafalgar, the wandering knight. His armor is made out of white cold steel, the flourish ornaments on his chestplate formed into a curling heart, beginning from his sternum. The cloak swaying from his shoulders is as pitch black as his hair, white spots spread over the dark fabric here and there.
Hanging on his back appears to be the cloak's hood, it's rim sewed with fur of a white animal to protect from the cold at northern plains. To your notice, now that Law's gauntlets are off, you see letters punctured into his knuckles - saying: DEATH.
It leaves you appalled, come to think this is a highly regarded knight and the king's ambassador. Not to mention his sinister glare, freezing your blood. His face enframed by raven sideburns and a chin beard, only enhancing those storm grey eyes to your horrification. And the skin, as expected from a northerner - as pale as snow.
It is only a matter of time, until your father might consider to grade this shadow of a man as Commander of his garrison. How terrific . . purely to your misery, you already know it is bound to happen.
"What about the barriers, are there enough- ah my dearest (Y/n), Lord Trafalgar and I were merely discussing the current state of afairs in the Flevance kingdom.", the king greets you with open arms, as soon as he comes to realise your approach. All the same goes for Law, his demeanor stiff and haughty, yet still respectful.
"So I heard. Lord Trafalgar?", you give a deft curtsy to the knight, who turns to you and bows in return, greeting with a low 'your grace'. Mid movement, Law lifts his head, his stare meeting your deep e/c eyes, eliciting a skip of your heart in response. Absurd, you detest this man, so much so your skin bares in gooseflesh. Something about him tells you - he has seen and done things. Not to your kingdom's benevolence.
Your father continues: "Be that as it may, you are welcome to stay, friend. And I dearly hope you to consider my offer."
Offer? Did you overhear that part of their conversation, while talking to Valeria. Keeping your composure, standing straight, though the corsette wouldn't allow otherwise, you supress the urge to shoot a glare towards your dear father.
"You shall hear my answer the coming day, your highness.", Law reassures, saluting to the king as gesture of declaration. So the king brings his servant over to lead the knight to his chamber. "Silas will show you the way. You are free to join us at tonight's dinner, I'll look foward to more detailed matters of plans."
The tall man follows the compared to him dwarvish seeming servant, waving his thanks. To the rhythm of his metallic sabatons, the chainmail clinks against his armor with each and every step, letting your neck hair stand on end. The black cloak on his back sways from left to right from his fast paced walk.
As he vanishes, this is where your utmost worries unfold: "Father, I don't trust this man! He is dreary and cold, there is that sinister feeling about him." - "My sweet, calm down. I am aware you aren't fond of him, but he is in need of our assistance. I cannot decline an old friend's legacy. Please have faith, (Y/n)."
Exhaling deeply, you losen up and place your palm onto your father's shoulder, accepting his decision. "I truly hope you are right . . I will see you tonight." - "Yes dear.", and with those words you go ready yourself for a stroll in the castle gardens.
-_
Roses, tulips, violets . .
. . all flowers pool over the royal backyard like an ocean of colours and shapes. In midst stands a enormous fountain, adorned with a sculpture of your country's symbol, the bronze dove.
The sun's radiance warms you from within.
Sitting on an stone bench, adjoining the gravel path leading back to the castle, you flip through the pages of an newly received novel, reading "Deceitful Silhouettes".
It's prologue roils up emotions inside you, the letters weaving you in and reaching for your now alarmed instincts regarding the knight of the north.
Speaking of the devil. In the distance, Law saunters through the garden, his gaze hovering over the red and violet sea of flowers. He is headed your direction. Nervous, you stick your nose deep into the pages, not keen on meeting the king's ambassador one on one.
Although the golden orb in the sky grants you the needed warmth, the freezing cold coming from this human being deflects it without effort, to say the least.
"Your grace, still spell bound by mere black on white as always I see.", it's too late, he calls out to you, defining your weakness for literature. Peeking over the bound papers, you scoff: "I see you didn't change from the last time we met, Lord Trafalgar."
Quick to retort your remark, the tall man huffs a short 'perhaps', pulling aside the cloak to seat beside you. The last sun rays cast upon his armor, making you whince subtly from the light's sting. "I believe things haven't changed between you and me, Princess." - "How troublesome, there I thougth there was hope for the both of us.", your sarcasm throws a shadow of contrast against Law's more serious statement.
The knight's eyes land on your book's label, deciphering the name and persuming it's content. A smirk grows over his lips and he comments nonchalantly: "If you are in attempt to school yourself in deceitful doings, I suggest you to undertake the trainings somewhere your victim cannot see what you are up to."
An eery aura looms over you, staring down the man on the neighboring seat. He lifts his hands in defense: "Oh, with all due respect, your highness." - "Save your courtesy for tonight's dinner, knight of heart."
How much you despise his sarcastic mannerism, not that you are any better, yet it won't get over your head, that it actually enlightens you, a rather exciting banter given the fact how eyes mirror the truth. Nonetheless, you decide to set aside the undesirable, he is not to be trusted.
About to make your way back to the castle, you close the book with a loud snap and open the parasol, leaned against the stone bench. "I hopefully won't see you tonight, my Lord." - "You might.", as you click your tongue, you turn on your heels and carefully tread the path.
However, you hear a mused voice chuckle behind you: "I am looking foward to further intriguing discussions with you, your grace."
The gravel underneath your feet cracks and pops by the impact of your soles, quickening your step, the sound grows louder.
This man . .
Law shakes his head in disbelief, internally smiling to himself. Just when he was to get off the bench, a shadow scurrying along the forest's edge catches his attention. Squinting his dark circles enframed eyes, the feeling of unease makes a vacant appearance.
"Wie beunruhigend . .", he mutters in his native language, rubbing his neck before sighing in discontent.
(Translation: "How concerning . .")

Safran pastry, wine, dried vegetables and fruit, ham and rosemary potatoes . .
. . fill the table, plates assorted over every empty surface. The loud snaps coming from the fireplace echo in the dining room.
"You are the first to arrive my Lady, shall I bring anything to drink?", Valeria leads you towards the bountiful table. Thanking your chamber maid, you ask for a goblet of wine in hopes to shorten the wait for the other's arrival.
Taking a seat by side the chimney, you watch as the flames dance and flicker, hypnotizing you to a certain extent. The smell of the delicacies lets your insides growl in hunger, impatience growing stronger each second.
Valeria returns with your beverage, a smile tugging on her lips as she hands it over to you. One sip of the red liquid is enough to make your head spin, given by an empty stomach.
Behind the closed door, you hear a well-known voice laughing and discussing vividly. "I'm sure she'll be delighted to hear- oh you're already here love!", who would have thought it to be your father, entering with none other than Trafalgar?
Didn't you politely wish for him not to attend earlier this afternoon? Must be something about his hearing. Your pout enhances your sour mood, leaving Valeria amused - smirking to the display of you practically burning holes into the king's ambassador.
"My Lady, he is quite the looker no? I heard he's much so adored amongst women.", she snickers, leaning towards you. It is only until now, that you notice Law wearing a black vest, buttons undone far too low for your taste. Is that the same symbol like the one on his armor's chest plate, tattooed on his torso?
The lines embellish his porcelain like skin, enhancing the muscles. Every breath shows over his heaving rib cage. Heat shoots up your face. You're not certain wether to blame it on your rage or . . abashment from your insolent staring.
Steel eyes catch your slip, lids falling and forming into an intrigued glint, with a hint of curiosity. Law's blown pupils avert back to the conversation he's holding with your father.
Audibley gulping, you curse inwardly for letting your guard down this way, asking Valeria for more wine to deter the matter. Your chamber maid titters.
The food is as delicious as ever. "My compliments to the chef. This is Alfred's work I assume?" - "Yes, your highness.", the king praises the culinary experience, fowarding them to Valeria, who bows deftly and begins to bring the amassing empty plates back to the kitchen.
As if prey to the predator, you avoid Trafalgar's cold glare, him fleetingly observing you by noticing your each and every move.
"(Y/n), I would like to announce rather good news!", is what you hear, coming from the other end of the table. A proud grin plasters over your father's mouth and he continues: "Lord Trafalgar will be your guard for the time being." Did your hearing just falter?
Back and forth, switching between your father and Law you gape at them in disbelief. Without a word, you sip on your golden goblet and set it onto the table - provocatively slow. "Father, I cannot accept this.", you hiss and straighten yourself, about to leave the room.
Out of patience already, the king uses his privilege of hierarchy: "This wasn't a question young lady! It is final, he will be your guard!"
