The one Good Omens head canon you will never talk me out of is that Crowley's snake form is a giant, black and red morph of some type of hognose, and whenever something happens that he Does Not Want To Deal With, he plays dead in the most dramatic and unconvincing manner possible.

Doesn't matter what form he's in at the time. He just flops on his back, tongue out, maybe some pitiful death throes for good measure. You can try to get him upright again all you like, but nope! Flips himself right back over. Belly up plus tongue out equals dead, and that's what he is. Dead. Ever so dead. Far too dead to be bothered with your nonsense.

Aziraphale was absolutely thrown by this at first, but these days he just steps over his beloved's "corpse" and ignores him until he gets bored and "resurrects" himself.

I'm reading up about hognose snakes rn and I want one SO BAD but I can't have one both bc my gf has a phobia of snakes and also bc I don't think I have the heart to feed it mice 😭

#i dont think ill ever really have the opportunity to get a snake with my gf's phobia #but if i did it would need to be an insectivore #apparently hognose snakes can also eat eggs but id imagine an egg only diet wouldnt be very nutritionally balanced for them #and im not about to buy an animal just to neglect it #(they can also eat amphibians and lizards but that can introduce parasites to them AND i still dont think id have the heart for it) #theyre so cute tho omg. they crawl in between your fingers and take little sippy sips from water #ideally their startle responses wouldnt be something id ever see bc i wouldnt want them to get stressed out but even THOSE are cute #they flatten themselves to the ground like a pancake to make themselves look Bigger but they actually just look cute #they flare their neck out to pretend to be a cobra but when baby snakes do it its adorable #instead of biting to ward off predators they hit them with their noses #and if that doesnt work they full on play dead. Fun Fact: Hognose snakes are dramatic lil guys!

I am particularly fond of the snakes known as hognose snakes, and my reasons are both understandable and correct.

This is a hognose snake:

They use these adorable snoots to burrow under sandy soil using a sort of nuzzle-y motion. They then use these burrows as a place to sleep at night, hibernate in the winter, and lay their eggs.

Plus, they come in a variety of delightful colours!

We've got brown! Beige! Yellow! Black! Red! Orange! Tan! Kinda greenish! Orange again!

And, to be clear, the snakes pictured above are wild snakes. No selective breeding by humans in these noodly bois! At least, not in these specific individuals. probably. I guess a few of them could be escapees... 

But most importantly: These snakes know the true meaning of DRAMA

Hognose snakes are actors, first and foremost. When they feel threatened, the first thing they do is puff out their neck into a hood.

This superficially makes them look like a cobra, but what they’re actually trying to do is make themselves seem bigger, and therefore scarier. Possibly those dark spots on their neck helps with that! 

Any resemblance to real-life Eurasian cobras, real or fictional, is purely coincidental

Also, it makes its mouth do this:

honestly, if I didn’t already know that hognose snakes were harmless, this would ABSOLUTELY make me leave it the hell alone 

But if all of that^ is unsuccessful at scaring away the predator, the hognose snake pulls its signature move: playing dead

If you think that is a lame signature move, then you are wrong, because hognose snakes put EVERYTHING into their performance and I love them for it.

There's writhing! There's dramatic noises! There's flipping onto their back and opening their mouth wide and letting their tongue hang out! There's excreting a combination of  intentionally smelly substances!!! Truly a master of the art of being left the hell alone (*^▽^*)

Personally, my favourite part of this is how they insist on rolling onto their back, even when they are rolled back onto their stomach. 

Seriously, if you try to roll them right-side-up, they will flip back over. It's as though they believe that a good, proper dead snek MUST be on its back, obviously.

Sadly, the hognose snake may have made itself too scary, according to humans.

Out of fear, these snakes are commonly killed on sight 😔. I once heard someone proudly brag about how they’d killed a dozen cobras! In southern Ontario! Where cobras do not live! This is both extremely frustrating and deeply sad.

