Reason Why I Watch It: because FRAGGLES i love them i want to live there i want to be a fraggle so bad… my ideal body is fraggle.. fraggles literally living my dream life they look cool, don’t have jobs, and use their skills to help their community but mostly they just do whatever and be autistic

Why I Started Watching It: as a muppet fan i had obviously heard of them and had watched a few episodes i think but i didn’t get really SUPER into them until october 2021 when my cat died and i really needed an escape to something fun and colorful and then it took over my life (i literally made my own mokey costume for halloween that same month)

Something I love about The Far Roofs is how much of a swerve its premise is if you're coming to it uninitiated.

Okay, so there's these talking rats with a culture of swashbuckling heroism – basic Redwall/Reepicheep stuff.

Also, there's a magical realm called the Far Roofs which exists above every human community, and that's where the rats go adventuring; a little weird, but you can see the precedents in popular fiction. It's like wainscot fantasy taken to its logical-yet-absurd conclusion.

By default, the game wants you to play as a fictionalised version of your (presumably human!) self and go up onto the Far Roofs to have adventures with the rats. All right, now it's coming together: it's like isekai fantasy meets The Muppet Show, with you as the obligatory human character, right?

Then we get to the nature of those adventures: the rats have this whole culture built around questing against beings they call "the Mysteries" – beasties with names like Harpy and Goblin and Unicorn. So basically it's a bunch of muppety rats on the roofs fighting Dungeons & Dragons monsters, and you go up and help them do it. Great.

And then you get to what the Mysteries are actually like, and... well, I'm going to let the following excerpt carry the weight here. (This particular bit of text also appears in a previously published work by the same author, so I'm not giving anything away that's still under wraps.)

Unicorn, which is named Numinous, dwells three steps away and beyond the world, but most often in the Farthest Roofs, where the Steppes of the Sky come down to touch the Vast and Earthen Court. There it is stepping upwards from the world, as it has always been stepping upwards from the world, caught in a moment of transcendent glory that does not complete. It simply is. Melanthios heard the footsteps of Unicorn. Melanthios heard the ringing of Unicorn’s bells. So Melanthios chased Unicorn off to the Farthest Roofs, and Melanthios did not return. Anton and Karel, who were his sons, were wiser than their father. They heard the bells but they did not follow. Instead, they memorized the scent. They gathered swords, and ropes, and nets, and they went out. They brought food and water and all manner of gear. They clung to the roofs with all four feet wheresoever after Unicorn they went. It proved no good. Anton looked up, and Karel to his brother. The world came down— That’s what Karel said. He had time to look away. He had time to bury his head in his paws. He did not see the fullness of Unicorn’s presence. He only saw Anton his brother become unreal. In the light of the moment of the Unicorn, Anton became as a paper figure in the fire. His reality burned out. His shadow seared into the roofs behind him. Where he’d stood, for just a moment, the Steppes of the Sky came down to touch the Vast and Earthen Court; and Anton was gone away. So Karel ran and Karel ran and Karel ran from the Unicorn; and all his life, he envied but was more fortunate than his brother.

These are gods. You're going up there to kill God.

Like, it's still silly wainscot fantasy with funny talking rats, but there's that tension. It's like if Fraggle Rock occasionally took a hard turn to serious cosmic horror – Lord Dunsany by way of Jim Henson – and that tonal juxtaposition was treated as something unremarkable.

Basically what I'm saying is go back The Far Roofs.

So we know how Wally is with Kermit and Elmo but what would he be like with some of Jim Henson's other creations? Like the Fraggles from Fraggle rock or some of the puppets from labyrinth

The puppets from the Labyrinth may not be Wally’s speed but the Fraggles are definitely a blast to hang with. Wally finds them to be very down to earth and the easiest puppets to talk to, they’re very involved with puppet rights.

Not to mention, they throw the best parties that leave them feeling refreshed and relaxed.

This was supposed to be out days ago but worries,were in fact, for another day 🌸

Last minute teletubbie 🥱 They’re nice enough but it took a while to get used to the language barrier. After that they don’t really have much in common, Wally has no bad things to say about them.

