29. Ghost Speak AU
This is a ghost speak AU where (most) ghosts only speak ghost speak (they cannot make sounds resembling human) and Danny has had to adapt to the reality he is not able to speak English as a ghost.

I love me some eldritch, incomprehensible ghost speak in fics, but in my heart ghost speak sounds like a theremin being played.
Like, it's one of those instruments that can sound so much *like* a human voice, and sound nothing like one all in the same song. It can make kind of chipping noises, it can make some truly horrifying sounds. It can be beautiful, it can be creepy, it's peak ghost speak to me
(Also just love the idea of people playing the theremin at ghosts to join the ghost speak convo being like the meme of when people meow to their cats, but like are saying "taxes" or "ketchup" in response to "hi" lol)
Anyway please juat imagine Danny & the other ghosts sounding like this while they talk/fight:

I’ve seen people talk about a Batfam fanfic troupe where the family communicates through chirps, trills and whistles. This sounds amazing but what if this was a DP x DC crossover??
I have a feeling that since most of the Batfam has been exposed to / dunked into Lazarus pits; which is basically just corrupted ectoplasm…
Does that mean they’re technically using ghost speak without knowing, and all of a sudden Danny comes in and understand them completely
———
Examples:
(Any Batfam character (most likely Jason)), using special chirp language: *swearing*
Danny, hearing ghost speak: “hey that’s not very nice to say to someone!”
(Jason??), muttering in English: “what the Fuck?”
Danny, looking out the windows of the Watchtower: *chirping, trilling and thrums saying ‘space! So cool! Want to go out there. Explore!!’*
Batman, keeping a straight face even though he now wants to interrogate how Phantom knows the Family’s secret language: ‘hmm’

Prompt #26
Ever since the accident, Danny couldn’t stop speaking in this strange language that sounded like glaciers cracking and thunder booming and fire popping. Unable to speak English, he stays silent as long as he can.
Until one day his parents were ranting their hatred towards Phantom in front of his face and he just couldn’t take it anymore, so he snapped at them about how Phantom is just trying his best and they should leave him alone, though not in English.

Prompt 23?
DPxDC merfolk-esqu Au where the Infinite Realms is akin to a giant ecto-ocean. Ghosts look similar to merfolk, though some more deep-sea esque or alien while others look more human. Some look more human when in the living realm (unless summoned) while others don’t change.
This also shifts to ghost-speak, which is similar to things like whale calls mixed with dying screams and other echoes of their deaths. The crackle of a housefire, the rumble of electricity, the crackle of breaking rocks, the crash of heavy waves. It’s a beautiful but haunting song.
Danny, being a Halfa, can of course shift between human and ghost, but this has resulted in his ghost form being only the slightest bit humanoid while his human form looks too human. Too perfect, almost fae like while his ghost form looks like some sort of galaxy-esque deep sea creature with hands and a torso.
This is a bit of an issue when he ends up chasing one of his rogues out of Amity and runs into people who don’t know about ghosts. Who in turn call the heroes about the two monsters fighting in the fields.

Danny slowly starts to use more and more Ghost Speak. First it's just a word here and there and doesn't cause much trouble — it's mostly an annoyance at school when people look at him weird all of a sudden and he realizes that he made some strange sound instead of whatever he actually meant to say. With Tucker and Sam it can even be fun — they can probably pick up the meaning of at least a couple of the more common noises, and the trio can sort of treat it as their own secret slang.
But then it starts to happen more. And more. Maybe Danny learns to catch it, to think a little longer before he speaks, maybe to even drag out the first syllable and glance at Sam or Tucker or Jazz to see whether it's coming out in English or eldritch. Slowly he realizes that most of his dreams are in Ghost Speak now, his mother's voice whooshing like wind between winter trees without him questioning it until long after he's woken up. His enemies start to have stronger reactions to his puns, and his friends — he doesn't really do puns with his friends anymore, does he? He recognizes the openings for them, every now and then, but when he tries to voice the joke he had thought was on the tip of his tongue... it doesn't come.
He starts taking longer to respond in class, in conversations, needing a moment to translate his thoughts. Because, as he's now realizing, slowly and with dawning horror (Why horror? It's just a language), he thinks almost exclusively in Ghost Speak now. He tries to force himself to switch to English sometimes, but it's starting to feel as unintuitive as Spanish homework. It's like he's frantically grasping at something that is already drifting out of his reach. He's surrounded by English-speaking people, English media, the English language — surely it's not that easy to unlearn your native tongue when you live in it?
One day, his dad surprises him by asking him how his day has been. Danny quickly tries to remember events he can talk about without the risk of revealing his identity, then opens his mouth... and realizes that he doesn't have the words for any of it. He racks his brain for something simpler, anything, even just a single adjective — how do you say "I'm fine"?
Danny smiles and shrugs.
He starts bringing the Ghost Gabber to school.

