For all the people who said they wanted Ireland’s guaranteed income for artists program to be copied by the US! Huge caveat, this is NOT the state of New York, it’s a nonprofit called Creatives Rebuild New York, CRNY, which is building upon Covid-relief programs for artists to create and spread a new model of supporting artists, one that focuses strongly on artists from historically marginalized groups.
From the Article:
“A lucky group of artists in New York will get guaranteed income as part of an ambitious pilot program.
The Creatives Rebuild New York (CRNY) initiative has announced that it is spending $43.2 million to distribute monthly payments of $1,000 to 2,400 to artists and other creatives living across the state. Lasting for 18 months, these cash payments come with no strings attached.
Around 20 percent of the recipients work in the visual arts specifically and 62 percent of the entire cohort said they previously had no financial safety net.
The model is intended to provide an alternative to the system of fellowships and grants that artists typically rely on, which tends to be competitive and unevenly distributed.
“We’re thrilled that this program helps artists meet their basic needs, and we are hopeful that Guaranteed Income for Artists serves as a model for larger scale, policy-based solutions in the future,” said Emil Kang, CRNY’s leadership council chair and the Mellon Foundation’s program director for arts and culture.
CRNY is a three-year $125 million initiative of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support artists with guaranteed income and employment opportunities.
The recipients were selected from more than 22,000 applicants according to a weighted, randomized process that ensured the funding was distributed equally across the state and took into account systemic barriers.
This means that 62 percent of the roster identify as Black, Indigenous, or people of color, 51 percent as LGBTQ+, 34 percent as trans, nonbinary, or gender-nonconforming, and 34 percent as caregivers.
“Some months are lucrative and others are not,” said dancer and choreographer Kristen Brooks Sandler, who is a recipient of the funding. “Scrambling at the end of the month to make rent because a gig’s check hasn’t come in the mail yet has become my reality. I didn’t realize how stressful that was until I received this funding. The relief isn’t just financial; it’s emotional, physical, mental, and artistic.”” -via Artnet News, 11/17/22

Free market capitalism is great and all (yes, you read that right; hear me out), but capitalism actually works best when you give everybody a way to participate in it, and not just the people at the top. Check out Milton Friedman’s proposal to make it work better for the underprivileged members of society!

Debbie Wilkerson, after years of fighting bad credit, is on her way to saving for a downpayment on her first home.
She says a guaranteed income pilot program has helped her single-income household get some stability, whereas living check-to-check had left her family without a pathway to owning their first home.
"I don't have to worry any more," Wilkerson said in an interview.
Guaranteed income programs give direct cash payments to recipients in order to address poverty or economic inequality.

Incoming Artists - Guaranteed Income For Artists
Hey, folks! I'm an artist/creator from Minneapolis, and I'm in the extremely early stages of trying to set up a new nonprofit - Incoming Artists. First a little preamble:
I recently had an idea when fretting about something most artists have dealt with - how to reasonably make a living as an artist. It's so difficult to do in late stage capitalism, and often means compromising, sacrificing, or out and out just giving up. But I feel it shouldn't have to be any of those things. The wealth exists in the world, in this country, to allow artists to do art as a career, the main problem is how to get it to the artists. And as AI and automation continue to steal jobs, especially from artists, I personally think guaranteed income is going to be more and more a necessity. That's where this idea comes in. The basic concept is a nonprofit that provides direct, monthly income to artists within specific regions, such as Minneapolis, or St. Paul, etc, starting with Minneapolis, and expanding as and when we can.
If the funding exists for it, my dream would be to build a platform, somewhat like Patreon, but more centralized, and focused on community and charity. Patreon is great for what it is, but getting established there and actually finding the audience for your work is almost a second job. Not to mention, because it's framed in such a reward-for-donations way, for those of us who make physical art, incentivizing subscriptions becomes very difficult.
I'm hoping that this could become a real thing and a way for us to begin shifting our collective understanding and mindset away from capitalism and hyper-individual self reliance, and towards a more compassionate and community focused way of living. I would love it if this could be a step in the direction of universal basic income, or at least a way to get closer to it for artists at least.
I've linked the post to my initial planning document down below, as well as our facebook page, and a contact sheet to fill out for anyone who's interested in being involved and helping me get this ball rolling.
This is still all very early days, and I have absolutely no experience setting up anything like this and am honestly pretty nervous about it all, so if you have even an inkling of what you're doing and want to be involved, I would love the help. 😅
Maybe this sounds like a bit of a utopian dream, but I think if we can even provide our artists with $10 a month they don't have to work for, it's still a step in the right direction, and a success in my book.

Why state-funded Social Security or guaranteed income is a colossal mistake. It should be federal.
I long have favored a federal plan in which every man, woman, and child in America would receive a monthly stipend from the federal government. (Some call it UBI—Universal Basic Income. Others call it GI—Guaranteed Income, or Social Security for All.) A federally funded Social Security for All program was described in a post published seven years ago. Today, that post was brought to mind by the…

LA County's new guaranteed income program is now giving some foster youth $1,000 per month. The program is designed to help youth who have aged out of the system, but many are concerned that the money isn't enough. Critics say that the program isn't guaranteed, and that the youth could lose the money if they don't meet certain requirements. Nevertheless, many foster youth are excited to receive the extra money. It's a big help for those who are struggling to make ends meet.

In the weeks before the cards were handed out, Harvard researchers began texting surveys to participants entered in the Chelsea Eats lottery. From the start, Liebman says he was floored by how deep the economic need was in the city.
“Fifty-four percent of the kids were not getting enough food to eat. It’s heartbreaking,” he said. “I’ve never seen a number like that in the US.”

"Applications have opened for a $42 million guaranteed-income pilot in Illinois, where 3,250 households will be given $500 per month for two years.
The project will provide the "no-strings-attached" payments to residents of Cook County, the US's second-largest county by population. The county, which includes much of Chicago, has more than 5 million residents.
Toni Preckwinkle, the president of the county's board of commissioners, said the program is the "largest publicly funded guaranteed-income pilot in American history." It aims to improve the health and financial well-being of the participants and will also be used to gather data on the impact of such projects.
A bellwether universal-basic-income program in Stockton, California, found that after a year of receiving $500 a month, full-time employment among participants had increased while depression and anxiety had decreased.
"We are confident that by directly investing in our residents — by giving poor folks what they need most, cash — we will have meaningful impact on our communities and create lasting change here in Cook County," Preckwinkle said on Twitter."

When I was in my first job out of college, one of my coworkers died. She was in her 40s and had kids in middle school. It was absolutely heartbreaking. And traumatizing.
That was the worst and most stressful job I ever had. I quit a few months later. I always wonder if that coworker would have lived longer if we had something like universal basic income. Maybe those kids would still have their mom if she had been less stressed about money.

Hamilton, ON, wants to be the best place to raise a child and age successfully. These days, that’s a tall order to fulfill.
But on June 7, Hamilton city council took a major step towards making that vision a reality by voting unanimously to support a Guaranteed Livable Basic Income (GLBI).
The motion, put forward by Ward 15 Councillor Ted McMeekin and seconded by Ward 1 Councillor Maureen Wilson, is proof non-partisan agreement exists for a GLBI.

The government is always looking out for its citizens, that is why they have created guaranteed income programs. These programs offer a minimum income to Black mothers, trans people, and others who need it most. The goal is to help these citizens to live their lives with dignity and respect. The programs are also designed to promote equality and fairness for all.
