When someone speaks a foreign language in public and I’m desperately trying not to stare like I’m sorry I’m not racist I just desperately want to hear the different vowel sounds you’re making. sorry.

"posting this because i NEEEEEED this on my blog" is probably going to be the caption for 95% of the Shin-chan stuff i post BUT IT IS NO LESS TRUE BECAUSE OF IT. Masaaki Yuasa is quickly becoming one of my favorite animators and i want to have easy access to ogle at his work at any time. and i hope for you to do the same! so here's his animation for Ending 3 of the show from 1993

Assortment of random Japanese words I‘ve learned since arriving here without studying
足元(あしもと)- at one’s feet, underfoot (heard over a tannoy announcement at the station warning passengers to take care when boarding the train)
参る(まいる)- to come, to go (humble) (they never say “電車がきます” when the train’s arriving; it’s always “電車が参ります”)
まもなく - soon (humble) (again, they never say “もうすぐ” on the train; it’s always まもなく. To the point where I actually forget もうすぐ and end up saying まもなく to my teacher and she laughs at me)
最高の(さいこうの)- the best (from My Hero Academia, because they say “the best hero” literally all the time, and at first I was like “you want to be a psycho hero? What??”)
残念(ざんねん)- unfortunate, too bad (randomly heard on the radio and recalled I’d looked it up recently, and then heard it again a couple of times in anime)
さすが - as expected of (hear it in My Hero Academia aaaaall the time)
揚げ鶏(あげどり)- Japanese-style fried chicken (I asked the cashier how to pronounce it when I ordered it)
本線(ほんせん)- mainline (I hear this literally every time I use the local trains because it’s the name of the line, but I only just figured out what it means)
鼻水(はなみず)- snot (lit. nose water) (hear this all the time when kids want a tissue. They just come up to me and say “先生。鼻水” and I’m like ok gross just go get a tissue you don’t have to ask me)
おっぱい - boobs (heard in class as I got groped by a five-year-old girl, double-checked the meaning on the way home)
甲虫(かぶとむし)- rhinoceros beetle (they’re on one of the videos we put on for the kids when they’re coming into the class and they all just say “kabutomushi” whenever it comes up on screen)
かぶと - a particular style of traditional Japanese helmet worn by ancient warriors (it’s in one of the pictures I had to use this term where I ask the kids “what can you see?” and every single class someone would point to it saying “kabuto”)
Tumblr media
I was actually really confused the first time they said it because Kabuto is the name of a Pokemon (and not one I’d really expect them to know because it’s from the original 150 and hasn’t really featured in more recent generations) but it looks like this:
Tumblr media
So I was like. Wtf there’s no Kabuto here, wtf are you on about?

mm sometimes i think my yanderes would take advantage of the fact that I cant do some of the things most people can do with ease like tying their shoes or telling the difference between left and right, or the way i absorb info just to force me into being a baby. Mommy kakyoin would coax me into his lap after heavily drugging me, so I just happily melt into his embrace as he asks me what sound a puppy makes only to be met with a soft whimper of me trying to speak.. or diavolo making me do kindergarten level math in the playpen he keeps in his office for me. -📱
I've been having some trouble with doing tasks most people can do, so it is fun to think about different yanderes making you do baby-level math worksheets, or French vocab sheets and crosswords meant for little kids. Or having those grid papers to write Cantonese and Mandarin, or in your case with mommy Kakyoin, katakana. Why bother teaching you kanji or hiragana? You'll only be confused. And hiragana is more commonly used-- he doesn't need you knowing what common signs and objects actually say. Then you won't feel as lost, should you manage to slip away from his hands for a moment.
Diavolo knows worksheets aren't any fun-- he'd give everything to not have to do them, and still know the people he cares about would be okay. So instead of a little duotang with worksheets for your math, linguistics, or animal noises, Diavolo tries to set up little activities for you to do every day. Little trays with a number of the day, clay in one dish so you can draw the number yourself, roll it on a die, and count it out of marbles. Calling an animal handler to show you the different birds and bugs of the devildom in the throne room (and saving trips to the royal zoo for weeks you've been extra good!).

