🧡 Name?

"Just call me V."

his first chosen name was penn, but he started going by vance after his medical transition. he doesn't give it out freely bc that was the name arasaka knew him by; he doesn't mention his surname, either, bc it's a pretty prominent one with much of its members still working for the megacorp in question.

🧡 Nickname?

"...Well, last I checked, 's still V."

apart from "mano" from jackie, vance doesn't have much in terms of nicknames. his old netrunning handle was N3tH0und (net hound); it's a retired username that's been largely scrubbed from the net, but sometimes he signs his major hacks with it just to fuck with people. it's a ghost's name, and it's fun to haunt the net only when he knows for certain that it can't be traced back to him.

🧡 Gender?

"Guy! Never been asked that outright before."

🧡 Star sign?

"'s not my scene--can't say I know much about it--but Misty's got me down as a Cancer, whatever that means. Says that's probably why I'm, er, so 'intuitive', as she called it. You ask me, that's just the merc work--bein' able to read a room, that is."

i first drew vance on july 7, 2023, so i consider that his birthday. like vance, i have no idea how being a cancer applies to him, but google says cancers are loyal, domestically inclined, and committed to their loved ones, so that sounds about right!

🧡 Height?

"Six flat. Johnny's pretty sure I'm taller than 'im...but he's slouchin' all the time, so don't think he's got a say in it."

🧡 Orientation?

"Usually go for other guys. But I guess the definition of that is pretty loose these days, 'specially in NC, huh. The hell does it matter to me if you've got certain...parts. If you're a guy, you're a guy, and if you're down, I'm down, y'know?"

vance is a gay man with a preference for masculine-identifying individuals. like he said, if you identify as a "guy" in any form, then that's good enough for him. he's not one to talk about having "appropriate" parts, and he thinks it's dumb that they're gendered in the first place. he's not usually looking for anything serious and he's more than okay with just being an input and having one as well.

🧡 Nationality/ethnicity?

"Nay's Indian. Tay's Filipino. Ya ask anyone, I look more like my mom."

nanay and tatay are the filipino words for mother and father, respectively. vance has a very limited grasp of either language but he at least knows that much from his dad's mother tongue.

🧡 Favorite fruit?

"Oh, man, 's been a while--this one time when I was growin' up, think I was ten or eleven, 'Saka sent Dad a basket of 'ganic fruit. For his 50 years o' service, I think it was. Anyway, had my first apple then. What I wouldn't fuckin' give for one right now."

🧡 Favorite season?

"Gotta be winter. I got to go a lot of places back in '65--Europe, mostly--an' most of them were snowy. Loved seein' my breath fog up. You don't get that here. You get hot rains and the pavement steamin'--guess it's pretty, in its way, with all the city's neon shinin' through the rain.

"But it ain't a real winter without snow."

🧡 Favorite flower?

"If ya hike it out to the Badlands in the summer, you'll find these little white flowers blooming on the cacti; Net says they're called Saguaro blooms. I like their...tenacity, I 'spose."

"But if I had to give ya a traditional answer...blue hydrangeas. Maya--she used to grow 'em in her apartment, still don't know how she did it--she gave me some blooms for my birthday back in '70. A welcome home kinda thing. Don't got her green thumb, so they died a week later...but they were real pretty. Somethin' to look forward to comin' home to."

🧡 Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate?

"Coffee--can't say it works for me, though."

he likes all three and refuses to drink his coffee black. he will put so much milk and creamer in that cup that it might as well be a dessert. johnny is disgusted (affectionate).

🧡 Average hours of sleep?

"...Hours, plural?"

vance is a champ at power naps and between the relic and an insomnia left over from his arasaka days, he doesn't get to bed much. if you do somehow get him into bed by morning, however, be prepared to not see him until near-evening the next day.

🧡 Dog or cat person?

note: those 10,000 photos are just the ones he has on his phone; do not look at the cloud where his kiroshi photos are stored.

🧡 Dream trip?

"...Was actually, erm, thinkin' of--well, when we get all this shit sorted out--I was thinkin'...might bring Johnny somewhere colder. Somewhere with snow. Said he hasn't seen snow before, so, I-unno, thought he might like it out there."

please take this time to imagine johnny in his android body nuzzled up to vance in the snow, red-faced and, for the first time in a long time, in awe. they're going to have hot chocolate later in some cabin vance rented out for the season--but right now, they're watching their shared breath cloud together in the air, simpatico even in this.