So just to highlight: hognose snakes are completely harmless. They’re just pretending to be fearsome!

And now some bonus facts to help raise us out of that downer:

Hognose snakes are toad specialists! Their favourite food is toads, which is unusual, because toads are poisonous. Hognose snakes deal with this by force of will and also, at least two amino acid substitutions, maybe (Mohammadi et al. 2016). Possibly a few other things help with this, also (Feldman et al. 2016).

Also, I have a confession: hognose snakes... are venomous. Technically.

They are known as rear-fanged snakes, which means they have fangs aaaall the way at the back of their mouth. The venom they produce seems to be toad-specific, and is considered to be harmless to humans unless you happen to have an allergy but that's the exception rather than the rule

Also, hognose snakes are big cowards NOT aggressive and I've never even heard of anyone getting bit by a one (outside of one feeding mishap, which we can all agree was an ACCIDENT). 

The series of events that would need to occur for you to be envenomated are so unlikely and bizarre that I assume you would have to be TRYING to get bit.

What's the absolute dumbest thing one of your snakes has ever done? Like, you look at them and go 'how have you even survived this long' levels of dumb? Or 'man, you're lucky I love you' levels of dumb? Because I love snakes. I do. But they make bad life choices so often.

Ohh man. This is now a callout post for my idiot snakes.

Miriam the ball python: gets too excited at food time so she snaps at the feeding tongs and scares herself and we have to postpone eating for a few minutes so she can calm down. This happens like once a month.

Fucking Fred the ball python: regularly pops the lid off his humidity box because he just. Cannot figure out where the entrance hole is. I made the hole as big as I possibly could for him and he just cannot find it. He can get in fine, but to get out he has to like press himself against the lid until it just pops off. It's ridiculous.

Stede the Trans Pecos ratsnake: is both the clumsiest ratsnake I've ever met and absurdly overconfident in his climbing skills. I've had to give him softer substrate because he kept climbing all the way up to the top of his branches and then falling down and I was worried he'd break a rib. I wound up putting climbing shelves in his enclosure because he kept trying to support his entire body weight on a skinny branch and he'd scare himself when he fell down.

Wonambi the Children's python: loves to hang upside-down from the branches in her enclosure like some kind of sentient stalagtite. Then she stretches too far towards the ground and falls down.

Ed the Mexican black kingsnake: regularly tries to eat his water dish and gets, like, really frustrated when it doesn't work.

Viago the California kingsnake: when he was a tiny baby, he liked to climb up the wires of his temperature and humidity probes. He's too heavy to do that now, but he hasn't forgotten that he used to be able to, so I sometimes just hear the soft thwap of him trying to climb the wires and just slapping himself against the wall.

AJ the rainbow boa: loves to burrow under his water dish. This isn't a problem, I keep his substrate super deep there so he can. The problem is when he gets excited he'll un-burrow himself at the speed of light and slosh water everywhere and then be like ":0 why am I so wet"

Heskel the boa constrictor: absolutely HAS to eat first on his feeding day because if he smells the other snakes getting food and has to wait, he'll get way too excited and try to leap out of his enclosure and that's just not fun for anyone

Sirius the western hognose: tries to eat the walls of his enclosure during mealtimes. Every. Single. Time. He's lucky he's adorable because there is nothing going on upstairs.

And my absolute favorite:

Bentley the boa constrictor: a few months ago I gave him a few quail chicks as a treat, and what we usually do is I let him strike and coil one and then I put the others down in his enclosure for him to find. He ate the first one no problem, and then started looking for the others. He found one, smelled it, looked like he was about to eat it - and then gently, slowly, opened his mouth and just stuck his face in the substrate. He was fine, he spat the substrate out and found the rest of his food, but...man.

So, we got a snake! His name is Whisp, and he is a yeti hognose. His hatch day is 8.20.23. He currently weighs around 10 grams and is a voracious eater. So far, he loves to climb and explore. And yes, we are in obsessed snake mom mode.

