*the used word means “make-up” but since we use make-up to cover something, I used the word veneer (which means something that hides something unpleasant or unwanted) -> in this case the suddenness of loss hides/covers the real, negative feelings that come along with it. Same with the next line, a wish to alternate reality, rewrite it is hidden by suddenness of forementioned loss

**white breath can mean literally a spirit but also flowers - baby’s breath flowers - used often as a filler in funeral arrangements where they symbolize purity and are linked to the clouds in heaven

How were the AN fables chosen for The Scorpion and the Frog?

It depends. For the first chapter, I already had that fable in mind for the start... the Oxen and the Donkey is a story that I already knew and liked. However, I had the last minute realization (based on a response from my friends who read that chapter before I ever put it up publically) that most people are not familiar. With obscure fables. So, I had the idea of rewriting them at the end-- but interestingly, in my google docs, those a/n: fables dont exist. that's because I just straight up tended to write them as I was publishing the chapter. that also lets me reinterpret those fables to better suit the chapter: I think it's actually fun to go look up the fables and then compare them to the version that I wrote down. so, for the second chapter, I was on aesop's fables wiki page, read through all the stories that had 'frog' as one of the animals, and went with the one I thought worked the best.

farmer and the viper, itachi's first pov chapter, I had that one picked out early, its another favorite fable of mine. goat and the vine: i went through a lot of different fables looking for something that suited this chapter, but in the end I really liked goat and the vine because of its nature: this is a sacrificial goat speaking to a grapevine that will also be poured on the altar. the dead speaking to the dead. i thought it was a great intro for the akatsuki, and for the fact that kaeru had now entered the "doomed" part of her life. I dont have a lot to say abt wolf and the crane, I think that's self explanatory...

Crow and the snake: i liked it bc id already given itachi a snake story earlier and crows are also his thing. like the farmer and the viper, itachi becomes the crow and the farmer, killed by the snake. in many ways its a deeply ironic fable for him, because while hes the one in the fable, the one who needs to learn the fable is his symbolized killer-- sasuke, the snake. lol

dog and the sheep. akatsuki chapters get akatsuki titles

hawk and the nightengale: you dont want to know what its like constantly googling stuff like "what birds eat frogs" "what predators preffer to eat frogs" "frog predators". anyway, its sasuke's first chance to be a bird! its ambiguous, naturally, which one he is. rivers and the sea: took me a long time to settle on this one. I think its a little cruel to say that all of itachi's fables are "what can you expect?" deals because itachi's inherent character demands he seek hope from a cruel universe. what did he expect indeed. deer without a heart: i liked the image of a zombie deer i will be real. but i also liked the idea of returning to the lion's cabin, a very literal representation of kaeru's actions compared with their metaphorical weight

scorpion and the frog: i was so happy to get to the name drop chapter. yes i outlined this in advance so i did always know what fight would be getting this name. black-bird and the birdcatcher: ... "friend, if this is what you offer your guests, no gods will answer" "but birds will." and the birds did come, did they not?

“Yowai Akuma”, the Weak Demon. A name which only meant something to sorcerers worth their weight; the name of a curse with the aura of death; a curse that killed without lifting a finger against their opponent; a curse that left no witnesses, not human, sorcerer or cursed spirit. They were a curse that could’ve been on par with even the Curse King. But they were also a curse that vanished centuries ago, one that was never found again.

The clock across from me read one-twenty-three in the morning. I sat in the dim corner of my room, leaning against the wooden closet door and fiddling with the delicate relic in my hands. The necklace glinted in the soft light of the old street lamp outside my window, I needed to close my curtain properly. I rubbed circles on the rim of the kintsugi necklace, feeling the smoothness it gained after years of the habit. 

It’d been several years since I began my search for the Curse King’s fingers. Twenty cursed objects which together would cause catastrophe for humans, curses and sorcerers alike: scattered across the islands of Japan like seeds cast upon farmland. Throughout those years of searching, I managed to chisel just one stroke on my tally, gaining a single finger through sheer luck. 

Now, after more fruitless labour, I enrolled in an academy in Sendai: Sugisawa Third High School. This school was the target of Tokyo Jujutsu College’s newest lead on the Curse King himself, Ryomen Sukuna’s finger was supposedly on the compound. 

The necklace slipped between my fingers; I hadn’t noticed I had been squeezing it till it did. I scoffed. 

“Tomorrow’s another chance. Y/N.”

