I’m sorry but I need to rant about Monster for a second. In particular I need to rant about Episode 18 and Mr. Rosso’s last line to Nina at the end.

“Killing someone is simple. All you need to do is forgot the taste of sugar.”

Out of context? Still impactful. But IN CONTEXT—bro. BRO.

Because earlier in the episode Rosso tells Nina about his past as a professional hitman and how his final job impacted him so much. We see in the flashback as he watches through his sniper rifle scope as his target puts five spoonfuls of sugar in his coffee, stirs it, and drinks it slowly, enjoying it. And this deeply impacted Rosso, because as he says, that’s the same way he takes his coffee, with five sugars. He says to Nina that watching this made him remember how his coffee tasted when he added the five spoonfuls of sugar to it. And then he ends the story saying that’s what made him stop killing. (And honestly I could make a whole other post about this flashback but I can do that later)

And the way he tells the story makes us think, “Oh, he must have spared his target and not killed him!” That’s what we’re led to believe happened. Because when he talks about his hitman days, his face is stony and cold, but outside of this, his eyes are bright and he’s smiling and he’s cheerful and warm. So obviously he didn’t do it, right? He obviously spared the man, and this gave him a new appreciation of life, right?

But then we get to the end of the episode. And when Rosso says that line, his face is once again stony and cold.

And my jaw DROPS every single time, no matter what, because the implications of this line are so heartbreaking. It implies Rosso did kill that man, even after discovering they both like their coffee with five spoonfuls of sugar. It implies Rosso was impacted by this, but not enough to spare the man’s life.

I just—BRO.
