okay i can't stop about this movie. I need to talk about Gwen.

Spoilers under cut.

Okay. Gwen's story was so fucking heartbreaking. i can't get over it. There more i think about it the worse it gets.

(It's great. I love it. I love her. It's very much ouch in the feelings department.)

Like. She fucked up real bad, she did, but her story is so tragic and it makes so much sense for her to react like she did. Lost her best friend, watched him die in an attempt to be like her because of injuries she was parly at fault for (what a fucking nightmare of it's own) watched her own father try to catch spider-women for his murder, like that gotta fuck with you so bad. And then? Finally she made a friend again. And then this friend is across another fucking dimension. And more fucked up shit starts to happen. Her own father, that we get showed how much he means to her, how he was her light and pulled her out of her spiralling, he was ready to call her in. She told him who she was and he decided on calling her in. It broke him, that much was clear but she pleaded with him and he just. Called her in. Like. Her last resort, her last island proved to her that he couldn't be safe for her. (fuck the scene broke my heart)

And then more and more happens and she doesn't even can go home anymore because the worst thing that all Spiderpeople fear happened to her - her identity got leaked (or so she thinks). There's a reason why she was so ready to abandon her own world and flee. There was, in that moment, nothing left for her. She's a teenager, a wanted criminal.

(the whole sending her back was super hard to watch, back to a world that had not a single thread of safety for her anymore. Where she couldn't escape, neither in her hero nor her civilian persona. Nightmare)

She appearntly found a refuge with Hobie that took her under his wing (Hobie is the best, whole different thing) and then.

Then.

Then she's getting told she has to let her father die??? And has to let the one friend she really made, she really trusted, she had to let him suffer because otherwise the multiverse would explode? Wasn't allowed to tell him anything? She has to betray him? Like. Every new thing about her story just makes it more tragic. She doesn't have the room for failure anymore and yeah. I think what Miles did to save the Captain was right. But for how desperate Gwen was? That was her new reality. Canon events. She needed to let them happen. That was what she was told, what her safety and her new life depended on. Those were the rules, there was no way around it. What everyone around her, the Spiderpeople that were the only ones around her, believed.

(Again. Hobie. Different story. Have i mentioned that i love him?)

(Fuck the talk with her father? Where she directly said 'you thaught to do things by the book'? It made so much more sense for me why she was so ready to follow those new rules. Because that's what she thought was the way to make it right. And her father then telling her 'I quit'? Essentially telling her 'don't mind those rules'? ugh.)

She's trying so hard and it does something to me to watch her struggle so desperately with everything. She's torn between what she needs to do with no idea what right or wrong even is anymore, and it was so plain how desperate she was to prove herself. How confident she was infront of Miles, how different she was with the elder spiderfolks just a minute later, how much she hides herself behind the mask (hehe get it? Sorry). The way it cracked when she thought Miles had gotten himself killed? My girl abandoned all pretenses, you can hear the panic in her voice.

Like. Among all of the main spiderpeople we interact with? She's also just a kid. With no one in her corner (I'm not starting about Hobie, bc i won't stop lol, that's his own post), she can't even go home. The new people she has, their love is in a way very much conditional.

And yeah i think that if she'd really talked to her friends, talked to Miles about what was going on, much could've been better. But then - what in her life would've told her that to be a good idea? Every experience so far had taught her the exact opposite.

So her last scene there? Where she finally admitted that she did have people in her corner, that there were folks that would help her, when she realized what her arc the whole movie was about?

'I always wanted to join a band. I created my own.'

That was so satisfying.

ᴇ-1610!ᴍɪʟᴇꜱ ᴍᴏʀᴀʟᴇꜱ

Something tells me that he has a lot of girl cousins for some reason, and I think that also influences his knowledge about periods outside of Rio educating him about them. He’s not grossed out or anything by it, but is very well of the severity of the different hormone changes and mood swings, and doesn’t wanna get caught in the crossfire at all.

Amidst the stuff in his room he has a little container of period stuff - pads, tampons, painkillers, the basics - for whenever his female friends, family or girlfriend (if and when he acquires one) come over and aren’t prepared when their periods come on randomly.

