Flying Low

A magical AU where Law is a raven shapeshifter, but has had his wings torn off, so he is always using a cane to balance himself and he lives in seclusion in the forest. He absolutely doesn't trust, well, anyone. Whether humans or other shapeshifters or any other race, he doesn't approach anyone and does everything he can to not let them approach his home either. But that changes when one day a guy just falls from the sky. It literally falls from the sky. Right in the middle of Law's herb garden and although he really wants to get rid of this invader, he can't get rid of his curiosity because Law's house is in the middle of the forest, far from peaks or mountains, so where the hell is this guy came from and, even better, how did he survive the fall? Curiosity (and his sense of duty as a healer) causes Law to drag the guy inside and nurse him back to health. 'The guy' soon wakes up and gets a name, Luffy, who reveals himself to be a priest of the Sun God's temple, which makes sense to Law, since Luffy's magic seems totally opposite to his, a raven whose species is constantly attributed to the Goddess of Darkness, Nika's enemy. All this, however, does not explain how Luffy fell out of nowhere from the sky and it only gets worse when not even Luffy knows how it happens. Unfortunately for Law, meeting Luffy is a path of no return and in the blink of an eye his isolated and peaceful life is disturbed by the priest who, after returning to full health, becomes a noisy guest in Law's small cabin. Things get weird when Law's wings start to grow back, white instead of black, at the same time that Luffy also starts to change. For worse. His health simply declines and his magic grows and becomes out of control, becoming a danger to everything around him, excluding, in some way, Law. Desperate to understand and help Luffy, Law begins his journey out of seclusion toward the capital's temple, where Luffy is said to serve as a priest. But dragging a time bomb in the shape of a man all the way to the capital is not simple when you are alone and Law has no option but to accept the growing number of people who seem to be drawn into Luffy's orbit and who decide to accompany them on the journey

Now that I’ve seen your tree post, I have to ask:

Assuming you at least know your tree species better than I do, which trees would you assign to which characters?

(No one in particular—just the ones that come to mind.)

That post has resolidified two universal constants of this blog.

One: everything is canon.

And two: you all think there are way more thoughts going on in my head than there really are.

I confess that I haven’t actually considered what trees would belong to what character/alt modes. This is much more of an aesthetic au grown from my love of Irish folklore and nature in general.

But, now that a few of you have asked what trees I would assign, I'm thinking about it

Right off the bat I think I would make Optimus a weeping willow, for no reason other than I think it's very poetic and I've always pictured a willow tree as a very protective, sheltering tree that hides secrets. And I also think that Optimus is a little bit of a sorrow-felt character (read: a lot. a lot of sorrow actually).

Megatron immediately feels like he'd be some sort of choking vine. Ivy, perhaps. Because while I did say trees in the original post I'm not going to limit myself to it. And frankly, trees aren't even a real thing. They're just a word/category we've assigned to tall, wooded plants. Palm trees, for example, are more closely related to grass than like,, an oak tree or pine tree lol.

I like the idea of all the medics being different types of medicinal plants. Cedar, birch, or oak would be a good fit.

This isn't a character per se (though more and more it feels like one to me) but I like the idea of the allspark/matrix being the mycelium network. The idea of a parasitic mushroom colony giving Optimus commanding thoughts and wicked nightmares is really compelling, and you know I'm already a sucker for the parasitic matrix head canons.

grian is a sleep demon, existing in the dreamscape, able to manipulate dreams and thriving on giving people nightmares. he meets scar in a dream, immediately intrigued and amused by his reactions, and he keeps coming back to him. scar, despite all the nightmares being thrown at him, catches a glimpse of his perpetrator, and grows curious in turn. they start talking, everything eventually culminating into a ritual and a summonning circle. grian, in the waking world, needs to learn how to exist somewhere where he can get actually hurt, and come to terms with the fact that he has locked away memories and trauma.

(If it wasn't clear yet, this is one very dark, very heavy, very human story. There's love and so, so, so much despair. Things go wrong and then worse.)

a town half-submerged into the sea. the upper half is reserved for humans, who are seen as better, richer, the posh and the nobility. the lower half, the submerged part, is slum-like, reserved for seafolk, seen as lesser. many seafolk learn to live on land, to improve their standing (not necessarily living situation; they do need water). mumbo lives amongst the nobility. scar lived his whole life in the sea. grian, even though he belongs to the seafolk, lives on land. mumbo's best friend, forever trying to be something he isn't.
