Year-End Cleanup

Hello!

You said you watch anime, so, out of curiosity, what are your fave anime series and why?

"Watch anime" is overstating it a bit. I've watched anime, but I don't regularly watch or keep up with the shows. But my favorite anime is Yuri on Ice. All the characters are great, the story is well written, it has a feel good ending that, while open enough for a new season, doesn't leave any huge cliffhangers and the characters are all in a good place, so it's a good ending if season 1 is all they make. My only complaint is that I can't watch it without bawling my eyes out, so I have to watch it in total seclusion XD

My second favorite is Azumanga Daioh. There's a reason it popularized the slice of life genre and I honestly can't think of a single similar anime that did it better. It's another feel good watch, with great characters and genuinely funny moments. I used to watch it with my husband once a year or so, but we haven't kept up with it recently. I really should fire it up again.

Fullmetal Alchemist (03, haven't watched Brotherhood yet but I know what happens in it), Death Note, Ranma 1/2, Baccano, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Junjou Romantica, Bungo Stray Dogs, My Hero Academia, and One Piece are all anime I've watched, either fully or partially, and enjoyed to varying degrees.

For years I've loved the pink/yellow aesthetic. It's my favorite gradient, it's the background go-to for thumbnails, candy styled videos, channel arts and so forth. And I've never really known how I first got introduced to that particular color combination or why I love it so much.

Today, I found out.

I was hit with a nostalgia bomb and wanted to watch the very first BL anime I've ever seen; Junjou Romantica. Season 2, episode 1, one of the main characters goes to buy flowers for his boyfriend. The flower shop worker suggests a rose called "Baby Romantica" and this is what it looks like;

This is a good example of how something kinda just moves into your brain and lives there rent free without you being consciously aware of it. This is where I first saw pink and yellow put together and it ties back to my first BL anime from when I was a pre-teen.

Miyagi’s Alter Ego

I’ve been wanting to make another Terrorist text post for long while, so here it is. This topic is a bit unusual, though.

Basically, I would like to talk about Miyagi’s mysterious alter-ego, Donichi. Donichi lives in my mind rent free, so it is time to immortalise Donichi on my blog.

Who or what is Donichi? To find out, first we have to go back to act 5 of Junjou Terrorist (equivalent to Season 2 Episode 8 of the anime). This is the chapter where Shinobu has been avoiding Miyagi after finding the photo of his old teacher. Miyagi dons a disguise to corner Shinobu at his house, they have a shouting match, and then he whisks Shinobu away in his car, leading to the climax of their story arc.

Like many, I first experienced this story through watching the anime. Afterwards, I wanted more, so I hunted for the English manga online. The first 12 volumes of Junjou Romantica were officially translated into English around this time, but if you searched, you were probably going to find scanlations online, which is how I experienced a large chunk of the early manga chapters.

So as a reminder, it went like this when Miyagi confronted Shinobu with the photo...

Shinobu is upset about the photo...then, after some more yelling...

After which, Miyagi pulls Shinobu into his car...

Don’t worry! He’ll be with me for a while!

This is where the anime moves to the next scene. But there’s actually a few more lines in the manga.

>>Wait…hold up...let me look again...

‘Donichi?!’

Who is Donichi?!? Miyagi’s mysterious alter ego?!

I was so mystified by this back when I first read this. I knew there was stuff in the manga that didn’t get adapted into anime. So somehow, it seemed plausible that Miyagi might have some kind of...persona? Or that he would ask Shinobu to tell his family that he’s with someone else, rather than himself - he was trying to hide from the dean and Risako after all...

But ‘Donichi’…really? Isn’t it kind of out of character for Miyagi to create a new persona all of a sudden? And why the heck would it be a good idea for Shinobu to tell his family he’s with this Donichi?!? Now they really will think it’s a kidnapping! It even sounds like there could end up being a ransom!!

Of course, it’s a mistranslation, and quite a funny one. Actually, just hypothetically speaking, if you were to search for this chapter of Junjou Terrorist you could probably still find the scanlation, which would mean that people who want to read the manga from chapter 1 in English online these days (do they exist??) may still run into this extremely mysterious line.

Well, back then Japanese was inscrutable to me, even if teenage me had access to the Japanese volumes, they would not be able to read it. But now I can, so let’s look...

(Miyagi) 電話かけろ

“Make a phone call. Tell that foreigner and your family that you’ll be with me for the weekend.”

