LOVING YOU FROM A DISTANCE — TEASER.
Tumblr media
S ☆ — Heeseung has liked you for ages, too long for him to even recall how. Sure, he should be confessing now, but he couldn’t. He couldn’t, especially if you have a boyfriend. So how is he going to tell you his feelings in only a span of a year before he leaves?
2 LOVERS? — best-friend!heeseung x best-friend!fem!reader
GENRE — high school au, bsfs to lovers to ???, he fell first, she fell harder (+ sort of right person, wrong time), angst, fluff
WARNINGS — some curse words possibly, insecurities (abt looks, way they act, etc), some ppl might act shitty .. (will add more if any in actual post for the fic)
FEATURING — beomgyu from txt, sunghoon from enhypen, yoon from stayc
SOPH — since lyfad had the most votes in the poll, here is the long fic that i will be working on 😊 hope you guys think you made a good choice on picking this!! enjoy this little snippet 🤭 + thank u sona fans (or u guys) for picking one on sonas poll, as promised, here is the teaser <3
Tumblr media
"Dang, you're good. Never knew you could play," you exclaimed as he finished playing the guitar.
Heeseung smiled and put the guitar down beside him. "You know me, always good at everything, but I don't mean to boast," he said. “You really don't know your best friend, do you?"
"Seriously, you're good at everything. It's hard to keep up with you," you joked, thinking about all the skills he possessed. "I wish I could play like you."
"It's not that difficult to learn. You're a quick learner," he reassured.
Eagerly, you suggested, "Could you teach me?"
"Sure, why not?" he agreed with a smile.
Excited about the opportunity to learn from Heeseung, you both decided to take some time for a quick guitar lesson. You sat right beside him, preparing to learn a few tips.
"Alright, let's start with the basics," Heeseung said, holding the guitar and showing you how to hold it properly. He hands you his guitar, allowing you to copy what he did.
You watched attentively, eager to learn everything you can. "Like this?" you asked, mimicking his hand position.
“Exactly, just position that slightly a bit more towards this way,” he scoots closer to you, propping the item correctly in your hand. “You’re doing great!”
"Now, let's learn how to strum the strings." He demonstrated a gentle strumming motion. "Try it yourself." He hands you the pick, watching over you as you try it out.
You nervously held the guitar and attempted to replicate his strumming. The sound was a bit off, but you kept trying.
Heeseung smiled reassuringly. "You’re doing great! Perfect for a first timer."
He patiently taught you the chords, giving you encouragement and guidance that you needed. Even if you fumbled a bit, you gradually started improving the sounds. "Wow, that sounds much better now," you exclaimed, surprised by your progress.
Heeseung chuckled. "See? You're a fast learner. Just keep practicing, and you'll be playing like a pro in no time."
"I just have to teach you a few more basic chords before I can teach you a song," Heeseung said, reaching over to take the guitar from your hands. However, before he could proceed, the door swung open, revealing Beomgyu. He greeted you both with a warm smile.
"You know," Beomgyu chimed in cheerfully, "if you really wanted to learn guitar, you should've asked me." He plopped down beside you, extending a hand towards Heeseung. "Hand me that guitar, Hee."
You exchanged surprised glances, amazed by the unexpected turn of events. Handing the guitar over to Beomgyu, you watched as he effortlessly adjusted his posture and strummed a few chords.
"I've been playing for a while now," Beomgyu continued, "and I'd love to share what I've learned with you."
"You know how to play guitar too?" you asked Beomgyu in surprise.
"Of course I do. Your boyfriend knows a thing or two," Beomgyu replied cheesily, earning a giggle from you. As the playful banter continued, Heeseung couldn't help but feel a twinge of discomfort, sensing himself becoming the third wheel. However, it wasn't an entirely unfamiliar situation.
Gradually distancing himself from the two of you, Heeseung settled into a corner, observing your interaction. He wore a gentle smile, occasionally chuckling at your playful mistakes and Beomgyu's teasing scolds.
In that moment, Heeseung couldn't deny the bittersweet longing within him. He wished he could be more than just your best friend, wishing for something more.
In the corner, Heeseung's heart felt conflicted as he watched your interaction with Beomgyu. Part of him wished he could be the one making you laugh and sharing those playful moments together. He couldn't help but wonder what it would be like if he were the one holding the guitar, strumming strings that would make your heart skip a beat.

Tumblr media
━ literally dances every dance known to man more like attempts to and when i say he goes ham, he goes HAM.
━ his confidence is super contagious, so even if you're not that strong of a dancer, it will. not. MATTER. he will pull you in for a funky dance and you'll both lose yourselves in it, music booming. you guys receive some noise complaints here and there, but it's not like you can actually hear the rest of the gang sooo (unless the crew turns off the music to get your guys' attention, but more often than not, they cave in and end up joining you two instead <3)
━ ever seen those movie bits where ppl dance in their pjs and slide across the floor? yeah, thats the vibe! doesn't matter where you two are, if you're itching for a good dance, consider it done! many moments of you two trying to crack each other up included. it always involves some form of laughter and lots of tugging each other by the arms.
━ very affectionate in the way he dances and loves picking you up and and swinging you around to the rhythm. try to break free all you want, mans gets all chuckly and squeezes you tight!
━ dancing with him is an experience and he'll do anything to have you enjoy yourself!! won't hesitate to be overly cheesy in his advances if it means he gets to see you have fun.
Tumblr media
Chris Kratt
Tumblr media
━ gets so so sooo into it! he busts some moves so earnestly that he ends up tripping over his own feet more than 90% of the time and drags you down to the ground with him.
━ encourages you to let loose and does this thing where he tries to imitate your own dance moves. you've impressed him with your own moves that he can't help but want to replicate em! it derails into a competition of who can do the most impressive dance.
━ if there's room for it, mans will swing, leap and do all these flips that have him crashing literally everywhere. he gets a little shy about it—he was trying to stun you with his super cool moves after all—but he's quick to pick himself up and get back on his feet!
━ the nerd just adores it when you two dance similarly to creatures you've encountered in your adventures. blue footed boobies? peacock spiders? grebes? you've done it all!
━ makes jokes about "courting" you despite already being in a relationship with you, but c'mon, nobody can resist playing along with his shenanigans! it's not everyday you get to see him shimmy like this, so take full advantage of it!
Tumblr media
Aviva Corcovado
Tumblr media
━ admits with a light chortle that she isn't the most confident or talented dancer and to not expect much from her in the field of choreography, but literally no one cares about how "good" she can dance—she deserves to let her hair down and have herself a jammy jam!
━ if you're like her, prepare for lots of giggles as you two try to learn how to dance. eventually, the aspect of actually "learning" some moves is long gone as you two end up doing whatever comes to mind and just roll with it!
━ she feels very comfortable in her skin around you, so if you do happen to know how to dance, encourage her maximum level! it makes her feel so relieved that you wholeheartedly accept this quirk of hers that she gradually learns to not take herself so seriously! she loves showing off, so there'll definitely be moments where she'll exclaim "watch this!" before performing her own little dance move.
━ put on music like cumbias, urbano latino, tropipop or pop romanticona and she gets all giddy inside! she absolutely loves spinning, so please do take her by the hand and give her as many twirls as she'd like!
━ once shes reached the point where she's become sure of herself, she does this cute little thing where she pretends she's only met you now for the first time in forever as she asks for your hand to dance <3
Tumblr media
Koki
Tumblr media
━ the ultimate dancing queen!! enjoys making up her own dance moves on the spot and it's always the most sensational thing ever. the execution is so smooth that all her moves seem legit!
━ if you two were to dance a song made for two, you better believe she'll be the one taking the lead! very cheeky in the way she dips you out of nowhere. she thrives off being spontaneous on the dance floor and shaking her groove thing!
━ cheers you on as you dance to the sound of your own beat. she claps, whistles, woo's—the whole shabang! she's extremely adamant on making you feel goated with the sauce <3
━ the type to get a hold of absolutely anything, use it as a microphone and belt out the lyrics with you. she goes full throttle with it as if it were a real performance and for a while you two believe it to be true!
━ it's a heavy workout every time that whenever you're both done with dancing, you two just lean on each other's backs as you slowly fall to the ground, heavy breaths and all. compliment her; tease her about how she's got quite the happy feet and she'll chuckle out an airy "shut up" <3
Tumblr media
Jimmy Z
Tumblr media
━ chair dancing! chair dancing!! chair dancing!!!
