hey guys i just wanted to come here 2 say that i am not doing very well right now

im going to be homeless in a week. living with my boyfriend in his dorm and the school year is ending and so far i have not found a place to live. crossing my fingers my friends will allow me to stay with them, but i don’t really have a lot of options.

my parents are abusers and my mother admitted today that her house is more valuable than my life. i cannot live at said house because i sleep in too late and im not perfectly tidy (I’m not horribly messy—im just not enough to keep their house “immaculate.”) also, i am not going back to people who believe my life is worth less than a fucking house.

i have no idea where ill be going though

my mother also stole 8k from me a year or two ago (i have not recovered since)

i have applied for countless jobs and have heard nothing

150+ metres of tape, an obnoxious number of stripes (you can count, if you want. i refuse to) and around 18 hours of work, we are finally ready to start sewing these pants!

I'll admit anon that I am wondering if you asked this questions on account of the number of times I'm rambled about all the messed up stuff that happens to everyone's (least) favorite weepy monk over the course of the journey XD.

But getting to the point, based on the text of the Anthony C. Yu translation I'm guessing not! At least according to the "canonical" version of the story. To give Yu's words on what happens:

"A few courageous military officials led the captains and guards to rush forward and began hacking away with their weapons. If it had not been for the fact that the Tang Monk this time was not yet fated to die, even twenty monks would have been reduced to minced meat. Fortunately, he had at this time the secret protection of Light and Darkness, the Guardians, the Sentinels, and the Protectors of the Faith in the air. For that reason, the weapons of those people could not harm him."

This scene actually follows a pretty common narrative pattern in Xiyouji that you usually see given to the Monkey King, in which a bunch of well-armed figures try to murder someone else, but the magical might of the intended victim makes them completely invulnerable to all blows. In Sun Wukong's case it is of course to demonstrate just how mighty this monkey is, and it's a possibility something similar was happening here to show the power of the divine/spiritual protection that Tang Sanzang was under. Cool people like @journeytothewestresearch and @ryin-silverfish might be able to speak more about the use of this narrative pattern on a deeper metaphorical and/or religious level, but it could also just stand as a early example of the ever-popular "plot armor" trope.

So that's what I figure when it comes to the og classic, but I could easily see Tang Sanzang getting scars from this and other attempts against his life being something potentially neat to include in jttw retellings! Could be a way to demonstrate the real stakes of the journey if the monk's doing it without his invisible guardians, as well as his tenacity to complete the journey despite all the danger and pain he goes through.

As is, there were some people in the Xiyouji reading group I run @journeythroughjourneytothewest who felt that Tang Sanzang's divine guardians lowered the stakes of the various perils. It's understandable why a lot of retellings would leave them out of the picture, but I've yet to see a retelling that gives him permanent scars for the various brutalities that he suffers...
