Madness and Emotion - A Halateez Coded Song Analysis.

It’s been rolling through my head for a while that Crazy Form could be Halateez. That perhaps Will (or at least the first half of it) is from their perspective. It would be in line with the color schemes and the general dark theme of the of the album. That and some of the concept photos seem to really lean that way.

It really got me thinking though, if Will is Halateez then a lot of the lyrics we’re used to seeing in other songs would mean different things. There are a lot of lyrics and themes we can easily connect to Feverteez and their story arc, but not nearly as many we can connect to Halateez. It’s been years since we’ve been introduced to the concept of Halateez, and yet we still don’t know much about them other than they’re from Strictland and we’re leading a revolution until they were captured.

I know many people debate if Halateez and Feverteez are the same people or different people. Generally I think of them as different people, because even if they were the same originally their different life experiences would’ve made them different on the inside. (Although I admit, this album made me wonder if perhaps the theories ab them merging/being the same person at some point, are true.)

I’m not necessarily saying that every song on the album is Halateez, because we can’t know that one way or the other for sure. (You have no idea how long I’ve been tearing my hair out over this.) But what I can tell you is that Will feels different. Outlaw is crazy! Outlaw is chaos! But Will is different. Will is desperation to the point of madness.

Something I don’t think Feverteez is capable of right now.

So without further ado, here’s my vaguely Halateez perspective song analysis. (We Know/Emergency/Arriba/Silver Light)

WE KNOW

This song is by far a favorite of mine on the album. It comes on strong. It’s powerful. There’s desperation and challenge in it, as thought it’s the beginning of something bigger.

It’s The Comeback. It’s their comeback. Halateez.

One thing I found interesting as I was reading the lyrics is how much it seems as though they are both the hunters and the hunted. They’re back and they’re coming after you. But who is you? The government? Z? The brainwashed citizens of Strictland?

I swear, “I’m the morning,” always gives me chills. It’s so perfect for the role they’re playing because it connects both to the idea of waking up and also to imagery of the sun rising in the darkness. Dawn. In Wave, the concept of ‘the wave’ is that of a challenge a trial. They’re sending a warning because they are the challenge.

When I think of a wave I imagine something huge, overwhelming, something bigger than just them. Halateez is back, but it’s not just them. Feverteez is still a symbol of hope sure, but Halateez is the og. I would guess that even though many people are willing to join the revolution while Feverteez is spearheading it, many more would show up to follow Halateez especially if they pull a Jesus and come back from their ‘presumed deadness’. That would make sense connected to the title of the album. Will. A word that makes me think of the phrase ‘the will of the people’. As the Crazy Form MV suggests, they’re assembling their own little army of progressively growing number. Their own Wave made of the citizens of Strictland.

I see this as a threat to Z & anyone who’ll stand by him, but also as a message of hope to anyone trapped so deep in the blackhole of emotionless existence that they don’t think they can escape. However…I wonder if part of it is directed towards Feverteez too, as a warning not to get sucked into the false dreams as they have a habit of doing. (Which would be kinda funny if the unit songs are Feverteez in dreams again ToT)

Even if Feverteez has been doing their best to help people, in the end it’s still Halateez’s world. In the end they’re the ones with the most power in the revolution. They are back and they are coming for you. ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧//✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧

“-thunder will turn the lights on…” I’m going to assume that this reference to ‘thunder’ is supposed to mean Thunder the undercover organization within Prestige Academy. So Halateez (and Feverteez) have teamed up with Thunder (as in the Diaries) and are trusting them to “turn the lights on”. My theory on that is very much connected to the Will diaries. At the end of the Will diaries Thunder’s leader, (the Be Free girl) is sent in to meet Z, an undercover mission that would bring her to very center of the Strictland regime. If she is caught showing emotion everything will be blown, but if she manages to stay hidden, she’ll be able to relay information straight from the government’s head office to Thunder and the Black Pirates (Halateez’s revolutionary group that Feverteez has been working with). My guess is that turning the lights on is supposed to mean shedding light on the terrible things Z has done. Releasing information that no one else should know and making it clear who’s really the bad guys.

Halateez is finally ready to reveal themselves to the world, they’re no longer waiting or hiding. It is the right time to come out and stand as they are. (Likely alongside Feverteez somehow.)

I’d also like to mention how cool the last line is, because it comes through with very real world implications. “My mic’s on” is a very kpop thing to say, (for obvious reasons) at concerts etc. BUT it’s also very applicable to the idea of ‘be careful I’m not afraid to say what needs to be said’ it’s a thinly veiled threat about revealing the truth. ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧//✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧

Emergency

Frankly this song is so concerning. The first time I read the lyrics I was a little bit scared for the tone of this whole album. This whole song is just pure Dionysian madness. No matter what iteration of Ateez you think Will is, Emergency is concerning.

This whole chunk of lyrics could be connected to irl Ateez, (five years since mainstream, etc…) which would be pretty depressing, but also something which is necessary to think about. Even when looking at things from a Lore™️ perspective, realizing how it applies to real life is important to understanding the perspective. From an irl perspective, lore aside, this song is about getting lost in fame. Endless parties, endless emergencies, and a life you can’t go back to. The pressure closing in. Losing yourself in the game.

Which, though not exactly what Halateez/Feverteez is feeling, it’s pretty darn close. This song, lore perspective, is still about the pressure closing in and losing yourself in the game. The biggest differences is that Halateez is infamous rather than famous, and the pressure is quite literally the fear of death. So, uh yea. This could be Feverteez, sure, finally crumbling under the pressure of having to save a world that isn’t their own. But I really, really, believe it’s Halateez. Why? First, overall Halateez is rougher around the edges than Feverteez. Second, (and most important) how long has Halateez had emotion? If we assume The Real is their backstory we can say they’ve had emotion since Highschool….right? But if it’s not, then how long has it been? 5 years?? More???

Is that really enough to feel the depths of despair and come back from it? Is that really enough time to learn to control how you feel? Sometimes do they wish they’d never woken their emotions?

