We went on the road to a studio just outside of Lansing, Michigan for this interview. Darren Gibson was joined for the first half of the show by special co-host Jeff Smith from the Grand Rapids Institute for Information Democracy (GRIID.org). Jeff is also the author of "A People's History of Grand Rapids, Michigan." They interviewed Mason City Councilor Rita Vogel about her efforts to have the city pass a day of proclamation for Malcolm X, who lived in Mason for a year and a half. The city council denied the request without comment. Since then, Rita had an ethics complaint filed against her (which was dismissed) and the city is now attempting to stifle free speech from city employees and elected officials. In the second half of the show, Darren was joined by Jack Prince as they interviewed former Mason Public Schools teacher Katelyne Thomas. Katelyne left the district after they denied her request to use materials from a Black Lives Matter approved curriculum to teach Black history. We asked her about efforts to limit teaching Black history across the country, book bans, and the city's racist history that was detailed in James Loewen's book "Sundown Towns." Between interviews, we were joined by slam poet Native Child Brown, who read a poem about Malcolm X. We had booked two different venues for this event and both of them cancelled at the last minute with bogus excuses. We want to thank Peter Clay Productions for the use of his studios and for recording the show for us.

It drives me a little spinny when I see people posting “Why Aziraphale doesn’t just keep his books at home if he doesn’t want to sell them” because it seems to me to so clearly be a riff on real life antiquarian bookshops?
I worked in a used and rare book shop for five years, and have frequented them since I was young, and Aziraphale is like, a type of guy who just exists. An older fellow who refuses to keep his books in any sort of order, neglects to write prices in, opens at wildly varying hours, and by all accounts does not seem to want to be in business at all. The answer I found, by the end, was because many of them were doing it as a sort of retirement hobby. They made enough money to keep the lights on and to buy new rare books to look at.
I swear to you: nobody in the book business would bat an eye at Aziraphale. Especially if his shop had been there for generations. They would assume that the occasional loose encyclopedia plate sale would be enough to make rent, or that Mr. Fell had business and land holdings elsewhere.
And I assume that though he doesn’t want to sell them, he would LOVE a curious browser. Antiquarian vendors often adore it when you ask how to find a rare book, because the thrill of the hunt is often better than actually owning the volume. Anyone can have a private library, but owning a quaint little bookshop is a saucy way to brag and chat with other book lovers, and you can’t put that on your shelf at home.

you all would’ve loved the rendition i saw yesterday.
gavroche and grantaire spent the whole show goofing around.
when eponine fell gavroche tried to run to her side but grantaire stopped him. he held him as she died and once she passed gavroche turned and buried his face in grantaire’s clothes.
after drink with me enjolras tried to comfort grantaire but he pushed him away. instead it was gavroche, who went to his side and pulled him away from the wall. gavroche eventually fell asleep with his head on grantaire’s shoulder.
when gavroche was shot at the top of the barricade, enjolras was holding the front of his shirt. he caught the boys body in his arms as he fell then slowly turned around and handed him off to grantaire. as the fighting raged on, grantaire stood center stage, holding the boy, staring at him. he eventually made his way off to the side where he collapsed to his knees and just held him, shaking his head, shaking gavroche, then just staring at his face.
cannon fire dropped enjolras to the ground and grantaire crawled to his side, begging him to stay. enjolras shoved him to the ground and climbed back up, grabbing a flag. as bullets made enjolras fall once more, grantaire kissed gavroche on the head, grabbed a bottle, and climbed to the top of the barricade. it looked like he tried to grab the flag but didn’t make it. he was the last to die.
these actors were incredible. i spent every scene he was in watching grantaire on the sidelines, either goofing off with gavroche or staring at enjolras. i was delighted at how they embodied these characters and the clear love grantaire had for enjolras. even from the back of the balcony, it was clear where grantaire was staring.
it was my first time seeing the show in person and i hope i have many more opportunities. but i don’t know if anyone will beat them. devin archer and kyle adams were the perfect e/r.

Darren discussed these topics: Nearly a dozen Republicans have announced their run for President with at least three more announcements eminent. Darren went through some of the terms of the debt ceiling deal, which passed both houses of Congress this week. The environment, the poor, and college with students with debt are the big losers in this deal. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) said he would vote no on the debt ceiling deal. He joined 31 Republicans and 4 Democrats who opposed it. Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes was sentenced to 18 years in prison for his role in the January 6, 2021 insurrection. Other members of the group have also been sentenced to lengthy prison terms. Prosecutors are going after money raised through crowdfunding websites by defendants in January 6 cases. The Ottawa County, Michigan Board of Commissioners passed a resolution making it a "constitutional county." And Paramore lead singer Hayley Williams told a crowd at a recent concert that anyone who votes for Ron DeSantis for president is "fucking dead to me." Hammer Time: The private Houghton University in upstate New York fired two employees for adding their pronouns in a work email.