In honour of Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock season 2 dropping later this month (I believe its dropping on the 26th or the 29th??) it's time to reveal my Fraggle Rock OC!!

Boober is my favourite from the main five, so of course I decided to make them related! Phoebe is...well, she's everything that Boober isn't! She's bright, chipper, social and optimistic! She's an exceptionally good rock climber (and worrying Boober in the process) and loves insects of all sorts, flutterflies being her favourite! With how different her and Boober are they can but heads and argue a lot, but they do have their similarities: both love cooking, though Phoebe is still learning, and just like her brother Phoebe has a particular distaste for certain odours

Still being a kid Phoebe is restricted to exploring Fraggle Rock, she's never seen the Gorgs garden before, but is fascinated by 'outer space'. Though still being a kid, and Boober's worrying, she's often left out on the adventures the main five have, much to her annoyance.

One day she does venture out from Fraggle Rock and becomes friends with Lottie, whom she then later travels the world with to help Lottie with her self discovery journey. I like to imagine when Phoebe is older, she becomes a professional rock climber in Fraggle Rock, helping give lessons to younger Fraggles and even helping the doozers with their construction work from time to time!

(I imagine Phoebe to be around 6-10, that was the age range I had in mind when drawing her)

Okay I’m going to bitch about the Fraggle Rock reboot and how much I hate the way the redesigned Mokey

DISCLAIMER: if you like or even live the reboot, that’s so so valid and I love that for you. I’m not here to tell you what and what not to enjoy. Love what you love. Live your best life

That being said

and can’t stand the reboot’s redesign of Mokey. Now, I haven’t seen the reboot, and I don’t plan too. But there’s just one thing that makes me fucking furious, and that’s Mokey’s redesign.

I hate it.

“But Zeke, “hate” is a strong word, you can’t find it that bad can you?”

I can and I will. as far as I’m concerned, that isn’t Mokey. Mokey would NEVER look like that. NEVER.

this redesign doesn’t even look like her! If I didn’t know better I’d think it was a completely different character! They took everything I loved about Mokey and ruined it

The colors are the most egregious to me. They took Mokey’s soft pastel colors and cranked up the saturation. And they don’t even look good together, they aren’t even appealing.

and like. She doesn’t even fit in with her friends anymore, she sticks out like a sore thumb. OG Mokey fit right in, but Reboot Mokey just doesn’t. She feels like she’s from a different show.

AND NO ONE ELSE GOT REDESIGNED, SO WHY DID MOKEY??? HER DESIGN WAS JUST FINE

secondly they gave her a dress and that makes me want to maim someone. I LIKED HER WIZARD CARDIGAN. SHE LOOKED NONBINARY AND AS A NONBINARY PERSON I LIKED THAT A LOT. It’s like they gave her a dress to say “look she’s a girl. Because girls wear dresses. And so she has to wear one”. I know Nonbinary people can wear dresses but it just feels weird to me as a nonbinary person who relates a lot to Mokey and gets dysphoria from dresses.

also they took away the stoned wizard vibe of the og and made her look like a TikTok white girl and I HATE IT. Mokey is a stoner wizard, not a TikTok girl.

and if you look at the redesign you would never in a million years guess what her personality was supposed to be. She looks like a peppy cottagecore type, not her actual dreamy artist with an egotistical streak. And that’s bad character design imo. You can tell everyone’s personality by looking at them EXCEPT FOR HER. OG Mokey looked like she would be dreamy and artistic, and she IS.

All in all they took away every design element that made Mokey,, Mokey and it makes me so fucking mad so I have done what I must and said “the reboot isn’t Fraggle Rock. It isn’t part of the series I love. It’s its own thing, NOT Fraggle Rock” because im not letting it get in the way of enjoying Fraggle Rock.

(Deep breath) it’s not very good. I don’t like it

I love the contrast between the two things that my mind has really latched onto from season 2 of "Back to the Rock," because on the one hand... Episode 5, "I'm Pogey!", was just so meaningful to me. I love Wembley, he's been my favorite fraggle since the days of the original and the rebooted take on him still holds that title, and as someone who is fluid in his own gender presentation it was very heartwarming seeing Wembley, a character I often call "such a mood," be a big part of the episode handling this topic. And then on top of the more implied and vague stuff (which, let me be clear, is not a complaint, it was all handled perfectly imo) you have Pogey, the first Henson Studio character I'm aware of to be canonically, explicitly they/them non-binary. I already found them so endearing last season, and the reason they are proud of their name and love to share it really, deeply resonated with me.

