god im just still thinking about pomme tho. she watched her dad forget who she was On Her Birthday. where has she gone to bed. did she leave bbh, crawl to aypierre's house and huddle into his side? to antoine's, to press against his robes and pretend they could hide her? to etoiles, still sleeping, but still keeping her safe. to baghera's empty tower. no on there to comfort her, no one there to distract her as she stays awake all night trying to figure out what to do. or maybe she didn't go to sleep at all. maybe she's still there with qbad, who we know doesn't sleep much, watching over him and anxiously awaiting his next memory lapse, waiting for the next thing to go wrong. she's just a fucking baby and it was her BIRTHDAY someone get her in a cuddle pile with all her parents Right Now

Hey Sam, it looks like I'll be in Chicago for a few days next May. I'm going through all the typical sight seeing websites, but do you have any recommendations for a first time visitor? I'm not huge on architecture, parks or crowds. History, art and music are a big yes. I'm considering the Big Bus hop on/off tour for practicality. Any tips would be appreciated!
I used to have a "guide to Chicago" that I would link people to, but I think it probably badly needs updating, since a lot of what it talks about is pre-pandemic, and some places don't exist anymore (which is not necessarily down to the pandemic, Chicago is an ever-changing place). RIP Apocalypse McDonalds. Definitely before you follow anyone's advice including mine, look up what you're going to go see to make sure it's still there.
So, couple of quick recommendations; thanks for telling me some of what you're into, that always helps :) I'm going to assume you're either staying somewhere close to downtown or willing to trek into the city from outside it. A lot of people who tell me they're visiting Chicago are actually visiting Rosemont, which is a nice place but not Chicago and not super close to most of what I'll be talking about. Chicago is extremely large, and if you are staying around the O'Hare airport area (Rosemont) it will be an hour by public transit or at least $50 by rideshare/cab to get downtown.
I will say whenever I'm visiting somewhere, my first stop is always Atlas Obscura, which usually lists the really weird shit to do. :D
I've never done the Big Bus tour, but it's much nicer to do it in May than, say, December, and the people I know who've done it found it a convenient and inexpensive way to get around the city without having to deal with public transit, so while I can't personally recommend, I've only heard good things.
I know you said you weren't into architecture, but if you want to see a lot of Chicago in a very relaxed fashion, while incidentally getting some architecture knowledge, it's tough to beat the Chicago Architecture Center's boat tour. You just get on the boat, buy a drink if you want one, sit back, and drift down the river and back while someone narrates the history of Chicago architecture to you. You'll also, in May, see lots of other folks out on the river and get a real taste of Chicago's downtown scene. If you'd like to see the river without the cost of the architecture tour, I'd check out the water taxis and see if there's an opportunity to take one when going between other places you're visiting. They do a lot of tourist-destination stops.
For history, the Chicago History Museum is a natural fit and a lot of walking tours leave from the museum, although most of them are architecture :D I would also HIGHLY recommend Adam Selzer's Mysterious Chicago tours; Selzer is a very smart local historian and if you'd like to do reading ahead of time I also highly recommend his book Ghosts of Chicago. If he's offering a tour of Rose Hill or Graceland cemeteries, I'd jump on that; Graceland was my old "home" cemetery (it was literally my backyard for about a decade) and I think it's extremely interesting and beautiful. If you do go to Graceland, I can recommend Byron's nearby as a great place to get a burger, fries, Italian Beef, or a hot dog. But pretty much any tour he offers I would recommend whether I've been on it or not, he's great.
For art, again, the natural choice is the Art Institute Museum; to avoid lines, I'd recommend buying your museum ticket ahead of time and entering through the Modern Wing on Monroe Street, which is less attractive but also way less crowded than the "Lions" entrance on Michigan Avenue. I always recommend people make sure not to miss the Thorne Miniatures (they're in the basement so easy to miss, but any docent can direct you there) and the Ugliest Vase in the World. They move the vase around quite a bit, but if you check the website for the Londonderry Vase before you go, it'll tell you where to find it. Its hideousness must be seen in person. Also make sure not to miss the Chagall windows, they're off in a corner by the entrance to the cafe.
I'm not really much on music so my reccs are weaker there, but if you'd like some Chicago blues in a tourist-friendly environment, Kingston Mines is good, as is Buddy Guy's (which also has great food and is closer to downtown). If you like fried chicken, Harold's Chicken Shack is near Buddy Guy's (it's all over, it's a small chain, but that's usually the easiest one for people to find). The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is pretty great for classical music, and in the summer they often have special guests. If you like the NPR show "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me", they record live in downtown Chicago at the Fine Arts building; you usually have to buy pretty far in advance, keep an eye on tickets here.