He lowkey feels bad when the cramps are hitting you hard because he can only do so much on the outside, yknow? Like he can cuddle you and rub your tummy and try to lull you to sleep, but there isn’t much outside of that that he can do.

If you're cuddling, Miles opts to hold you against his chest while music is playing and he’s on his phone. He knows his dad does the same to his mom and thinks that the same method of action should work universally, and thanks to him, most of the time, with the girls and femme-adjacent people he’s around, it does.

ᴇ-42!ᴍɪʟᴇꜱ ᴍᴏʀᴀʟᴇꜱ

Very similar to e-1610!Miles, e-42!Miles is also one to be knowledgeable about periods and the do’s and dont’s of them. However, I feel like he’s more skittish about the physicality of it all.

Like, he also has a little period kit in his room and it’s much easier to find since there’s not a lot going on and he makes sure to put it in a easy to spot place for whenever female friends, family or partners are around, and he’s comfortable being told that it’s that time of the month for that specific person, but the visual of the blood and the pain makes him squirmish. Which is ironic, given his chosen profession.

I think it's something that, while small and completely unavoidable and integral to the female anatomy, it hits close to home for him to see his mom, friends, family, or partner in pain when it comes to the cramping, the clotting, and the increased times in the bathroom. He feels guilty, like e-1610!Miles, but it’s tenfold now given his own history with being helpless with things outside of his control.

While he’s not good with words, he’ll show his care more physically. Keeps track of the cycle of the important women and people in his life, keeps his kit stocked, and if it pertains to his mom or his partner, wants to go the extra mile and buy chocolates, snacks, and act as a looming presence just in case they need anything (will def say sumn abt them being a ‘cootie monster’ as a joke to lighten the mood, but if you really wanna cuddle him, he won’t put up a fight).

ʜᴏʙɪᴇ ʙʀᴏᴡɴ

Being a friend or a partner of Hobie’s means you’re taken care of, period. Need sanitary items? He’s got a stash of em in his guitar case. Emotional? He’s leaning his shoulder to you already. Cravings? Already walking out the convenience store with his jacket stuffed with your choice of snacks. Just need to sleep? He can get you a quiet, comfy space just like that. He don’t play when it comes to this thing.

At one point you questioned if Hobie knew more about periods than you did, especially your own. The longer you’re around him, the more shocked you become with just how well he can navigate around you during this time of the month.

I definitely see Hobie as the type to want to provide physical comfort and support for your period. Back rubs, foot rubs, cuddles, cradling or rubbing or kneading your tummy to help combat the cramps and the bloating, everything. He even lets you sleep on top of him if it helps with everything. He’d definitely go to sleep with his hands cupping your tummy, thumb running along your skin to soothe your pains.

He’s good at keeping you distracted from the pain by introducing you to some music, putting on your favorite show, or just talking randomly about something that’ll engage your attention.

Hobie acts like your personal nutritionist for your period. Tells you the kind of tea to drink, what fruits to eat, what foods you should make to increase iron intake to make up for the loss of blood. And if you can’t cook, he’ll call one of his mates up to help him whip something up (or, knowing him, he’s got connections, he’ll ask someone to make sumn for you in exchange for something he can do).

ɢᴡᴇɴ ꜱᴛᴀᴄʏ

She hates her own period, so she can’t imagine how her friends and her partner feel. She’s the type to be confined to her room when she’s on her cycle pre-spider bite, however, I’d like to think that post-spider bite, she doesn’t get cramps anymore and the flow is rather light, which makes things great for being a superhero.

Therefore, Gwen takes her own experiences, coupling them with habits and things her dad does, and puts them to use for you.

Next to the dresser in her room is a little four-cube storage unit with bins that hold an assortment of things for you whenever you’re over her place. One bin has all your snacks in it that you generally like to eat, but she makes sure that it’s stocked up when your period comes around. Another has our comfy clothes you like to wear that keep you warm. Another has all the pads, tampons, and pain killers you’ll ever need, and lastly, the heating pad/warm water bottle to battle the cramps with.