━ it usually starts out with him listening to some bops on his headphones and telling you to take a listen. all it takes is you tapping your feet or bopping your head for him to disconnect his headset and blast the music out loud for the both of you to hear!
━ before you know it, you two are swirling in your own chairs—hovering literally everywhere and anywhere. a mixture of "whoas!" and laughter boom from wall to wall as you shimmy and wiggle in your respective seats.
━ loves doing this thing where you meet each other half way, outstretch your hands to each other and lunge yourselves around hq! sometimes your hands slip from each other and you're practically squealing like little kids, excitedly trying to come into contact again.
━ sure, you may bump into some walls and tech, but it's never enough to actually hurt you. mercy to anyone who happens to need something 'cause they'll literally have to zoom in zig zags to avoid a collision with either of you.

On a happier note, I am enjoying having to research baby milestones for the Midwifery Charge AU (fic and nostalgia rambles below the cut)
(which at this point, thanks to the help of a good friend, I've realised is best done as a collection of lil one shots from moments in it. I just. don't have the mental anything nor the organisation to do a multichap full fic rn. Y'all know I lose steam too easily on those and just don't do them as well as I do simple oneshots. I wrote a full original trilogy at age 10 and again at like age 21; I used all my 'full multichap project' juice too early in life AND both trilogies kind of sucked ass. RIP to them may their memory never find me again let alone be a blessing but I digress)
Bc it means I get to remember all the cute shit the cousins did when I was helping raise them and like. certain bits can be used for baby in the fic even!
Like how the oldest one learned to roll over from one direction, but then couldn't replicate it going the other way, and she would just. lose her shit wailing until someone rolled her over that way. Then she was good until oh fuck oh no, she rolled over right to left again and to her lil brain it was too different from rolling left to right, she's stuck forever oh g-oh hey someone rolled her back to her tummy. neat.
We never let her sit for more than a second or two stuck (mostly to try and encourage her to. ya know. Realise that she could in fact roll herself both ways and it would be fine. Took her time but she got there lol) and I'm just
Dying at the image of the crew so carefully taking turns watching Baby (who I'm gonna reveal bc I don't think I have yet? if i have ignore me lol, is named Basilica after Izzy's deadname (he gave her the name, there's an entire Thing abt it and little moments abt his journey as a trans man tucked into this au), going by Baz for short (thank u to the aforementioned good friend for this as a nickname for the full name, bc I was struggling to figure out how to shorten it and Baz is !!! perfect!!!) )
And she's been with them longer than expected. 4-6 months is the average that I've found for when babies learn to roll over, so maybe she's abt 5 months old at this point.
Doing tummy time with Fang and she does it! Right to left rolling over, absolutely perfect, stunning, no notes, they're gonna make her a medal but-
Oh no. She's gotta roll left to right now, and instead of rolling the other way she just panics and weeps and everyone on this ship is a big fuckin softy (i get it lol, I was with the cousins) so they keep rolling her over the other way to calm her.
Until they have a crew meeting and Jim mentions Nana telling them that sometimes, babies have to just. cry for a minute or two and learn how to do the thing. You can help, but first you have to let them try and encourage them to do it on their own. (they gloss over the fact that Jim also makes clear with this anecdote that Nana absolutely would have taught a baby how to throw a knife. And honestly, is she wrong for this? who can say, not me, but I like knives and think a baby with a knife is hilarious, so I'm biased. I'm never gonna have kids, don't worry lmao.)
Cut to everyone having tummy time while the ship is docked/anchored somewhere safeish (let's be real, for the Kraken crew, nowhere is really fully safe with all the raiding they've been doing. But Ed and Izzy and Fang all know the quieter spots other ppl have forgotten that they can rotate going to for moments like this)
In a circle, around Basilica on the blanket Frenchie designed and knit for her, while she whines and cries bc goddamn it, why is rolling the other direction so hard? So scary?
And they're all lowkey trying not to cry (Ed and Izzy the most out of all of them, for varying personal reasons that all ultimately culminate in a want for Basilica to have a better childhood than they did, including the little moments/early achievements like this) while babytalking like mad, trying to encourage her to roll the other way
It's just not happening, but juuuust as Izzy is abt to break and gently roll her over, a cannon booms in the distance
And if that adorable little shit doesn't roll left to right, then again, trying to lift her head up to see where the big noise came from. She's not even crying anymore, she's just curious!
Unfortunately, said cannon is a sign they need to head out, so they have to pick her up and get her settled in Ed's room(really Ed and Izzy's room, by this point. Are they back together in a healthy way? Not really, but they're Aware of their mutual issues and are just barely talking some of them through. or starting that process, at least) for her own safety and now she's crying bc she's so mad! She wanted to keep rolling over! She was literally on a roll, how fucking dare they pluck her off the floor so easily!!
Despite the potential incoming danger of another ship, everyone is giggling as they get the ship moving. I'm envisioning it like. U know when a baby is So Mad So Incensed, they're making those angry babbles that are loud enough to hear a room away? That sound is all they can hear aside from the waves and the far off cannon fire, and it's a mood lightener. Yeah, they might be about to fight for their lives, but listen to her! She's swearing! (I do absolutely have an idea for her first word being 'fuck' thanks to Izzy lmaooo)
And they're all as excited to escape not just for their lives, but so they can lay the blanket out again and have her show off her new skill. A little soft moment in between having to fight to save themselves or raiding for more loot (and baby gear/supplies, my god not a one of them ever thought they'd be threatening ppl for additional cloth diapers but. here they are lol.)
Anyway. Eventually I'm gonna get all the snippets posted up in an ao3 collection, including the few I've already posted here. When I get that started I'll drop a link, in the meantime I'm gonna see if I can get my brain to actually finish another oneshot for this au today lmao

my fiance pointed this out and honestly i agree w it sadly. but i dont think scene as we knew it can ever come back legitimately. there's scenecore now, sure, but its not the same; young people who werent there to genuinely experience it only do it as a sort of "retro" thing and dont have the same feeling/attitude behind it--it almost feels forced. people who Were around for the scene phase try to do it now but its as a nostalgia kind of thing. we try really hard to be genuinely scene nowadays, but as hard as we try, that era is gone and so are the genuine feelings/emotions/attitudes behind it
in the original scene phase we had, ppl were encouraged to just draw the silliest shit and not care. nobody cared about art quality as much as we do now. we drew meme faces on our ugly-ass fursonas with mismatched colors and crazy patterns that wouldnt fly very well nowadays, and unfortunately ppl cant replicate the designs like they used to either u_u LIKE...society and culture have changed! and thats a great thing. but i guess i miss some of the things we used to have too, like the lack of pressure to make incredible content (this however is also a product of its time; we only had shit like ms paint and windows movie maker, whereas nowadays kids have access to things like adobe animate and flipaclip and after effects and etc. i still dont think there should be such a pressure around this though)
it was a cultural phenomenon that will likely never come back and while this is sad its not necessarily horrible; i enjoy modern scenecore stuff myself for the most part, and i like to be reminded of my past in such a way, but theres a few things that were prevalent back then that should be left in the past and thats ok
idk what the point of this post was i think it was just me expressing how im kinda sad that scene as we knew it cant be replicated genuinely lol. ah well. i have my old sketchbooks i can look through and relive the glory days i guess

questionable quality summary of svern
heehee silly guy with problems
almost every mannerism he expresses is fabricated
his emotional experience is severely stunted and if he's not faking expression then he mostly just. doesn't express anything at All
the latter is an inbuilt feature, the former is a mechanism he developed to Fit In & Mask (which he does very well)
people still think he is a weirdo because he likes to act in ways that go against common sense, but now it's intentional so he enjoys it
absurdly smart and naturally gifted. bsders understand what I mean by this, normal people underestimate my intended scope
severely stunted emotional experience + very smart and good at things which he mostly doesn't value + people finding him strange & offputting, him finding people strange & stupid
= bored always, quickly achieves disillusionment and cynicism and struggles generally to find any value in life. therefore, nihilism
his paternal grandfather has the same issues as him and encouraged him to a) learn to act to deceive ppl (he didn't see why he should bother at first, because Why Should He Have To. seems like a them problem) and b) fake it til you make it (follow even the smallest impulse or thought no matter whether it's "real" in order to make life tolerable. search out whatever gives you some kind of feeling, real or fabricated, no matter how fleeting or temporary
besides being generally alienated and aware that people thought he was weird and creepy, which was annoying but mostly meh, babey svern was also bullied by an older cousin who is tentatively named luke but who I mostly just call The Asshole Cousin. this was not a single motivating factor for anything but did contribute as you expect and provided a source of ongoing drama growing up
for the next parts to make sense, I need to explain that he is (originally) a POKEMON OC, particularly with influence and inspiration from POKEMON RANGER SHADOWS OF ALMIA
not-so-babey svern (preteens and up) started taking advantage of the fact that he owned a ditto which could shapeshift into a copy of him and started running off looking for Excitement while his ditto covered for him. he hated his home life bc even after he started acting "normal" and people were less overtly weird about him he was resentful about the fact this was necessary :) and also he thought most of the people he was around were stupid anyways
girl your emotional walls are high and impenetrable and you trust nobody
also forgot to mention that he was a rich kid. this is kind of important for the general idea of his child/home environment oops
another very random pointless detail he really likes bugs
anyway fast forward to when he's a young adult and he goes to a certain region to study and because he's still bored as fuck he joins the local criminal organisation for funsies. under a fake identity ofc.