(Shinobu:) 土日？...どこ行くつもりだ

donichi? ...doko iku tsumori da

“The weekend? ...Just where are we going?”

That’s weird...no Donichi? it feels like a very different line, but this is definitely the same scene.

It’s amusingly simple.

土日は俺と一緒にいる

donichi ha ore to issho ni iru

Lit. As for the weekend, (you will be) with me

土日　donichi, means weekend. Literally: Saturday (土）and Sunday (日).

For some reason, this 土日 donichi was not translated, and instead became transliterated as ‘Donichi’. Why did it end up this way? 

I couldn’t say for sure, but maybe the wording is confusing. Miyagi literally tells Shinobu: Tell your family “you’ll be with me”, complete with quotation marks. 

Maybe the translator read this line as Miyagi telling Shinobu to tell his family word for word, ‘donichi ha ore to issho ni iru’. It’s not like Shinobu can repeat this phrase meaning “you’ll be with me” word for word to his family, it wouldn’t make any sense from Shinobu’s POV. 

To make it sense somehow, they turned donichi into a name. If we read donichi like a name, it sounds like, ‘tell your your family, “donichi is with me”’. Actually, it somehow makes logical sense! Although it is wrong. (lol) Shinobu’s incredulous response somehow supports this version of events as well.

But actually, it’s a simple enough line. Miyagi is just telling Shinobu, call your foreigner friend and your family and tell them you’ll be with me for the weekend. I mean, it’s not like that needs to be a secret. Shinobu already spends a lot of time with Miyagi, and his family (as in, the dean) already trust him enough, so it’s probably not that weird for them to be together for a weekend. He was just in a disguise to come to their house because...because...why was he in a disguise anyway? How is it any less suspicious than just turning up as himself? But I’m digressing...

Shinobu’s response is incredulous not because of a mysterious Donichi, but because he’s like, you’re taking me away for the whole weekend? Where are we going?

As mentioned before, in the anime, Miyagi just says ‘It’ll be a long drive’ and doesn’t say anything to Shinobu about telling his family. (The anime likes to cut exposition like that...) This may have helped to contributed to my younger self’s belief that there was hidden Donichi lore in the original manga, which just never made it to the anime...

And then they drive away...

Somehow I can never forget ‘Donichi’, even though I know it isn’t real. It become its own little canon in my mind back in the days when we all (OK, maybe not all) relied on the wisdom of fan translators and never doubted their veracity. It’s kind of hilarious how easily I was able to believe that Miyagi might have a secret persona. I was confused, I didn’t understand, but...I just accepted it. And I sort of wondered why Shinobu’s family never asked who Donichi was. Actually, Donichi was just in our hearts all along...

I just wanted to share this amusing memory and bit of Junjou fanscanlation history. Just to note, this is not intended to mock. This kind of stuff happens in translation all the time! Translators aren’t infalliable.

But it is also just really funny.

Regardless, I am so thankful that people took the time to make scanlations back then, as well as to the people who still work hard to make them now! I genuinely don’t think I would be as into JR as I am now without them! And even when I reread the manga in Japanese and everything became clear, I still thought...you know, the translators really captured each couple’s essence so well. It doesn’t feel different at all.

It's now 6:41 AM (PT). I slept for a few hours and now I'm awake, staring blankly ahead. My mind is full of s h i t. I can't take Junjou Romantica off my mind. I've been thinking about it for 7 consecutive days already. Today, is the 7th day. It all started when I decided to watch the Anime (3 Season & 1 OVA). Watching till wee hours till my eyes and butt hurts. After watching, I'm so moved that I can't stop thinking about it. My heart aches for it. So, I tried to search for sites to read the manga although I'm not really into manga. I prefer to read a novel/ light novel as I can dive deeply into characters. Now, that I think about it, I can count in one hand all the manga I've read. But all of my hesitation went to the drain when it came to Junjou Romantica. I searched and turned the internet upside down to look for an updated complete Junjou Romantica manga translation but to no avail. I was able to read parts of it, but all sites do not have the complete chapters and volumes. Especially the part where Takahiro found out about Misaki and Usami's relationship. I'm at my wits end. I'm this crazy when I encounter a very good show/novel/manga. I want more of it that it hurts. It's like having an unrequited love. 😭

Today, will talk about 3 mangas and my recent…and surprisingly ANIME hobby…

1st manga. BLEACH 339

SIGHS nothing's really happening. Except Stark and Kyoraku is finally gonna fight. BUT… i have a feeling Ichigo's fight is gonna be center stage for now… >_>

regardless. Despite the fact I know one of them is gonna have to die… unless of course one of them is a traitor, which neither of them are…… I still hope I get to see more of the Stark vs. Kyoraku fight.