I’m going to agree with Tiny Bug Ink on this one, that the Light is another reference to their treasure. (their video here) But what is their treasure. We know what Feverteez treasures are from the first diaries. But do we know what Halateez’s are? Are they the same?

“A wish I’ve fervently desired from the beginning of the explosion.” This isn’t something Feverteez would say. The explosion is the revolution, but Halateez is the only one who saw the beginning of the revolution, they started it, they got the ball rolling.

Why? Why did they start the revolution? They wanted Freedom.

Freedom is their treasure.

It took me a week to realize this, but the phrase “Who is gonna play?” along with the “You better run, hide & seek.” from We Know and Yeosang’s hopscotch part from Bouncy are all probably supposed to connect to the idea of The Game. (Something Tiny Bug Ink pointed out in this video)

Throughout the whole World Series (yet another phrase associated with games), Ateez has consistently referred to the world as a game. These lines are just a few of the many that connect the concepts, and I’m not quite sure their meaning in the long term, but it is really interesting. As of this song they’ve lost their hope. They’ve lost their trust in the world and maybe even each other. They’re stuck in emotional limbo drowning themselves in alcohol. Thinking of the events of the Will diaries I don’t really blame them. Somehow the events of the diaries seems so much worse if it was the world you came from, not some dreamlike parallel universe.

I also wanted to point out “Party never ends”, because it’s just yet another usage of the word End which they seem to be throwing in everywhere this comeback. Party never ends.

Crazy Form

(For sake of length and my sanity I’m going to skip Crazy Form rn. I do have a separate post on it though, here.)

I would like to say though that the phrase “Ateez go!” doesn’t necessarily have to be self referential. It could be encouragement. Like arriba.

ARRIBA

This song was frustratingly hard to analyze. It has a very similar vibe to Emergency when it comes to lyrics and general theme, but unlike Emergency it’ no longer a cry for help, they’ve just let everything go.

I thought it was interesting that Arriba, (assuming google isnt screwing with me) is essentially Spanish slang for Up! (encouraging) So it’s probably supposed to be an equal equivalent to;

“We go up.”

(I love the stage it’s so silly! And cowboy! The lyrics on the other hand-) ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧//✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧

For the chorus, the words ‘dirty night’ we (as in me) almost immediately connected to sex, debauchery, etc… And while yes there is plenty of evidence in the song to make that connection, I feel like it has a double meaning. For violence. It’s a dirty night not just because they’re letting their inhibitions go and partying hard. It’s a dirty night because of the fear and hopelessness that even drove them to that point. For the threat of death hanging over them.

I don’t have too much to say here about these lines. Though I would like to point out the obvious mentions of time, madness, and most importantly the end. This whole album constantly seems to reference the end of something. Which is both concerning, and not because of the whole ‘beginning is the end, end is the beginning’ thing.

Their sets for the stages also seem to reinforce that connection to the Mexican revolution.

“My nose grows longer like Pinocchio’s” I think this line is particularly important, simply because it’s not instantly connected to the other lyrics. Ok so, he’s lying. But to whom? The people around him? Or himself?

I really like the context of the word dreamers. Irl a ‘street of dreamers’ is someplace someone goes to achieve their dreams, but contextually it could also mean a street of dreaming people. It’s the road of the people of the revolution. Dreaming of freedom literally and figuratively. I love the addition of Picasso and Salvador both as Spanish artists, but additionally, on top of that, they were both part of the Surrealism movement in art. A movement in art that emphasized the power of dreams and subconscious.

(Quotes taken from here, bc they summarized it better than I could.) Tbh I wasn’t expecting their actual work to be connected to the theme, but here we are. HJ & production appreciation hours.

“Blood spreading up and down.” As of the diaries Z has moved on from imprisonment and secret executions to public hangings. Like, just the idea of that is just…so fked up. Even if, as of Arriba, they’re in their safe little dreamworld they created in Crazy Form to give the citizens hope, they’re still in the same places. Even if they’re in a dream, they’re partying where people died. Like….ehh.

Silver Light

Let me just start off with saying that this song breaks me almost every time I listen to it. There’s just something so intensely emotional about it that it always makes me want to cry. Silver Light is the moment where the insanity of the last four songs melt into a single ray of hope. It’s perfect.

And it was also the hardest to analyze. ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧//✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧

The very first line of the song has the word chain in it, and it’s sung by Wooyoung. Which makes me instantly connect it to two things; The Fever Diaries and the Wonderland MV.

In his very first diary entry, Wooyoung talks about stage fright. This is the final paragraph of his entry. (Read the full thing here)

In his diary Wooyoung uses the word ‘chain’ to represent his fear. What was holding him back. I think, in Silver Light it’s being used the same way. The citizens of Strictland are afraid of emotion, afraid of feeling, afraid of being in pain and showing it. I wasn’t expecting to relate so fully with these lyrics, but as I was turning them over in my head I realized something…It’s the same as when you want to cry but can’t because you’re afraid of being vulnerable. Afraid people will judge you. It’s that feeling, isn’t it?

Being afraid of showing emotion…Chained by fear…huh.

I’m sure there are more times they use the word chain in their discography. Times that aren’t related to Woo. But I can’t think of any off the top of my head, so for now he just owns that word.

Now, I can’t talk about the word wings without mentioning Seonghwa’s (super fking amazing) dance break on D1 of their tour. It lives in my mind rent free and I’ve thought about nothing else. It’s so- *screaming/crying*

But it’s also related to wings and the concept of freedom. The Strictland guards ‘take his wings’ a metaphor for taking his freedom. They leave him because he’s already broken, not physically, but mentally. They stole his freedom of thought. (I’m not crying no)

I could talk forever about this dance break. I won’t, but I do want to talk about how it relates to Halateez. If they lived in the emotionless void that Strictland is for their whole lives and then one day discovered feeling. If they learned how to feel and sense and hope and yearn. How to live alive. Could they go back?