Close to throwing a tantrum, you control your burst of emotion - deep breaths holding in the bitter words lingering on your tongue.
Diffusing the tension, the knight gets off his seat and approaches you, dispersing the undeclared: "Your grace, it is only for the time I stay at your castle. It won't be for long, I can assure you."
The way he stands infront of you, his head held in veneration, which you doubt is in honesty, he places his palm against his heart. Loud enough only for your ears to hear, he hushes: "I'd be honoured, if I gained a mere speck of your trust, Princess."
Discomfort is vacant on your demeanor, fidgeting and twirling your fingers - it is then, where you come to realise that Valeria was right, he is a looker. In addition, his voice brings your body to unknown territory, feeling weak to the knees out of the blue.
No! Stay strong (Y/n). He is not to be trusted. He is not to be-
"Ich stehe Euch zu Diensten, euer Hoheit.", Law hums in his native tongue, his hand asking for yours in order to demonstrate his respect - his seriousness in all this. This truly isn’t not a joke, is it?
(Translation: "I am at your service, your Highness.")
Gently, you put your trust in him, though with abiding doubts, however the lips that enticingly sought your acceptance, press onto the silken skin on the back of your hand. At that, it lasts far too long to your liking.
The gooseflesh that usually forms out of pure horrification, now bears a completely different meaning - you are flustered, roused even. "Th-That's enough Lord Trafalgar! Quit making an utter fool of yourself, I accept . ."
-_
People gather and follow the brightly lit lanters, leading to your kingsdom‘s capital. The air stings your skin - winter's first greeting this year.
Horses pull wagons, filled with wares and goods to be sold on the market, their hooves clopping over the cobble stone streets.
Passers by look at you in curiosity, for you pulled the rim of your hood a tad bit too further down your face. Annoyance growls your way, as Trafalgar mutters: "Are you trying to torture me? It's the fourth time this week we tread among civilians."
"Why isn't that tedious? I thought you are at my service, my Lord.", is what chuckles out of you, fidgeting at your cloak. Law only clicks his tongue to your insolent and conceited behaviour, these walks to the capital not exactly being in his book.
The high pitch and grating squeals from a group of women rips the both of you out the conversation, or instead distasteful chaff. You turn to see the source of commotion and notice a green haired man seated on his charger, leading a patrol team.
Three fully grown stallions take a halt beside you two and the leader addresses you: "Up and about to visit the markets, my Lady?" - "Commander Roronoa! What a pleasant surprise! Indeed, I am headed to see the jewelery and pottery stands. And I assume you are here to keep everything under control?"
Nervous, you shuffle in place, feeling lightheaded and your heart picks up the pace by the sight of your royal guards' high chief. The red tint on your cheeks begins to glow and you give your brightest of smiles.
The king's ambassador isn't a fool, fully comprehending that you are fond of this man. Law watches you closely, realising how your demeanor changed in a sheer instant - leaving him to question 'why you nuture such hatred towards him?'
Trafalgar's attention averts to the green haired smirking bastard. His armor is shimmering onyx, adorned with a dark red cloak falling from his shoulders. Counting three golden earrings on his left ear, in addition, Law is taken aback by the long grazing scar eternalised onto Roronoa's left eye.
You practically swoon for this simple Commander. How ridiculous, the raven next to you thinks to himself. Nonetheless, why do you seem so . . approachable, loving? It goes beyond your temporary body guard's comprehesion.
Now confirming your assumption, Roronoa nods and grins over both ears. His horse's impatience shows by it's uneasy scuffs of it's hoove against the ground. Reins are getting pulled to calm the stallion, all while in the process of giving Law a long lasting stare, the Commander scoffs: "The scary dog privilege should keep you safe. Be seeing you, Princess."
"I beg your pardon?", the knight of heart tears open his eyes, shook about the term that lowly 'Soldier' Roronoa spat at him a moment ago. Yet, the occassion to counter his insolence passed it's point, as the patrolling group rides ahead to the capital.
You beckon: "Come along now, my Lord. It isn't far now." Walking the path, heavy footsteps catch up to you and the raspy voice of the man you oh so curse gives you more reason to incite. "Interesting, your highness is about to drop the hankerchief for a mere royal guard.", Law muses, not a care in the world of exposing you.
"Oh hush, this is none of your business, mere ambassador.", is what you pout, lifting your nose in arrogance. There is a feeling of success, subconsciously aware that you are victorious in this game of childish ribbing.
Admittedly, this sinister man has grown on you, given the fact he ended up as your personal guard about two months ago. Still, never would you concede to those hidden innuendos in his steel glare, looking at you in ways you wish to misinterpret from the beginning.
There is that certain . . spark.
Your body guard isn't keen on being called a 'mere ambassador'. Why, you do seem to know your way in hierarchy, (Y/n). Ignoring your insult, Trafalgar escorts you further to the village, only minutes away on foot.
-_
Merchants call out to the potential customers, roaming across the market's streets.
The smell of freshly baked bread, mead, smoked ham and all kinds of herbs fills your nostrils as you pass stalls.
Sauntering, you take in the ambience, inhaling the scents and enjoying the peace and calm the time brings.
Occupied with the opposite concept, Law worriedly lets his gaze hover over the crowd, not wholly indulging in the cheerful of this event. "My lord, you appear distant. Something the matter?" - "Just vigilant. The situation isn't as tranquil as it looks.", his concern is contagious, your question bounces off a wall of stubborn and discipline.
Suddenly, a piece of turkish delight restricts Trafalgar's vision, for you hold it up right infront of his face: "Calm your senses and taste this! I am sure you simply are too overattentive."
Eyebrows furrow, skeptical about your offer, the knight declines. "I can turn this into an order very quickly, if you won't abide.", using your hierarchy card against him, there is no use in refusing you.
The powdered sugar gathers around his chapped lips, spreading over his black chin beard. If you wouldn't know it any better, this display of your guard chewing on the sugary delight is more than appeasing to you.
There he stands. A fully armored knight, carrying around a long sword on his shoulders. A man so intimidating, people genuinley think of him to be an evil creature, the princess's scary guard dog.
The so called scary guard dog apparently is tamed by your unexpected gesture, suckling on the honey and wiping away the sugar from his chin. "This isn't very lady like to feed someone lower than you, your grace.", he utters, but his comment falls on deaf ears. So you retort: "It isn't very guard like either, to eat out of the princess's hands."
Logic is non existent in that case. Rolling his eyes, Law turns away from you and steps away from the merchant stall.
The more time you spend together like this, the more you learn about the knight of heart. All forenoon, until the sun reaches it's highest peak, teasing banters and chaffs dispersed into thin air, as if there were none to begin with . . as if Lord Trafalgar was a good friend.
Friend? Is that how you wish to call him that?
Your heart sets out a beat, considering the idea of declaring your point of view of this relationship between him and you. Law walks a few feet before you, making sure anything in front is secured, yet it is his position to be at fault in less crowded alleys you find yourself in, not noticing the following immediately.
About to speak your mind, a giant and calloused hand slams onto your mouth, to silence your muffled gasp of shock.
You can hear your blood rushing through your ears, the lungs in your ribcage tighten and push out the remaining air in panic.
"You are far too pretty to wander around these parts of the kingdom, Lady VanDoth.", sounds from the back, a nasty snarl hushes over your shoulder and the tinge of alcohol wafts around you.
Black silhouettes your vision, recognizing Trafalgar turning around, instantly unsheathing his blade: "You! Get your filthy hands off the princess!" - "Princess?" The stranger snorts in gutteral gloat and presses a dagger against your throat, responding in Law's native language.
"Habt Ihr es nicht gehört, Ritter des Todes? Der Herrscher dieses Königreichs ist tot. Diese Frau, die Ihr hier seht ist nun die Königin, Narr!", he spits in amusement, the blade gnawing on your skin, blood trickles down your gorge from it‘s puncture.
(Translation: "Didn't you hear, knight of death? The ruler of this kingdom is dead. This Woman here is now the queen, fool!")
Noticing a distinct tattoo on the masked man's hand, a grinning skull being split in half, your guard gets enraged and approaches the maniac behind you in threateningly slow motion, his sword ready to slice it's target: "Scheisse . . ich bin derjenige den Ihr sucht, räudiger Sohn einer Hündin! Lasst sie gehen! Sie hat nichts mit dem Grinsenden Schädel, weder der Donquixote Familie zu tun!"