if you didn't realise already, "svern" is also not his legal name nor is his usual appearance how he looks as his """"real""""" identity
oh yeah he's also really good at parkour and he likes playing around with dressing in different clothes and dressing up and trying different hair and all kinds of things. wait what was I talking about
um. he joined this criminal organisation and ended up coming into contact with a Weird Fucking Rock that tldr is basically formed by a huge amount of accumulated negative emotions and which for some reason canonically has made a guy so obsessed with it that he dedicated his teenage son to it and changed his son's name in honour of it and spoke. very reverentially about it
The Rock is Weird and Causes Problems. the whole story of the game happens mostly because this rock is Weird and Causes Problems and has Effects on ppl. its name is the Shadow Crystal
anyway svern met the shadow crystal and also got obsessed with it because of the way the thing works. I've written complex lore on this on his blog which is too long and difficult to replicate here rn. tldr it interacts with emotions and desires and bypasses sense so it just. made him inexplicably fascinated. and he was like Fuck Yes finally something in this wretched world worth living for
svern then dedicated Himself to the shadow crystal :-)
this will. definitely not have Consequences

I'm reading your recently asks and honestly, I can't help but think how post-modernism was so detrimental to prevent black women from developing their class consciousness around sex and race together. It's pretty clear how what support TRA ideology isn't only homophobia and misogyny but also racism, specially the misogynoir against black women. However, instead of us, black radical women, create tools to fight our erasure and the tokenization of our particular experiences, we just counterattack TRAs bs and that's it!
We need to recover all the knowledge women before us gave us and together with other black women, develop new insights. For example, femininity is often dismissed as a tool of oppression not only because ppl don't actually believe in sexism but also because they misinterpret black women's criticisms towards the prominent white lenses women's oppression are often discussed. So, if Black women and white women have differences, femininity can also be different to both and that's a very wrong way to see the whole thing. Femininity isn't only about look pretty, femininity is the social place of the oppressed, it's not a surprised how effeminate men are targeted of violence and how MOCs deal with their feelings of being “emasculated” trying to replicate the white patriarchal family, the prime example of masculinity and femininity(Some black radical feminists like Celestine Ware made very good analysis of this phenomenon).
Because femininity(instead of female emancipation) is viewed as desirable to black women reclaim their humanity in liberal perspectives(and unfortunately, they're very abundant among black women and I think we don't discuss it enough because we have this established idea that these things are “white women bs”, not a larger liberal tendency that is present in many movements, even socialism), we can't discuss let alone fight against misogynoir and the worst part of this is that now, our experiences have been stolen by upper class white men.
I agree that we need to gather together more somehow. Black radfems could really use another collective like this for example
And you're right about "femininity (instead of female emancipation) being viewed as desirable to black women reclaim their humanity." Unfortunately because of choice feminism/postmodern individualism it can be a self enforced prison sometimes among black women, holding ourselves and each other to impossible beauty standards and calling that liberation. I agree that we don't talk about it enough.
It's hard when these days you can be considered "self hating" or accused of having "internalized misogynoir" if you critique weave/makeup/plastic surgery culture too much (as if those things are inherently "us"). It's hard when a lot of the times the goal of embracing femininity as "praxis" is the for the roundabout or just straight up approval of black men, and heterosexual black women make up the majority of us and of course they feel pressured to keep up the look when the retaliation for not doing so is vicious misogyny and sometimes violence. It's hard when everywhere I look in the media rich and famous (out of touch) black women are encouraging younger women without their privileges and advantages to rely on external validation (often from men) which can be extremely dangerous given our rates of victimization
I don't think it's a hopeless situation though, even if sometimes it feels like I'm in a tiny minority these days because black gender believing liberals are so loud. But I know other black women who are disillusioned by femininity and our lack of sex class consciousness.
And it helps to read these anons of course 🖤 Whoever y'all are dropping these analysis bombs on me please continue lol

I totally get your hang ups with writing and wanting it to be "accurate", but as a fan, I'm DROOLING to get my hands on those s3 inspired fics. People will absolutely read them and love them! Hell, there are so many s1 and s2 ideas left unexplored, id take any timeline. As a reader and fan, if the tag says it breaks canon after *event here*, I'm like okay, werk, I'm in, let's go! If anything, having had time between when a season aired and the posted fic helps to put characterization and actions in context and sometimes makes a more thoughtful fic. People go back and re-read old fic all the time and just accept it when new canon might differ a bit bc we all just want to be told a good story. I hope you feel encouraged to post and find your own joy in it, bc it means so much to ppl! It may be silly vampire stuff, but a good fanfic can absolutely give me a reason to get through the day. It means something!
Right, like... I guess the thing is, it's much harder for me to write for a canon I actually love because I feel this need to "honor" it, y'know? Most of the time when I get really into writing something, it's a canon that I feel fairly cavalier about so I don't mind if I throw out canon and get kind of creative. But damn, I love wwdits. It's one reason why I never wrote for it for so long. I didn't feel like I could add anything to what was already my favorite show on television.
s3 changed that because what I can add is LONGING but it has meant that I do a lot more canon review and try extra hard to make things "fit" with canon because... I don't really want to flout it! But I guess things have been complicated by lack of time and I'll admit somewhat shakier faith in the writers going forward.
This is why I usually don't write for things between seasons! lmao
I guess I just have to get in the mindset that I can write bizarre shit more often, even for a show that I love. This past 5+1 fic was kind of freeing at first because I was like "I'm just gonna write something fun and breezy and dumb" but then, as always, emotions happened... RIP. I am extremely predictable in that respect, lmao. I'm just too many words and too many emotions all the way down hahaha.
I'm trying to just let go and have more fun with it haha. It's dumb, I know, to feel such intense loyalty to the canon of a show that is so innately fun and silly. But I do! I want to write stuff that slides in seamlessly with the weird, funny, silly shit that I already love!
but I already know that I can't really replicate the vibes of the show (alas, I am just not funny enough and way too obsessed with Emotional Turmoil) so I should probably just do whatever I want haha.

ngl voyager gets a whole lot of very disproportional hate from the fandom and i'd hazard a guess that a lot of that is just garden-variety misogyny (and probably racism mixed in, considering how many of the most prominent characters are women, poc, or both). like, is voyager perfect? absolutely not. and no spoilers but there was a lot of executive meddling that wound up leading to the finale/conclusion being lacking and there's a lot of reasonable dissatisfaction with that--but again that was largely thanks to the execs fucking the show over and i recommend looking into that if you can once you've finished the show. but overall? voyager is trek right to its very core--it has heart, it's about family, and it never loses sight of that imo, even if some episodes are weaker or just duds (but, like, would it be a trek series without some episodes that just kinda suck but are still fun to watch???)
anyway, i absolutely love that you're getting into voyager, it is my all-time favorite trek series to this day for a lot of reasons, and i hope that ppl like that anon dont put you off bc i'd love to continue to see your thoughts as you watch the series!
Oh, it would take a whole lot more than some anons being salty that others enjoy things to turn me off :D
Thus far (I lost internet last night so I’m still only on Episode 7 of Season 2), Voyager is the Trekiest Trek I’ve watched. Which is a weird sentence, but I mean it in the way you said it’s “trek right to its very core.” What is Star Trek, if we strip the intent of the story down to its basics? It’s about exploration, discovery, that “wagon train to the stars,” wrapped up in the argument that life is fundamentally good. We have problems, but we can work past them. We have differences, but they strengthen us. Diversity is the lifeblood of the universe and the future will continue to improve so long as we embrace that.