They were captured, locked up, away from their friends in glass boxes, and forced to watch people being tortured. They had their freedom, which is probably their only treasure, ripped from them. They were sent to hell after they first learned how to feel. Don’t you think they’d want to go back to how it was before ? To embrace emotionlessness? To give up? The stealing of his wings can mean a lot of things. Not being able to go back home, losing emotion, losing hope, giving up, the moment of despair. But look at him and tell me that’s not what despair looks like.

This verse gives me heart palpitations, and not just bc I love HJ’s rapping.

“This is the last chance, maybe.” This line makes me think of the breaking of the cromer in the Crazy Form MV. Assuming the scene isn’t a reference to when Yeosang broke the first cromer to save them, they broke the second cromer. Maybe there’s a third artifact they can use to time/dimension travel. Maybe that’s what the cube is. But if that’s true, if they break it they can’t go back home. It also made me wonder. Was that how Halateez felt when they first found the cromer and first used the it? They were desperate enough to summon Feverteez from another dimension. A plan that sounds like a last ditch effort if I ever heard one. As though they’d lost all hope in themselves.

Throughout the whole album there are constant references to the end, the last, the final. Will is the end of something. It could be the end of the uprising whether winning or losing, the end of Halateez hiding their identities, or even the end of Feverteez dream and adventure in Strictland. Really, we won’t even know what was the end of until next comeback. (It could pick up anywhere, I’m scared.) To be honest, this was the hardest set of lyrics to analyze. Specifically these lines: “There’s no law saying die. The trigger at the edge of breath.” Like excuse me what. (Genius.com really let me down on this one ToT) So I looked up other translations and they were equally confusing. But I did find this vv

I don’t pretend to know Korean, so going strictly off these translations I’m guessing it roughly means: We can’t die yet. So there’s that.

“Whether I want it or not this is my life.” “In the time of regrets I’m going. Here is the last man standing.”

In irl sense the “radiant light” and “countless voices” are Atiny. There have been countless times Ateez has referred to us as their Light, Lights, or Stars. (Excuse me I’m sobbing.)

In a lore sense though, it probably means the citizens of Strictland. The people who are slowly waking up and desperate for freedom, desperate for someone to save them from meaningless existence.

Which, really. Isn’t it the same? Living our boring lives, to work, to school, to sleep. A lot of us these days are really living in a grey world. Ateez music, their performances, are loud and bright, emotional and spectacular. They motivate and inspire us to wake up. To find our treasures. To feel our emotions. To dance.

Ateez started small, like really small. But now they’re able to inspire us to dream big, to hope. I like to think this song says the opposite is true as well. We inspire them, to hope, to continue going forward. And as idealistic as it sounds, I believe it. Because I’ve been inspired by fellow Atiny’s creations time and time again. ❤️

Now, for the final piece. In typical me fashion I looked deeper than I needed to and found something interesting on the concept of Ego. (So it connects to Crazy Form too)

In Freudian psychology, Ego is the conscious part of the mind that keeps your Id (instincts/monkey brain) in line with your Superego (morality/ideals). Without a strong enough Ego you lose control of yourself and descend into a kind of insanity characterized by blindly searching for pleasure. Ego is characterized as the realistic part of the human psyche, including rational thinking, planning, and self-control. (More info here.)

In this context “My ego’s in this show.” Likely is supposed to mean; ‘I’ve thought this through’, or ‘I’m doing this of my own will’.

I know that I am going hard on my Halateez agenda, but their story is incredibly vague for how important it is. I feel like, even if they’re dead/gone/merged, Feverteez’s journey is still related to them more than it’s not. That’s why I go so hard on my Halateez shenanigans. Because they’re important dammit.

So as I am seeing a new little influx of honeyworks fans, likely due to the shitty herotaru anime, I want everyone to listen up.

LIPxLIP, the idol duo featured in the anime, are a lot deeper than what the anime explains. I understand that it was Hiyori's story (even though they didn't get her personality right either lmao) so it's not going to go into detail about Aizou or Yujiro. I'm fine with that. I really am.

What bothered me was the small bits we were given are incredibly misleading for new fans. The anime exists more as fanservice for pre-existing fans. Fans who read the novels, regularly watch MVs, and so forth.

So I'm going to go over LIPxLIP's stories. Their thematic importance. Their relationship, and their relationship with Hiyori. I am quite sick and tired of seeing new fans blab about them as hateful misogynists, shallow, uncaring towards their fans...and all that.

Starting off with the local hero of the anime, Shibasaki Aizou.

Back when he was a small child, he loved singing. His mother played piano and his father played guitar (his father probably taught him how to play guitar? That or he picked it up himself. I don't think that was ever specified). He entered a children's singing competition, and ended up winning.

However, a couple years later, his father began to lie about going to work when he was really going out and having an affair with (another woman? multiple women??). This led to the father and their mother, Shibasaki Yuko, to constantly argue and scream at each other.

As a result, Ken (Aizou's older brother), would make pasta for himself and Aizou, as their parents were too busy screaming at each other for hours at a time. The novels stated that back then, their parents would argue so often that they would forget to buy groceries, and would leave Aizou starving. During this time, Yuko began drinking and getting drunk- which would scare her kids.

Eventually, the Shibasaki parents got a divorce, and Yuko began to drink even more heavily. She would cry and mourn. Aizou and Ken were still children at the time. Aizou, being the young child he was and recalling how Yuko used to smile when he sang, began to sing for her in hopes of cheering her up. Of course, Yuko just threw her alcohol at him and screamed at him that he needed to shut up- he was too noisy. It's also been heavily implied that she would hit Aizou too when she was drunk.

From this, Aizou stopped singing, being physically unable to. He began living out his days without truly living, just getting by. He had friends, but didn't hang out with them or join any clubs, having become depressed and understimulated.

In middle school, when playing his guitar one day, his mother broke it and screamed at him to never play it at home again. This led to him crying and not playing again...until he came across a musical instrument store, where he meets Morita. He, one day, brings the guitar in and begs him to fix it. Morita agrees, and even allows Aizou to stay in an upstairs room that used to be used for music lessons every now and then, on the condition he returns home occasionally. So he essentially finds a second home in the music store.