(Translation: "Shit . . I'm the one you're looking for, son of a bitch! Let her go! She has nothing to do with the Grinning Skull, nor the Donquixote family!")
The stranger chuckles sinisterly, deftly paying no mind to Trafalgar's threats. "Did you hear that little girl? Your father is dead!", so he states, earning a whimper of distress out of you. Dread widens the windows to your now vulnerable soul, emotions forming into salty droplets flowing down your cheek. You don't trust your hearing.
Out of impulse, you aim your fist for his groin, but there is no chance you are able to reach him, his stronghold keeping you in place. "Now now, let's not get hasty, bitch. My master will be pleased upon your arrival in Flevance."
"I said hands off!", you hear the atagonizing scream coming from Law, who storms at you in full spead. The dagger fends of the longsword, though only barely and the maniac pulls you along, yelling to back off. Fingers claw into your neck, limiting your ability to breathe - already close to passing out.
The knight is tied, he cannot advance without you getting fataly hurt, thus he stays at a safe distance.
So the masked one grabs you by the wrist and makes a run for it, throwing insults and curses at you among the escape attempt. You hold out to your guard: "Law!" All is left to see, is Lord Trafalgar clenching his teeth and sprinting the opposite direction.
No . . please. This cannot end this way. Those words cloud your thoughts, bringing you to a state of overwhelming doubts and fear, your limbs becoming numb.
In terror, you see how your people get assassinated by other countless men with hoods hiding their faces, the grinning skull imprinted on either their arms, hands or necks.
Women screech out of horror, children cry and men fend off the ambush with all the power they're able to muster. It is a picture of nightmares, blood and intestines spread across the ground to those bastard's sheer pleasure, hearing them snicker as they murder one after the other.
The assassin roars at you furiously: "Run faster you whor-" Just before he gets to end his provocation, the stranger's head rolls over the cobble stone next to your feet, for a blade quick and sharp separated it from those ragged shoulders mid movement.
"Princess, we must make haste! The king has been assaulted and the castle is still under siege!", a loud voice calls out to you on the back of a horse, riling in place from the hectic. It's Commander Roronoa. His hand holds out to you, heaving you onto his stallions's back and animates it to gallop straight to the palace.
Scurrying and aimlessly running from the danger, the village folk seek shelter, dodging Roronoa's charge. In the distance you identify an archer, the bow taught and prepared to shoot it's arrow, aimed towards you.
In fret, you squeeze your eyes shut and you hear the Commander cursing under his hitched breath.
Yet, the arrow doesn't find it's target. A tall man, armored in cold steel thrusts his longsword through the enemy's stomach, shredding the archer's bellows. Boneless, the body sinks to the ground and the man saving your getaway yells: "Go secure the castle! I will hold the line here!.
Trafalgar enables your escape, covering your back and ridding anyone who dares to follow you. In the corner of your eye, you watch as he fights a group of assassins trying to come after you.
He saved your life . .
-_
Countless moons passed since the Donquixote intrusion.
Luckily, your army was prepared for such atrocious attacks. It wasn't enough to save your dearest father whatsoever.
The goodbyes were painful, the grief only grew by the fact you weren't able to protect him. Doubts about Lord Trafalgar overwhelmed you, to think it was his doing, which turned into a burden he understood will never be forgiven that easily by you.
The knight of heart, or as it came to pass, knight of death, was in fact seeking shelter for the time being, instructed as an under cover body guard of yours. Your father took him in, granting him shelter, to gather and plan the reclaim of his kingdom.
Where security was surmised, chaos induced along this man's path. You knew he wasn't to be trusted, however was he truly to blame? Eric VanDoth was a generous and peaceful man, a king to look up to, although the risk of being used for kindness - which in this world was never a good weapon to begin with - not ever was disputed.
Lord Trafalgar appreciated VanDoth's support, deeming him a honorable and trustworthy man, these words said to you in his utmost condolensces.
All this, Law explained to you through the years of renewal and acceptance of your rulership. What would have happend, if you knew these plans sooner? It is uncertain to you why they have been kept from you, but you assume it was for your own protection.
So to this day, you are the queen of the Red line empires, (Y/n) VanDoth the fourth, ruler of the gate kingdom. A great responsibility has been bestowed upon you, as the keeper of the celestial directions and seas.
And Law? It was a great announcement, one you actually were glad and overjoyed to hear - Trafalgar Law, reclaimed his place as king of Flevance, for him and his people countered the Donquixote overtake.
Life turned for the better - peace once more was restored to the northern empires, as the rightful ruler returned home.
Nevertheless, you unlikely admit that a feeling of longing filled your mind, as your thoughts spinned around the king of heart. Only letters, inscripted with the obvious interest and lovable banters, a spark, left you yearning for more - and the day of his visit was finally about to occur.
-_
"My queen, Lord Trafalgar has arrived!", Silas reports while walking towards the throne, on which you are seated.
"Bring his followers to the gathering halls and let Trafalgar enter the gardens, I'll await him there." - "Yes, your highness.", you thank your servant with a warm smile, nodding at him and straightening yourself off the throne.
Valeria follows you silently, her attention never wavering from you. You turn to face her: "Please dear, bring me my parasol." Deftly accepting your request with a low 'my queen' she makes her way to the cabins.
The sun's grace enlightens the castles halls, crystal clear windows deflecting the rays in all kinds of colours onto the bronzen embellishments. It reminds of the times you entered the throne halls, whenever he sought your father.
Today wasn't any different, for at long last you are able to see him again.
Greeted by the usual garden of red and purple, you breathe in the crisp and warm air surrounding you, reminiscing the past and looking foward to the future all the same. The parasol provides you with protection, it's shade cooling your skin.
You take a seat at the stone bench and admire the scenery before you. It hasn't changed, not at all. After all these years, it is as if time stood still, solely for this moment.
"Your grace, I think you are missing your usual literature. Shall I bring it to you?", a voice deep, makes your head spin hastily to the source of familiarity. His name hushes out of you in whisper and you cannot help but laugh at his remark.
There he stands, Trafalgar, the king of heart. Of course you haven't forgotten your courtesy and get off the bench to bow subtly as greeting.
Glimmering in the afternoon's shine, his armor reflects the heart upon his chest, which he wears in pride. It's colour has been changed to anthracite grey, the pauldrons heavy on his shoulders and every edge of noble plate is adorned with fine lines of bright gold.
Only the cloak remained the same, haging on his back elegantly, throwing off a threatening shadow beneath his feet. How you wish to pull the hood over his head and draw him in . . yet, what makes you think you are allowed to?
His hand gently holds out to yours and leads it to his lips, respecting the regards a queen of your calibre deserves to earn. "Except for your title, nothing has changed about you, my lord." - "I can say the same about you, your majesty.", knowing glints of hidden love interest is what you share, seeing the man in front of you kiss the back of your hand with utmost care.
Strolling through the royal gardens, you walk side by side of one another, speaking of your empires' new era, Flevance's reclaim and the Red line's capital restoration. Much has happend the time Lord Trafalgar saw you last - in honesty a shame, he thinks to himself, nonetheless the saving of his kingdom was inevitable.
"Have you considered entering the bond of matrimony, your grace?", Law questions you out of the blue, a shiver running down your spine in surprise. It wasn't what you ought to hear from a man of his stature, thus you answer earnestly: "Not yet, not properly. I must admit it would be of convenience."
Heavy footsteps inch your direction as the both of you come to a stand, sturdy chains clank against his sabatons in the rhythm of his approach. He lowers: "May I have the honor?"
Dumbfounded you watch him kneel down before you, embracing your tender palm: "I humbly ask for your hand in marriage." Full of expectations, his steel eyes wander up to witness your reaction.
It skipped, the beat of your heart - blood rushing through your veins in high speed, the air bearly leaving your lungs. All your nobility, all the the royal grace you have to represent melts off of you. Emotions strongly washing over, hearing his declaration.
Will you accept?
-_
He remembers it as if it was yesterday.
You, in a gown competing the beauty of nature, it's white silk embracing your delicate frame. The bells rang and people cheered in glee. It was the happiest day of his life, for he swore an oath to his loving bride, to protect her, to be her supporting hand and shelter.
This is the day, the Red line empire has been united with Flevance, emerging as a powerful kingdom over the northern seas. Bound by marriage, a king and a queen reign over the lands that once were shattered, rebuilding hope and solitude.
At that, it is a strong bond, a matrimony sought in reason of love, which is a seldom, but not uncommon case. You welcome the warm feeling of your doting husband being your pillar, your base of unwinding.