We picked him up from his breeder, but he had been listed online, so here are his listing photos from the breeder:

Yes, his spots are very purple and his cheek markings are pink and look like he is blushing. It's adorable.

My camera doesn't do a good job photographing him.

And this video of him exploring is my favorite thing right now.

Top 5 friendly snakes <3

Lets start from the fact that snakes are not big fans of snuggles and cuddles. They are mostly solitary creatures and generally view human contact as a threat, they can ,however, be accustomed to handling and actually be docile and calm (and sometimes enjoy your company)...

5. BOA CONSTRICTORS

This thicc boy is one of my favorite species of pet snakes. They are not only adorable, but also relatively easy to take care of and calm. Not to mention they are easily available and come in a load of different morphs and variations.

4. GARTER SNAKES

These are great first time pet snakes. I mean they literally live in peoples gardens eating slugs and chilling. They are your friends! Totally easy to handle and are co-habitable with other garters.

3. BURMESE PYTHONS

These. Get. BIG. Amazingly chill but BIG. Pretty easy to maintain and will need to be fed like one a month or so. I wold personally not recommend for beginners tho because of the size and the fact that they could get pretty intimidating.

2. HOGNOSES

Easy to recognize these babies by their distinctive little noses (hence the name). They're small, easy and come in great variation. I will say, however, that with the recent rise in their popularity they got pretty expensive, and reasonably so... they're pretty damn cool.

BALL PYTHONS

Say hello to my #1 favorite snake. They look like they're always smiling, they're gorgeous, and they're amazing with humans. Not intimidating and even great with kids!

oh gosh thats gonna be a lot. im gonna be excluding anything that would make this blog more personal or less tame than i want it to be but you really arent missing much there

well. first and foremost UNFORTUNATELY its a hc that im a joyce kelly truther. shes so unbelievably transfem to me at this point its hard to see her as much else. genuinely forget its not canon sometimes. oops

i also must say all of @pariskim's joyceverse tag is canon in my mind and i really recommend you go through it even if you dont see joyce the same way i do, genuinely some of my favorite fan content to consume period. yes i am also sending you over there to become a joyce truther. go.

honestly if mac and dennis could be responsible pet owners (theyll never be.) i think theyd LOVE having a snake. i know theyd go for a ball python because theyre more stereotypically "snake" than some other pet trade species, but frankly i think theyd do best with a hognose. theyre pretty social (with humans. dont keep hognoses together in a tank) idiots with huge attitude and they look god damn adorable. hognoses would also be great for them because they tend to be more food motivated! its also good for snakes to just take them out and like. set them on your bed n just chill or talk with em for an hour or so. thatd be great for mac.

i personally think that mac will only hook up with you as a fellow man if you a) can pass as older than him or b) look like dennis. yeag i think he, consciously or not, goes for people that have similar traits to dennis, physically or personality wise. if dennis let himself accept that he cares a bit too much about who mac is dating, that little fact would single-handedly make macdennis canon. dennis would tell mac to just date him if he wanted to date him so badly

not entirely a headcanon but i imagine almost all of the gang besides maybe frank has methods for getting dennis to regulate his diet a bit more instead of eating like 1 meal a day. i think mac can get dennis to eat or drink just about anything by just giving it to him in conversation. he'll just let dennis talk his ear off and continually hand him chips or fruit or even drinks or nearly any drug at all. having a small bite or drink or hit during conversation is such a reinforced habit that its natural to the both of them now.

i think dee does it by purposefully playing into her status of being "below" dennis. she'll complain about being too weak to open a peanut shell or something and he'll snatch it and do it to prove hes better and out of habit maybe has a little bite. though i imagine if theyre inebriated in any way its as easy as genuinely just feeding it to him. dennis will never admit it, because he hates his sister, but he trusts her.

