Random Bucky-related Fact I Uncovered:
The house on the left corner there is 169 Clinton Street (circa 1935), Brooklyn, where H. P. Lovecraft stayed 1924-1926. The area’s multiculturalism horrified him so much he had to write The Horror at Red Hook (1927) about it.
Why's this interesting?
Because if you look at this prop dog tag for Bucky in the MCU...
...You'll see that that next-of-kin address ^ for Bucky
Is two houses down, behind HP Lovecraft's place, on the street you're looking down at the far-left of that image up there. ^
So the area HP Lovecraft found horrifyingly multicultural in the late 1920s, that's where Steve and Bucky were growing up! 😊

Husband and I are finally catching up on the new season of Our Flag Means Death, only a couple months behind everyone else on the internet. Otherwise, I just finished The Tudors as a something-on-in-background-while-I-cross-stitch show. Back when it was airing I didn't get past season two, so I was pleasantly surprised that it got a bit better in later seasons. Not more historically accurate, but... better.
Fic you’re currently reading:
I'm slooowly savoring @sparkagrace's Treading Water, trying to not catch up too fast before it's complete. But aaah, I'm so happy it exists. Lane Lines was such an immersive, rich AU; getting a meaty sequel to it is an absolute treat.
Next on your to watch list:
I still haven't worked up the energy to watch season two of The Bear, even though it's so good and I know I'll like it. I'm on month five of work being a neverending stress cyclone, and I just can't get myself to watch the show where work is an endless stress cyclone for every character, but with knives and open flames.
Current obsession:
Still forever on my Stucky bullshit. I'm also still in the depths of whatever this new Henry Cavill hyperfixation is. This was probably evident by the fact that I just admitted to watching all four seasons of The Tudors in the year 2023.

She’s not being a badass woman by wanting revenge, she’s just blind to her faults and mistakes.

On the other hand, he has an uncontrollable crush on the cute blond wedding planner who lives next door.” - what a wonderful, fluffy, delightful fic!!!!

Steve, it’s not your fault, Sam had tried to say, before Steve cut him off, and Steve doesn’t think that’s untrue so much as it’s irrelevant; fault’s got nothing to do with it. It’s just—wrong. It’s wrong. Steve couldn’t wrap his head around it the first time, how wrong it was. Steve should have gone first. Was supposed to. Bucky could have carried on without Steve, he knows, but Steve without Bucky is a zero sum. There should never be a world that Steve is in and Bucky isn’t.

Mod comments- Wordlessly sad and fairly graphic, so heed the tags. It’s extremely historically accurate and so well written, and despite how dark it is, it leaves the reader with hope.

There’s a breeze too, the freshest air Bucky has breathed in months. It’s chaos outside, a clamor of voices in languages both familiar and foreign. Bucky is glad to ignore it, glad to trust that the Captain will take him to safety.
On April 29th, 1945, US forces liberate the concentration camp Dachau. But Captain Steve Rogers and his Howling Commandos have a more specific mission - the rescue and rehabilitation of prisoners experimented on by Arnim Zola, among them, a man named Bucky.

Mod comments- Holy fuck I love epistolary works, and this one is a goddamn masterpiece. Prax’s imitation of Bucky’s writing voice is beyond perfect, and the fic really reads like a real wartime memoir and literary classic. Sad and upsetting, so read the tags. It captures the horrors of war in a very visceral and touching way.

Mod comments- Literally probably my favorite fic, ever. I’ve probably reread it at least 10 times. An unforgettable and unique take on them post TWS, and the definitive text of awkward old super soldiers, a multifaceted and perfectly characterized Bucky, Steve being Sad, Sam being done with their shit, Romeo and Juliet Type Feelings, a Mexican Suicide Pact, and a coupla of Goddamn Kids.
It’s six in the morning, and Steve is heading out on a run when he nearly trips over a bouquet of sunflowers on the front steps of his brownstone.
For a second paranoia takes over, and he kicks the flowers a little, waiting for them to explode. They don’t. They also came with a card, which he picks up. The front of the card has a tasteful picture of the Brooklyn bridge at sunset. It’s very nice and sedate, like the kind of card you would buy to give to your boss. On the inside someone has written a short message in big, shaky block letters.
I AM SORRY FOR SHOOTING YOU.
Steve sits down hard on the steps.