More general recommendations: the Museum of Science and Industry is really fun, especially with kids but even without, but it's also the furthest out from downtown and can take some work to get to. Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium are both fun times, although the Shedd is kinda pricey I think. They're right next to each other though so a day doing both is convenient. If you are doing any of the museums, keep your eyes peeled for the "Mold A Rama" machines, where for $5 you can watch the machine injection-mold you a souvenir. Often the museums have custom machines for various exhibits (the Death exhibit at the Field had a skull one, for instance).
There are two train systems in Chicago: the "El" (the color-coded trains you see in movies all the time) and the Metra. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TAKE THE METRA TRAIN ANYWHERE. The Metra is a commuter rail designed for people who know how to use it, and they don't announce stops or even sometimes have signage; often the train won't stop at a platform unless it's told to during certain times of day. It is extremely easy to get extremely lost on the Metra and end up somewhere you do not want to be. If you are taking public transit, even if it seems less convenient, stick to buses and the El trains. The El and Metra run on different tracks so it's easy to avoid the Metra, but I always like to warn folks.
Okay, I think that's the highlights, minus some parks and such; I hope you have a great time! Feel free to hit me if you have questions.

The ORC Alliance Grows
meanwhile, at Paizo Blog (published January 19, 2023) :
Tumblr media
Over the course of the last week, more than 1,500 tabletop RPG publishers, from household names going back to the dawn of the hobby to single proprietors just starting out with their first digital release, have joined together to pledge their support for the development of a universal system-neutral open license that provides a legal “safe harbor” for sharing rules mechanics and encourages innovation and collaboration in the tabletop gaming space.
The alliance is gathered. Work has begun.
It would take too long to list all the companies behind the ORC license effort, but we thought you might be interested to see a few of the organizations already pledged toward this common goal. We are honored to be allied with them, as well as with the equally important participating publishers too numerous to list here. Each is crucial to the effort’s success. The list below is but a representative sample of participating publishers from a huge variety of market segments with a huge variety of perspectives. But we all agree on one thing.
We are all in this together.

that being said, do you have any battletech designs you like?
it's kind of hard for me to think of many, because my brain is allergic to this kind of mech and I start tasting a chalky pill dissolving in my mouth whenever I see it
Tumblr media
chicken walkers are the best of the awkward T-shaped biped bunch, but they're still on the line. I understand why they're like that, because of miniatures and all, but still
there were a few unseen designs I appreciated (importantly, ones that weren't just licensed from another franchise), but it feels against the spirit of the question to answer with those, so... hm... answers below the break
as someone who does my own share of mechanical design, I do make it a point to check out the designs even in franchises I'm not a fan of, so I can point to a few favourites
I think I'd answer SDR-5V Spider, Great Turtle, Phoenix Hawk IIC, Morrigan, Kodiak, Lich, and Shadow Hawk IIC? the Trebaruna is also really cute
limiting myself to ones that fall a little closer to the body plan I'm not a fan of, I'd answer... Fafnir, Cicada, Raven, Poseidon, Ymir, and Nightstar
the Atlas' head is iconic and I actually like it a good bit, especially with the edgy livery and all that, but it's a careful balance between whether it has a VOTOMS bodyplan (fine enough) or a stiff T-shaped-tank-on-legs bodyplan (can't stand this)
I guess a lot of this does come down to how you interpret the designs at the end of the day!

Bumbleby Week 2023: Belated Day 2 - Sacrifice
Teams RWBY, JNR, CVFY, and SSSN are standing in Headmaster Theodore's office with Qrow, Raven, Winter, and Ozcar.
Theodore: Thank you all for coming at such short notice. We've just received a report that there's a wall of Grimm moving across the desert towards the city. They're expected to be here tomorrow morning.
Qrow: Tomorrow morning?!
Theodore: At the latest...
Ozcar: You've already made a decision on what to do next. I can tell. What is it?
Theodore: (sighs) We need time to evacuate the residents. The only way I can see that working is if we have a security force stationed on the city's outskirts to intercept the wall.
Raven: But.... that's a suicide mission.
Theodore: (silence)
Raven: .......You're looking for volunteers before you order people to die for the city.
Qrow: (slams fists against Theodore's desk) Are you serious?!
Theodore: Look! It's not ideal, but it's the only solution we have!
Everyone: (start arguing and shouting)
Yang: How many people do you need?
Everyone: (silence)
Ruby: Yang?
Weiss: (shocked silence)
Blake: (staring blankly)
Theodore: (stares in surprise) There's a 50% chance for success if we have 100 volunteers.
Qrow: Just call them cattle with how you're sending them out to the slaughter.
Yang: .....I'll do it.