They are THE BEST. haha… i really love their lazy attitude so…. i really hope……yes.

    Hi, Daters! Welcome back to another edition of Anime & Dating. I recently had a few major surgeries. I am doing well. During my recovery, I found more than my incisions needed to heal. Allow me to explain. I am a very self-reliant individual, and even though I was born from childhood trauma, I take pride in being able to handle anything that comes my way. So, when my surgeon asked, “Who is going to take care of you,” I legit answered “myself.” Now you’re wondering what this has to do with love languages, I’m getting to that. Sheesh, don’t rush.

Love languages are how we receive love and how we express love. There are lots of different love languages like gift-giving, acts of service, words of affirmation, physical touch, time spent, time is given, and many more. To communicate these things there needs to be a significant level of vulnerability.  As a self-reliant person, I can easily give love, but I’m not the best at receiving it because I don’t like being vulnerable. So, when I found myself physically vulnerable, it gave me time to think about emotional vulnerability. I know how I give love but how do I want to be loved? What are my love languages?

If you have found yourself wondering about love languages, like myself, then let me share with you four of the most common love languages using anime!

Time Spent/Given - Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card  

    Sakura and Syaoran are adorable examples of young love. This sweet couple started as rivals but grew to rely on and eventually love each other. The love language they share in common is time spent/time given. This particular love language is about the time you devote to each other. It doesn’t always mean the time you physically spend together. Sometimes it's about the time you spend on the phone, playing a game online, FaceTime, and even just dropping by to wave hi to them in class. The Cardcaptor couple enjoys cozy picnic dates, fun dates at the zoo and admiring the cherry blossoms in silence. Words Of Affirmation - Snow White with the Red Hair  

    Here is another young couple doing things right. The kids are alright these days. Shirayuki and Zen could easily be an example of many love languages, but they have mastered communication in their relationship. From the beginning, these two comforted each other with kind words as they both dealt with some awful circumstances. This sparked a loving relationship as the couple strived to achieve their dreams. We all know the road to reaching your goals isn’t easy. There were several times when Zen and Shirayuki both wanted to quit. When doubt crept in, they offered each other words of affirmation and support. These words gave them the power to continue. If you enjoy your lover telling you how amazing, beautiful, strong, or smart you are, or maybe you love to shower them with praise, words of affirmation may be your primary love language. 

Physical Touch - Junjou Romantica  

    If you’re reading this and you assume this is one of my love languages … First off how dare you. Second … you are right.  All jokes aside, physical touch plays a major factor in most relationships; not just adult ones. Physical touch does include aspects of a sexual relationship but that’s not all it encompasses. The couples in this rom-com express different levels of physical touch. Sometimes it's holding hands, a gentle pat on the head, a back hug, a kiss on the forehead, or snuggling on the couch. And then there is the more “intimate” touching. 18+ you know the vibes. What’s important about this love language is the level of comfort between partners. This is also a language that develops over time as you grow in your relationship. Remember to take your time and that consent is key. If you find yourself enjoying giving and receiving physical touch, you may be just like the couples in Jinjou Romantica.   Acts Of Service - Smile Down the Runway  

      I selected Smile Down the Runway’s Ikuto and Chiyuki for acts of service because love languages aren’t solely about romantic relationships. Love languages are shared between people who care for each other — friends, relatives, coworkers, and the girl at Starbucks who always adds extra caramel when she sees me. Ikuto and Chiyuki formed a strong bond through their mutual love for fashion and both wanting to break into the industry. The friends provide acts of service to assist each other’s dreams. Ikuto designs clothes for Chiyuki and Chiyuki helps Ikuto find opportunities to work with mentors. She even helps him sell one of his garments when he is in desperate need of money. They do things for each other not because they expect to get something in return but because it makes them feel good. Acts of service don’t always have to be grand, they can also be bringing someone lunch, doing the dishes, watering their plants, helping a friend move, or letting them win in Monopoly. Any gesture done with love and kindness is an act of service. If that sounds important to you, consider making acts of service your main love language. Remember, as you continue your path to love, to decipher what your heart needs and wants, learning your love languages can help you find your perfect someone.