OKAY. So. @saathi1013 tagged me to list my 5 favorites of my own fics. I HAD written a BUNCH about it, but then Tumblr ATE IT LIKE THE DEMON WEBSITE IT IS, so here’s a redo:
Follow - 140K of shockingly historically accurate stucky. I was frustrated by how few fics took us through their whole relationship--childhood to teens to adults, peace to war, through the separation and reunion again--so I spent months researching and writing this. I can see a lot of its flaws from here, but I still love this more than anything else I’ve ever written.
Tendu - 50K of lesbian ballerina MCU AU, Natasha Romanoff meets Pepper Potts and fights her internalized homophobia as well as her fear of losing the career that means everything to her. TOTAL labor of love, took me over a year to write, and God I love it so much. I put so much time and attention and thought into the details. Every character is a little jewel plucked from the Marvel universe’s crown.
Et in Arcadia - 4K of ACD Sherlock/Watson. I have loved Sherlock Holmes since fourth grade, I’ve read the books so many times I have sections memorized, and when I realized at some point that you could read it as QUEER without really having to adjust canon at ALL, I was like HOT DIGGITY and I never looked back. This is my most recent completed fic, which is probably why I love it so much right now, but I also think it’s a pretty good one.
This Quiet Darkness - Longmire, so guaranteed to appeal to a very small group of people! saathi dragged me into this itty bitty fandom. But the thing is, PRUDHOE BAY. Prudhoe Bay. Guys. My dad is an Alaskan from the backass of nowhere. He worked the North Slope for a year or so before deciding he needed to see the sun and making his way to the lower 48. I’ve been hearing North Slope stories since I was a baby. So when they mentioned it on the show, I was like AW HELL YEAH, cram the things I know about Prudhoe Bay into a story with a healthy poly relationship? yeah!!!
Love Stories for Tedious People - Far and away my most popular story, 40K stucky AU in which Steve is an emergency room doctor. It’s been translated into Russian, by a Russian ED doc who said it reflected their life altogether too well for comfort. It’s about coming to terms with how burn-out affects your life. I banged this out in less than six weeks while starting to write Follow because I wanted to write something self-indulgently medical, and boy howdy was I wrong about which one people would like and relate to more! But I’m glad it gets a lot of love, because I love it, too, with all its flaws and imperfections.

Absolutely! I’m not super deep in the fandom so I’m probably not the *best* person to ask but here are some ones I love:
Siege by ftmsteverogers
This is to me just the quintessential ‘the Winter Soldier trying to adjust after Cap 2′ fic. It’s all Bucky’s POV which is so hard to do but done so well, and it explores a REALLY interesting idea about his character. I have so very many feelings about this fic, it’s an absolute favourite. One thing I love is it allows a little darkness to creep into Steve’s character, which I love because of that one line in First Avenger after Bucky dies where he says that he won’t stop until every Hydra agent is dead, and as a viewer you’re like WOOOW. He’s still mostly a dreamboat in this, but yeah, they’d do anything for each other. 10/10.

If you’ve ever read Winter’s Tale this has similar vibes in that it’s 30s Brooklyn and really well done magical realism. It focuses on Steve and Bucky as the characters they are pre-war and the Captain America storyline just isn’t a thing. Bucky’s POV. A bit of internalised homophobia that gets resolved. This fic is just really freaking beautiful. Not least because it reads like a freaking Murakami and the characterisations are great.
Satellite (I’m Part of You) followed by The Arsonist’s Choir by Brenda
Satellite is a really zoomed in look at the moments immediately following the fight with Tony in Civil War and it’s so lovingly done. Arsonist’s Choir is a continuation (but can be read alone if you want, though Satellite is awesome) and the interactions between Steve and Bucky are fantastic. It’s from Steve’s POV, and deals heavily with Bucky’s decision to go back into cryo and his motivations. The only thing is I wish there were another chapter just because I’m a sucker for 2k of closure - but it does end well.
Kissing Practice by Venusdoom3
I just finished reading this and it’s so freaking cute. I’m a fool for hardcore pining and Bucky is so in love, dammit. Plus, I love fics that gives glimpses to their relationships across the three main phases of their life: pre-serum in Brooklyn, post-serum during the war, post Winter Soldier. It’s hard to keep Bucky feeling contiguous through all that but he is here.

Pre-war, pre-serum. Bucky dealing with his feelings and the historically accurate homophobia around them. Short at about 2k, introspective, lovely imagery, and one of my favourite characterisations of pre-war Bucky Barnes.
What Kind of Man by eidheann
So there are two ways, to my mind, that stories of post-Winter Soldier Bucky go. Either ‘Bucky Barnes’ remembers himself and all the WS stuff is buried in psychological programming and trauma, OR Bucky Barnes remains lost to the past and save for a few emergent memories, the Winter Soldier, James, or whoever, is like a new person. Civil War went with the first option but I always was intrigued by the identity issues of the second. This fic, though it’s brief and falsely advertised as smut with plot, is one of my favourite explorations of the second option. And Steve’s POV is very well done.

So all of the ones I’ve rec’d are canon compliant or at least canon divergent, because I’m partial to that, so here’s an AU. A High School Reunion AU, to be exact. The guys are lovely and heartsick and adorable in this, but my favourite part is probably Peggy and Natasha meeting and being diabolical together - and being good bffs to the boys. This fic is so full of goodness, just read it