joyce i think can get dennis to eat just by getting alone with him. she provides a bubble of decompression and a lack of worry for him. its also insanely easy for her to just offer dennis a huff of whatever inhalant shes been having fun with that day and i imagine that makes things easier as well

i think you could pretty easily get mac into nerd shit. just have some pretty boy be a little nerdy. get him to watch star trek itd be life changing for him even if i think a good amount of it would fly over his head at times. ttrpgs and roleplaying in general i think would be big for him

also bringing back my hc of him joining the philadelphia gay mens chorus ohhhhhh my god i need him to sing more i need him to embrace his love of singing

What pets (if any) do you think the other papa's have? Nihil probably has one of those crusty little white dogs he treats better than he ever did his kids

Oh I absolutely agree with Nihil, It's a little Bichon Frisé and he totes that dog around while he makes the twins run around pushing his oxygen tank.

Primo has birds, two canaries to be exact. One yellow one and slightly blue with more muted tones. He absolutely loves to listen to them sing while drinking his morning tea.

Secondo has a two snakes. One is a boa constrictor, he loves her so much. She's his pride and joy...outside of his kids lol. The other is a hognose snake...not because he likes them in particular, but because his Prime Mover absolutely does 😁.

Terzo has one cat, a Norwegian forest cat to be exact who is black with white spot on her chest. The kids absolutely love her and she's the best lap cat you could ask for. The siblings often find her laying across his arms while he's trying to write at his desk.

Copia...well rats of course! There's too many to count but his two most noted are Rigatoni and Gnocchi. And I've already said in a previous ask but he adores them so very much that he even has little outfits that he lets them wear. Also a small dollhouse where he likes to watch them run around having his own personal show. He also really enjoys using them to help teach the children compassion and responsibility. The rats also absolutely adore him and seem to have a way of communicating with him beyond comprehension of most everyone else in the Abbey.

Lord Voldemort was usually a master of hide and seek. However, he was starting to worry he lost his seven-year-old daughter and that if he did not locate her soon, his daughter would find trouble sooner or later. She was his daughter, after all.

Do not let the adorable face fool you. His daughter has the makings of a great witch with how cunning she was. Usually, he was proud of her for it, but today, he was not very amused.

He looked everywhere in the house, which meant the little princess had most probably jumped out the window — because he did not hear the door open and close when he counted to ten — and fled into the garden full of flowers. It was its own small forest, the garden Harriet grew and planted.

“Papa!” yelled a tiny, young voice, and Voldemort immediately drew his wand upon the urgency in his daughter's voice, “Help!”

Voldemort found the seven-year-old girl squatted beside a bush, hissing quietly. Upon closer inspection, Voldemort noted she was speaking to a small hognose snake. The snake was injured, its tail was missing. It was coiled in on itself, its head raised, its jaw open, hissing at his daughter, glaring at her, all its scales rising up.

“It won't let me help it,” said the girl, scowling in a very similar way to how Voldemort used to in his youth. The resemblance was rather uncanny to him. “It keeps snapping at me.”

“It’s injured, so it thinks you’re a predator. You’re very big and it is very small. It’s gone onto the defensive.” said Voldemort.

The girl’s lips pressed together, her dark eyes sparkling with tears. Now, his daughter looked exactly like a tiny version of Harriet, ready to cry.

“I can heal it from here,” said Voldemort. His daughter's dark eyes lit up hopefully. “If you keep its attention on you. If it senses another presence, it will flee and bleed out.”

His daughter lit up, grinning. She nodded, determined. She squatted back down while Voldemort moved away, to the side, to sneak up on the snake’s side. His daughter did as told, talking to the snake, keeping its attention on her.

Close enough at last, Voldemort cast the healing charm on the serpent. Its tail regrew on its own, the wound closing completely. The snake startled, then looked down upon its tail.

Voldemort paced back to his daughter.

“What happened to you?” hissed Voldemort softly.

“It wasss my humans...” the snake replied; its voice sounded young, more feminine than male. It was clear it was a female hatchling. “They threw me out of the box... And then a flying creature took my tail...”