Iewuukaubweenz
AO3
@jaybirdscall
.
Footnotes at the bottom!
.
“Iewuukaubweenz,” said Danny, smiling toothily at the tour guide.
“What was that?” she asked.  “I wasn’t quite able to make it out.”
“Iewuukaubweenz(1),” repeated Danny.
“Ignore my brother,” said Jazz.  “It means good morning in one of the languages he’s studying.”
“Oh,” said the guide, smiling, “that’s wonderful.  Preparing for college?”
“It’s just a hobby,” said Danny.
“What language is it?”
“Oiwawu uno Yinis(2).”
“Well, it’s lovely.  Ah, I think that must be everyone…”  The guide stepped away and started to do a headcount.
“Don’t make me regret bringing you,” said Jazz.
“Oh, you should have done that long ago, nu(3).”
“Nuuhuueiwee, uu iiuuni yinis, uzue(4)!” snapped Jazz.
“Your pronunciation is a little off, there.  ‘Don’t forget’ should be ‘nuuheiwee,’ since ‘eiwee’ starts with a vowel.”
“You’re insufferable.”
“Wibli i iiuuni eulmau noo iitsetu(5)!”
Jazz groaned.  “Please, just don’t scare off any of my potential future classmates.”
“I make no promises.”
“Danny.”
“I won’t do anything on purpose,” said Danny.  As annoyed as he was to be here, he didn’t want to tank Jazz’s social life from the start.  “But you know how things are.”
“Yeah, I know.  Uu iiuuni(6).  But you could be helpful, too.”
“That sounds like a jinx, honestly.”
“Danny.”
“If you look at it from a certain perspective, it’s like I’m helping them.”  And Jazz, too, because most people would run for the hills upon being presented with the elder Fentons.  Crummy friend material, if you asked him.  Which people usually didn’t.
Jazz gave him a look.  It was a remarkably effective look.  He crumbled.
“Fine.  What do you want me to do?”
“Well,” said Jazz, “when people ask why you’re here, I want you to let me explain that you speak over a dozen languages fluently and that I brought you here so you can look at the language, anthropology, and archaeology options.”
“But,” said Danny, “that is why you… Oh.”
“Honesty is sometimes the best policy.”
Danny squinted at her.
“Look, you’re the one going around showing off ghost speak.  At least stick to Latin or something?”
“Ihi Yinis nyoobli wutish(7)!”
“And maybe stick to English unless someone asks?  Maybe?  Like, it’s kind of weird when someone who isn’t, you know, Spanish or Mexican or something starts a conversation off with hola, right?”
“I guess.  But I am a native speaker of Yinis.”
“Danny.  You have a utwueeeweustee(8).”
“Your pronunciation is still off.”
“Give me a break, here, I’m not sure if you can pronounce things in Yinis correctly unless you’re a native speaker.”
“Native speaker?” asked a young man behind who had crept up behind them.  “What are you a native speaker of, if you don’t mind me asking?”
“Oh, it’s Danny that’s the native speaker,” said Jazz, spots of color high in her cheeks.  “My little brother.  I’m hoping he’ll be interested in some of the language programs here at the university, if he gets to see them.”
“The language is super rare, though.  Not very many people speak it at all.”  Well, all of the dead, but that didn’t count.
“Mind saying a few words to me?  I’m a bit of a language buff myself.  Maybe I can guess it.”
“Noo iileihush hii u ib eunti aawee(9).”
“Yinis!  Noo ieku iiiwoo, noo u hib euwi einu ihwuu muueu(10).”
Danny’s mouth fell open.  A sideling look at Jazz revealed that she, too, was slack-jawed.
“Hii huuyeu yihi, iim.  Wuicheuu(11).”
“Ur hii(12)!” exclaimed Danny.
The tour guide clapped her hands together.  “Now that you’ve all got a moment to get to know one another, let’s start!”
