Tony plays gay and eats fried chicken

Believe it or not, Keefe isn't Tony Cavalero's first gay character. In 2012, he played a gay guy in a Comedy or Die commercial parody, "KFC loves the gays."

Colonel Sanders (John Goodman) explains that, unlike those homophobic chicken places (Chick-Fli-A, I'm looking at you), KFC loves gays. Heck, he might even be gay -- he likes Bette Midler. And as an added benefit, they're open on Sunday.

Actually, he admits, KFC doesn't care one way or the other -- if you've got the money, you're in.

Meanwhile, three gay guys (Tony Cavalero, Tony Rodriguez, Mike Rose) skip into their dining room with a bucket of chicken, set it out on their fancy gay china, and enjoy the most incredibly amazing meal of their lives, followed by a nude dancer on the table.

It's not at all funny, but I didn't find it particularly homophobic. The three guys swish a bit more than I would prefer, but to be fair, they had only about ten seconds to present their characters, and they had to do it while going into ecstasies over fried chicken.

It's a bit late, but I figure I have to touch on the big news from today, which is that for an (early) April Fools celebration Sega went and released a free visual novel about Sonic getting murdered

Here's a thing you should know about me: I am deathly allergic to ironic visual novels, and the related trend of announcing dating sims (which are synonymous with the medium of visual novels as a whole to many people) on April Fools

Aside from an incredibly small selection of titles that have seen wider success, it feels like much of the game industry is only willing to acknowledge visual novels as a punchline. And said jokes about dating sim stereotypes have been done a million fucking times by now. They're parodies of parodies of parodies. Even when these prank dating sims actually go and get made rather than just being a few fake screenshots, it feels like it's just because VNs are seen as cheap, disposable entertainment compared to "real" games. Companies can afford to commission some bullshit like the KFC dating sim and write it off as a marketing stunt. And it works. These games will get widely reported on for being so ~wacky~, while devs pouring their hearts into doing sincere, interesting work with the medium of visual novels are usually out of fucking luck. It's so, so tiring. The fact that this happens like clockwork every year has made me come to dread April Fools Day

So imagine my surprise when The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog drops out of nowhere and it's actually one of my favorite Sonic games in years

Aside from the intentionally tongue-in-cheek, attention-grabbing title (and Sonic doing the Family Guy Death Pose), there isn't an ounce of irony here. It's just a straight up whodunnit VN set on a train, albeit a lighthearted and pretty easy one. It's still a Sonic game, after all, and Sonic games are for kids. But it's so clearly made out of a place of love, both for the characters and for murder mysteries, rather than being a parody that's constantly winking at the camera and going "haha, isn't this absurd that this even exists at all?" Forget that. This wants to tell a genuinely good little Sonic story. Not to mention how gorgeous all of the artwork is throughout, with character illustrations from IDW cover artist Min Ho Kim (AKA deegeemin)

Like, for real. I've wanted the Sonic games to explore the supporting cast more for years, and I can't believe the game to finally do it is a murder mystery visual novel released for April Fools. This might be one of the best showcases of the cast... ever, in the games? The script from Ian Mutchler is so, so great, with fun and cute moments for everyone involved. And, smartly, you see the cast through the eyes of a new character (I named them "Blorbo") who isn't necessarily familiar with things like Blaze being a princess from another dimension, making this a surprisingly valid way to introduce people to the supporting cast. I'd say more, but it's a short game, so I think everyone should just go out and play it if you haven't already

There is still part of me that wishes a Sonic visual novel like this could've been greenlit for release any other day of the year, rather than being yet another April Fools visual novel. But regardless of the excuse they used to make it, I'm extremely happy that this exists

I think this line summarises the game best: Your name is Goncharov. You are fifteen years old, and today is your first day of mafia school. G-TMHDS is a very short datim-sim game, dabbling with the Goncharov "lore". Dipped in humour and sarcasm, the game gives the player a short introduction of the main players of the "movie" and their relationship to one another... if this was a Highschool AU.

