My fav Sarah characters and their favorite piece of jewelry (created by me, myself and I since I’m finishing my goldsmith training currently). I tried to color it but messed it up so I hope my description and your imagination is enough 😅
Wilhemina Venable:
Tumblr media
- AMETHYST OF COURSE
- her jewellery of choice would be a pendant
- when she would not feel comfortable she could wear it underneath the neck of her blouses or shirts so she still would know it’s there but wouldn’t feel like she’s showing off
- you chose that piece for her
- that’s why she usually is wearing it with pride
- Wears it EVER. DAY.
- “Can you hand me my pendant y/n?”
- the choice of gold is a solid 18 carats rosé gold
- you chose rosé because you felt like it would look incredible with Wilhelmina’s hair
- And it does!
- the amethyst you chose isn’t the usual very dark and rich purple colour but a very light one
- that makes the amethyst appear almost see through
- the amethyst is known for giving energy and inspiration
- Secretly Wilhemina is incredibly creative especially in drawing but she just shows it to you
- a myth also says that amethysts safe the owner from nightmares which is also pretty fitting for Wilhemina for she gets worked up at night a lot
- It’s the stone of the holy Valentine = February = long lasting love
- “I love you sweet tea.”
Billie Dean Howard:
Tumblr media
- Billie is the queen of pearls
- Her favourite jewellery is a pendants as well
- She got it from her mother
- the gold her mother chose is white gold, classical
- the pearl that is embraced by the 21k gold is a Tahiti pearl
- Tahiti pearls appear grey/blackish
- They’re pretty rare and can just be found on the costs of Tahiti
- one of the darkest pearls costs around 7.350
- Billies mother died when she was pretty young and always used to wear pearls that’s why billie does as well
- “Now you look just like me my little angel.”
- She would just wear that piece of jewellery at the most important occasions for example your wedding
- It would make her feel close to her mother
- “I wish you could be here mom.”
Harriet Hayes:
Tumblr media
- golden ear studs in the shape of a flower
- she got those from her daughter “Flora” which means flower
- a solid 14k yellow gold
- inside are small brilliants
- “They shine as bright as you mom.”
- Flora gave them to her when she moved out
- Harriet always would wear them when she’s worried about her daughter or just feels the need to be close to her
- it’s fits to EVERYTHING so it’s super convenient
- wears it in her free time a lot
- Brags to her friends about it
- “Look what my daughter got me”
Mildred Ratched:
Tumblr media
- hers and Gwens wedding ring
- They had a secret wedding because, well…homosexuality back then.
- That’s also the reason it’s not supposed to look like a typical wedding ring
- The stone is a citrine
- it’s more of a light orange citrin for the rest of the ring is a yellow gold so it separates stone from ring cave
- Citrine = lat. citrus = lemon
- “Just as bitter sweet as you my love!”
- It’s told that the citrine lights up the mood because of its bright colour so people assume it helps with depression and gives the owner a sense of big self consciousness
- “I take you as my wife, for that the sun always shines for you.”

A night of surprises with you
request: request for harriet! you’ve been in a relationship with harry for awhile but this is your first time actually going out to dinner/on a date with her but she’s really nervous because the idea of people knowing she’s in a relationship with a woman scares her so the whole time you’re on the date, you’re trying to distract her and calm her down and in the end, every goes fine and harry’s fear is forgotten :) (if that make sense) @dreamypqulson
WARNING: None
Word count: 700
A/N: sorry for any mistakes or typos!!
Tumblr media
Today was the day you finally found time to take Harriet out on a proper date. The kind of date someone as amazing as Harry deserves. You and Harry had extremely busy schedules, and since you both made it official neither one of you had time for a proper date. So, as soon as you saw on the schedule that Harry had a free night, you immediately made sure you would as well. And now, you and Harriet were in a cab heading towards a nice dinner date you had planned out.
Harriet was sitting beside you shaking her leg out of a nervous habit. You knew this was pushing her out of her comfort zone, not only was this your first proper date, this was your first public outing as more than ‘just friends’.
You put your hand on Harry’s thigh rubbing comforting circle eight patterns in an attempt to reassure her. She looks at you with a timid smile.
“Are you sure you want to do this, Harry?” you ask her softly.
She nods as she turns and looks back out the window to the hustle and bustle of the busy New York streets. Harry thinks to herself, ‘everyone is going to look at us’ she works up her nerves even more at the thought of being stared at in a less than forgiving way. She’s used to being the odd ball out but not in a way such as this.
When you finally arrive at the restaurant, you look at Harry and reach your hand out for hers. She reluctantly takes it as she takes a deep breath to collect herself for her very first date with you.
You both walk hand in hand as you make your way into the restaurant while the paparazzi snaps a bunch of pictures of you both. Harry tensed as she walked into the restaurant, you squeezed her hand. The hostess looks at you expectantly, “Reservation for two under L/n.”
As she leads you to the table she looks back, “You two make a lovely couple.” Harry eyes widen at the compliment and you know she relaxes into herself. You smile as you both take your seat at the beautiful princess sitting across from you.
“You look gorgeous tonight, my love.” Harriet cheeks turn a shade of pink you both grew accustomed to in the past few months you’ve been together.
“Tell me about your day, princess?” you ask your girlfriend to bring her mind back to this moment of your first date; not the worrisome of her anxiety.
Harry goes into detail about her wonderful rehearsal today and you watch in awe at the excitement she has about her career. You could listen to her talk for ages, and never grow bored. The conversation flowed with laughter, giggles and blushes as your date continued with such ease as Harriet started feeling at ease in public. Before you knew it, both of you were back in the cab heading towards Harriet’s apartment at the end of the night. Once you make it to her apartment, you get out and walk around to open up her door to walk up to the threshold of her apartment building. The paparazzi was back at it taking snapshots as you made your way hand in hand. All you wanted to do was give your princess an end of the night kiss, but you never wanted to make Harry feel uncomfortable.
“Well, I had a wonderful date with you, princess,” you say as your eyes are building by the cameras,” I’ll see you tomorrow. Goodbye, my beautiful girl.” You go in for a hug but Harriet had other ideas in mind. Her confidence grew in a matter of moments, and she grabbed you by the collar and pulled you in for a mind blowing kiss. When air became necessary you both pulled a part, “Whaaaa?”