...And then on the other hand, it seems every season I'm just destined to be surprised by my interest in a new fraggle (or similar!) character with a connection to Mokey and voiced by a guest star. I didn't find Pryce quite as lovable as Lyle, but I still really like him. (Gee, my favorite modern character is Louie Duck and I like the green character doing a capitalist hustle, who woulda thought?) But the other thing with Pryce is the questions he raises! He comes from a different community of fraggles where "this for that" is the norm, and I just want to know more about that!

Shoutout to my bonus obsessions of the season, Ma Gorg getting the character glow-up I always longed to see her have in the original show, and of course, the affection between Gobo and Wembley being shown even more and in even sweeter ways. I really didn't think things could get gayer between them after Night of the Lights, but nah, Back to the Right seems determined to spoil the small (but currently feasting) group of fans shipping them. Love it.

And just in general, this season was great. It felt both even more entertaining and even more important in the messages it looks to teach youngsters (and hopefully adults too) than the first, which already did so much in both regards.

who are these fraggles you keep preaching about i would like to know more about them

OMG!!! FRAGGLES

They are the product of Jim Henson (if you have seen a puppet he was probably involved. Some of his most popular peices of media are The Muppets, Seasame Street, Labrynth, Bear in the Big Blue House).

The fraggles are from his TV show Fraggle Rock (1983). The fraggles live in a hole in the wall of Doc and Sprokets house.

In this hole there are three species, fraggles (yippee), doozers (builders), and gorgs (they call themselves the rulers of the world, fraggle haters)

The series focuses on Gobo, Mokey, Wembley, Boober (my favorite), and Red. They are just silly guys exploring and learning about eachother and the world around them!!

At the same time Gobos uncle, Uncle Matt explores "outer space" aka the human world and sends post cards to the fraggles about his adventures.

In the end, our main fraggles become freinds with everyone, even the gorgs!!

I grew up with the series my family owns them all on DVD set, and it's one of my favorite Henson projects :3

They released a new version on Apple TV+ recently, but I'm not that big of a fan (admittedly I went in judgemental because I hold fraggle rock in such a high light and I should probably give it a second chance.)

this is borderline crack, but, steve and robin who get out of hawkins and run away to new york. a sequence of hijinks ensue and they make their way through the ranks of broadway in tiny roles here and there until their big break: Cats The Musical. do I know anything about broadway? no. do I wanna imagine stobin as mungojerrie and rumpleteazer doing flips and singing about stealing shit, all in fuzzy bodysuits and facepaint? Yes. Yes I do.

ANON!!! Listen I've never seen Cats but I have enough peripheral knowledge to NEED THIS!!!! I want musical theater stobin so BADLY. Stick them in the chorus line, make them the support acts, an ensemble cast i don't CARE. I just need to hear about them chatting shit to each other while doing their hair and makeup right before show time, both of them ridiculously last minute because they were too busy deciding on what to order for dinner.

I want them giving nods and checking on each other as they run past each other back stage between scene changes or costume changes. At home in their shared apartment, spending days running lines with each other and ad libbing HORRIFICALLY making each other cry because its too funny and then catching each other's eye on stage and almost corpsing from the memory of their practices.

Essentially sharing a wardrobe because they pretty much live in warm up leggings/too big tshirts/big socks and they genuinely don't know who owns what anymore. For a while Robin could have sworn the fraggle rock tshirt was hers but she really can't be sure.

They rarely do stage door but when they do they are favourites because they practically have a routine going to snipping at each other, making a competition between who can sign the most or get the most photos and the fans love it. It may look like they are frantic and all over the place but it's a practiced performance, in truth they are aware of each other the entire time, always in each other's vision and safe.

Then when they make their big brake? Oh baby Broadway isn't ready for Buckley and Harrington. They worked their way to the top and they aren't about to be pushed back down.
