sixteen.

it was finally y/n’s sixteenth birthday, and once again, not a single person to celebrate with. being a child of demeter was sweet, everyone was kind all around, but y/n simply couldn’t find her people.

she got along with everyone, no one had anything against her. sure, older kids would pick on her from time to time, but that was an automatic agreement she signed when joining camp two years ago.

she just couldn’t develop as strong of a bond with anyone. she’d sometimes fall asleep with silent tears, wondering if she was broken or missing something key. if everyone was nice, why couldn’t she trust? form a relation?

the night wielded a nice breeze, wafting through y/n’s locks as she sat by the strawberry fields, playing with the leaves. a slight glow emitted from her fingertips as she trailed them along the soil, a small smile on her lips. 

glancing towards the amphitheater, she could see those her age dancing and singing, having the time of their lives. the younger kids had dispersed due to curfew, she noted. 

they all seemed to be in glee.

snapping her eyes shut, she fought back the intrusive thoughts and inhaled a sharp breath. opening her eyes, y/n grabbed some of the soil, stacking it into three layers. grabbing a strawberry, she delicately placed it atop and pulled away to admire her makeshift cake.

“happy birthday, n/n — happy sweet sixteenth,” she said loud enough just for her to hear. looking up at the glimmering stars, y/n decided to make a wish.

all i wish for is belonging. true belonging.

y/n went back to her cake, grabbing the strawberry and picking herself up from the ground. dusting herself off, she took her water bottle and gently rinsed the strawberry. placing it between her teeth and softly biting into it, she savoured the taste as she walked down towards the amphitheater and then the cabins.

she felt stupid for not wearing a proper jacket or shirt, but she did enjoy the fresh air leaving a chill to her skin. y/n was hoping her black tee would blend her into the night, especially as she neared the amphitheater. she wasn’t entirely keen on interacting more at the moment — it was past twelve and she knew she couldn’t match their energy.

“hey, y/n?”

the girl halted in her tracks. turning on her heel, she came face to face with none other than the loveable hermes boy lightly jogging up to her.

“hi luke,” she greeted, passing him a small smile. 

luke smiled back immediately. after a silent beat, he spoke again. “i just wanted to say, ha —“

“hey, luke! get over here, man, we need your backup vocals right now!” one of the hermes kids yelled, y/n couldn’t tell who from their distance.

“yeah, give me a sec!” he screamed, turning back to the girl.

“no dude, we need you RIGHT NOW! we’re gonna be mashed potatoes if you don’t!”

luke rolled his eyes, positioning himself back towards the theatre. “can’t you see i’m busy?”

“you can talk to anyone about anything whenever, luke! this is a one time exclusive!”

“stop quoting missy elliot, and no, give me two minutes!” he replied, a slight whine in his voice.

a scoff followed, “we’re gonna be eliminated, castellan!”

exasperated by bickering with his brothers, luke sighed and nodded. “i’ll be right there!” 

the boy instantly spun back around, wanting to wish the demeter girl a happy birthday.

she was at least 30 feet ahead of him, speed walking away with a slight slump to her shoulders.

luke’s smile dropped. another day, another day of being unable to fully attend to her. these countless moments have occurred more than he could fathom — he was always pulled away from the one girl he didn’t want to be pulled away from.

and yet here she was, disappearing out of his sight once again. “this karaoke better be worth it,” he grumbled under his breath as he trudged back.

the next morning was calm, not many campers up to anything special. there was a soft pitter patter on the window panes, but y/n didn’t mind. the rain rejuvenated her.

throwing on her raincoat but paying no mind to her shorts or shoes, y/n left the cabin with her stash of bracelet material in her pocket and sprinted through the paths, heading to chiron and mr. d.

luke’s attention immediately perked up at the bolting girl, and he realized this might just be the one time he can say anything.

subtly running after her, he watched as she entered the big house and rather excitedly. he followed inside, keeping a distance when he heard her begin to speak to chiron.

he didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but he did hear it all.

“may i call my dad?”

“of course, y/n. here,” luke could hear the shuffle of a phone, and footsteps coming closer to the edge of chiron’s office. 

the dial tone was evident. it went through three times before he heard the young girl speak.