“I love you, Y/n. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Harry smirks as she makes her way into the building.
Your mind is blown, “I-I love you!” Harriet is gone within seconds. You shake her head as you make your way back to the cab giggling to yourself, ‘wow, I’m so lucky.’

Sarah Paulson’s AHS Character Height Headcanons (+ bonus Tammy and Harriet Hayes)
***************
A/N: these are based entirely off of the vibes the character gives off because they are of course all actually 5’7” ish cause Sarah is. But anyway enjoy this brain fart of mine that has been lying scribbled on a piece of scrap paper for months and I found recently and started thinking about again. Also I apologize for the use of feet, I use the metric system usually but idk what height is.
***************
Billie Dean Howard
Tumblr media
I don’t know why but I feel like Billie is 5’6”
Something about her just gives off that vibe.
She’s too tall to be short but too short to be tall
Everything about her just screams 5’6”
***************
Lana Winters
Tumblr media
Lana is short
I’m talking like 5’1” maybe 5’2”
She is the personification of “dynamite comes in small packages”
I feel like she’s one of those people that gets talked about or shown on TV and everyone thinks they’re tall and then meets then and just ends up been comedically short
But Lana is short and I love it
***************
Cordelia Goode
Tumblr media
See I have very mixed feelings about this
She is 5’8”
But this is exclusively Apocalypse!Cordelia
Coven!Cordelia is 5’5”
But genuinely I feel like in actuality Cordelia is 5’6”
***************
Bette and Dot Tattler
Tumblr media
They are 5’4”
I have no reasoning for this at all but I’m confident in my decision to say this.
They just seem like they’re just short of average
It honestly just is based off of their energy
***************
Sally McKenna
Tumblr media
Sally is short
Not as short as Lana but still short
I’m thinking 5’3”
***************
Audrey Tindall
Tumblr media
I don’t know much but I know that Audrey is 5’6”
She has the energy if someone who desperately wants to be either really short or really tall and is just stuck at an in between height.
I may be projecting slightly but hey I’m right
***************
Ally Mayfair-Richards
Tumblr media
Ally is 5’7”.
This is not a debate
I will take criticism on all the other characters but Ally is set in stone
She just gives off the biggest 5’7” energy of any character ever.
***************
Wilhemina Venable
Tumblr media
Let’s get one thing clear
This woman is tall
Like I’m talking 5’10 - 5’11”
She just has the energy of a tall person idk
I think people tend to think of her as short when she’s actually really tall
***************
Tammy
Tumblr media
Tammy is 5’7”
Once again she has serious 5’7” energy
This is based off the height energies of the other Ocean’s characters
***************
Harriet Hayes
Tumblr media
She has an extraordinarily average height
5’5” energy only
I honestly can’t elaborate on this
But I’m just right

Harriet x Amanda #22
Tumblr media Tumblr media
22. Does their work ever interfere with the relationship?
ALL THE TIME.
Honestly, Harriet’s schedule alone is enough to keep them apart, but Amanda is constantly pulled back to her shelter and forced to stay in one place with all of her responsibilities.
But no matter how hard she works during the day, she always goes to the show on Friday night, and always makes sure she’s rested enough to attend the after party.
When they first met, their schedules were a bit more flexible, Harriet available almost every weekend and Amanda’s new shelter just budding.
That was one of the perks of working on Studio 60 — as crazy as the days were, there was still a conventional weekend.
And while Amanda was working her ass off growing her new business, she hired a nice weekend staff up front and made certain to give herself at least one day off.
That one day off was always spent with Harriet.
Usually in bed.
Things got more complicated when Harriet started getting movies, and of course, because the universe never tends to be easy, that was right when Amanda’s shelter started gaining traction.
She had known that moving to Hollywood would be a good business move, what with all of the celebrities who were constantly looking for companions. But three shelters and two expansions later, and Amanda barely had a free minute, let alone an hour or a day.
Harriet was constantly on a plane, jumping from one set to another, sometimes clear across the ocean.
And the further they got into their relationship, the more careless they got with their time.
They could go months without seeing each other, and honestly, they were both so tied up in work that they barely noticed.
Not even when they crashed in separate beds at the end of the night, because they were both so exhausted from the day.
It used to be that they would call each other once a day, if only to leave a message. Then it devolved into a text a day. And then again when Amanda stopped picking up Harriet at the airport.
It wasn’t that they didn’t love each other.
They absolutely did.
But both women were independent and determined, and they made it work, trying their hardest not to stunt the other’s happiness.
There was one night, one night where Amanda just happened to finish work early enough to meet Harriet at the airport.
And when Harriet walked out of the gate, beaten down and exhausted and hands full of too many bags, Amanda was right there, wrapping her in a tight hug.
They had both cried, the weight and stress of not seeing each other finally lifting as they relished the comfort of the other’s arms.
As they realized why they had fallen in love in the first place.
There were millions of apologies whispered that night, into the darkness.
And they collectively agreed, without even really discussing it, that they had missed this closeness.
They promised each other, bodies sweaty and pressed against one another, that they would both do better. Try better.
No blame was placed, no argument was had. Just the realization that they were wasting time working, when all they really wanted was each other.
After that, their priorities straightened out, and Amanda hired two new girls to run her shelters.
Which left her with plenty of time to spend with Harriet, traveling the world with her whenever it was needed, and finally being able to fall into bed with her every single night.

The Distance Between You & I- Harriet x Matt
Words: 2,361
Warnings: Unplanned Pregnancy, Light Angst, Language
Tumblr media
It wasn’t supposed to be like this.
Hannah Harriet Hayes always had a plan, a strict plan, especially when it came to starting a family. She had run through the scenario many times. It was Matt’s, of course; it had always been Matt’s. There was never a scenario where it wasn’t Matt’s, even when the two were broken up yet again, even when she was with another man. It was always Matt’s. The two of them would be perched on the tub, happily married, together, waiting for the second line to appear with bated breath. They would be overjoyed, after all, they always wanted kids. Matt would grin and hug her tightly, swinging her around in that way he always did when he was excited. The cast would be ecstatic and supportive when they broke the news, and Matt would make a sly joke about how there was no way their child was going to grow up to be a “jesus freak”, causing Harriet to smack his arm playfully. The two would bicker back and forth like they always did, the playful banter that had become the hallmark of their relationship, their very own love language. Harriet had a plan, he was supposed to be there, they were supposed to be in love, but people plan and god laughs, and boy, was he laughing now.