One day, he sees on his phone that there's an audition to become a teenage idol, so he signs up, which is where he meets Yujiro.

He (and Yujiro) both pass due to their spectacular performances, and are told to become a unit. Aizou now has his fire back, looking forward to the future.

Now, for Someya Yujiro aka Aizou's anime arm candy.

When he was little (maybe before he was born? or maybe before he was 5??) his birth father died (unknown cause). His mother, Tae, got remarried to Someya Tamagoro. At first, things were fine. His father trained him in the art of kabuki.

Yujiro, at a young age, desperately wanted to be on stage doing kabuki with his new father. In fact, the desire was so strong, that he turned down all invites to hang out and play from the kids at his school. He didn't watch tv, he didn't do anything that would be considered a hobby. He abandoned everything that makes up a childhood to pursue his dream.

However, one day...his father told him and his younger brother, Koichiro, (who looked down on Tae and Yujiro for joining the Someya family), that Koichiro would be his heir. Yujiro tries to protest, only for Tamagoro to glare down at him coldly and tell him that he can't do it...he has no beauty.

All these years training, and Yujiro finally understands...he was never meant to stand on that stage. His father trained him for years, never truly intending for him to be on stage. Koichiro holds this over Yujiro, always mocking him and shoving him around.

As a result, Yujiro was banned from even entering the practice halls, and he became a helper of the house. He cleaned up backstage after shows, did laundry, all of that. Along with that, Tamagoro became colder to him, while Koichiro mocked him and abused him- verbally and sometimes physically. Yujiro thinks of taking his mother and running away, but has nowhere to go. He is absolutely miserable.

Of course, one day, Koichiro, for some reason, allows Yujiro to perform at a shrine once in his stead. We do not have any details on this, except that it made Yujiro happy and was clearly a one-time thing.

In either case, Yujiro too, lived a life of silence and loneliness. He tried to smile for his mom so she wouldn't worry, the one person who spoke to him. He had no friends, no hobbies, he accepted his fate of being his family's shadow, watching as Tamagoro has Yujiro's name removed from anything mentioning the Someya name, especially kabuki sites.

He was, essentially, disowned.

Tae still encouraged him to find something that made him happy...which eventually came in the form of the idol audition, where he meets Aizou.

...

NOW. That's a hell of a lot deeper than herotaru gave us. And again, it's fine that they couldn't go all into depth- after all, it's Hiyori's anime and her backstory is more simple. We can't have the idols outshinng her now, can we?

In any case, going strictly based on the novels (as the Hanipre stories are their own thing...though I like to consider them canon, but I know they're technically not), the stories of Aizou and Yujiro begin.

After agreeing to become a unit (or they won't debut at all), the two do not get along at all. Aizou mocks Yujiro for his lack of strength and stamina, and Yujiro mocks Aizou for being unable to read sheet music, Aizou finds out that Yujiro's father doesn't think he has what it takes to be an idol. So, he takes him to his secret spot and the two practice and talk.

Yujiro eventually gains Tamagoro's approval, and the two do a commercial, though they are not very well known. They want to debut.

After multiple instances of various situations (including Aizou sharing his music room with Yujiro, some bullies shoving Aizou into a pool at a live show and Yujiro yelling at them and teaching Aizou how to swim, going through an aquarium together and Aizou winning a stuffed penguin and giving it to Yujiro when he sees how disappointed he is that he didn't get it), they finally get their debut song, Romeo.

Eagerly, they practice it together. During this time, they're thinking about whether or not they should go to high school. Aizou tells Yujiro how he wants to avoid one high school in particular.

Yujiro eventually decides he wants to, because Narumi Sena inspired him. She was the one who recommended Sakuragaoka to him. Because of her, Yujiro checks the school out and runs into Aizou. He admits to Aizou he's thinking about going here, and Aizou balks. He's absolutely appalled, and complains about not wanting to go there. (Which..??? Aizou..??? No one said you had to?!) Yujiro points this out and Aizou has the flimsy excuse of "it'll be easier for Manager Uchida to pick us up".

...I'm sure. But I digress.

Filming for the Romeo MV comes, and the two are inspired by Sena's professionalism, and at the end, Aizou finds Yujiro alone and, after arguing over who is the first lip in their unit name, they share a toast together.

The MV released in February, just before high school begins, and Yujiro and Aizou are proud to see themselves on the giant tvs in town. Yujiro remarks to himself how he feels as though he can overcome anything, and how he'll still be depressed- there'll still be days he can't even get out of bed, where he wants to run away, desperately endures tears, and so on...but he knows Aizou will be by his side.

School starts up, where they meet Hiyori. In the novels, Hiyori has to actually work hard to gain their trust and friendship (I did a full novel-to-anime comparison here. I am skipping over retelling it so I can continue with LIPxLIP's story, but rest assured, I will get back to it and explain their friendship.)

The end of the year comes- and I am assuming it's autumn or so when the next novel takes place, since they mention an upcoming "spring concert" and how they've been idols for a year now.

The two boys are getting along more- though they still have their argumentative moments. They are given an opportunity to be in a play as the main characters. Aizou is hesitant, but Yujiro, who has acting experience thanks to kabuki, accepts it immediately. Yujiro cheers Aizou on in his own weird way and Aizou accepts the job as well.

However...during the first reading...Aizou loses his place and the director goes off on him. I mean, even when I was reading/translating it, I was appalled myself.

Yujiro stands up for Aizou, and nearly gets them both fired because of his "bad attitude". They agree to stay on board, but now, there's tension in the air.

Aizou's new at all of this, so most people ignore him, esp the director. But Yujiro is good at what he does, so people expect perfection from him. He's suffering as well, on the opposite spectrum from Aizou. Hell, just one scene alone, Yujiro and some NPCs did for over two hours straight with no breaks. They've been practicing in general for a while now and this was, according to Aizou, the first mistake Yujiro makes...which causes the director to scream at him.

Now, multiple times already, Aizou has ran after Yujiro and abandoned his spot, and thinks about how he refuses to leave Yujiro alone, because he was worried about him.