Everyone: (stares at Yang in shock)
Raven: The hell you are.
Yang: You don't get to-
Raven: Not by yourself. Sign me up.
Weiss: Can we maybe take a minute to-
Blake: EXCUSE YOU!!!
Yang: (winces)
Blake: (sets herself firmly in front of Yang so she can't look away) Have you learned absolutely NOTHING from Atlas?! From the vault?!
Yang: Blake...
Blake: We separated during the Mantle-Amity disaster, and I was worried sick about you. You were thrown from the platform, and I thought I lost you forever. (Tearing up angrily) Now you want to throw yourself into a suicide mission?!
Yang: (curls in slightly on herself) Blake...
Blake: Don't! Just... don't.... I need a minute. (Turns and walks out the door)
-Door Slams-
Everyone: (silent)
Weiss: (to Yang) Well?
Yang: Well, what?
Weiss: Stop being a moron and go talk to her!
Yang: She asked for a minute.
Weiss: So you go after her, wait for sixty seconds, then go up to her, throw yourself onto the ground, and beg for forgiveness for being a dumbass!
Yang: (slightly taken aback and looks to Qrow)
Qrow: Don't look at me. My love life hasn't been much outside of a few one night stands.
Yang: (Looks to Raven)
Raven: I'm with the miniature snowman.
Weiss: Hey!
Raven: Go talk things out. No decision will be set until you both come to an agreement you can work with.
Theodore: We don't have time for-
Qrow & Raven: (eyes glint as they draw their swords)
Theodore: (cowers into his seat)
Yang: R-Right! Right! Wish me luck! (Sprints out the door after Blake)

List 5 facts about a favorite sim of yours, and send this to 10 simblrs whose sims you adore 💙
Yay! I'm finally going through my asks, lookit me go! We'll start this week with the winner of the poll... The one and only ✨Dawn Stephens✨
Tumblr media
💖She has a Sociology degree from Foxbury Institute. She did not graduate with a high GPA, in fact she barely passed. She’s very smart, but genuinely hates reading and studying. She is the type of person that likes to be up doing things all the time. She struggles to just sit quietly. If she’s going to sit for an extended period of time, then it’s usually to watch a movie or a favorite TV show (with someone else, never alone). Even then, she’ll likely be distracting you the whole time.
💖During college, Dawn dated a lot, and had a lot of relationships that were short lived and full of drama. To be honest, being so heavily neglected growing up had left her desperate for love and affection. Most of the guys she dated wanted to date around and have fun and enjoy their college years, but Dawn would become instantly attached and clingy which would drive them away. It took her a while to work through this phase in her life, to understand why she felt/acted the way she did, and what she really needed. Before meeting Phoenix, she hadn’t dated anyone in nearly a year and was finally in a good place. That coupled with the fact that Phoenix is a very present and attentive partner means we’ve never seen that needier side of Dawn.
💖The necklace that she wears everyday was a gift from her high school best friend, Claire. Feeling rebellious one weekend, the two of them hopped a bus to visit a mall (strictly forbidden, of course). Claire caught her eyeing the necklace and bought it for her. Unfortunately, Dawn was never able to wear the necklace because A – she wasn’t allowed to wear jewelry and B – she would’ve had to explain where she’d gotten it. When she and Atlas left, Claire stopped talking to her, just like everyone else, and they’ll likely never speak again. But wearing the necklace now is kind of a symbol of her freedom from that life.
💖She loves the process of getting her nails done but can’t stand them afterwards. Every once in a while, you’ll see her with long painted nails, but they never last long because she removes them after a few days. (fun fact: she has beautifully manicured nails when she gives birth to Aspen because I forgot to remove them from her swimwear after their Sulani vacation. I didn’t want to risk messing up the childbirth process by going into CAS to fix it… so let’s just say she had her nails done while in labor, cos why not?)
💖There is an intentional inconsistency in the story that I doubt anyone noticed, it’s such a small detail… In this scene, Dawn mentions having a dog growing up: “He was a miniature schnauzer named Snickerdoodle. [giggles] But I would call him DooDoo.” … But then later, in this scene, it’s stated that Atlas has never had a dog: “He’s not used to dogs. In fact, he’s never had a pet of any kind before, so he isn’t sure what to do.” These two grew up in the same home, so what's the deal? Who was Snickerdoodle? This was actually Claire’s dog, and Dawn was absolutely smitten by him and would pretend to herself that it was her dog. (And she did in fact get in trouble once for saying DooDoo.)

This year has gone by fast! There are only 44 more days left of 2023 so to celebrate I’m gonna make a post about five extinct animals that were described this year!