It wasn’t like the two hadn’t tried to make it work, they really did. But one bad pull quote from a terrible interview was enough to put them on the rocks, and soon they were shipwrecked. The banter turned to bickering, which turned to some not so subtle jabs, and then an all-out brawl in Matt’s office. Matt was the one who pulled the plug, after they had gone six rounds in the span of three hours. Then, Harriet collected her belongings from his house and the two barely even spoke, dancing around each other in cast meetings and rehearsals. All it took was one date with Luke and a few too many drinks at an after party for the two to end up having drunk, angry sex in the tech room, and then it was like it never even happened. Matt didn’t speak another word about it, the two never talked, he just gave the cold shoulder like he so often did, and the two did the dance that had become all too familiar, tiptoeing around residual feelings and unspoken words.
Harriet had tried to move on, but six weeks later something just wasn’t right. What she thought was the stomach flu turned out to be something else entirely, and there she sat, taking a pregnancy test in Jordan’s bathroom, alone, listening to the executive soothe a crying Rebecca back to sleep. Harriet had always been meticulous about taking her birth control. She didn’t like surprises and she certainly didn’t like being blindsided. Being unwed and knocked up would certainly put a stain on her good Christian reputation. But after the blowout, she really didn’t see the point. It wasn’t like she was having sex, even when she was with Luke the two never really seemed to be together, and truthfully Harriet always had one foot out the door. It just wasn’t right, he wasn’t him, and Harriet would be a fool if she denied the fact that she knew her person would always be Matt. So, when the second line came through clear as day, it had to be Matt’s.
Jordan could barely keep the grin off her face when Harriet broke the news. Rebecca wasn’t even six months old, the two babies would only be about a year apart, a built in best friend. Still, she was there with tissues when Harriet cried, offering reassuring words. No matter what has happened, you two are a team. You’ve always been a team. Her words were true, despite the numerous breakups and fights and religious differences they still remained each other’s biggest supporters. Harriet was still the only person who could draw Matt out of a writing rut, and Matt continued to throw her the ball every chance he could, not only bringing the show’s ratings up to rival SNL but cementing Harriet’s A-list status in Hollywood. The two worked well together, and right then that was the only thing that was keeping Harriet from losing her damn mind.
Still, the two could barely keep a relationship going for longer than six months. They spent more time pining for each other than they did in each other’s arms, and that was enough to make her heave into the bowl once again. What if they weren’t in love? What if they were both just in love with the idea of being in love? It seemed like they were made for each other, that once in a lifetime kind of love that you saw in movies, the kind that was filled with passion and excitement, the kind where your partner made you want to kiss them and rip out your own hair at the roots. That dizzy, intoxicating love. But intoxication was still toxic, no matter how right it felt in the moment, you still had to deal with the hangover, the blaring reminder that it was truly harmful in the long run. Harriet tried, but she never seemed to learn her lesson, and now they had much more to deal with than just a couple of broken hearts.
She went home early that day, feigning some vague illness in order to ward of suspicion. She just needed time to think, to figure things out. Knowing Matt would be there regardless should have been a huge relief, but all it did was turn her stomach into knots. They were always so hot and cold, so off and on. When they were on, it was great, but it seemed like it only took one small thing, one miscommunication and they were at each other’s throats, hurling insults like it was their favorite sport, not caring the damage they did. They were childish and immature, maybe a little overdramatic. Harriet had spent a majority of her childhood trying to diffuse the tension between her own parents, and she would die before she did that to her own child. But did she have a choice?
Why the hell can’t you two get it together?
The issue was, Harriet did believe they could make it work, if only they had the willpower to stop with these stupid games. They were both at fault, both too stubborn to see their own errors. Harriet hated that she still held hope, that she still was lost in that fairytale land of commitment and honesty. A part of her believed that this, this baby, their baby, could be the missing link, the thing that finally forced them to grow the hell up and put away their own selfish need to always be right. But that wasn’t fair to put on a child, none of this was fair to put on a child. A child should have a happy home, with parents who can at least be civil with each other, and Harriet wasn’t even sure they would be able to do that.
It didn’t help that Matt hadn’t stopped texting her from the moment she left. Are you ok? Do you need me to take you to the doctor? Do you need anything? Her brain was telling her to ignore it, that all it was doing was clouding her judgement. She had been swaying back and forth between making it work and cutting the relationship off completely all day, and each concerned text just made her want to leap into his arms and stay there forever. She had to be rational, she had to think this through, because it wasn’t just about her anymore.
She paced back and forth, wringing her hands as she tried to muster up the courage to reply. She couldn’t put this off, someone was bound to notice sooner rather than later, and Harri had never been a very good liar. She maybe had until the end of the night before Jordan spilled the beans to Danny, and that was being generous. She had to tell him tonight, she just didn’t know if she could. It wasn’t like Matt was a bad guy, he was a great guy, that’s what made all of this so infuriating. Sure, he was a complete jackass sometimes. But when it came down to it he was a really good guy, the best guy, the kind you could depend on, and that made it all so much scarier, because Harriet knew he would be there. But it was too late to worry about that, so with shakey hands, she sent the text.
I need you to come over tonight. We need to talk.
Then, she panicked, not wanting him to read too much into it and rush over.
About the show.
Matt, of course, had a wise ass remark on the tip of his tongue the second she opened the door. “Harri, I told you, you don’t need to rework your Nancy Grace impression. Her voice hasn’t changed in 20 years.” Matt said as he walked through the door. He always liked to act like his coming over was a hassle, yet he responded to her beck and call without hesitation. As much as he tried to keep up his macho persona, he was totally and completely whipped, and they both knew it. He never would say no to her, he never could say no to her. When she needed him, he was there, he would always be there.
Harriet threw him a look, “I didn’t call you over here to talk about Nancy Grace, genius.”