🧡 Favorite fictional character?

"Oh, oh--there's this real old holovid I used to loop when I was fifteen. 's fucked how they got most of it right. Anyhow, Rick Deckard. I used to think he was so damn cool."

deckard, with his big-collared jacket and general gruffness, was definitely one of vance's transition goals. that, and he watched br2049 right after--with how deckard was treating K, vance started projecting Really Fucking Heavily on K. like wow! you're a total killing machine with a father who just might love you. that's crazay man. could not be me

🧡 Number of blankets you sleep with?

"Run pretty warm as it is already, so just the one. Like the...texture of it, as it were. The weight o' it."

get this man a weighted blanket please god. i think it would fix him. alternatively, just lay on top of him and he'll be happy.

🧡 Random fact?

"I used to klep a lotta shit when I was a kid. Wires, chips, motherboards--mostly tech, really, from the vendin' machines and bus stops 'round the city. Sold 'em for a pretty eddie down in Heywood; got no buyers in the Hill, not when we could all afford the tech those Heywood kids were tryin' to kitbash together in the first place. Don't really know why I did it.

"To strike out, maybe? Maybe I liked the challenge. There's somethin' about makin' a machine give its own parts to you; get a vending machine to dispense its motherboard, a bus stop sign its LED, and ya feel like ya can make anythin' bend to your will."

Based on this ask from @icecoffee90, she wanted a fic about Jackie & Bryce arguing over "eating all their food" and the roomies discussing "all the people they bring into their shared space."

Summary: Jackie is looking forward to her first day off of work in longer than she can remember when Bryce unintentionally messes things up. After a meltdown, new rules are created.

A/N: I haven't written a "roomies chaos" fic in some time, and it was so much fun to do one again. I hope you enjoy it! Participating in @choicesmonthlychallenge 's August challenge by doing a throwback to the January challenge with the prompt "Friends."

The life of a medical resident isn’t an easy one. But with a bit of creativity, there are ways to muddle through. One of the highlights? The rare, precious, and cherished day off, and today, Jackie Varma finally had one of those days. She hit snooze on her alarm clock five times... just because she could. She was about to hit it a sixth time just for fun when her eyes popped open. 

There was a very good reason to finally drag herself out of bed at noon: the delicious leftovers she had brought home last night. The hospital had hosted a luncheon and told everyone to take leftovers home. You don’t have to say that to a broke resident twice, especially when penne gorgonzola from Carmelina’s was among the offerings. The delicious delicacy definitely beat the instant ramen noodles she normally had for lunch. But that’s OK, she thought with a smile. Today, she had her leftovers.   

She thought about getting dressed, but this was her day off.  One of the highlights of this high holy day was sitting around in pajamas. Her roommates understood and had seen her in worse, so she wrapped her hair in a messy bun, slipped her feet into her fuzzy slippers, and off to the kitchen she went. She heard people conversing, and as nice as it would have been to have the place alone for a bit, she was used to living with four roommates, so she didn’t let it dampen her mood. Besides, she was about to have penne gorgonzola. If memory served, it tasted even better heated up the next day. She knew she was excited because she swore she could almost smell it, then she stepped into the kitchen and...

“Hey, Jackie!” Bryce flashed her his signature grin just before sticking his fork in the last piece of her precious penne. This was a declaration of war.

“Wha... what... WHAT ARE YOU DOING!” She screamed so ferociously Elijah, Sienna, and Casey came running from their rooms. “What the HELL are you doing!?”

Bryce had no idea how a simple greeting could have escalated so quickly.

“Nothing!” He defended, eyes wide. “What’s wrong?”

Jackie was already at his side, not-so-playfully hitting her now-sworn enemy.

“YOU ATE MY FOOD! Do you have any idea how much I was looking forward to that?”

“Oh, I’m sor...”

“SAVE IT! That was penne gorgonzola from Carmelina’s!”

“I know,” Bryce replied sheepishly. “And it was delicious.”

Casey silently gave Bryce the “cut-it” signal, mouthing, “Not helping!”

“YOU DON’T EVEN LIVE HERE!” Jackie hollered. She turned to her roommates. “Why is he here! Who brought him here?” But before anyone could answer, she directed her ire back to Bryce. “WHY ARE YOU ALWAYS HERE?”

“OK, Jackie... simmer down,” Casey pleaded. “I know you’re pissed, but Bryce is our friend, and....”