Gwen will be kind of a worrywart, especially if she knows that your cramps get really bad sometimes. She’ll hover over you, wanting to help in any way she can, and even if you tell her to back off, she’ll still just kind of like, floats around just in case. It’s all out of love, though. And best believe she won't let you go if you finally invite her to cuddle again.

ᴍᴀʀɢᴏ ᴋᴇꜱꜱ

Homegirl definitely pops in on her folks using her avatar, and I feel like this all the same when those she loves are on her period. She herself suffers from heavy flows and monster cramps sometimes, so she knows a thing or two on how to manage them for herself, and for her friends and partner.

Nutrition plays a big part, so like Hobie, Margo will try to help you out with certain foods and drinks to help alleviate some of the pain and pressure from your period. She even forms a little challenge for the two of you to try out while you’re on your cycles together so that you can try things out and see if they work for you

Ironically, one of her favorite facts is that one can actually sync up with other people who they’ve bonded with over the internet, Since it’s likely majority of her friends are online and that she’d meet her partner through her virtual avatar, she’s not completely surprised when it happened, but more intrigued that it actually is factual

While she also knows that a healthy nutrition helps out big time, don't think for a second Margo won’t open up a tub of ice cream and a bag of chocolates with you and put on a movie to get through the first day of the period blues. Comfort over all is the philosophy that she follows, so if you’re not down for any of that healthy shit, she isn’t either. She’s more than glad to sleep in with you while eating fast food, so long as you’re there for when you two have to struggle to get back on routine lmao

So let’s talk about Gwen for a moment

When you guys started dating, I JUST KNOW that Gwen was super shy.

This woman had only two (2) friends in her life, and there is no sign of a romantic relationship before you, so for her, it was like walking on eggshells

I feel like it takes some time for her to really open up and be 100% comfortable and not super self-conscious.

Due to her complicated relationship with her father and the Peter incident, she tends to be very bad speaking about her feelings, and that can lead to some troubles during your relationship

But don’t get me wrong, she means well!! She loves you, and even if speaking about what she’s feeling is hard she really tries to be good for you

I’m a firm believer that Gwen’s love language is quality time and physical affection, but I’m going to elaborate on quality time a lil bit:

Her favorite moments of the day are the ones she shares with you, she is never happier than when she’s with you

She really likes taking you on dates!!

Most of the time is nothing really fancy like a dinner date or something like that, she enjoys casual dates a lot more

I like to think that she’s a simple girl, her life is a complicated tangled mess, so she really likes to be able to relax, just you and her and that it’s enough

Loves movie dates!!

Most of the time she lets you choose whatever you guys are going to watch because she knows that 90% of the time she is not going to pay attention to the screen at all because she will be looking at you, your little reactions to the movie playing, your little laughs, smiles and confused stares at the screen, she loves capturing all those little details of yourself, so she can imagine them when she’s in a complicated situation and needs comfort

When you guys are alone, she’s all over you

This is Gwen Stacy from Earth-617 and she is the complete badass! This Gwen decided to take the reins of her own destiny and have her own adventures. This lady is simply amazing.

Do you know why?

(Her sass is amazing!)

Because in the comics she simply founded a society of spider women called the Council of Spider Women.

Not only that, do you know what their mission is?

Ensuring the multiverse remains full of possibilities and doesn't fall into dismal patterns. They act in particular for the Gwens, including every Spider Gwen outside ours participates, but I bet that in Beyond she would help Miles by sharing his ideology.

The Spider Women's council is the complete opposite of the Spider Society and as we've seen that Spot is going to… take care of many of its members, it would be a great source of help.

Gwen Stacy headcanons because I love her:

• due to the people of her world greatly disliking spider woman due to the death of Peter (in comics and the movies) when ever she goes to miles or pavitrs world's and receives positive reacts she doesn't know how to react, often backing away from crowds and stuttering.

• Gwen's got a bit of a wonky spider sense as sometimes it just doesn't react to threats and others only slightly before making them hard to dodge l, so she constantly has concussions, though to make up for this her spider sense is powerful in other ways as it will alert her to problems or threats in other dimensions and will guide her places( like it did in the movie).

