Kogure Kiminobu Vs Kaede Rukawa: A microcosm of Singaporean male beauty standards

A reason why Slam Dunk is such a popular anime is because it revolutionised hot guys doing hot stuff that's present in modern sports anime with volatile fanbases such as Free!! and Haikyuu. When it comes to the poster boy of hotness for Slam Dunk, Kaede Rukawa (no glasses) is the king and even overshadowed the main character, Sakuragi. His appeal as the quiet, mysterious basketball ace of Sohoku made Rukawa a very popular character within the series. For example, the very existence of the Rukawa Fan Club proves this. His popularity was also apparent outside of the series, swooning girls who watched this series in the 90's (half of the cinema for the slam dunk movie were middle aged women).

On the other hand, we have the character of Kiminobu Kogure, the quiet, meek and nerdy 6th man of the Sohoku Basketball Team. Unlike Rukawa, his popularity within the series isn't as apparent. Throughout the series, we had him depicted as a strong foundation of the team but was never shown having any luck with girls compared to Rukawa.

Why did I write this comparison? Walk down the streets of Singapore and tell me what you see.

1 IN 5 GUYS LOOKS LIKE KOGURE

It's obvious that the template for Singaporean guys is like this because of the Korean influence from the popularity of Kdramas and K-pop idols, that's not my point. What I am trying to say is that in the span of 20 years or so, what's considered "attractive" in society has been flipped upside down. If you pull up to a barber and ask for the Rukawa haircut chances are you're gonna end up with a shitty ass bowl cut and I'm sorry most guys won't have Rukawa's God given sharp eyes and facial features. It's just easier to look better with the style of Kogure and it's interesting to observe after watching the recent Slam Dunk movie and seeing the dynamics play out.

This is the end of my essay, it's really pointless but interesting to point out and relate it to our everyday lives. I look nothing like either two characters so it's just an average Joe giving his perspective on things.

People undergo heartbreaks, it was a natural occurrence that occurred in people's lives once or even twice in a while. As a result, they discover and make use of various coping mechanisms that would help distract them from the real world; from their pain and from what the pain caused. In some instances, it does individuals good, but in other cases, it could worsen their situation and broaden the pain more. For Jasmine Margaret Mati-ong, a senior high school student advocating for awareness, development, and self-actualization, while coping mechanisms help people divert their attention from their pain, a way to actually deal with your pain is to converse with it. Of course, not everyone is comfortable in facing their fears, what ifs, and pain, but you have nothing to lose once you start asking your pain; where are you from and why are you here?

As a person who aspires to be a psychologist one day, Jasmine Margaret wants to understand people, find out why they behave the way they do, why they say what they speak, and why they think the way they think. In general terms, she aspires to foster mutual understanding between people so they can help themselves heal from the things they don't talk about. She'd like to hear people out, know where it all started, and accompany them throughout their healing journey. She'd also like to let them know that no matter how rough or long the road may be, she'd still walk with them.

Throughout various attempts at finding the right coping mechanism, she realized that books heal, not everyone, but at least her. She loved reading as much as she loved cats. In fact, her favorite novel is Dosage of Serotonin by Inksteady which entails Vina, a psychiatrist, who struggles with managing her financial capabilities to support her family who were deemed to be ungrateful, and Calix, a real estate agent, who fears to face the fact that he failed to become an engineer. After reading quite an amount of novels of differing genres, she figured that reading was a key to a door where she can sit by the window and watch the sky go dark and the sun set, that meant to heal. And to heal means to write, too, because to every thought she cannot speak, she writes. She's also interested in watching shows that depict meaningful concepts that spark a connection to her, examples are Attack on Titan, Demon Slayer, Haikyuu, Kamisama Kiss, Horimiya, and From Me To You.

Enhypen, a K-pop group consisting of seven members that stand out in their own accord, is one of her most cherished interests. Her favorite member is Nishimura Riki or Ni-ki who she describes as the person closest to home; he resembles comfort, peace, and healing. Although she wasn't present in their lives as idols since day one, she wishes to stay continuously as though she entered a gate without turning back, but it's not like she'll ever want to leave the soft and gentle welcome of the group. They make good music as aside from singing and dancing well, their songs also convey an array of meanings that are dear to her, like Shoutout that is dedicated to the connection the group has with their fans, That Feeling When that narrates an individual who can't confess their underlying feelings toward someone, and Just A Little Bit that is about the feeling of being completely in love with someone that their universe is filled with only the person they love. But among her favorites—she has a lot—one will and always stand out, just like Blossom, a ballad portraying the connection you make with people you love and how it makes you grow as a person. To her, Blossom and Enhypen are alike, they were gateways to healing and acknowledging that pain will always exist, and all you have to do is to know that it does. Enhypen is an enlightenment that she never asked for, yet received, because just like pain, healing will come your way.