Matt gave a knowing smirk, “I knew that. I just thought we should get the theatrics out of the way before we get into the real reason.” Matt watched Harriet worry her bottom lip between her teeth, knowing her well enough to sense that whatever she called him over for was important. “What, is this about the note I gave earlier? Look, I’m sorry if I embarrassed you in front of Simon and Tom but you know I can’t give you special treatment. The guys have already started calling me a pansy ass.”
“It’s not about the note.” Harriet said quickly, looking up at Matt with wide, scared eyes. This was supposed to be simple, easy, and it would be if Matt would just stop talking. She felt tears prickle behind her eyes, silently cursing herself and the damn hormones that had already seemed to have her in their grasp. She was confident five minutes ago, but staring at the object of her affections was enough to make her go weak in the knees and have the panic completely consume her. As soon as a tear escaped and she moved to wipe it away Matt was all over her, he hated to see her cry. A gentle hand on her shoulder and she was done for, burrowing into his arms and crying into his chest as he tangled his hand in her hair and held her tightly.
“Harri, what is it? You’re scaring me.” Matt said, his macho persona quickly dissolving, his eyes filling will concern once she looked up at him with smudged makeup and running mascara, “You know you can talk to me.”
“I’m pregnant.” Harriet blurted, sucking in a sharp breath before burrowing back into his chest, scared to see his reaction.
It was silent, too silent, unnerving. Harriet braced to defend herself, to tell him that she hadn’t gotten into this mess by herself, that they both were equally responsible for this shit show, but then Matt laughed, “Maybe there is a god.” And oh, if looks could kill, the daggers Harriet was shooting out of her chocolate brown irises would have slit his throat, but he just grinned down at her, and suddenly, she didn’t know if the tears running down her face were from joy or frustration, or maybe the wind had shifted direction. He grabbed her by the shoulders, studying her face for a moment with his brows furrowed, “Why are you crying? Harri… this is great!”
“Why am I crying?” Harriet asked indignantly, huffing as she wiped the snot that was dripping down her top lip with the back of her hand. “I’m crying because we’ve barely spoken in months! We aren’t married, we aren’t even together and…” Harriet ranted, only to be cut off by Matt’s lips on hers, instantly melting under his touch.
He was good, too good. He always knew just what to say and do to make Harriet’s head spin and send the butterflies in her stomach swirling about. He pulled back, holding her face between his hands softly, forcing her to look him in the eye. “Harriet, I’m here. I’m yours. I’ve always been yours.” He said earnestly, waiting for her to nod before breaking into a grin, “I’m going to be a dad!” Before Harriet could even blink, he looped his strong arms around her waist and swung her around, not stopping until he could hear her soft giggles, “God, I love you.”
“I love you too.” Harriet said, giving a soft smile as she wiped at her wet cheeks.
“Why are you still crying? We’re going to have a baby!” Matt practically yelled, his excitement so palpable Harriet wondered how his cheeks hadn’t started to hurt.
“I know, I know. I don’t even know why I’m crying. I was just… scared.” Harriet admitted, ducking her head. The fear still lingered in the back of her mind, but it wasn’t the right moment for that, not when everything seemed so good.
“That I would be upset?” Matt asked, the hurt behind his eyes obvious.
“No! No… I knew that you weren’t going to be upset.” Harriet said quickly, “I just thought you would have made at least one wise ass comment by now about not knowing if it was yours.”
“It’s mine.” Matt said confidently, a condescending grin plastered on his face, “I know it’s mine.”
Harriet playfully smacked his arm with a grimace, “You’re so damn cocky.”

Harlots: A Witty Blend of History and Fiction
https://ift.tt/3kayLkC
Like all the best TV opening titles, Harlots’ comical, brazen credits sequence announces its personality in miniature. A collage-style animation set to modern music, it shows cut-out characters from William Hogarth’s 18th-century painting series A Harlot’s Progress clustered around a giant, luridly colored female nude. They tuck into her crevices, canoodle on her mountainous behind, nestle between her buttocks, and peep out over the top of two plump hillock breasts. In the shadow between her thighs, female prisoners toil (just another day at the mine), and finally, she’s on her back, legs spread wide as the show’s title appears dead centre: Harlots. Come on in.
It’s a bold start that announces Harlots’ defiantly effervescent approach to a period and industry – sex work in the 18th century – that could in other hands be wall-to-wall syphilis and woe. It uses Hogarth’s instructive moralism (the six paintings of A Harlot’s Progress depict an innocent girl falling under the wicked spell of a city bawd, becoming a courtesan and a streetwalker, going to prison, and dying of the pox) for its own ends, wittily repurposing a historical cartoon as the entryway to a rich human drama.
‘The whore’s eye view’
“Everything from the whore’s eye view,” is the rule on Harlots, says producer Alison Owen. Nudity and sex acts are obviously central to the show’s premise, but it presents them from a new angle. Literally.
Having noted how often sex scenes on TV are filmed with the camera looking down on a supine woman, Harlots wanted to show things differently, co-creator Moira Buffini told The Frame. Key to that approach was the use of female directors, led by head director Coky Giedroyc.
“We knew right from the word go that this would really work seen from a female gaze,” says Buffini. Unlike elsewhere on TV, Harlots’ brothel scenes wouldn’t offer titillation; they would show a workplace at work.
After the first and second seasons went out, co-creator Alison Newman was delighted with positive feedback received from viewers in the sex industry who said they recognized their own working lives and experiences on screen. Harlots is set two and a half centuries ago, but its themes are timeless.
Buffini has described the role of sex in Harlots as the same role played by violence in The Sopranos – it’s the characters’ job, which is what makes them unusual, but not what makes them interesting. Just as The Wire’s focus on the drug trade widened to explore its impact on politics, education, and the press, Harlots’ focus on the sex trade widens to explore justice, religion, the aristocracy, and, at the root of it all, money.
‘The only safety is in money’
That’s the mantra of Margaret Wells, former harlot, now a bawd who runs her own “Disorderly House.” Played by Samantha Morton, she’s mother to celebrated courtesan Charlotte (Jessica Findlay Brown) and her beloved new-to-the-game Lucy (Eloise Smyth). Despite a backstory as terrible as they come, Margaret has emerged a fighter with a keen sense of how to survive in a world where even aristocratic women have little economic power.
