it’s another life game and turns out, this time they’re linked to someone.

they share pain, life, fate. hearts connected, there’s no other word for it but soulmate.

scar doesn't look for his soulmate. he watches other people find each other, and he remembers how it was in last life. it's a bit too fresh. he thinks he doesn't need a soulmate. or maybe he doesn't deserve one. maybe he doesn't have one? it's wretched. maybe he just needs to find something that makes him happy instead.

so he chases after an allay and finds his way to cute jellie pandas.

grian. grian looks at scar in that lake and he doesn't yell nooooo

he just stares, shocked and transfixed. he isn't sure what this means. why is this happening? why is scar bound to him? and why is-

why is it so hard to tell him? why can't scar just notice? why isn't he paying attention, why isn't he searching?

grian watches scar's back as scar bounces away from him, oblivious.

and grian thinks it's okay. it hurts, he's insane with worry, but he's biting it down. he gets to build something safe. a food source. something to help them survive.

because they're a them—a we—even if scar doesn't realise yet.

grian goes to find him. he finds him surrounded by pandas, and... he needs to tell him.

he needs to tell him, but the words are hard to say. they sound cheesy. they sound false.

maybe he needs to prove it instead. have something to show so that scar can understand.

so he hurts himself.

he hurts himself to show scar and-

no, that's not right.

he hurts scar.

no.

he hurts both of them, efficiently in one go.

he's good at that.

but scar isn't paying attention.

it keeps fraying and straying from grian and-

scar, please.

grian does it again.

he does it again, knowing what's coming, familiarising himself with the pain that travels through the invisible bond.

he does it, and scar is looking this time, and-

"oh."

they stare at each other.

grian's heart beats wildly in his chest. he doesn't know what to expect now.

in one lifetime, he killed scar. in another, he isolated him.

he doesn't want to do those things anymore.

this time, they die together.

this time, there's no hurting one without hurting the other.

this time...

this time, grian thinks and holds onto it like a lifeline.

he wants to do better.

"it's you," scar breathes out finally, disbelieving tone sneaking into his words.

"it's me," grian confirms, queasy, his words wobbly around the edges.

he has apologies he wants to say.

they don't make it out.

but scar doesn't need them.

scar steps forward and gingerly touches grian's jaw, fingertips sliding up to his cheek. his fingers are warm, fingertips pulsating slightly with rapid heartbeat. "it's us," scar corrects both of them, easily, as if everything just slotted together without a fight, without a struggle, without the burdens of previous lives and pain and trauma.

"it's us," grian repeats, a little bit choked. he closes his eyes and leans into scar's touch. "we'll get through it together this time," he promises. no deathmatch. no abandoning each other. they're in this together.

Except the All-Father hardly had fairness in mind when choosing the sentence, nor does Loki himself plan to play along with the old man's schemes lying down. What everyone seemed to recently forget was that Loki was a trickster. They called him a cheat, a liar, a manipulator as a way to insult him, forgetting what being those things truly meant. If he had to find a way to break the All-Father's bindings from himself and at the same time hide from SHIELD, the Avengers and Asgard itself, all the while pulling all of their strings from the shadows to position them and prepare against the Mad Titan's inevitable arrival, he shall do it at all costs, in style and in just the perfect way to stick to the old man. He was Loki and it was high time he reminded everyone what exactly that meant.

ASOIAF American highschool AU bc I want them to suffer

-Jon is that guy you see in the hall all the time and he’s super cute but then you talk to him and he’s just. The most pretentious asshole you’ve ever met. He’s better than you bc he takes AP classes btw. And he’s on the basketball team but he’s brooding so he barely has any friends

-Dany is a little FREAK ugh I love her. She’s a GSA officer and wears weird clothes and cat ears to school and everyone makes fun of her but she’s the nicest person ever. Very passionate ab her special interests. super smart too like no one can say that she isn’t top of class

-Sansa is the nice popular religious girl who likes to make cookies for people. She’s like condescending nice though and is sweet to the losers mostly out of pity. Obsessed with Loras in a comphet way to cover her real crush on Margaery. She is on the swim team and loves to run the student council like the navy

-Arya is on the soccer and basketball team. Slightly to weird to be popular but too cool to be a loser. Kind of disruptive in class but it’s okay bc she’s funny. Definition of a low maintenance girl. Cuts her hair short and likes the way she looks in a sports bra and baggy clothes but has yet to find out what non-binary is