.
Danny and Jazz kept an eye on the young man all through the tour.  Neither of them were quite sure what to do with the fact that a… Ghost?  Human?  Someone who knew how to speak ghost was here, at the college with them.
“All right!” said the guide, “here’s the student union and our food court!  Let’s meet back here for the second half of the tour in one hour!  Okay!”
Everyone nodded, murmured, or cheered their assent, and scattered.  Danny and Jazz made a beeline for the maybe-ghost.  He had staked out a lonely table in the corner, as if waiting for them.
… Actually, that was probably accurate.
Jazz slid into the seat right in front of the maybe-ghost.  “Before you two start talking, I want you to know I’m not fluent.”
“Of course not,” said the young man, “I wouldn’t expect a winoo(13) to be.”
“So you are…?” Jazz said.
“You can call me Roman,” he said.  “But, for what you were actually trying to ask, yes, I am a ghost.”
“Your disguise is really good,” muttered Danny.
“Yet not, I think, better than yours.  It’s practice.  I’ve been in academia for a while.”
Jazz sharpened.  “As a student?  Isn’t that a bit unethical, considering that there are a limited number of admissions every year?”
Roman laughed.  “Not really.  I’m a ghost student, so to speak.  I don’t really show up anywhere officially, people just remember that I’m where I’m supposed to be.”
So, unethical but in an entirely different way.  “You just… go to school?” asked Danny.  “That’s what you do with your… life?”
“What’s better than learning forever?” asked Roman with a shrug.  “They say you’re not really dead until you stop doing that, and intend to demonstrate that idiom.  I do move around, though.  This is my first time at this university.  But speaking of that…  You must be a lover of knowledge as well, to scout out this place for your afterlife.”
“It’s not like that.  I’m just here because of Jazz.”
“You really should think about what you want to do when you graduate, though.”
Roman cleared his throat.  “As presumptuous as it may be… If you do determine to further your education, I will be here for the next several years.”  He reached into his vest-pocket and pulled out a small, pale green business card.  “I can show you the tricks of the trade.  How to blend in, even if you look, and feel, out of place.”
“Go ahead and take it, Danny,” said Jazz, nudging him.
“I don’t know,” said Danny.  “It’s not really…”
“You can always throw it away later,” said Roman.
“Alright,” said Danny, plucking it out of the ghost’s hand.
“Excellent.  Now that we have that out of the way, what major are you taking, Miss…?”
Jazz blushed.  “I’m Jazz.  Psychology and pre-med.”
“Hm.  I was planning on sociology this year, but that’s not set in stone.”
Danny stood up.  “I’m going to go buy lunch.”
He did not need to watch Jazz flirt with a ghost.  Another ghost.  Jazz… seemed to only flirt with ghosts.  And guys like Spike.
Oh, ew, Danny did not need to know about his sister’s preferences.
Did Mountain Dew work as brain bleach?  Yuck.
Or, as ghosts would say it, nuekawuhuu(14).
1 - Good morning.
2 - The language of Yinis (also called Old High Spirit)
3 - Sister
4 - Don’t forget, I know Old High Spirit, too!
5 - Now you know how I feel!
6 - I know.
7 - But Old High Spirit is fun!
8 - Secret identity
9 - I doubt you have heard this one
10 - Old High Spirit!  I must say, I have not heard that in many years.
11 - You don’t look dead, though.  Very impressive.
12 - Neither do you!
13 - Human
14 - Gross