Economics is Harlots’ real subject, says Buffini. The sale and purchase of sex, its fluctuating value (virginity, real or fabricated could be auctioned off to aristocrats for £50 – closer to £1000 in today’s money – while others made shillings standing up in alleyways) and the short lifespan of those who sold it isn’t just a backdrop to these characters’ lives, it’s the fabric of them.

Harlots to Air on BBC Two in the UK Later This Year

Harlots Canceled After 3 Seasons at Hulu
By Tony Sokol
Keenly aware of what her girls are up against in 18th century London, Margaret teaches that “money is a woman’s only power in this world,” and only lasting wealth can make them free. It’s a shrewd perspective from a strategic thinker. Margaret Wells is certainly no hero, but her resolve and gumption make her fascinating to watch.
Equally fascinating is Lydia Quigley, played by Lesley Manville. The owner of an exclusive and fashionable brothel, Quigley is a monster shaped by her own abusive start in life. A sadist and kidnapper who profits from feeding corrupt appetites, she’s a villain. And yet … Manville makes her human, and between them, she and Morton make the Quigley/Wells rivalry darkly layered and involving.
Elsewhere, Holli Dempsey is vibrant and thrillingly unpredictable as the headstrong Emily Lacey. Findlay-Brown is captivating as Charlotte. Dorothy Atkinson, Dougie McMeekin, Bronwyn James, Hugh Skinner… It’s a strong cast, packed with entertaining characters each on journeys of their own.
The Covent Garden Ladies
Harlots doesn’t feature real historical characters, but its ensemble is drawn from a variety of real-world sources. When Buffini and Newman began to research the period, a starting point was historian Hallie Rubenhold’s 2005 book, The Covent Garden Ladies: The Extraordinary Story of Harris’s List. The list in question was an annual directory/review compendium of London’s brothel workers that’s been described as the equivalent of an 18th-century Yelp for the sex trade. Among its entries is courtesan Charlotte Hayes, who, along with the infamous Kitty Fisher, provided inspiration for the character of Charlotte Wells.
The Old Bailey trial records provided another source of real-life cases tried against bawds and sex workers – like Ann Duck, the inspiration for Violet Cross (Rosalind Eleazar). Merely touching on real-world inspirations leaves Harlots free to rewrite history to suit the needs of the story, and not to slavishly follow a prepared path for any of its characters.
Buffini and co. found a paucity of surviving 18th-century writing by women in the industry, so were forced to make several leaps of the imagination while planning the series. The autobiography of sex shop owner Teresia Philips offered some help. Lydia Quigley’s real-world counterpart – Elizabeth Needham – who was notorious enough to feature as a caricature in the Hogarth paintings used in Harlots’ opening credits (she’s the woman luring the freshly arrived innocent to her sordid doom) offered a little more. The inspirations that fed into the characters of Nancy Birch, Harriet Lennox, and Mary Cooper are all discussed in this excellent and detailed article by historian and Whores of Yore curator Dr. Kate Lister.
‘The flip-side of the Jane Austen novel’
It wasn’t only real life that provided inspiration for Harlots, but also the literature of the age. In this interview, Buffini explains that the character of Anne Pettifer, a young woman in Quigley’s employ, was inspired by one of Jane Austen’s creations. “Our idea for Anne Pettifer was that she’s Lydia Bennet,” explained Buffini.
In Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, the Bennet family experiences a scandal that, if not resolved, would stop all four of Lydia’s sisters from marrying well. 15-year-old Lydia runs away to London with an older man who has no intention of marrying her until he’s paid to do so by a wealthy benefactor.
“What would have happened to Lydia Bennet without a shadow of a doubt (if she hadn’t been rescued) is that she would have ended up in a house like Mrs. Quigley’s,” Buffini said. “Our drama is about the Lydia Bennets of this world, who don’t get rescued by men, and the girls who have even fewer economic choices than Lydia Bennet.”
‘Dancing on the edge of an abyss’
If that makes Harlots sound bleak, it isn’t. Yes, its historical period was a desperate time for many. Its characters face unmentionable hardships and almost perpetual existential threats – from the law, from poverty and disease, from their “culls,” and from each other – but this isn’t a drama mired in woe or pity. It’s about survival. Its world, just like ours (because in many ways, it still is ours), is awful and funny, terrible and warm, sad and joyful at the same time.
That combination, pitched somewhere between high drama and comedy, is part of what made Harlots a peculiar sell. As Buffini explained to The Frame, the channels they took it to before landing on US streaming service Hulu struggled to grasp its tone. They didn’t understand the role of humor and wit in hardship. After three series, Hulu cancelled the show, after which point the BBC bought the UK airing rights.
“We think it’s about women who are dancing on the edge of an abyss,” Buffini said, “But they are dancing on the edge of an abyss. Right from the word go, we thought that we would show them dancing.”
Harlots series one arrives on BBC Two on Wednesday the 5th of August at 9pm with a double-bill

My response to President Trump’s executive order on immigrant families
President Trump signed an executive order Wednesday afternoon stating that families seeking asylum should be detained together when “appropriate and consistent with law and available resources.”
The order maintains the administration’s “zero tolerance” policy for illegal immigrants. It also instructs the Pentagon to make facilities available for the housing and care of immigrant families.
It directs the Attorney General to seek modification of the 1997 Flores Settlement Agreement to allow alien families to be kept together “throughout the pendency of criminal proceedings.” And it requires the Attorney General to “prioritize the adjudication of cases involving detained families.”
In related news, the House will vote today on an immigration bill that would end family separations as part of a larger overhaul. “We can enforce our immigration laws without breaking families apart,” said House Speaker Paul Ryan.
God is “Father of the fatherless”
As I noted on Tuesday, illegal immigration is an especially complicated theological issue.
We are charged by Scripture with obeying the government (Romans 13:1), but we are also to care for immigrants (Exodus 22:21; Hebrews 13:2) and children (Mark 10:14). It is difficult to devise a solution that satisfies law enforcement supporters as well as advocates for immigrants and their families.
I want to focus today on those at the center of the storm: the children. More than 2,300 have now been separated from parents seeking asylum or attempting to enter the US illegally.
In addition, 437,500 children were in foster care in the US by the end of fiscal year 2016. Many are in the foster care system because of substance abuse by their parents. And more than 2.5 million children are homeless in the United States. This historic high represents one out of every thirty children in America.