-Robb Homecoming King football captain you get the gist. Sincerely nice and is the one jock who’s on good terms with literally everyone in his classes. Tries his best to defend Jon (it is so hard) Has dated around but his most intense relationship is with his drug dealer burnout bestie Theon. They get jealous when the other starts dating a girl (both of them have yet to find out what bisexualism is)

-Joffrey is a grade A bitchass. He’s on the soccer or lacrosse team only because Cersei bribed the coach. No one really likes him but they hang around him anyway because he has a sick ass house and his moms hot. Thinks he’s smarter than he actually is, maintains a C- average

-Bran is that freshman you only see in khaki shorts and graphic t-shirts about bugs or some shit. Completely lives in his own world (autism slay!) and has trouble interacting with other kids. Besties with Meera and Jojen tho who just get him. Reads big ass philosophy books in his spare time

-Aegon is Dany’s cooler cousin. He’s way more popular than Jon and the two have a one sided rivalry that Jon made up in his head. Pretty nice to other people but he thinks he is such hot shit. His superiority complex is kinda crazy

-Theon graduated last year but still hangs around campus. Goes to Robb’s football games and sells drugs under the stands. “Where’s my hug at” guy. Drives a beat up Honda civic that’s on its last legs. Has multiple misdemeanors on his record. Robb thinks he can fix him

-Loras is Robb’s teammate who’s also mister popular. Already has a scholarship to a D1 school and is every teachers favorite (he takes advantage of this to skip class). Smart but doesn’t really try that hard in class. A classic DL gay guy who is in a situationship with grad student Renly after lying about his age on grindr

-Davos is everyone’s favorite History or English teacher. Gets invested in the students wellbeing. Gay kids LOVE him, he never can have a lunch period to himself those kids who are looking for a father figure are always eating lunch in his classroom. Has a loving wife and kids but is down bad for the eternally suffering Vice Principal Stannis

-Robert is the football coach and in most American schools you have to be a teacher to be a coach so he probably teaches health or sex Ed or some shit. Half asses his classes so he can go over film with his football players instead. You can hear him yelling from across campus. He is so loud

-Stannis is the vice principal who absolutely no one likes except Davos. Even the teachers don’t respect him. Has wanted to be principal for years but keeps getting fucked over by administration. Wants to move to a different school district so he can get a pay raise but the sexy Spanish teacher Mel is trying to convince him to blackmail the school board instead

-Tywin the principal. Used to be a AP US history or AP economics teacher but then discovered that he hated kids so he bullied and bribed his way into the principal position. Kids run when they hear him in the hallway with his walkie talkie crackling and his keys jangling. Lets Joffrey get away with everything bc he’s the principals grandson

-Cersei as the head of the school board. Always shoveling funds to her kids school instead of any of the other ones in the school district. Probably is in some sort of tax evasion or bribery scandal that Tywin is trying to cover up. Number one passive aggressive hater on Facebook

Steve loves Bucky no matter what and is determined to prove it to him however he can.

Summary: Soul bonding canon divergence. Fourteen million futures and Stephen saw just one where they win. Tony has to soul bond to a virtual stranger whereas Stephen... Stephen is in love.

Because I've been enabled once again, I've returned to my bullshit.

Once again, thank you to my favorite enabler/mutual @chazz-is-a-zelda-fan 💜

Today I present, a full and comprehensive tier list of every fanfic I've written and posted as well as a sneak at some WIP's and such 👀

Whether you've read everything or just a few of these, I'm curious to hear your thoughts and whether you agree or disagree with any of my placements of these works 🤔

Now that we've seen said list, allow me to briefly voice some thoughts on my placements 😌

Firstly, I've gone on record several times saying that I firmly believe that Favorite and Best are not mutually exclusive things. Just because something may be the "best" doesn't mean it has to be your favorite, and conversely, just because something may be your favorite thing doesn't necessarily mean you think it's the best of that thing either. But in this instance it just so happens my favorite fic, OUAD, is also the one I think is the best aksks.

OUAD is just brilliant. The combination of 4 of my favorite things: my favorite movie, my favorite Disney couple and just individually favorite prince and princess, my favorite show, and my favorite ship. A loose yet still fairly faithful adaptation of the film that brings me so much joy while also tearing my soul into shreds. And the casting? Phenomenal on my part. When I clear some stuff from my plate, I swear I'll be working on a sequel 😤

Salt In The Wound also got to sneak up into Best because in my opinion it's my best one shot. And also I just legitimately like the actual writing in it, I think it's some of my best work. Also I just needed it. I emotionally need that aftermath to Zane and Syrus's duel, I needed the comfort of them caring for Sy and catharsis from airing frustrations with Zane and the show didn't give it to me, so it's kinda a fulfillment that's on a totally different level than anything else I've done before.