Voyager is (again, from what I’ve seen so far!) basically a love song to that premise. I didn’t do too deep a dive because I’m trying to avoid spoilers, but I did look at a couple threads discussing why Voyager is so hated. Again and again I saw the same reason pop up: wasted potential. Now, a lot of fans left it at that (as if the answer to what potential Voyager apparently missed out on is self-evident. It’s not), but those who did expand on the idea consistently claimed that the show needed to be darker than it was, even if they rarely said it like that. Why aren’t the Federation and the Marquis at each other’s throats? Why isn’t the crew going crazy under these circumstances? Why aren’t characters getting killed off left and right in hostile space? “Anything could have happened out there and they played it safe!” but the “anything” here is always... awful. There’s this very pervasive idea that the world is inherently cruel, people are inherently divisive, that when pushed to the brink everything will fall apart... and that (while making for one kind of great story) is very much not Star Trek.
See, Voyager created an unimaginable scenario--lost in space, 75 years from home, forced to live indefinitely with strangers--and their answer to the question of “What happens?” is “People make it work.” They learn to respect one another, they uphold their ideals, they maintain a love of life and discovery, and they create a family. And that’s fucking fantastic. That’s Star Trek! I’m not going to pretend there aren’t problems with the show, with plenty more to come, I’m sure, but I don’t think this is one of them. Why do so many viewers think that hatred, horror, death, and growing jaded is the only potential here? Why would they expect that in a Star Trek show whose premise is the very antithesis of those things?
“But they don’t do enough with those things, even if they have happy outcomes.” They do plenty, they just do it in an episodic rather than serialized nature. I can point to multiple episodes where the replicator rations or Maquis differences are driving the characters’ actions. “But without that horror there’s no conflict.” There’s plenty of conflict. Hostile aliens aside, I just watched an episode where Tuvok and Chakotay are pissed as hell at one another because they fundamentally disagree over how to handle problems, but--because they’re adults with a well-tested respect for one another--they apologize and work through it. “But the characters don’t develop at all.” You mean they don’t grow harder. That’s not the same thing as no development. Tuvok is figuring out how to be more flexible, Chakotay is becoming more willing to accept cultures he doesn’t agree with, Harry is growing more confident now that he’s far from home, the Doctor is learning to see himself as a person, Paris is grabbing his second chance with both hands by making strong ties, and Janeway is learning to command and care for her crew simultaneously. I honestly believe that a lot of people think of “character development” as the character becoming a fundamentally different person, unrecognizable from where they started out. But  characters can also grow into the people they wanted to be in the first place. “We’re far from home, in hostile territory, tempted to do horrific things to survive... but no. Right now at least, we’re holding onto who we are. We’re scientists, so we’re going to explore and learn. We’re peaceful, so we’re going to make friends with as many species as we can. We’re members of a society that teaches acceptance, so we’re going to form a family on this spaceship.” That’s incredible!! Did fans miss why Seska was an antagonist in the episode she was unmasked? Because she was trying to convince them to give up everything they believe in in the name of survival, an ends justify the means argument. And the crew said no, we will not give up what we believe in just to make it through. I legit saw a ton of fans saying some version of, “I can’t believe they were that far from home and actually followed Starfleet’s rulebook.” It’s because those rules don’t exist for the hell of it. Overlooking their practical function, they’re a philosophy that the characters believe in, and they’re figuring out how important that part of their identity is to them under these circumstances. Am I willing to steal a specie’s technology if it gets us home? Am I willing to die to help another uphold their own philosophy? (Chakotay in “Imitations”). What regulations should we bend or change to accommodate our new situation? The first two things Janeway does are a) giving the guy who just came out of a penal colony a rank and b) deciding that she needs to be more familiar with her crew than is normally encouraged for a captain because she’s essentially their mom now. Developing doesn’t have to mean characters do a 180 on their initial personality, or characters getting killed off when stuff gets “boring” so that others can do edgy things in response.
Voyager upholds Trek’s premise and runs it to its logical conclusion:
Voyager has the most literal trek--a trek back home.
Voyager has the most diverse crew--a woman Captain, Native American First officer, black Vulcan, Asian-American communications officer, and a White Dude pilot that realizes he wants to be soft and kind towards those who took a chance on him because Toxic Masculinity who?
Voyager has the most literal family--not just a 5+ year mission, but a crew who expects to raise the next generation. They have no choice but to work together, so they indeed come together rather than pulling apart
Except they do, of course, have a choice. In “The 37′s” the crew is allowed to stay on the Earth-like planet with a city of other humans and Janeway is convinced that a sizable number will choose that. After all, they may never get home and this is a safer, kinder future for them. In fact, the real question is whether so many will stay that they can no longer run the ship... but Janeway would never dictate her crew’s choices in that manner. So she swallows her worry down, opens the door...
... and finds that not a single person decided to stay behind. And the show has ensured we understand that this is not just because they all have some unshakable belief that they’ll get home (many don’t), but because this is their family now. This is home.
And fans want to toss that out for a generic, gritty, sci-fi adventure where hope is scarce, the universe is cruel, and people need to be pushed to the limit just to admit that they maybe, sort of, like each other?? Obviously like what you like, but that’s a hard pass for me. I’ll take the bridge crew comforting each other in “Twisted,” thanks. Besides, we already have shows like that. And we already have DS9 which grapples with many of those dark, pessimistic themes. Voyager feels like a breath of fresh air, even within the breath of fresh air that is Star Trek as a franchise. It’s a show that says, “Yes, when everything goes wrong people will come together. They will love each other. They will make it through.”
What’s more Star Trek than that?

I know I don’t post but I wanna praise My Hero’s world building so bad / a Bakugou Katsuki appreciation post.
I wanna talk about society, specifically it’s views on heroism.
Bakugou and Deku are products of their society obviously. But what I don’t think people see is that they’re meant to be different extremes of the same problem.
Hero worship.
The problem is that society has given a specific set of criteria that defines a hero... ie a Licence. It’s the whole thing Stain despised, the idea that a hero no longer can be defined by their deeds or who they save but by a government issued card for passing a test. It completely takes away from the concept of a hero existing for the people and turns it into straight capitalism.
There’s a quote that I heard and can’t remember where it came from that goes along the lines of ‘A villain can exist without a hero, but a hero cannot exist without a villain.’ Which I think is true, being a hero revolves around the existence of villains but that’s entirely ignored in BNHA’s world.
And those heroes are glorified. Put on a pedestal by civilians, and I’m not saying they shouldn’t be, they’re heroes but what it results in is expectations for the next generation to live up to. So children are encouraged to be like those hero’s and unwittingly the parents place value on children based on their quirks. They’ve internalised this idea that Good quirks = greatness. And it’s not something new, often times fiction is a reflection of reality, because reality gives context for the issues within that fictional world. You’ll always find things that remind you of the real world. Here this idea that what you’re born with biologically determines greatness reminds me of how Chinese family’s used to value male babies over female babies, simply because that’s part of my culture. Others might read into it differently. These issues are transcendental, that is why there can be so many interpretations.
Anyway, willingly or not, the adults perpetuate this idea of Good Quirk = Greatness, thus stigmatising No Quirk/ bad Quirk = Failure.
Deku is quirkless, he’s the opposite of what society wants and therefore suffers at the hands of hero worship. He’s pushed aside as the minority, and if you think about it that 20% of the population being quirkless is going to mainly consist of the older generation since quirks are genetically inherited so he’s really insulated, I wouldn’t be surprised if the first person he met his age who was also quirkless was Melissa (From The Two Heroes movie). His own mother telling him she’s ‘Sorry’ after he finds out that he’s quirkless only backing up this idea that he’s different and that he should be pitied. And we look up to our parents, so coming from Inko, Izuku was on the way to internalising that view also. And in some ways he has, I might be wrong about this but when he finds out that Melissa is Quirkless he apologises to her also, he’s doing to others exactly what had been done to him because that’s what humans do, we replicate behaviour.
Bakugou is exactly what they want and from the moment he’s gotten his quirk he’s not only been put on a pedestal by peers but by adults too, adults who should be his superiors are putting him above themselves, no wonder he gets an inferiority complex. He’s told he ‘will be a hero’. Unfair expectations to ever put on a child who hasn’t had the real world experience to decide his own career just yet. And so it manifests into an inferiority complex that the show actually admits to him having. He was never given any other option than to be a hero.