The white fabric glides off your shoulders, exposing your soft skin. A shiver runs down Law's spine, entranced by your allure. Pupils dilate due to tremendous attraction towards you and he gruadually steps closer. "Ich habe keine Worte um Eure Schönheit zu beschreiben . .", he mutters in his tongue, to that you solely manage to chuckle in reply.
(Translation: "I have no words for your beauty to describe . .")
This is where you decide to prove your ability to provide an answer in kind: "Kein Grund, so förmlich zu sein, mein König. Ich bin ganz die deine." - "Auch noch sprachbegabt? Ihr steckt voller Überraschungen." The man looks you up and down, a shaky breath escaping him, knowing too well, what is about to occur.
(Translation: "No need to be so formal, my king. I am all yours." - "Also gifted with languages?" You are full of surprises.")
Lips, that Trafalgar yearned for to taste, finally conceal his, silencing every thought in his mind. To think, that the both of you harbored such hatred for each other, love has conquered your hearts in the end, the sense behind it inexplicable.
Hands, that longed to touch you, graze your waist and neck, pulling you in nearer, as if holding on for dear life. Close, is what he needs you to be this instant, his warmth engulfing you as he tilts his head to deepen the kiss.
A voice, that whispers your name and foreign words as if chanting a spell. Not all is beknownst to you, however one sentence reverberates in your ears as he purrs: "Ihr seid das Schönste, das unter der Sonne wandelt, meine Herzdame." His sweet nothings elicits a low moan out of you, what Law deems as a melody to his senses.
(Translation: "You are the most beautiful thing that walks under the sun, my queen of hearts.")
Garments are spread across the floor. Two lovers found their way to the bed, intertwined, driven by desire. For the first time, your eyes feast upon his lean body, embellished with dark, fine lined tribal ink all across his torso.
Tracing the imprinted ornaments, your fingers hover over them with utmost care, earning a satisifed sigh out of your spouse. "I dearly hope you are not all too appalled by-", before he can finish his sentence with hinted sarcasm, you hush him with your index, pressing those precious lips shut. So you coo: "Quit your foolery, you know I love you, all of you"
Affectionately, he lowers himself onto you, heart to heart, chests heaving against each other - nervosity evident in both of you. Peppered kisses along your ear let your back arch, leaving you in languish as he pulls away to groan huskily: "Dann gehört dies Euch, meine Königin."
(Translation: "Then this belongs to you, my queen.")
Leading your palm to his wildly beating muscle in his ribcage, he romantically offers you his heart, confessing his feelings towards you yet again, knocking the air out of your lungs.
Now one, his length penetrates your velvet walls in a painstakingly slow and passionate manner. You squirm and tremble to the rhythm of his grinds, filling you up completely. Cresent prints trail down his back, the scrapes flushing in a sarutated red.
You purr his name into the crook of his neck, sideburns tickling you in the process. Subsequently, you tug on his golden earrings, taking Law off guard, as he moans in response. Those gestures madden the former knight, bringing him to gain in volume.
Sweat trickles along his hairline, for he picks up the pace and lifts your leg by grabbing the plush of your thigh. Now deeper, the tip of his hardness hits you in spots that lets you see stars, in combination with his delightful hums of pleasure it sets your core ablaze.
A bit more forceful, his hand takes hold of your breast, squeezing it out of pure lust, watching you as your head rolls back in bliss. You are reaching your climax, lulling incomprehesive words to your lover. Gently pulling on your hardened and pink tinted bud, he cannot supress his vast impulsives, listening to your pleas: „Yes, let go for me . .“
From overstimulation, your free leg slings over his thrusting hip, drawing Law‘s frame even closer. Lips clash onto one another, muffling the enticing sounds of your high. His teeth prod against the plump and the tongue twirls along yours.
A rush of sensation washes over you - feeling animal, feral - as your orgasm spills out of you, dripping down his groin. Law is chasing, not far from his own release for the scene infront of him lures him into all out ecstasy.
Giving in the crave to make you his entirely, he pours out the love he long dreamed about indulging you in. Weakend, his whole physique stutters and quakes, overwhelmed with the idea of claiming his beloved queen.
Warm air brushes against your skin, coming from Law nuzzling your cheek, panting: „Ich liebe dich.“
(Translation: "I love you.")

Chapter 3: I’m a Troubled Teen (Going Up North to be a Lady-In-Waiting)
Many years ago
The Enchanted Forest
“Your highness, the King and Queen request your presence.”
Oh, God.
It was never good when your parents “requested your presence”. Most of the time it meant you had done something wrong. The last time this had happened, you had jumped off the side of a royal navy ship in your underclothes and satin slippers.
You shut your book and set it down on the side table in the library, standing up and dragging your feet as you followed one of the advisors. When you approached the door to the “good parlor”, as your mother called it, he knocked three times. You thanked him and after he shut the door a tense air thickened around you.
Your brother, Eric, sat at a chess table with your father while your mother sat by herself in the loveseat practicing her embroidery.
“What?” you said.
Your mother smiled. “We just wanted to know where you were.”
You looked around awkwardly. “I was in the library…Why did you ask for me?”
“We wanted to spend time with you,” your father said. “It feels like we haven’t seen you in ages!”
“What’s the real reason you asked me here?” you asked.
Still partaking in her embroidery, your mother smiled and looked up at you from the sofa. “We have some news…You remember King Leopold, right?”
“Sort of.”
“Well,” your mother said, continuing, “his wife, Queen Regina, is looking for a new lady-in-waiting…and they’ve asked for you.”
Your stomach sank. “What?”
“It’ll give you a chance to observe how a kingdom runs,” your father said. “And, it forms an alliance between King Leopold and our kingdom.”
“But–But, Eric is next in line!” you protested. “Shouldn’t he be doing the observing? He’s going to be ruling this kingdom within the next few decades, but instead he’s out on a ship sailing a–”
“Enough!” your father shouted. “This decision is final! The ship sets sail in a fortnight. Queen Regina, King Leopold, and Princess Snow are already expecting your arrival. I won’t hear any more protests from you. It’s time you learn some responsibility and this is the best way to do it.”
__________
Present Day
Storybrooke
You knocked softly on the door to Regina’s home. Waiting a moment, you glanced over to see a sliver of her finger parting the fabric curtain in the front window, just in time to see it quickly close again.
The deadbolt in the door clicked and the door cracked open slowly.
“Hi,” you said quietly.
Regina seemed stand-offish. When the door opened further, you could see it in her eyes that she had been crying.
“Can I come in?” you asked.
She nodded and let you in. You had only been in her home a handful of times–mostly dropping off Henry after school–but it was still as beautiful as you remembered. Instead of admiring the dark hardwoods and the tall ceilings, you focused on her–and now you were admiring much more.
There were still tears in her eyes and wrinkles sat scattered over her navy pantsuit. Everything was becoming so clear in this short amount of time–every dream, every vision, the vague images of your parents in your head. A part of you wanted to yell at her. She took so much from you, but, god, it was hard to be mad at her.
“Um, Regina,” you murmured when she closed the door. “I just wanted to say–”
And there was that feeling–her lips. They encased yours so perfectly. You could feel her strong hands grasp your biceps as you leaned into the kiss. You took a few steps back, bracing yourself against the wall when Regina pulled away. “What?” she huffed. “You wanted to say what?”
You searched her eyes. “Nothing, it can wait for later,” you said, grasping at her shoulders as your lips met again for the first time in 28 years.

Cool It ~ *Kevin Moon*
Tumblr media
Summary: On a lazy day, you decide to make brownies for the boys. Kevin, your boyfriend, decides he wants to help you. However you'd call him more of a hinderance than a helping hand.
Pairing: Kevin Moon X Fem!Reader

“Do you know what you’re doing?” Kevin asked from the doorway as you grabbed the necessary utensils for your task ahead.
“The instructions are on the box. All I have to do is follow those. How bad can it be?” You explained reading through said instructions on said box.
“For you it must be very difficult.”
You glared at him. “Fine, be that way. No brownies for you then.”
He started to pout. “You’re so mean to me. I thought you loved me!”
A chuckle slipped past your lips. “Nope, sorry. I’m in love with Jacob now so he’s getting brownies.”
Kevin made a noise that sounded like a cross between a gasp and a shriek. Pointing an accusatory finger at you, he spoke accusingly, “Now that’s a low blow! How could you do this to me? And with my best friend!”
Rolling your eyes, you scoffed. “Quit your whining and come help me already.”
“Fine.”