“hey dad. hope you’re doing good. should've known you weren't gonna pick up. i turned sixteen today, fyi. hope your kids are doing fine and same with that blonde bimbo,” she spat, making luke’s eyes widen. “i’m not coming home for christmas. might be early to determine but i’m sure i won’t. bye.”

she walked back to chiron, and luke could hear light sniffles coming from her. his heart sank. 

“for all it matters, i’m here, we all are. happy birthday, y/n. you’ve always made us proud, you’ve always been an asset to us, you deserve to know that no matter what,” chiron reassured, and luke could hear the girl softly thank him.

stepping outside of chiron’s office and shutting the door behind her, y/n broke into a sob in the hallway. it was one thing to have others not be around, but when family abandons, nothing feels real anymore. 

luke observed as she stopped her tears almost as quick as they started, wiping her eyes as she headed towards him, unbeknownst to her.

“uh,” luke cleared his throat, “hey, y/n.”

y/n’s face warmed up, startled at his presence. hurriedly fixing herself up, she nodded. ���hi luke.”

“i’m sorry for last night,” he apologized, scratching the nape of his neck. “i was trying to talk to you but i guess i got carried away with everyone else,” he paused, looking down, “as usual. i’m sorry.”

y/n shook her head. “it’s okay. don’t apologize, life happens.”

“right,” luke acknowledged awkwardly. “speaking of life,” he approached her in a friendly manner, “i wanted to wish you a happy birthday last night. you’re sixteen, one of the biggest milestones in anyone’s life!”

his enthusiasm made the corners of y/n’s lips tug up, and she watched intently as he continued. “you deserve an amazing birthday, and i’m going to give that to you.”

y/n was not expecting that.

“c’mon, let’s go.” luke held his hand out to her, his dark curls practically bouncing in excitement. a sweet grin crept onto her face, making the young boy smile even wider. she accepted his hand, and the second he felt her palm within his, the fragility made him realize he could never be a part of something that’d hurt her ever again.

she was stronger than anyone he knew, enduring all the shit the world put upon her. he just knew he couldn’t be one of them to do the same. 

together, the two gracefully left the big house, trampling down to camp and rushing towards god knows where.

somehow, they ended up at the pavilions, and without a second thought, y/n pulled out her bracelet material. luke was confused but watched eagerly as she carefully took the little sacks out.

“wanna make some friendship bracelets?”

“friendship bracelets?” luke asked, unsure of the concept.

y/n nodded. “today’s the day someone willingly decided to hang out with me. i was going to make some alone but if you want, we can create matching ones and mark our friendship.”

luke grinned toothily, “so we’re friends now?”

y/n nodded, “i’d love to be, if you don’t mind.”

his eyes screamed happiness, “i definitely don’t mind.”

the two taped down their threads, choosing colours that work cohesively with one another’s. “now you’re gonna wanna take this thread and do a tuck-knot with it,” y/n explained, showing the boy to her left the steps.

after getting the basics down, the two fell into a comfortable silence, threading away and adding some cute hand-made clay beads here and there. “i’m not too childish for wanting to do this, right?” y/n suddenly asked, a nervous smile on her face.

luke shook his head and gave her a hearty grin. “i don’t think there should ever be such thing as “too childish”, sucks the life out of everyone,” he looked back down at the bracelet, “plus, when you’re a demigod, what else is there to do? play video games? we’d be dead in minutes.”

y/n laughed. luke froze.

he’d never heard her laugh this much. she sounded pretty.

“you’re not wrong,” she slowly caught her breathing and softly chuckled. “are you close to finishing your’s?”

the hermes boy nodded and watched intently as y/n’s delicate fingers tutored him on how to securely tie the ends of the bracelet. watching her move so effortlessly made his heart skip a beat — she was perfect.

even though this was the smallest activity they could ever do, she was perfect at it. it made him wonder why he didn’t seize the opportunity to be her friend beforehand.

“hey, y/n?”

“yes, luke?”

“i just wanted to say,” his breath lightly hitched when she began placing the bracelet on his wrist to make sure it was of right measurement, “that, uh, you’re really pretty.”

now it was y/n’s turn to freeze.

“but, i’m not doing all of this to just be your boyfriend or whatever. hell, we’ve just begun our friendship,” he stifled a small, sweet laugh, “so when i say this i really just mean it from the bottom of my heart. i don’t want it to influence you in any way, i just want you to know how i’ve seen you for the past two years.