An incomplete list of sounds in Danny's ghost speak
-excited teenage murmuring, the sounds of goofing off and shoving each other, quiet laughter and egging each other on
-those same teenage voices, frantically talking, speaking over each other, begging, desperate and confused
-screams. two teenagers screaming in horror (danny's own scream is reserved for his Wail)
-quiet sighs, disappointed muttering, it-didnt-work and so-what-now
-electricity crackling
-the sounds of a machine whirring to life
-the sound the portal made as it ripped a hole between dimensions (one of those sounds that can't be described in words)
-a quiet, rattling gasp of air
-cautious words, voice full of doubt and i-dunno-guys, this-feels-dangerous
-the squeak of latex and rubber rubbing against each other
-the quiet slap of a gloved hand slamming against the wall a button
-the thud of a body hitting the floor
-complete silence, with all other sound filtering out, the realization of oh-we-fucked-up
-excited muttering, manic laughter, the dissonance of awful things planned in cheery tones
-the sound of boots hitting the floor as hands shuffle through boxes of inventions enthusiastically
-a quiet scuffle, the sound of a booted foot catching on something and sending someone pitching forward
-hammers clanging, saws buzzing, screws and tools hitting the floor from the tables they're knocked off of

Clockwork's Odyssey
After far too long, it is my utmost pleasure to bring to you the fanfic I have been working on all summer for Invisobang 2023: "Clockwork's Odyssey!"
Synopsis: Several weeks after the events of “The Ultimate Enemy,” Danny begins to starve from a ghostly hunger that seems impossible to sate. To his surprise, Clockwork appears with a proposition: join him on an adventure into the Ghost Zone, which will provide the nourishment he needs. Danny accepts despite his better judgment, but as they descend into places where time and reality seem blurred — and where Clockwork’s secrets come to light — he begins to wonder what kind of nightmare he got himself into.

If you like Lost Time, then this is the fic for you. ;)
This year, I was partnered with the absolutely incredible artist @andre93a, who created an astonishing cover image for my fanfic. Thank you so very much! It was unreal to be paired with someone of your skill!
I also received so much help from the wonderful @underforeversgrace, who beta read the fic and listened to me scream about far too many things. Thanks for helping me keep my sanity while somehow also keeping yours.
And a huge thanks to @bibliophilea, @kinglazrus and @strawberrycamel for making Invisobang 2023 a thing and keeping it running! It was such a blast to be part of it, and I'm so, so thankful for all the friendships I made along the way!
I'll be posting deleted scenes and author commentary on my blog in the time between chapters, so make sure to check me out over at @astatia-ghast.
And with all that said -- how 'bout an excerpt?
------
He's so hungry.
He's so hungry, and Amity Park is crumbling.
A gargantuan creak and smash rip the air as the last remnant of the FentonWorks logo crashes to the ground. It lands a few feet to Danny's left, casting great reverberations through the pavement, but he pays it no mind. He can't, really; oh, how dearly he would love to pay it mind, but there is only one sensation taking command of his mind at the moment.
Sam is lying inert beneath him, framed by his hands and knees. She has been dead for a while, but Danny hasn't yet found it within himself to halt his cannibalization of her soul.
His wicked fangs hover hardly an inch from her flesh as he draws in deep breaths, struggling in vain to extract the last remnants of her fear and sorrow. He should have stopped drinking long ago, when her spirit had grown dull and her body weak, but just as it had with every other soul in this forsaken city, his hunger could not be sated.
The last drops of the horror she had died with vanish into his maw and seep into his core like water into dry earth. It is done. She has been drained.
And he is still hungry.