He even seeks help from some female colleagues (who...know about Aizou's brother and mistakes him for him. Which leads to a genuinely hilarious moment of Aizou screaming in actual horror about the idea of dating a girl, and he only thought about it "for 3 seconds". He says he talks with a few girls but never wants to be personally involved with them) to help him better himself at acting.

Eventually, Aizou realizes what he has to do and...does it. He lightens up the entire room with his humor and even earns Yujiro's gratitude and respect (though...Yujiro kind of accuses him of trying to "woo him" when Aizou insists they practice together??? and says he may start some rumors??? Hello???)

Practice resumes, and Aizou takes singing lessons from IV of Ft4 due to not understanding how to sing with emotions and not just singing something well.

Dress rehearsals start, and Aizou recalls, back when he was a child, the joy of singing. He remembers the joy when he sang in the children's competition, and amazes everyone. Things are going well.

Until...Yujiro eventually collapses from a lack of eating and sleeping. Aizou catches him and Yujiro is taken to a hospital. Aizou worries for his wellbeing until he is able to check on him. At first, Aizou scolds Yujiro for not taking care of himself, before blaming himself for not realizing Yujiro wasn't taking care of himself. He admits to himself he saw Yujiro not eating and being tired during the day.

After the first day of the actual play, Yujiro tells Aizou about the time he was able to perform at a shrine, and Aizou, now realizing the truth about how Yujiro wasn't able to perform on stage, encourages Yujiro to dance for him, even assuring him that he was the only one watching.

After the director interrupt them, the two both think about how they have a future of hope ahead of them.

OKAY.

NOW that we are now all caught up with their stories, let's break down their relationship.

The two of them fight. They always have. They have their ups and downs often, butting heads about the best way to do things. However, they both acknowledge that fighting is part of their own love. Source.

The entire point of the Romeo novel was for them to realize they can rely on each other, how they are no longer suffering alone, and chasing their dreams. Aizou realizes that there's someone who will always stick up for him, even when they don't get along. Yujiro realizes that he doesn't have to suffer alone and can rely on a partner- not just for work, but for his emotional needs as well, as he points out in the epilogue.

The entire point of the LOVE&KISS novel (aside from telling an AU story, which half of the novel is the fantasy universe) was to nip their trauma in the bud. They have unintentionally begun to rely heavily on each other.

With Aizou, he finds his passion for singing again. Not just his dream- but the pure joy he gets when he sings. He doesn't need his mother's approval anymore (though she moved to France anyway and got remarried there, so it's not like he'll see her again).

With Yujiro, he's finally able to prove to his father, his brother, and the director too that he's someone worthy of being on the stage. Not just as an idol, but as an actor too. He even performed kabuki on stage- albeit it was supposed to be solely for Aizou's eyes only.

The two argued twice in the novel, and the rest of the time was spent worrying about each other, spent helping each other, and strengthening their bond. It's because of each other that they were able to overcome a harsh hurdle in their lives, the things that blocked them from becoming truly happy with their careers.

With a bit of offhand flirting and standing by each other firmly, the two have cemented themselves as the most important people in each other's lives. Hell, they even wear the same outfts in Chapter 7 as they do in Samishigariya, where it explicitly states that they're the most important people to each other (or, at least Yujiro is to Aizou), interconnecting this novel to the song in question.

As for Hiyori...no, she was not in this novel. She was briefly in Romeo at the very end when complaining about city boys, but despite working for them at this point in time, she does not show up at all in LOVE&KISS. Hell, she's not even mentioned.

I do not think it is a continuity error. I think this was done deliberately- because what purpose would she serve? I'm not trying to sound mean, I adore Hiyori. But she knows nothing of their backstories or trauma. And LIPxLIP are not the type to blab about their past abuse. It's taken them a while to be open and honest with each other even now. The novel is about Aizou and Yujiro and their bond. They had their own spotlight in Hiyori's novels.

With Hiyori, they obviously have grown to care for her. They've helped her dress up for Asuka and confess to him, and approved of Nagisa as boyfriend material for her, even encouraging her to go for him because they know Nagisa truly loves Hiyori.

("But Lisi! You said you're going based off of the novels and MVs!" Yes, but Hiyori's newest song and Nagisa's song both show that the event in the anime happened and are firmly continuing it, so it is...canon.)

Either way, the two still make fun of Hiyori and gang up on her, but despite that, they still are there for her...kind of? It's not like she really faces any hardships aside from the bullying incident that eventually blew over. But they do support her dream in being a track athlete.

They respect her hard work. They respect her.

Even so, despite them clearly being good friends, there's still a wall between them. Aizou and Yujiro haven't told her anything about their lives...and why should they?

If you're going based on the anime, they have every right not to tell her anything. Hiyori's first instinct when Ken told her a bit about Aizou was "thank god it's not real trauma. hmm how do I fix him?" and then yelling at Yujiro that he's not hated by his family because his mother makes him lunch.

Knowing what you know now, you can see where I'm going with this? Anime Hiyori seriously butted her nose where it didn't belong and, unintentionally or not, she completely undermined their trauma. Sure, they didn't hear her talking with Ken, but they sure as hell heard her when she said Yujiro wasn't hated by his family. And not to mention that aggravating as fuck scene of her comparing Aizou's dislike of women to her dislike of squid.

Aizou dislikes women partially because of his family, yes, but it's mainly because of his trauma with his mother.

They're friends, yes, but not personal friends. Aizou and Yujiro will help Hiyori, but they are not willing to let Hiyori help them outside of work-related issues.

LIPxLIP were able to grow as people because of each other, they rely on each other, they don't need anyone else because they have each other. They enjoy the presence of Hiyori and Minami, and they respect Ft4 as senpais, but that's about it.

Herotaru trashed their stories. Omitting things is fine, but not at the expense of ruining their backstories and personalities.

I think the anime should have been longer so we can focus more on their backstories and personalities. And give us a reason to truly believe that Hiyori, Aizou, and Yujiro are friends, rather than just shrug and say "yeah, they're friends because she said she has a dream".