Now Sons of The Stars. The fully crafted from the ground up, fully designed wardrobe, 130k fantasyish au that all stemmed from a throwaway joke in Angel's Tears. I love this one, especially the new updated version, I fixed so many things and just improved it so much from how it was originally. But I have some beef with it that keeps it from Best but still at the very top. The execution of Jaden and Jesse's romance isn't my favorite and I wrote it under a time crunch originally so you could tell towards the end I was rushing. That's been fixed a bit now but I still have a lingering disappointment with the idea that if I waited to write it originally I could've just done a better job overall with it. But as it stands I still think that fic is fantastic and it's my pride and joy.

Deviating from GX quick, my FFXV fic. What Goes In, this is just a good ass fic imo. Taking a segment from the game and answering for myself questions both the main game and Prompto's dlc raised and didn't answer, incorporating a lot of twists and turns and my own spin on what happens in that segment of the game, while incorporating actual game dialog and moments and shit too GAH it's good 😭 Also indulging in Promptis and Gladnis on the DL In the middle of all the pain and angst 🤭 biggest problem is that I haven't posted in it since March of 2020 and there's only 1 chapter left 😭 I promise I'm working on revising it right now and I'm finishing it by the end of 2023 that's my goal!

Might be controversial placement, but I put Sustained By Hate in the "Good" category......

Listen I love it. Camula coming back for revenge is an S+ idea. My problems lie with some of the execution, also me not really having the characterization of my version of Chazz's mom on lock yet. There's a lot of revisions I wanna do to that fic bro. Nothing too drastic or anything but still. There's also just so much happening in that one it feels a little messy to me now going back and re reading it. But Lexi usurping the main character role towards the end is brilliant and I actually wrote a duel which was hard as shit and I'm so proud of it and myself so extra bonus points for that! Overall, I love that fic but still as it stands I only think it's good. Perhaps a revised version would get bumped up on my list 🤔

Traffic Lights, my 5Ds one shot that's just Carly sitting in her car trapped in traffic 😂 not a lot to gripe about or say here, it's just a cute little work. I like it, I think it's good, but I feel like most of what I've written is better, it's that simple. I still really like it a lot though!

Angel's Tears, the first GX fic I ever wrote....... listen I thought this was my magnum opus for the LONGEST time..... if you've read the original version, that's embarrassing for me to say. Now the revised version I did recently? That's less embarrassing. But still this fic's only alright in my opinion. It was good at the time, I was 18 when I first wrote it and like I said, it was the 1st GX fic I ever wrote. But I've just improved so much as a writer, the newer version supports that better now akaksk and well, it's just not my best work in my opinion. I also don't really like the title anymore but it's been too long I can't change it now. But this fic was what got me started with writing these kids so I owe it a debt of gratitude for that. We wouldn't have all the rest of these works without it.

A Friend In Need, my Bastion one shot. Like the Carly one, not much to say about it. I like it, but it's just old and I need to revise it. It's cute and appropriately upsetting and a good idea to address Bastion's feelings of invisibility and inadequacy in season 2, the execution just needs to be given a face lift in my opinion.

Before I sneak at my WIPS, I'm gonna jump down to Rewriting.

Alice was an old fic I did that was basically an episode rewrite for episode 80, you know. The filler episode after they get back from Domino. With Alice... hence the title.... well if you read that story before I deleted it to rewrite it well you're entitled to compensation of some sort. It wasn’t good if you ask me. And rereading it there were a couple moments in it that made even me uncomfortable now that didn't back then. Literally I lost the plot while I was writing it like I jumped off the deep end a few chapters in and it dips so hard in quality. I'm just redoing it from like chapter 2 or 3 on, It has to be done.

Anyway now a quick roll call of my current WIPS for you babies because I like you and they're all S+ concepts 😌

Yes please!!

The GX/Fatal Frame 5: Maiden of Black Water crossover, I said that would be the next one after OUAD but well it's just gonna happen whenever it happens, that one is purely for me. I have actually started writing it and once I get a little further I think I'll be posting that one as I write it 😌 it'll take as long as it takes and y'all will have to deal with the suspense and cliffhangers while Alexis teams up with Yuri and the camera crew to find Atticus and rescue him from ghosts aksks (also I'm actually using the Japanese names for once in this one be proud of me!!)