He was told for his whole life he’d be the best so to see someone who was always behind him move forward made him feel inadequate obviously, his lashing out isn’t excused by society’s involvement but can explain it. He’s working on it though. Working with Deku. Helping him improve. He’s shown character development. And it’s not just that, he’s driven solely by the idea of ‘winning’ which some might see as conceited but ‘winning’ is vague, it has no meaning, he chooses the challenge, he’s the only one who can define what ‘winning’ means to him. Some might think ‘winning’ means glory, or money or fame and he wants to be No.1 so there’s an aspect of that but it could just mean no casualties, everyone surviving, everyone being saved. Which I think is interesting.
Something else I think is admirable is that in his mind all opponents are just that, opponents. That’s why he goes all out when fighting Uraraka during the Sports festival, he said it himself. That it doesn’t matter that she’s a girl, she’s a girl that shouldn’t be underestimated. He doesn’t see her as weak. Even when the crowed and Present Mic got mad at him for being rough while fighting her. A fucking feminist Icon.
And he’s not just the typical 2 dimensional bully. He’s canonically got the best grades in the class, above Iida even. He goes to bed at reasonable times (8:30) most of the time. He studies, he even helped Kirishima. He works hard and it’s not just a natural talent which makes his character even better.
He feels guilt for being the catalyst for All Might’s down fall. They both idolised the hero and he felt like a fucking BURDEN. The self awareness he has is impeccable, understanding that he cannot control everything and being so angry about it, and why? Because he was told he could do anything he put his mind to, and he was discovering for the first time that that was a lie, that those adults were liars.
And when the villains kidnapped him he told them to fuck off. He was a hero through and through. He wouldn’t join them.
He’s a hero. A terribly misguided hero born from unrealistic expectations of children
He’s the epitome of gifted kid syndrome. He’s got a complex and major anxiety issues because of it. Imagine being told that they’re better than everyone else your age as a kid? You’ll believe it. Of course you’ll think you’re better bc the adults told you you were.
And it contrasts so well with Deku, Because their issues are due to the same societal pressure albeit different sides of that same scale.
That’s why ppl like him. He’s trying but just like Deku he was given an unfair disadvantage
He’s as much of an underdog. He’s a child who’s unlearning everything he’d been taught about himself.

2, 18, & 19 for the long answer ask?🥺✨
lsfjskjfs ahhh thank u :DDD (also now this is my chance to tell you how much i love YOUR blog omg)
2. What’s your top five songs at the moment and why?
OOF. well rn im listening to Love Story (taylors version) so thats gotta be one of them lol.
i also really like Good Life by OneRepublic and On Top of the World by Imagine Dragons because they r very good songs. i listen to them a lot whenever things Go Right in my life so i guess i also have good memories related to them.
theres this instrumental piece from the soundtrack for The Crown, called Sisters, and i cannot stop listening to it. i cant really explain bc words??? but i lovelovelove it more than i can say. its been on repeat for like a month now, at least. and while we’re on instrumental pieces: Gwen and Arthur’s Theme from Merlin is just. so many chefs kisses omfg...
18. Describe an essay/story you wrote in school
omfg ok... if its ok im gonna do both an essay and a story if thats ok bc i LOVeD gr.12 english and was really happy with a few of my things. idk how specific u want the description so im gonna get really specific omg feel free to not read this lskjfslkf:
welp one of the last essays i wrote in high school was about the great gatsby. it was like. 2.4k words long, and all about truth vs. reality and gatsby’s journey from creating this ideal life for himself in his head and trying to replicate it in real life and how it all eventually crumbled bc real life cant be ideal and blah blah blah. basically, i was just describing how he daydreamed and then his eventual demise in not being able to accept that the daydreams would never be perfectly replicated in the real world. it was a critical analytical essay and i basically just followed gatsby’s life in each paragraph i think? except we were encouraged to make it a universal thing, not a character study, so by “followed his life” i mean i just used diff parts of his life as my pieces of evidence lmfao... the first paragraph was about how ppl build up their ideal lives in their head, the second paragraph was abt how with the right incentive ppl seek to actually build said ideal life but...outside their head... and the third paragraph was the inevitability of reality falling short of the perfectness they’d imagined in their minds (i mostly used his relationship w daisy as the evidence for that last one lmfao). anyway, it was called “how to save a life” bc i thought i was funny w the whole ideal life crumbling and... the end...anyway idek. i was really proud of that essay, i liked my ideas and it was fairly easy to come up with. wording it was a bitch and after i handed it in i remember reading the doc and not understanding a single sentence and then panicking but. thats not important i got 100 so go me!!. (also: yes i did in fact pull it up to answer this bc i forgot kfjslkjfslkj)
anyway. so gr. 12 english was especially fun bc that was the year it wasnt all about essays. based on the text we read, we either got essay prompts or story prompts. for frankenstein, we got like three pages of quotes and were told to pick one and write a creative piece on it. i chose “I shall commit my thoughts to paper, it is true; but that is a poor medium for the communication of feeling”. anyway, i split the quote up into three parts and used those as page breaks to break up three diff sections. the whole thing was just three different stories of three different people in three different situations encountering the same problem. a girl who was trying to write a eulogy for her mom but not knowing the right words to use to do her mom justice, a boy with an oversensitivity issue trying to journal his thoughts but not being able to describe the way it feels properly, and an artist who’s trying to describe an art piece of hers but not knowing how to with words. i was really happy with that one too. :)
(unrelated but i also wrote an essay on j*an j*ques r**sseau and bitched about him the entire essay lmfao but anyway)
19. Whats sole life advice everyone should know?
man, ive barely been alive for 2 decades i jfslkfjslkjfks idek. heres one thing i would have loved to hear at some point: it’s okay to fail at some things, and it is okay to fail at them more than once. heres something ive just learned myself, i guess: people, more often than not, really appreciate it when you wish them a happy birthday, or tell them ‘good job’ or whatever. even if it feels awkward or embarrassing to say it at first.
lkjksjfsk sorry im really not one to go to for advice lmfao

Do you have any tips for getting an audience of tumblr or Twitter. Sometimes I just get frustrated when a drawing I spent 6 hours on gets 3 notes or 2 likes and a retweet.
i think it’s really hard to have one size fits all advice for something like this — the internet is so vast, i only really know how to navigate my own specific niche of it, and different artists will always appeal to different audiences, so stuff that worked for me might not work for you. BUT i can try my best — i just can’t guarantee any of this is replicable bc especially with the new age of incomprehensible algorithms i just never know what’s going on at any given time
first off, a big disclaimer for transparency: a lot of my Big follower gains have been from my Hashtag Relatable mental health comics getting tons of notes. i do NOT!!!!! recommend making mental health content to try to get popular!!! i think doing so will put fucking worms in your brain!!! it will poison you and your brain will dribble out your ear holes like soup. i think that it is already complicated enough to navigate all the weirdness of like... making vulnerable stuff like that available for consumption, and doing it in Hopes of going viral and getting lots of followers can imo literally only end poorly. hhhhhowever, i would feel really weird if i like... glossed over the fact that i know that’s where a lot of my followers have come from, or acted like that didn’t happen, so. i just have to like, mention it. my takeaway here is if you’re going to make mental health content FOR YOURSELF because you WANT to, brace yourself for it to potentially circulate, and be ready to feel really weird about it, but i do not recommend it as like... a way to purposefully grow an audience.
ANYWAY. with that nagging out of the way. actual advice
1. fanart, but only of stuff you really actually like. it is literally just a fact that it’s easier for people to feel invested in and care about characters from stuff they’re already invested in than original independent content. it’s not wrong to court that! but i think u should only pour energy into fanart of stuff u actually like — not bc chasing after whatever the current BNHA-type thing is rn is “selling out,” who gives a shit, but bc the end goal is to have an audience who WANTS to see what YOU want to make. you want people who care about your specific set of aesthetics and interests, not ppl who will unfollow en masse the second you fall off trend. (if you DO tend to really like what’s super popular, there’s nothing wrong with that! that’s lucky for you, genuinely.)