Of all the demographics in society, children are especially cherished in God’s word.
God’s Son could have entered the human race in any way he wished. The fact that the One by whom “all things were created” (Colossians 1:16) chose to enter his creation as a baby tells us what God thinks of children.
To reinforce this priority during his earthly ministry, Jesus took children “in his arms and blessed them” (Mark 10:16). Now he wants us to do the same.
Neglecting or mistreating children is a grave offense to God. Jesus stated, “It is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish” (Matthew 18:14). Scripture proclaims: “Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation” (Psalm 68:5).
We are warned: “If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever” (1 Timothy 5:8).
One child can change the world
Any one of the children at the center of the border crisis could change the world. Consider a man whose recently published story I just read but whose impact on the world was immeasurable.
Josiah Henson was born into slavery. After horrific abuse from his owner, he led his family on a harrowing journey to Canada and freedom. Though he could barely read and could not write, Josiah became one of the most powerful orators, ministers, and businessmen of his day.
He founded a community for Africans in Canada that provided homes and livelihoods for thousands. He helped establish a school that educated generations. He made two fund-raising journeys to Great Britain, where he had a personal audience with Queen Victoria and preached in Charles Spurgeon’s church. He met personally with US President Rutherford Hayes as well.
Perhaps most notably, he served as the inspiration for Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, a novel which unmasked the horrors of slavery in the Old South and played a decisive role in the Civil War.
No one who met Josiah Henson as a child could have imagined the eternal impact he would make on the world.
The hands by which we embrace the future
One child can indeed change the world. How can we pray for the children at the heart of the immigration crisis?
One: Ask God to protect them, provide for their needs, and unite them with their families quickly.
Two: Intercede for those ministering to children and families in the border area. Look for ways you and your church can partner with them to provide support for those in crisis.
Three: Pray urgently for our nation to value children as God does. Abortion is an ongoing tragedy that grieves the heart of God. Ronald Reagan was right: “Abortion is advocated only by persons who have themselves been born.” Child trafficking and child pornography are grievous, heinous sins.
Every crisis contains a call. The immigration conflict of our day is an opportunity to seek and share Jesus’ love for “the least of these” (Matthew 25:40).
As Josiah Henson shows, children are the hands by which we embrace the future.

I'm your secret, aren’t I?
Chapter 5
Sequel of If not now, when?
Synopsis: reader meets Harry’s family but things go awry
WARNING: none
Word count: 800 +
A/N: sorry for any typos!! Again these chapters will probably be short like the If not now, when?
Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 the end
Tumblr media
It’s Christmas Eve celebrations tonight in the Hayes household. It’s been a stressful and tense few days of Harry evading the obvious and you trying not to pressure her. Neither one of you got any alone time except for the little time you both spent at night cuddling before Harry scurries off. You both are getting restless for the other’s touch.
All of the Hayes family will be over tonight for Christmas Eve dinner and movies. Something you weren’t particularly looking forward to, because every single one of her family asks many, many invasive questions. But for Harriet, you would endure anything for her.
Dinner goes off without a hitch. Talking, laughing, and bonding. You were actually having fun with her family. Until Harriet’s aunt, Janice asked why she didn’t have a boyfriend. As you expected Harriet just said she didn’t need a boyfriend at the moment. Which was fine with you, because you definitely didn’t expect her to come out to her entire family at once.
Once dinner is done, Harriet pulls you aside while the rest of her family retires into the living room for some Christmas movies. When the last person exits the room, Harry looks at you and grins, “Alone at last.” You smile as her arms wrap around your waist. It’s nice being able to hold your girlfriend in your arms before she sneaks back into her room at night. This is a welcome change because Harry’s parents are busy tending to the family instead of breathing down your necks.
“I’ve missed this,” you whisper into her neck. “I know, sweetheart. I’ve decided to tell them the day after Christmas. I promise, I just don’t want to ruin their Christmas if they react horribly, and my whole family will be here all day tomorrow. Is… is that okay?”
“Yeah… of course,” you smile shyly. Harriet smiles back before she looks up and points. “Look… mistletoe.”
You look up and see the mistletoe hanging above the entryway. Harriet takes your chin in her hand and tilts your head back down, “Well, it’s tradition after all.” Her lips cover yours in the softest kiss and as you pull her in closer the kiss becomes more passionate. Both of you forget for a moment where you are; you’re both lost in the sensations of your lips moving together as one.
“Harriet, come watch th-,” you both break apart as Susan’s voice fills the room, “Harriet? What’s going on here?” Confusion is written all over Susan’s face.
“I-I… mom… it’s not what it looks like,” Harriet stammers out, “she… k-kissed me.”
The sting you felt in your heart was indescribable. You immediately dropped your arms to your side and slowly backed away from Harry. She looks at you and worry hits her face as she realizes what she said. Susan looks at both of you confused and horrified. “I think I should go,” you whisper out as you make a dash up the stairs towards the guest room.
Tears threaten to pour from your eyes with each step you take, but you held them in until you were in your room. But as soon as that door closed you broke down as you packed your things. You hear a knock on the door but ignore it as you continue packing. Harriet slowly opens the door, “Sweetheart, I’m sor-”
“Save it, Harriet,” you continue packing without as much as looking up to acknowledge her presence. “Please, Y/n. I didn’t mean to say what I said. It just slipped out.”
“Harriet, enough!” you yell. “I get it, truly I do. But I’m done being a part of this charade. I’m not going back down there as your friend anymore. Harriet, I love you more than anyone I’ve ever loved before but this is torture. I shouldn’t have to listen to your parents telling you how you should meet a man and settle down. I shouldn’t have to hide my affections for you. I shouldn’t have feel as if what we have… had… isn’t real.” Harriet's eyes are filled with tears as she takes in your words, “H-had?”
You finally meet her eyes with your own, and it breaks your heart to see her so heartbroken. But what about your hurt, “I’m always going to be your secret, aren’t I?”
Harriet looked down ashamed. “I’m flying back home on the soonest flight available. I’ll have my things out of the apartment by the time you get back,” you whisper to her. You can’t believe this is actually happening. With one final zip of your suitcase, you make your way out of the door, and as you go, you can hear Harriet breakdown and say, “Please, don’t go,” but you keep walking.