Spoilers ahead (not so many, but this is a template). It is recommended to play the game first. The review is based on my understanding/reading of the story.

Due to its short length, the game feels more of an introduction to a larger dating-sim, rather than a fully rounded story. You wake up, get ready for school, meet up with a friend (Joe), and try to talk to your crush (Katya) and be jealous of her friend (Sofia), before the game ends with a hint of a dark attraction (Andrej). There are a few choices throughout the story, each giving some humourous variation (try ditching school).

From the start, it is clear the game is not to be taken seriously. It will treat your not-so-smart question with disdain, and your doubt with deprecation - an attitude many would have towards teenagers or very naive individuals. The narrator is not afraid to call you out for stupid decisions (or as-stupid thoughts about doing something). "Teresa Maria, Goncharov, don’t be such a square." had me wheezing.

Honestly, I still haven't decided whether this was meant as a parody of the meme or of the highschool dating-sim genre. It makes fun of both mafia tropes and of those dating-sim (as much as it can with the limited passages), juggling between the two without missing a beat. While reading through it, it reminded me of that KFC dating sim game from a few years back - I Love You, Colonel Sanders! - it is of the same tone: frivolous, humourous, and plain stupid (the hahaha this is so dumb kind). It just hits all the right notes.

I think this game might work even better in a VN form...

***Spoilers for episode 5 of the main story!***

Sooo they changed Deuce’s UM name from “Bet the Limit” to “Double Down” (“Double Down” being the chance to increase the value of one’s initial bet by 100% in a game of Blackjack). I’m guessing this was done because the original name explicitly mentioned “betting”/gambling in a game which is marketed and exposed to an audience that can contain children, whereas “Double Down” can be interpreted as a reference to Deuce’s stubbornness and unwillingness to budge if a player isn’t familiar with card game terms.

I find it kind of confusing because TWST’s whole gacha system to acquire new characters IS inherently a form of gambling 😅 but that aside, I don’t dislike the new name??? It works a lot better than some of the other name changes they’ve made, and I appreciate the word play/double meaning.

… But fun fact, there is a KFC sandwich with the same name as Deuce’s localized UM 😂 GO GOOGLE IT IF YOU THINK I’M KIDDING CUZ I’M NOT—

BRO. THEY JUST STRAIGHT UP REMOVED ALL OF HEIGH HO/YAHOO????? Rhythmic/Twistune (aka 30 free gems)? AXED. Musical cues? GONE. Lyrics? WHERE? Song name? NEVER HEARD OF HER. AHBDOSAIDAIDASHDB It’s???? Such a shame 😔 I really feel like seeing RSA’s song is important to the chapter because it shows NRC (and Vil specifically) what they’re up against, and it helps to characterize on and expand RSA’s students.

The removal of Heigh Ho/Yahoo also really impacts a lot of scenes, and for the worse. It leads to parts where Neige says, “Everyone, let’s go!” to awkward silence before (even more awkwardly) fading into black. It’s particularly weird at the very end of the episode, where the NRC group is forced to smile and sing along with Neige??? Instead it just shows Neige grabbing Vil and being all like, “let’s sing together!” before fading into white 😅 I genuinely feel really bad for EN exclusive players right now 💦 Heigh Ho/Yahoo actually plays a big part in the gravity and some of the light heartedness of the latter half of episode 5...

I think that they likely won’t just add it in later since the censoring seems extremely deliberate. If I had to guess (BIG FAT DISCLAIMER that I’m not an expert, nor do I claim to be, of Disney internal operations and legal operations), Heigh Ho/Yahoo probably got removed due to licensing issues between Disney USA and Disney JP since those branches operate differently? (An example that a friend of mine gave is that Japanese VAs can get away with song covers but Disney USA usually frowns upon parodies or covers of their songs over in the USA. It’s also possible that the licensing issue is between Disney USA and Aniplex, not Disney JP.) The song itself doesn’t contain anything offensive that would need to de redacted, it’s literally called a popular nursery rhyme for children in the Shaftlands/Pyroxene.