Random hcs I have because I may be cringe but I'm free part 27 (Ninjago)
More platonic oppo (but still mostly Kai centric) because their friendship has infected my brain (strap in, it's a long one)
Ok so this one is kind of a mashup of 3 different headcannons, the Chinese Kai hc, the "oppo are best friends" hc, and the one im gonna talk about here that possessed me to write this in the first place, but hear me out-
(Tbh, this could take place at pretty much any point in the series but I usually imagine it somewhere between seasons 4 and 8)
Just take a second to imagine, Kai peacefully going about his life as his proudly bilingual self, until he realizes: outside of Ignacia, its insanely rare to find someone who speaks Mandarin.
This, in turn, sparks two more revelations: One, that just makes the fact that he was born and raised speaking Mandarin all the more cool, and two, that he would have virtually no chance to use/show off his first language with someone other than Nya or Zane, and he would only ever get to use Ninjargon.
This motivates Kai (desperate to keep his spot as one of the most cultured on the team) to learn THREE more languages, those being French, Italian, and Spanish (as any reasonable person would do)
The only person he ever outright tells is Wu (seeing as he's fluent in like every language ever so he's great to practice with) and he mostly keeps it a secret from the others so that he can keep surprising/impressing them by pulling another random language out of nowhere whenever its needed.
What he didn't expect however, was how Zane would react.
Turns out, being a total bookworm and a literal walking computer means that not only does deciphering other languages come easy to Zane, he also absolutely adores studying languages in all their forms. So, when he heard from his friends that the criminal they were supposed to go question didn't know any Ninjargon and that Kai had managed to hold the rather intense interrogation entirely in French, he was beyond delighted. Once he had finished cleaning up after dinner he practically ran to Kai's room to talk, and of course, he immediately insisted Kai do all his explaining in French for the rest of the night.
From that day on, anytime the two of them wanted to have a private conversation and couldn't just pull the other to the side (or, more commonly, if they just randomly felt like it) they would simply start talking in one of the four languages and fall into easy conversation with the other as if they hadn't just simultaneously stopped making sense to anybody else around them.
TL;DR (and the simple seed from which this essay of a hc was born)
Kai talks shit about people to Zane in different languages

I really need bilingual Japanese short story books to not have romaji in them ever. The stories are written in hiragana/kanji with furigana and yet vocab lists have romaji. WHY. You're already assuming the reader can read at least hiragana! If they can't even read hiragana they probably aren't ready for short stories! So why include romaji?!?! Furigana is enough!

aether and lumine who dont remember their first language of their homeworld anymore. who, if they heard it, i guess they would be able to understand in general, but if they tried to say anything theyd struggle - its been so many centuries, so many worlds, and words of other languages, all mixing, have taken its place.
but who could remember something set like a poem or better, a song, maybe. with all the lyrics as a whole naturally coming back with the melody still. tunes they sang as children, or a lullaby they fell asleep to.
maybe sometimes singing it absentmindedly to themselves as theyre doing something.
maybe sometimes singing it to the wind so it carries the melody to the other.

Considering checking out Dungeon Meshi due to a recent post of yours. Maybe the manga too. Are you interested in sharing advice/opinions about the best way to get started?
Oooh yes! I'd say personally the best way is to start with the anime on Netflix (or by whatever Alternative Sites because fuck Netflix, tho I don't know any atm), which (the first season) ends on Thursday. Theyve done some cool stuff with some scenes that make them more impactful, and didn't have to cut too much out! Afterwards, I use (with adblockers ofc) mangadex as a website to read the manga. The names will be really weird at first and the genders of some later characters are obscure (ryoko kui loves unusual names that are a bit hard for translators to understand, and the official English translation took a while to be made and cement proper full names though eventually the scanlations line up) but it's such a good read!