Once you make it outside, successfully avoiding any of Harriet’s family, you call a cab. When the cab arrives you get your suitcase in the car and climb into the backseat and look out the window at the Hayes family home. You can see Harriet’s silhouette in her window of the guest bedroom, and all you want to do is run up into that room and wrap your arms around her… but you don’t.

Harriet Hayes Dating a Younger Woman Would Include
Tumblr media
Masterlist
anonymous said: can you do headcanons for all sarah characters that you write for dating a (much) younger girl ?
I hope you guys like this one :)
-
Harriet Hayes
You’re one of the new writers hired to work on Studio 60 fresh out of college
Studio 60 is your first big job
In your first few months, you don't interact with Harriet much
You spend most of the time in the writer's room and your tiny closet of an office
During this time you do make a name for yourself around the studio for being a hell of a writer
Most of your sketches making it into the show every week
And the best ones star a certain blonde actress
Harriet is your muse and writing for her is some of your best work
After weeks upon weeks of you writing hit after hit for the woman, she finally goes to Matthew and Danny and asks who's writing all of this great material
She expected them to say it was Matthew, but instead, they say it's you
Matthew gestures over to where you're sitting in a spare area writing on a notepad
(Sometimes you like to get out of your cramped office and write wherever you can find a free space)
"(Y/N), she's one of our newest writers and surprisingly almost always gets a great sketch into the show. I think she might have a crush on you or at least your talent"
Matthew winks at the woman and Harriet looks over at you
"Well, I must go meet my new favorite writer," Harriet says smiling before making her way over to you
"Hey! What about me?" Matthew calls after her
"You've been replaced!"
You look up as Harriet sits down in front of you, shocked that she’s even paying attention to you
It’s not that she’s ever been rude to you, but usually the cast doesn’t interact with new writers that much
“Hi, Ms. Hayes,” you say nervously
“Oh please, (Y/N), call me Harriet,” she says smiling brightly at you causing you to blush
She adds “I thought I should meet the writer who’s giving me such amazing material to work with this season”
“It’s an honor to meet you, Harriet”
The two of you chat about your writing and careers
You end talking for almost two hours before one of the other cast members has to grab Harriet to go work on something
Once Harriet leaves your kind of in awe
The awe keeps coming when later in the night you’ve finally gone back to your office and there’s a knock on your door
You reach over and open it (because, yes your office is that small) to reveal Harriet standing there
“So, this is where the magic happens?”
“Until I get too cramped and move to right somewhere else,” you say making her giggle
“I was wondering if you wanted to finish writing for the day and go get some dinner?”
She bites her bottom lip as she waits for your response
“Is Harriet Hayes asking me out on a date?”
She smiles
“If you want it to be then, yes”
And that’s how you land your first date with Harriet Hayes
The date goes really well
The two of you go to some bar near the studio
You learn more about the woman and she loves getting to know you as well
This time there are no interruptions, so you and Harriet talk for hours until it gets so late that you and her should probably call it a night
Before the two of you part ways, Harriet gives you a kiss on the cheek
Unknown to the two of you, someone with the press got pictures of you and Harriet’s date
They are released the next day, but you don’t even notice
Harriet’s manager tells her about the pictures circulating and she just shrugs it off
That same day Harriet knocks on your office door around noon holding a takeout bag
“I thought you might be in need of a lunch break,” she says gesturing to the food she’s carrying
You had been working so hard that you hadn’t even noticed what time it was
The two of you eat lunch in her dressing room
Harriet totally asked around to see what she should get for lunch for you and her because she didn’t know what you liked
Harriet doesn’t bring up the pictures of you and her circulating because you didn’t seem to have noticed and she didn’t want to make it awkward
For the next two weeks, Harriet finds excuses to come find you
Sometimes it’s coffee in the morning
Takeout bags filled with lunch
Or she catches you at the end of the day and invites you to dinner or drinks
At show’s after-party, she even spends most of her time with you
Pulling you out onto the dance floor
Wrapping an arm around your waist
The two of you haven’t really put a label on what you and Harriet are, but everyone around you and her thinks you’re a couple
Harriet gives you kisses on the cheek
Hugs you whenever she sees you
And always makes time to see you
Some nights she even kisses you on the lips before the two of you part ways
Finally after two weeks of whatever is going on between you and Harry, at the after-party you and Harriet are sitting at a table in a quieter part of the club and she has her hand resting on your thigh
“Harry, what are you and me?”
“What do you mean?”
“Are you my girlfriend?”
Harriet chuckles and smiles at you, “Do you want to be my girlfriend?”
“Um, hell yes”
This causes the blonde to smile even wider
“Then, yes, I’m your girlfriend”
Harriet leans in and kisses you, not caring if anyone sees
Not that the two of you are officially girlfriends, Harriet finds even more excuses to see you
Most nights she also invites you back to her place
She drops by your office sometimes just to see how you’re doing and gives you a kiss
You give her a good luck kiss before every show even though you know she’s going to do great
The two of you don’t confirm you’re relationship until Harriet says something in an interview
The two of you haven’t been hiding your relationship, but you and her also didn’t comment on it to the tabloids
You and Harriet are an acting/writing duo to be reckoned with
You end up moving in with Harriet during the shows summer break
Sometimes you try to write while your home with Harriet and Harriet is awful about distracting you
She just wants you to pay attention to her and she’s adorable
“Harry, do you want me to finish this sketch or not?”
“That depends. Will you give me kisses afterward?”
“Yes”
“Then fine”
She sits quietly by you as you finish it
She loves watching you work
Harry thinks the face you make while you’re concentrating is adorable
One night, after a couple years of dating, Harriet leans up in bed and asks “Am I still your muse?”
You smile and kiss the woman
“Hannah Harriet Hayes, you will always be my muse.”

Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 5 the end
Tumblr media
The next few days went by with still no luck of Harriet feeling the need to open up to her parents about the trueness of your relationship. Every time you saw her getting closer and closer to revealing it to her parents, she would clam up and shy away. Like yesterday, you all were sitting at the dinner today and Harriet was bouncing with nerves. She told you right before she wanted to tell them at dinner and you were happy to think she finally built up the courage to do so. Susan knew something wasn’t sitting right with Harry, “Sweetie, what’s wrong?”