Your boyfriend got you the ingredients and utensils you needed while you made the brownie batter. You caught him trying to throw flour at you more than once, but you would simply remind him that if he did, he’d be cleaning up by himself. He would mutter under his breath that you were no fun and you would stick your tongue out as your response. After pouring the batter into a pan and placing it into the oven, you handed him one of the beaters.
Kevin narrowed his eyes on you. “Doesn’t this have egg in it? You know that causes salmonella. Oh my God, my girlfriend is trying to poison me! First you cheat on me with my best friend and now you’re trying to kill me. You must not love me anymore.”
You rolled your eyes at his theatrics. “I’ve done this all my life and have never gotten sick. You’ll be fine. So cool it, drama king.”
He huffed before cautiously taking the beater and pointing an accusatory finger at you. “Yeah well if I get food poisoning, you have to take responsibility and take care of me.”
“Fine. Now eat before you spill.” You teased as you ate the batter that was on your own beater.
While the two of you ate and waited for the brownies to bake, you both talked and joked around. It was moments like this that you wish would last forever. The Boyz seemed to be getting busier and busier everyday and you honestly missed Kevin more often than not. So having brief moments in time that allowed the both of you to slow down and enjoy being in each other’s company was the best.
Before too long, the timer beeped and the brownies were done. You carefully took them out of the oven before cutting them into twelve squares. Kevin glanced over your shoulder before frowning.
“What? No fair! We only get one?” He whined.
“Yes everyone gets one, alright?” You turned to get whip cream for them when you stopped. There ten pairs of eyes were looking at you expectantly.
“We smelled brownies.” Eric commented, making you sigh.
“You’re right, I made brownies. Let me get the ice cream and whip cream before you all get one. And save one for me please?” You instructed as they all got in line for their piece.
Before too long, it was just you and Kevin in the kitchen again, each with your own brownie. “Hopefully they taste as good as they smell.” He commented.
“Of course they will! I made them!” You announced proudly.
He poked you with his fork. “Hey! WE made them.”
“I made the batter!”
“I gave you the stuff to make the batter.”
“Fine whatever.” You sighed before shoving a bite of brownie in your mouth and instantly regretting it. You tried to swallow it quickly before taking a huge sip of milk. Kevin couldn’t stop laughing as you fanned your tongue hoping to cool the second degree burns you got on your tongue.
“They just came out of the oven, dummy. Just cool it.”

“he’s so tiny,” you cooed, looking down at the baby boy in your arms. he looked so cute with his tiny nose, tiny lips, tiny ears. He looked so precious all wrapped in his baby blue blanket.
Jonah gazed down upon his son, and smiled warmly as fresh tears rolled down his cheeks. “He’s perfect.” His voice barely above a whisper, as he looked down at his sleeping son.
Ava walked up to your beside wanting to see her new baby brother. Jonah picked her up and gently placed her beside you, and she smiled softly seeing her baby brother. “He’s so cute.” She cooed, quietly and gently took his tiny hand. And his tiny fingers wrapped around her finger.
Her eyes widened in awe and smiled, you couldn’t help but choke back a sob. He squirmed slowly opened his eyes, taking in his surroundings and whined.
“He’s got your eyes.” You said, looking up at Jonah who leaned down planting a kiss on your lips.
His eyes landed on Ava, a faint smile growing on his lips. “He smiled at me he smiled!” Ava said, excitedly looking at her little sibling. She looked at him and smiled, “I promise to look after you.” She said, gently rubbing his hand. He cooed, looking at his big sister.
Ava looked up at her parents, “What’s his name?” She asked, and her parents looked at eachother and smiled looking back down at the baby.
“Eric,” He said, looking down at his son and Ava giggled. Eric squeaked as if trying to laugh and the family cooed over the infant excited for what the future held.

Iraq, 2003.
Camp slayer 0800 hours.
Your tan combat boots hit the floor in a rhythm as you made your way to Rachel’s office. You had just received word that Colonel Eric King was assigned to lead the team. Rachel’s team. You’d known about their previous relationship and you knew it was extremely complicated. As Rachel’s best friend, you’d gotten caught in the crossfire several times. What I fucking headache. She’s going to loose her shit ice she hears about this. You took a deep breath before knocking firmly on her office door, clutching the paperwork in your left hand. You were standing with your hands behind your back. Your long (y/h/c) locks were pulled into a tight bun, you had on a dark green tshirt, which was tucked into your uniform pants, which were tucked into your combat boots. the typical uncomfortable marine uniform crap.
You heard a bit of shuffling around and giggling before rachel answered the door, stepping aside so nick could leave the room. her hair was messy, and nicks hat was clearly crooked. What the hell? Your jaw nearly hit the floor when you saw a fresh hickey on his neck. Nick nodded at you and kept on down the hall, and Rachel sighed at the look on your face. “It’s not what it looks like, y/l/n.” She almost whispered as you stepped inside, You waited until she closed the door to have a mini freak out. “Not what it looks like?! Rach! Are you serious right now? He’s your subordinate!” You we’re whisper yelling. Praying nobody like merwin or Joey were walking by, they’d definitely make a big stink out of this.
She sighed and leaned on her desk, biting her thumb nail. “I know..” she mumbled, looking at the floor. “I just, I don’t know.. With all the bullshit with Eric I think I just wanted to feel something else, you know?” You looked at her with raised eyebrows, your hands on your hips. “No Rachel, I don’t ‘know’.” You said, using your fingers as quotation marks. “Please, enlighten me. Tell me. How do you think Eric is going to react when he gets here?!”
Your breath caught in your throat as Rachel’s head snapped to your direction. “Excuse me?” She stood, raising her voice a little. You ran a hand down your face in stress. “He’s going to be here within the hour. Christ, rach.” You groaned, pacing around the room. She was already fixing her hair in a hurry. “Straighten up, don’t say a fucking word about any of this, I mean it. We’ve got enough bullshit floating around this camp. The last thing anybody needs is your and nicks affair getting out and about.” You pointed a finger at her, before turning and leaving the room. Slamming the door shut. She may have been your superior, but she knew you were right. You had every reason to be mad. Nicks your best friend, you don’t want his heart getting broken, nor do you want either of them to be reprimanded if word got out.
You walked very hurriedly to your shared bunk room with nick and Jason. The tips of your ears were red with anger. You threw the door open, quickly slamming it shut behind you the second you were through. The first person you saw was nick. Perfect. “Hey scout” nick flashed a soft smile, he was lacing up his boots, sitting on the edge of his bunk bed. “Just the guy I wanted to see” you said through gritted teeth. Smacking him on the back of his head. “Ow! What the hell y/n!” He shouted. Rubbing his head “what the hell were you thinking? Nick, her husband is going to be our new CO. If he finds out, your ass is grass.” You sighed. “And I’ve heard he’s a real dickbag. So, lucky you.” By now You we’re pacing again. Chewing on your bottom lip, not looking at nick. “I’m sorry, y/n. You gotta understand, after the checkpoint-“ he shook his head. Looking at the floor.
You looked over at him, softening your eyes and moving to sit next to him. You, nick and Jason had just been involved in a shooting a few weeks back. You squeezed your eyes shut, trying not to think about the blood. “I get it.. I’m sorry.” You mumbled. Rubbing his back. Before you could say anything else, the door had swung open. It was Jason, he looked almost.. scared? “Guys, pull your shit together and get out here. Our new CO just landed” he panted, before running off down the hall. You giggled a little at how discombobulated he seemed. Jason always had his shit together, but apparently not today. You and nick shared a soft smile before standing up, heading out the door and towards the briefing room.
Tumblr media
Briefing room, 0830 hours.
You were leaning against a desk, listening to colonel king give his presentation. Nick and Jason were on either side of you, listening close. Your eyes were trained on the floor tiles, arms crossed, not really paying attention too much. You were nervous about this mission, maybe even more nervous that Jason’s arm kept brushing against yours. ‘Stop it, he’s your boss, idiot’ you thought to yourself. Jason’s always been your best friend alongside Nick, but lately you’ve been getting mixed signals from him. One day he’d treat you like one of the guys, punching your arm and talking about guy stuff. Then the next day you’d catch him stealing glances at you from across the room, defending you from merwin and his gross jokes, and making sure you were taking care of yourself.
You mentally kicked yourself for thinking about him in such a way. He’s your friend, y/n. He doesn’t see you like that. He’s just a nice guy. You repeated that to yourself until you heard Jason speak up. “Boys are just eager to catch a break, sir. No harm meant.” ‘Did I miss something?’ You thought. Looking up at him and nudging his arm a little. A confused look on your face. Jason tilted his head down, leaning his head to the side and whispering “fill you in later.”. You nodded. Still listening, but keeping to yourself.