His daughter frowned. She turned to Voldemort, clearly confused by the idea someone would throw a snake away.

“Why did they throw her away?” she asked.

“Most people don't understand snakes.” said Voldemort.

“But not us,” his daughter hissed softly, her dark eyes staring back calmly at his. She gave Voldemort a toothy smile.

Voldemort smiled.

“Not us.” he agreed softly, watching as the hognose curled atop his daughter's palm, apparently happy to stay there for a while.

This time, when his daughter gently encouraged the snake, the little one slithered right around her extended hand, settling itself on her palm. She had gained her trust.

As Voldemort watched the small hognose wrap itself around his daughter’s tiny fingers, he could not help but be reminded of a moment he shared with Harry.

“I once showed your mother a hognose snake,” said Voldemort. “It was white, with red eyes.”

“Like papa!” his daughter chirped, smiling. “What did mummy say when papa showed it?”

“She said: ‘How can't you love such an adorable face?’”

His daughter giggled, a sweet sound. “Mummy called papa adorable.”

“It was the snake she called endearing,” said Voldemort.

“No,” said his daughter without hesitation, eyes full of conviction. She looked very serious. “Mummy called papa adorable.”

Voldemort felt a smile curl his lips. He had not been paying much attention in that moment, staring at Harry's face and smile instead.

“I suppose she did," he said, delighted by the realization.

“Can we keep her?” his daughter asked, turning pleading eyes to Voldemort. It was a look he could never say no to.

Voldemort eyes the hognose. “Ask her first.”

“Do you want to stay with us?” his daughter asked the snake. “We have lots of snakes, and we all speak. And Nagini will take care of you.”

The light brown hognose looked with its dark eyes from Voldemort to his daughter. Then, she gave a single nod of her head, inclining her head downward.

His daughter beamed.

“Yes! Thanks, papa!” she yelled happily, and hugged Voldemort around the legs. His skeletal arms reached down, wrapping around the small girl, holding her close.

“I’m gonna show it to mummy!” said the girl, letting go of Voldemort.

Without wasting a second, the black-haired girl dashed back toward the house, yelling. “Mummy! Papa and I saved a hognose and it's staying with us now!”

Voldemort watched the girl go with a fond smile, then set down the garden path toward the house too, just as Harry opened the doors.

“Another!” yelled Harry cheerfully, hugging their daughter, lifting her up into her arms. Voldemort’s heart soared at the sight of mother and daughte. His stomach fluttered, like a duel was happening inside it.

“What’re you gonna name it?” asked Harry curiously.

“Athena!” declared their daughter. “Cus she fought off the bird like Athena!”

Harry laughed. To Voldemort, it was the most wonderful sound in the world.

Their daughter may have his eyes and the same hair colour he used to have, but her smile was Harry’s.

Voldemort reached his soulmate, nuzzled her head, winding his arms around her. Harry chuckled.

“What’re you grinning about?” she asked.

His red eyes glew. “Do you remember when I showed you that hognose?”

Harry blushed. Her green eyes shifted from his eyes and strayed across his face. She was nervous. Voldemort purred.

“You called me adorable,” he whispered against her ear, delighting in her shiver.

Before Harry could say anything — by the beetroot colour of her face, Voldemort was right — Voldemort lifted her chin with his fingers, cradling her face softly, and kissed her.

“Ewww!” said their daughter, reaching her fingers down to cover the hognose’s eyes, too.

With Harry's lips on his, Voldemort barely cared.

Sorry in advance for asking all these things 😭 but first up, your oc is cool! She’s so stylish as heck! She gives me that 80s funky/chill vibe and her hair is flawless! And I adore for bond with sasuke so much, Ahh. Would it be ok to ask about their lore together? How did they meet and bond together like mother and son? (And kakashi too! He’s papa).