“Well, mom... I… um… I w-wanted to tell you s-something…,” Harriet stutters out. “Well, go ahead. Get it out Harriet, you’re making us nervous.” Harriet looks around the room, avoiding eye contact with you. You watch her with bated breath. “I…,” she looks at her mom, “I’m going in to read for a part in a new movie. The casting director really thinks I’ll be good for the part.”
You slowly release the breath you were holding. Harriet looks at you with the most apologetic face, and mouth, “I’m sorry.” You weakly smile back as her mom gushes about how exciting it is to have a movie star as a daughter.
That didn’t deter your belief that she would gather the courage to do so. She was just waiting for the right moment and the bravery to do so, and that would be coming. At least, that’s what you kept telling yourself. She wasn’t ashamed of you or herself. She was just waiting.
So you were there for her, you would hold her at night when she snuck into your room and tell her how proud you were of her for trying. She would tell you every night before she snuck back into her room, “Soon, I promise.” And your belief in those simple words kept holding strong. It wasn’t easy for someone to just come out of the closet, and you knew that. But being Harriet’s secret wasn’t something you wanted. You never were ashamed of who you were in the past and you weren’t going to be now.
Today was spent doing some last minute Christmas shopping with Susan and Harriet. You tagged along because you didn’t want to be stuck with any of Harriet's family without her by your side. Even though spending time with Susan was exhausting. She, without even knowing, really got to your last nerve. Shopping was winding down and you three sat outside a café getting some nourishment and caffeine after a long day.
“Harriet, don’t you think it’s time to settle down?” Susan says out of the blue. You almost spit out the coffee you’re sipping on. While Harriet’s eyes bulge out of her head at her mother’s bluntness. “Mom!” Harriet hisses.
“I just think it’s time to find yourself a husband. Settle down. Have some grandkids for me and your father,” Susan says to Harriet. You look back and forth to see what’s about to unfold. “Mom, I don’t want to talk about this. Can you please change the mom?”
“Y/n, don’t you think it’s time for her to settle down. What about you? I bet you have someone waiting back for you in New York,” she nudges you playfully. Maybe this is the moment, “Yes, sort of.” You look up at Harriet and she smiles back at you. Susan giddily asks, “What’s his name?!”
“Um... I…,” you’re lost for an answer. “Mom! Leave her alone. She doesn’t want you digging around in her personal life. Anyway, I don’t need a husband to be happy. That’s not the only form of happiness,” she looks at you, “There’s so much more.”
“Harriet, you can’t be alone forever. You need to find someone to spend your life with.” Harriet rolls her eyes, “Please, just drop this topic. Can we please talk about literally anything else?”
‘Nice avoidance, honey’ you think to yourself as you continue sipping on your latte.
The ride home was terribly awkward. Harriet knew she hurt your feelings and she didn’t know how to comfort you. She really couldn’t anyway with her mom warming around every second she could. When you made it back into the house, Susan ushered Harry into the living to show Terry all the gifts the purchased for the family gift exchange. You somberly walked upstairs to the guest room while Harry watched you out of the corner of her eye. She felt absolutely horrible. She knew you knew how hard this was for her, but she also knew how hard this was for you. The last thing in the world Harriet wanted to do was disappoint you.
Once you make it into the guest room, you flop down on the bed with a loud sigh. You didn’t realize how draining this was going to be without being able to be with your girlfriend the way you’re used to. All you want is to just be able to hold her hold without the thought of her possibly flinching away from you. This whole trip was a lot harder than you ever imagined. Maybe, just maybe… Matt was right.

Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5

Sitting in the airport with strangers whirling around you, you sit waiting for your plane in a numb trance. You couldn’t believe this is how things ended, never in a million years did you think you would have broken up with Harry. She meant everything to you and you loved her with your whole being. All you wanted was a future with her… to grow old together, but unfortunately, it looked as if that wasn’t going to happen.
Maybe you were making a mistake, maybe you shouldn’t have ended things so rashly but everything just felt empty right now. You couldn’t think rationally because you were fuming with emotions. They wouldn’t stop flowing out of your head, but then Matt’s words kept creeping in. ‘She loves you'... ‘Don’t be too rash with her’...
Was leaving her like that a mistake? Should you go back and talk things out? You just weren’t sure. A little space between you both could be a good thing. It could give both of you time to figure out what you truly want. You knew you weren’t the only one hurting right now but you were scared of feeling how you felt there. The thought of never being with Harriet again killed you and you knew it was killing her too. You both were meant for each other. What in the hell were you doing?
There wasn’t much time to think about it because it was now time to board your flight. With a final sigh, you grab your carry-on bag and head towards your departure area. Out of nowhere, you heard, “Y/n!” shouted behind you as you handed in your ticket about to board the plane.
Your eyes search the airport looking for the voice you knew all too well. When you finally find the voice still shouting your name, you look at her confused, “Harriet?” You see her running towards you with her own carry-on bag. She looks distraught and you take a step towards her, “What are you doing here, Harry?”
Harriet wraps her arms around you tightly as she takes a moment to catch her breath. You wrap your arms around her for a moment but then you push her back slightly, “Harry, why are you her-,” she interrupts you, “I told them!”
“W-what?” you asked, trying to process what she was saying and why she’s here. “I told them. I told them about us. I told them I’m gay… I…I told them I’m in love with you.”
“W-what did they say?” you gently ask her back. “Well, they weren’t happy. My… my mom asked me to pick… um… between you or them. But it’s you… it’s always been you. I’m so sorry! Please tell me I haven’t lost my chance with you, Y/n.”
Honestly, you didn’t know what to do. Did you want to wrap your arms around Harry and tell her you both would be okay? Yes, yes you did. But were you scared? Yes, yes you were.
“P-please,” she whispers, and when you look in her eyes you make your mind up. You pull her into your arms and crash your lips into hers. In that moment, you knew everything would be okay. All Harriet’s insecurities in her sexuality were gone. A weight was lifted off of both your shoulders, but you were worried about Harry.
You break the kiss, “I love you, but are you sure I’m worth possibly losing them?”
“I love you too. I couldn’t imagine a day of my life without you in it and if they don’t understand that then so be it. Now let’s go home.” Your whole face lights up at that moment because you weren’t leaving this town alone… you were leaving hand in hand with your future wife.