1. Bos primigenius thrinacius n. ssp.
Tumblr media
(Bos primigenius thrinacius n. ssp. Size estimate of a bull, cow, and calf compared to a human and an adult Palaeoloxodon falconeri. Art by Joschua Knüppe)
This new sub species of Aurochs lived on the Greek island of Kythera during the Late Pleistocene. The sub species was probably present on Kythera while it was still part of the mainland, but became trapped when it was separated sometime during the Middle to Late Pleistocene and their small size was a result of insular dwarfism. Insular dwarfism is a common phenomenon in evolution where a population of large animals becomes trapped on an island and slowly evolve to become smaller over time to better adapt to the reduced space and resources. The opposite, insular gigantism, where an island-bound population of small animals grows larger than their mainland counterparts also occurs regularly. During the Pleistocene, the various islands of Greece were full of giant swans and miniature elephants but now we know they had tiny cattle roaming about as well.
2. Garumbatitan morellensis
Tumblr media
(Size comparison between Garumbatitan morellensis and a human. Art by cisiopurple on Deviantart)
Meaning “Garumba Giant”, Garumbatitan morellensis was a species of sauropod dinosaur that lived during the Cretaceous period in what is now Spain. Its remains were first discovered in 1998 at the Arcillas de Morella Formation near the city of Morella, however, they would not be excavated until an expedition in 2005. More material would later be discovered in a 2008 expedition and a paper would be published on the findings in 2016, but it wasn’t until this year that the species was officially named and described. Its genus named is a mix of the name for the tallest mountain in the region it was discovered in, Mola de la Garumba, and the Greek word “Titan”.
3. Nihohae matakoi
Tumblr media
(A pair of Nihohae matakoi hunting some squid. Art by Daniel Verhelst)
Nihohae matakoi was a species of dolphin that belonged to the now extinct Waipatiid family and lived during the Oligocene in the waters surrounding what is now New Zealand. It possessed a bizarre set of tusk-like teeth that protruded from its beak. It is thought that this dolphin used it’s strange teeth much like a sawfish to stun their prey before consuming them. The holotype specimen was discovered all the way back in 1998 in Awamoko Valley on New Zealand’s South Island. The specimen consisted of a nearly complete skull, a single atlas and axis, eight vertebrae, and seven ribs. However, Nihohae matakoi would not be officially described until 2023. Its genus name combines the Māori words “Niho”, meaning “teeth”, and “Hae”, meaning “slashing”. The species name is also derived from Māori and comes from the words “Mata”, meaning “face” or “point”, and “Koi”, meaning “sharp”.
4. Perucetus colossus
Tumblr media
(A pair of Perucetus swim together in the shallows. Art by Gabuded on Deviantart)
Another cetacean, Perucetus colossus was a species of early whale that lived during the Bartonian age of the Middle Eocene and was found in Peru (obviously). The remains we have or Perucetus are pretty fragmentary, but it has an estimated length of around 55.8-65.9 ft and was probably just as, if not heavier, than the modern Blue Whale. Due to the density of its bones and its absolute chonkiness, Perucetus likely was not a fast swimmer and likely lived in shallow waters and fed on crustaceans and mollusks. However, this is just speculation as very little about its ecology is known.
5. Vectipelta barretti
Tumblr media
(A pair of Vectipelta barretti graze near a stream. Art by Stuart Pond)
Vectipelta barretti was an ankylosaurian dinosaur that lived during the Early Cretaceous in what is now England. It was discovered in the Wessex Formation and it’s genus name means “Isle of Wight shield”. The holotype specimen of Vectipelta was originally discovered in November of 1993, however, at the time it was believed that the specimen belonged to the genus Polacanthus. In May of 2021 it was discovered that the specimen was in fact a new genus and in June of 2023 it was officially named and described. Funnily enough, fossil evidence suggests that Vectipelta might be millions of years older than Polacanthus, the genus it was originally thought to be a member of.
I hope you all enjoyed reading about these recently described prehistoric species! I LOVE dinosaurs and other extinct animals and can’t wait to see what new discoveries 2024 has to offer!

Homelander's penthouse: the obsessive analysis nobody asked for, part 2
Continued from part 1. I would have preferred to have all of this in one post, but tumblr limited me to 30 images, so that was that.
In the last post, we got through the first 20 individually labelled items in Homelander's place and placed some of them into a bigger picture. I have a couple more items I want to cover before offering a map of the place:
21. The table where Homelander has the lovely seafood lunch with Deep (#justicefortimothy) - his ugly couch was moved out or aside temporarily to make it fit
Tumblr media
22. The Sisyphos ATLAS statue 🎉🎉🎉 (thank you @deliciouskeys!), my beloved! The fact that Homelander has this in his place fills me with joy, and I don't even know why, but it 100% fits with how he sees himself I guess, carrying the weight of the world on his shoulder.