“you’re gentle and loving, not to mention stealthy and incredibly intelligent. i love whenever i look over and you’re always doing something that captivates me. i’ve been an idiot to admire you from afar for this long, but you’ve always deserved to know and be appreciated. i’m sorry i couldn’t give that to you sooner.”

y/n looked into luke’s eyes, somber traversing in her’s. “may i hug you?”

luke nodded, and y/n wrapped him up in her arms. the boy held tightly onto her, a sudden thought of losing her intruding his mind of peace. “happy birthday, y/n,” he whispered into her ear as they continued to embrace.

“thank you, luke. this means the world to me.”

luke now knew he had to give her the world, no matter what.

their matching bracelets would only be a reminder of what there was, what there will be and what will be gone.

Percy thinks that maybe Mr. D does like him, just a little.

Making him head counselor gives him a reason to stay at Camp Half-Blood and interact with his friends and exist like a mortal in the mortal world.

Technically, the Ancient Laws apply to him.

By the time him being a god had become public knowledge, Zeus had gotten accustomed to thinking of him like an annoyance, like the presumptuous half-blood who saved them and irritated him. He doesn't know if the talk of him being a nymph's child instead of Sally's had even made it to Zeus's throne on Olympus. Hermes is in charge of spreading gossip and the god doesn't seem particularly interested in making his life difficult, which he appreciates.

But he has his own domain now.

He's a god in more than blood. This isn't something Zeus is going to ignore.

His dad is probably planning on staying below sea level for a while.

Daily Devotions with the Orphic Hymns

Today is 4th of Metageitnion (21st of August)

This modern system of daily devotions blends material from two sources: Hesiod's sacred month, as described in his Works and Days, and the Orphic Hymns. The ideas in the Orphic Hymns sometimes don't match with more mainstream beliefs of the polis. But using these hymns is worth it because it helps us honor not just the main gods, but also many smaller ones. This way, we can pay our respects to a wide range of gods throughout the whole month.

Other hymns may of course be substituted at the individual's discretion. The numbers given for the hymns correspond to those in Apostolos N. Athanassakis, The Orphic Hymns: Text, Translation and Notes

A shortened version of the devotions may be done by simply lighting a candle, reading "Orpheus to Mousaios," saying any personal prayers, and extinguishing the candle.

Notes on chart:

Days mentioned by Hesiod as sacred to specific deities are marked.

Horkos is the god (or, if you like, personification) of Oath. Days sacred to this deity are considered difficult.

As the lunar calendar months range between 29 and 30 days in the Greek reckoning, it may be necessary in short months to recite all the hymns for both day 29 and day 30 on the day of the dark moon. As the last day of the month is sacred to Hekate, Her hymn should always be included.

About Incense

The Orphic Hymns specify particular types of incense to be offered to each deity. In cases where one is saying multiple hymns with differing instructions, one might either choose a single type or make a blend of all those indicated. Pure frankincense makes a good all-purpose offertory incense.

The incense specifications from the Orphic text are as follows:

Frankincense: Apollon, Ares, Artemis, Asklepios, Bakkhai, Dike, Eos, Hephaistos, Herakles, Hermes, Hygeia, Kouretes, Muses, Nike, Satyros, Silenos, Tethys, Themis, Titans

PJO Episode 6: We Take a Zebra to Vegas 

I think it's important to say two things before I begin, first of all, I am a book reader, and second, I absolutely have loved this show so far! I thought the changes they have made have pretty consistently been improvements/adaptations to the screen that make sense and enhance the story.

Episode 6, and specifically the Lotus Casino is the first time I have been disappointed.

30-minute episodes are a detriment to the show. For me, it felt like they were speed-running for time instead of letting us get lost in the story. We moved from point to point, this then that, without feeling like those points really mattered. (Even Percy and Annabeth's relationship feels like a speedrun instead of a 5 book slow burn).

What makes the casino scary is the slow realization. For Medusa, practically a pop culture icon surrounded by stone statues on a Satyr path in the middle of the woods, it makes sense to know who she is. But why would you suspect a busy Las Vegas casino to be evil, and who remembers the Lotus Eaters from the Odyssey. If you know what the monster is from the beginning you take away its power.

The Solstice: Why have they passed this major plot point? In particular with the race against time, why take away the time limit and instead make it about a determination to finish what you've started? Is it to maximize Percy's loyalty?

