I love ninjago for so many reasons but the way personhood is never a doubt does something to me

It’s never even a question if artificial life forms count as people. Even way back in season one when Zane found out he was a robot, it threw him for an existential loop but all his friends were like “oh wow, huh… kinda explains some things, you’re still you though.” There’s the internal tension of questioning one’s own identity and self-worth, but his loved ones love him nonetheless. New information doesn’t change anything — he’s always been a nindroid, just as he’s always been Zane.

In season three when we meet Pixal the gang is concerned at Zane’s willingness to give up half his power source for her, not because they don’t think she’s a person but because he hasn’t known her that long. There’s the short lived question of her allegiance, but Zane confidently argues that she has free will just the same as him when not under the overlord’s control. The whole situation reads more like being surprised at how serious this new relationship is than questioning or invalidating Pixal’s autonomy.

And then, of course, we have Prime Empire. When Okino — an NPC — is told that the world they’re currently in isn’t real he is quick to denial, but as soon as the truth becomes inarguable he falls into a depressive episode. His whole life is fake, everything he sees is fake, he is fake. Even as Okino vehemently argues that he should be left behind, that his presence as part of the game puts them in danger, that their enemy — the creator of said game — could use him against his new friends, the ninja refuse. They firmly tell him “No, you’re our friend. You’re a good person and we trust you, trust yourself too” and it just freaking breaks me for some reason.

i actually have a personal headcanon that the rot intentionally kept pebbles alive and his can standing so they could keep eating, because if pebbles' can collapses most of the living bits would be destroyed so the rot would starve, so the rot would leave the most important bits alone so they could keep eating. its the only explanation i have for i why the rot clearly made it in pebbles' chamber in rivulet's campaign, but the puppet is intact in saint's campaign

anyway, i also have a personal AU where the rot goes even further and goes out of its way to extend pebbles' life, like i just imagine something the rot making it into pebbles' pumps and destroying them, causing slag build up, and pebbles pretty much resigns to his fate, maybe laughing at the irony of collapsing for the same reasons moon did, but then... the pumps suddenly come back to life, pebbles sends an overseer over and there is now a huge rot cyst pulling in water in the spot his pumps used to be, the rot also starts replacing broken parts of his legs to keep them stable, and pebbles can do nothing but watch as his superstructure becomes a fucked up ship of Theseus

For the first part that's really interesting. It's why I considered giving him wings too so when the structure gets too dangerous the rot can just use him as a host to leave.

I needed an illustration piece for portfolio stuff, so the last few days I’ve been working nonstop on a mock up book cover for an old story I made up when I was twelve LOL

It would be called “A Dragon’s Tail” but i have no graphic design skills whatsoever so there’s no typography on this book cover mockup

If you want a basic (and chaotically organized) rundown of the plot, keep reading under the cut LOL

In the OG story, there's 3 main characters: Adrien (QuetzalCoatl, or feathered serpent), Penny (a normal human) and Silver Stride (a unicorn).

Adrien the dragon was originally the main character that we follow (and if I were to ever rewrite this, she would continue to be the main character. I only put Penny in the center of the cover because it worked better for the composition i was going for, and I didn't have time to explore more variations.)

Anyway, Adrien's mother goes missing, and she teams up with a Penny, and Silver Stride, who have also lost their families to an evil wizard named Rogabas, who for mysterious reasons is kidnapping dragons, unicorns, and other wizards for an evil purpose.

No i can't remember what that purpose was, and i don't think my 12 year old self would know either tbh

The three characters would go on this epic journey to find the lair of Rogabas and meet a whole assortment of fantastical creatures along the way, like a giant talking goat named Merryweather who guards a bridge (a bridge passed down from generation to generation after winning it from a troll and demands golden carrots as a toll to cross it), good werewolves and bad werewolves, gargoyles who guard libraries, and I can’t remember why but in my old drawings there’s also this manticore (or maybe just a lion) with sunglasses for some reason. Maybe he’s just there to chill, idk.

Also there would be two side kick characters, who are two of Penny’s dad’s familiars ((((oh yeah penny’s dad is a wizard, too, unbeknownst to her)))) and guardians of “Magic Rock TM” that the evil wizard Rogabas is after. The side kick characters are two overzealous, punch-first-ask-questions-later rabbits named Flopsy and Mopsy, who are enchanted to know karate. (There is a whole leigion of karate rabbits who guard “Magic Stone TM”.)

(((If you’re wondering why a wizard would enchant rabbits to know karate, well of course every wizard usually has a collection of animal familiars enchanted to know a specific type of martial arts to guard their magical artifacts. This is standard practice, don’t you know? 12 year old me definitely wasn’t going off the title of “kung fu panda” and start making a whole bunch of animals like “Kung Fu Kitty” or Jujutsu Doggy” or “Judo-Penguins” or Tae Kwon Do Tigers)))

Also, I don’t know what “Magic Stone TM” is, I just remember it was a big important thing Rogabas was after.

ALSO also, 12 year old me decided that Adrien was adopted by a European dragon and had 2 siblings, Martin (a european dragon) and Cho (a chinese dragon) who were also both adopted, but If I were to rewrite it think it would be simpler to keep it to just Adrien and her adopted mom, just to keep the keep the already big cast to a more manageable number LOL

(Btw, “Rogabas” is the latin word for “You were asking” and when my sister and I were learning latin, we thought that word sounded like the name for an evil wizard and laughed ourselves silly saying “you were asking, evil lord Rogabas??” Over and over)

Basically the story would be this wild comedy adventure with a lot of magical tropes and shenannigans thrown in.

25. What reading goals do you have for next year?

Oooooh, I actually have many and, funnily enough, one of them is not to set too many goals for myself that I can't possibly reach lol. But one that I definitely have to reach (or I fail my exams) is to (re)read some of my French existentialist faves before my exams in February (so mostly L'enfance d'un chef by Sartre, Le Mythe de Sisyphe by Camus, probably also En attendant Godot by Beckett if they let me argue for why I think that deserves and existentialist reading) and some others for my other exams (haven't finished all my reading lists yet, which I really should do very soon tbh). Theeen I really want to read some of the few books I actually spent money on this year, because somehow if I spent money on them, I feel like I owe it to myself to read them haha. I recently bought Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart and Swimming in the Dark by Tomasz Jedrowski, and they both seem super promising, so I'd love to get into them as soon as the more pressing reading is "out of the way" so to say. And other than that, I'd love to read way more fanfics and get a good overview of the stories that are out there in the fandom :) Oh, and in general, I just want to diversify my reading a bit more. Like, I want to continue with my classics, but I'd also love to read some beautiful (preferably queer) contemporary literature on the side. (And I have a to-be-read-list on Goodreads that's ATROCIOUSLY long, so I hope to be able to cross some titles off it next year haha)
