Who is Tyr?

Tyr, or Týr, is a Norse god and member of the Aesir associated with justice, the law, and the formalities of war. He is also the guardian of oaths, treaties, and contracts. In interpretatio romana he is equated to the Roman god of war, Mars. His most well-known role is in the story Gylfaginning where he loses his arm. To some, it is this story that has earned Tyr the title of the bravest Norse god.

Tyr’s most popular story, Gylfaginning, tells of the deal he makes with Fenrir. Only Tyr was brave enough to approach Fenrir in order to feed him. This created a kinship between the two.

The gods tricked Fenrir by telling him that the various chains presented were testaments to his strength, and they congratulated him with cheers when he broke through them. Eventually, they presented the impossible chains made by the dwarves. Suspecting trickery, Fenrir demanded that, as a sign of good faith, one of the gods place their hand in his mouth as the chains were placed on him. Tyr stepped up to this task. As soon as Fenrir’s suspicions were verified and he realized he couldn’t break free, he bit off Tyr’s arm.

It was said that the gods laughed at the trapped wolf, except for Tyr.

Tuesday comes from Týsdagr, or “Týr’s Day”.

The name “Tyr” comes from Old Norse Týr which means “a god” or “the god”. Old Norse  Týr, Old English Tiw, Old High German *Ziu, Gothic Tyz, Proto-Germanic *Tiwaz, “god” (Orel, Vladimir. 2003. A Handbook of Germanic Etymology. p. 408.)

Tyr is not the only god involved in war, Thor and Odin are also known as gods of war, though they reigned over three different aspects of war. Tyr is the law and justice, Odin is wisdom, and Thor is more brute force.

Tyr’s name is the namesake for the Tiwaz rune, ᛏ, representing “t”.

During Ragnarök, Tyr’s death was supposed to be caused by the wolf Garmr whom he would kill at the same time.

Tyr may be linked to the Proto-Indo-European deity *Dyeus the god of the daytime sky as well as a deity of justice, though nothing links Tyr to the sky in mythology.

Tyr is said to have a grandmother with nine hundred heads.

No. Garmr's reply came swift and blunt in Venix's mind. I told you before we began, my memory of the times before we bonded are hazy, we are working with half remembered diagrams and circles, not the work of an expert magus.

Venix frowned as he continued carving symbols into the stones. On nights such as these, with both moons full in the sky, blanketing the land with aether, it was supposed to be possible for even a novice to pull creatures from the beyond the barrier. All one needed was the correct glpyhs to draw the aether in and the circle would begin to work on its own. It was one such creature the two of them were hoping to lure. This region had been plagued by an Outsider since midwinter, and Venix had been hired to deal with it. Despite searching for a week he'd barely found a trace of the supernatural creature.

Now, approaching his wits end, he and Garmr had one last idea before giving up. His sword recalled having seen summoning rituals in the past, during its time with its first wielder, but could only recall fragments of what it had looked like. Still, it was more of a lead than they had before, and if it worked, the two of them hoped that it would draw in the nearest Outsider before pulling in one from beyond the Barrier. Then it would be a simple matter of slaying the demon.

I think that's the last one. Venix sat on the ground, back and knees aching from crawling in a circle around their prepared summoning sight. It was a crude trap, Venix had never worked with glyphs like this, and he was certain a practiced magus would chide him over how rough his circle was, but he didn't need it to be a work of art, just functional for long enough to bring the Outsider to him.

You'll need more practice if we ever want to try this again.

I'm hoping we never have to. Venix replied. His eyes on the gylphs in front of him, waiting expectantly for a sign that they had begun to function.

Then perhaps we should begin working with a mage, somebody trained in this sort of-

Something's happening. Blue-white light was beginning to pool into the first of the glyphs. Aether was gathering just as they'd hoped. Venix rose to his feet, taking Garmr's sheathe off his back as he watched the glyphs begin to activate, a circular wall of light rising from the ground in front of him.

That's so nice of you to say, I'm extremely flattered you've enjoyed my stuff!! Currently I have a few outlines, although I'll admit that I haven't been as engaged in Lucemond and I was a few months ago (mostly bc I've gotten busy, and other fandoms/ships have taken up my attention, mostly CoD + Mortal Kombat). To my memory, in the the roster of unfinished Lucemond outlines there was a Hades-Persephone AU, the High School She's All That AU but formatted as an actual story for ao3, and a Lucerys/Dalton shipwrecked one? I think?? I've got no concrete plans tho and no idea if/when I'll get to them. I've got the Miracle Wife up on ao3 rn, and for the near-future that'll probably be my only Lucemond fic for quite a while.

I've been reading a bit of Jacegan recently tho and it's got me feeling a kinda way tho? Currenly reading Hermit by Garmr on ao3. I suspect that upon season 2's release, there'll be a good uptick in content for those two, so I'm keeping an eye on it.

I've got a lot of Rhaenicent art planned at least!! Maybe I'll get into writing for them if I end up including blurbs + the art and I get carried away, we'll see. We definitely need more content for them, and in my mind I write many essays for them bc they just occupy my head. They are sooo in love, they hate each other they resent each other they want to be each other, the timeline is Bad because they are not together, etc. and the way that the show has adapted their relationship to smt wholly different from the books was, in my own opinion, something soooo interesting and at least worth exploring, regardless of iffy-execution. They are the real love story of the show, their foundation is the catalyst for what comes next. Alicent is so great, she is so miserable and hypocritical and she's a victim and a perpetrator all at once. Rhaenyra is perpetually misunderstood, she is girl and warrior and mother and queen and a martyr while also the biggest chasm in so many people's lives. she is forgotten and misconstrued but never erased. they are womanhood, in the context of wealthy white women. i want to draw her in a million outfits. ugh i cannot stop thinking of her.

I did little carving recently of the Norse god Tyr out of a bit a of redheart wood. Tyr “is a god in Germanic mythology, a valorous and powerful member of the Æsir and patron of warriors and mythological heroes. In Norse mythology, which provides most of the surviving narratives about gods among the Germanic peoples, Týr sacrifices his hand to the monstrous wolf Fenrir, who bites it off when he realizes the gods have bound him.