And finally, So Take Hold of Me, And Hang On 'Till The Hurt Is Gone. You guys remember that one little snippet excerpt whatever you wanna call it with Chazz and Atty I posted I believe in like November or something? Yeah, this is that 🤭 I haven't touched it really since then but I'll make a full thing out of it mark my words! (Also the title comes from one of my favorite Yellowcard songs, "The Hurt Is Gone", that was actually the initial inspiration for that work 😊 that song, and the word "stay")

Anyways y'all, that's my tier list of my fanfiction! This was actually really fun but also really hard to make I'm so indecisive I went back and forth on a lot of these for so long akakksksksksks

Imma start by covering up Life Series concepts here... will get into Empires and a funny AU i have later on... NOTE: i JUST realized seasons go autumn -> winter not winter -> autumn, so lets just imagine either its the other way around for some reason or maybe the games happen across different years or the watchers use time shenanigans n stuff IDK!!

Last Life: cottagecore queers. they started as friends, sure, they're best friends, but best friends who kiss, hold hands, cuddle together, cook together, stick to eachother like glue istg. AND I REPEAT !! KISS!! SURE SMALL PECKS BUT THATS NOT VERY FRIEND LIKE !! ive read many queerplatonic galaxy duo fanfics, but i think they're just romantically crushing on eachother and w time their relationship quickly escalated and neither of them wants to ask the big "what are we?" question. (plus, I hc every season of the series happens in a different season of the year, maybe in different years?? idk cause i didnt count for 3rd life but i dont think it would count as spring... ANYWAYS Last Life happens in Summer, for angst purposes)

Double Life: I don't wanna talk too much abt their relationship in DL cus it makes me so mentally ill, reminds me of sum personal lore in my life I wont get into, but I still love em. I hc soulmates have some shared features w their soulmates, different for everyone, like these two have the ends of their hair the color of the others hair. after the "divorce" Pearl tried to cut off that teal part but the ends just gew upwards, like the teal part just appeared in his new ends when moon cut off the old ones, so at the end he just used red dye to dye em red. Also I feel like they lowkey miss eachother even if both are too stubborn to talk to eachother and at least try to fix things. (winter. winter freezes. often killing all that in summer grew green)

Limited Life: Oh hoh ho... the drama is back but the toxicity is gone. frienemies, exes, a bit petty still but can joke about it for a lil, have forgiven eachother but at times still feel resentment. they live very far away, yet when they interact in person, if things are 1o1 and there isnt any of their allies nearby, gosh can the tension be cut with a knife. not only tension in the way or anger, but sometimes just being awkward around eachother, sometimes homosexual tension, sometimes homoerotic tension- (half joke, i wont talk abt nsfw stuff but theyre adults). They stare at eachother from across the room thinking either "i wanna punch you so bad" or "i would so go and kiss you right here right now", or both. However theyre still fairly friendly, its not the same as *Our Last Summer*, since they'll maybe pull petty pranks on eachother, specially the Nosy Neighbors on Mean Gills, with Pearl mostly having Scott's ever so slightly upset reaction, if even to get a groan or frown from him, tho he doesnt hate her anymore, its not like winter, thats in the past. Autumn comes and makes leafs fall... it gets rid of the dead waste of what winter killed, preparing for Spring...

Secret Life: ... for a new beginning. Spring comes along, a new, more lighthearted game at the start. After going through so much stuff together, everything they've overcome, "That's in the past" "It was a one time thing?" "Yeah, yeah" "Well, I'm glad we agree... glad we can move past that". And they start again, blank page, althrough clearly stained by past moments, they can look back at them fondly and joke around about it without hard feelings. Not only that, but they finally make up their minds, both of them get their shit together and can finally label their relationship, make it official... tho whats a game about secrets without some secrets of their own? So at first, with a bit of fear of what their allies would say, but also just in a way to keep privacy and get a laugh out of others confusions, they meet up in secret. Secret meetings at night or when their allies are out, whispering to eachother and giving eachother accomplice looks, finding hiden spots to sit down and talk. They're plenty suspicious in plain sight, but with all the reasons there could be for them to be hiding something? Maybe theyre up to no good! Maybe they're plotting destruction! Maybe its got to do with their tasks! Yeah, it drives the yellows mad in particular, trying to guess their tasks just to be told it couldnt be further from correct or that they already complited theirs. Now some participants are a bit oblivious, but others can put 2 and 2 together pretty quickly... they'd keep their mouths shut tho, cause seeing the others lose their mind trying to uncover their "plans" is quite the funny sight. Maybe some would get a push like a little knudge from Cleo "They're dating, Bdubs" "... OHHHH, SO THATS WHY". The Roomies all know for sure, Impulse suspects, to Gem and the Mounders it never crossed their minds, unsure about others tbh but thats what I know for sure. But yeah! Maybe at first they'd have a "Bad Idea" (from Waitress) moment, tho that song also could fit an ""afair"" in LimL from what ive talked with a friend, but yeah. They're destined to die anyways, since the finale means only one can win, and that winner is neither of them, but they'll meet in the next game. Tilly next time. Or, Tilly death does them part...