So to you, who's probably either thinking of everything all at once or nothing at all, it will all be all right. The pain will subside, the wounds will close, and time will tell.

Haikyuu as K-pop idols:

- Oikawa is everyone’s bias. He’s the “perfect” idol, he can dance well, sing well, rap well, he’s charismatic, he works hard, and he’s very attractive so many fans of Seijoh and other groups adore him

- Since Kenma tends to be kinda quiet during interviews and in real life, when he starts rapping (because he’s the rapper for Nekoma) fans often fanchant his name as a way to hype him up since he’s usually quiet

- Kuroo and Suna fan cams are very popular

- Kageyama is the golden maknae (the youngest but also the most talented) of Karasuno and his fandom argues he’s the golden maknae of the whole k-pop world

- Oikawa, Kenma, and Suga do V live’s a lot. Oikawa normally talks to the camera and sings/dances a bit, Kenma usually plays video games and talks to his fans, and Suga tends to cook/bake and then hand out what he makes to his fans at meet and greets

- Everyone loves Akaashi’s signature because it’s very pretty, like calligraphy and he always uses a gold sharpie so it’s unique in that sense as well

- Kuroo wants to be called hyung by his members so they purposefully don’t call him that

- Oikawa, Lev, Suga, Terushima, Ushijima, Akaashi, Suna, and Sakusa are the visuals (best looking) of their group

- Seijoh tends to wear a lot of white concert outfits with harnesses. In contrast, Nekoma wears red outfits with black accents and their fan bases are always arguing over who has the better group fashion sense

- Suga is quite the cuddlebug so whenever the Karasuno group is together you can always find him latched onto someone. Goshiki is the same way and both fan bases are in agreement that it’s absolutely adorable (They’re like Felix from Stray Kids)

- Despite how it might seem, Hinata is an amazing little dancer and probably the best in the Karasuno group

- Karasuno, Nekoma, and Fukurodoni are all quite close and their fan bases get along well too

- Since they’re not allowed to have girlfriends/boyfriends, everyone is very cuddly with their members because it’s the only form of physical intimacy they can have

- Seijoh has weekly cooking lives where they all try to cook as a group and then it becomes a disaster because none of them can cook. The lives are very popular and new cooking fail hashtags trend every Monday

- Oikawa will occasionally lift his shirt to show off his abs at concerts and Iwaizumi smacks him upside the head once the song is over

- Kenma and Fukunaga take naps together so there are hundreds of photos of them curled up like cats and napping all over the internet

- Kuroo and Kenma, Iwaizumi and Oikawa, and Bokuto and Akaashi all purposely flirt with each other so that their names get popular and draw attention to their group

- Fukurodoni smack each other’s butts when they do well at something

not a goodbye, but a new hello!

i think it’s safe to say i’ve stopped writing for bts. (but i still write @qqtxt​ (tomorrow x together), @butterbeerblurbs​ (fred weasley) and @shieldedreams​ (multifandom!))

heyyyyyy guys ;w; this is long overdue but i feel like i should at least write about this haha. i’ve been in and out of tumblr recently and it’s been, oof it’s been AGES. and i’m grateful to all 13k of you that have been here throughout this journey. i still get occasional follows every now and then, which is so heartwarming!!!

but i feel like i should come out and say that i don’t have much interest in writing about bts, exo, or any of the k-pop idols i used to on this blog. [also side note, my url is an-exotic-writer because at the time, exo didn’t have a fandom name and we called ourselves exotics LMAO. and i have too many damned links��to change so we’ll just keep this rolling ok] but this blog will still be up should anyone wants to read anything. (note that all smut/mature content was removed - lmao i had a panic time SOZ)

i guess i started falling out of it like, 4 years ago? and slowly when the community of writers i grew up writing with, suddenly left as well, i just felt like i didn’t belong anymore because there’s so many new writers (oh, just to mention that i think it’s AMAZING there’s so many writers for BTS now, it’s INCREDIBLEEE but i just didn’t feel like i know anyone anymore back in 2014 until 2016 where it was a community where everyone kind of knew each other haha, i mean i fell out of the community and slowly with bts as well).

i still love bts in a way i don’t think i’ll ever love another artist, i still love most of their songs. i just don’t keep up with them as much and slowly that fuelled into my interest with writing with them.

and it sucks, because i do try to write for them but it just didn’t inspire me to write anymore. i still have about a hundred drafts written for them, some drabbles, some blurbs, some fully planned fics that would never see the light of day and that’s okay!!! i’m gonna let go of all of that because i truly don’t see myself continuing anymore and i don’t want to put out anything that’s not with my full of heart.

i tried coming back twice, and even both times i failed miserably. i felt like i couldn’t write anything or even try to when my heart wasn’t there anymore. so i really do think it’s time to let go.