Tumblr media
23. The flower bouquets - maybe his birthday flowers? Or maybe just decoration he had people put up for the meal with Deep to make things a little more fucked up, who knows.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
24. The torso on the wall, aka "OMG this thing!!!"
Tumblr media
25. The eagle thingy (thingies, there's more than one)
Tumblr media
26. Ugly brown chair (miniature version of his ugly brown couch)
Tumblr media
27. The world globe, see here for example:
Tumblr media
There's a bunch more stuff (additional statues in the entrance area; paintings, etc.) that I'm not going to label because 1. I'm lazy and 2. @deliciouskeys already made a pretty exhaustive list of the paintings.
Let's look at some of this stuff in context again. Here's the view with the couch:
Tumblr media
And here's the main space of his penthouse with the couch removed for the seafood lunch:
Tumblr media
Before I move on to the last part and make an actual sketch of the layout of his place (please forgive me in advance for my amateurism lol), I want to submit one more piece of evidence that Homelander indeed has an open plane, zero privacy bed "room":
Tumblr media
Okay, now we get to the fun part where I reconstruct the whole layout -- but not to scale because I am incompetent when it comes to these things and will not be able to fix that on this fine Saturday afternoon:
Tumblr media
15 and 19 are a different color because they are temporary (while Stormfront was there). 21 and 23 are also a different color because they were moved in for the lunch with Deep. Everything else is more or less permanent even if it gets moved around occasionally.
And that's it. That's the post.

Hey so I don't wanna obsess over tiny details in RWBY but like. what was the point of having Penny call out to Ruby at the beginning of episode 1? We never SEE Penny, we only see Neo's illusions of her that were used to emotionally and mentally torture Ruby. Why was that a detail they included if there wasn't going to be any payoff for it?
For me personally, this is made worse by the fact that I didn't even know it was Penny. I wasn't able to identify the voice - I think I originally leaned towards Yang, or hearing Summer for the first time - and I didn't realize it was Penny until another poster mentioned her name being there in the script. Which, you know, could 100% just be a me problem, but there's definitely no payoff if you don't even know what character is meant to be haunting our protagonist.
Looking at Volume 9 as a whole, that detail feels like a miniature version of the sword issue: they introduced this reference to Penny (call out/finding sword), had Ruby get emotional about it (gasp/crying), and then tossed it aside without ever looking back (Ruby never brings up hearing Penny/the Prince trashes the sword and Ruby doesn't care enough to take action). There are so many ways that both of these ideas could have actually led to something. What if the Ever After was aligned with the afterlife, rather than Neo getting an over-powered semblance? What if Penny's sword was an option from the Blacksmith that Ruby chose? What if she heard Penny talking to her throughout the whole Volume, a kind of psychological haunting? What if Penny was the only one Neo crafted, making Ruby's grief over her death the undeniable cornerstone of drinking the tea? As it stands, both ideas just... peter out. Actually no, "peter out" is a gradual end whereas here nothing ever comes of these ideas in the first place, or they're bluntly abandoned. Honestly, stuff like this is included with no payoff because RT doesn't know what they want out of their story and, when they do know, they don't understand how to bring that to fruition. Is Ruby grieving over Penny? Their loss in Atlas? Freaking out over how she can't beat Salem? Does she want to be in charge? Does she also hate being "forced" to be in charge? Is she missing her mom? Does she even remember her mom? Is she frustrated with her team? With Jaune? Does she know Jaune killed Penny? Does she have thoughts on her sister starting to date? Are we exploring her relationship with Neo? Or with Ironwood? Ozpin? The 4+ other characters in that scene? Herself?
RWBY throws out idea after idea after idea after idea and none of them amount to anything because this show is the storytelling equivalent of Whac-a-Mole: a cool concept pops out and the writers immediate whack it back down into the void. Penny is not a part of the finale. The girls don't unpack their loss in Atlas. Conversation about Salem is dismissed. We don't acknowledge that Ruby demanded this power for herself. She doesn't want to be leader, but comes out of the tree a perfect leader once more. She's angry with Summer for lying and then that's instantly pushed aside. Magic gives her the most generic 'I love you' memory ever and that cures her deep depression. We don't need to work through Ruby's team failing her because, again, magic tree and mom memories somehow fix everything. We don't know if she ever learned the truth about Jaune. There's no reflection on all the people who have died. "I don't want to be Ruby Rose anymore" is just a dramatic, narrative clickbait that was never going anywhere.