“He was my friend,” Jackie snapped. “Past tense. Who comes into an apartment THAT IS NOT HIS and eats someone’s leftovers!”

“Jackie,” Sienna said nervously. “This isn’t entirely Bryce’s fault. He asked if he could have my leftovers, which were also in the fridge, and I said yes. I’m really sorry.”

“OK, so what are your leftovers? I’ll eat them.”

“Uh... a cheeseburger from McDonald’s...”

Jackie slumped into a chair with a sigh of frustration. Her head fell into her hands, and, to everyone’s shock, she began crying.

Elijah shook his head at Bryce. “Oh my God, you broke her!”

“OK! I’m really sorry, Jackie, but if we’re being fair, you ate the rest of my sea-salt caramel ice cream.”

“That was in OUR freezer! Why are you keeping your ice cream in OUR freezer!”

“Because he practically lives here,” Aurora yawned as she entered the kitchen. “What’s going on? You woke me up.”

“I’m glad you’re here, Aurora,” Jackie replied, ignoring her question.  “Because we need to set new rules in this place.”

“Jackie,” Bryce said sympathetically, “I’ll go on Uber Eats and order you another penne gorgonzola right now...”

“Forget it!” she said, holding up her hand. “Bryce.  I tolerate you and all, but why are you always here? You have your own apartment.  I’d KILL for my own apartment.  But no, I have to put up with these four, and you’re here so much you make it five. And Elijah...”

“What did I do?” Elijah asked nervously.

“Why is Baz here all the damn time playing video games... in the living room... next to where I am trying to sleep!”

“We can get headsets...”

“But why is he always here!?”

“Jackie,” Sienna jumped in. “It’s not bad for us to have our friends over.”

“No, it’s not,” Casey agreed. “But Jackie does have a point.”

“Says you!” Jackie barked.

“What do you mean?” Casey gasped.

“Do you think I need to see Tobias stumbling out of your room shirtless when I get up to pee at two a.m.!”

“What?” Aurora’s eyes lit up.  “Two a.m. is when that happens? Damn... I’ll have to set the alarm.”

“That’s my boyfriend, Aurora,” Casey teased.

“Oh, I don’t want him in the least! He’s all yours. But hey, eyecandy is eyecandy.”

“So,” Bryce asked, “if I take off my shirt more often when I come over, can I stay on the drop-in anytime list?”

“Yes!” Aurora said as all the others yelled, “No!”

Jackie turned to her with a look of disgust.  “When the hell did you become Miss Thirsty?”

“Ahh...” she shrugged. “I haven’t had a date in a while.”

“Guys,” Casey attempted to get everyone’s attention. “Can we go back to before my boyfriend was sexually objectified...”

“Guilty!” Aurora grinned.

“I was going to say, maybe we should have more rules about other people coming over.  No offense, Bryce.”

“Offence taken,” he nodded.

“I suppose it wouldn’t be the worst thing to have nights where we say no guests,” Sienna agreed.

“Quiet nights.” Aurora enthused. “That’s what we need, just nights where we know we can unwind a bit.”

“Since our schedules are so erratic, we can do them a month in advance...” Sienna offered.

“I think it’s a good idea,” Elijah agreed.  “Why don’t we have roomies meeting this weekend.  That doesn’t include you, Bryce.”

Bryce grasped his chest in mock horror.  “I’m hurt!”

“Or we could divide the rent by six, then you can come and go as you please,” Aurora smirked.

“Ehh, I can see you all at Donahue’s,” he smiled. “Jackie, I am really sorry about your leftovers.  But you know, if you ever want a little more privacy, you can use my apartment.  I’m almost never there.”

“We know,” they all said in unison.

“That’s so nice of you!” Elijah smiled.

“I was only offering it to Jackie,” Bryce winked.

“Bryce, I’m sorry for having a meltdown on you.  It’s just....”

“... just that you’ve slept ten hours in the past week, and you don’t always have much to look forward to, and I ... inadvertently ... took one of those rare treats away today.”

“Yeah,” Jackie smiled. “That.”

“I get it,” Bryce grinned. “You know, people always see my brilliance and this body, but they never see that I’m empathetic, too.”

“And humble,” Casey said, bumping his shoulder.  “Don’t forget, humble.”

Just then, the doorbell rang.  “Oh, no!” Casey said. “Who is dropping in now.”

“That would be the delivery man,” Bryce smiled.  “While you guys were having your roommate's legislation session, I ordered Carmelina’s for all of us.”