• Gwen's got a slight biting problem, if she gets stressed she will chew on her hands, or she does it to show affection or will sometimes just do it to annoy people. I also heard canon she had small fangs so it actually hurts when she bites people.

• Gwen is terrified of falling in love with anyone because of her dying in most other universes. She found out about it because Miguel got fed up with her wanting to see miles, let's just say Jessica was furious with him after see found Gwen sobbing in her room.

• when she stayed in Hobies dimension she stayed in a community centre with him and his spider band. She got along very well with mattea Murdock due to originally finding common ground in drumming. She's very comfortable with them as they didn't judge her for not opening up and didn't question her homelessness.

• she's very untrusting of adults even if she's been around them a long time due to constantly being let down and used by them when sees in difficult situations. Rio noticed her discomfort around them after being properly introduced and wants to help her learn to trust people again (I am a believer of a Rio and Gwen friendship).

• after her canon event the first spider from the original group that peni found was Gwen, while Gwen is not great with emotions she tired her best to be there for her. Peni now views Gwen as an older sister figure and tires to help Gwen when she needs it even if Gwen won't accept it.

• Gwen is actually a very unhinged person to be around. But you won't notice unless you've been around her long enough, her diet mostly consists of corndogs and energy drinks. She also has a tendency of not thinking things through.

• Gwen has a lot of scars due to her busted spider sense so Is a bit body conscious even if the other spiders think they make her look badass.

•gwen is extremely touch starved so if she trusts you enough she's constantly attached to you. Whether that be hugging miles or peni, climbing on Hobies back or wrestling with pavitr.

• in her first week in in the spider society she made so many peters cry, though she had no idea why until Miguel told her.

• due to her experiencing kravens last hunt( it's shown when there showing miles the canon events in the movie) she has nightmares of her crawling out of her own grave and will become scared/ uncomfortable if left alone in the dark for too long.

•she is also besties with Margo (anyone who says otherwise is wrong) they talk shit about Miguel together.

Y/n and Hobie have been dating almost since y/n’s first day at spider society. You were recruited after becoming the dancing spider. Y/n was a trained dancer and has always had to deal with people’s shit about her being a plus size dancer and “how much better she could be if she lost weight”, but when she has the mask on its different. She could be herself and people saw her for more than her body. She is such a girly girl too. When Hobie saw her walking around spider society in her pink spider suit and pointe shoes, he was entranced with her and her curves, he was almost under a spell. He couldn’t help but approach her.

“Haven’t seen you ‘round here love”, he walks up next to her like he knows her or something. You look to see his tall, lanky frame next to yours and giggle “No, I suppose not. It’s my first day.” You see how attractive he is and you suck in your stomach. You’re used to attractive guys in your universe being sick heads. He notices and furrows his brows. “What’s that about, you sick or something lovey” you had to admit these names he was calling you were making you feel quite comfortable. His bluntness almost embarrassed you as you tried to think of an excuse, you had been caught. He wasn’t blind, he could tell you are chubby and he knows how society is. He gave you a soft look to let you know it’s okay. This helps you decide to be honest. “Well, I guess I didn’t want to give you a reason not to like me, it didn’t help much though, I’m still huge” you shrug your shoulders like it’s common knowledge. Hobie grabs your chin to look up at him. “Hey, there’s nothing wrong with being bigger lovey. Between you and me and anyone else who wants to know I love curves. The rest was history. He introduced you to his friends, one of them being Gwen Stacy. She is a dancer just like you, super kind, and she’s a drummer. “She’s super cool”, you think to yourself. Unlike you, she is skinny and you notice how excited Hobie is for you two to meet. “You two’ll be great friends”, Hobie smiles.