Why did a phantom Penny cry out for Ruby at the start of the Volume? Because the writers knew that would catch the attention of a lot of viewers and, frankly, that's all they need. Most of the fanbase isn't interested in a cohesive story, just a revolving door of fan favorites and sandbox ideas. So for the record, I personally don't think that's just a "tiny detail," with the implication that it's also insignificant. Moments like that are representative of how RWBY's writing has continually failed since Volume 5.

Welcome to the first ever Succession Dog Show
Contestants have been split into seven groups for the first of three rounds. The second round will have the same groups, with just the top three from the first round. Then the winner of each group will move on to the final round‚ which will also include special guest Mondale Roy. Also, Marcia is the judge because <3 and I say so.
In each group there are five succession characters plus three more normal dogs because I didn’t think five was enough and also I think it’s funny that it’s a possibility that none of the characters make it to the final round.
These polls all will last 1 week‚ closing and opening on Sundays.
Here are the Round 1 polls:
Herding Group
Hound Group
Non-Sporting Group
Sporting Group
Terrier Group
Toy Group

Atlas—Chapter 1: Volunteer
Scout is getting used to life in Haven Valley. Now that she’s used to functioning with her prosthetic arm, and Bronzemarch has deemed that she’s as recovered as she’s going to get, she’s free to wander around on her own and do her part to help around town.
Most of the helping she does involves using her miniature Matter Manipulator to help Bronzemarch reinforce the interior of a couple of the hollow hills in the middle of town and dress them up to be a new home or two. In her free time she does the same to the tunnel at the eastward side of town—reinforce the supports so she doesn’t risk piles of sand on her head—and claims it as her own workshop. Mostly so she doesn’t keep making accidental messes of Bronzemarch’s and him getting after her for it again.
Life is pretty routine by now. Which is mostly fine, as far as Scout is concerned, although it does start to get boring. Usually she breaks up the routine by poking around the desert outside of town. So far she’s poked around old sandstone ruins and the uppermost tower of some sort of buried castle.
But today quickly reveals itself to be a bit different already.
It’s fairly early in the morning when Scout meanders towards Riku’s place, expecting to pop by and grab a quick snack of rice or something for the road before she explores again. Normally around this time, when the sun has risen but it hasn’t gotten too blisteringly hot yet, Bronzemarch is working on one of the new empty houses. Or working with Semyon in his workshop or hut. But today he’s standing just outside Riku’s place, engaged in deep conversation with Riku.
“Exasperated. But we’ve got the new move-ins arriving later today,” Bronzemarch is saying as Scout wanders over, slowing her pace to not interrupt.
Riku is resting his elbows against the short wall around his patio, his small tablet in one hand and his three eyes flattened in an expression almost as exasperated as Bronzemarch’s tinny voice. Either that or he’s just tired. He’s not the most early-morning-person around town. “I know that, but this trade deal is time-sensitive,” he emphasizes, “And I got another virtual meeting scheduled with Letheia in half an hour.”
Bronzemarch’s LED eyes flatten as he crosses his arms and deadpans, “Dull. And the settlement is insisting this trade is time-sensitive why?”
Riku shakes his head, rubbing his free hand down his cheek and pulling his rubbery skin a bit with the motion. He sighs, “I don’t know. It’s not like they have a ship of their own. Yet still they—” His red eyes glance towards Scout, and instantly he straightens up and dons a welcoming smile as if nothing is wrong and suddenly he has all the waking energy in the world “Oh, hello Scout,” he greets lightly like every morning.
Scout returns the greeting with a small salute and a light, “Mornin’,” before she looks between the two men and fizzles, “Somethin’ up?”
Riku scoffs good-naturedly as if he and Bronzemarch haven’t just been sharing exasperation as he replies, “Oh, not much. We were just discussing a trade deal I’m in the middle of arranging,” waving a dismissive hand in front of his chin.
“Curt. He’s hoping someone will fill in for their lack of transportation,” Bronzemarch summarizes, arms still crossed over his tunic.
Riku shoots Bronzemarch a peculiar, brief squint of his third eye, pointing out, “You are the only one with a ship around here, my friend. And I don’t suspect you would be willing to permit the others to pilot her. Devon cannot pilot; Essa certainly cannot. Have you taught young Semyon how to—”
“I can pilot yer ship,” Scout volunteers, brightening with the possibility of being in the Icarus again. After their trip to the Outpost, Bronzemarch left the ship in orbit around the planet and had S.A.I.L. beam them down to town, which was a ride and a half.
Bronzemarch and Riku both shoot Scout a wide-eyed blink at her interruption. Semyon—who is starting to walk into earshot from Bronzemarch’s shack—also shoots Scout a blink, but more out of curiosity than surprise.
