I've seen this post circulate quite a bit. There are many meanings to it. For me it's akin to surveillance of an injured person or a disability claimant. In the early 80's insurance companies in the USA started to hire private investigators to try and nail employees lying who were collecting disability benefis. The practice spilled over to personal injury litigation and now today - insurance companies may put surveillance on seriously hurt suffering victims on occasion to try and discredit them and lessen the amount of money they will pay you. Digital surveillance is the cheapest and by far the most effective. there was little opportunity these days for some fun. or, well, there had been little opportunity for some fun. back when it was the end of the world every other ( day ) year & seeking anything other then the dredges of survival seemed like a joke; one well worn out. now ( stuck here, working through residual anger & the burning want the mark would sing in the dredges of his mind in tunes of swirling violence — almost matched ignorance. the expectations of a hookup from the less inclined to such banter ) dean was forced to accept there wasn’t some miracle answer to how he ended up stuck in such a place. this city a new form of permeance; the longer he was here the less it seemed like a bane & more & more like a boon ( no one, then, who knew to many details about who & what he was, demanding changes he didn’t have the energy to chase. no world to save or people to hover over. what once would have been terrifying now the lost flutter of hope ). a casual, quiet, & friendly banter for no reason other then to enjoy himself wasn’t something oft found in his — current — repertoire. he wasn’t a young twenty something chasing ghosts & bar hopping anymore.

it was fun, finding himself back in the saddle of a skill left to atrophy.

a ( what sam would have misjudged ) friendly smile, banter drenched in lost laughter. seeing her face again was unexpected but welcome amongst the bustle of the coffee shop — the hunter’s own drink cooling, mostly forgotten, at his elbow. dean really didn’t find it in himself to care & burst the warmth slowly growing all to distracting ( it had been to long since he had made a friend, huh ? would have been silly in hindsight to get this excited over an otherwise passing acquaintance but that would be a repercussion for later ).

he was in rare form, truly.