... except not, cause not even death can do that, cause they are able to find eachother in every single universe, no matter the circumstances, even if their situation isnt ideal in some, they're always together, in one way or another. Ok friend you have my curiosity where is this fic you speak of. I am SO ready to have my brain chemistry fundamentally changed

Start here. My recommendation is to read that, maybe read the rest of Turnabout NaNoWriMo, and if you want to know more after that, I can hand you some 200k of fic that is properly formatted with the interludes, because Ao3's formatting really doesn't work with the Sagiverse anthologies. (So what you see here is maybe like a quarter of what we've got. We have a lot, and also lots of art.)

Turnabout NaNoWriMo is the first of three-and-a-half anthologies I've written, and it's only after reading and enjoying all of them do I let people at my fiance's anthologies, which are excellent but a bit more private. (Turnabout Runaways, which was this year's NaNo challenge, is incomplete but at least 50k. I will be slowly working on it probably for a few months, and eventually it'll be done.)

These anthologies take place in a greater crossover AU we refer to as Sagiverse. It started in 2020 in Saint Seiya, and now hosts several different series, eight hundred some-odd characters, upwards of thirty different fantasy worlds (of which Earth is only one), and more plotlines than we can keep track of properly.

Here's the two-sentence pitch: seven hundred years ago, there was a giant war between various magical factions on Earth that ended in a mostly-forgotten pyrrhic victory and the gods choosing to seal magic away from the world. So magic began to slowly die out, and as of present day, magic is rarer and rarer, and mage society is dying out, but it's still holding on as best it can, until one day the gods finally allow magic to return.

Ace Attorney gets involved with this very very simply. Miles Edgeworth is a mage. To be specific, he's a necromage, one of the most powerful currently active on Earth. His father, Gregory Atticus Edgeworth, had never found proof of magic while he was alive. His mother... well, no one knows who his mother is, or anything about the man at all. After DL-6, Miles was taken in by MvK as a ward just as canon says, but the von Karmas themselves are magi of a kind. After DL-6, Atticus finds the proof of magic's existence that he's been looking for all along, and he is not going to leave his son and missing fiance alone in a world that so very much wants the both of them dead.

And so begins a thirty-five year trainwreck to put their wayward, way-finding family back together. They'll do it, no matter what it takes. It just turns out their family's a little bigger than they think it is.

The fic I linked pretty much opens with the identity of Miles' mother, which you learn pretty much as I did, because I didn't plan jack or shit, only let him tell me what was going on. You may raise an eyebrow at the canon ages, don't worry about that. We had to fix the timeline anyway (because the forensics tech was all twenty years out of date so we just changed the years to be twenty years earlier, setting DL-6 on December 28th 1981) so we just didn't pull him back as far. Atticus died at 39, his fiance was 33.

This is because when I first got into AA, I found the IS-7 picture of Gregory and Ray, and I sort of mistook 18-year-old Ray as Atticus' wife. My fiance pointed out the age gap, paused, and went "but they're cute so I'm sure we can make it work" and then we did. If you hesitate a bit on the ship but don't immediately hate the idea, I promise I can sell you on it. At the end of the day, everything comes back to Atticus and Ray's tragic romance. This I can promise you: it ends happily. We're just still writing everything in between.

Sagiverse!Ray is a pretty distinct character from canon!Ray, but they're close enough that if you like one you'll probably like the other. I gave him way more trauma and it's fun. :3c

If you're wondering what happens to other characters, I can answer that. Apollo is dead for a few months, Phoenix a little bit longer. Robot!Athena has Issues. Franziska changes her career from Interpol to Magica Underground mostly because it's a better use of her legal talents. Miles gets to be the chosen one and lead a war against one of his university friends who unfortunately (and semi-accidentally) stole Phoenix's corpse and ran away with it. (Phoenix is fine, don't worry about it.) Atticus gets to be a bounty hunter on the ghostroads with Mia and they do a lot of shooting MvK and causing problems. Ray, uh. Well, at least he only got shot in the head twice?