And no, Yume Fanfare is not for Hiyori. The song is hinted to have been sung during high school, yes, this is after the bullying incident with Chizuru. We know this because we see Chizuru crying in the song Heroine Tarumono and the exact same frame is in Yume Fanfare, which Hiyori does not appear in. They are not gesturing to her, or looking out at her in the audience. She is behind the stage. As seen in the herotaru MV. They are gesturing to each other, singing and dedicating this song to each other. Hell, it goes over their trauma. It does not show us Hiyori's dream. Yume Fanfare is AIZOU AND YUJIRO'S ONLY.

Also Yamako, the creator of them, has said so herself as well. Sooo...yeah.

You can ship what you want, but you cannot and will not take Yume Fanfare from me because a shitty adaptation wanted to be special.

Henny ranks Eurovision 2023 - before the show

i’m kinda late with this this year, i admit. reasons? I guess I can say i’ve been busy, but it’s not all, truth is i’m not that engaged about this year actually... of course there are songs i love, but it’s not a year where i struggle to make a top 10 you know? anyway. enough negativity. let’s take a look, shall we? oh and please not that the songs are not in a certain order within each category.

category: can’t we have two winners please?

Sweden - yeah i’m in my patriotic era again. this is euphoria chapter two, in a good way, and it’d be so cool if she won purely from a statistic point of view... howEVER........

Finland - wouldn’t it just be great with a winner that was... a little rough around the edges? dirty, gritty, would scare your grandma only to later make her nod and say it’s quite a bop afterall? and it’d be the proper reward for finland who has brought their absolut a-game to their national final for the past few years - even though they’ve in my opinion picked the wrong winner from it. until this year that is. yeah, i think i’d like that.

Norway - mgp really stepped up their game as well this year and sometimes i even question if queen of kings is my winner from it (there’s tresko, ekko inni meg, love you in a dream etc etc) but my god it just goes so hard doesn’t it? although WHEN are they putting the version with the intro on spotify?? Ukraine - don’t have much to say about it but it’s alright!

Georgia - this is that kind of song that you only hear in eurovision but when you do you absolutely love it and she does have very impressive vocals, i gotta say

Taeyang - Down to Earth

Initial Thoughts

Having given Taeyang’s latest release, Down to Earth, several release-day listens I want to jot down some of my thoughts. First, as a 10-year VIP I don’t think it can be overstated what this release means to the fandom as a whole. After the dark days of 2018/2019 and all the uncertainty that came with them it was never guaranteed that the fandom would ever have a comeback to celebrate at all, and while we did eventually get Still Life that single felt as much a goodbye as an ‘until we meet again’.

Still, there was the hope that the members would provide new music, individually if not as a re-united foursome. And finally, that long awaited day is here, five years since the last single before Still Life and six years since Taeyang’s last album White Night- a millennia in K-Pop years.

Because of that, it is no surprise that Down to Earth opens with collabs with two of the reigning titans of K-Pop’s third gen. Taeyang’s pre-release single collaboration with Jimin, Vibe, and Shoong! with BlackPink’s Lisa start off the album, giving the feel that they are attempting to pull in the newer generation of K-Pop fans, those who have tuned in after his last release. This is coupled with his presence on Tiktok over the last couple of months since the release of Vibe, an acknowledgment to the way the social media landscape of K-Pop has changed in the last five years.

Vibe and Shoong! Are both serviceable tracks. Not bad, but also not groundbreaking or revolutionary in any way; solid entries in his discography and within their sound. I’ll likely not skip them if they come up on shuffle but I doubt I’d ever go searching for them. That’s fine, they serve their intended purpose.

Seed, however, feels like a song directly to VIPs. A companion piece to last year’s Still Life, it is the ‘hello again’ with the promise of more to come, a brighter future and very intentionally so with its imaery and references (as confirmed by Taeyang himself), the transition from black and white to full color. It’s lyrics acknowledge a rough past of unattainable dreams and its allusions to flowers and paths a referenced any VIP would recognize as an allusion to the Flower Road of 5 years ago. This is a song for the fans, a thank-you rendered in a solid ballad style that Taeyang always excels at. While it may not tread exciting ground musically, its message is what matters to the people it will matter to.

The second half of the album is pure Taeyang at his best, where he really shines. Reason feels like a successor to White Night, croony and musically interesting. In another world Inspiration would have been the pre-release track. Unfortunately Beenzino won’t give the click traffic that Jimin and Lisa will, so I get it. He rounds it all out with Nightfall, which is the standout song for me. It has joined Stay With Me as one of my all time top favs of his. It feels at home in the modern K-Pop soundscape but with a point of view that feels purely Taeyang. I’m gonna be coming back to these last two songs A Lot, I already know. I can only hope he may release an MV for either.

All in all this album is all I would want for as a VIP, an appeal to a new audience, a message to his longtime fans and a facet of Taeyang’s unique artistic voice.

I follow NCT as I like U unit and Resonance era was fun but the 2021 plan went wrong imo. NCT2021 rushed the rpk of 127 and itself was rushed bcs of SMCU and the kickoff of The Link was admist the promotion. The reunion was too near the year end, meaning almost 0 promotion, the content was weak too. I love Universe more than Sticker but the schedule killed the hype, it couldn't benefit the whole grp as Empathy and Resonance did. I'm glad it isn't repeated this year. What a waste.

There were a lot of problems last year. 127's comeback was pushed back due to Olympics. WayV's momentum was interrupted because of Lucas' scandal. The covid restrictions were lifted up than returned again. All winter end of the year music shows had problems. SungTaro's unit's debut was cancelled altogether. aespa's comeback was pushed half a year as well.

We don't know what happens inside the company. SMCU launch was very rushed, and it seems it couldn't have been done without other groups having their comebacks prior to it. Maybe SMCU's launch was needed to show the future prospects to the shareholders and investors. Maybe SM hoped that 2022 will finally open the borders starting from January, so didn't want to postpone NCT's comeback to 2022.