The Pearls (Spoilers for TV-only watchers): If Percy has 4 instead of 3 pearls, what is going to happen to that 4th pearl. It's kind of incredibly important there are only 3 pearls, especially with the original time limit and the desperate need to get away as fast as possible. Long story short, how is he losing it - just like he must fail to save what matters most in the end.

What I did like:

I actually really enjoyed the Luke/Hermes dynamic they have set up since it really shows just how deep Luke's anger runs, especially regarding his mother. Also, I enjoyed Lin Manuel Miranda's portrayal of Hermes as saddened and trapped within a system himself. He isn't trying to cause harm, but he did anyway.

Grover and the animals. Just that whole section was great. Also, Percy's dreams I think are just the right amount of ominous each episode!

When the Nereid/Naiad shows up. The love and just care they have for Percy gets me every time.

I love the show, and I am sure once the entire series is out my overall opinion will change. But yes, this episode is the first one that left me feeling disappointed instead of practically jumping around the room.

TLDR: Pacing and tension are key elements of the show. If you let us know the monster at the beginning, we won't have the chance to become scared along with the characters. The slow realization is a key part of showing that these are children on a seemingly impossible quest!

Mini Statue Resources

I've spent a lot of time looking for miniature statues of the gods to use in my travel altars, and in my search learned that mini statues-- especially anything under 3"-- are very hard to find. A lot of people have also seemed interested in the Hestia mini I have, and asked where I got her. So I thought I would share some resources I've found for very small statues and advice for finding them yourself. I hope they'll be helpful!

Sellers I've Found

3DvoPrinting (etsy)

They have a nice selection of 3D of prints of classical sculptures, including a lot of less "popular" statues. They come between 3-5" tall, priced around $12-18. I just put in an order for a custom size (1.5-2") of the Hermes and Asclepius figures, and they offer custom larger sizes as well.

3DorisArt (etsy)

They have a large collection of prints, but my interest was in the 4" line, which range from $17 to $28. I contacted them about getting smaller prints of these and they said that was doable. I haven't ordered from them yet but hope to get a custom size Dionysus soon.

MurphicIndustries (etsy)

This is where I got my mini Hestia! They have this whole set available, and also sell figures individually. They come in 32mm, 48mm, 54mm and individual figures start at $4-5.

They sell mini garden supplies, and have a section with mini garden decor, including a lot of classical statues (I think these would probably have a spike under the base that you'd need to remove). Most of them are between 2.5 and 3.5" tall and $7-8 each. They also have a lot of mini pedestals and urns as well.

Edensart (etsy)

They sell dollhouse minis, including 1:12 scale prints of marble statues, including some classical ones. They're extremely small and so lower detail, and run around $6.60

Advice for finding stuff on your own:

Although there are a lot of resources out there for finding smaller statues, I've found getting anything under 5" very difficult and under 3" almost impossible. For 3D prints if you can't find something in the size you want, I'd suggest finding one you like in a similar size and asking about getting it printed smaller for you.

I've had the most luck looking for mini-garden, dollhouse, and gaming miniatures. Searching by height is generally useless, but including scale can be helpful.

A lot of places have the statues misnamed (the Hermes statue I ordered, for example, is listed as Apollo) or aren't identified at all, so looking for generic terms like "marble statue" "god" "goddess" "classical" etc can be helpful if the right name isn't bringing anything up.

There are also a lot of Etsy sellers that specialize in dollhouse minis that have one or 2 little statues (esp. the more popular ones like Apollo Belvidere, Venus de Milo etc.) I've only included ones here that have a decent selection of them, but there are certainly options for little statues on Etsy beyond what I've shared.

The only statue of Aphrodite/Venus anyone wants to make replicas of is the Venus de Milo, so good luck to you if you're looking for literally any other representation they are on in a million. (I've included 3 here so...)

There are also some old school gaming minis that are Greek myth-themed, such as Foundry's series, but old school minis tend to be overall much more expensive, less detailed, and generally less aesthetically pleasing.

See I disagree, I think meghan *thinks* her target audience is quiet luxury but its not. That's Kates in a way. People get a lot of inspiration from her regarding that. She's more of the yoga mom that drinks bone broth and swears by a full body infra sauce 3 times a week. She gets her chakras adjusted bi-weekly and loves a good vegan dish. She'll try any new fitness trend (including wearable items, shoes and clothing). She's far more closely reflects a San Fran early stage start up chasing large amounts of money and an eternal life span. She's appealing to the 30-40 year olds who have new tech money and don't mind spending it on adventurous shit that seems mars level weird to even New Yorkers.