A smile starts to pull at the corner of Riku’s lip. “You did say she maneuvered the Icarus out of a tight spot the other day,” he muses, sending a prying glance back at Bronzemarch, “Did she not?”
“Yep I did!” Scout confirms before Bronzemarch can say anything, her plasma brightening proudly as she perches her hands on her hips. “It weren’t that hard, either.”
Her proud pop draws a further smirk from Riku’s expression. Bronzemarch’s eyes meanwhile just flatten as he retorts, “Stern. That was an emergency, Scout.”
Scout tilts her head. “So? Riku said something ‘bout this trade-thingy bein’ time-sensitive? Sounds a mite like an emergency t’me.”
“Reluctant. It’s not quite an emergency,” Bronzemarch sighs, shaking his head, “But I don’t like the idea of you flying the Icarus on your own.”
“I wouldn’t be on my own,” Scout counters, “S.A.I.L. ain’t ever gonna leave the ship.”
“Uncertain. S.A.I.L. doesn’t—”
“I could go with her,” Semyon interrupts, volunteering with a raised hand as he joins the loose circle they’ve formed in front of Riku’s patio.
Bronzemarch spins to face Semyon with a surprised simulated blink; but while Riku’s expression turns ponderous, his third eye narrowing slightly while he tilts his head, Bronzemarch’s eye rectangles turn serious. “Protective. Semyon, no. You’re not going on that ship right now.”
Semyon frowns, “Why not? I’m not doing anything important today. If you don’t want Scout flying the ship on her own, I could—”
“Stern. For one thing, you don’t know how to operate S.A.I.L..”
“Neither does she,” Semyon argues.
Scout flares briefly with a crackle, “Yeah I do! Done it before.”
Her crackle makes them all look at her with varying degrees of surprise. Riku’s third eye opens fully again; Semyon’s eyebrows shoot straight up while Bronzemarch’s screen-like eyes simulate another blink and fill the vertical space available for a moment.
“Wait, you have? When?” Semyon prompts, brows furrowing slightly with curiosity but still partially buried in his curls.
Scout almost responds as immediately as she flared. But when she tries, her words fizzle away to static and churning in her plasma as she realizes she can’t draw a time to mind. She’s positive she’s operated a ship with a S.A.I.L. before. It was too familiar to her when she commandeered the captain’s chair and went manual. But why the familiarity and when? Eventually all she can do is answer with a shrug.
Bronzemarch studies her for a second, but then his eyes soften and he lifts a hand slightly as he says, “Diffusing. Noted.” But then he turns back to Semyon and continues, “Practical. In any case, I will be needing you here in town, Semyon.”
Semyon’s frown of curiosity crumples down to a scowl. Almost a pout. “What, for the move-ins? Can’t Essa help with—no she wouldn’t, would she.”
Bronzemarch shakes his head in confirmation as Semyon answers his own disgruntled question. “Disappointed. Not likely, no. Informed. The first move-ins will be coming in an hour.”
Semyon grunts to acknowledge Bronzemarch’s information, but his expression is still more crumpled and squished than a ball of paper with disappointment.
Tentatively Scout cuts in again, “So… Am I gonna…?”
Bronzemarch glances at her, then at Riku for a long moment. Riku just shrugs in her direction with a tilt of a prompting smirk. After a long moment, Bronzemarch’s shoulders fall a bit as he releases a long, simulated sigh. “Resigned. Alright. Looks like I don’t have other options,” he concedes, “Acquiescent. You can pilot the Icarus for today, Scout. Help close the trade deal for Riku.”
Excitement bubbles in Scout’s plasma and she whoops with a bright whistle. “Yes!”
“Firm. Don’t take too long out there. Riku will give you the coordinates of the settlement; don’t take any longer there than necessary,” Bronzemarch instructs.
Scout nods with each instruction, corona bobbing and floating with the motion. “Right.”
Bronzemarch fishes through his trouser pocket for a second, then holds his hand out, palm up and something enclosed in his fist, saying, “Practical. Clip this to your collar. The people at the settlement should speak Galactic Common, but that’s not a guarantee.”
Scout tilts her head for a moment as she holds her hand out to accept the small device Bronzemarch puts in her palm. It’s a tiny microphone of sorts, circular and black, with a curved tail and another speaker at the end. Attached to it is a small clip that doesn’t quite match the rest of the device in style. Probably a modification. After studying the tiny device, Scout shrugs and idly clips it to the collar of her shirt.
As soon as she does a faint beep echoes through her plasma from the device. Language setting: Galactic Common, an automated voice states. Scout stiffens with a startled spark.
Semyon laughs but gestures for her to calm down as he assures her, “It’s ok; the translator activating automatically is normal.”