2. self promo all the time. this one can be hard bc it feels embarrassing at first. you feel like you’re spamming people or being annoying or self centered. but listen: people follow literally hundreds of accounts. you remember every time you’ve boosted your drawing; most of the ppl who follow you probably didn’t even see it. and if they see it twice or three times among the literally hundreds and thousands of posts anyone sees per day that is not a big deal. stuff gets lost! timelines and dashboards move fast! i cannot count the number of times i’ve seen something cool and thought “oh i’ll check that out” and then five minutes later i’ve forgotten bc of information overload. you have to constantly remind people that you exist and that you make things and i promise you you’re not being as annoying as you think you are. (i know you guys don’t see this in practice from me much on tumblr; that is bc i don’t really like it here and i don’t understand the vibes. i never shut the fuck up on twitter)
3. follow and engage with your peers, not just people with 10k+ followers who have already “made it” or whatever. this is not advice about growing an audience so much as advice for not feeling super shitty while you’re trying to grow your audience. i’m not saying that people with tons of followers/bustling online shops/enamel pin empires are like a completely different category of person of whatever, that’s not my point; clout is not direct deposit and just bc someone is popular doesn’t mean they’re coasting by without worries; etc etc. but my point is that i used to only follow very popular, established artists who were, in my mind, “out of my league,” and i spent all my time beating myself up for not being them or being consumed with jealousy and resentment. but... spending more time with artists who are kind of at the same ssstage of figuring things out as i was, as much as any individual journeys can ever be “the same,” was much more encouraging and inspiring and energizing, and helped me reset my concept of what “success” means for independent creatives into something more healthy. don’t wear yourself out chasing after people who seem to be moving way faster than you, especially if it’s making you feel like shit! find some people who are walking at a pace you can relate to, take interest in their stuff, talk and form connections. you’ll feel better.
4. just draw the stuff you want to even if you don’t think it has audience appeal. literally just draw exactly what makes you happy. this sounds like i’m trying to pull some corny Just Be Yourself! Believe In Your Art! shit and i mean yeah i guess but i also mean that literally from experience there was a significant surge in interest + appreciation of my work when i went apeshit and just decided to do the most self indulgent shit possible no matter how cliche or tacky or cringe or whatever it was. people respond to sincerity and passion, i really believe that. people can tell when you’re having fun and they like it. who doesn’t wanna be around someone who’s always having fun
that’s about all the stuff that i think could be considered like.... more or less universal. i dunno!!! just keep at it. the internet is a nightmare i don’t really know how it works

how radfem lite rhetoric echoes the social effects of misogyny
@rainbowloliofjustice wrote a quality post about absurd and condescending it is to judge women for their life choices, as if they didn’t actually choose those things for themselves. and it struck me that the things they described shared a consistent message.
(vocabulary note:
‘women’ means ‘women’ - trans, cis, intersex, or otherwise
‘(perceived) women’ encompasses (1) women, trans, cis, intersex, or otherwise, and (2) anyone that others - radfems, etc - mistakenly perceive as women (nb afab, sometimes trans men, etc)
‘women and/or people presenting as women’ encompasses (1) women, trans, cis, intersex, or otherwise, and (2) anyone of any gender who chooses to present as a woman for whatever reason, not limited to genital arrangement.)
so ….
you know how I’m always on about radfem lite rhetoric? as in: people who don’t even like non-intersectional radfems, much less their subgroups (terfs & swerfs), will say this stuff without understanding the buried connection to radfem thinking?
the examples rainbowloli used are all that kind of rhetoric - or closely tied to it.
‘f-o-f, you’re trying too hard. it’s women looking down on other women for their choices because of internalized misogyny.’
well the funny thing is, nonintersectional radical feminism totally encourages (perceived) women to look down on other (perceived) women for their choices.  The difference is only that:
radfem rhetoric judges (perceived) women for what they see as ‘catering to men’/’the patriarchy’ too much*
misogyny judges (perceived) women for not catering to the patriarchy enough(or not doing it ‘the right way’).
(*’catering … too much’ should be read as ‘doing something that might conceivably please men, even if it also pleases the (perceived) woman doing it.’)
In short: both radfems & patriarchal social structures try to control and police the behavior of (perceived) women.
That’s why radfem rhetoric can easily flourish among the unaware: the behavior it encourages replicates the behavior encouraged by patriarchal/misogynistic social structures. It’s only the reasoning that’s changed.
Let me demonstrate:
“Wow, I feel so sorry for women dating ugly dudes like girl you can do so much better.”
this is closest to internalized misogyny. In general, when a woman is seen as significantly more beautiful than her partner we assume the guy is somehow buying her affection, and we judge her for being bought off. that’s internalized misogyny.
But lop off the ‘ugly’ in the middle of that sentence and you’ve got word-for-word radfem rhetoric. ‘I feel sorry for women dating dudes like girl you can do so much better.’ because dudes are always hopeless, self-centered trash and women are always attentive, woke angels. That poor silly woman. she needs to find a good wife who will make her happy. Dating men is an act of catering to the patriarchy.
and no: neither misogynists nor radfems consider that maybe the woman is happy with the man she’s dating, nor are they willing to respect her choice to date whomever she likes, for whatever reason she chooses.
“I feel so sorry for girls who spend hours doing their makeup and they can’t catch a break from the patriarchy.”
as is often the case, there’s a grain of truth in here. Dress codes & appearance standards for (perceived) women in client-facing jobs are often more strict than those for (perceived) men, and certainly more expensive to maintain (jobs that require women and/or people who present as women to wear makeup should have to pay for it. just saying). Plus, those standards are often set by (cis) men who are in positions empowered to make those calls. There’s also plenty of internalized misogyny involved in the social perception that anyone who is and/or presents as a woman must maintain their appearance at a certain standard to attract a (male) mate, whereas men are seen as capable of attracting a woman via qualities other than appearance.
But the idea that all people who present as &/or are women are forced or brainwashed into a makeup & beauty regimen purely at the behest of men/patriarchy is both an insult to free will and too narrow a look at daily primping. Plenty has been written by others about how applying makeup often isn’t about men/attracting men at all. and men and/or male-presenting people are also under social pressure to meet certain beauty standards to be seen as attractive (though perhaps not to the same degree).
‘women are forced to do [thing] by the patriarchy/the only reason women do [thing] is because of patriarchy,’ where [thing] is something that women and/or female-presenting people choose to do for many reasons, is a radfem dog whistle.
The underlying assumption is that any (perceived) woman who says they do [thing] for a reason other than ‘i’m forced to do it for the pleasure of men’ must be a brainwashed victim of internalized misogyny; the only way to truly free oneself of patriarchal brainwashing is to submit oneself entirely to a husban– I mean, the radfem worldview.
And the third statement has the same energy:
“I feel sorry for women who enjoy [insert thing] because they’ve been socialized to enjoy it.”
Here’s another statement that presumes that women only do [thing] because they were tricked or brainwashed into it. Here, the word ‘socialized’ stands for ‘taught by patriarchal society’ - i.e. (perceived) women only enjoy [thing] because men & misogyny taught them to enjoy it.
and hey: our society is patriarchal. and hey: that totally does influence how women are socialized and how women think about themselves and others in negative ways. but this statement once again takes it too far: it posits that women functionally have no free will and are more or less mind-controlled by the influence of patriarchy into all their likes and dislikes.
If you’re having a hard time seeing the radfem influence, insert ‘giving head’ for ‘[insert thing]’, and ‘taught by men’ for ‘socialized’: ‘I feel sorry for women who enjoy giving head because they’ve been taught by men to enjoy it.’ because to a radfem, (perceived) women doing anything that gives pleasure to a (cis) man cannot possibly be a pleasure to herself as well. It’s impossible for a (perceived) woman to choose such a thing of her own free will.
And no: radfems do not respect that some people they see as women enjoy things that they find reprehensible or disgusting. instead, they see that perceived woman’s enjoyment of what they hate as traitorous to the cause of womanhood. These traitors - who are also victims - must be rescued from their own desires, even if that means screaming at them daily about how terrible they are and how they’re hurting and betraying their fellow women and how they’re harming themselves. (because screaming at (perceived) women about how terrible they are isn’t at all a carbon copy of the behavior of misogynists towards women.)
The takeaway is this:
When you see a blanket statement about how women* are forced, tricked, coerced, trapped, etc by patriarchy, men, or misogyny to do [thing], please consider whether or not it respects autonomy/free will before resharing or agreeing with it.
It’s true that patriarchy influences the lives of people of all genders, and that much of that influence isn’t for the better. it’s true that it particularly harms anybody who isn’t a cis man (and even cis men, if they don’t perform masculinity to satisfaction). but arguing that patriarchy robs people, particularly (perceived) women, of all their free will is a step towards trying to control the actions of those (perceived women) for their own good - and that’s gateway radical feminism in a nutshell.