So yes this merch thing worked for her, but she should have been leaving a therapy session or self defense class or even a pottery class. No body who can purchase an Hermes scarf is doing that because of meghan or her outfit, but I would bet if she wore a new work out set from Lululemon she'd get traction.

This is a very good take. And I agree she should be going to a class or a spa or something more song those lines.

Ranking the gods from season 1 of pjo

ARES. he came, he slayed, he lost to a 12 year old. I am officially obsessed with how Adam Copeland portrayed him. Scene stealer. So funny without ever doubting the actual threat that he can be.

Mr D. / DIONYSUS. It was a win for him the second the casting was revealed. Perfect adaptation honestly. Was really happy to see him in the last episode again. deserved more screentime.

HADES. very different from the book, but i liked it. He's just a lil guy who can't be bothered with his family's bullshit. I absolutely hated ep. 7 so idk if i actually liked him that much or am just clutching onto him as a saving grace of the 30 minute shit show.

ZEUS. was unsure about him cos he just looked like... some guy in a suit, but the second he spoke i was sold.

HERMES. LMM did great i just do not get why the character needed to be in the show in the first place. Added nothing to the plot except some of the worst adaptive changes known to man in history of book-to-screen adaptations

HEPHAESTUS. same as hermes. I love timothy and he did great, but what exactly was the reason to add him in? He was there for like 2 minutes and had 3 lines, so just not a lot that i can rate here.

POSEIDON. He's a dad doing the bare minimum. Yay. Idk just some guy honestly. Also why is he the only brit??

ATHENA. Didnt show her face and didnt need to. I hate her already

(Obviously if you were to analyse the characters and the plot more, you can see them in a different light and understand their significance, but this is just from initial viewings and reactions)

1) I absolutely freaking adore LO rekindled and it’s really inspiring me to finally work on my own damn comic n 2) I heard you mention flats before lineart. How does that work exactly??? I use lineart to let me fill in color quickly but I’m always down for trying new methods to learn!

Also it's basically exactly what it sounds like, I put the colors down first before the lines! Sometimes I'll do lines first if there's a spot I'm struggling to figure out with just color, but I find most of the time doing color first helps me block out the shapes better than if I had started with lines. Here's an example with panels of Hermes from Ep 30, before he had all of the lines and rendering added !

This is basically what all of our panels look like at the start, just solid blocks of color that we shape out and then finalize with lineart and shading. I've found since using this method, it's helped me a lot because it works better with my brain. It also helps prevent the color from not filling in correctly as the line brushes we use are pretty textured so the fill bucket doesn't detect gaps quite as well as it does with my other pieces and comics that have smoother lineart. That said, if you try it and don't like it, don't sweat it ! Do whatever works for you :)

1. I love the 1/4 zip, but I do not think we discuss the full zip hiking jacket nearly enough.

2. I love his coats from season one. This one reminds of 1930s/1940s cinema. It's giving Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca. It's a slay. But the long black coat with the red lining I think says a lot about Aaron and his self expression. He's dressing to a specific standard, partly a dress code, and partly how he feels he needs to dress. But, the little pop of colour and the patterned ties give him those bits of individuality, and I love that so much.

3. His designer ties. I love to see the things budget increases for a show get spent on. (And I don't mean that sarcastically). I also went through the trouble of looking it up so yall can know too, if you didn't already, how much a Gucci tie among other designers costs. They're about $200 USD. Which is a lot. But I suppose for a man who wears ties as often as he does it's an investment. If we do some girl math, an average tie of good quality and material is between $30 and $90. So we'll call it $90. If he spent $200 on a tie and wears it at least 3 times (and he definitely will because it's a fun tie!) he's basically saved $70.

Also on my last rewatch I was paying more attention to the other ties he wears when he's not wearing Gucci and I believe he also has at least 2 Hermes ties. And it's harder to tell, but I believe one of the more plain ones may be Louis Vuitton. Hermes ties run about the same as a Gucci tie. LV ties start at about the same, but the ones most similar to what I could see in the show are up to $100 more. But he works hard. He deserves it!