“Did ya hear it talk or somethin’?”
“Yours? No,” Semyon shakes his head, still smiling in amusement at her startle, “But mine did the same thing the first time I tried one on.” Indicatively he taps the tiny black earpiece Scout has seen in his left ear but never questioned.
Scout wills herself to calm down with a fizzle, plasma flickering a bit. “Darn thing spooked me stiff,” she bubbles.
“Assuring. It’s alright. Practical. You’ll also probably need this,” Bronzemarch adds, fishing through his trouser pocket again and this time pulling out a small card. A photo of Bronzemarch’s most dour expression peeks from under his thumb. “Informative. We’ll get you your own ID eventually, but for this trip use mine. Instructive. If someone asks for an ID, tell them you’re going in my place.”
Scout accepts the small card from Bronzemarch’s hand, twirling it between her fingers curiously to look at both sides. Next to the photo of Bronzemarch staring dead at whoever took it are a few rows of more text she can’t read—the tiny print blurs rebelliously when she tries—and on the pack is yet more tiny print and a row of numbers. And a seal in the corner shaped like a blocky horseshoe with wings. The same symbol emblazoned on the side of the Icarus. Huh.
“Firm. Don’t lose it,” Bronzemarch insists, emphasizing the order with a wag of a finger as Scout slips the card into her pocket.
Scout waves a hand dismissively as she slips the card into her pocket next to her Manipulator. “I won’t, I won’t.” Once it’s firmly hidden in her pocket, she looks between Bronzemarch and Riku. “Now can I go?”
Bronzemarch gives another sigh, but nods. “Conceding. You should.” Then he lifts his voice and his head slightly as he addresses S.A.I.L. and orders, “Commanding. S.A.I.L., beam Scout up.”
Scout barely has time to salute to the three of them before the world blurs into light and her being is yanked skywards.

I was thinking about Billy and Max and how an abusive parent can affect sibling relationships and then I just so happened to scroll past a post about Zuko and Azula because tumblr knows my love for AtLA will never die.
What follows are some rambling thoughts fueled by an amount of wine.
Aside from the sudden need for an AU wherein Billy and Max are fire-benders, the parallels really struck me: how both Billy and Zuko were belittled, verbally/physically abused by their fathers in ways that made them feel like outcasts in their own families, that pushed them to hone their bodies into something that would lend them power, that led to their lashing out against others (Neil sending Billy out to find Max is a miniature version of Ozai banishing Zuko to find the Avatar). And then I thought of how their mothers abandoned them in abusive households. The only difference is Zuko had Iroh (and writers with souls. and brains), whereas Billy had no one (and shitty ass writers).
It’s been explored by others more effectively how Max showed signs of mimicking the abusive tactics she observed at home and used them against Billy in the fight scene in season 2, and that reminded me of how Azula perpetuated Ozai’s abuse of Zuko (obviously to a way more extreme degree). But then it made me rethink some assumptions I’d been making about Max… like Azula, she’s blunt and outwardly confident (or at least… abrasive?? which can read similarly!) when we meet her in season 2, using sarcasm/insults as her main mode of interacting with peers. And she’s a tomboy, seeming to reject “girly” hobbies and style of dress in favor of “boyish” ones… and if you compare those traits to Azula, and consider why Azula embraced and honed particular traits, it opens up the potential for a different read on Max.
A lot of people assume Max would have gotten flack at home for not being girly enough. But what if the traits we see in Max are ones that Neil had a hand in fostering, both by being a snide jerk role model himself, but also because Neil is a misogynist. (Like Ozai, he throws his weight around with his wives, demanding obedience and submission via sadistic assholery) Because there’s a reason why “girl power” trends of the 80s/90s involved girls/women acting more like boys/men, up to and including padding the shoulders of their powersuits to look like a linebacker... and it’s because femininity was perceived as weak and inferior. In that sense, it would track that Neil would approve of Max being a tomboy and being assertive and being snide… because Neil disdains anything feminine. Max being a tomboy is therefore good, but Billy exhibiting any weak or “girly” behaviors is cause for mockery and insults. Max is rocking that internalized misogyny that tells her she’s not like other girls, and Neil would have undersigned that shit.
JUST LIKE AZULA. Ozai groomed her to be just like him.
Max tells Lucas in season 2 that she doesn’t want to be like Billy. And that line hits a bit different when you consider the possible effect that Neil may have had on her perceptions of Billy and herself. That in order to occupy a position of power, you must act like Neil, or how Neil approves of… and whatever you do, don’t be like Billy.
But of course this only applies to season 2, because as usual, there’s approximately -5 continuity between seasons re: character development. (see: steve. robin. eleven. the other people)
