Which is true to an extent, but I don’t think that demanding that she be sanitized to become a generic bland mom friend or supportive background girlfriend or whatever fandom likes to do to female characters is the solution either

because Jian Lan is kind of awful—she swears, she’s violent, she makes aggressive sexual advances. Some of it is a front she puts up and some of it is her response to all the traumatic events in her life, but these are ultimately core aspects of her character and writing her in a way that removes these traits to avoid the accusation of Demonizing Her For A Ship still isn’t doing her justice. She’s a foul-mouthed sex worker, of course she’s going to come across a certain way in fics.

Anyway. I can only remember closing one fic due to the author using extremely misogynistic language towards Jian Lan, but I can think of a lot of examples of her personality being wiped away to make her into some kind of unrecognizably nice and supportive cheerleader in that way that fandom loves doing to female characters. I would really like it if that wasn’t the default either :,I