After Eric was finished with his presentation, you made your way over to Joey. He was talking to Eric with a concerned look on his face. As you approached, you cued in on their conversation. “Bet the farm on this. I have a good feeling we're gonna clear up." Said Eric. “I wish I shared your optimism, Colonel." Joey spoke, the colonel turned his heels and made his way over to Rachel, as you leaned on the table next to joey. “Hey, you okay?” You looked at him with a soft expression. Joey was always like a big brother to you, ever since you joined the team he and you would always get into trouble together. He sighed. “I’m okay, just a little worried is all” Joey shrugged
“Hey, don’t be. Nothings gonna happen to any of us, not if I can help it.” You smiled a little, tilting your head. “What if you can’t help it, scout? What if I can’t help you or, or merwin or-“ “hey” you interrupted “will you stop that. We’re gonna be okay. Promise” you stuck out your pinky, which made him smile a little, before wrapping his pinky around yours. “See? Everything is going to be A-O-K” you stood up straight. Knocking on his helmet playfully before walking off, on your way to get ready for the mission.
Tumblr media
Tunnels, 1100 hours, 63ft
“Y/n! Get down!” You heard Joey scream, it sounded almost like an echo. What the fuck? “Joey?” You groaned. Everything hurt. You felt like shit. You tried to sit up, only to gasp at the sharp pain in your shoulder. Your eyes snapped open, only to see it was dark all around you, besides the circle of light around you, which came from the giant hole in the ceiling above.
“Oh, what the fuck?” You winced, rolling onto your side. Your vision was blurry for a second, before everything came clear. The pain in your shoulder was burning like a white flame. You clutched it, only to find that it felt wet. “Ah, shit” you hissed. Pulling your hand back into the sunlight. Your hand was covered in blood. “Fan-fucking-tastic” you whispered, looking around to observe your surroundings as you stood up. You couldn’t really tell where you were exactly, other than it was a tunnel of some sort. “Joey? Jason?” You whisper/called. Careful incase there were enemies nearby. “What the fuck” you whispered, again and again. It’s the only thought you really had, as you looked for your weapons. other than finding your team and patching up your shoulder, of course. You assumed it was a bullet hole, giving the fact you were just in combat. ‘Oh, shit.’ You thought. The memories flooding back.
You stood up straight, checking your clip. Thank god it was full. You took a couple steps towards the dark tunnel, raising your weapon. Turning your headlight on. You could barely see, the path was so narrow. You clicked the intercom button on your earpiece “Scout to mailman 3, Nicky? Where are you?” You spoke just above a whisper. Your new call sign made you smile a little. Jason had given it to you a few days ago, saying something about how you’re like a girl scout.
As you approached you realized the three figures were Nick, Jason and clarice. Nick and Jason were saying something about needing to find you, and You heard merwin groan in pain. “found her” he managed to get out, making them all turn around “fancy meeting you here” you joked lightheartedly, grabbing your knife and starting to cut the wires. “How did you- what? Where did you come from?” Jason said in disbelief. “I honestly don’t know, jase” you said softly. Glancing at him for just a second, before continuing to Concentrate on not injuring you or merwin any more. Finally, you cut the right wire that sent merwin to the ground.
As you all surrounded him, he started screaming again. “oh fuck he’s so fucked” you heard Jason say breathlessly. “You don’t think I can- hear you” merwin gasped between breaths. He really was fucked. Blood and guts never really bothered you, but this was just awful. His skin was torn to shreds, pieces of barbed wire still mauling his flesh. You had to do something to get it out. “Hey, hey, look at me” you said softly. Putting a hand on merwins helmet. You were trying to comfort him. He may have been a dick, but that didn’t mean you needed to be one. “It’s gonna be okay, I’m gonna patch you up best I can, and then we’ll get out of here. Everything is going to be just fine.” “There’s morphine in my pack! Get it!” You heard Nick yell, “Jesus, who the hell loaded these packs” Jason grumbled. as you turned your head to look at them, clarice was yanked into the darkness.
“What the fuck?” You whispered in disbelief. You could hear your heartbeat in your ears. Jason stepped towards where clarice had disappeared. “Clarice?” Jason called softly, only to be answered by a menacing shrieking. Jason and Nick jumped back, meanwhile you had already grabbed merwins pack straps, ready to start moving him. “The fuck was that?” Merwin winced. Jason and Nick each grabbed one of merwins arms. “Move! Now!” He shouted, dragging the man behind the 3 of you. The trail of blood following.
“Nick he’s bleeding out, we have to take care of this” you insisted, dragging him into a corner. Hoping whatever was out there wouldn’t find you. You kept pressure on merwins wounds while Jason scoped out the area. “How is it?” Merwin winced. “You want the good version or the bad version?” You couldn’t look at him, knowing he was fucked either way. “Just give it to me straight.” He groaned. Nick shook his head, “I’m not gonna lie man, it’s pretty fuckin’ bad”. The shrieking was getting louder as you moved to start patching him up, he was bleeding out too quickly. “Whatever’s out there, he’s drawing them down on us!” Jason said in a panicked tone. You’ve never seen him this scared. “He won’t hold still jase, you need to get the morphine in him.” You turned your head. He was like a deer in headlights. “Now kolchek!” You demanded, he was a good soldier, they called him the best of the best. You knew he’d follow an order rather than a plea.
In a second Jason was digging the morphine out, as Nick kept his hand over merwins mouth to keep him quiet. you kept bandaging up several of merwins wounds, Joey had been giving you medicine training but it wasn’t enough.. wait, where’s Joey?you thought. Nick started to say something, but couldn’t hear what He was saying over the intense shrieking coming from down the hall. By the time you and Jason looked up, it was too late. “Nick, you’re choking him!” You slapped his hand away. Jason moved to check his pulse.
“Can’t find a pulse, I can’t find a fucking pulse” he said in a panicky tone. You looked over at Nick. “It can’t be! I- I didn’t mean to-“ he stuttered “he’s gone Nick, merwin is dead” Jason spoke just above a whisper. Your heart sank. You fell back into your heels, looking down at your blood soaked hands. Nick looked at you both in sheer regret. “I’m sorry- I- I didn’t mean, fuck” he nearly shrieked. Standing up with his hands on his head “Nick it’s okay” you sighed. “It was an accident ” You stood up, ignoring the pain in your left shoulder and side. Jason stood beside you. Your heart jumped when you saw him out of the corner of your eye. Fuck. Why did he have to stand so damn close? Normally you’d be annoyed that someone’s up your ass, but Jason being close made you feel.. safe? Not the kind of safe Nicky made you feel. Nick always said he had to protected you, but you wanted jason to protect you, to hold you. Jesus, this ain’t the time.
“We gotta move guys, they’re coming.” You turned, and jason grabbed your left arm “hey we need to-“ You let out a yelp, Jason immediately released his hold. He had grabbed your bad arm. As the adrenaline wore off, you remembered that you were shot. “Fuck” you seethed as you clutched it. Him twisting your arm made it start to bleed again. “Y/n? What the fuck happened to you?” Jason moved closer. Grabbing your shoulder to examine you. “Ow, ow jason, be careful would you?” You whimpered, The shrieking from whatever was chasing you seemed to have subsided. “Christ, you got hit” he sighed, applying pressure. “Good news is, the bullet went clean through” he spoke softly as he started to put bandages on each side. “Bad news?” You seethed, Clenching his shirt tightly. “We’re out of morphine” he chuckled. Making you smile a little “awesome” you turned your head to look at him.
He seemed so focused. his eyes were narrow on your wound, cursing as he fumbled with the last bandage. You never noticed how attractive he really was until now. His face and arms were covered in dirt, he had a cuts and scrapes all over him. He brought his eyes to meet yours and you immediately felt your face heat up, looking away and at nick. He was looking at the floor, clearly upset. “Nick-“ “Let’s move” Nick said sorrowfully, breezing past you and Jason, and down the cave corridor. You looked up at Jason, who was already looking at you. “Do you think he’ll be okay? You whispered as you both started to walk, careful not to let Nick hear. “He’s a big boy, he’ll be fine” Jason spoke as if he was trying to convince himself, rather than you.