I think you are wrong about "didn't benefit" the units. Firstly, the more money SM gets from albums during no-concert years, the more it has to spend on future comebacks. Secondly, new fans come. 127 got a huge increase in Korean fans over the past years. Each album pre-order numbers increase with evey album.

I'm not saying I want a repeat of NCT2021. I want a repeat of NCT2018. However, I can't agree that the NCT's comeback ruined 127's repack. Favorite was performed a lot on different shows beside music shows. There were vampire theme shows and a great IG story. It wasn't the best comeback budget vise, but a few additional music shows wouldn't make a difference. It where the fans who ruined the mood for themselves more.

4:56 - look how Favorite sales continue untill the end of 2021. They didn't stop when music shows promotion stopped.

P.S. NCT2021 lore videos were beautiful. And "Beautiful" MV brought all NCT together in a very good way, it was like the units were finally truly united in the lore (and not in YT content). So there were some good things beside the songs.

My top 20 kpop songs of 2022

Long time no see!!! It's been a while since I wrote in this blog but I thought I would come back to give you my favorite things of kpop and korean dramas of 2022. First off my favorite songs of the year!

H.M. IVE- Love Dive. Fun song. Honestly I didn't like it the first time I listened to it but it's just so catchy.

20. Mamamoo-ILLELLA. Mamamoo always brings the vocals and this is a feel good song for me.

19. Got the beat-step back. This was released in January and the lyrics left a lot to be desired but the vocals are just insane. I mean BOA, Winter, Seulgi and Wendy, is there more to say? Of course Hyo and Karina killed it too!!

18. Red Velvet-Feel my rythm. This song grew on me. At first I thought it was fun yet weird but as most Red Velvet songs I ended up loving it.

17. Crush ft. J-hope- Rush hour. Crush came back with a bang this year and you know you can count on him delivering vocals but I wasn't expecting to see him do this style of song and has a bit of a Pharrell Williams vibe. J-HOPE rap style went very well with it.

16. ENHYPEN-Polaroid love. Catchy and sweet pop song. This song brightens up my day when I listen to it.

15. AESPA-GIRLS. The fourth episode in their saga against the villain Black Mamba comes to an end with this song. And it brings everything we've come to love from Aespa: great vocals, crazy beat changes and a fun storyline.

14. JAY PARK-Bite. I've always loved Jay Park's vocals more than his rap but in this song both of them shine.

13. TREASURE-JIKJIN. I didn't know how I felt about the beat on the chorus the first few times I listened to this but once again I got hooked and became addicted to it.

12. NCT DREAM-GLITCH MODE. In some ways NCT DREAM has become my favorite NCT sub unit. They just have a great energy and this song has the right amount of witty lyrics, harmonies and a catchy chorus.

11. KEY-GASOLINE. I was about to post this entry when I realized I had left this song out of my list! I don't know why it slipped my mind when this was just EPIC and I'm not talking just about the MV. KEY has really made it this past couple of years when it comes to variety shows so without much to prove he really went all out for this year's comeback. It was almost like he saw the gap TAEMIN left and was like I'm gonna give you everything that is missing in the industry right now: bold styling choices, with a beat full of charisma and a crazy choreo. Why? Because he can.

10. SEULGI- 28 Reasons. Seulgi made her solo debut and it was amazing. For me she is a female Taemin. Not only can she execute complex choreos but she proved she is full of charisma. The lyrics of this song are dark about a toxic relationship but the beat and Seulgi's vocals make it a song you won't get tired of.

9. CHEN-LAST SCENE. If you have a beating heart this song will hit you right in the feels. The first time I listened to it I cried and I'm not a crier. He can convey so much with his voice. Our talented Kim Jongdae is back from the military so all we can do is enjoy his music.

8. WINNER-I LOVE U. I can't get enough of this silly love song. Kang Seungyoon's high notes, Jinwoo's sweet vocals and the rappers witty lyrics make this such a pleasant listen. Definitely one of my most played songs of the year.

7. TAEYEON-INVU. This dance song with off the charts vocals made Taeyeon look different to me. We all know she can sing it all but this song was such a trend and it was no surprise she made it to the top of the korean charts.

6. Zico-Freak. Zico does it all. Singing, producing, rapping and dancing. Such a fun song about being a freak in a apocalyptic world.

5. TXT-Good boy gone bad. Not gonna lie. When TXT debuted I wasn't a fan but this year they really stood out for me. And my favorite song of them is this one. I love the chorus, the attitude an the vocals.

4. KANG SEUNG YOON-Born to love you. According to Spotify this was my most listened kpop song of the year. Honestly I was surprised because the first time I listened to it I was like cute song but I wish Seungyoon had chosen more of a belter because I love his head voice high notes. But it's so addictive. Bang Yedam is a great producer and I hope he does more of it now that he left TREASURE.

3. BIG BANG-Still life. This song is bittersweet. We all expected a grand comeback from BIG BANG after their military service. Scandals and the pandemic pushed it until this year. Sadly we only got one song and as of today only GDRAGON and TAEYANG remain with YG so we don't know how long it will take to get another comeback. However the song itself is another BIGBANG master piece. The lyrics that talk about the past. My favorite part: Taeyang's vocals.

2. BLACKPINK- Pink Venom. It seems I just keep repeating myself but when I listened to this song I was put off by the chorus. Then again fast forward a month and I found myself obsessed with this song. The old school rap beats with the trendy dance beat is just crazy good and also so YG.

1. Be'O-Love me. I said this last year but I fell just like half of Korea for BE'O in Show Me The Money. And sometimes in reality shows they do great and then when they release their stuff afterwards I don't necessary love it but BE'O can do no wrong in my eyes these days. His songs tend to be straight forward and have uncomplicated beats and this feel good song just made my 2022 happier.

Hey! Long time no talk, sorry about that! It’s been crazy over here with the holidays and work. I hope all is well with you!!

I totally get what you mean about music. I adore music, but a lot of newer music (at least music in my country) doesn’t give me the same feeling older music does. Kpop in all its extravagance really gets me, and it makes me feel - whether it be happy sad etc. it’s fun! Which is what I think a lot of new music is missing.