*in this context, ‘women’ often means ‘afab’ (as in, exclusionary of trans women + erasing trans men/afab people off the binary). Sometimes it means ‘afab people & trans women’ (erasing trans men & afab ppl off the binary. radfems usually consider trans men as sharing the disadvantages of women b/c of presumed genital configuration & afab nb people to be misguided GNC women.)
if this sounds transphobic & gender essentialist ... that’s because it is. b/c radfem ideology naturally points towards becoming a transphobic exclusionist.

Q: what are your thoughts on the viability of twitter as the long-term hub for fandom? i've been on twt in various fandoms for 7 yrs now and my general assessment is that it brings out the worst in many ppl. even apart from the terrible mass harassment and dog piling (which only seems to be getting worse, tbh), even the culture of "chill" twt often seems to encourage a lack of empathy or compassion, an assumption of bad faith, and a sort of generalized hyperbole that can lead to a flattening or removal of nuance. this was sparked by an interaction i saw play out earlier that went very badly bc of how everyone approached it when, from what i could tell, there was no actual disagreement btwn any of them. idk. ultimately, i don't know where else fandom would go that wouldn't replicate many of these problems to a greater or lesser extent. but i feel like i've seen you touch on some of this before and i wondered if you had any thoughts.
A: bts fandom is my first one on twitter, so it's always hard for me to separate what of my experience is fandom-specific vs platform-specific; my acct was created in 2016 but i literally had never used it until i started using it for bts at the end of 2018 because it seemed like all the cool people i would wanna be friends with were on twitter (the vibe of the bts fandom on tumblr, which is where i was previously, seems p different to me and i couldn't rly find anyone who was talking about them in the ways i wanted to talk about them!) i think there are advantages and disadvantages to twitter tbh, but i can only really compare it to tumblr, since that's the only other platform i've used for fandom (i was around and reading fic in fandom during livejournal in the early 2000s, but i only lurked, so i don't have any experience with creating content or interacting with ppl there from which to draw.)
i've found that twitter is a much easier place to get to know people, since replies to threads are such an easy way of joining a conversation, so i made friends here much faster than on tumblr, but i think the simultaneous disadvantage of replies is that it makes it easier for people to dogpile and that other ppl feel totally fine with barging into your mentions when you don't know them with some kind of shitty hot take lmao. twitter is a terrible place to try to have any kind of discourse too tbh, bc the fact that you have to put things in threads makes it WAY easier for people to qRT only one part of a thread and take that out of context. there's also a thing i see on twitter way more than on tumblr, which i think comes from this drawback of threads, where when discourse is happening people will agree with some small point you made in one tweet of a thread and run w it in a direction that's kind of extreme, so points that were originally v nuanced will steadily get boiled down through ppl's agreement or disagreement into these weird extreme hard stances, and the convo IMMEDIATELY veers off in 400 different directions. i think this happened on tumblr too, it's kind of the nature of online discourse, but it was at least slower, yknow?
ultimately, whenever twt blows up i frequently see ppl being like "oh god i miss [tumblr/lj/etc]," and like i don't know abt any of y'all but i remember shit being JUST as bad on those platforms lmao! they were hellscapes, just in slightly different ways! i think fandom will prob move on from twitter, bc fandom seems to move en masse every 5-10 years anyway, but i also think it's important for reasonable people and experienced fans in these communities to keep having convos abt how to build community and how to treat others online, bc fandom will ALWAYS have new uninitiated people coming in. the optimist in me hopes that if i behave in a way that i think is fair and kind online, maybe it will encourage others to do the same! it's all i can do!

I Could Be The Monster
Song that inspired this fic. A Daniel Fabron/Ghoul!OC fic. The OC does have a name, but I have decided that it won’t be used in the fic for stylistic reasons. And also because ghouls usually don’t share their names with humans.
TW// Dark themes compliant with Resident Evil and Tokyo Ghoul; body horror, the consumption of human flesh (We’ll call it cannibalism just so people with tagging systems can avoid it), zombies, graphic violence, blood, mentions of starvation, self mutilation, mention of binge-eating, obsessive behavior, gore, and sexual themes.
If you guys like this, I may make it into a series. For now it’s just going to be a drabble with an OC and Daniel Fabron. Thanks for reading! And a thank you to the lovely @rjshepherd for giving me the motivation and encouragement needed to even write this in the first place. ‘Cause i’m a gremlin with no self-esteem.
Key of words ppl who haven’t seen Tokyo Ghoul might not understand: Dove = CCG agent (people who hunt ghouls), Kakuja = Ghoul that cannibalizes other ghouls; can sometimes get mutations if they eat enough ghoul flesh, rinkaku = a type of kagune (ghoul predatory organ they use to kill humans and defend themselves with) that takes the form of tentacle-like appendages that come from the lower back; comes with enhanced regen.
It was foolish to the extreme to return, given she’d barely escaped with her life the last time she’d been kidnapped by Umbrella. They’d realized quickly that she wasn’t human when they couldn’t stick her with their needles. So they locked her away and began to experiment to figure out just what her weaknesses were. The scientists discovered quickly that she had a taste for human flesh. And then they discovered that it was less a taste and more a dietary need. That was done through bouts of intense starvation where the only flesh they gave her was that of the b.o.w.s. It tasted like shit.
Not to mention the aftereffects of consuming said flesh. A whole body burning that was incapacitating at best and at worst, drove her into periods of feral rage where she lashed out at anything that drew too close. The ghoul could remember being set loose on poor humans too stupid to realize that she couldn’t be reasoned with in that state--not that they would’ve convinced her not to eat them even if she could be persuaded otherwise. The hunt was a reward in and of itself.
And there was the strange effect on her RC cells. They played with the viruses they’d injected in through her tear ducts. It was a rough sort of tug-of-war that was, at times, extremely debilitating. Her RC cells would overproduce themselves leading to several burnouts that nearly killed her while the virus would cause her skin to bubble and roll about as it futily tried to make her mutate into something else. Or they did until her RC cells started, in the words of one of the scientists she’d overheard, eating the virus cells.
The result was regeneration so fast that it would give a ghoul with rinkaku whiplash along with another particularly neat side effect. The she-ghoul could take on a massive kakuja-esqe form without having consumed other ghouls. She was stronger and faster. But there were drawbacks to it all; namely the organization being damn determined to try to replicate the effects to make more like her. They wanted to make clones of her using embryonic cells.
So what did she do in protest? The ghoul tore her own reproductive organs out--ovaries and uterus--and crushed them into a thin red paste. Did she hate humans? Sure. But she didn’t want to see them all wiped out by carbon copies of herself pumped up on bioweaponry. Not that it worked. Her frankly ridiculous regen just regrew the organs in no time at all, leaving her infuriated and hungry. That was when she decided to stage a jailbreak.
So, why was she returning to the facility? Simple; there was a human there that she’d become quite enamored with. Coincidentally, it had been the very one to have her snatched up off the streets of Raccoon City. Fucked up, right? Really and truly, it was. Especially because he saw her more as some monster to be controlled. During the tests where she’d been released against unsuspecting humans, Daniel Fabron was her handler. He’d had her hooked up to a headset that allowed him to take control over her motor functions. It should’ve been violating for someone else to puppet her body like that. And at first blush, it was. Until he started praising her power and skill in the hunt. Sweet whispers in French about how she was the perfect killer. About how smoothly and silently she moved when he let her run wild for his amusement.
The ghoul knew he couldn’t possibly know the impact of what he was saying to her. He was human, after all. Violence was a love language in ghoul society that dominated all else. One that was not shared with humans. If you loved a ghoul who was an alpha, the best way to show it would be to deliver to them the heads of their enemies. Failing that, whisper sweet nothings about their skill in killing. Praise them in the hunt, tell them how pretty they looked slashing open a Dove’s throat and they’d be yours. Or offer to them the prime cut of your kills. Offer a night of hunting together. Nothing quite got the blood running to her core like chasing down a human with someone else helping to corral them into her waiting arms.
And though the little experiments he’d run with her as “the guest of honor” were just that; they felt like dates to her. The ghoul knew they weren’t, but it was hard not to see them that way. It was how the rich ghouls who wanted her attention got it. They would stage little plays just like this one and let her kill to her heart’s content. She didn’t know when he’d graduated from another meal to potential mate, but she was sure his enthusiasm at using her in Umbrella’s tests was the catalyst.