Suddenly, you hear some sort of clicking noise behind you. You turn, shining your headlight towards the noise. Your heart stopped. There was some sort of.. creature crawling towards you. It was winged, and massive. “Oh my god” you gasped. Jumping back. The creature shrieked, standing on two legs and bellowing an inhuman scream. “Fuck, fuck! We gotta move!” You heard Jason yell, in an instant your tiny group was racing down the corridor, being chased by whatever the hell that was. You rounded a corner, seeing collapsed debris over a small staircase, and a clear bath right next to it. “We gotta go through it!” Nick shouted. “The other ways safer, she can’t make it through-“ You cut Jason off irritably. “I don’t need my damn shoulder to jump.” You hissed, immediately hurdling over the collapsed pieces of structure. You didn’t mean to sound like a bitch, but now was not the time to be careful.
The boys followed close behind as you ran into a semi open area. Before you could even look around, something smashed into your side, knocking you to the ground. “Y/n!” You heard Nick shout as your back hit the floor. The winged creature was ontop of you, clawing at your face. You shielded yourself and tried to kick it off as best you could but to no avail, you pulled out your knife and started stabbing it in the chest. “Get it off!” You shrieked as Nick and Jason started shooting at it. the thing ran off, giving you time to scramble to your feet. You clutched your side in agony. “God I hate this place” you groaned, continuing to run down the tunnel. You ran as fast as you could, praying to whatever god was listening that there weren’t more ahead of you. You came to a corner. Stopping and pointing your weapon behind you down the hall.
“What the hell is going on?!” Nick shouted. “I don’t know man, it was not supposed to play out like this” Jason spoke shakily. “How the hell are we going to get out of-“ you were cut off by a voice over your earpiece. “Any call signs this is king, contact contact! Taking fire! Does anyone cope over!” You turned to look at Jason. “That’s Rachel!” Nick cried. “King, this is mailman 2-1 actual say again, over.” Jason said, holding his earpiece. No response. “king this is mailman 2-1 actual. How copy, over?!” Nothing. “Damn it!” He hissed, turning around and leading down the tunnel.
A little bit of time had passed, and all three of you had been walking for a while, in silence. Nick was the first to speak up. “I killed him” he choked out, “I fucking killed merwin” he let out a shaken breath. “It was an accident.” You and Jason said nearly in unisons. “Just like the woman at the checkpoint” he shook his head. “Don’t make shit weirder than it already is, clear your fucking mind!” Jason hollered. Making you jump a little.
“We need to find someplace to chill out for a second. Figure out a plan” you grumbled, turning a corner and seeing Eric, sobbing near a cliff. You felt so dizzy that you really didn’t care about Eric’s state of being. “Go see what’s up with him, I’ll keep watch” you said to Jason, who nodded and approached the colonel with Nick. You could hear Eric crying, but couldn’t make out any of the words. Everything hurt, your head was pounding, your shoulder felt like it was on fire, and your side was in excruciating pain. The creature that took you down must have broken a rib, or at the very least bruised one. You were still worried about Joey, hoping he was topside and safe.
“Rachel!” You jumped and ran towards your teammates at the sound of Nick yelling. “What the hell happened?” You said, looking between the three men. All of them were staring over the cliff. “No..” you stepped back. Shaking your head in disbelief, tears brimming your eyes. How could she be gone? You felt sick. “We gotta move, colonel we’re sitting ducks! We need to fall back, now.” Jason hollered. “Over there” Nick pointed towards what seemed to be a separate room, with huge doors. “Let’s go” you sighed, following Jason & nick. Eric was behind you.
“Scout, you’re bleeding” Eric exclaimed. Rushing to your side. “I’m fine, really, kolchek patched me up” you gave him a weak smile. “No, I mean you’re bleeding through the bandages.” “What?” You looked down, your shirt drenched in fresh blood. “Son of a bitch” you hissed, applying pressure. “Scout you don’t look so good..” Nick said warningly, walking closer to you with Jason beside him. “Gee, thanks sergeant, you really know how to make a girl feel special” you joked, trying to lighten the mood. You knew you’d eventually loose enough blood to weaken you, but you didn’t think it’d happen this quickly.
“Y/n seriously. Look at me.” Jason spoke up, and you did. “Jesus Christ” he breathed. Instantly putting your good arm over his shoulders. You tried to resist, but you were too tired. “Jason I’m fine, I can keep going.” You pleaded. You didn’t want to be dead weight. “Bullshit.” He grumbled. Picking you up and carrying you through the door. Everything faded to black.

Flashback
-
“Scout, hey! Um, hello? Earth to y/n?” You heard, picking your head up from your sketch pad to see Jason. “Oh hey kolchek. What’s up?” You were sitting on your bunk, relaxing after a long day of paperwork. “I said, Whatcha drawing there?” He chuckled. Sitting across from you. “I- um- nothing.” You said hurriedly, attempting to close your sketchbook, but he snatched it up to take a peek. “Jason!” You whined, trying to get it back. “No no! Let me see!” He laughed. Standing up and backing away so he could take a better look. “Well, we’ll miss y/l/n, something you need to tell me?” He teased. Holding it up and pointing at the half finished drawing of himself. He was standing in the briefing room, infront of a beautiful arched doorway. “I- no. What? No. I draw all of you I just- fuck this is awkward” you groaned. Covering your face with your hands. “Well?” He teased, raising his eyebrows with a grin on his face. “Jesus, Jason, I-“ you sighed. “I just like to draw you guys, that’s all” you looked up at him, praying he wouldn’t flip a page and see the one of him shirtless on the previous page. “I’m just teasin’, I think it’s pretty cool” he smiled, handing the sketch pad back. “Thanks” you smiled, taking the pad and setting it on your cot. “Next time though, you should draw one of us” he gulped, realizing what he just said. “You know, all of us” he said a little too quickly, causing you to raise an eyebrow. “Well well, mr kolchek, something you wanna tell me?” You teased, mocking him. You stood up, walking closer to him. The tension was growing thicker every second. “I-“ he was cut off by Joey coming into the room “guys, Merwin and Nick are gonna- woah. Am I interrupting something?” He said in shock, seeing you and Jason nearly chest-to-chest “nope, not at all, Cmon lieutenant” you hummed, following Joey out of your room. Jason just stood there, flustered and confused.

The summer sun felt glorious after the rain. You couldn’t help but tilt your head up to the light as it burst through the slate grey clouds.
This is the life.
When you close your eyes, you can hear birds singing in the trees and bees buzzing around new blooms. The wind sweeping through your hair made you sigh in contentment.
"I asked you not to wander off."
"Your grace." You turn around and curtsy when your husband, king Aelius, joins you. "Yes. You did ask me not to wander off, but this," you waved a hand at the lush meadow, "was too good to miss."
Aelius looked around. The meadow did indeed make a pretty picture and was the perfect place for the picnic he had planned. The clearing of the weather certainly helped. "It’ll do."
On his order, his servants set up everything, even a spacious tent, should rest be required. And, as happy as you were with everything, you believed there were too many eyes on you. "Your grace, I was won--"
"Aelius." He said as he made himself comfortable on some cushions. "For we’re married now."
Three months of married life and you still slipped up and called him your grace. "Aelius." Aelius. You reminded yourself. After the sun.
And how he looked every inch of his name. Fiery red hair and brown eyes reminded you of the fine whiskey your father loved so much. He looked every bit the king too. He was tall and regal, with a glare that could bring the devil to his knees, begging for mercy. It was a glare he had for all others, except for you. His eyes seemed to melt the moment you walked into his presence.
"Sweetheart? Are you well?"
Those warm eyes now look at you with concern.
"I’m quite well." You reply with a blush. "I was just woolgathering."
Aelius studied you evenly, finding your flushed cheeks rather endearing. "Alright. You wanted to ask me something?"
What were you going to ask? Oh yes. Too many eyes. "Aelius." You whisper. "I was wondering if the servants could-- go away. At least till we’re finished."
He looked around, realising you had a point. There were too many eyes, some of them belonging to frightful gossips. Anything that took place would be repeated before the day was over. "Eric. The queen and I would like some privacy. Maybe you all can go back to the castle, and we’ll follow in the evening." Aelius glanced at the tent, then at you, then the tent. His eyes suddenly grew dark and dangerous. "You know what, make it tomorrow morning. The tent is new, and the queen and I plan on breaking it in."
You clapped your hand over your mouth to hide your laughter. Some of the servants looked positively scandalized.
"And the picnic things?" His valet asked while trying hard not to grin himself. "Your grace?"
"Eric, you know that I’m perfectly capable of picking up after myself," Aelius said archly.