This adventure begins on the Inkwell Isles. The Cup trio is joined by Dice and the Devil, who is now a cat. It's a long story. The new team is now traveling all over the islands to find something (or someone) that will help them get everything back.

And another awesome character will help them in this adventure!

Chapter 6 - Snooze

Marc Spector&Co. x Ex!F!OC, F!OC x Modern!Miguel O'Hara

Summery: Everything changed after Marc and Simone moved to New York. Being in a relationship with the Fist of Khonshu proved to be difficult enough without the added obstacles of normal relationships being forced into the mix. With seemingly irreconcilable differences overhead, fate’s plans continue to drive the pair back into each other’s lives, testing their patience, self-control, and new relationships. Is it truly written in the stars, or is it old habits taking over?

It was hopeless, and Simone knew it. She liked Miggy a lot, but it was no use. What consistently drew her back to Marc was taking over, and she couldn't stop it.

Turn around, go home, don't be an idiot. She thought, not just in her voice, but Jen's and Matt's, and everyone that knew she would go into full self-sabotage mode.

I can't. I can't do it. She replied to herself as her feet continued to step, jaywalking across the road to the angelic man in white, like a zombie-like junky needing her fix.

That Spector boy is no good for you, Mija! Leave him alone! Don't be a whore! The voice of her mom screamed in her brain. Luckily, Simone had gotten pretty good at pushing her out. The closer she got, the more she could breathe in his essence, which drove her wild. She was feral, like an animal.

"Moni?" He called out upon noticing her as her feet touched the sidewalk he stood on. In a flash, his mask was gone, and his face was all she could see.

Perfect. Good medicine wrapped in dark eyes and messy hair. Without hesitation, Marc grabbed her by the hips and spun her around, rushing her back into a set of seemingly feather-weight double doors. Before her eyes, they were in the old apartment in London, and his eyes flicked to the soft gaze of her Stevie. He no longer wore the white suit but instead a nice casual t-shirt.

It would have struck her as strange if she didn't feel so good here, where she belonged. With a pivot of their feet, he was the one being led backward, kissing Simone tenderly and sweetly as he always did until they practically floated onto the cheap mattress.

She straddled him as she did before as total muscle memory took over. It was unreal how she needed him so desperately and could withhold this feeling from herself for so long just to deem it as necessary as oxygen now.

The sheets began surrounding them as they sank into the pillowtop, deeper and deeper until they came clean out of the other end, falling through the atmosphere for a seemingly long time as his eyes changed before her once more, now being taken over by Jake.

Their bodies sank through the roof of his taxi and into the back seats before there was a second to fully process being out of the apartment. It was hectic and overwhelming, but she loved it. The whirlwind romance of it all, heavily panting and sloppily making out in this vehicle.

Don't wake up. She told herself. Don't let this end.

Simone did end up waking up, though, all on her own. She didn't feel fully rested when she did and couldn't pinpoint what it was that pulled her from her slumber this time. The sun was barely up, no alarms, no phone calls, just her body recognizing the old feeling she shouldn't feel anymore.

On her nightstand stood her phone next to a half-empty bottle of prescription sleep medication that she had been taking since she moved to New York. Ever since the kidnapping, she had found it hard to sleep in unfamiliar areas for fear of being retaken. The pills had the tendency to cause strange, lucid dreams.

In Simone's mind, it wasn't fair. After doing everything she could to avoid thoughts of Marc during the waking hours of the day, she couldn't seem to escape him in her unconsciousness. It was at the point where she'd rather lose sleep than have another dream.

Gotta stop taking those things. She told herself as she tapped the screen of her phone to find a single text from an hour prior.

Miggy: Hey, sorry for leaving you hanging. Can't wait to see you again. Call me when you get a minute.

Before heading to the gym, she took a moment to call Miguel and arrange a pizza and movie "night in" type of date that left her excited and energized. Now that she knew Miggy wasn't avoiding her, she knew there was nothing to worry about.

Though Marc had already had a session by way of the emergency one he called after Simone's date, he still had to fulfill his weekly meeting with Dr. Sterman. Unfortunately, she wanted to talk more about the topic from the earlier session.

