I love the new Elrond definitely but I do have some concerns like they’re changing a lot of stuff which I get cause it’s an adaptation and they never stick to the book materials.

Rereading the hobbit after reading Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion for the first time is unlocking special new emotions that I cannot describe. They’re close to EXU Calamity emotions, but so much stronger.

The Hobbit introduces Elrond like this. “The master of the house was an elf-friend—one of those people whose fathers came into the strange stories before the beginning of History, the wars of the evil goblins and the elves and the first men in the North. In those days of our tale there were still some people who had both elves and heroes of the North for ancestors, and Elrond the master of the house was their chief.”

It’s vague and it sets the scene. It’s enough.

But like, that’s the Silmarillion right there! “wars of the evil goblins”, you mean the war against Morgoth? The battle of sudden flame, the fall of Gondolin, Fingolfin’s duel, every high king and kinslaying and death contained in a line. Elrond’s ancestors aren’t just some “elves and heroes of the north”, they are Beren and Luthien and Melian and Earendil! No one but Tolkien knew back then, but they did happen and they did matter!

The Silmarillion is out there now though, and so many people have read it. I read it. Maedhros and Maglor’s kidnap family mattered. Elros and Numenor mattered. There used to be a continent called Beleriand and a dog that talked three times and entirely too many grandchildren of Finwe. And it’s all gone now.

What’s left? Well, there’s two swords in a troll cave. There’s a wandering Maia with a fun hat. There’s a shiny stone that feels suspicious now, even though I know Tolkien wouldn’t have put a silmaril into a story so casually. Lastly, there’s Elrond, and he’s as kind as summer.

Elrond is as kind as summer.

I love how the entrance to Rivendell is shown in the Hobbit movies– the path is clearly enchanted; the geography is wonky, and the passage only shows up when Thorin & co really need to escape danger.

I feel like this is just how Rivendell works– there are no set pathways in and out of the valley, strange corridors and hidden passages to it just show up when and where they're needed. People who have been to Rivendell before can usually find their way back pretty easily, but even they usually can't explain exactly how they got there. Only the residents of Rivendell can reliably lead others to the valley– and Galadriel, because she's Galadriel. It usually takes Gandalf a while to find the path. He's convinced Elrond just like messing with him.

This is very much Elrond channeling his inner Melian. Doriath was extremely hard to get into, but in the normal fairy way where you just get lost in the woods endlessly if you're not welcome, and the forest parts for you if you are. Elrond saw that and decided to spice things up a little for his realm. You know, some impossible rock formations, a few very strange trees, landscaping that is vaguely beyond mortal comprehension, all that.

Rivendell's residents think it's great. Most outsiders think it's a little creepy.

I think I don’t need to go into all the reasons Elrond seems to be universally adored in this fandom. Elrond’s the best. But I will say one of the most weirdly in character things about Elrond is that he is sort of a unifying figure in the Tolkien fandom just as he is in universe. The movie fans? Some of us may have issues with certain out of character things he did but clearly something about his portrayal was compelling in and of itself because he defo has a movie fanbase as well (a lot of this could be put down to Hugo Weaving apparently being a bit of a DILF but as a lesbian I couldn’t possibly comment).

People who’ve read Lotr and the Hobbit? How could you not love him, kind as summer, excellent father, wise and welcoming, what isn’t there to like? He’s great.

And Silm fans….. oh god do we love him. Whichever fanbase your coming from, wherever you focus your attention, chances are you interact with Elrond content. Feanorian Apologists? Adoptive feral child of Maglor and Maedhros that flaunts his upbringing wherever possible. Nolofinwean stans? Turgon 2.0, loving father, lives in a hidden valley, largely defensive before all else and less inclined to rush into things. The adult in the room essentially. Edain obsessives? Descended from all of them, and the Numenor connections and parallels are enough to scream into the void about for eternity. Sindar fans? Luthien come again, anybody? Seriously though, he’s such a Melian just look at that shit with the river.