Concept: Ghost Empathy and why Vlad is Emotionally Invisible
So, in the DP fandom we all play around with ghost abilities and characteristics, but one of the main fanon things is that ghosts are emotion, they are empathy. Ghosts are ectoplasm which is emotion manifest.
Why, and in fact how, then would Vlad be Emotionally Invisible?
Simple! Repression.
Vlad's half human (at least, personally I love the fanon that Vlad's not a full halfa because he didn't die in one shot) which means that he has more ability to emotionally regulate than beings that are made entirely of emotion. Vlad's also an adult, a billionaire, a politician, and a business man; all things that require emotional control and compartmentalization. Why would that not carry over to his ghost side?
I like to think that Vlad started to feel the ghost empathy, and he was like "cut that shit out" immediately. He walled himself off from feeling anything from other ghosts, which dampened his own emotional signature/projection.
Ghosts, who are beings of empathy, don't feel Vlad. He disappears from their perception if he's not within eye/ear shot or just close enough for his cut off trickle of empathy to reach them, because all ghosts rely on emotions for spacial awareness. The empathy is probably how they can tell if they're getting too close to someone else's haunt.
Danny does the rest, not that he realizes that he's masking Vlad from the rest of the ghosts.
Danny's a teenager and a ghost, i.e. the Most Emotional Being possible. Danny's projecting his feelings everywhere, all the time. So, whenever the ghosts come to Amity to blow off steam and stuff, they come across this fountain of frustration and their empathy goes "ah, upset baby, a good fight will help him calm down." Of course, not realizing that they are the cause of a lot of that frustration.
Once Danny learns what ghost speak/ghost empathy is and what it feels like, his relationships with his rogues get a Lot better, because now he understands! These guys are just looking for enrichment/ a way to let off some steam. Meanwhile the ghosts feel accomplished that the baby has calmed down and started using his words.
But what Danny doesn't understand, at least at first, is why the ghosts seem to believe Vlad, even when his lies aren't that great. Especially when it seems like he never gets anything past them.
It isn't until the next time he fights Vlad and feels how-- empty-- Vlad is that he gets it. Then he catches on, his emotional signature is giving him away.
None of the ghosts take the time to think that Vlad would lie to them, because what's the use lying to the dead? The living, sure, they're easy to mess with because they can't sense emotions, but none of the ghosts ever think that Vlad would cut himself off from the rest of them. He's just got a weak emotional signature, right?
That's also why Skulker doesn't hunt Vlad. He doesn't think that Vlad is a halfa, or if he knows, he thinks Danny is the stronger halfa due to the difference in their emotional signatures, so of course he'd go for the more difficult hunt. (he's right, but only partially because of the empathy)
I also like to think that the empathy is the reason that Danny gains so many new powers and control so quickly (compared to Vlad, anyway, he had 20 years to learn and he's still got fewer powers than Danny.)
Oh! It would also be fun if Danny had, like, a Resonant Core. Like, because he's so empathic he can alter his core to Resonate with the cores of the ghosts around them and copy/borrow their abilities. He's a halfa, and still growing, so his core hasn't settled and won't settle fully until he's Full Dead. (at which point the boy has an Officially Recognized Resonant Core, which means he is Certified Terrifyingly Powerful and it's a good thing for the Infinite Realms that he doesn't want to be a despot.)

Part 1. Something's Wrong With Danny Fenton Vol. I | Chapters: 6/6 |
Danny Fenton. The enigma of Casper High. It's the first day of the winter semester when she notices him. She notices him for what feels like the first time. Maybe because at this point he's the only alternative kid other than her. Or maybe because boom, there he is: the locker next to hers. -- A No One Knows AU where Danny transfers from a different school to Casper during Junior year and ends up befriending Sam and Tucker.
Part 2. June | Chapters: 1/1 |
“Just keep them away from me,” she says, quiet. “I don’t care how. I just want to be alone.” He doesn’t press. She feels like a dam held together with toothpicks and tape. “I promise…” He leaves a space where a name should be. She looks at him and he can feel her sloshing. “They named me June.” -- Danny made a promise to protect her from the living. He intends to make good on it. (An aside from the first volume of Something's Wrong With Danny Fenton.)

Is ghost language a real thing in DP or did you/the larger fandom invent it?
We/the fandom made it up!
In fact it was the first ever post I made on this blog. It started with this post going around (dug this thing up from the depths of 2013) of people making fun of the completely gibberish writing on Danny's essay. And that last addition with the "speak English not Ghost" got to me so I literally made this account (I'd been lurking on a different account my schoolmates followed) and made this post
I then fed into it heavily with the Ghost Speak series but also people came up with a ton of random fandom content for it.