"Have you spoken to Simone since?"

"I haven't. I've found that I do better keeping her safe from a distance. She's less likely to yell or swing at me that way."

His saying this reminded Dr. Sterman of something he had brought up when they first started meeting, and she shifted in her leather seat.

"What of the symbol? Has anything come of that, do you think?" She questioned.

"Symbol, doctor?" Marc asked, confused. The doctor cleared her throat,

"The story you told me a while ago about the symbol of protection. Do you think it's doing its job, or is it just a trick from your god?"

Marc suddenly remembered what she was referring to. "I assume it's working however it needs to." He answered with a shrug in his voice. His shrink saw right through this response and let the silence sit heavy between them until he decided to elaborate with a heavy sigh. "A couple weeks ago, this car nearly hit her. When I say nearly, I mean it was off by mere feet or less. I don't think that's a coincidence."

Dr. Sterman's eyebrows ticked up above the rims of her glasses at this. It sounded crazy, but then again, just about everything she heard from Marc Spector fit that bill. It didn't sound as convoluted as other things, but it raised a question in her mind.

"And that leads you to believe marking her was a good idea?" She wondered. Another long pause fell between them as Marc thought about what to say. He was still skeptical, himself.

"I don't know." He answered plainly, intertwining his gloved fingers. "I know she's still alive. For that, I'm grateful. Even if she hates me."

The topic brought Marc back to when he got Moni back from Walton. He had never seen her so weakened in his life. Simone was always one of the toughest people he knew, and to see her so helpless shattered him. Her face lacked any color that wasn't purple, yellow bruising, or browning-red, dried blood. He could make out every vein on her thin, closed eyelids with the crust from sleep surrounding her lashes.

She would hate it if I tried to rub them away. He thought, remembering how she freaked out at anything getting near her eyes and chuckling to himself. I'll leave it alone.

Simone had been unconscious for the few hours Marc was at her side, needles introducing necessary fluids to her body as she rested. He had his hand tucked into hers gently, fearing if he squeezed a little too hard, she might break.

"I'll never let anything happen to you ever again, Moni. I promise." He whispered aloud as if she could hear, dipping his head down to softly kiss her knuckles.

"There may come a time when you cannot be there for her, Marc, but there is a way." The familiar boom of Khonshu's voice in his head broke him from his somber state.

"Like I trust a goddamn word you say." He replied quietly, shaking his head. It wasn't the time for the bird to mock his pain.

"I speak the truth! Trace my mark upon her forehead, and she will be under my protection and yours." The boney bird-headed figure that was only visible to him defended, now visible at the foot of her bed.

As ridiculous as it sounded, Marc decided to pry. "Yeah? What's the catch?"

"She will be protected from harm, forever under my watchful eye as you are! Now, mark her with the moon."

Everything in Marc's body was screaming for him to deny this request. There was always a catch with Khonshu, always, but all it took was the sight of Simone as she was to make him feel like there was no other option. He couldn't always have an eye on her, just as he didn't when Walton grabbed her.

A heavy sigh left Marc's chest as he pulled his right hand out of her limp left and shakily inched it toward her face. He needed to do it. If there was a chance that she would be safer, he had to try.

A faint, red glow radiated from the tip of his index finger as he extended it. The same red glow stuck to her forehead's dry, scabbed skin as he traced the shape of a crescent moon on her. As he finished, the glowing line disappeared as if it weren't there in the first place.

Without a moment to spare, Marc watched as Moni's eyes began to flutter and slowly blinked open and blankly drifted from the ceiling to his face. He hadn't fully lowered his hand before she awoke, which prompted him to take her fingers into his palm again.

"Hey, baby. It's okay. You can rest."

Later that evening, Simone went to her office to review more applications for a new receptionist. To her surprise, a knock at the door nearly startled her out of her concentration.

"I'm not taking appointments today. I'm sorry." She called out, unable to make out the face through the frosted glass of the heavy wooden door that separated her space from the hallway. Another figure appeared, this one much short than the other, followed by another quick tap at the door and a girlish voice.

"Open up, Fredrick. We have treats!" The voice yelled, giving away that one of the people at her door was Jennifer.

Can't resist that kind of offer. Simone thought to herself as she stood and walked from her personal office to the waiting area and the door. As she opened it, Jen wasted no time sauntering in with a rather large bottle of red wine in hand, followed by Murdock with a stack of red paper cups from his office.

