I was reading what you said about your sona (thanks for answering by the way!) and as I took a minute to comprehend it being "canonically" really small, I just thought it was a bit funny how I look up you you in a way — to the point I still get nervous to write to you directly like this — when I imagine you as that really small character. Even more so because my sona is a whitetail doe, and therefore I get this image of a deer getting all excited and nervous in front of an animal not even, like, 1/4 of its size. I don't know, I just thought it was a silly idea, juxtaposing how it feels to me to interact with you versus how it would look playing out in our sonas with such a drastic size difference, and I wanted to visualize it!

Oh, and because I'm in a drawing mood but need an idea, and animal characters are my specialty! I really hope I depicted your character alright!"

Your impression of me being big and scary just to realize I'm a 30 cm dog is hilarious and matches the vibe of my sonas design I won't lie haha. the thing about ulysses is I was either 19 or 20 when I read it the prof was shit I'd teach it literally in the absolutely opposite way that she did AND.... you have to either be a native of that time (1922) or have a really vast knowledge of the genuinely pop culture and "culture" and curriculum, literally the curriculum of an Irish school, of that time like you have to be a "native speaker" of that time. in order to truly read it. so it's dense and annoying as fuck and 89.99% referential which I still think is a great weakness, like a profound weakness. but time has done it NO services and I'm only realizing that almost a decade later in a reread now that I have over the course of my education just sort of without trying amassed all this stuff so that I'm as close to a native speaker of modern lit as I'm frankly interested in being. that it isnt actually that dense or purposefully baffling or anything like that at all. when its PRESENTED as being dense and here's five hundred appendices and this is a huge deal and you dont have the knowledge to understand it, of course youre going to instantly hate it. it should have been presented to me as like this is not in your native language just like Shakespeare initially isn't, but then you find the commonalities between you and the text and you start to bridge that gap. and then depending on when you encounter this text in your education the bridge will be greater or smaller. Joyce is annoying and self serious and yes pretentious but so vastly less pretentious in particular than I thought that like... in the first two chapters I was taking a look at all the notes and it was maddening because I was resisting it. but then I decided not to even look at them at all and just read and be present in the reading and suddenly I'm catching 90-some percent of the references and having a pretty good time with their meanings and lack thereof. so like basically I should run every university in the world