Voodoo Doll by Vixx is soooo good. Love how dark it is, I really wish more groups got that dark. The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Girls by Nature - the MV was way darker than I thought kpop mvs could be.

Also I’ve never been to Iceland but from the pictures I’ve seen it’s absolutely breathtaking! I don’t know much about their beliefs but elves and fairies are super cool so more power to them lol

And I think MX is pretty unique, but honestly I’d like to see them collab with Aespa - just for Jooheon lol I don’t know if you’ve seen but Jooheon’s Next Level obsession is hilarious. I don’t know how it’s sound musically but it’d be fun.

Also my bias is Wonho! Well, now that he’s gone from the group I’d say kihyun. But that changes like. Daily lol

I think a vacation with wonho would be super fun! Maybe exploring a city and going shopping. That or going out to drink with Changkyun and Jooheon.

Dear friend! So glad to hear from you, I was getting worried. Ok, not really, because I have been equally busy. Holidays have started for us and I spent half a day yesterday locked in a car with my husband and kid as we left the country to visit my mother in law and therefore my free time has decreased exponentially…

It makes me happy to hear you love music too and I agree. Like 5 years ago I would still listen to the radio, now we only do it when we travel by car. For the rest I listen to Spotify and YouTube and that way I can choose what I hear.

But if I could choose..maybe I'd like min and nunu singing again. Something soft and romantic, but with a punch, so not a ballad.

Vmin and songs... Come on!

I don’t know why not more people look at all the song connections we have between Vmin. Of course they could mean nothing romantic, but come on!

To start with we already have 4 songs with explicit connections between Vmin: The 95z Graduation song, 4 o’clock, Taehyung’s Christmas song and of course Friends. Then we also have smaller things like Jimin and Taehyung’s covers for Promise and Winter Bear being connected to each other.

Let's look at a rough timeline with things we know are facts.

2016: The dumpling incident happens (something Vmin both says brought them closer), and the reconciliation at dawn which is later used as inspiration for two songs. Jimin says he wants to be Taehyung’s strength. Taehyung starts writing on 4 o’clock. Lie and Stigma are released. Jimin says he wants to give a song to the person he loves for Christmas. Jimin and Taehyung each release a small video of them singing "Have yourself a marry little Christmas", Jimin's video is a reply to Taehyung's. Christmas is a holiday for couples in Korea.

2017: Jimin and Taehyung call each other soulmates for the first time. Taehyung starts writing the Christmas song sometime during 2017. Taehyung is denied to sing the Christmas song with Jimin because it's not fitting for two men to sing the romantic lyrics. Release of 4 o'clock, which has a reference to the gay movie "Moonlight" and is directly connected to Jimin and Taehyung, with the memories about fighting and Taehyung waiting for Jimin in a park and talking things out. Only Namjoon mentions the connection.

2018: In that year’s FESTA Taehyung says he will give Jimin a song. During tour Taehyung talks about the Christmas song on Vlive specifically mentioning wanting to originally sing it with Jimin and the lyrics being unfit for two men to sing according to the producer. He says he doesn’t think he will release the song. The same day Jimin was out taking photos in Brooklyn, one which was of the phone case Taehyung personally designed (matching his own phone case) and gave Jimin with the word “Fungus” written on it as a reference to Serendipity. The Promise cover is shot by Tae ("Special thanks to V, best photographer.") and the song is released only minutes after Taehyung’s birthday ended.

2019: Jimin accidentally reveals Scenery in a vlive and aplogizes by tweeting he loves Taehyung. A month after Promise is released Scenery comes out and has a reference to 4 o'clock, specifically the park scene we know has connections to Jimin. Jimin tweets a video with the song. Winter Bear comes out and is Jimin's favorite song in the world and he promotes it a lot. He calls it Baby Bear. The two bears on the cover are a gift from Jimin. Jimin says he is possesive over the song and his friend. He talks about the song in three vlives and hasn’t stopped singing it since. Taehyung calls Jimin his "One and only best friend" during FESTA. Taehyung plays his Christmas song again on vlive showing he still has the song but haven’t worked on it and mentions it is a male-female duet now.

2020: Jimin writes, composes and produces "Friends" where Vmin sing about being soulmates and to stay together for eternity after BTS is over. It is the first song Jimin has produced for an official BTS album. Taehyung keeps naming Jimin as his best friend (Festa 2019, Japan FC magazine and introduced Jimin as his best friend to the girl from the ON MV). Taehyung also mentioned the dumpling fight as a moment which he felt “released arrows with various emotions pent up” in his heart. Taehyung releases Sweet Night about feelings changing for your best friend and in an interview about it says he tends to write about things he has felt. During FESTA Taehyung himself for the first time talks about 4 o'clock and the story behind it being connected to Jimin. They also talk about wanting to work together more for many different things. Right after the release of that unit interview with Jimin he comes to Vlive, talks about his mixtape and mentions a song which is like a continuation to 4 o'clock. On ITS and in the BE planning vlive Vmin mentions wanting to work together again. Jimin even makes Taehyung promise him to write him a song.

Then we get yet another Vmin collaboration for BE and in general Vmin both seem to want to work together a lot as well as support each other in their solo projects. I think it is even possible Vmin are some of the members who have expressed wanting to work together in one way or another the most. Which says a lot in my opinion.

This alone should be enough to look closer at Vmin, and there is a whole lot more than that when you do look closer.

lou decide to stay rather quite because she felt she didn’t have the right to say something about the performance of people who had trained way longer than her

she just hoped that the other members would be honest so that they could deliver perfect stages at the end

absolutely nervous to perform in front of JYP again

“Maybe it’s because there wasn’t much choreography but you did surprisingly well.”

“It didn’t feel like much of a compliment…”

and apparently “surprisingly well” doesn’t mean the same as “your performance was good” because she was up for elimination again

didn’t want to believe that Minho was actually eliminated

almost cried ngl but she held back her tears because she didn’t want JYP to see her cry for some reason

but once he was gone and the others also cried, she just couldn’t hold it back anymore