"What's the occasion?" Simone asked with a raised brow. Jen pivoted around on her flats to face her,

"Your new hunk isn't weird after all, duh!" She exclaimed, nestling the cork in her free hand. Before she spoke up again, she grew and turned green, pulled the cork out with her bare hand, and shrank back down. "Also, you're so lame for being here on your day off. What're you even doing?"

Simone rolled her eyes and started walking back to her office to grab the papers she was sifting through before their arrival,

"I'm still trying to find a receptionist since the last one quit. No thanks to you, Murdock." She replied with a playful bite. Matt had slept with her last receptionist, Luna, but once he realized they wouldn't work out, she found it too awkward to work next door to him. Matt put on a tone of offense,

"In my defense, she was always making personal phone calls. You should've gotten rid of her a lot sooner."

"She was better than nobody!" Simone responded as she scooped up the stack and brought it to the old sectional couch in her lobby. Jen poured the slightly chilled wine into one of the paper cups and offered it as Simone returned but wasn't surprised when she declined it. "I'm good. You guys go ahead."

Some time passed, and wine flowed as Simone continued to read over applications just for Jen to take them after she was finished and list the good qualities of every applicant, followed by a cheerful "You should pick them!"

"You know, you probably aren't helping much by telling her she should go with just about everyone she's seen," Matt told Jen with a shrug. Simone laughed,

"Right, I don't think Tracy, whose strengths are line dancing and bartending, is the best fit."

To this point, Jen dramatically gasped,

"What if this is the exact job she needs for experience?"

"As a professional, I'm more apt to hire Dustin with his paralegal experience, personally," Simone explained, gesturing to the application for the man in question. "Or, I'll just borrow Karen from you, Murdock."

"Absolutely not. My place would fall apart without her. Find your own!" Matt replied, causing the two women to laugh jovially.

Once the hysterics died down, Simone found herself going right back to the paperwork instinctively. When Jen noticed this, she frowned, and Simone caught this from the corner of her eye. She looked up from Winnie Corgin's application to confirm if she saw things right and noticed that she was correct.

"What is it?" She asked, taking note of the straight face on her other friend, as well, who didn't have to be able to see to know she was right back to work.

"Well, we just noticed that..." Matt started before trailing off with his mouth open like a fish, the words lost before they came out. Jen quickly recovered them,

"We noticed that you might be doing that thing you do where you push yourself into your work to avoid thinking about other things," Jen informed. "And if you are, that's okay, but we wanted you to know that we're here for you and that even psychiatrists are allowed to talk about their problems."

A furrow appeared on Simone's brow at this intervention. She didn't think she was doing anything different than usual, not in the least. Being an expert in human behavior, though, she realized that things could appear business as usual for her but strange to those close to her.

"I promise I'm fine, guys. I just have a lot of extra things to do right now." Simone attempted to explain as Matt shifted to the other side of the couch from Jen, leaving her stuck in the middle. His hand came up and rested on her shoulder,

"You don't have to lie to us, doc." He said in a sympathetic tone, giving away that he was listening to her heartbeat patterns. Simone, herself, hadn't even realized she was lying. She looked to her left and found that Jen was giving her a look that said nice try.

I guess I'll have to give them something to go off of. Simone thought before expelling a heavy sigh.

"For some reason, Mr. Knight and his chaos have been following me around, and I guess I'm just stressed that it'll cause a rift in what I have going with Miggy." She told her friends, stating her internal thoughts aloud. Matt's eyebrows perked above his round shades,

"You really like him, don't you?" He asked, reminding her of a question that her good friend back in London asked her in regards to the other guy what seemed like ages ago.

Simone didn't think it possible to find something special beyond Marc. Though she knew she liked Miguel, she hadn't let the thought cross her might that this is what moving on is supposed to feel like, and whatever love she still feels for Marc must be- has to be- left over for the man he once was to her.

Her best friend. Her rock. Her first love.

It had crossed her mind what would happen if that man reappeared to her. She yearned for it enough that she was convinced it could happen, but it was a foolish thought. Her Marc was long gone now. Just a memory.

"I do." Simone finally answered after what seemed like a long pause to her, but to Jen and Matt, it was just mere seconds.

Jen's eyes lit up, and a broad smile spread across the lower half of her face as she threw her arms around her friend for a weird, one-sided side hug.

"Our Simmy must be coming back!" She exclaimed.

Simmy? Simone thought as Matt's arms wrapped from the other end tightly. That's new.