Plus, I also appreciate all the Sasuke positivity so much. From your drawings to random posts. It’s so refreshing and uplifting for me. There’s to much negativity for the poor kid these days. And I greatly respect the “my son!” Feeling to for sasuke. I to get that parent vibe haha (sasuke is little guy no matter what, must squish respectfully).

Shisui was one of Akami's first childhood friends and later her first lil love. She goes w Shisui to meet Sasuke when she’s 13yr, he’s only a few weeks old but the second she holds him and his chubby baby hand swipes her chin she falls in love. Bc of her relationship with Shisui Akami spends more and more time around Sasuke— he’d be tagging along after the big kids, but she always made time for him. Even if it was 20 extra minutes before a mission or after a long day of training, she’d hide her injuries and play with him instead. She’s one of many Anbu called to the scene the night of the Uchiha massacre. The second she found him all alone she knew she was taking him home and she quit Anbu that night.  Akami never felt heard or seen as a child so she tries her best to make sure that Sasuke has a voice. She didn’t intend to take on a parental role; it just happened over the years. She’s always open about his family and ready to listen when he confides in her, she teaches him every single uchiha jutsu she knows (and eventually kakashi does too) so Sasuke can still feel connected to his Clan. She gets him through his nightmares and defends him tooth and nail, she teaches him how to cook and use a sword. No matter what, he's always gonna be her baby and she’ll be his Kami-chan. There is nothing she wouldn’t do for him.  Akami and Kakashi knew each other as kids, they did not get along until their traumas sort of forced them to see eye to eye and rely on each other.  But it wasn’t a friendship until their early-mid teens, even then it always felt like more. Shortly after she takes in Sasuke they start a tumultuous FWB only to realize they very obviously love each other. Sasuke approves bc Kakashi makes Akami happy and is always there for her (for better or worse) and Kakashi and Sasuke start to have a very meaningful connection well before he becomes his sensei.  Yes parent squad ! Sasuke deserves the world and I love that you love him too!!<3 In ATLA Akami would be a water bender, she’s a descendant of the Yuki clan so it just seems fitting for her heritage! Tho I’d be wary of her healing abilities, she’s more of a fighter and I would not put it past her to learn how to blood bend! (She was Anbu Root for a reason💀)  Sasuke is fire bb! Kakashi I go back and forth on but I think he would be fire too .I love love love love ATLA and have tried to make an au for her but I find it hard to imagine Akami interacting w the gang (They all just feel so young lol- though she’d probably like Suki and Zuko best) I think that she would get along really well with Piandao! June, Jet and Iroh too. She’d def feel some sort of kinship for Azula (ruthless + manipulative never taught to love, w similar mommy and daddy issues!🤝lol) Yes Yes! I love snakes, they are so beautiful !! When I made my oc I really wanted to have her be ostracized because of her father and resemblance so it’s so fun to play w both the beauty and monstrous qualities for her. 🐍Akami and her summons Ryū are based off of mangrove pit vipers and Copper bellied water snakes ! Always appreciate the asks, but I don't really do the "pass the message on" stuff. I'd be happy to answer though! -animals, especially long ones. Ferrets, otters, snakes (hognoses are adorable!) and corgies! I either saw a baby corgi or a corgi/wiener mix. It was smaller than usual and longer so I'm pretty sure it's the latter, though they had corgi coloring! <3 That made me VERY happy (also munchkin cats fall into this too!)

-Crafting! I do a bunch of crafts, button making, sticker making, custom PVC IDs, needle felting, crochet, machine knitting XD and probably a few I'm forgetting!

-Autistic creachure! Everything from his appearance to how he types <33

-Raves! Been going to them a lot more since moving to Seattle! Fun to just come and crochet!

-Where I live! Seattle has been amazing for me! I miss the weather of SoCal, but I'm doing so much better now that I'm not living with my parents. They're great, don't get me wrong, but living with my mother is a PAIN. I'd much rather visit for a couple weeks at a time!