“You did!” Elijah grinned. “Hell, I say we have a rule that Bryce still gets to come over whenever he wants!”

“If he’s bringing food,” Jackie smiled.  “Thank you, Bryce.”

“Don’t mention it... roomie.”

Hey!, could I ask for “I moved on.” for the prompt ask? For Donna and Jackie talking again after a long time, and we don't know what happened between the gang and why they distanced.

Jackie and Donna at first somewhat resentful they catch up, talk about Jay and Leia and how they unexpectedly ended up dating, have a nice summer :D

Across the table from the men, Jackie and Donna were engaged in their own conversation.

"I'm so glad you suggested this, Jackie," Donna smiled. "We really need to catch up. It's been..." she trailed off, thinking about the last time she'd seen her old high school friend.

"At least four years," Jackie supplied. "I think the last time I saw you was at Margie Kelso's wedding."

"Yeah. And god, it's been even longer since we've actually talked," Donna agreed. "We all kinda lost touch after you and Fez..." she trailed off again.

"Yeah. Yeah, we don't ever really talk about it," Jackie nodded, subtly indicating Kelso just across the table from them.

"Right."

A slightly uncomfortable silence fell between them.

"So do you - " / "What happened after - "

They tried to speak at the same time.

"Oh, um. You first," Jackie offered, graciously. Donna eyed her curiously. This wasn't the same girl she'd known in the '70s.

Donna cleared her throat. "I was just gonna ask what happened to you after that new years. I - I feel like I never really saw you again." She shrugged. "I knew you were around, but things were just... different, I guess."

"Yeah," Jackie smiled sadly. "They were different."

Jackie explained what she could - how her pregnancy with Michael complicated every aspect of her life back then. She described her rise to fame on What's Up Wisconsin, and how she threw herself into life as a new wife and later as a single mom when Michael inevitably cheated on her again.

"I just... I moved on," she summarized, a wistful expression on her face as she thought about the last fifteen or so years without her friends.

"Wow, Jackie." Donna fought the urge to set her hand over the smaller woman's perfectly manicured one. They weren't close like that anymore, but the moment felt heavy with emotion. And regret.

"Anyway," Jackie's whole demeanor turned on a dime, and suddenly she was the perky, bitchy cheerleader she'd been in high school again. Donna remembered how she'd never liked pity.

"Now Michael and I are back together and we're the power couple of Point Place." Jackie pinched the fabric of her dress between her fingers. "Do you know how much this dress cost, Donna?" She smirked condescendingly. "Probably more than your whole wardrobe."

Donna chuckled and lifted an eyebrow. "Yeah, probably."

"You're a writer?" Jackie quizzed, returning the inquisition now. Both women picked at their entrees.

"I am," Donna smiled. "I have two collections of short stories published, and my first novel came out a year and a half ago."

"It was a best-seller, right?"

"Yeah. Did you read it?" Donna's eyes were alight with excitement.

"No," Jackie waved her fork dismissively. "But my hairdresser did. Antonia," she nodded and took a bite of her penne pasta. "She said it was good. Kind of sexy."

Donna blushed.

"Which is surprising because apparently you're still with Eric."

Now Donna rolled her eyes. "Jackie..."

"I lost a bet on that one, let me tell you."

"Well, we're really happy."

Donna expected another snarky response, but instead Jackie wiped her mouth with her napkin primly and said, "Good." Then she flagged down their waiter, and requested a bottle of red wine for the table.

"Jackie," Donna hissed. "A bottle?"

Jackie raised her eyebrows. "Well, we have some business to discuss, Donna."

Donna raised her eyebrows.

The maître d' delivered the wine and two glasses, and uncorked it for them before pouring each Donna and Jackie a healthy pour. Jackie picked up her glass and took a long sip.

"Jay and Leia," she said finally. "My son is dating your daughter. What do we think about that?"

Donna reached for her glass, too. "Leia's a good girl," she said evenly, looking at the top of her wine rather than Jackie. "I don't want to see her get hurt."

"Jay's a good boy," Jackie responded coolly. "He wouldn't hurt a fly."

"Well then we shouldn't have any problems," Donna smiled tightly, and took a long sip.

"No," Jackie agreed. Her mouth was stained red from her beverage. "Maybe we'll get to go baby shopping together after all."

Donna grimaced. "Too soon, Jackie."

She nodded. Understood.
