Hearthbound gives you a new inclusive faction and multiple levels of intrigue to add to your Werewolf: the Apocalypse tabletop! Long kept beneath the heels of the Garou Nation, Crinos-Born and Kinfolk have found solidarity in supporting each other and have turned out en-masse to demand disruptive change from their Tribes.

Inside Hearthbound is a peek into the birth of a new kind of Tribe that venerates the ideals of Shantar, a patron of inventiveness and creativity and keeper of The Loom. They are taking a critical look at the heart of the Garou Nation itself. Long sold on the lie that Kinfolk cannot care for Crinos-Born children, an awakening is happening within the Nation, where the families that raised these Garou realize what they are doing to their Crinos-Born. This sparked a movement to help Crinos-Born, who sought a means to escape their Tribes and Septs. 

These Hearthbound, beholden to the people they love, act as judges of those Garou that abuse the Litany to systemically oppress each other. They are ambassadors to the spirits on behalf of their kin, Nannas to the Crinos-Born they help free, and Sorcerers capable of blending into societies and rewriting the Pattern Web.

There is a deep hurt within the Garou Nation.

The Hearthbound have risen to protect those oppressed voices that have existed at the edges of The Nation for millennia. The background and rules for creating a Hearthbound up to Third Rank!

Hearthbound was created with queer, trans, and disabled werewolf players in mind. I always loved the setting but never felt the game held space for queer and disabled folk, and 5th edition even less so.

A supplement that fits into this world does not pretend the bad never happened. This isn't to say the bad should be erased (indeed, that's worse in many ways) but rather is something that was, since 1st edition, something meant to be presented as antagonistically bad to social progress and meant to be confronted by players. However, this intent was very poorly conveyed, and a few too many people saw the bad stuff and took it as gospel for how they ought to behave in the world.

Hearthbound is my first step towards driving home the point that players are supposed to be confronting the Garou Nation and not celebrating and reinforcing the status quo.

I've gone through the intense emotional labor of reviewing the old books line by line to distill both the public and private faces of each Tribe and have categorically laid out the open cultural wounds that exist within each Tribe. The old books always used their literature to progress the world canon, and this aims to do just that. To pretend these problems didn't exist in the writing is disingenuous.

For those who found deep problems in the game but always wanted to play Werewolf to directly confront these things, Hearthbound is dedicated to you specifically.

And because I don't think inclusivity should have a price tag, I've made this supplement free to anyone who wants to challenge the status quo at their werewolf tabletops.

Wrote out a thread on twtr about this and thought maybe I'd share it here too.

I was thinking about how I like the modularity of pf2e runes, but also the specificity of magic weapons & armor Being A Specific Thing, and resolving that into something that's kinda-sorta like an anonymized version of Destiny 2 catalysts.

1. Magic items have a specific feature

2. Increases in power/maybe adds new effects as you bond greater & greater (or just more & more?) Magical Orb Things to it.

3. Remove Magical Orb Things & put them in something else when you want or need to, to suit a tactical need.

I think that, on instinct, i'd go with "greater & greater" Magical Orb Things rather than just shoving an increasingly large number of Item Coupons into them. So you'd have like Grade 1, 2, 3 "glyphs" you could craft from specific pieces of monsters or something.

One key, I think, would be to award something like 50+% more items than glyphs, and stop awarding glyphs entirely at some point.

Kinda generalizing for the thought experiment, but it would be something like:

* People (thinking/spoken) drop magic items. So you get magic items by fighting against villains & lieutenants.

* Monsters (otherworldly/animalistic) enemies drop stuff you can make into Magic Orbz.

To create more sense of ownership over the Orb Thingies, you could make it so that they tier up by being used, rather than being crafted at a given tier. This has the (possible) downside of narrowing the number of high grade Orb Thingies you could get later in the campaign.

That's only a possible downside because it may be an explicitly desirable feature. The Orb Thingies the party has had for ages are the Most Beefed Up, and so late game they have to make potentially engaging choices about which item gets the coveted Grade 5 Orbs & which can make do with less.

I don’t have direct confirmation, but I suspect the makers of this game were huge taffers.

This game has water arrows, rope arrows, blackjacks, and some symbols that look like glyphs.

Not to mention the setting is a densely packed medieval city scape, chock full of rich lords and dressy barons.

If you like thief, I highly recommend it! It’s genuinely a really fun game, made with a lot of love.

The micro transactions aren’t obnoxious, and there’s not much skinner box fuckery here.

Light is also a main mechanic, hence the water arrow to douse torches.

The game play is card based thievery, and is easy to pick up and learn.

The art is great too! Very lighthearted.

MORE FLORA RAMBLING <3 let's talk about their family & their abilities <3

Flora is the youngest of six. They have two sisters and three brothers.

Their youngest sister, Salome, and their youngest brother, Silas, stay on earth to defend to cycle and take care of humans on their deathbed, ensuring that they make it purgatory so they can be properly guided to their respective afterlife.

Their second youngest brother, Andrew, then makes sure the souls who pass through to Purgatory have a lower-level reaper to guide them down the path of life to either heaven or hell.

Their eldest brother, Noah, and their eldest sister, Abigail, are in heaven, overseeing the cycle as it operates with the Winners, and awarding a select few souls a chance at reincarnation somewhere down the line.

And lastly, Flora's down in Hell, protecting the Sinners and helping them to reincarnate when they have proven themselves worthy of another chance.

Lady Death, Flora's mother, lives in purgatory and mostly stays at the tree of life, occasionally helping Andrew with his duties.

The Pools of Death (usually referred to as just the pools) are small little puddles that Death reapers crawl out of when they're born or when they're coming back from regenerating.

Flora's blood is silver colored, like their eyes. It looks kind of like liquid mercury, though much less solid.

Their weapon, Dusk Moon, is a handy little device which opens up into various different weapons. They tend to favor the scythe, shotgun, and rapier modes, though.

They also have little glyphs they can use to do various things, mainly propell gravity and teleport.

Lastly, their final (and strongest) ability is called Light of Death. Think of it like the silver eyes ability from rwby-- they can vaporize anyone as long as there's nothing blocking their eyesight or the target is making eye contact.

Highlights

It was really neat to see how real designers are always using what they know and what they are good at to influence their design process, no matter if it is a commercial or personal project. It was comforting to me to see that there doesn't always have to be this immense pressure to try something that you don't know anything about, or that you aren't good at, just for the sake of going out of your comfort zone. Although this is useful and can really expand a designer's horizons, it is not always necessary to be uncomfortable at all stages of a design process. Drawing on your interests and strengths is also a good way to create a successful outcome.

The calibre of presentations were top tier - they were engaging and 'guided your eye', and embodied all the tips we go over in class, such as limiting the number of words on a slide.

I was pleased at how this international conference still allowed for freedom of the hosting country to incorporate any necessary traditions or honours that are encouraged in that country. The conference opened with a Mihi and Waiata, which communicated to me that it was important for Alt Group and AGI to create a safe Māori space.

Kris Sowersby's talk was a huge highlight of mine. He broke down a new typeface that his is collaborating on with Johnson Witehira, called Matarongo. It was fascinating to see their process (iteration on iteration on iteration), right from the deep, rich research they did through to the varied typefaces that were created. So many things were considered - lower/upper case, sans/serif, extra glyphs, etc. I found that I gained a whole new appreciation for typography through watching his talk.