That’s why she was sitting in his room in the facility, waiting on him. The ghoul had even brought something pretty to wear for him. One of those little nighties with the frills and lace that only came down to her thigh along with some makeup and a pair of cute stockings. She’d sat herself on his bed. If he didn’t want her as his mate, it’d be okay… Well, really, it would hurt; however, she wasn’t the kind of ghoul that ate those who decided they weren’t mutually interested. If he didn’t like any of this, she’d just disappear from his life entirely. But if he did…
What would she do? Children born of human and ghoul mating didn’t usually survive the pregnancy without a massive undertaking. Not to mention that she wasn’t entirely sure if he’d even want children--if he even wanted her in the same way she did him. As if the universe wanted to give her the opportunity to ask, Daniel finally entered his room. He didn’t notice her as he moved about in a slightly panicked fashion and collected his belongings. “Fuck, fuck, fuck, how in the fuck am I supposed to get away from the fucking BSAA by myself?! I’m important enough to put be on Wesker’s fucking payroll but not enough to be evacuated--” He broke off, finally noticing the escaped ghoul reclining on his bed as if she owns it. “How in the fuck--Why did you return? I thought you didn’t want to be Umbrella’s little pet.”
It was odd to the extreme to him that the inhuman woman would return… His brain pumped on the brakes when Daniel finally processed what she was wearing. Some frilly little nightie that left absolutely nothing to the imagination with how sheer it was. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Did…Did she come back here to try and fuck him?
Sharp as ever, she seems to catch on to his thought process as he looks her over. “I don’t want to be Umbrella’s pet, nor do I want to be yours. I’ll be honest with you, Daniel,” The way she purrs his name should not be attractive. She is a bioweapon that eats people. “I’m not sure when I stopped thinking of you as a meal. Maybe it was because you kept talking about how good I was at killing, about how much you loved it when I ripped someone open. When you would whisper about the beauty of the destruction I wrought. I know you might not have meant it that way, but to people like me, that’s dirty-talk of the highest caliber. Don’t get it twisted though. I’m not here to be a pet.”
Daniel has to swallow the lump in his throat before he can speak. He’s not used to being caught off guard. Most people are predictable because they’re human. But this woman has demonstrated that she is very much not human. That she’s a vicious killing machine that hunts humans both out of biological need and for amusement. So if she’s not here to offer herself as a weapon again, what is she here for? “Then what brings you back into death’s arms, man-eater? Are you some sort of masochist that derives pleasure from terror?” From her words, she’d formed an attachment to him.
“I came back to make an offer to you and you alone. I don’t give a damn about your precious Umbrella or its goals. I offer myself up as your wife and the mother of any children you may want. Make no mistake though, I am not going to become a shrinking violet if you say yes. I will not bow to you or anyone, even if I do make a mate of you. I am a predator and will remain one even as your wife. That being said, I will try to respect your human notions of romance.”
There in plain words is her intention made clear. It’s confusing and earth-shattering that she’d want to marry him. Perhaps it’s a ghoul thing? “Don’t you hate me for putting you through hell? I forced you to kill humans--” Her laugh cuts through the air.
“You didn’t force me to kill those humans. Not you, nor your comrades. I killed them because I wanted to--”
“But you did it while being trapped in a box and threatened with starvation. You were still coerced into action.” A shiver of fear goes up his spine when one of her eyes shifts into that startling glowing crimson against a black sclerae. He knows from the experiments that its usually a threat.
“Perhaps, but you did all you could to make sure I was comfortable. You even gave me little rewards for doing a good job.” Her tongue laves over her lower lip as she recalls the times he had indeed been kinder than he should have. “Gave me one of your sweaters when I got too cold in my cell. Even gave me the rest of your coffee when I mentioned a desire for a cup, Daniel. Regardless of our positions in the situation, you can’t deny you grew attached to me. Whether as a plaything like the one you refer to as Mr. X or as a lover remains to be seen. It’s alright if your feelings aren’t mutual, I won’t eat you.”
He senses there’s a condition there. “But? I presume there are circumstances in which you would make a meal of me.”
“Smart human. You are correct.” The ghoul scoots to the end of the bed, dangling her legs off the side. They look soft and smooth to the touch. Daniel detects the scent of perfume now that she’s closer. She’d really gone all out for this, hadn’t she? “If the feeling is not mutual, I shall disappear from your life. Should you, or Umbrella, be foolish enough to try and track me down, I shall make dinner from every human stupid enough to be involved. It would be a damn shame since I worked so hard to stop binge-eating.” The inhuman woman finally rises from the bed and draws so close to him that their noses are nearly touching. He can smell the blood of her last meal on her breath--a grim reminder that he could be next. “So lay bare your heart to me, Daniel Fabron. Tell me if I shall be your wife or if I shall be a ghost in your life.”

going over my cell bio notes i wanna share another anecdote from my bio classes this year. on the last class our professor wrote up a bunch of conspiracy theories/general questions ppl have abt cancer on the board. for sake of being interesting I’ll just talk abt the conspiracy theory: ‘Do pharmaceutical companies have a cure for cancer and are ‘holding out’ on us?’
I might spruce this up by the time I actually get to scribing my cancer notes but basically the answer we got, after she got us to fill out like a dozen different ways cancer can be caused either by a mutation in proper gene function which results in the cell becoming cancerous (ie it divides indefinitely and forms a big mass of weirdo cells) was -
Cancer is not one disease! Experiences are all different depending on what tissues it is; it’s a different disease for everyone basically. So how can we have a general cure for everyone and every disease?
So that’s a good thing to tell people who are worried about that kind of thing. There are SO MANY THINGS that can go wrong in cell function which makes cells cancerous, and while we’re trying to fix those things we primarily ‘cure’ cancer now by killing cancerous cells - which brings us to the next point of how will we have a method to target cancerous cell and not kill the other cells?
And the answer to that is I think we don’t really? either thru radiation on one part of the body that has cancer we’re attempting to destroy cancer cells but healthy cells are affected. in chemotherapy i know there’s one chemical we use which inhibits cell replication by fucking with telomerase & other molecules involved in cell replication with the understanding that cancer cells way fucking more than regular cells - but so do the cells of our stomach lining so that’s why ppl using that drug in chemotherapy suffer in that specific way - the stomach lining cells are casualties. a friend of mine did her presentation topic on delivering drugs to cancerous tissues by putting the drugs into liposomes (little blobs of fat with a watery center) which theoretically bob around in our bloodstream harmlessly until they get to blood vessels in cancerous tissue which are ‘leakier’ (wrt tight junctions b/w cells, if im not mistaken) and where the liposomes leak out of the blood vessel and delivery the drug directly to the tissue. so like. scientists are working hard in every possible way to try to improve cancer treatment in very interesting ways? and my professor’s mother has dealt with and died from cancer and i’m just?
i don’t think my teacher was posing the question to straight out debunk misconceptions like my eco proff had been but all the same. it’s just frustrating when people fixate on the weirdest things to distrust abt the pharmaceutical industry. there are things to distrust (!!!!!) but charlatans are ready and waiting to profit by misleading you. automatically distrusting the science is not helpful, but I don’t think automatically trusting science is the answer either. sometimes scientists, bc we’re human, really want ppl to understand that we’ve put in the work and while none of what we’re doing is shit you couldn’t do if you were given an education for it I think an attitude some ppl have towards ‘ppl should trust the authority of scientists’ is bad shit since that’s exactly what we, as future scientists, are taught not to do. like we’re taught to question shit and make sure things make sense for ourselves, and to acknowledge when shit doesn’t make sense but it works (and then work on figuring out why it works)
like there are resources online to help explain shit and while much of it is locked behind paywalls that doesn’t change the fact that work is occurring and some of it is accessible. so honestly, given how much of science is inaccessible to ppl I don’t blame them for being distrustful esp w/ a political and media system which doesn’t respect science unless they can make a profit from it but please don’t buy from people who make a profit from encouraging people to be paranoid of scientists! don’t buy their books or jewelry or give them any money at all!! those are my feelings! u can believe whatever u want but like!!! PLEASE DON’T LET PEOPLE MAKE A PROFIT FROM U.
anyhow, another cool question she posed was “Can I genotype you and predict whether you will get cancer?” and the answer was is that some genes can predict you having a disposition for cancer (e.g. BRCA) but they’re not a promise!