Eric smirked and bowed his head. "Very well, your grace." After a single regal wave of his hands, the rest packed up their things and left.
"There." Aelius waited till they vanished into the distance. "No more spectators." He patted the cushions next to him. "Join me, please."
You smile and take your place next to him. "Is it true?"
"What is?"
"About you being able to pick up after yourself?" You ask with a straight face. "Because darling, I have seen the inside of your wardrobe, and your study, and I must say tha--"
"Shh-shh-shh-shh-shh-shh" Aelius waved one hand about theatrically and cut you off by placing the other on your mouth. "My, ahh, wardrobe, and study, are... a different matter. But I promise you, I’m no lazy arse. My mother raised me better than that."
"Really?" You smile and accept the lemonade he has poured for you. "Well, remind me to thank your mother then."
Aelius chuckled and helped himself to the cheese. "Knowing that sainted woman, she’ll rise out of her grave and tell you none of her lessons took; that everything would go careening in one ear and come charging out the other ear like an English carriage racer drunk six ways till Sunday."
You very nearly choked on your drink. "I think I would have liked your mother," you said, after clearing your throat.
"I think my mother would have liked you too," he said, trailing a finger down your spine. "Immensely."
The tingle that went up your spine made you close your eyes and shudder. " Aelius," you lick your lips in anticipation. "We’re-- we’re outside."
"We’re on private property. Our private property." His lips had curved into a wicked smile. "And Eric will make sure no one disturbs us."
"Well," you toy with the collar of his shirt. "That is a good point."
Aelius brushed his lips against yours repeatedly. He missed how your lips felt against his, how your breath mingled and your fingers laced through his own. "How long was I away again?"
"Seven miserable weeks," you grumble as your body presses up against his.
"Seven of the most miserable weeks ever, I agree." The smell coming off your skin reminded him of warm days and set his heart racing. "I’ll have to make it up to you."
Your grin matched his. "You better."
"Insistent. I like it." His head dipped to the crevice of your neck. "Just like," Aelius groaned as you tugged on his hair. "The softness of your skin."
Your eyes flew open when you felt teeth scrape over your skin. "Others will see the marks."
"Let them." He mumbled. "It’s not like they can say anything anyway."
He was the king. No one could say anything to you, and you were not a coward. "In that case, then--"
Aelius gasped when you grabbed onto his collar and pulled him up for a kiss. That gasp turned to a groan when you undid the buttons on his vest. "I’m glad we decided to send the servants away," he mumbled as he got rid of both that and his shirt as well.
"Well, it is better than being on our best behavior all the time, you know." You sat up as he worked on the lacing of your dress. "Indeed," he said as he lifted your dress and petticoat over your head, cackling when your head got stuck in the collar. "You, sir, are about as delicate as an overgrown bear trying to tiptoe over a frozen lake." You mutter after extricating yourself from the offending garment.
"You wound me." Aelius clapped his hands to his chest and put on a look of great hurt. "Oh, how you wound me."
You narrowed your eyes and glared. "You look so pretty when you’re angry." He teased as he worked on your corset. "Maybe you should anger me more often then." Your lips curled into a smile when his eyes lit up cheekily. "Maybe I should." He looked like he was thinking. "What if I track mud all over our rooms and leave soiled socks by the fireplace instead of cleaning up after myself?"
"Find another way to anger me." He yelped when you punched him playfully in the arm. "No soiled socks." You stopped him from speaking. "And no mud! Or other unmentionables, come to think of it."
"Other unmentionables?" Wicked humor flickered in his eyes even as he grumbled when your corset refused to yield. "What are these unmentionables that you speak off?"
"I’ve seen how you walk, husband." Him muttering ‘fucking corsets’ in indignation and pulling out a knife to deal with said corset made you snort instead of just laugh. "You-- you just." The snorts almost got the better of you. "You just flounce about without caring where you place your feet." You wag a finger at him, to make your point clear. "Your boots, are to come nowhere near our bedroom floors. Certainly not on the carpets. "
"I see why Eric likes you so much." He smirked as your corset finally came undone with a few flicks of the knife.
"Really? Perhaps I should have married him instead," you say tartly, as your corset was tossed to the side.
A widening smile died dead in its tracks as Aelius narrowed his eyes and pursed his lips into a thin, angry line. "That mouth of yours will land you in a lot of trouble one day."
Was he jealous? Was the great king Aelius actually jealous? How jealous can he get? "Like today?" You arched an eyebrow as if challenging him. Aelius bit his lip, then realised you were baiting him. He grinned. "Trying to make me jealous?"
Your grin matched his. "Yes. Why?"
"Because," Aelius leaned in and brushed his lips against yours. "That's not going to work with me." His breath felt sweet, his touch warm. "Y/n," he whispered and rested a hand on your waist. Flashes of heat pooled in your belly as that hand went higher, cupping your breast over the fabric of your shift. "I missed you. I missed this."
He let his lips skim over the shell of your ear. "I missed you, Aelius."
"Then no talk of Eric. Or anyone else." He growled this time, cupping your breast again and squeezing hard. "You are jealous." You could already feel trickles of heat between your thighs. "But there's no need to be," your breathed as you crumbled to the demands of your body. "There will never be anyone else."
Aelius pulled back, his eyes dark and filled with lust. "Good," He grunted. "Because you'll never think of anyone else."
"Really?" You gasped when he pushed you down and palmed your breasts. "And what are you going to do to make me forget everyone else?"
Aelius took up your challenge. "This."
He was suddenly heavy on top of you, his hands on your neck as he kissed you. Seven weeks. It had been seven weeks since he last kissed you, and he wanted to make it count. Aelius wanted to feel your body trembly beneath his palms. He wanted to hear your breath come out in pants, to savour the taste of your mouth. Feeling your fingers digging into his skin made him hard. "Someone really did miss me," he murmured and pulled away, just a fraction. The way he pulled up when you tried to kiss him annoyed you. "Stop being a bloody tease." You grumble.
"Aha, it looks like I have found another way to make you angry." Aelius chuckled and smashed your lips again, this time letting his tongue slip in when you parted your lips for him. You could only feel how soft his lips were against yours, how gentle his touch was against your skin. It felt as if he was invading your very senses, making you forget everything but him. Aelius peeked at you through heavy-lidded eyes, trying to make sure that he wasn't dreaming. You were right there with him, the warmth of your touch reminded him of what he had missed and he couldn't wait. His kisses scorched you, leaving you breathless and hot. You heard clothes being taken off and looked down. "Oh my." Your cheeks turned pink when his erect cock came into view. "You have missed me."
"Indeed I have," Aelius dipped to kiss you again. It was harder and more demanding, bringing you close to snapping. "Hurry," you beg. "Hurry."
Hurry. Aelius didn't need to hear anymore and hiked up your shift. "Y/n," he said, panting against your skin. "I'm not sure if I can be gentle."
You laughed and played with his hair. "I don't want you to be gentle."
His chuckle was soft and breathy. "In that case then..."
His kiss not only left you breathless, but it also distracted you enough when he pushed inside. The noise he made when he buried his cock inside you made it sound like he was dying. Aelius leaned down again, his chest pressing up against yours, his skin warm and sweaty as the two of you kissed. Your breath had grown ragged and you weren't sure how long you'd last. "Hurry," you urged him again.
His fingers dug into your skin when he pulled his hips back and slammed into you, his moans matching yours. You grip onto his shoulders when he grew rough, his teeth scraping at the crook of your neck. Aelius struggled to hold on for as long as he could. He wanted to feel you finish on him. He needed to feel it. When he felt you rake your fingers down his back he knew you were close. "Yes?"
Your answer was almost a sob. "Please."
His pace grew faster, erratic, his body shivering with yours. Just when you thought you could hold on for a little longer, your body grew tense and splintered, very nearly shattering you. The feeling of your tightening around his cock sent shockwaves through his body and brought on an orgasm that made him see stars. With a satisfied grunt, Aelius collapsed next to you.
He still kissed you, but they were soft and gentle now. "Hey," He murmured and brushed stray locks out of your eyes.
"Hey back," You stretch and make yourself more comfortable.
"What would you like to do now?"
You looked around and set your gaze on the tent, all spacious and warm. And unused. A wicked gleam lit up your eyes. "You said that tent was new? And that it needed to be broken in? Maybe we should actually break it in later and give the servants something to really gossip about?"
Aelius, upon regaining his energy, smirked and scooped you up. A good rest was needed, but after that…
"Say no more, my queen."