My phone buzzed on my kitchen counter on the other side of the room. I got to my feet, brushed off my shorts and stuffed the necklace into my pocket. As I rose to my full stature, I scanned over my apartment: a one-room unit with a sleeping area and a kitchen. It wasn’t the most malleable of homes, considering the bed needed to be shoved over to the left, or else there’d be no access to my closet, not that there was much in there anyway. The kitchen was decent, with a gas stovetop oven, a double-basin sink, a small fridge and plenty of counter space.

I opened my phone to the expected message. Kaeru was the only contact I spoke to; the only number on my phone, actually. He was the only person beyond my goal I bothered to talk to at all. I hadn’t seen him since I left to be closer to the school I’d be attending. His text read of my first day of school tomorrow, asking if I was nervous or excited.

Thrilled was the only answer that came to mind. 

‘You: not sure.. but there’s no point in being scared, you know?’

‘蛙 (frog): either way, its cool isnt it? you get to meet a whole bunch of new people!’.

‘蛙 (frog): anyway its pretty late, i have an english quiz tomorrow. i have to sleep or else miss andrews will have my head. night (y/n)!’

‘You: g’night, kaeru!’ 

I shut off the screen before the next bubble of ellipses could become words. Plugging the phone back in, I dragged my way to my bed.

Your work reminds me of Euclase, who used to be in the fandom long ago before she went pro. Except it looks like you do paintovers and smudging, which is like Petite-Madame, another great artist who used to be in the fandom. You fit in the middle, but either way it's lovely to see beautiful art being made for our favorite characters.

I have been in fandom when they were around still and I definitely took some inspiration from their art! I admire Euclase's painterly soft but still very precise realism and the work of color/glow in her later spn paintings and I have definitely looked at a few of her tutorials to figure out my own style (this one for example). I also always loved Petite-Madame's Destiel art, especially the highlighting, and well, I will never forget her beautiful Twist and Shout fanart.

About the latter part of the ask, I actually don't do smudging at all :D I tried it once here, but the smudge tool really overwhelms me. I instead blend with the pipette tool and a soft brush (or, if I keep it more painterly, with a textured brush). It just personally works better for me! And about the paintovers, I actually had to google what that means, but I think as I understand it I don't do that either (I think?) xD I did paintovers back in 2014/2015 when I first eased my way into digital art but did then stop painting completely since it felt like I was cheating and it catapulted me into a 5-year long art block until I felt brave enough to pick up a pen again (sorry if that's too personal and I am being awkward) 😅 I do sometimes stay very close to a reference or a screenshot of the show but I don't paint over it, I just try to recreate it and make it more pretty (in my personal perspective, that's of course very subjective) :D I also try to "loosen" up more with the 'realism' aspect of things lately, and just keep it more textured and painterly, or do some doodles and sketches, and go more nuts with the colors, because I always have the feeling that my perfectionism limits me in what I allow myself to paint (I say while I work on a painting that references a screenshot of the show, but I am trying, I swear, if you look at my latest art! Sometimes a more 'realistic' attempt at painting sneaks into it but I definitely want to be more flexible and upload more stylized stuff as well 😂)

I think when we are talking about styles, I also have to mention other awesome artists in this fandom that I take a big chunk of inspiration from and that influence my own style and processes as an artist :D For example, Winchester-Reload, who obviously is just 💚💙 with her paintings and shading (those cheekbones!!! the beards!!!) and especially the facial expressions and emotions transferred by her art, Diminuel with the highlights and blush and absolutely adorable cuteness, and Clickbaitcowboy with his peak gender art and the way he draws bodies and does stylized illustrations that look very realistic at the same time (how??? sir your art is so pretty). Also Scenteddean, Artmetica, C-Kaeru, Feredir, Werepires, Free-To-Be-Impaled, Naughtystiel, and so so so many more artists who created beautiful art for this fandom and who are just so talented <3

Translation notes:

The title (and chorus) of this song "ai rabu iu" is a play on words- "ai" is the Japanese word for love, "rabu" is the English word "love", and then "iu" sounds like "you" in English, but it's also the Japanese verb "to say".

So "ai rabu iu" sounds like the English phrase "I love you", but the "iu" portion is written with the kanji for "to say". Thus it's like "I'll say I love (you)" (subjects are naturally omitted from Japanese so this makes sense for Japanese listeners even though the object "you" technically isnt there).

It also literally is like "love love I'll say". lol. god