so thank you for the past 3 glorious years from 2014 until 2017, and it has been an amazing ride thus far! i’ll still be active on this account because it’s my main! but i’ll be using it to mostly like and follow other people and... read harry potter fics LOL. i’m absolutely in lOVE with fred weasley so i’ll be writing (mostly) about him over @butterbeerblurbs! and i’m starting to write for chris evans characters (and possibly MCU/tom holland) over @shieldedreams​!

i also noticed this was more of what i really wanted to write about when i had a long (and overdue call) with @astaegmatism / @cno-inbminor. she’s truly my ride or die, someone i’ve met on tumblr and since 2014 up until now, we’re still the best of friends (i’d honestly take a bullet for karebun LOL). and when i had a chat with her about how i feel about not writing for bts and wanting to write for harry potter, hearing her encourage me and say that it’s never too late for anyone to get into something, especially not harry potter, i think it made me like, want to go for it???

the both of us went through a phase of ABSOLUTELY adoring bts. writing about them, planning series together, WRITING TOGETHER, staying up late just to watch them, and suddenly realising we don’t write for them as much, i had to understand that it was okay. i admired karebun when she started writing for haikyuu, and ngl i only read haikyuu fics from her because it’s KAREBUN. (ps she goes by K / Kay, karebun is my nickname for her LOL). so i thought, maybe i could try that with hp. and at least if no one reads them, honestly, they’re my guilty pleasure and that’s how it all started with bts in the first place! :D

so when i created the url for hp, and the url i wanted was not taken, i was like ??? and then i purchased the ebooks to start reading and i was like ??? i actually enjoy reading the book HAHAHA sooooo long story short:

Are experiencing weird symptoms lately? Like you’re giving more attention and thought to a specific boy with a rather crappy attitude? Well, worry no more. Here are the signs that you actually like him. 

You’re waiting for him to approach you AGAIN. At first, it was kinda’ annoying since all he did was get in your nerves, but as time went by, you miss how he was childish sometimes. You miss him just buzzing around you. Even if he seemed like that, he always makes you laugh.

You want to know more about him. Though you pretend to be not listening, in reality, you’re all ears everytime he’s gonna talk about himself to you. It’s not because he’s bragging (well, maybe he is) but you couldn’t help but be impressed not just because he’s good in volleyball but because of the little things you thought he only shared to you like his most embarrassing moment.

You like it whenever he asks questions about you. Your likes, dislikes and it will get deeper and deeper though these questions might come in later after he teased the hell out of you. You couldn’t help but feel like he’s actually interested to know more about you just as you were to him.

You were amazed by how observant he was of your actions and behavior. Like, he really knows the things you prefer, what makes you tick and what you like

Oh! And let’s not get started with how super sensitive he is of your needs. It’s like he’s just pops out of nowhere acting like your superman at the right time whenever you feel sad or need someone to help you. Sometimes, it seemed as though he’s putting your needs first before his making him late for his volleyball practices. It gets your heart all the time.

In speaking of volleyball, you’re excited whenever he’ll constantly offer to teach you. It’s cute whenever he’ll insist to play with you or teach you new techniques. It will not only bring you closer, but you’d also anticipate his invitation for a bowl of ramen afterwards.

You attend his every game. He was so persistent in getting you watch his games and would sometimes resort in childish blackmailing of sorts. You like it anyway, though, because you’d have reason to watch his game without coming off as a mere fangirl. Deep inside, you’re becoming his number one fan.

His fangirls annoy you. This didn’t need any explanation.

You wonder what would it be like to fix his hair. If there’s one thing so notable about this guy, it’s the K-Pop idol hairstyle and sometimes you want to learn how to do that hair and fix it yourself for him. Sometimes, you’d also wonder how he would look like in a different hairstyle.

You love it when his takes pictures of you. Okay, here’s the thing: Oikawa loves to take candid photos of you just to tease you with it. (But we all know he just wanted to have you in his phone and would probably browse your pictures whenever he feels a little bit sad). You love it though and sometimes you were unconsciously giving him your cute angle.

Bonus: Later on, you’d have a secret folder on your phone, which contains all the selfies he sent you.

1. how did you find out about anime? i also watched pokemon when i was younger, but i only really got into anime when i started high school and watched free! and ditf (darling in the franxx 💀)

2. what’s your favorite anime? promare, haikyuu, mob psycho 100, free and beastars are some of my faves! manga wise - i love blue period, jshk and sasaki to miyano ( •̀ ω •́ )✧

3. do you have a favorite J-music/K-pop group/singer? ATEEZ. i swear everyone knows theyre my favourite kpop group 😭 (i mean they have a mesmerising discography and the members themselves are so charismatic and amazing, how can i not i love them sm both as idols and people to look up to). but i also really like twice and the j-group sakanaction.