It’s about two weeks until your birthday and you notice a sudden extra closeness in Gwen and Hobie. Gwen had become one of your best friends but it seems as if she’s been almost avoidant of you lately. She normally stays the night with you and Hobie on the weekends because she’s friends with both of you and you all have a great time. She comes over this weekend and you notice her and Hobie talking more than they are acknowledging you. Whenever you would enter a room, they would find some lame excuse to leave. This really hurt you. As you’ve gotten older and you’ve been with Hobie, you’ve slowly gotten over your insecurities of being “the fat girl”, or you thought until this started. “Obviously Gwen is just like me plus she’s skinny and more punk, maybe Hobie wants something new, someone who isn’t huge and disgusting like me. He probably just doesn’t have the heart to tell me”, you think to yourself and start poking at your body in the bathroom mirror. You breakdown in tears. You hear footsteps from down the hall and try to quiet your sobs.

“Ya alright in there love?” Hobie knocks on the door.

You try your best to sound like you’re not trying but your voice breaks when you speak, “I’m fine”

“No you’re not, imma coming in”

Before you can do anything Hobie opens the door to see you crying in the bathroom floor wearing only shorts and your bra. You’re shaking from crying and how cold you are.

“What’s got ya in here crying for?” Hobie looked concerned

“ I know you don’t want me anymore, I’ll leave so you can be with Gwen”, as you said this, it all clicked for him. At first, he was upset. Why would you think he would do that to you? Did you really think that low of him? Then he thought to himself. He knew you and he knew you had struggled with body image in the past. He knew how your grandma had body shamed you since you were 5 years old. Starting an argument would just upset you more and wouldn��t accomplish anything. Hobie decided the best way to help you is to talk it out instead of getting angry. He knew this wasn’t your fault.

“Baby no. I only want you. I know you get in your head. I know what this is all about..” he grabs your chin so you’re looking him dead in the eyes, “you’re it for me. If you want to know the truth, I’ve been hanging out with Gwen so much because I wanted to plan you the best birthday ever so I can show you what you mean to me”. He grabs your hand and helps you stand up so your infront of him. He hugs you from behind as you’re both facing the mirror and he’s resting his chin on your head. “Look in that mirror baby. What do you see?” He asks you.

“Us and myself. I see my stomach poking out too much and I see you looking fucking hot”you say.

Hobie chuckled at the last bit but then his face turned serious. “You know what I see?” He kisses the top of your head. “I see my future, and you better know that means I love you because I’m not consistent for shit” he spins you around to face him. “I want you to know something babes, every flaw you see, is another reason why I love you. You’re perfect to me. I for one love your curves. Gives me more to love, more to hold, more to cherish.” He gets you to stop crying as his lips crash to yours and you all move to the bed ;)

Gwen Poole vs Gwen Stacy I got really engulfed into the gwenpool comics, I love the goofy-ness of them. After seeing the new spidahman in theaters, I had a similar fondness for Gwen, but for her badass-ness. I was also excited to be able to use my real hair for a costume with minimal changing. My hair dresser had never heard of the new spider man movie or gwen stacy, so I was showing her fan art because I shot the set before I could take screen shots XD

I have... so many thoughts about Gwen Stacy in Across the Spiderverse. God, she's sixteen... she's still a child. A super capable badass teenager who could kick my ass, for sure, but a child.

I can't imagine how terrifying it must have been for her, to have her Dad, her literal father, her main support system after Peter died, point a gun at her and tell her to put her hands up. Like, fuck.

And then she went off with Miguel so she wasn't arrested by her Dad... an improvement, I guess, but... I don't know. I'm really iffy about how stable that situation was for her. Like, even at the start of the movie, Jess made it super clear that Gwen's position in Spider Society wasn't stable, and that one wrong move could send her back to her universe, where she was potentially wanted as a murder suspect and had literally no one she could rely on or trust. Isn't that? Just a bit fucked up?

Also! The fact that Gwen took Hobie's jacket made me wonder -- where exactly is she getting her non-spider gear from? She couldn't exactly pack up her shit from home, and although I'm relatively sure Miguel provided food, water, and housing to the Spider-people working with him, I'm not sure that he paid them for the work they did or was gonna like. Buy them clothes. So... ???? Holy fuck??

I'm not agreeing with her siding with Miguel and the Spider Society, but. It's entirely possible that they were her only source of shelter, food, water, purpose, and MAYBE income??? Like, goddamn.

Anyways! Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse is SO GOOD and I have SO MANY thoughts about it!!! I may even actually write something for it!!!!
